Governor Abba Yusuf joins APC

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The Kano State Governor Abba Kabiru Yusuf on Monday, January 26, 2026, formally rejoined the All Progressive Congress, APC.

The defection of the Governor was preceded by his resignation from the New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, on Friday January 23 ,2023, amidst tension and disagreements with his erstwhile political godfather Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

Speaking during the event which held at the Coronation Hall, Government House Kano, Governor Yusuf informed that his decision to rejoin forces with the ruling party at the centre was primarily driven by the quest to align Kano with the Federal Government with a view to fast-tracking development in the State.

Present at the brief and low keyed programme were the immediate past National Chairman of the APC ,and Governor Yusuf’s immediate predecessor in office, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, Minister of State for Housing ,and Urban Development Yusuf Atah, the Kano State Chairman of the APC Prince Abdullahi Abbas, State and National Assembly Members and host of others.

Earlier Governor Yusuf had on Friday, appreciated former party, the NNPP for the opportunity provided for him to realize his ambition.

In his letter of resignation from the NNPP the Governor cited the festering leadership and internal crises bedeviling the party as one of the reasons why he was looking for pastures elsewhere.

“I remain sincerely appreciative of the opportunity given to me by the party ( NNPP), its leadership and members across Kano State to be part of its political journey since 2022, as well as the support, goodwill and cooperation extended to me during my time in the party.

“In recent times, the party has been confronted with persistent internal challenges arising from leadership disagreements and ongoing legal proceedings, many of which are presently before the courts for judicial determination .

“The growing disenchantment among party members has created deep divisions within the party’s structure, resulting in cracks that appear increasingly irreconcilable and have generated uncertainty at both state and national levels.

“After careful reflection and without prejudice to the party’s capacity to resolve its internal challenges, I have come to the conclusion that my resignation is in the best interest of the people of Kano state”. Gov Yusuf stated.

Major General Samaila Uba

By Akinwale Kasali

The Defence Headquarters, DHQ, on Monday, finally, confirmed there was a plot to overthrow the Government of President Bola Tinubu. Before now, the DHQ had vehemently denied there was any such plot when it became public that 16 Military Officers had been arrested and were in custody over the alleged plot.

In deed, when the October 1 Independence parade was suddenly cancelled, not a few people attributed it to the aborted plot as speculations were that, perhaps, it could have been carried out that day, possibly, beginning from the parade ground.

However, in accepting that there was such a plot, DHQ, in a statement said it would  set up a Special Investigative Panel over the alleged aborted coup plot.

The  16 Officers involved would be charged for indiscipline, and acts contrary to service regulations, and other breaches.

The DHQ added that the Officers will face a Military Court Martial.

Major General Samaila Uba, Director of Defence Information, made this disclosure  in a statement in Abuja, the nation’s Capital.

In October 2025, the DHQ had announced the arrest of the officers who have since been under  investigations which has  now been completed in line with established military procedures and extant regulations.

Major Gen Uba said the investigation examined all circumstances surrounding the conduct of the affected personnel and identified a number of officers with cases to answer, including allegations bordering on plotting to overthrow the government.

He said such actions were inconsistent with the ethics, values and professional standards expected of members of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

He emphasised that the measures being taken were “purely disciplinary and part of internal institutional mechanisms to preserve discipline, cohesion and operational effectiveness within the ranks”.

He reaffirmed “the commitment of the Armed Forces to professionalism, loyalty and respect for constitutional authority, assuring the public that due process and fairness would be strictly observed throughout the proceedings”.

The detained officers include a Brigadier-General, a Colonel, four Lieutenant Colonels, five Majors, two Captains, a Lieutenant, a Lieutenant Commander from the Nigerian Navy and a Squadron Leader from the Nigerian Air Force.

