Breaking: South African Apartheid Activist, Desmond Tutu Is Dead

0

By James Orji

Archbishop Desmond Tutu, South African Bishop, is dead. The demise of the apartheid activist was announced by the Bishop of Johannesburg, Stephen Moreo, via his official Twitter handle on Wednesday.

“ATTENTION. The Anglican Diocese of Johannesburg receives now the sad news of the death of our dearest Archbishop Desmond Tutu.” He was 90 years old.

Tutu was renowned for his work as an anti-apartheid and human rights activist. Between 1985 to 1986 he was the Bishop of Johannesburg from and then the Archbishop of Cape Town from 1986 to 1996. He was the first black African to hold both positions.

According to Wikipedia, Tutu was born of mixed Xhosa and Motswana heritage to a poor family in Klerksdorp, South Africa. Entering adulthood, he trained as a teacher and married Nomalizo Leah Tutu, with whom he had several children. In 1960, he was ordained as an Anglican priest and in 1962 moved to the United Kingdom to study theology at King’s College London.

In 1966 he returned to southern Africa, teaching at the Federal Theological Seminary and then the University of Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland. In 1972, he became the Theological Education Fund’s director for Africa, a position based in London but necessitating regular tours of the African continent. Back in southern Africa in 1975, he served first as dean of St Mary’s Cathedral in Johannesburg and then as Bishop of Lesotho; from 1978 to 1985 he was general-secretary of the South African Council of Churches. He emerged as one of the most prominent opponents of South Africa’s apartheid system of racial segregation and white minority rule. Although warning the National Party government that anger at apartheid would lead to racial violence, as an activist he stressed non-violent protest and foreign economic pressure to bring about universal suffrage.

In 1985, Tutu became Bishop of Johannesburg and in 1986 the Archbishop of Cape Town, the most senior position in southern Africa’s Anglican hierarchy. In this position he emphasised a consensus-building model of leadership and oversaw the introduction of female priests.

Also in 1986, he became president of the All Africa Conference of Churches, resulting in further tours of the continent. After President F. W. de Klerk released the anti-apartheid activist Nelson Mandela from prison in 1990 and the pair led negotiations to end apartheid and introduce multi-racial democracy, Tutu assisted as a mediator between rival black factions. After the 1994 general election resulted in a coalition government headed by Mandela, the latter selected Tutu to chair the Truth and Reconciliation Commission to investigate past human rights abuses committed by both pro and anti-apartheid groups. Since apartheid’s fall, Tutu has campaigned for gay rights and spoken out on a wide range of subjects, among them the Israeli–Palestinian conflict, his opposition to the Iraq War, and his criticism of South African presidents Thabo Mbeki and Jacob Zuma. In 2010, he retired from public life.

He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984.

OPINION: The Spirit of October

0
Lagos EndSARS Protesters

By Sully Abu

A year ago, our benighted and long suffering country saw a rude awakening. A place where our today is almost always guaranteed to be worse than the day before enjoyed a brief moment of that commodity that appeared to have long taken leave of this land: hope.

What began as a campaign to draw attention to police brutality and especially the unspeakable atrocities of a particular unit that was designed to adopt a muscular approach to law enforcement soon turned to a spirited protest against the ills of society and their perceived perpetrators.

Thanks to the long familiar deaf and dumb approach to matters of governance, the revolt quickly became an insurrection. The rallying proclamation may have been ‘ EndSars!’ But that was a metaphor for an end to an ancien regime that has made a once bright and promising  country a land of no hope, a laughing stock not just in the wider world but also in Africa where we are held in derision even by our puny neighbours.

October 20 2020 marked the rejection of a state of affairs to which many had become resigned: a country which in spite of its rich endowments has simply and stubbornly refused to work and has become a place of no consequence when it comes to contributing anything positive to the world. Even when  it came to matters of negative concern – kidnapping particularly of school children, unremitting flow of blood, fraud and corruption – the evidence  is that the world had  begun to tire of Nigeria with other countries raising concern only when we appear to pose a clear and present danger to their own interests and citizens.

It was for these reasons and more that the EndSars protests struck such a chord not just in Nigeria but around the world with many international figures paying particular attention to the trajectory of events. Within the country, the boldness and imagination of the youth, their organisation, their patriotism, their all-embracing message including sympathy for the living and working conditions of policemen, put in bold relief the absolutely disgraceful state of the wider society and the utter, irredeemable bankruptcy of its so-called leaders, whether in situ or aspiring.

Even those who had given up hope that anything good would ever come out of Nigeria momentarily suspended their disbelief. And support for the protesters came from far and wide. Food, drinks, recharge cards appeared from no where. Perfect strangers became bonded by what seemed the sacredness of their common mission.

