Kano: Commissioner Knocks Gov Yusuf’s Defection, Resigns

0

Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano state government has witnessed the resignation of one of its cabinet members following the governor’s defection, on Friday, to the ruling All Progressives congress, APC.

On Sunday, the state commissioner for Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr Yusuf Ibrahim Kofarmata announced his exit from the administration.

The governor came to office on the platform of the New Nigerian Peoples Party, NNPP in 2023.

But he left the party on whose crest he wrote to office three years ago to the ruling party last week, citing the leadership crisis in the NNPP.

Political analysts however insist that he was forced to leave the NNPP because of the irreconcilable differences between him and his estrange  political godfather, Rabiu Kwankwaso, a former governor of the state.

The governor had while defecting last Thursday claimed that the entire members of the State Executive Council, National Assembly Members, State Assembly lawmakers and other political appointees defected with him.

This may not be true from all indications, as one of his commissioners has resigned his appointment, saying he’s not in the same page with the governor’s decision to defect to another party.

Majority of the appointees in the state were nominees of the former governor.

According to Dr Kofarmata, the governor has abandoned the political ideals that brought him to power, as such, he has decided to leave the cabinet, saying his decision was taken in good faith, he appreciate the opportunity given to serve the state.

In a terse resignation statement dated 25 January 2026 Dr. Kofarmata said he could no longer serve in the Governor Yusuf administration because he has derailed from the ideology that brought him to office.

“I hereby resign my appointment as the Commissioner and Member of the Kano State Executive Council. I took this decision in good faith, as I cannot continue to work under a government that derailed from the ideology that brought it to power,” he said.

Meanwhile, the magazine has learnt form competent sources in the state that some political appointees are likely to leave the government in the coming days as further clash between Governor Yusuf and Kwakwanso is expected as a fall out of his recent defection.

As Civil Societies Organizations, (CSOs) advised against arraignment of Human Rights lawyer, Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN), by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) on Monday, the Nigerian Bar Association’s (NBA) has welcomed the arraignment.

NBA’s Anti-Corruption Committee see the three-count criminal charge filed against Ozekhome by the ICPC as a welcome development.

The chairman of the NBA Anti-Corruption Committee, Prof. Babafemi Badejo, who stated this in an exclusive interview, praised the ICPC for filing the charge, which allows the embattled lawyer the opportunity to defend himself.

Prof. Badejo, however, noted that the ICPC’s action also gives the senior advocate, Ozekhome, the opportunity to clear his name.

He said: “The ICPC has a formidable task of proving the charges beyond a reasonable doubt.

“I commend the chairman of the ICPC, Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN, and his team for their courageous investigation into issues arising from the now popular Tali Shani London property case.

“Additionally, ensuring Chief Ozekhome, SAN, receives a fair trial in court is vital as part of a broader effort to enhance the rule of law in Nigeria. This prosecution directly challenges the culture of impunity in such matters.”

According to him, upholding the rule of law requires that the judicial process be fair and impartial rather than influenced by the media.

He expressed hope that the Federal High Court in Abuja will perform its duty without bias.

The ICPC had dragged the Human Rights Lawyer, to Court over an alleged forgery in UK Property Case.

In the charge, he was accused of forgery and the use of false documents in a property case in the United Kingdom.

The three-count charge, marked FCT/HC/CR/010/2026, was filed before a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, by Osuobeni Akponimisingha, head of the prosecution department of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

In the charge, Ozekhome was accused of knowingly presenting forged documents, including a Nigerian international passport, to support his claim of ownership of a property located at 79 Randall Avenue, London NW2 7SX, during proceedings before the London First-Tier Tribunal.

The alleged offences were committed sometime in August 2021 in the Maitama area of the nation’s capital, within the jurisdiction of the FCT High Court.

The charge sheet contains three counts bordering on giving false information, the use of forged documents, and attempting to deceive a public authority.

The senior advocate is accused of knowingly receiving the London property at 79 Randall Avenue, which he allegedly had no lawful right to; creating a false Nigerian passport in the name of Shani Tali to support his claim to the property and dishonestly using the forged passport to assert ownership of the property.

The federal government listed several witnesses it intends to call during the trial, including its investigators and a representative of the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS).

Documents to be tendered as exhibits include the judgment of the London First-Tier Tribunal, extra-judicial statements, letters from relevant authorities, and passport data relating to Shani Tali.

