In yet another raid, the Uyo  Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has swooped on suspected internet fraudsters  in Calabar, the Cross River State Capital, arresting 20 of them in a sting operation.

Probably because of its serene and peaceful nature, internet fraudsters, known in the local parlance as yahoo boys, have turned the Cross River state capital into their haven.

The suspects, he said, will be charged to court as soon as the investigation was completed.

Imo: Speaker Confirms Removal Of Deputy, Pledges Loyalty To Gov, Denies Bribery Allegation

Imo State

By Charles Igbo

The confusion over whether or not Hon Amara Chyna Iwuanyanwu was impeached  on Tuesday November 2, as the Deputy Speaker of the Imo House of Assembly is clearing. The Speaker, Rt Hon. Paul Emeziem confirms it as true.

News broke on Tuesday that he Iwuanyanwu had been impeached. But his supporters, especially those close to Government House, Owerri, dismiss the impeachment as “purported”. They dismiss it as a ruse, and say it was a failed attempt.

18 members of the Assembly, out of 27, endorsed a resolution to impeach him. Even though no reason was adduced for the action, Speaker Emeziem carried it out to the letter, allegedly, without putting it to vote, or confirming the signatures of those who signed the resolution to impeach him.

Iwuanyanwu is a fierce loyalist of Governor Hope Uzodimma. Side talks are that he was removed because of his alleged arrogance, high-handedness and over-ambition. But his supporters and associates of Governor Uzodimma allege that Speaker Emeziem was compromised  into engineering the impeachment. They say he bribed law makers to the tune of N10m each. They say he was given a whopping sum of $300,000 to carry out the “purported” impeachment, and that it is  targeted at the Governor who they, allegedly, plan to impeach after Iwuanyanwu. With Iwuanyanwu fondly called Mr Capacity, they say, nobody dared plan an impeachment of the Governor.

But Speaker Emeziem, confirming that, indeed, his deputy has been removed from office, denied inducing any Lawmakers with even a kobo. He said there was no such thing as bribery. He dismissed the allegation as mischievous. He said he had no choice but to carry out the resolution of the members who voted, in the majority, to impeach him.

In a statement signed on his behalf by his Chief Press Secretary, Collins Osuji, Speaker Emeziem pledged loyalty to the Governor and Government of the State, and urged members of the public to ignore the bribery story, dismissing it as laughable and an attempt to malign him.

Following is an excerpt from the statement:

“The attention of the office of the Speaker, Imo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Paul Emeziem has been drawn to the fictitious, malicious and baseless reports trending on some sections of the social media regarding the removal of the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Amara Chyna Iwuanyanwu.

“The Speaker, as the chief servant of the House, as required by ethics and law guiding the state Assembly, only made the pronouncement after acknowledging that the resolution received endorsement of the far majority of the House members.

“But against the ‘factuality’ of what transpired, the mischief makers, sponsored by known elements, have taken to social media platforms to ditch out lies aimed at maligning the personality and integrity of the Speaker and the other members of the House.

“Also, that the Speaker and the members were bought over by some known politicians in the state to carry out the decision and by extension destabilize the state government led by His Excellency, Dist. Sen. Hope Uzodinma was nowhere near the truth and should totally be disregarded.

“We, therefore, want to use this medium to appeal to the Imolites and the general public to treat the trending misleading and lies-infested reports with levity as they can only come from a power drunk or drowning person or persons.”

However, the State Government at a press conference addressed by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Declan Emelumba, confirmed plans to destabilize the State Government, and force a  declaration of a state of emergency in the State.

Ikoyi Collapsed Skyscraper: Tinubu Backs Suspension Of LASBCA GM

Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu

By Akinwale Kasali

All Progressives Congress, APC, National Leader and former Governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola  Tinubu has thrown his weight behind Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo Olu over the indefinite suspension of the General Manager of  Lagos State Building and Control Agency, Gbolahan Oki.

Tinubu, also, advocated for  stiffer sanctions on Regulatory Officials who are indicted over the unfortunate incident that has claimed the lives of, so far, 20 persons with several injured, while some are still trapped in the rubbles. Among the dead are a Youth Corper identified as Zainab as well as a female Personal  Assistant to the Developer. There is still confusion on the fate of the Developer.

