The United States, US  Government has urged the Nigerian government to do more to protest Christians in the country. It however said progress has been recorded in the ongoing collaboration between the US and Nigerian governments to stem the spate of terrorism and banditry in the country.

The remark was made by the U.S. Under Secretary for Political Affairs, Allison Hooker, during a high-level U.S.–Nigeria Working Group meeting in Abuja on Thursday.

Allison said the federal government must step up the protection of Christians, and ensure that they are allowed to practice their faith in the country without being intimidated.

The US diplomat spoke a few days after over 170 Christians worshipers were abducted in Kaduna, a development that has raised apprehension in the North Central state.

The magazine had earlier reported that the worshipers were forcefully seized last Saturday during services, from two Cherubim and Seraphim worship centres and an ECWA church by suspected bandits who also led them into the bush.

The government and the Police initially denied that the abduction took place but later admitted that the worshipper were indeed seized and taken away by the bandits.

Not a few Nigerians and groups such as the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF,  opposition leaders from the African Democratic Congress, ADC, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP have called for the rescue of the over 170 worshipers.

Reacting to the abduction on Wednesday, a former Vice President Atiku Abubakar noted that the bandits and terrorists have become bolder in carrying out their evil operations under the APC-led government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

In her reaction yesterday at the even in Abuja, the nations’ capital, the US government envoy called on the Tinubu’s administration to do all in its powers to deter terrorists from carrying out attacks on Christians, saying its’ deeply concerned following the abduction of the over 170 worshipers in Kaduna state.

“We are concerned about recent reports that gunmen kidnapped more than 170 Christians in Kaduna State,” Hooker said.

Meanwhile, Christians in Kaduna state, under the aegis of the Southern Kaduna Christian Leaders Association, SKCLA, has called on the people of the state to embark on prayer and fasting from Friday for the safe return of the abductees. The Association, which describe the incident as alarming and heart-rending urged the government and security agencies to ensure the unconditional release of the victims within a short period.

According to a statement signed by the chairman of the association Apostle Dr Emmanuel Nuhu Kure , the two-day fasting must be condcuted by chriatians in all the churches in the state, and prayers rendered during Sunday services for the victims’ safe return to their families.

Kure: “This call to fasting and prayer is a united cry to God for mercy, protection, and the safe return of our brothers and sisters from captivity,” Apostle Dr Kure said.

“It is also a demonstration of rare unity, as believers across denominations stand together at a critical moment in our history.”

Lagos Assembly Rejects Sanwo-Olu’s Nomination Of Adebisi Adelabu As LASPA GM

Adebisi Adelabu

By Akinwale Kasali

Adebisi Adelabu’s  nomination as the General Manager of the Lagos State Parking Authority, LASPA, by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has been rejected by the leadership of the Lagos State House of Assembly (LAHA).

The Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa-led LAHA, in rejecting her, cited alleged serious procedural breaches linked to her earlier tenure.

During Thursday’s plenary session presided over by the Speaker, members questioned Adelabu for having occupied the office of General Manager of LASPA since 2021 without ever submitting herself to the constitutionally required screening process.

The Lawmakers described her prolonged, unapproved stay in office as a clear violation of legislative authority.

The Lawmakers stated that this infraction led the House to nullify her appointment on November 18, 2025.

Despite being nominated again, persistent irregularities and failure to convince the House during the screening exercise led to a unanimous decision to, again, step down her confirmation for deeper review.

Other nominees forwarded by the Governor faced no such controversies and were screened and confirmed.

They include Kehinde Durosinmi‑Etti as Chairman of the Lagos State Security Trust Fund; Engr. Olopade Adekunle, Barr. Temitope George, Alexander Akinwunmi,  Falola Olakunle and  Bello Wasiu Oladimeji into various leadership and membership roles within the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission.

Untold Story Of  The Villa Visit By Governor Makinde To  President Tinubu

By Ayodele Fayose

Here is the true story of what happened in the Villa when Governor Seyi Makinde visited the President today (Thursday)

First, Governor Seyi Makinde demonstrated that he now lacked enough courage to face the President alone, he had to enlist the support of the Plateau State Governor.

