Alhaji Mustapha Mohammed, Secretary to the Katsina State Government is in a sorry state of mind.

For over four days now, his elder brother, Alhaji Kabir Muhammed, has been in kidnappers’ den. He was kidnapped on September 1,  2021.

The gunmen were said to have abducted him while he was  working on his farm in Daftau Village, Danmusa Local Government Area of Kano state.

According to neighbours, they noticed the sudden disappearance of the kidnapped victim who is between 78 and 80 years of age and of fragile health, after he failed to participate in the early morning Muslim prayers.

It was discovered that he had been abducted after being traced to his farm by family members and loved ones.

Spokesman for the SSG, Mallam Kabir Yardua, who confirmed the incident, said the gunmen were yet to contact the family as of Friday night September 3.

Frantic efforts are being made by Security agencies to get a hint of his whereabouts.

There are serious fears over his state of health, especially, since there has been no communication.

CAN To FG: Don’t Gag Opposition Views, Listen

CAN President

By Ayodele Oni

Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has admonished the Federal Government to allow opposition views on its programmes and actions.

CAN, in a statement on the State of the Nation, signed by its President, Dr Samson Ayokunle, observed that “our country faces myriads of challenges that pose existential threats to its unity, peace and progress, especially the unfortunate issue of national security and the leadership has been trying to find a lasting solution.

“On the heightened situation in the country with its attendant fear and tension, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) hereby admonishes those in political leadership of the nation to exercise caution in the way they treat observations of people and comments, so as not to further plunge the nation into unnecessary crisis.

“We urge Nigerians to be modest and factual in their comments and respect those who are leading us by giving honour to whom honour is due; however, that does not erode their rights and freedom of expression by speaking the truth always to those they elected into power without fear.

“We must avoid inciting people against leaders, ethnic and religious groups. We are only calling for restraints and balanced judgement.

“In the same vein, we urge the government not to gag the people or see those who speak about the failures of government as enemies to be intimidated, hounded down like preys and arrested.

“This will only worsen the situation by widening the divide and fan embers of passion.

“It is being reported by the media recently that one Retired Navy Commodore Kunle Olawunmi has been invited by the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) over comments he allegedly made on Channels Television’s ‘Sunrise Daily Breakfast programme last Wednesday.’

“We thank God that it was a friendly chat as claimed by the Defence Headquarters.

We urge the government to tolerate criticisms that are constructive as they would help in finding solutions to our problems, especially those that expose the ills in our society and the people behind our ordeals.

“This would help us get to the roots of our problems and solve them. We must promote peace, love and unity in all we say and do.

“On the other hand, CAN urges the government of Edo State to rescind its plan to bar people who could not show the evidence of vaccination from entering the church, mosques and public events centres beginning from this month of September.

“While we fully support vaccination, we equally recognize that vaccination depends on individual choice.

“In view of the foregoing, coercing people into getting vaccinated is a violation of the fundamental right of each individual.

“Let the government and all of us be emphasizing the observance of COVID-19 protocols all the time. The vaccines available now in the country through the Federal Government is far below the population of Nigeria need the vaccine.”

Political Activist and Sahara Reporters Publisher, Omoyele Sowore, and his family are in pains.

His younger brother, Olajide Sowore, was killed by  gunmen, suspected to be herdsmen while travelling between Benin and Ondo in the early hours of Saturday, September 4th, 2021.

The late Olajide was  a Pharmacy student at the Igbinedion University, Okada, Edo State.

Announcing the demise of his brother, the 2019 Presidential Candidate of African Action Congress, AAC, said his brother’s death is a huge loss to his family and friends.

In a Press Release announcing his brother’s murder, he wrote:

“My immediate younger brother, Olajide Sowore was, today, shot and killed near Okada in Edo state by reportedly herdsmen /kidnappers on his way from Igbinedion University in Edo sate where he is studying Pharmacy.

“They snuffed out the life yet another real human being!

Rest In Power, “Dr. Mamiye!”

“This act in itself will not delay their day of justice.

“I traveled widely with you and our father as a little kid. You were the most loved robust kid I ever first knew. You, Mr. magnet, had no enemy!

“You, Mr. Sunshine Foundation, who made everyone happy.

“You, the boy who snuck out his older ones to parties, taking all the blames when our disciplinarian father found out.

“You, the guy who was an out-of-the-box thinker, who decided school wasn’t for you and created your own genre of music and then turned around to go to school after you almost turned 50!

“You lived your life so that everyone could be alright but now assassinated by everything that’s not alright!