Their names were given as:

  • Brigadier General Musa Abubakar Sadiq (Nasarawa, 44th Regular Course)
  • Colonel M.A. Ma’aji (Niger, 47th Course)
  • Lt Col S. Bappah (Bauchi, 56th Course)
  • Lt Col A.A. Hayatu (Kaduna, 56th Course)
  • Lt Col Dangnan (Plateau, 56th Course)
  • Lt Col M. Almakura (Nasarawa, 56th Course)

□Major A.J. Ibrahim (Gombe, 56th Course)

  • Major M.M. Jiddah (Katsina, 56th Course)
  • Major M.A. Usman (FCT, 60th Course)
  • Major D. Yusuf (Gombe, 59th Course)
  • Major I. Dauda (Jigawa, DSSC 38)
  • Captain I. Bello (DSSC 43)
  • Captain A.A. Yusuf
  • Lieutenant S.S. Felix (DSSC)
  • Lieutenant Commander D.B. Abdullahi (Navy)
  • Squadron Leader S.B. Adamu (Air Force)

It is gathered that most of the officers belong to the Infantry Corps, Signals Corps, and Ordnance Corps.

OPINION: Makoko and the Question We Keep Avoiding

0
Elizabeth Jibunoh and Babajide Sanwoolu

By Elizabeth Jibunoh

“This moment asks something of all of us not outrage alone, but reflection. What kind of city are we building if the most vulnerable must always pay the price of modernisation?.”

The demolition of parts of Makoko in late December and early January has left me deeply unsettled not only by what happened, but by how easily society has moved on.

Makoko has been discussed largely in the language of illegality, urban planning, and waterfront safety. But when we reduce a human settlement to a planning problem, something vital is lost. Families become structures. Livelihoods become inconveniences. History becomes expendable.

I find myself asking: when did development become more important than dignity?

Yes, cities must grow. Yes, governments must plan. But progress that begins by erasing the poor without humane alternatives is not progress it is displacement dressed up as order. When thousands lose their homes overnight without clear resettlement, compensation, or voice, we are no longer talking about policy alone; we are talking about conscience.

Much has been said by the Lagos State Government about safety and infrastructure. What has been said far less is how people are expected to survive after the dust settles. The fisherman whose livelihood depended on those waters. I have sourced my fresh fish for years from the Makoko market. I smoke my fish there as well in a well defined and well built facility provided by Lagos state government.

What about The mother whose children no longer know where “home” is. The elderly who have lived there for decades and suddenly became invisible.

Makoko is not an abstract slum. It is a living community with memory, culture, and social order. When society accepts its demolition without insisting on humane transitions, we quietly endorse the idea that some lives are more expendable than others.

This moment asks something of all of us not outrage alone, but reflection.

What kind of city are we building if the most vulnerable must always pay the price of modernisation?

What does it say about us when we normalise dispossession as a tool of governance?

Development should not numb our humanity.

Urban renewal should not require moral amnesia.

Makoko is not just about housing. It is about whether we still recognise the poor as stakeholders in our collective future or merely as obstacles to be cleared.

If society loses its ability to be disturbed by this, then we are not just demolishing communities. We are slowly demolishing our shared conscience.

CNPP, Civil Society Urge Tinubu to Act On Rivers Political Turmoil, Say Crisis Is National Emergency

0
CNPP Joint Press Briefing

The Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) and the Coalition of National Civil Society Organisations (CNCSOs) have placed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the centre of efforts to resolve the escalating political crisis in Rivers State, warning that the situation now constitutes a “national democratic emergency” requiring urgent presidential intervention.

At a joint press conference read by Baba Abubakar El-Nafaty, Chairman of the Elders Forum of the CNCSOs, the groups said President Tinubu has both the constitutional authority and moral responsibility to halt what they described as a dangerous political trajectory capable of undermining national peace and Nigeria’s still-consolidating democracy.

“Mr President, this is no longer just a Rivers State issue. It is a national democratic emergency,” the organisations declared, stressing that what is unfolding in the state “goes far beyond local politics” and represents “a critical test of Nigeria’s commitment to constitutional governance, separation of powers, and democratic stability.”