The controversy involves a property located at 79 Randall Avenue, London NW2 7SX.

Named in the property dispute are Ozekhome and Jeremiah Useni, a retired lieutenant-general who is now deceased.

It was filed at the First-Tier Tribunal (Property Chamber) Land Registration, UK, under case number REF/2023/0155, with Tali Shani as the applicant and Ozekhome as the respondent.

The property had been claimed by Ms. Tali Shani on one hand and Ozekhome on the other.

Ozekhome said he received the house as a gift from Mr. Tali Shani in 2021, while lawyers for Ms. Shani insisted she was the rightful owner of the property.

One of the requests of the Olubadan of Ibadan, in Oyo state, Oba Rasheed Ladoja during his recent visit to President Bola Tinubu in Aso Rock, Abuja, was the possible lifting of restriction of movement clamped on one of the Yoruba agitators, Sunday Igboho.

Oba Ladoja had paid a courtesy call on President Tinubu, a day after the Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, also visited Aso Rock.

Already, a wave of excitement and relief is spreading across the Southwest and beyond as the long-standing restriction on the name of Igboho is said to have been been finally been lifted.

Report circulating in the South West area indicate that the development means that Sunday Igboho is now free to return to Nigeria anytime he chooses — a moment many supporters have waited for with hope and patience.

The royal visit is widely believed to have played a significant role in opening doors for reconciliation, dialogue, and peaceful resolution behind the scenes.

Sunday Igboho has since expressed deep appreciation to Oba Rasheed Ladoja for standing firmly by him during difficult times.

Senator Ali Ndume

Senator Ali Ndume has applauded the military on the ongoing onslaughts against Boko Haram terrorists in Borno state, saying the the nation’s Service Chiefs have achieved a lot since the beginning of January this year, to bring the over 16 years activities of the insurgent to an end.

he also lauded the cooperation among the governors of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa in sustaining the fight against insurgents in the North east.
According to the Senator, representing Borno North the military has now taken the fight to the insurgents after many years of allowing them to dictate the pace of the battle. He said he has always advocated for a proactive measures against the insurgents, saying the military has now decide to take the bull by the horns instead of waiting for the terrorists to attack first before reacting.

the former Chairman, Senate Committee on Army also  called on the military to sustain the fight and ensure that the terrorists are routed from their hideouts, praising the Chief of Army Staff,  Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, and the Theatre Commander of ‘Operation Hadin Kai’ and troops for their commitment to end the close to two decades of Boko Haram insurgency in the country.
Ndume: “For many years ago, I was one of the strong advocates, calling upon the Military to take the war to the doorsteps of insurgents, and to remain proactive rather than reactive. I am happy because this is what is manifested now against terrorists.
“I humbly call on the military authorities to sustain the ongoing operations in the Sambisa Forests, Mandara Mountains bordering the Cameroun Republic, the Timbuktu Triangle and shores of the Lake Chad region to stem the tide of Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists.”

The magazine reports that troops of Operation Hadin Kai has recorded huge success in their onslaught against the insurgents in places such as the Sambisa Forest, Timbuktu Triangle, Mandara Mountains near the Cameroon border, among others places in the North east as they stepped up attacks on the terrorists in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states.
In the past few days, troops operating under Operation DESERT SANITY V, have neutralized two senior Boko Haram/ISWAP commanders and eight other terrorists in the Sambisa Forest and Mandara Mountains near the Cameroon border.

Also, the OPHK troops recently captured the mosque of a notorious ISWAP leader, Abu Ayuba and destroyed his residence during raids on his hideouts in the Timbuktu Triangle and Sambisa Forest area. Ayuba, a notorious ISWAP leader and Wali (Governor) of the Timbuktu Triangle, narrowly escaped the attack. The mosque had served as a key planning hub for ISWAP operations for years.

In a statement released last week, Lt. Col. Sani Uba, Information Manager of the Joint Task Force North East, OPHK, said the troops of the OPHK had delivered a decisive blow on terrorists around the Sambisa and Mandara Mountains, while they were planning to lay an ambush against the troops.