The sense of comradeship and camaraderie  especially when the mindless shooting began, with okada riders and motorists ferrying the injured and the fallen to nearby private hospitals and clinics which threw their emergency services open, was  the stuff of legend, evoking the spirit of shared humanity which the brutality of our daily existence had seemed to banish far from these shores.

Lagos was the epicenter of events but their remit was nation wide. The dimensions it took in many other places – looting of food stores and arson – became the narrative  those in authority chose to emphasize, providing the excuse for a bloody  crackdown. In the process they missed the point. What could have provided an occasion for a deep and agonising appraisal of where we are and why was merchandised as a protest with ethnic or regional motivation – or even a move to overthrow the government. One prominent figure who has since become a bandit- negotiator claimed ownership of the very man who is supposed to be president of the entire country, insisting they were going to rise in defence of “our Buhari”.

For the protesters, Buhari was theirs as well. As they wrapped themselves  in the national flag, the resplendent  colours of green- white – green and singing the national anthem  a number of them were captured on TV and social media saying all they wanted was for “President Buhari to address us.” We know how their plaintive  cries were met.

Like the opportunities for a national re-birth presented by June 12 and in a lesser respect the tenure of Gen Murtala Muhammed, the EndSars episode risks becoming another lost opportunity. Ever since that episode the degeneration in  nearly every aspect of national life  – from security of lives and persons to the Zimbabwenization of the economy and currency such that Nigeria today carries the can in nearly every index of human development  –  has been mind-boggling.

Yet there are people running all over the place saying they want to be president or governor in 2023. President of this wreckage? Governor of where? Is any of them thinking of the enormity of the task of fixing this place? Is anyone promoting a national conversation about saving us from an abyss above which we are barely hanging?

The consolation is that spirits, we are told, do not die. In spite of the brutality with which legitimate protesters of the national condition continue to be met, the wounded spirit of the EndSars protests will not be assuaged until Nigeria does a much needed, almost belated reckoning of what it is and what it wants to be.

Bola Tinubu and Pa Adebanjo

By Akinwale Kasali

The Bourdillion, Ikoyi Lagos abode of the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has become a Mecca of sort for politicians, allies and well wishers, just like when he was in the United Kingdom for medicals.

Surprisingly, one of his greatest critics, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, the leader of Afenifere, a Pan Yoruba Group, visited the former Lagos state Governor at his Ikoyi residence on Tuesday.

Tinubu received Pa Adebanjo, his daughter, Shade, Chief Supo Sonibare, Oba Olaitan Oladipo and retired Assistant Inspector General of Police Tunji Alapini, during their visit.

The visit came as a surprise to political observers who had watched keenly from the sidelines how the Afenifere leadership continually criticized Tinubu and his romance with President Muhammadu Buhari to actualize his 2023 Presidential ambition.

Pa Adebanjo had accused Tinubu of being silent on the herdsmen crisis because he thinks President Buhari  will make him his successor.

Adebanjo  had advised Tinubu and other APC members from the South-West to leave the party in the interest of Yorubaland.

It was gathered from  sources and aides close to Pa Adebanjo, that the essence of the visit was to check on him (Tinubu) and know how he is fairing having just returned from a medical trip to UK.

The source added that the last time Tinubu and Pa Adebanjo met was in April during the burial of the former Publicity Secretary of Afenifere, Yinka Odumakin.

…Legit.ng Reporter Arrested

By Akinwale Kasali

Inspite of  warnings by the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Hakeem Odumosu that the Command would not tolerate any gathering or protest of any form, protesters  remained defiant, and stormed the Lekki Toll Gate in memory of the #EndSARS campaign against Police brutality, extra judicial killings, extortion and abuse of fundamental human rights of citizens.

The protesters moving in a vehicular procession defied the heavy presence of Police and went ahead with the planned two-hour protest, forcing the Police to effect the arrest of some of them.

They were confined in a stationed Black Maria Vehicle.

It was gathered that a journalist of Legit.ng, an online media platform was also arrested by security operatives at the Lekki toll gate.

The phones, gadgets and other equipments of the said journalist were confiscated.

Odumosu had warned organizers and youths planning to stage a protest at the Lekki tollgate on Wednesday (today) to have a rethink and shelve the protests.

But the young Nigerians, under the aegis of #EndSARS memorial vowed to defy the order.

It would be recalled that Folarin Falana, AKA Falz, a well-known Nigerian rapper, and son of Human Rights Activist and Constitutional Lawyer, Femi Falana, had stated that Nigerian youngsters will not be hushed by anyone.