The CNPP and CNCSOs warned that failure by the President to act decisively could legitimise what they termed “legislative anarchy” and embolden similar crises across the federation. According to them, “failure to act now risks legitimising legislative anarchy and encouraging similar crises across other states, with dire consequences for national unity and peace.”

They described the Rivers situation as a deliberate political project rather than a governance issue, insisting that Governor Siminalayi Fubara has not committed any constitutional offence warranting impeachment. “Let us be clear,” they said, “Governor Siminalayi Fubara has not committed any act that meets the constitutional threshold for impeachment under Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution, as amended. There is no credible allegation of gross misconduct, no paralysis of governance, and no popular uprising demanding his removal.”

According to the groups, the ongoing impeachment threats reflect “the weaponisation of a State House of Assembly as an instrument of political conquest rather than a guardian of democracy,” a development they warned is “not only reckless; it is extremely dangerous to Nigeria’s national peace.”

They cautioned President Tinubu that if the Rivers State model is allowed to persist, Nigeria could slide into a destabilising era where legislatures are used to unseat elected governors for political and financial control. “If the Rivers State template is allowed to stand,” they warned, “then Nigeria risks sliding into a future where state assemblies across the country become battlegrounds for elite power struggles.” They further asked pointedly: “If every governor becomes vulnerable to impeachment at the whim of external political forces, where then is the sovereignty of the people? Where does democratic stability reside?”

The CNPP and CNCSOs also drew the President’s attention to allegations of conditional political settlements linked to the crisis. They cited claims by loyalists of Governor Fubara that the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, imposed conditions on the governor in exchange for halting impeachment proceedings. “Chief among these alleged conditions,” they said, “was the immediate ratification of a commissioner list reportedly submitted by the FCT Minister upon Governor Fubara’s return to office.”

“These allegations,” the groups added, “strongly suggest that the crisis is not about governance or accountability but about control—control of federal allocations, control of internally generated revenue, and control of political power in Rivers State.” They warned that such claims “strike at the heart of democratic governance and must not be ignored by the Nigerian state.”

On financial matters, the organisations appealed to President Tinubu to order a thorough probe into funds received and expended during the six-month emergency rule in Rivers State. They disclosed that the state “reportedly received no less than ₦254.37 billion from the Federation Account Allocation Committee between March and August 2025,” averaging about ₦42.40 billion monthly. They alleged that despite a probe announced by the House of Assembly, there were “strong indications” that the exercise was “merely cosmetic.”

More troubling, they claimed that “state resources were shared during the emergency rule, with lawmakers loyal to the FCT Minister allegedly receiving as much as ₦350 million each from funds exceeding ₦360 billion left behind by the suspended Governor.” If true, they said, this would amount to “a betrayal of public trust on a scale that demands urgent national attention.”

Framing their appeal directly to the President, the CNPP and CNCSOs said: “As President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and leader of the APC, you have both the constitutional authority and moral responsibility to halt this dangerous slide.” They emphasised that Nigeria “cannot consolidate democracy while tolerating legislative blackmail, political extortion, and institutional sabotage.”

Among their key demands to the President are the immediate termination of all impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara, an independent investigation into the conduct of the Rivers State House of Assembly, a presidentially ordered probe into allegations of conditional political settlements, and a comprehensive forensic audit of all funds received and expended during the emergency rule.

In a strong concluding warning directed at the Presidency, the groups stated that “impeachment without just cause is political banditry” and that the continued weaponisation of legislative institutions is “a direct threat to Nigeria’s democracy and national peace.”

They urged President Tinubu to act swiftly to prevent a dangerous national precedent, declaring: “Governor Siminalayi Fubara must be allowed to govern. Rivers State must be allowed to breathe. Nigeria’s democracy must be protected.”

“Enough is enough,” they concluded. “Let the Governor govern. Let Rivers State develop. Let Nigeria’s democracy survive.”

Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso resigned

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

As widely expected, Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso , Kano State  Commissioner for Youth and Sports, a son of the leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, on Monday, January 26, 2026, resigned his appointment from the cabinet of Governor Abba Kabiru Yusuf.