He said “OPHK troops delivered a decisive blow to BH/ISWAP terrorists along the Sambisa and Mandara Mountains axis on 22 January 2026. At around 0930 hours, insurgents attempted a well-planned ambush with roadside improvised explosive devices (RSIED) and heavy gunfire, but troops under Sector 1 responded with superior firepower, neutralizing 10 terrorists, including two senior commanders identified as Basulhu and Ubaida.”
He added that follow-up operations led to the recovery of three AK-47 rifles, one pump-action rifle, five motorcycles, two hand grenades, two Baofeng radios, 12 AK-47 magazines, a rocket-propelled grenade charger, detonation cords, batteries, bandoliers, camel bags, iron bars, and IED accessories.
“On a separate axis, Sector 1 troops engaged terrorists around the Malkube area, recovering additional AK-47 rifles, ammunition, and communication devices, while neutralizing two more insurgents with no casualties to our personnel,” Lt. Col. Uba explained.
Earlier, another battle group repelled BH/ISWAP elements attempting to infiltrate from Cameroon near Galakura, forcing them to withdraw in disarray. Exploitation of the area yielded insurgent equipment, including two motorcycles, further denying the terrorists freedom of action. Troop morale and combat efficiency remain high, and operations will be sustained across the North East region.”

UK Property Scandal: CSOs Urge Tinubu To Intervene, Halt Arraignment Of Fellow Activist

Mike Ozekhome

By Ayodele Oni

As all is set for arraignment of Human Rights icon, Chief Mike Ozekhome, SAN, before a Federal High Court, (FHC), in Abuja on Monday, a Coalition of Civil Society Groups for Peace, Security, Good Governance, Equity and Justice has urged President Bola Tinubu to intervene in the matter.

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) had dragged the Human Rights Lawyer, Ozekhome, to Court over Alleged Forgery in the United Kingdom, (UK) Property Case.

The federal government had filed a criminal charge against Chief Ozekhome.

In a statement made available to the media over the weekend signed by the Coordinator of the CSOs, Comrade James Okoronkwo, the group said, “We respectfully call on the President, as the Father of the Nation, to intervene and halt the scheduled arraignment of human rights icon, Chief Mike Ozekhome, SAN, slated for Monday, January 26, 2026, at the FCT High Court.

“As a coalition dedicated to the principles of equity and national stability, we believe that bringing a man of Chief Ozekhome’s standing—who has served for over 40 years as the “Senior Advocate of the Masses”—to a criminal dock over a matter that is essentially a civil property dispute serves no public interest.

“Such a move risks damaging the nation’s democratic image and demoralising the human rights community.

“Chief Mike Ozekhome is a national asset and a veteran of the pro-democracy struggle. We remind Mr President that Chief Ozekhome was a steadfast comrade-in-arms during the NADECO struggle against military tyranny.

“It would be a historical tragedy for a veteran of that struggle to face criminal prosecution under an administration led by a fellow veteran.

“For four decades, the learned Silk has offered his brilliance pro bono to the oppressed. Subjecting a 68-year-old icon to the rigours of a criminal trial over administrative technicalities is an avoidable stain on our judicial history.

“We humbly pray that Mr President directs the Attorney-General of the Federation, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, to review the case file and seek an administrative resolution.

“We plead for the arraignment to be halted in the interest of national peace and the honour of our democratic journey.”

Tax Laws Alteration: Downplaying Minority Caucus’ Report Will Enable Impunity, Ogene Tells House Deputy Spokesperson

0
Victor Ogene

My attention has been drawn to the dismissive statement by the the Deputy Spokesperson of the House of Representatives, Hon. Philip Agbese, on Saturday, that the interim report by the Minority Caucus Ad-hoc Committee, which I chair, on alleged alterations in the Tax Reforms Acts has been overtaken by events, following the release of the Certified True Copies (CTCs) of the laws.

  1. I would have dismissed the comments as  mere personal viewpoint of a colleague, but having previously served as Deputy Spokesperson of the 7th House of Representatives, 15 years ago, I am cognisant of the responsibilities and public expectations attendant to such a position, particularly in communicating on behalf of and upholding the integrity of the legislative institution and democratic processes. I am therefore perplexed as to why he has assumed the role of spokesperson for the Executive in this matter.
  1. For context and clarity, the Minority Caucus Ad-hoc Committee’s interim report did not criticise the National Assembly’s work, impugn the integrity of its legislative processes, or implicate, in any way, the institution of culpability in the shocking alterations after the laws has been passed. Rather, the report’s factual content highlighted the concerning attempt by perpetrators of the illegal alterations to undermine the Legislature’s functional integrity and independence. This should be a concern for legislators who prioritise law-making in the public interest over transient political considerations.
  1. It should be noted that while