The President told him that if it was about official matters regarding Oyo State, he will listen to him.

But if it had to with politics and any claim that it was Wike that angered him to go on TV to accuse him (President) of plotting to turn the country to a one party state, it is better to as usual, go on TV to say all he (Makinde) had to say.

He was told pointedly that he can’t come to the closet on political matters to eat his words, while saying another thing to the public.

Furthermore, the President told Governor Makinde that he was not expecting any support from him regarding 2027, and that he should also expect that he (President) will support his party.

Lastly, the President made it clear to Makinde that Wike is someone whose support and consistency he (President) can’t deny or wished away. Therefore, if Makinde has issues with Wike, that is between the two of them, I should be left out of it.

That’s why Makinde told the press that he’s comfortable in PDP. It’s because of the reality that there’s nothing for him in APC.

And after this meeting, shouldn’t Makinde tell the people of Oyo State if he has returned the N30bn he admitted to have received from the Federal Government as intervention fund for the January 2023 Ibadan explosion?

Fayose, an Nyesom Wike friend and staunch loyalist, was Governor of Ekiti State (2003 – 2006, 2014 – 2018)

Rivers APC Thanks Presidency For Affirming Fubara’s Leadership, Asks Gov To Convoke Stakeholders Meeting

The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has hailed   the position of the Presidency on the battle between the Federal Capital Territory, FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike and Governor Siminalayi Fubara over the Leadership of the Party.

On Thursday, January 22, 2026, the Presidency affirmed Governor Fubara as the leader of the party in Rivers.

While Affirming Fubara, Presidential  Special Adviser on Policy and Communication, Daniel Bwala, affirmed support for Fubara, and stressed that the Governor must be allowed to “carry out his duties without undue interference.”

Bwala, in the interview Thursday with Channels Television, acknowledged Wike’s role in President Tinubu’s victory at the polls. He described Tinubu as one of those instrumental to the Tinubu administration, but

clarified that Wike is not a member of the APC, and that Fubara should be given  a breathing space to govern the State.

In a statement by its Publicity Secretary,  Darlington Nwauju, the Rivers APC Chapter said:

“We are grateful to the President and Commander-in-Chief, His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, leader of the APC Party in Nigeria for sticking to our Party constitution/convention by reaffirming the position of the Governor through his SA on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala Esq.

“This Presidential clarification has once again vindicated our uncompromising stand on this matter and aligns with the policy thrust of our national party leadership under Prof Nentawe Yilwatda and Senator (Dr) Ajibola Basiru.

“We, therefore, commend the sincerity of Mr President and Commander-in-Chief to stick to party management direction which allows APC Governors to lead the party at the state level to engineer mobilization, cohesion and efficiency.

“This timely reaffirmation justifies the position of Rivers State APC on the position of the state Governor, His Excellency Sir Siminalayi Fubara as leader of our party in Rivers State and should correct any false or misleading narrative being peddled by political jobbers.

“Flowing from the above, we once more condemn in totality, the opinion offered by Mr Felix Morka on the impeachment process against the Governor of Rivers State and his Deputy as his opinion and suggestion contradict the core essence of party membership.

“We hope that Mr Morka elects to display his democratic credentials by stepping down from his role as National Publicity Secretary of our great party for failing to protect organizational objectives as an image maker.

“We further remind the National Working Committee of our great party of subsisting court decisions over Rivers APC leadership (please see Suit No. PHC/3592/CS/2023 & Suit No. PHC/3859/CS/2024) and request that congresses to elect new sets of leadership for the party at the Ward, LGA and State levels be scheduled immediately in order to harmonize all contending interests.

“Finally, we request that the Governor and leader of our party to immediately convoke a stakeholders’ meeting to give our party a direction going forward.”

“Nobody should stop Governor Fubara from Governing the State” – Presidency

Nigeria’s Presidency has affirmed that Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, is the Leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the State. In affirming Fubara as the Leader of the Party, the Presidency, also, said that the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike cannot speak for the APC because he is not a member of the Party. At best, the Presidency said, Wike is the Leader of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Rivers State, having been a former Governor of the State.

