IPOB: South East Economy Under Threat, Loses N10bn Daily-Umahi

By James Orji

The South East economy is losing over N10 billion daily each time the IPOB sit-at-home order is observed, Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi state has said.

Umahi who doubles as the chairman of South east governors’ forum raised the concern as the region’s economic activities buckled under the Indigenous People’s of Biafra, IPOB’s order to people to stay away from work.

IPOB said the action is necessary to put pressure on the federal government to release, Nnamdi Kanu, the Supreme leader of the group who is being tried for various offences, including terrorism by the Buhari administration.

The IPOB leader was arrested in Kenya in July by the authorities of that country in conjunction with Nigerian security agencies, and top members of the group have either been neutralised or arrested by security agencies.

At a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari, during his state visit to Imo state last week leaders from the zone had appealed to the president to release arrested IPOB members and dialogue with the group. Opinion leaders from the zone have repeatedly urged IPOB to stop its violence activities.

Speaking on the issue Umahi said the sit-at-home must not be allowed to continue, because of its potential to cripple the economy of the zone, adding that each time people stayed indoor the economy of the zone is suffering.

Governor Umahi and his counterpart in Anambra state, Willy Obiano had earlier threatened to sanction banks and market for obeying IPOB’s order.

“The markets should open. If they do not open, I would sack the leadership of the market and shut the market,” Obiano told traders at a meeting. Invisible voice says ‘sit at home?’ And, you just comply and lose money. You don’t know who says sit-at-home, you just lose money.

“You need to help us to solve this nonsense. It is absolute nonsense. That’s a warning. If you don’t do that, we will change your leadership,” Obiano said a fortnight ago after it was reported that the state cumulatively lost over N30 billion since the first ‘Black Monday’ announced by IPOB on August 9.

Umahi who spoke during a State Dinner organized in honour of the former Chief of Army Staff and Nigeria’s Ambassador to the Republic of Benin, Tukur Buratai, in Abakaliki explained that the order was adversely affecting the economy of the region.

He said the state would no longer subscribe to incessant calls for sit-at-home within the region, warning civil servants who stay away from work that they will lose their jobs.

According to him, “evil will continue to thrive if good people keep quiet; we must make Ebonyi State very exceptional by rising to the challenges. When we shout true federalism, I say I agree but it should be administrative restructuring, Ebonyi State is not in support of any State collecting VAT, we are in support that FIRS should continue to collect tax and share.

“We are destroying our economy, the sit at home is not happening in South West, the North is not sitting at home, each time we sit at home, we lose over N10 billion in our economy, so Ebonyi State will not sit at home any day, so I charge the commissioners to go all out and ensure that Civil Servants come to work, and for the markets, I will personally be in the markets tomorrow, anyone who is no longer interested in owning shops can go home.”

Uzodimma: I Will Recover All Imo Assets; Inaugurates Committee To Implement Whitepaper on land

Hope Uzodimma

The Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodimma has inaugurated the Whitepaper Implementation Committee on Lands and Other Related Matters, charging members to recover all the assets gazetted in the Whitepaper as recommended.

Performing the ceremony Monday at the Government House Exco Chambers Owerri, the Governor directed the Committee not only to recover as recommended by the Whitepaper all illegally acquired Imo assets but also recommend to Government how best to put into use the recovered assets.

The Judicial Panel On Land and Other Related Matters was set-up by former Governor Emeka Ihedioha, but inherited and sustained by Uzodimma who resisted every pressure to disband it and other such Panels as soon as he was sworn into office.

A Press Release by his Chief Press Secretary/Media Adviser, Oguwike Nwachuku  said Governor Uzodimma explained that “the implementation of the Whitepaper is of profound importance to the people of Imo State, as it is the final contract with the people upon which his administration will be judged.”

He described the action as an integral part of the Shared Prosperity Administration in Imo State, pointing out that with the implementation, the 3R mantra will be further amplified.