The resignation of the younger Kwankwaso is a direct fallout from the resignation of Governor Yusuf from the New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, and his expected defection to the All Progressive Congress APC.

It came just a day after  Dr Yusuf Ibrahim Kofar Mata, the erstwhile Science and Technology Commissioner exited Governor Yusuf’s administration citing the deviation from the foundational ethos of the Government in the state as a major reason.

It will be recalled that Governor Yusuf, against strident opposition from his political godfather Senator Kwankwaso and members of the Kwankwasiyya movement, on Friday, January 23, 2026, formally announced his resignation from the NNPP the political party that brought him to power in 2023.

The Governor’s resignation which came a couple of days after meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Aso Rock Villa was preceded by serious political acrimony and disagreements between the camps of Kwankwaso and that of Governor Yusuf.

In a statement on Monday, Mustapha Kwankwaso while appreciating the Governor for the opportunity given him to serve the people of Kano, however noted that he was quiting with a heavy heart.

“It is with a heavy heart that I announce my resignation as Honourable Commissioner, Ministry of Youths and Sports Development, and member of the Kano state Executive Council.

“I want to express my deepest gratitude to Governor Abba Kabiru Yusuf for the opportunity to serve the great people of Kano state.

“I have cherished the experiences and lessons gained while serving ,and I appreciate the trust placed in me.

“As I resign, I pray the Youths of Kano State will continue to receive attention and support they deserve. I hope for the best for our sports development programmes and initiatives, and I am confident that they will flourish in the years to come” Mustapha Kwankwaso stated.

Ondo Leads Other States In Production Of Cannabis – NDLEA

0
Buba Marwa - NDLEA

By Ayodele Oni

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), has revealed that Ondo is the highest producer of cannabis among states in Nigeria.

Brigadier-General Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd.), NDLEA Chief executive attributed this to favourable climate and soil conditions.

Marwa also disclosed that about 15 million Nigerians aged between 15 and 64 use drugs, nearly three times the global average.

He made the disclosure on Monday during a courtesy visit with his delegation to Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, at the governor’s office in Akure.

Presenting comprehensive data on drug use prevalence, enforcement outcomes and cannabis production across the country, with particular emphasis on Ondo State, Marwa cited the 2018 United Nations drug use survey, stating that one in every seven Nigerians in the age bracket consumes drugs, describing the figure as unacceptably high.

According to the NDLEA chief, drug use prevalence in Ondo State stands at 17 per cent, translating to roughly 400,000 users.

He compared this with 33 per cent in Lagos State, about two million users and 24 per cent in Oyo State.

Providing operational figures, Marwa disclosed that in 2025 alone, the NDLEA command in Ondo State made 336 arrests, seized 22,316 kilogrammes of illicit substances, and secured 62 convictions.

He added that 207,000 kilogrammes of cannabis were seized and destroyed from farms and plantations across the state within the period.

The NDLEA chairman also revealed that the agency’s counselling and rehabilitation centre in Ondo State treated 243 drug users last year.

Marwa added that the NDLEA has commissioned the Nigerian Academy of Science to conduct a scientific study on cannabis-extracted oil for medicinal purposes, stressing that any decision on controlled cultivation and export would be strictly evidence-based.

The NDLEA boss said the agency established an Alternative Development Unit at its headquarters to complement law enforcement by engaging cannabis-growing communities to switch from illicit cultivation to legal crops.

The strategy involves community development, provision of farm inputs, infrastructure, schools, clinics and access to markets to ensure sustainable livelihoods, adding that Ondo State has been selected for a pilot study of the programme following a year of engagement with cannabis-producing communities.

Marwa also highlighted the Ondo State Government’s backing, including the creation of a State Drug Control Committee, with plans to extend it to local government areas, as well as provision of financial and operational support for the command.

