By Akinwale Kasali

On a day Nigerians lamented the loss by Anthony Joshua of all his world boxing champions, the D’Tigress of Nigeria gave them a gift to be proud of.

The team has become the second country in the continent to win the Female FIBA Afrobasket Championship for the third time consecutively, after Senegal achieved same feat in 1970.

As earlier promised by Coach Otis Hughley Jnr that his team would go all out to defend the the title it won in 2017 and 2019, they did not disappoint their teeming fans with a 70-59 score line against their Malian counterparts at the Palais Polyvalent Des Sport Arena in Yaoundé, Cameroon.

The Nigerian senior women’s basketball team recorded a historic achievement by winning the Afrobasket championship with an outstanding display and impressive performance throughout the competition.

The final against Mali saw a more determined team that was gunning for victory. The team was focused on their objective of breaking records in the final against Mali, and qualifying for the FIBA World Cup in Australia next year, setting the ball rolling in the first quarter with a 22-11 lead, before the Malians bounced back to take the second quarter 13-9, reducing the tally and making it a tight contest at half-time.

The experience of D’Tigress Captain, Adaora Elonu, and the duo of  Victoria Macaulay and Ezinne Kalu worked so well with the team and they won 28-14 in the third quarter to give the Malians an Herculean task in getting back into the fierce contest.

In the 4th quarter, the Malians put a strong fight, but they couldn’t withstand the resilience of their more compact and determined opponent, that sustained the momentum, making the late rally of the Malians not yielding any good result, despite the late fight to win the 4th quarter 21-11 and reduced the deficit to 11 points.

The National team best performer for the final was Macaulay, garnering 15 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steals and 3 blocks.

The team of the tournament saw Elonu and Kalu commanding a place in the tournament’s All-Star 5.

Elonu was also voted the Most Valuable Player, MVP of the tournament.

The victory saw the D’Tigress winning its 5th Afrobasket title with previous successes in 2003 and 2005, and also qualifying for the 2022 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Australia.

Eleven students of Bethel Secondary School Students remain in the custody of Bandits who abducted them from their school in Kaduna, several weeks ago.

This is as Rev. Joseph John Hayab, the Chairman, Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Kaduna Chapter announced the release of 10 more of the Students by Bandits.

Over 150 Students were abducted from the School by Bandits who have been releasing them in batches.

Announcing the release of the Students, Rev. Hayab in a WhatsApp message to Media Houses said: “Ten more students of Baptist High School were released this afternoon. We have 11 now with bandits.

“We are thanking all Nigerians for their prayers and support.

“We are trusting God that the rest will be released very soon. All have been reunited with their parents.”

The Clergyman did not disclose whether any ransom was paid before the release of the Students, just the same way it was not disclosed when some of the students were released weeks back.

Kaduna has become the epicentre of kidnapping of Students, forcing the Kaduna State Government to close down schools. It has just announced the resumption of schools, and parents are both nervous and on edge.

Insecurity: OPC Alleges Sheikh Gumi Spy For Bandits

By Akinwale Kasali

Sheikh Ahmad Gumi’s activities, fraternity and seeming support for Bandits have been criticized from different quarters, as calls for the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Administration to curtail his excesses and support for the dreaded Bandits have fallen on deaf ears.

However, the Oodua Peoples Congress, OPC, Oyo State Chapter, under the leadership of Iba Gani Adams, the Aare Onakakanfo of Yoruba land, has alleged that the Bandits Chief Negotiator could be a spy for Bandits.

In a chat with newsmen over the weekend, the Oyo State Chapter Coordinator, Rotimi Olumo, queried the motive and rationale over the unwarranted and unexpected visit of Gumi to Igboho, a town in Oyo State.

Olumo said it was an affront to the entire Yoruba nation for Gumi to have visited the South West, stressing that he outstepped his bounds and warned him to steer clear of all parts of the South-Western region of Yoruba land.

The OPC Coordinator in the State said that Gumi is a security threat to the entire nation, because his visit was uncalled for, as there was no interest he (Gumi) served, except to make a mockery of the people in the South West.