Tinubu added that the Lagos State Government is in order  to order a probe  into what t led to the collapse of the 21-storey building on Gerard Road, Ikoyi, on Monday.

The APC stalwart said the Government must get to the bottom of the ghastly occurrence, while adding that he sought “not to prejudge anything or anyone”.

“It is obvious and plain to us all that something went terribly wrong. If indeed intentional or reckless wrongdoing has been committed, severe and appropriate sanctions should find those who have been found to have shirked their fundamental responsibilities. The departed, their grieving families and the people of Lagos deserve no less and should perhaps demand even more.”

He commiserated with the Lagos State Governor, the Government and people of Lagos State as well as families of the dead.

In statement by his Media Officer Tunde Rahman, Tinubu  said: “The collapse of a 21-storey building on Geraed Road in Ikoyi, Lagos is a sad and painful incident. Once more and all too often, we have suffered the loss of lives for no defensible reason. This tragedy should never have occurred.

“Workers at the site and, for that matter no one who is simply trying to work in order to care for their loved ones, should have their lives abbreviated in such a manner. No one should suffer what these people suffered. Nor should families have to hear such news and bear such a burden like this. As we pray that the souls of the deceased now rest in peace, human compassion requires us to do more. We must reach out to their families with both prayer and practical support and assistance during this terrible moment.

“I sympathise with those injured and I commend Lagos State Government for I know it will see to their immediate medical needs and provide whatever other assistance is required for them to survive the episode and return to a semblance of normalcy.

“The emergency responders are doing well and they require our support and encouragement for their task is hard and not without significant physical danger. We pray that others will be found alive and without significant injury. Search and rescue efforts must continue non-stop until they are able to bring out whoever is still trapped in the rubble.

“Some tragedies are unavoidable, but most are not. We need to understand what happened here so that we can work harder to prevent a reoccurrence. I endorse Governor Babajide Sanwo-olu’s order for an investigation into this tragedy. There are many questions to ask, and all those questions deserve full and public answers.

“We must get to the bottom of this ghastly occurrence. I seek not to prejudge anything or anyone, but it is obvious and plain to us all that something went terribly wrong. If indeed intentional or reckless wrongdoing has been committed, severe and appropriate sanctions should find those who have been found to have shirked their fundamental responsibilities. The departed, their grieving families and the people of Lagos deserve no less and should perhaps demand even more.

“As much as we are in collective pain and grief, we must also be clear and focused. Let us use this tragedy to serve as a strong warning and deterrent to end any malpractices and misconduct that might in any way contribute to such an incident.

“We must never become numb to the tragedies that befall others; we must work and strive to put an end to these frightening events and the brutal but avoidable deaths that go with them. Lagos is and must forever be a place of light and life where the best of human endeavour is our currency and our calling card”, the statement reads.

2023: Youth Group Urges Tambuwal To Join Presidential Race

By Akinwale Kasali

A Northern Youth Group under the aegis of Tambuwal Volunteers, has thrown their weight behind Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, urging him to join the 2023 Presidential race.

The Group said the idea of rotational Presidency should be quashed, saying that zoning shouldn’t be a yardstick for choosing a candidate to run for 2023 Presidency.

Comrade Bilal Sidi Abubakar, the Vice Chairman of the Group in a statement said that

power has rotated between the South to the North since 1999, adding that 2023 is an opportunity for Nigeria to get it right by voting a competent person that will move Nigeria forward.

“There has been zoning since 1999 and both the North and the South have produced Presidents but we are still lagging behind.

“We want a competent person to emerge as President in 2023 because the country is lagging behind”.

The Group added that the former Speaker of the House of Representatives has what it takes to lead the nation in the right direction. It pleaded with Governor Tambuwal to join the 2023 Presidential race to help pull Nigeria back from the brink and put it on the path of sustainable growth and development.

It furthermore said that the precarious situation of the nation puts it in a position where it is in dire need of a astute visionary leader like Governor Tambuwal to be the man behind the wheel for the progress, development and sustainable economic growth of the nation.

Tambuwal is of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Festive Period: NNPC Assures Of Adequate Fuel Supply

NNPC

By Fola James

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC has assured Nigerians of adequate fuel supply as the festive period approaches, noting that it has enough products in stock to last through out the period.