“Saddest day yet!” Ondo State, under Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, SAN, became the latest State to adopt a law against open grazing, approved by the State House of Assembly and signed into law by the Governor.

Attacks by suspected herdsmen have been a menace in the State over the years.

It would be recalled that in 2019, daughter of Afenifere leader, Reuben Fasoranti, Funke Olakunrin, was killed by suspected herdsmen along the same route where Olajide Sowore was killed today.

NDDC Audit: Angry IYC calls for Akpabio’s Sack

0

By Uche Mbah

Piqued by the alleged gross mismanagement of funds and manipulations of the Niger Delta Development Commission, the Ijaw Youth Council has called on President Buhari to sack the Minister of Niger Delta, Godswill Akpabio while demanding for names of contractors who abandoned projects to be made public and defaulters prosecuted.

Akpabio had, while submitting the forensic suit report, insisted that 13,000 projects had been abandoned in the region since its inception.

Skeptics, however, allege that it will be an uphill task unmasking the contractors since many of them have links with powerful men in positions of authority.

Sources allege that some members of the National Assembly might be complicit.

The IYC president, Peter Igbifa, therefore called for a probe of the period under review.

In a statement Friday, Igbifa queried the reduction of board members of the commission.

“We appeal to the President to first publish the names of persons and companies behind this collective rape and destruction of our commonwealth.

“We want their names to be made public. We are challenging the Presidency  not to allow this to slide and end up as one of the empty consumed by the lack of political will.”

Canvassing for the inauguration of a substantive board, Igbifa said:

“We were told that Akpabio ensured that selfish recommendations were smuggled into the report. If these recommendations are implemented, they will deny states adequate representation on the Board and give Akpabio more time to continue running the NDDC with a sole administrator.

“For instance, we learned that there are recommendations for a part-time Board and reduction in the number of Board members.

“These suggestions are not feasible because they are designed to extend the sole administrative regime in the NDDC. They require amendments to the Act establishing the NDDC and this will take at least six months to achieve.

“Besides, how can you think of reducing the Board members? Which state are you going to exclude from the board? Or do you think IOCs should not be part of the board?

“These are selfish recommendations and we are calling on the Presidency to be careful to avoid promoting one man’s selfish tendencies ahead of the collective interest and development of the Niger Delta.

“We are calling on the President to sack Akpabio for all the embarrassment he has caused for the Presidency in his insatiable appetite to maintain his stranglehold on the NDDC.

“Since he has submitted the report, it is time for him to go home and allow the NDDC to have a fresh breath. His continued stay in office is an obstacle to President Buhari’s desire to inaugurate the Board of the commission.”

Opinion: NDDC Forensic Report: Testing Buhari’s Integrity

President Muhammadu Buhari
President Muhammadu Buhari

The battle lines were drawn, the drums of war drowning the initial applause that greeted the order for the financial probe of the corruption-riddled interventionist agency — the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, whose headquarters is in Port Harcourt, Rivers state.

The first salvo was fired by the Vice-President sometime in May 2019, while on a visit to Delta state. Professor Yomi Osibanjo had publicly declared the commission a non-performer having failed to fulfill its first mandate of developing the oil-rich Niger Delta, in nine out of 36 states. This shot by Buhari’s deputy had sent the signal that all was not well with the 19-year-old commission.

This created a loophole for the governors of the nine states to wake up from their slumber, and together they paid a visit to the President and demanded the probe of the NDDC. The move by the governors who were mostly of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party was seen as a political witchhunt against the APC, which was now in control of the commission. Many believed that the governors were on a mission to provoke the president against some of his party men from the region who were believed to have their fingers in the pie. But in a twist of fate, the president — realising the insidious agenda of the governors, rather than settle for a probe of the commission from the period APC took over the reins of government — decided to extend the period of the probe from the date of inception to 2019.

The governors were somehow trapped in their own nets, considering that the APC under Buhari had controlled the commission for five years out of the 19-year period. Some of them were actually involved in the sleaze that had characterised the NDDC, and in turn, underdeveloped the region

The responsibility of supervising the commission rightfully fell on the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs and the supervising Minister of the NDDC, Senator Godswill Akpabio, who was surprisingly appointed a Minister, having lost his earlier bid to return to the Senate, after a thunderous defection to the APC from the PDP. He was a former governor of Akwa Ibom state. Akpabio became the burden-bearer as those who were against the forensic audit of the commission let out all arsenals against him, all in a bid to frustrate the probe.

It is no longer news that the battleground became the national assembly as the two committees on NDDC in both houses pulled every string to stop the audit or at least to ensure that Akpabio, who was one of them in the 6th assembly, did not supervise the exercise. It was a widely celebrated battle which pitched the management of the commission against the national assembly. It was an epic battle even while the Covid pandemic threatened.