Olumo added that the verbal attack by Gumi and his entourage on Igboho was a clear manifestation that they were there to ridicule and provoke Yoruba people in their domain, which the OPC frowned upon.

“We the Yorubas don’t  need the assistance or support of a Spy for Bandits to protect “our people” as adequate measures have been put in place to secure the region.

“Gumi cannot be trusted in anyway. The Yorubas need adequate vigilance from the people of the entire South-West and be battle ready, because Gumi’s visit to the region is suspicious”.

Forex Racket: More Banks Set To Expose Dubious Customers

By Fola James

Commercial banks in the country are compiling names and Bank Verification Number, BVN of customers involved in forex malpractice with the aim of publishing the same, the magazine has learnt. The development comes as tier one bank UBA published names and BVN of three customers, it claimed failed to return unspent forex to the bank.

The bank, had in a report on its website, mentioned three customers it accused of not returning unused forex to the bank. Its decision to expose the customers, the lender said is “In compliance with the directive of Central Bank of Nigeria mandating banks to publish the names of defaulters of the forex exchange regulation, based on regulatory directives, the following customers cancelled their trip and failed to return the PTA availed to them despite several mails, text messages and follow up phone calls.”

Close watchers in the industry informed the magazine that other banks will follow suit in a matter of days due to serious infractions going on among customers despite warning by the Godwin Emefiele-led apex bank that anyone caught in forex racketeering will be punished.

“Many customers are not ready to obey the rules. The only way out is for these people to be exposed and punished. When this is done it will serve as a warning to others who may want to circumvent the rules. But my worry is that the commercial banks are not likely to publish the names of big players, except those of small customers who have no Godfather,” a source said.

But some top executives of the banks who spoke to the magazine on the issue, said the banks are already cooperating with the apex bank on the matter. “We have no other option than to abide by the rules set by the Regulator on forex transactions. It is in our interest and that of the country to do so,” a director of a tier one bank told the magazine

Another source said “some customers have already been warned to return unspent forex. We have sent text messages and in some cases letters to them. We are still expecting their response. Anytime from now we will let the public know who they are, because we are not prepared to risk the relationship we have with the Regulator.”

The CBN had last month directed banks to publish the details of customers involved in forex malpractice, failure to do so will attract sanctions, the government bank said.

According to a circular addressed to all banks on August 30, and signed by the bank’s Director, Banking Supervision Department, Haruna Mustafa, the apex bank said it has noticed fraudulent practices, which include the use of fake visas and cancellation of air tickets after purchase of Personal Travel Allowance and Business Travel Allowance among customers.

CBN warned that “this trend, if not curbed, portends risk to the integrity and stability of the forex market.

“Consequently, further to the various measures already put in place, all banks are hereby directed to publish on their websites the names and BVN of defaulting customers who present fake travel documents or cancel their tickets and fail to return the purchased PTA/BTA within two (weeks) as stipulated in the customer declaration form signed by them.”

In spite of the warning the apex bank said on September 11 that the sharp practices still continued, following which it threatened to withdraw the license of any commercial bank who failed to expose any customer involved in foreign exchange malpractice.

According to a letter addressed to all banks in the country and signed by OS Nnanji CBN’s Director, Trade and Exchange Department the apex bank said it will not hesitate to descend heavily on collaborating banks.

In the letter titled “Observance of Due Diligence In the Processing of Foreign Exchange Transactions,” the CBN said the banks must know the full details of customers who purchase forex from them.

The apex bank said “In line with the continuing close surveillance of our foreign markets in general and the foreign exchange market in particular, the CBN wishes to remind all banks that it is their responsibility to not only know their customers (KYC requirements) but also know their customers’ business KYCB requirements,” the letter said.

“Given these responsibilities, and in view of recent occurrences in the market, the CBN would like to remind us to desist from all and any forms of FX malpractices.

“We wish to reiterate that the FX operating license of any bank or banks that are found culpable with ongoing investigations would be suspended for at least one year.”