The corporation’s assurance comes on of reports of resurgence of queues in some parts of the country.

Mele Kyari, Group Managing Director, NNPC, gave the assurance while speaking to journalists in Lagos on Tuesday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the conference had as its theme: ‘Petroleum Industry Act: Energy Transition and the Future of Nigeria’s Oil and Gas.’

Kyari said NNPC’s objective was to provide energy security for Nigeria and ensure availability of petroleum products in the country.

He said: “As we speak now, there is speculation of fuel scarcity within the media but we have over 1.7 billion litres of Premium Motor Spirit in the country.

“We have another 2.3 billion litres coming in so there is no shortage in supply as being speculated.

“Of course there are issues about pricing at some depots but government has no plan to revise the pricing structure.”

Kyari said the ongoing United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Glasgow, Scotland, again highlighted the challenges faced by Nigeria and other African countries in the global energy transition.

He said President Muhammadu Buhari, in his speech before the world leaders, had demanded for energy justice for the continent and the need to exploit the available resources as a pathway to attain the net-zero carbon objective by 2050.

The NNPC boss noted that though Africa accounted for only about three per cent of the global carbon emission, the continent still had the responsibility to join the world in combating climate change.

According to him, Nigeria has identified its abundant gas resources as its fuel for energy transition, which informed the declaration of the Year 2021 to Year 2030 as the Decade of Gas by the government.

“We are making good progress in terms of the implementation of the PIA which is clearly creating the path for transition.

“There is no way we can achieve this feat without adequate infrastructure to transport the resources to where it will be used and that is why we are investing in massive gas infrastructure,” Kyari said.

Impeachment: Trouble In Imo House of Assembly

0
Imo State House of Assembly - IMHA

By Charles Igbo

The news on Tuesday, November 2, 2021, sounded unbelievable. Yet, it spread like wild fire during the harmattan season. A number of Social Media Platforms carried it. The Deputy Speaker of the Imo House of Assembly, Hon. Amara Chyna Iwuanyanwu, has been Impeached, the stories screamed.

Depending on the platform, it was wildly celebrated. Yet,  some commentators were cautious. They asked questions. Is it true? Is it possible? What happened?

There was confusion. It stemmed from the fact that the story added that six members of the House who have been on indefinite suspension for months have been recalled. Something fishy must be going on, everybody concluded.

Who is pulling the string?, was the question.

The question is legitimate. Iwuanyanwu evokes different emotions in people. He is, at once fiercely loved and fiercely hated. But it has always been thought that in the House of Assembly, he had more admirers than non-admirers.

However, in the Assembly, he is regarded as Governor Hope Uzodimma’s boy, his eyes in the Assembly. Some say he is the Governor’s man- Friday. They feel he snitches on them. Which was why the news of his impeachment was celebrated by some people. “Serves him right.” “This is the beginning of his fall. “Somebody called him the

Deputy choir master!”

When the six members of the Assembly were suspended, the story was that Iwuanyanwu was behind it. When the former Speaker of the House, Chiji Collins, was replaced by Speaker Paul Emeziem, the story was that Iwuanyanwu was behind it.

Truth, however, is that he is fiercely loyal to the Governor. Which was why the impeachment story came as a surprise. Was the Governor aware of the impeachment plan? If he was, why was he not able to stop it. Or, has Iwuanyanwu fallen out of favour?

If he was impeached, as was the story this Tuesday, and the suspended members recalled, then, something went wrong in the House. Loyalty has shifted. And, perhaps, the Governor could be the ultimate target.

According to Ogubunka Nwadike, the former State Publicity Secretary of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, who shocked the Party by defecting to the All Progressives Congress, Iwuanyanwu’s impeachment is targeted at the Governor. He said it is a prelude to the plan to impeach the Governor.

He said the plot to impeach  Iwuanyanwu, and so the Governor, was hatched in Lagos at the Sheraton Hotel. He said the meeting was, allegedly, between Emeziem and the Imo PDP hierarchy. And that Emeziem was given the sum of $300,000 (N168m) for the job.

According to Ogubunka, to impeach Uzodimma, they needed to impeach Iwuanyanwu first. But a PDP source has since dismissed Nwadike’s allegation as thrash. “How did Emeziem carry the sum of $300,000 back to Imo from Lagos? This is thrash. What has happened is that Iwuanyanwu has been paid back in his own coin.”

