In a tribute, the Governor of Ekiti State,  Dr. Kayode Fayemi, has expressed his condolences on the death of former Administrator of the State.

Gen. Olurin, served as Sole Administrator of Ekiti State for six months between October 19, 2006 and April 27, 2007 during the state of emergency imposed by the Olusegun Obasanjo Administration in the wake of political crisis that engulfed the state at the time.

Dr. Fayemi said although the late Gen. Olurin was a soldier, he was a man of the people who was very much concerned about their welfare and ever ready to solve problems brought to his attention.

The Governor noted that Gen. Olurin brought his humane nature and professionalism to bear during his tenure as the Military Governor of the old Oyo State and while on peace- keeping assignment as the Field Commander of ECOWAS Monitoring Group (ECOMOG) in Liberia.

According to him, the history of how a lasting peace was achieved in the then war- torn Liberia would not be complete without a worthy mention and glowing chapters written on the sterling contributions of the late General Olurin.

He expressed sadness that Gen. Olurin’s demise came just few weeks after the death of a distinguished daughter of Ekiti, Mrs. Abike Sonoiki, who served during the emergency rule as  Secretary to the State Government (SSG).

The Governor prayed God to grant the family and associates of the deceased the fortitude to bear the loss, urging them to be consoled by the legacies of service, selflessness and excellence he left behind.

“On behalf of the Government and good people of Ekiti State, I commiserate with the immediate family and associates of our amiable General Olurin. Our prayer is that God will grant the deceased eternal rest and grant the family the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.” the Governor said.

Porous Nigeria Borders, Lack Of Information, Impediments To Tackling Insecurity – Fmr Reps Member Akinlaja

0
Chief Joseph Akinlaja

By Ayodele Oni

Veteran labour leader and former member, House of Representatives, Chief Joseph Akinlaja has listed some impediments against tackling insecurity in Nigeria.

Chief Akinlaja, a two time Reps member for Ondo East and Ondo West identified compromise by officers manning the different points of entry into Nigeria that allow illegal entry of weapons into the country; the officers and operations to thwart the efforts of bandits and terrorists that are compromised.

According to him, the citizens who know and can identify the bandits and terrorists yet do not disclose the information to appropriate authority also compromise the fight against insecurity.

He was speaking, while delivering a lecture titled “Insecurity: Roles of the Society and the Media,” in Akure at the public lecture and award nite, organized by Corespondents Chapel of the Ondo state Council of Nigeria Union of Journalists, (NUJ).

“Interestingly, these same individuals turn around to expect there should be peace and calm everywhere. Where are those weapons from, what are they meant for.

“These acts are perpetuated by those whose moral upbringing is suspicious. Those who have lowered their level of moral uprightness and for these reasons see nothing absolutely wrong in these acts.”

The veteran labour leader listed Causes of insecurity to include “unemployment; corruption; imbalance in development; weak judicial system; illiteracy; inadequacy of basic amenities, whether social or infrastructural; narcotic/psychotropic substances; open borders; influx of arms especially, small arms and light weapons; inadequate distribution of wealth; ethno-religious animosity and shrinking socio-cultural value system, etc.

“Socio-cultural value system

Almost on a daily, weekly and monthly basis, security agencies kill or arrest large numbers of criminals and bandits. Focusing on terrorism alone, since the very serious crackdowns on Boko Haram terrorists, several thousands of the fighters have been killed and some of their enclaves have been destroyed.

“But, is it not curious that since the spate of killings of the terrorists and destruction of their enclaves, they keep striking?  Certainly, there is a stream or reservoir that is bolstering their ranks. This is evident in the number of suicide missions conducted particularly by teenagers.

“It is said that as citizens whether individual or corporate, if everyone accounts for every family member and upholds the tenets of moral, religious, cultural, societal and traditional values, there would be no terrorists, bandits, robbers, arms smugglers, child traffickers, cattle rustlers, militants, corruption etc.

“Subsequently, the work of the government, military and security agencies would be easier. There is a social orientation campaign which says, ‘‘if you see something, say something’’

“I found this to be profound, instructive and lucid, and suffices for everyone to key into this. Once our societies are populated with good moral and religious behaviours, the fight against insecurity would be easier to win. Once absolute peace is restored, the atmosphere would be created for our youths to unleash their creative potentials and the economy would grow at exponential rate.

Chief Akinlaja observed that the roles of the media in tackling insecurity, are limited by “lots of challenges, ranging from poor welfare package for media practitioners, lack of continuous and constant training and retraining exercises for media workers, the tendency of journalists to be self-censored for fear of victimization by their employers to reluctance of citizens to give information for fear of being attacked.

“As the fourth estate of the realm, the media determine dominant values, perceptions and attitudes of the society by its impact on it. The importance of the media in addressing national security in a democratic setting cannot be overemphasized as it is the bridge between the people and its societal activities.

“For any activity to get noticed, it must be reported by the media. The media must therefore make national security part of its principal agenda so as to make positive impacts.