The CBN stopped the sales of forex to Bureau de Change, BDCs in July after it accused them of funding Boko Haram and bandits. Since then, the bank has been allocating foreign exchange to banks who now sell directly to customers.

Tinubu: What’s Next?

Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Muhammedu Buhari in London

By James Orji

The political atmosphere of the country has become charged with the return of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu to Nigeria on Sunday. The former Lagos Governor and All Progressives Congress, APC chieftain came back to the country after spending three months in London to take care of his failing health.

While he was away, his London abode became a mecca of sorts for top politicians in the country, including President Muhammadu Buhari.

But now that he’s back, close watchers of development in the country insist that his Bourdillon, Ikoyi Home will become a beehive of activity within days, particularly for his supporters who are waiting for him to declare his presidential ambition.

Even though the APC chieftain has yet to make any pronouncement on the issue, close watchers of events said it is a matter of time before he did, considering those rooting for him to be the next occupier of Aso Rock, Nigeria’s seat of power.

“The Asiwaju is back. We have been waiting for him to tell us what is the next line of action for the next dispensation. We are sure he will not mislead us. We trust him to give directions on this very important matter,” a chieftain of the APC in Lagos said on Monday.

Judging by the current political atmosphere in the country, the former Lagos governor appears to have arrived at the material time when top politicians are drumming up support for him. In two years time.

The latest of such is Salihu Tanko Yakasai, a former Special Adviser on Media to Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje who listed the former governor as one of the top politicians in the country highly favoured to take the baton of leadership from Buhari.

Speaking last week on the need to zone the presidency to the South west, the former spokesman of the Kano helmsman placed Tinubu on top of three other politicians, who he explained are qualified to take over from the incumbent.

According to him “There are a number of them. We have Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu; we have the Vice-President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo; and to some extent, Governor of Ekiti that is being put out there as a potential candidate.

“All these people are potential candidates that the party can go for; anyone of them.” Considering that Tinubu is a strong ally of Governor Ganduje, analysts said the position of his former aide may not be farfetched on where the governor stands on the issue, considering that the former Lagos Governor was said to have played a major role in his return to office for a second tenure.

Before Yakassai spoke on the matter, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo state had during his visit to Tinubu in London disclosed that the APC strongman will determine the direction of the South west concerning the 2023 presidency.

Describing Tinubu as the “Capone” of the party in South-West, Akeredolu said his supporters are waiting “for the national leader, we are waiting for him to come so that critical decisions could be taken. He is our leader in the South and the one we can call our Capone.”

Analysts have also pointed out that the calibre of politicians who visited Tinubu in London indicates his rising popularity in the country as the presidential election is fast approaching.

Those that visited him cut across the country, even though they were mainly members of his party, APC.

In spite of this, many insist that the presidential ticket will not be delivered to Tinubu al carte- if and when he declared his ambition- considering that some interests in the ruling party have also planning to support other notable politicians from the party, which include Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, to take over from Buhari.

Apart from Osinbajo, politicians in the APC that are likely to challenge Tinubu for the presidency are Governors Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti state and Yahaya Bello of Kogi state, who has already declared that he will take a shot at the presidency in 2023.

The question on the lips of not a few Nigerians, is whether the Lagos strongman will seize the current momentum to declare his ambition for the nation’s highest office.

Imo Youth Cucumber Farmer

William Eke, a youth farmer from Ngor Okpala Local Government Area of Imo State has expressed his gratitude to Governor Hope Uzodinma over the support from him that has helped in his cucumber farming.

Eke, popularly known for his “Ngor Okpala cucumber” made the disclosure  on Friday when he paid an official visit to the Chief Press Secretary and Media Adviser to the Governor, Oguwike Nwachuku in his office.

The cucumber farmer said that he had received a lot of support in form of fertiliser from Governor Uzodimma, noting that the Governor had also made it possible for him to use Government facilities in Ngor Okpala Council to ply his trade.

Eke who said he started his cucumber farming with only N10,000 on a small space said today, he is proud of what he does and the gains therefore.

He said he remains grateful to the Governor and will continue to support his 3-R mantra administration.