Iwuanyanwu’s impeachment was carried out on November 2, at what was allegedly, a hurried Plenary session. The motion to impeach him was moved by Hon. Even Nnodim of the Orsu  Constituency. He was the one who submitted the resolution to impeach Iwuanyanwu. He said out of 27 members, 18 members signed to impeach Iwuanyanwu as Deputy Speaker.

Receiving the resolution, the Speaker, Rt. Hon Paul Emeziem, said: “Since this resolution was signed by 18 members out of the 27, the resolution stands.”

Yet, it is still not known whether Iwuanyanwu has actually been Impeached or not. According to Ogubunka, it was a failed exercise. But others counter him, and insist Iwuanyanwu has been Impeached.

There is yet no official reaction from Government House. It is yet to be seen what the outcome will be. Will the impeachment stick or not? Will the Governor keep quiet and ignore? Is Speaker Emeziem on his way out, or will he consolidate? A group has already given him 24 hours to resign. But, time will tell.

The next few days will be dicey. And interesting.

Justice Odili: Supreme Court Says Invasion, A Mission To Kill And Maim

0
Justice Mary Odili attack on her Abuja residence

By Adesina Soyooye

After days of silence, the Supreme Court of Nigeria has reacted, very strongly, to the inexplicable invasion of the official home of one of its Justices, Mary Peter-Odili.

Justice Odili’s home was invaded in the evening of Friday, October 29, by a combined team of security men who claimed they came to execute a search warrant on her residence.

The incident was met with outrage across the country and beyond. Even though the search was eventually not executed, as the Magistrate, Emmanuel Iyanna, who signed the warrant revoked it, claiming he was deceived, no security  arm of the Government has claimed responsibility.

In a rare reaction to the scandalous incident conveyed in a statement signed by its Director of Press and Information, Akande Festus, the Supreme Court said it has had enough of impunity, and the treatment of the Judiciary as a whipping dog.

It described the invasion of Justice Peter-Odili’s home as “uncivilized and shameful show of primitive force on innocent judicial officer.”

And, aligned with the Government and people of Rivers State that the invasion was a mission to kill and maim. In sum, it was assassination attempt on Justice Peter-Odili and her family.

It said it has started its own discreet investigation, and would get to the root of the embarrassing incident.

Reads the statement in part:

“We are alarmed with the news of the unwarranted and despicable raid on the official residence of one of our senior justices in the Supreme Court, Hon. Justice Mary Peter-Odili on Friday 29” October, 2021 in a Gestapo manner.

“The attack unfortunately depicted a gory picture of war by some armed persons suspected to be security operatives representing different agencies of government who seemed to have come to kill and maim their target under the guise of undertaking a search whose warrant was questionable and baseless.

“We are deeply saddened and taken aback by this uncivilized and shameful show of primitive force on an innocent judicial officer that has so far spent several years of her productive life serving the country she calls her own.

“This incident brought back, rather painfully, the ugly memory of the October 2016 midnight invasion of the homes of our respected justices with no satisfactory explanations as to the true motive behind such brazen assault on our collective sensibility.

“We wish to make it abundantly clear that the Nigerian Judiciary is the third arm of the government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and should be respected and treated as such.

“We have had a full dosage of this fusillade of unwarranted and unprovoked attacks on our judicial officers and even facilities across the country and we say it loudly now that enough is enough.

“The judiciary should never be misconstrued by any individual or institution of government as the weeping child among the three arms of government that must always be chastised and ridiculed to silence because of our conservative disposition.

“Though there have emerged discordant tunes from the various security agencies that allegedly participated in the dastardly act, we are not lying tow on this dehumanizing treatment meted out to one of our own.

“We have commenced a full-scale independent investigation to unravel the true masquerades behind the mystery as well as the real motives behind the whole imbroglio.

“Similarly, we call on the Inspector General of Police of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to rise up to the occasion by carrying out a discreet investigation and make his findings known to the Nigerian public with a view to bringing the perpetrators to justice as quickly as possible.

“The Nigerian Judiciary cannot only bark, but can also bite. We can no longer be treated with disdain and levity. The rule of law and constitutionality must govern our conduct so that we can tag along with the comity of nations and be taken seriously too.”