These clarifications were made the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Policy and Communications, Daniel Bwala, a Lawyer, during an interview on Channels Television’s programme, ‘Hard Copy’.

According to Bwala, the APC’s structure in the State is clear. And he emphasized that Fubara must be allowed to carry out his duties without any interference.

Bwala said that President Tinubu very much believes in the rule of law and democratic best practices, and so, the APC respects internal party procedures.

His words: “I agree with the point highlighted by the National Chairman that in Rivers State, Governor Fubara is the leader of the APC. Wike is not a member of the APC, so he cannot speak for the party.

“He may be regarded as a leader within the PDP in Rivers State, having been a former governor, but the APC leader in the state is Governor Fubara.

“What the National Chairman said is what the party stands by because he respects party procedures. The President believes in the rule of law and due process, and the party will always respect that.”

On the ongoing political  impeachment proceedings against the Governor, Bwala spoke like the Lawyer he is. He said that must be handled within the framework of the law, but re-emphasised: “When you ask who is the leader of the party, the answer is the governor.

“There are court orders stopping the impeachment, and the party is clear: nobody should stop Governor Fubara from Governing Rivers State.”

Wike had, when Fubara defected from the PDP to the APC, and flaunted his registration number, 001, mocked the Governor and told him: “You are not the leader of the APC in Rivers State. Who made you the leader?

OPINION: We Owe Putin an Unreserved Apology

As US President Donald J. Trump marks his first year in office by expanding his wish list from making Canada the 51st State of America to seizing and renaming the Panama Canal, and now taking Greenland by any means, if he cannot get the Nobel Peace Prize, spare a thought for Russian President Vladimir Putin. The world has been unfair to him.

In one year, Trump has indulged in some of his tastiest treats from the world’s biggest candy stores, the most gratifying of which must becapturing Venezuelan President Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. President Trump even briefly announced himself as “acting president” after seizing control of the country, which has the world’s largest oil deposits.

In 365 days…

Trump’s first year in office must be making Putin wonder what he has done to be classified among the world’s most despised, with descriptions of him ranging from a tyrant and outlaw to a potential war criminal.

In light of the wreckage that the world has now become, does Putin deserve to be viewed through a milder, gentler lens? Are his transgressions unforgivable?

Putin’s sins

When the Russian President annexed Crimea 12 years ago, the world was outraged. The United Nations declared the annexation illegal, and the US and Europe imposed limited sanctions on Russia. But Putin had only just started with Ukraine.

He consolidated his grip on Crimea, arguing that the resort, which hosts Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, is strategically important to Russia and that its loss would weaken Russia’s naval position. And in case the world had forgotten, he reminded us that Crimea was a part of Russia until 1954, when it was transferred to Ukraine, which was then part of the Soviet Union.

Cost of war

In Russia, Putin framed the annexation as a response to the historical injustice by the US and Western Europe to emasculate, weaken and encircle Russia. Putin defied Western economic sanctions, and eight years after annexing Crimea, he made an even more audacious move by launching an all-out war on Ukraine.

In the last four years of the war, the estimated total casualty figures have ranged from 980,000 to 1.4 million, with civilian deaths as high as over 14,000, minus the wounded and millions more displaced. The Russia-Ukraine war is the bloodiest in Europe since World War II.Yet, there’s no end in sight, mainly because Putin insists that he won’t stop except Ukraine gives up territory currently occupied by Russian forces, a concession that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is unwilling to make.

Greenland by all means?

Putin’s demands, as unreasonable and unjustified as they may be, have paled into insignificance since the scandalous demand by President Trump that the US must have Greenland, by any means possible.

If Trump believes that he can grab Greenland and plant the US flag in Nuuk, whether the people like it or not, because he was denied the Nobel Peace Prize as he told the Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre in a text message, why is Russia, which has an even more substantial stake in Ukraine, being condemned, ostracised and punished, while Trump gets ego massage?