He cautioned his fellow youths not to despise agriculture “because the sector has a lot of potential for them as government white collar jobs are no longer available.”

Eke who lauded the Chief Press Secretary and Media Adviser to the Governor for his professional competence hinted that he has also mentored many youths from different parts of the state who are desirous of being proud farmers like himself. “There is joy in being independent and earning a  decent living.”

He, however, solicited further assistance from the government in the area of transportation, seedlings, insecticides and even cash, as he intends to add onion, cabbage and tomatoes farming to the existing cucumber production.

Responding, Mr. Nwachuku congratulated Eke for the forsight in discovering his talent and passion early enough and urged him to remain focused in what he is doing.

The governor’s spokesman said Eke demonstrated heart of gratitude by coming to thank His Excellency for assisting him grow in his vocation, noting that the cucumber farmer  represents the class of youths Governor Uzodimma is hungry to assist to pursue their dreams.

Mr. Nwachuku said he is not only proud of Eke, but that the Governor, the government and people of Imo State are proud of him.

Amid Uncertainties on Zoning, PDP Shifts Deadline for Submission of Nomination Forms

0

By Uche Mbah

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP has shifted the deadline for submission of completed nomination forms for State Congresses to Oct. 1.

The earlier announced date for closing of nomination was September 23.

Kola Ologbondiyan, the Party’s National Publicity Secretary, said in a release in Abuja Sunday that the affected states are Adamawa, Borno, Ebonyi, Kebbi, Kwara, Lagos, and Oyo. This was under powers given to the party by the PDP constitution of 2017 as amended, he said.

Meanwhile, the party has not yet publicly announced a zoning formula for the 2023 presidential elections. Though the Governor Ifeanyi-Ugwuanyi led committee sat recently, sources within the party hierarchy indicate that they are playing hide and seek game with the All Progressives Congress, APC.

“We are waiting to see how APC will zone their offices. If they zone it to South, then we will likely zone it to the North.”

Speculations are rife that the APC may float Osinbajo/Zulum ticket since the odds against former governor of Lagos State, Bola Tinubu, is getting worse by the day, with the general feelings that he was instrumental in bringing in the current Government, apart from health challenges.

But none of these is official.

It was gathered that all delegates from the North supported getting the Chairman from the South, which will leave the only option for the Presidency to come from the North.

Aminu Tambuwal, the Sokoto State Governor, appears to be the runaway choice of the Caliphate, while Atiku Abubakar, the old warhorse is not giving up yet.

But out of the eight delegates for the Ugwuanyi committee, from the Southeast, they were split in the middle with four supporting a Northern presidency.

Nyesom Wike, Governor of Rivers State, insisted on the Chairman coming from the Southwest.

Olagunsoye Oyinola is being fingered. But stakeholders feel Wike is fond of installing Chairmen and dumping them later if they refuse to dance to his tunes.

Bianca: Obiano Said Ojukwu Dead, No Longer Relevant; Insists APGA Disrespeted Husband

0
Bianca Ojukwu

By Charles Igbo

Widow of Ikemba Chukwuemeka Odimegwu Ojukwu, Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu has lamented the disrespect to her husband’s memory by the Governor of Anambra State, Willie Obiano and APGA, a party which supreme leader her husband was until his death.

She said Obiano once said Ojukwu was dead, and was no longer relevant in the affairs of the party. She, also, said that both APGA, as a party, and Obiano as the Governor, have treated her husband’s memory with disrespect and disdain.

Bianca, who spoke on Sunday, in Awka, was reacting to questions on her conspicous absence at the grand flag-off of the campaign of APGA Governorship candidate, Professor Charles Soludo.

She said her presence would have been an endorsement of the fraud APGA has, allegedly, become since 2018.

Mrs Ojukwu was, surprisingly, defeated in the APGA Senatorial primary under Obiano’s watch. Her defeat enraged not a few Igbo who felt she was set up for humiliation, and by extension, the humiliation of her late husband. They felt that, out of respect for the Ikemba, the ticket ought to have been given to Bianca. Since then, there has been no love lost between Bianca and Obiano and APGA.