There were efforts to weaken the probe even as the national assembly fought back. One such ways was the stoppage of funds accrued to the commission, thereby, crippling every activity in the region through the NDDC. The international oil companies which were largely responsible for the funding of the commission were forced by the Economic Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to stop payments to the NDDC account domiciled at the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN. An account tagged, NDDC /EFCC was later opened with the CBN, and the IOCs were compelled to pay monies in there, and the EFCC ensured that neither the management of the commission nor the minister could access the funds.

While the whole drama was on, President Buhari did not bulge as he found a way to navigate out of the roadblocks posed by the national assembly. He chose to make available the funds for the forensic auditors and quickly had them inaugurated for the assignment. The urge by Akpabio to resign his appointment, at some point was deep, yet he was resilient to see to the end of the presidential order, to ascertain the reason why the region had remained underdeveloped in spite of all the monies released for projects.

After a painstaking period of two years, without any contracts awarded nor new projects executed, the forensic audit has been concluded. The president has received the report albeit through the attorney-general of the federation and the minister of justice, Abubakar Malami.

A record of over 13,000 jobs was said to have been awarded, mobilisation paid at 90% and yet, uncompleted or abandoned. A more scary revelation by Akpabio during the presentation of the report was that a whooping N3.2 trillion was paid out during the period in check, from 2001 to 2019. And additional N2.5 trillion from statutory and non-statutory income, bringing the total sum to N6 trillion from the inception of the commission till August 2019.

It is no longer surprising why the fight was intense to scuttle the probe as initial fingers pointed at members of the national assembly, past and present; political leaders and people of the region in active connivance with people outside the region; the security agencies and in some cases, from the presidency. Even though the president has shown enough commitment to further investigate and prosecute those to be indicted, there are still doubts in the minds of most Nigerians on the reality of his assurances. This stems from the belief that 75% of those involved in the merciless rape of the region’s resources are in his party and some, in his government. Again, there are those who think that the president only hires but fails to fire. Not minding the recent sack of two ministers.

While Buhari must be commended to toe the path where those before him failed, the president must complete the task by revealing the identities of those behind the monumental corruption in the Commission, no matter how veiled their identities are, considering that very many of the high profile persons may have used pseudo companies, and in some cases, withdrawn their membership of those companies from the Corporate Affairs Commission.

The man in the eye of the storm, Senator Akpabio will not be spared more arrows, for either doing a good job or a bad one; depending on which line of the divide he is viewed.

Even though it is not his probe, but Buhari’s!

The time for the president’s highly touted integrity to be put on a scale is now. His ability to resist the temptation of dumping the much-advertised audit will further prove his sincerity to spare no one, irrespective of whose ox is gored, and bring to book those who have voraciously cleaned out the resources of the poor people of the region that has continued to survive the nation’s economy, through oil and gas.

If the report is left in the hands of those who would use it as a tool for political witch hunt; or for “settlement”, then, there was no need in the first place for downing the tools and grinding the commission to a halt for a period of 2 years.

Whatever happens, we, the people of the region demand to know who did what and what is to become of the monies trapped in that phony safe tagged NDDC/EFCC account?

Igbo Presidency: Gov Umahi Hints Of His Future In APC

0

By James Orji

Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi state has given a hint about his future in the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC if the party refused to cede its 2023 Presidential ticket to the south east.

The governor is believed to have defected to the APC to actualize his presidential ambition. He is among prominent Igbo politicians clamoring that the region be given a shot at the president of the country for the first time.

Speaking on sundry issues, including the leadership crisis rocking the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP on Channel Television, on Friday the Ebonyi helmsman said he will be disappointed if his party failed to chose its presidential candidate from the south east.

According to him, deserved to be considered for the nation’s number one position having been left out for so long while other major political zones in the country took their turns for the presidency.

Umahi who left the PDP for APC last year said “The heartbeat of the people of the South-East is that they should be given a chance whether in the PDP or the APC for Presidency of this country for the reason of equity, fairness and justice,” he said.

“I took that position in the PDP and one of the reasons why I took that position is because the South-East people have supported the PDP all the way and they have never been given any opportunity to do that.”

The governor gives a hint about his membership of APC if his party refused to select an Igbo man as its presidential flagbearer.

He said “If I follow APC for this length of time, and they don’t give the South-East an opportunity, I will feel bad.

“I will feel bad if I stay the same length of time as I did in the PDP and that happens. But I can’t say what I will do. It depends on what God places in my mind,” he added.