Putin has argued that the war with Ukraine is a matter of Russia’s survival, insisting that after the former Soviet Union broke up into 15 states, there was an agreement between President Mikhail Gorbachev and the West in 1990 that NATO would not expand eastward. That agreement has been widely cited incredible diplomatic circles.

NATO has denied the existence of such an agreement, but has barely hidden its subversive encouragement in bringing three countries under the former Soviet Union into its fold, virtually encircling Russia. For Putin, the invasion of Ukraine is his last stand, his push, after Crimea, for Russia’s modern-day Danzig (the crucial trigger for World War II).

Leprosy for ringworm

Yet, Putin’s excuses have not impressed a world that has treated Trump’s leprosy as ringworm. The US president has threatened Cuba, lashed out at the Mexican president, called Europe’s leaders wimps, and, after capturing a sitting president and his wife, described himself as the “acting president” of that country.

NATO can’t tell him that he cannot have Greenland. Instead, at the World Economic Forum in Davos, they steered him away from his delusional request by promising him a bigger piece of real estate in the larger Arctic, something like a pie in the moon, where he can build the next Trump Tower!

Apology for Putin

Perhaps, it’s not only Putin that the world owes an apology. Compared to Trump’s claim over Greenland despite the rejection of the citizens and the exasperation of Denmark, China’s frosty relationship with Taiwan is like a love story. Taiwan was a part of China until after the civil war in 1949, when the Communists won control of mainland China and Mao Zedong proclaimed the People’s Republic in Beijing, forcing the Nationalist government to retreat to Taiwan.

In the Trump world, Xi Jinping would be justified in moving from the rhetoric of one-China to complete military occupation of Taipei, as Kim Jong Un would be welcome to roll out the tanks to occupy Seoul. In a way, a homegrown variety of this insanity in Africa would be for Morocco to seize the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), or for Nigeria to insist on taking the Bakassi Peninsula from Cameroon by force, rather than submitting to adjudication.

Return to Hobbes

It’s convenient to argue, from the realist point of view, that any country that can, will do as it pleases – after all, the strong never failed to have the weak for lunch.

That was the Hobbesian state until two world wars, several other man-made tragedies, and a recent pandemic, which we are yet to recover fully from, taught the world that cooperation, collaboration, and multilateralism were the best way to go. As one of Europe’s most syndicated journalists, Jonathan Power, once wrote, “The 21st century thus far is the least violent and safest century of all – despite the wars in Ukraine, Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia, Sudan, etc.”

If the price for world peace is to award President Trump a Nobel Peace Prize for ending eight wars, a delusion he firmly believes, then we should indulge his fantasy by granting this fervent wish. But since it would be grossly unfair to exclude Putin, or to ignore Xi, Kim or even Benjamin Netanyahu from such a list, it would not be a bad idea to propose to the Norwegian Nobel Committee a once-in-a-lifetime, first and last Nobel Peace Prize Quintet 2026, for all five.

Then, at least, we can be sure that the remaining three years of the Trump presidency will be bereft of tantrums, insults, and relentless threats to weaponise tariffs. Thank you for paying attention to this matter!

Tinubu Appoints Fmr. DG DSS Ambassador-designate To USA

0
Lateef Kayode Are

By Adesina Soyooye

A former Director General of the Department of State Services, DSS, Lateef Kayode Are, has been appointed Nigeria’s Ambassador-designate to the United States of America, USA.

Are, 70 years old,  a retired Army Colonel, was DG DSS, under the Government of President Olusegun Obasanjo – 1999-2007. He was very active,  behind the scene, during the aspiration of then aspirant, and later, candidate Tinubu to the office of the President.

Beyond being very qualified – educationally, admininistratively and experience – for an Ambassadorial position, his posting to the USA, the most important Mission in the world, is seen, by not a few, as not only strategic, but an appreciation of the role he played in the emergence of Tinubu as President.

Three others were also appointed Ambassadors-designate alongside Are.

Ayodele Oke, a former DG of the National Intelligence Agency is the Ambassador-designate to France, Aminu Dalhatu, Nigeria’s former Ambassdor to South Korea is the High Commissioner-designate to the United Kingdom, while a former Governor of Kebbi State, Usman Isa Dakingari Suleiman is the Ambassador-designate to Turkey, a country, President Tinubu is billed to visit in about a week’s time.