Bianca, also, pointed out that her husband’s photograph has been removed from APGA’s customized campaign uniform, unlike the previous years, and replaced with that of Obiano, just to emphasize Obiano’s submission that her husband was dead and no longer relevant. Even then, some party faithfuls wore the old uniform which bore Ojukwu’s image. But she also found that offensive.

Governor Wille Obiano of Anambra State
Governor Wille Obiano of Anambra State

Her words: “It is an irony that today, Governor Willie Obiano has resuscitated Dim Ojukwu’s pictures for use in campaigning for the upcoming elections in Anambra.

“This is the height of opportunism and hypocrisy. Is Ojukwu not the same man Obiano once described as a dead man who was no longer relevant in the party?

“Why should I permit him to keep trampling on the legacy of my late husband who  put his heart and soul in the party?

“Ojukwu should not be like a light switch that should be turned on for party campaign, and be turned off once election is won.”

On the campaign uniform, Bianca said: ” It is most unfortunate that Governor Obiano decided to remove the picture of Ojukwu and replace same with his own just to drive home his statement that he would no longer tie the fate and fortunes of APGA to the memory of a dead man, obviously in reference to my husband.”

Breaking: Tinubu Returns, Limping

Bola Tinubu Returns to Nigeria

By Gideon Njoku

Finally, the National leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu has returned to Nigeria.

He returned Sunday morning, but with an obvious limp on his right leg.

He discarded the walking stick which he was seen using in London at the time President Muhammadu Buhari went to visit him.

Donning his signature cap, he wore a simple white caftan.

Tinubu has been in the United Kingdom, since July, 2021 attending to his health. He, allegedly, had a knee cap replacement, probably, the right knee. He missed out in many political and social activities.

His residence in London became a Mecca of sorts for Nigerian politicians, including National Assembly members, State Governors, and a delegation  from the Lagos State House  of Assembly.

It is expected that with his return, his Bourdillion, Ikoyi Lagos residence will witness a large number of politicians, and that political activities in the South-west, in particular, will pick up.

Even though Tinubu has neither confirmed nor denied it, he is very strongly speculated to be eyeing the Presidential seat in 2023. His campaign has since taken off by a number of groups and associates.

Last week, Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, SAN, described Tinubu as the “Capon” of the South, and said they were waiting for him for direction.

It’s Fake News, Arthur Eze Not Dead

0

By Gideon Njoku

The news was splashed on a couple of platforms that oil and money man, Chief Arthur Eze, popular as Ozoigbondu, was dead.

The news came early Sunday morning of September 26, 2021.

Not a few people, especially, in the South-east zone, and more especially in his Anambra State were shocked as they never heard he was ill. It worsened when there was no statement to either confirm or deny it.

But those who know him say that is not his style. He is not a man of too much protocol, and press releases. He has his own style which he deployed to the maximum Sunday morning.

A staunch member of the Anglican Communion, it is not known if he goes to Church every Sunday, especially during this time of COVID-19.

This Sunday, however, to make a point, he made a song and dance of it. Before he left for Church, a group of, mostly, young men came to confirm he was alive. And in a video which they posted, Eze was seen in an all-white outfit in a photograph with them, with one of them running commentaries.

“This is Chief Arthue Eze. He  is not dead. He is alive and strong. He is doing many things for us, and he will continue. He is strong. Look at him shaking hands. And now, he is entering his car, his Mercedes to go to Church.”

The show did not end there. It continued inside the Church where Eze was seen, along with others, going to give his offering. He did not dance as some other members of the congregation did. But an aide who also wore white followed closely behind him, and when it was Eze’s turn to  put in his own offering, he turned and took a fat, white, envelope from the aide and put it inside the offering bag. Point made.

Such fake news announcing the death of prominent Nigerians have become common. At times, it is political.

Weeks ago, it was that of Bauchi Senator Adamu Bulkachuwa, the Senate Committee Chair of Foreign Relations. He was forced to say: “I am alive.”

For the records, the Senator is married to the immediate past President of the Court of Appeal.