“Section 22 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended entrusted the media with the power to monitor governance and uphold the Fundamental Objectives and Directive Principles of State Policy as enshrined in Chapter 2 of the Constitution.

“The media need to set agenda for themselves in tackling insecurity. It must also provide platforms to the religious leaders to preach and admonish against criminal acts of any kind especially terrorism, kidnapping, banditry, armed robbery, ritual killing etc. This will not only make security issues attract attention but also raise citizens’ consciousness to security and crimes matters.”

PDP Asks President Buhari To Admit Failure Of His Administration

0

By Ayodele Oni

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has told President Muhammadu Buhari that he is already a failure in governance and will leave a failure, adding that his attempt at political damage control cannot help his fizzling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The PDP, in a statement, described the statement by President Buhari that he will not leave office as a failure as “medicine after death” noting that as long as he is a product of the corrupt, inept, directionless and anti-people APC, he will leave as a failed leader.

The statement, signed by PDP spokesman, Mr Kola Ologbodiyan, states “The party asserts that President Buhari’s veiled admission of failure, which smacks as a tactic to exonerate the APC, is an exercise in futility as the APC, which now only exists on paper, will soon fizzle from our political firmament.

“President Buhari and his APC have failed in their three-pronged promises of security, anti-corruption and economic development.

“They have instead wrecked all sectors of our nation life with no hope in sight.

“What explanation can the Buhari Presidency and the APC offer for failing to decisively tackle terrorists, insurgents and bandits, who are daily ravaging our communities, killing and maiming our compatriots in various states across the country, despite the huge resources at their disposal?

“How do President Buhari and APC leaders sleep at night when they know that due to their incompetence and compromises, hundreds of Nigerians, including school children are languishing in kidnappers’ den at the mercies of their assailants and the elements?

“President Buhari has so failed as a Commander-in-Chief that non-state actors have taken over, with regions now resorting to their own security outfits while state governors, including his home, Katsina state governor, Aminu Bello Masari, telling helpless victims of terror attacks to defend themselves.

“On the economy front, President Buhari has only succeeded in ruining the once robust economy handed over to him by the PDP administration in 2015 and turned Nigeria into the poverty capital of the world, where over 82.9 million once thriving Nigerians can no longer afford their daily meals and other necessities of life.

“Moreover, the Buhari Presidency cannot point to any landmark project it conceptualized, started and completed in the last six years.

“All it can boast of is the mortgaging of the future of our nation with accumulated N33.107 trillion debt with nothing to show and no clear repayment plan.

“More atrocious is that Mr. President is seeking to borrow additional N5.62 trillion, when he knows that he has less than two years in office.

“Rather than fighting corruption, the APC-led Buhari administration has become the citadel of corruption where over N15 trillion naira have reportedly been stolen by APC leaders from various agencies under the cover of government.”

Ife and Modakeke

By Ayodele Oni

Tension has enveloped the two communities of Ile Ife and Modakeke in Osun State following the killing of five persons by unknown assailants.

Already, security has been beefed up at the Obafemi Awolowo University, (OAU), as major gates leading to the institution were under lock.

It was gathered that the bodies of the deceased persons were discovered at a Jabata village near Ile Ife. The victims are said to be indigenes of Modakeke

It was reported that youths from Modakeke on Friday came out with weapons, apparently to avenge the death.

Elders from the two communities and the Police authorities in the area were said to have hurriedly conveyed a meeting to douse the rising tension.

The aggrieved youths brought the corpses to the palace of the traditional ruler of Modakeke, Oba Moses  Oyediran, and dumped them there.

A top official of Ife Vigilante group, Mr Sunday Agunbiade, explained that “The shooting cannot be traced to any Ife person. They were killed in a village, so the Modakeke youths brought their corpses to the Palace of the King.

“Ife knows nothing about this. We feel sorry for the loss of these Yoruba people. They are our people. We suspect third parties trying to provoke Ife and Modakeke into conflict.

We won’t allow this to happen.”

According to him, traditional rulers of both communities are in touch and would not allow the incidence to escalate.

“This looks like the handiwork of those who want to provoke crisis in Ife. I can assure you that Ife and Modakeke elders and youths wont allow this to happen.

“There is calm now. There is not going to be another Ife Modakeke crisis. We are children of Oduduwa.

“We must avert any war at this time. The state Governor, Gboyega Oyetola has been briefed. Normalcy has returned to the communities.

The last crisis between Ife and Modakeke happened between 1997 and 2000 over the creation of local government by the then military government. Several people lost their life in the incident before it was resolved.

Panic As EFCC Swoops On Bank MDs

By Bayo Bernard, Business Editor

Abdulrashees Bawa, the chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC has set September 1 for the commencement of investigations into the activities of commercial banks in the country. By the time the investigation kicks off next month, the managing directors and chief executive officers of the banks will be top priority, a source in the commission told the magazine.

The EFCC boss stated this on Thursday during a meeting with bank chief executives in Lagos. He solicited the support of the CEOs in combating corruption in the banking and financial sector, warning that any CEO caught to have soiled his/her hands will be prosecuted.