Responding, Governor Aiyedatiwa pledged the full support of his administration to the NDLEA following the launch of the agency’s Alternative Development Programme in Ondo State.

He commended Marwa for personally leading the programme rather than delegating it, describing the move as a demonstration of commitment to curbing illicit drug cultivation, production, trafficking, and consumption.

He praised the NDLEA for complementing enforcement with the initiative, which would provide farmers with alternative livelihoods.

The Governor thanked the agency for selecting Ondo State as the pilot for the programme, noting statistics showing the state as the largest producer of cannabis in Nigeria.

He added that Ondo is also a major producer of legitimate agricultural products, such as cocoa, due to its vast forests, fertile soil and favourable climate.

Governor Aiyedatiwa assured the NDLEA of government support, recalling past assistance with vehicles and logistics to aid enforcement.

He welcomed the suggestion to establish an Alternative Development Unit in the state, noting it could be placed under the governor’s office in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and relevant advisers.

The Governor highlighted existing initiatives, including the “Youth on Ridges” programme, where over 5,000 hectares were cleared for cocoa cultivation to promote agriculture and job creation and the state’s “tomato revolution,” which now accounts for about 40 percent of Lagos market tomatoes.

Recruitment Of 50,000 Police Constables: Over 400,000 Applications Received, Deadline Extended

Nigerian Police

The Police Service Commission (PSC) and Nigeria Police Force (NPF) announce a two-week extension for the ongoing recruitment of 50,000 Constables. The application portal which opened on 15th December, 2025 has now been extended to close on 8th February, 2026.

This decision follows the receipt of over 400,000 applications and a review showing significant disparities in state participation. While some states like Adamawa, Benue, and Kaduna have high application numbers, states such as Lagos, Ogun, Bayelsa, Ebonyi, and Anambra have notably lower submissions.

The extension aims to ensure equitable representation nationwide. All eligible Nigerians, particularly from above-mentioned states with fewer applications, are strongly encouraged to apply via the official portal: www.npfapplication.psc.gov.ng.

State Governments, Local Government Councils, sociocultural organizations, religious bodies, community leaders, and other stakeholders are strongly encouraged to mobilize and sensitize eligible citizens within their jurisdictions to apply before the new deadline.

The PSC and NPF reaffirm their commitment to a fair and transparent recruitment process.

Sit-at-home: Gov Soludo Shuts Down Onitsha Main Market

0
Charles Soludo - Governor of Anambra State

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The Anambra State Governor, Prof Chukwuma  Soludo, on Monday January 26, 2026, ordered the immediate closure of the Onitsha Main Market

The closure order which is for an initial one week, may be extended if the traders continue not to comply with the directive to shun the every-Monday sit-at-home order in the State.

The Source reports that Governor Soludo had, at the weekend, warned civil servants in particular not to observe the Monday sit-at-home order proclaimed by the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra IPOB to press home it’s demand for the release of its detained leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

The Anambra State Governor threatened to deduct the salaries of civil servants who refuse to heed the call to disregard the Monday sit-at-home order.

The State Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, while briefing the media on the directives noted that  beginning from February this year, civil servants salaries will be paid taking congizance of attendance on Mondays.

Governor Soludo who issued the directive for the closure of the market on Monday during an on-the- spot visit to the Main Market, warned that the State’s economic life cannot be yielded to  the activities of non-state actors.

According to him, the decision to close the Market is an indication that Government will no longer tolerate the lockdown of the economy of the state every Monday.

He expressed regrets and disappointment that the traders could still lock their shops and the market despite repeated assurances of enhanced security.

“The Government cannot stand by while a few individuals willfully undermine public safety and disregard official directives meant to restore normalcy . This is plain economic sabotage ,and it can no longer be tolerated..

“We are not going to allow the development to continue. The closure of the market is a protective measure for law abiding residents.

“You either decide that you are going to trade here or you go elsewhere . I am very serious about it- Gov Soludo stated.

The Source further reports that following the closure order, security agents were observed on Monday sealing all entry and exit points of the popular Market.