His words:  “You must implement the recommendations to the last letter as the demands of the Whitepaper is unambiguous. This is because both Government and peoples property were illegally and fragrantly acquired by few individuals and their cronies without regard to the rule of law.”

Considering the importance attached to the Committee’s assignment, the Governor asked them to “ensure that every aspect of the Whitepaper is implemented,” noting that Imo people expect nothing less.

“The recovery of all stolen Imo wealth is nothing but what the people need.”

On why there was delay in action, the Governor informed that there were lots of legal and court processes challenging the Whitepaper by those who are involved in the illegal acquisition.

He, however, pointed out that both the legal and judicial hurdles have been cleared, hence the Committee can now do its job without let or hindrance.

Regardless, the Governor warned over impunity and lawlessness against anybody or group who have genuine complaints to make to the Committee. He charged the members to be fair and firm, no matter whose ox is gored.

Reminding Nigerians of the essence of Panels of Inquiry and the attendant Whitepaper that follows it as well as the need to implement such outcomes, the Governor said that Whitepapers are to check excesses in both public and private service.

He reminded the audience that his determination to implement the various recommendations of the Whitepaper is to move the State forward and to ensure that the present and future Governments are governed by the rule of law.

He said in the process of achieving this, the Government owes no one apologies.

In his acceptance speech, the Chairman of the Committee, Prof. Ukachukwu Awuzie thanked the Governor on behalf of his colleagues for giving them the opportunity to serve the Government and good people of Imo State in that capacity and described the opportunity as a privilege.

Prof. Awuzie said the task given to them is unique as it is the first time in Imo governance that a Governor comes out boldly to institute a Committee to implement a Whitepaper on Lands and Related Matters and described the action as a “paradigm shift in Imo State governance in particular and other governments of the federation at large.”

He pleaded that any report brought against any of their members or the entire group before the Governor be critically examined before action can be taken against them.

He assured that his Committee will not compromise honour and integrity in carrying out its job and pledged on behalf of his members, to discharge their duty and assignment to the best of their ability.

Alleged members and/or sympathisers of  the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, IPOB, today took the enforcement of the sit-at-home order to a different level by stopping an examination organized by the West African Examination Council, WAEC.

They forced students and teachers of Comprehensive Secondary School, Nkume, in Njaba Local Government Area of Imo State to suspend their examination.

They were taking English Language Monday, 13th September 2021.

A report alleged that students in another Secondary school in Okigwe  were also stopped from writing their WAEC.

An eyewitness reported   that they came in a convoy of motorcycles and vehicles and shot sporadically in the air. They set ablaze motorcycles allegedly belonging to the teachers and chased them away.

This was collaborated by a viral video showing  billows of smoke in the school premises while teachers and students ran helter skshelter.

The exam monitors also ran away, as the invaders were said to have mounted their shooting range at the gate.

They were said to have entered the classrooms and, reminiscent of robbery activities, told everyone to lie down. They were told to go home and never return to school for the rest of the day.

The whole town was under heavy tension at the time of filing this report.

The IPOB had ordered sit at home to press home their demand for the release of their leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. Despite the suspension by IPOB of the order and its restriction to only the days Kanu would  it is being observed.

South-east  Governors have threatened to sack those who do not come to work but it has not deterred them.

On September 9, IPOB declared a-sit-at- home to coincide with  President Muhammadu Buhari’s visit to Imo State.

Tomorrow, September 14, IPOB has declared another sit-at-home home to commemorate the day soldiers invaded the country  home of Kanu’s parents which consequence was Kanu’s forced self-exile until  his recent arrest in Nairobi, Kenya.

The Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, has reacted to the reported jailbreak in Kabba, Kogi state, on the Monday morning of September 13.

A statement by the Media Adviser to the Minister, Mr Sola Fasure, explained that the Minister has been briefed by the Controller General of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS), Haliru Nababa, on the unfortunate attack.

The statement added that “During the attack, security officers on duty which comprised of 15 Soldiers, 10 Police Officers and 10 armed guards of the NCoS on duty fought gallantly to repel the attack.