For defying its warnings, the security operatives began a show of force in response to the #ENDSARS Memorial Protest.

Over 20 Police Vehicles with heavily armed personnel are currently positioned at the tollgate in a bid to prevent any gathering of protesters.

Cargo Containers Movement By Rail Resumes At Lagos Ports

By Tosin Olatokunbo

The Managing Director of Inland Containers Nigeria Limited, ICNL, Ismail Yusuf has disclosed that the Nigerian Railway Corporation, NRC has resumed the movement of cargo containers from the ports to the Kano and Kaduna Inland Dry port.

NRC suspended the movement of containers by rail from Apapa ports last year for rehabilitation of the railway tracks.

Yusuf, however, told journalist in Lagos that close to 40 containers have been moved so far, adding that an additional 40 empty containers have been returned through same mode to Lagos from the Kano and Kaduna Dry Port, which is a subsidiary company of ICNL

According to him “As you know that Federal Government is encouraging the Nigerian Railway Corporation to ensure movement of cargo from the sea port to the hinterland and this is very critical to our Kano bonded terminal and Kaduna Inland Dry Port, which is our subsidiary company

“The management of ICNL and Kaduna Dry Port has led the management of the railway corporation to discuss the modalities of how they can come back to life. We thank God that our request has been acceded to and this is the outcome of our discussion

“Presently, they have supplied us with two rails for the last two weeks. We have moved about 40 containers, and this will continue every fortnight until we attain maximum capacity.

“The number of containers being moved also depends on availability of locomotives, and as long as we have enough cargo to load. We have started from somewhere: from one to two rails, and from there we can increase it to four or five rails.

“We are talking with NRC on how we can increase the capacity to meet the yearnings of customers who want to use the services of the rail corporation. Time spent on the movement is a minimum of 48 hours and maximum of 72,” Yusuf said.

Nnamdi Kanu: South-east Traditional Rulers To Attend Trial; Ebonyi State Exempted

By Charles Igbo

A delegation of Traditional Rulers from the South-east Traditional Council, will be at the trial of the Leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, in Abuja, on Thursday, October 21, to watch the proceedings.

This was contained in a release signed by the  Chairmen of the Traditional Rulers in the Zone after a meeting on Tuesday, October 19, 2021. Those who signed were:

*HRH, Joseph Nwabeke, Abia State.

* HRH, L.O.C. Agubuzu, Enugu.

*HRM, Nnaemeka Achebe, Anambra.

*HRH, E.C. Okeke, Imo.

It is not known why the Chairman of the Ebonyi State Traditional Rulers Council did not sign, but the Governor of Ebonyi State, Dave Umahi, was reported recently, to have, allegedly, said that “Ebonyi State is not part of Biafra”.

Said the Traditional Rulers: “As a father would do for his  child in difficulty, we will send a delegation to attend the Court hearing in Abuja on 21, October, 2021, when Nnamdi Kanu would be arraigned.”

The Traditional Rulers, also, asked President Muhammadu Buhari to de-proscribe IPOB and cause Kanu to be released from custody.

The FG proscribed IPOB in 2017, and termed it a terrorist organization, a tag it has refused to place on murderous bandits operating in the North.

However, the Traditional Rulers, decrying the militarization of the Zone, urged “IPOB and its affiliate units and other protest groups in Alaigbo, to immediately stop all provocative rhetoric and actions that tend to promote violence, fear, or other unlawful acts by their affiliates, sympathisers, and miscreants, in the name of such organizations.”

For the records, on same Tuesday, gunmen stormed a meeting of about 20 Traditional Rulers at the Headquarters of Njaba, Orlu, Imo State, opened fire on them, killing two of the Traditional Rulers on the spot, and injuring many others.

IPOB: Kanu Warns Against Harassment Of His Legal Team

0

By Gideon Njoku

The Leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has warned all those harassing, or thinking of harassing members, or any member of his legal team to back off or face his wrath. He said he would never forgive anybody – IPOB members, associates, friends or family – who engage in either harassing or bullying or running down members of his Legal team.

Kanu’s message was passed through his Lead Counsel, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, on Monday, October 18, 2021, when he paid a routine visit to Kanu at his detention centre in Abuja, along with Kanu’s internationally exposed Special Counsel, Alloy Ejimakor.

In an update after the visit, Ejiofor said Kanu was okay, and confidently looking forward to Thursday, October 21, his day in Court.

It is not known why Kanu warned against the harassment of members of his legal team, but weeks ago, some overzealous, alleged, members of IPOB had accused the team of double dealing.