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister for Justice, Abubakar Malami, Salami, under whose office the invading security agents were said to have operated from, issued a statement, denying complicity. He has ordered a probe into it.

The Police, the DSS and the EFCC, all denied knowledge of the raid. The Inspector General of Police has also ordered a detailed probe.

Both the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA,and the Body of SANs, have expressed outrage. While the NBA in a statement signed by its President, Olumide Akpata, vowed to get to the root of the incident, the Body of SANs on Tuesday, visited Malami over the issue.

Ikoyi Collapsed Skyscraper: Sanwo-Olu suspends Oki, LASBCA GM

By Akinwale Kasali

The Governor of Lagos State  Babajide Sanwo-Olu has decried the negligence of the Lagos State Building Control Agency, LASBCA, General Manager, Gbolahan Oki, over the ill-fated Building Collapse on Gerard Road, Ikoyi. The Governor has, therefore, suspended him indefinitely from office.

The unfortunate incident has left 14 people dead, nine rescued, while some are still trapped in the rubbles.

LASG have deployed more sophisticated equipment to the site to assist in the rescue mission.

Dr Obafemi Hamzat, Lagos State Deputy Governor, who visited the site of the collapsed building, encouraged rescuers to continue the search for victims still trapped, promising that the Lagos State Government wi leave no stone unturned in carrying out a thorough investigation to unravel what happened. He then  visited the Lagos Island General Hospital to see some of the victims receiving treatments.

A press statement by the Honourable Commissioner for Information of the State, Gbenga Omotoso,  stated that the Lagos State Government is setting up an independent panel to probe the collapse of the building, with members of the panel drawn from the Nigeria Institute of Architects (NIA), Nigerian Institute of Town Planners (NITP), Nigeria Society of Engineers (NSE) and other professional bodies.

It added that the Panel will independently investigate the remote and immediate causes of the incident and make recommendations on how to prevent future occurrence. The investigation is not part of the internal probe already being conducted by the government.

The statement also confirmed the indefinite  suspension of the LASBCA GM, emphasising that anyone indicted by the Panel would face the wrath of the law.

Governor Sanwo-Olu applauded all first responders and those who have joined the rescue efforts, including construction giants Julius Berger, Chinese Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).  A help desk has been set up at the site for people seeking information about their relations who may have been involved in the incident.

The Lagos State Government promised to embark on further foundation and borehole acidic level tests to ascertain the impact on the collapsed building.

These tests, LASG said, particularly will ascertain the borehole acidic level, most importantly for the entire Gerrard Road and adjoining areas.

The LASG also promised Lagosians that there will be no cover-up in the search for the truth in this incident and if anybody is found to have been indicted, he or she will face the law.

It implored all developers and property owners to adhere strictly to all Building Codes and Planning Regulations to ensure the safety of lives and properties.

A new dimension was introduced into Banditry as gunmen reportedly attacked the Ado-Ekiti residence of Yoruba Nation coordinator, Prof Banji Akintoye.

The attack was made known by the umbrella body of Yoruba Self-Determination Groups, Ilana Omo Oodua, in a statement on Tuesday by its spokesperson, Maxwell Adeleye.

According to the organisation, the incident happened on Saturday, while the Yoruba leader was away.

The statement explained that “The leadership of the umbrella body of Yoruba Self-Determination Groups, Ilana Omo Oodua (IOO), is displeased to inform the general public that the Ado-Ekiti country home of its leader, Professor Banji Akintoye, was attacked on Saturday, 30th October, 2021.

“Gunshots were fired into the house by assailants who apparently climbed a chair outside the gate to shoot in.

“Luckily, Professor Banji Akintoye was not around at the time, and nobody was hurt.

“Bullets suspected to be from AK 47 rifles were recovered after they dropped from the ceiling onto the floor.

“The matter has since been reported to the Ekiti State Police Command for investigation.

“We the Yoruba people within, and beyond the horizon of Nigeria will hold the Nigerian Government responsible if any evil happens to our leader or any of his relations.”

The Professor, a strong backer of Sunday Igboho and a leading light in the quest for an independent Oduduwa Republic out of Nigeria, is allegedly in the Republic of Benin.