“Regrettably, two officers of the Correctional Service are yet to be accounted for, while one soldier and a policeman lost their lives during the attack.

“The Kabba Custodial facility had 294 inmates as at the time of the attack, many of whom escaped after the gunmen used explosives to destroy three sides of the perimeter fence.

“However, there remains 28 inmates who didn’t escape. Some have also voluntarily returned to the facility as at this morning.

“The Controller General of the Nigeria Correctional Service, Haliru Nababa, is currently monitoring the situation.

“A tour of the facility is also ongoing. A Crisis Response Centre has been activated and a Special Task force mobilized to recapture escaped inmates whilst an Inter-Agency Security Task Force is already on the trail of the gunmen who attacked the facility.

“The public is advised to stay calm as the situation is under control.

The Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, assures the citizenry that Nigeria’s security forces will find the attackers and bring them to justice.

“We shall leave no stone unturned to bring them back to custody. We are also putting INTERPOL on notice with their details, in case any of them attempts fleeing outside our shores.

“To the fleeing inmates, escaping from lawful custody is a serious criminal offence. Law enforcement agencies and citizens are lawfully empowered to use all necessary means to arrest and bring you to justice.

“The Nigeria Correctional Service shall not be cowed by elements seeking to compromise the security of our nation; we shall deal with this situation with absolute resolve.

Further updates will be provided after the end of the preliminary assessment.”

Obi Backs Rivers On VAT, Attacks Gov Obiano

By James Orji

A former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi has added his voice to the ongoing legal battle between the Rivers state and federal government on the collection of the Value Added Tax, VAT, adding that state government should look inward to generate funds rather than depending solely on the allocation from the federal government.

An appeal by Federal Inland Revenue Service, FIRS, the agency that collect tax on behalf of the federal government demanding a reversal of the judgment of a federal High Court in Port Harcourt, is pending at the Court of Appeal in Abuja, which has ordered the parties in the litigation to maintain status quo.

Not a few Nigerians insist that the court will settle the issue in a manner that will set the country on the path of true federalism, as against the current situation where revenue shared by states and federal government is believed to be lopsided in favour of a particular section of the country.

Speaking on the issue, Obi a former Vice Presidential candidate said the revenue sharing formular has made some states in the country to be lazy. He demands an equitable sharing of revenue, adding that some state governments have become unproductive.

Recent reports claim that some states are likely to go bankrupt if states are allowed to collect VAT, even as Lagos state has joined Rivers to enact a law to that effect, with many other states in tow.

In fact, the six south west states are said to be considering putting up a joint front over the issue. Adamawa and Benue states have also indicated the readiness to collect VAT in their states.

Obi who spoke on Channels Television on Sunday said what is going on aligns with his previous position on fiscal federalism.

According to the former governor, “The country always concentrates on sharing, nobody is talking about how to generate income. Nobody is talking about production. The country is not productive, that is why we are preoccupied with sharing.

“If we are productive, it will be very easy for Nigeria to grow, be able to create jobs and do what others are doing.

“Every part of Nigeria has the potential to grow and compete and but we are not doing that.”

He said more focus should be directed towards investment rather than resource sharing, citing how he made Anambra an investment destination, regretting however that his successor failed to follow through with his laid out plan to make the state a big revenue earner.

The former governor said “Oil is a dead asset. With the plans we had when I was in office, if it was followed by the next administration, Anambra would have generated way more than Nigeria generates from oil.

“Because when you talk about oil, how much are you (Nigeria) getting from oil? $18 billion, that’s all we are getting from oil,” he said.

He said the future of Nigeria is not crude oil, but information technology which has the potential to generate into the federation account billions of dollars.

“If you do these investments properly, pull your people out of poverty, you would see that the money you are talking in terms of what we are getting from oil is not much. I believe in fiscal federalism, it will help the country grow. At this point, the country is not growing and productivity is very low,” the politician said.