The revelations that the commission will swoop on bank MDs next month, has however, rattled the sector as fear looms that top bank executives who have been involved in one fraudulent practices or the other will be exposed during the process. Some of them, sources in the sector said are already trying to cover up their tracks.

“We are already preparing our books in case the EFCC ask for them. Our bank has nothing to fear because we have maintained the best practices so far. The EFCC is welcome,” an executive director of one of the commercial banks said on Friday.

Abdulrasheed Bawa
Bawa: Goes After Bank’s Chief Executives

But speaking on the issue, Fred Akinyemi, a forensic analyst in Lagos said huge scam will be uncovered “by the time the Commission commences investigations. I have a reservation with the manner the EFCC announced that it will investigate the banks. This should have been done without informing them first, because this has given the some fraudulent banks the opportunity to cover up.”

He, however, stated that not all the banks in the country “have something to hide as some commercial banks have operated with the best practices and therefore have nothing to be afraid of.”

Bawa had appealed to the bank managing directors, including Kennedy Uzoka of the United Bank for Africa, UBA and Ebenezer Onyeagwu of Zenith Bank Plc and others to cooperate with the commission in its fight against graft and asset recovery quest. Bawa said the commission will focus more on prevention in line with United Nations’ policy against corruption.

He said “We want to lay less emphasis on enforcement, which is investigation and prosecution and put our energy more on prevention and asset recovery. In addition, some of the issues we have identified include foreign exchange malpractices and fraudulent election financing.

“As you all know, in 16 to 18 months, Nigeria will be preparing for another round of elections, and the government will not want what happened in the past to repeat itself.

He said the EFCC under his watch will not tolerate any lapse on the part of the managing directors, warning that “You need to ensure full compliance with regard to knowing your customers and ensuring that you do not give opportunities for foreign exchange malpractices”.

According to him “come September 1, anything that we see that is happening or has happened within your industry, we are going to deal with it by the books. The Commission will ensure that any banker complicit in any such financial fraud will face the full wrath of the law. It is better to have fewer banks complying with the laws of the land than to have multiple banks not complying with the laws, he said”.

Boko Haram Returnees: MURIC Clashes With Shehu of Borno, Ndume

0

By James Orji

The Muslim Rights Concern, MURIC seems to have stirred the hornets nest by calling for amnesty for repentant Boko Haram insurgents. The group had urged those affected by the 12 years insurgency to support efforts by the federal and state governments to rehabilitate the returning terrorists back into the society.

MURIC was reacting to Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno state call for support for the re-integration of the terrorists into normal life after laying down their arms.

Hundreds of fighters, including their wives and children from the Abubakar Shekau-led faction of the deadly sect have surrendered to troops in Konduga, Gwoza and Bama in Borno.

The federal government said those who surrendered will go through the Safe Corridor programme which was launched in 2016 for the de-radicalisation, rehabilitation and re-integration (DRR) of ex-insurgents in the country.

But many prominent Nigerians including the Shehu of Borno Abubakar El-Kanemi, Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South in the National Assembly and others have called for accountability on the part of the insurgents.

Prof. Ishaq Akintola - MURIC
Akintola: Warns Against Stigmatisation of repentant Terrorists

El-Kanemi, who said it will be difficult to forgive the repentant insurgents for the crimes they committed, added that re-integrating them among the same people whose families have either been killed or maimed is a herculean task.

He said “The Safe Corridor programme of the Army led to the de-radicalisation of repentant terrorists in Gombe state. But it will be very difficult if not impossible for us to reintegrate the repentant insurgents into our destroyed communities.

“It is easy to forgive for the destruction of many lives and property, but difficult to forget the wanton loss of lives in the various communities of my Chiefdom,” El-Kanemi said.

But MURIC, through its leader Professor Ishaq Akintola has pleaded for forgiveness for the insurgents, urging the government to take the chance for a peaceful settlement with the insurgents.

Akintola said in a statement that, the North East war zone has witnessed a dramatic change with Boko Haram insurgents and ISWAP fighters laying down their arms in large number.

The statement said, “The state governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, yesterday (Wednesday) appealed to both the Federal Government and the Nigerian Army to assist the state in resettling the surrendering fighters.

“A governor who spends most of the day with troops at the war front and most of the night walking around the city, visiting hospitals and teaching in classrooms to ensure that all sectors are working needs to be supported.

“Peace-making is cheaper than fighting wars while meaningful development and growth can only occur in a peaceful environment. Federal government should therefore go all out in ensuring that its de-radicalising process is accompanied by stomach infrastructure and economic resettlement.”

He said other terrorists still in the forest will lay down their arms once the repentant ones have been fully resettled.

According to him “Boko Haram insurgents and ISWAP fighters, who are surrendering, should be resettled and trained in vocations that can enable them to cater for themselves and their families in future. Quick and meaningful resettlement will encourage the remaining insurgents and fighters to embrace peace.

Akintola warned against stigmatization against repentant terrorists, adding that the integration of the remorseful insurgents and fighters will bring an end to the restive North East.