But Kanu full of commendation for the Legal team, says he trusts them absolutely, and has declared anybody who harasses them an enemy for life.

Following, according to Barrister Ejiofor, are what Kanu, who they call Onyendu, told them.

*”Onyendu made it categorically clear that none of his lawyers should be harassed, threatened or accused by anybody claiming to be his supporter or follower, regardless of the person’s tie with him. He was very particular about those who find it convenient to insult his Attorneys vide their live social media platforms.

“Our Client Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu emphasized that he trusts his lawyers and continues to have high confidence in them.

*That anybody engaged in such harassment, threats and unfounded accusations directed against his lawyers, is definitely working against him, and that he shall never forgive such person(s) and shall  eternally see such person(s) as his enemy.

*”That the best thing anybody claiming to be his supporter or follower can do for him at this point in time is to wholeheartedly support all his lawyers in their current efforts.

*That any such threats, harassment and false accusations against any of his lawyers should seize forthwith.”

Kanu is billed to appear at an FCT Abuja Federal Court on Thursday, October 21. He is being prosecuted by the Federal Government, which has just amended some of the charges, on sundry issues, including treasonable felony and terrorism.

IPOB has declared a sit-at-home order in the South-east on that day, and has decided to inflict a one month sit-at-home order in the Zone if Kanu does not appear in Court on that day.

At the last adjourned day, Kanu was not brought to Court due to what was called “logistics reasons.”

Tragedy In Imo: Unknown Gunmen Shoot, Kill Traditional Rulers

Unknown Gunmen

By Charles Igbo

An unprecedented tragedy struck Imo State, Tuesday, October 19. A gang of gunmen barged into a meeting of Traditional Rulers, shot and killed at least two of them, and injured many others.

The injured are in the hospital.

Eye witness accounts said the Traditional Rulers, numbering about 20, were holding a meeting at the Headquarters of Njaba Local Government Area when the gunmen stormed the venue and first started shooting sporadically, before pointedly shooting at the scared and scampering Traditional Rulers.

When the shooting stopped, two of them were sprawled on the floor, dead in the pool of their own blood.

The two Traditional Rulers were identified as those of Okwudor and Ihebinowerre.

A source who pleaded anonymity described the incident as an “abomination”. Another said:

“This is the lowest the Igbo have descended to. For youths to storm a gathering of Traditional Rulers with guns, shoot at them, and kill them is the limit. The Igbo has become a cursed race. The land needs cleansing.”

The South-east has been battling with  a worsening insecurity situation in the past many months. At a time, Imo State was the worst hit, until Anambra took over.

It has been a bit quiet in the Imo for sometime now until this unprecedented incident.

It is not known, yet, why the gunmen stormed the venue of the meeting, or the number of injured Traditional Rulers, but the State Police Command has confirmed the tragedy.

Finally, FG Scraps DPR, PPPRA and PEF

Muhammadu Buhari

By Uche Mbah

President Muhammadu Buhari has, finally, scraped three subsidiaries of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, in line with the new Petroleum Law.

Under the new Petroleum Industry Act, enacted by the National Assembly last August, the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA), and the Petroleum Equalisation Fund (PEF) cease to exist.

They were, however, merged into two new groups-the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, NPRA, and the Nigerian Upstream Regulatory Commission, NURC.

The two new departments have been inaugurated in Abuja Monday by the Minister of state for Petroleum, Timipre Sylva.

However, staff of the old agencies will be absorbed in the new agencies.

“The law states that all the assets and even the staff of the DPR are to be invested on the Commission and also in the authority. So that means the DPR doesn’t exist anymore,” Mr Sylva told Journalists.

“And, of course, the law specifically repeals the DPR Act, the Petroleum Inspectorate Act, the Petroleum Equalisation Fund Act and the PPPRA Act. The law specifically repeals them. It is very clear that those agencies do not exist anymore.

“The law also provides for the staff and the jobs in those agencies to be protected. But I’m sure that that doesn’t cover, unfortunately, the chief executives, who were on political appointments…

“The authority has its staff coming from the defunct PEF, PPPRA and DPR. The commission has staff coming over from DPR and the process is going on for the next few weeks.

“So far, the chief executives of these agencies have not been in place, but of course, Mr President in his wisdom made the appointment a few weeks ago and they went through a rigorous process of confirmation at the National Assembly.

“The agencies have now taken off because they now have clear leadership and today’s event marks the beginning for the new agencies,” he said.

He said that with the passage of the PIA into law, investors can now confidently invest in Nigeria’s oil sector.

“Today, the PIA has clarified the legal framework around the sector and the agencies are now in place. So I don’t see anything now stopping investors from coming,” he said.