Governor Umahi meanwhile, has described the predicament of the embattled National Chairman of PDP, Uche Secondus as self-inflicted. According to him, he saw the problem coming and had warned Secondus ahead of time that some powerful interest in the PDP will move against him.

He said those that want Secondus out as the leader of the party are suspicious of him that he will not serve their interest in the 2023 presidential election.

Umahi said “I won’t say I’m happy with what is happening to the chairman — Secondus — because he was a bit naive. When I was in PDP, I had a revelation from God and I prophesied that Obaseki was going to win,” he said.

“He (Obaseki) was in APC, I was in PDP. A governor of PDP instigated Secondus to set up a disciplinary committee against a sitting governor, and I was very upset about that.

“In humility, I submitted myself to that committee, but I know a particular governor who is the owner of PDP did that, and Secondus had to succumb to that and that divided their working committee.

“So, when I was leaving, I told them — do two things. I was told that the working committee, especially Secondus, was going to be unduly removed to give one man or two the leverage of owning the PDP.

“I said that should not happen, and I told Secondus and I told all the working committee when they visited me in Abuja.

“And the second one was — cede presidency to the south-east and we will all be together. Nut they did not. I think it is the will of God to be where I am and I’m very happy,” the governor said.

Parks and Gardens in Lagos

By Akinwale Kasali

The spate of insecurity in the nation has seen Parks and Gardens in the Center of Excellence as Lagos State is called, experience low turnout of fun seekers.

But giving fun seekers a sense  of relief and strengthening the security apparatus of the Lagos Parks and Gardens, the Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency, LASPARK has reiterated its commitment to collaborate with security agencies for the safety of Lagosians across the State.

The General Manager of LASPARK, Adetoun Popoola, stated that the reason for the creation of the parks is to promote recreation and leisure where people can relax and enjoy the scenery without fear from anyone.

“If the Gardens are beautiful and people can’t use them as a result of nefarious activities of miscreants, then the purpose for which they are created is defeated”, she said.

Popoola asserted that the mandate of LASPARK is to establish and maintain public parks and gardens in Lagos, adding that the agency will continue to live up to this responsibility by taking over contaminated and incidental open spaces, setbacks, roundabouts and transform them into leisure and entertainment spots.

Speaking further, the General Manager disclosed that LASPARK has an in-house monitoring and enforcement team that goes around daily to ensure the sites are free from criminal activities.

“Other units within the agency such as Operations, Vegetal, Tree Planting, Maintenance and Greener Lagos Managers (GLMs) spread across the six zones in the State, complement the efforts of the enforcements officers by raising issues spotted on-site and ensuring they are escalated to the appropriate authority”, she added.

Popoola emphasised that the agency will continue to collaborate with security agencies, whose duty is to maintain peace and order within the State to make parks and gardens also safe and secure for public use.

She, however, enjoined Lagosians to support the agency by reporting all untoward activities of hoodlums or miscreants noticed at any of the gardens through the agency’s social media platforms for a prompt response.

Tokyo 2020 Paralympics: Team Nigeria Returns With Eight Medals

By Akinwale Kasali

It was joy, praises and wild jubilation as the Nigerian contingent to the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics touched down at the Muritala Muhammad International Airport, Lagos, Nigeria, with medals won by them dangling on their necks.

The Minister of Sport, Sunday Dare, could not hide his joy as he showered encomiums on the Paralympians for doing the nation proud.

Dare  commended Team Nigeria to the Paralympics Games in Tokyo for its outstanding performance while receiving the contingent, stating that the medals won by the athletes were an indication that the country still had abundant talents that are yet to be discovered.

Dare declared that the Sports Ministry would continue to ensure special athletes get the required support to excel in their various sports, just as he called on private sectors to invest more in sports development in Nigeria.

He said that private sector investment in sports would go a long way in discovering more stars from the grassroots.

“The Nigeria Paralympics team has put smiles on the faces of Nigerians by winning medals at Tokyo Olympics. The Sports ministry is delighted with their performance. We thank the athletes who won medals, and also those who could not pick a medal for their zeal in putting Nigeria at the World map. More programmes will be put in place by the ministry to encourage the special athletes. I will like to also inform Nigerians that there will be an open trial for 10 sports for athletes without disabilities in two weeks time.

“Athletes across the federation who are talented in any of the sport are free to come and show case their skills at the event, which date and venue will be announced soon. This is another drive by the sports ministry to continue developing sports in Nigeria,” he said.

Team Nigeria won eight medals at the games slated to end this Sunday 5th, September, 2021, following the bronze won by Eucharia Njideka Iyiazi in the Women’s Shot Put F57 on Thursday.