President Tinubu, in a memo to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, directed it to formally notify the Governments of the four host countries in adherence to diplomatic protocols.

Presidential Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said the four appointments are the first tranch of Ambassadorial deployments to Nigeria’s diplomatic missions abroad.

The Senate had, earlier screened and cleared 68 Ambassadors-nominees whose names were forwarded to Senate President Godswill Akpabio by President Tinubu.

Ogun state has joined the oil producing states in the country as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved the commencement of commercial oil drilling at Tongeji Island in Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State.

With this development, Ogun is expected to become the tenth states to benefit from the 13 percent oil derivation fund.

A statement by Kayode Akinmade,  the Special Adviser Media to Governor Dapo Abiodun stated that this was disclosed on Thursday, by the governor.

There are currently officially nine oil producing states in Nigeria. These states are Abia, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bayelsa, Delta, Edo, Imo, Ondo, and Rivers.

Akwa Ibom, Delta, Rivers, and Bayelsa are the largest contributors, accounting for over 80 percent of daily crude output. Other significant producers include Ondo, Lagos, Edo, Imo, Abia, and Anambra.

The governor also announced presidential approval for the immediate take-off of the Olokola Deep Seaport project in Ogun Waterside Local Government Area.

Abiodun said the new seaport, to be known as the Blue Marine Economic Zone, will significantly decongest Lagos ports and boost regional trade, while oil drilling at Tongeji Island will promote inclusion and economic empowerment in the coastal communities.

The statement added that construction of the Olokola Port is expected to be far advanced between now and next year, following President Tinubu’s directive.

“I Am Comfortable In PDP,” – Oyo Gov. Makinde After Visit To Tinubu

“Makinde lacked the courage to see President Tinubu alone” – Fayose

After an audience with President Bola Tinubu at the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja on Thursday, Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has ruled out dumping the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) despite the recent wave of defections in his party.

When asked if he’s also considering joining the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), like his former colleagues in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Makinde said he’s comfortable with the PDP.

“I am comfortable in the PDP,” he stated.

Makinde maintained that addressing Nigerian problems requires a bi-partisan approach with contributions from all political parties in the interest of the country.

“We may have issues in this country where you need a bipartisan approach, where there won’t be an issue of APC talking alone or PDP talking alone; where we will have to look at what is the best foot forward in the interest of our nation. So, when you get to that junction, you need everybody on board,” he said.

The Oyo governor arrived at the Aso Villa shortly after Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, who recently defected from the PDP to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) came around to see the President.

Both Governors were received separately and proceeded to the President’s  office.

Makinde was a key member of the group of five PDP governors, popularly known as the G5, who opposed the emergence of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as the party’s presidential candidate ahead of the 2023 general election.

During the 2023 presidential election, Makinde and other members of the G5 openly worked against the PDP candidate and supported Tinubu, who eventually won.

In another account on Governor Makinde’s visit by former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose which he tagged “Untold story of what happened in the Villa during Governor Makinde’s visit to the President today,” said :

“Here is the true story of what happened in the Villa when Governor Seyi Makinde visited the President today (Thursday)

“First, Governor Seyi Makinde demonstrated that he now lacked enough courage to face the President alone. He had to enlist the support of the Plateau State Governor.

“The President told him that if it was about official matters regarding Oyo State, he will listen to him.

“That’s why Makinde told the press that he’s comfortable in PDP. It’s because of the reality that there’s nothing for him in APC.

“And after this meeting, shouldn’t Makinde tell the people of Oyo State if he has returned the N30bn he admitted to have received from the Federal Government as intervention fund for the January 2023 Ibadan explosion?”

Fayose had accused Makinde of diverting the N30 billion released to the state by the federal government as intervention fund for the January 2023 explosion in Ibadan towards his presidential ambition.

Makinde denied the allegation saying the fund released was not up to the amount mentioned by Fayose and that the fund is still being kept by the state government.