the Minority Caucus of the House of Representatives established a Committee for an independent fact-finding exercise, consistent with parliamentary best practices,  the House leadership had earlier constituted another Committee, chaired by Rt.Hon. Muktar Aliyu Betara, with a similar mandate to review the Tax Acts as passed by the House and the purported gazetted version, with the aim to identify discrepancies and verify the accuracy of the gazetted version. This raises the question: if, as Hon. Agbase claims, that the alleged alterations in the Tax Reforms Acts has been overtaken by events following the release of the Certified True Copies (CTCs), why is the Betara Committee still sitting and has not been dissolved by the House?

  1. It is striking that Hon. Agbese’s statement asserts that “The concerns raised regarding discrepancies in the tax laws have already been comprehensively addressed by the House leadership. With the release of the Certified True Copies of the Acts, there is now clarity…” However, the only clarity, I must say, is that the irrefutable findings of the Minority Caucus Ad-hoc Committee’s interim report reveal that external actors within government bureaucracy have flagrantly undermined the National Assembly’s constitutional authority to legislate, compromising the integrity of key legislative documents and causing embarrassment to the institution and the nation.

Speaking in the manner that Agbase has spoken will only continue to enable such unacceptable behavior that ought to attract the collective upbraid of all lawmakers irrespective of partisan divide.

  1. Does Hon. Agbese’s assertion that the affront to the National Assembly’s independence has been “comprehensively addressed” suggest that the institution is acquiescing to this development and will not pursue accountability for this significant procedural anomaly, which undermines the Assembly’s authority? Democratic institutions are strengthened when accountability is upheld, not when official malfeasance is overlooked. I trust, however, that the National Assembly’s leadership, with a nationalist Speaker Abbas Tajudeen on the driving seat, will continue to uphold the Legislature’s independence and protect the public interest.

“If ADC Gives Atiku Ticket, It Means It Doesn’t Think South Should Retain Power” – Minister Musawa

0
Hannatu Musawa - Honourable Minister for Art and Culture and Tourism

By Adesina Soyooye

“Fielding Obi as Presidential candidate is the fastest way for the opposition to lose in 2027” – Tinubu’s Minister

Hannatu Musawa, the Honourable Minister for Art, Culture and Tourism, has written off both the 2023 Presidential Candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and that of  Labour Party, Peter Obi, a former Governor of Anambra State, as no threat, at all, to the re-election bid of President Bola Tinubu in 2027. Both Atiku and Obi are chieftains of the African Democratic Congress, ADC.

While she said she respects Atiku, she noted Atiku is no march for Tinubu. But importantly, she argued that if the  ADC gives Atiku, a Northerner, the ticket, it only means that the Party does not believe the South is capable of occupying Nigeria’s top job.

Tinubu, a Southerner, succeeded late President Muhammadu Buhari, a Northerner, after eight years in office. But Obi, is of the South and is also aspiring to the Presidential seat, currently occupied by Tinubu.

Problem is Minister Musawa does not think much of Obi’s strength if he runs. To her,  fielding Obi should be a no-no for the ADC because it is the fastest way for the Party to lose the election.

The Minister expressed these views when she spoke with Seun Okinbaloye on the current edition of Mic One Podcast.

She said: “I don’t think Atiku is a march for Tinubu but he is a formidable opponent. Atiku, as much as I admire him as a patriot, I don’t think he is a march for Tinubu.”

She is, also, of the opinion that if the former Vice President becomes ADC’s candidate, it shows that it doesn’t recognize that it is okay for the South to remain in power.

She said: “And if it’s Atiku on that ticket, it means the ADC doesn’t recognize that the South should retain power.

On Obi flying the ADC Presidential ticket, Musawa said that is the fastest way for the opposition to lose the election.

Her words: “If Peter Obi is on the ticket as the Presidential Candidate, that is the fastest way the opposition is going to lose this election. I promise you.”

The trio of Tinubu, Atiku and Obi contested for the Presidential race in 2023. It was a close race as the three of them outrightly won the same number of States. But Tinubu carried the day not only because he had more spread than Atiku and Obi, he also had more number of votes, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