Iyiazi won the bronze with a 10.40m throw after disappointingly finishing in the eighth position in Women’s Discuss throw event last Saturday.

The 47-year-old is competing at her fourth Paralympic Games having previously represented Nigeria in Beijing in 2008. London 2012 and Rio 2016.

While competing in the 2008 Summer Paralympics in Beijing, China, Iyiazi, won a gold medal in both the women’s shot put F57/F58 event and the women’s discus throw F57/F58 event.

Iyiazi however took the bronze medals in the 2012 Summer Paralympics and the 2016 Summer Paralympics.

Thursday’s medal in Tokyo for Iyiazi is coming barely 24 hours after the Table Tennis men’s team (Tajudeen Agunbiade and Olufemi Alabi) also won bronze in their event.

With three gold, one silver and three bronze medals, Nigeria has dropped to the 3rd spot in Africa and 32nd overall on the medals table.

Tunisia is the continent’s highest-ranked country in 26th position while Algeria is in the 29th position.

Interestingly, the top four African countries have all won three gold medals but with different silver and bronze medal winnings.

The remaining event for Nigeria in Tokyo is F54 Shot Put and Javelin where Lauritta Onye will be competing on Saturday.

Full list of medalists for Team Nigeria so far

Gov Fayemi: I am Not In Support Of Secession; Asks Youths To Shun Agitation

0

By Ayodele Oni

Ekiti State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi has urged Nigerian youths not to support Agitations for secession by some sections of the country.

He said they should rather see the country as one that is still in the hands of architects and builders who would determine its future rather than a fallen or collapsing edifice.

Governor Fayemi also stated that the task of nation building should be the responsibility of all generations, hence the need for young people to peacefully and actively engage in order to build a country of their dream.

Dr Fayemi, who spoke at a one day conference “The Discourse” at Obafemi Awolowo University, (OAU) Ile Ife, noted that there were diverse calls and agitations for the disintegration of the country with different ultra-nationalistic groups calling for secession.

He however said that the idea of remaking a nation “should not suggest a strategic demolition for us to erect a totally new structure”.

He said the focus of all Nigerians should be on how to reinvent the nation, work for the prosperity of our people and ensure peace and prosperity.

“The youth-led protests police brutality #EndSARS, which eventually metamorphosed into agitations for more holistic reforms on issues of good governance, accountability and greater inclusion of the youth demography which forms most of our population.

“We are today contending with a restive youth population who want a clean break from the baggage of the past, to embrace a future where everyone can live full and productive lives in a safe and secure country.

“Amid these issues, different groups have offered solutions, and continue to work hard at fixing the country.

“Others have a more fatalistic outlook, with calls and agitations for the disintegration of our country, and with different ultra-nationalistic groups calling for secession from Nigeria.

“I, therefore, tend to assume that the idea of arresting the drift of this nation towards the precipice itself stems from the latter mind-set that sees the country as a fallen or collapsing edifice rather than a country still in the hands of architects and builders who would determine its future.”

Governor Fayemi, maintained that the 1914 amalgamation of Nigeria was in order, saying the task of forging a nation out of this “colonial invention rests squarely in our hands.”

Dr Fayemi, who is also the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum,(NGF), whose paper was delivered by his Special Adviser on Communications and Strategy, Mr Akin Rotimi, pointed out that one major area that the successive generation has failed is in the tendency to stigmatise difference and weaponise diversity.

The Governor added that in order to confront these issues, Nigerians must start by first conquering the demon of mutual suspicion and distrust that has “poisoned our politics and subverted our will to achieve the necessary consensus that is so crucial to marching confidently towards our destiny as a great nation.

“Rather than bemoan the insensitivity of the skeptical comments made by veteran politicians regarding the abilities of young politicians, you should instead see them as summons to reflection and contemplation to explore the problems and prospects of youth in Nigerian politics today.

“All things considered, the biggest roadblocks on the highway of youths participation in politics are those laid by the youth themselves.

“It must be said that the emotional disposition of many young Nigerians towards their country and the political leadership, is pockmarked by cynicism and apathy.

“A perfunctory survey of youth-dominated social media suggests Nigerian youths have given up on our and her leaders. The cynicism and apathy demonstrated by so many youths are part of a larger crisis of trust. The biggest challenge facing us as democrats is rebuilding trust between the state and society.

“The road ahead is challenging, but I ask that you keep faith. I have no doubt that Nigeria is a viable country and that her place in the comity of great nations is well assured. With all hands on deck, we will make this land a place of pride.”
