Okada Rider Clash in Ondo State

By Ayodele Oni

Pockets of protest by commercial motorcycle riders, popularly called okada, enveloped Akure, Ondo state capital on Wednesday, causing panic among the people.

It was over the alleged shooting to death of an okada rider by a policeman attached to a gas station.

The deceased okada rider was among those protesting the killing of two persons in an accident by another vehicle.

It was gathered that a stray bullet of a police officer that was on guard duty at a nearby gas filling station hit the deceased and he died instantly.

The officer was said to have shot the person while trying to disperse people from the scene of the accident which had already killed another okada rider and a passenger on the road.

The commercial motorcyclists mobilised themselves to A Division Police Station where the policeman had taken refuge and attempted to vandalize the station.

They broke into the gate and threw stones into the building while policemen and their families fled through the back gate.

They made bonfires on the ever busy highway causing tragic jam while pedestrians sought another route.

The Okada riders insisted that the policeman must be released for necessary jungle justice to avenge their colleagues death.

Ondo Police spokesperson, DSP Fumilayo Odunlami, said the situation was under control.

“There was an accident along Arakale where two persons were killed.

“One of our men while trying to rescue the driver of the car that killed an okada Rider and a passenger was attacked  and in the process, another okada Rider was killed.

“The protesting riders mobilised to A Division to attack the place.”

We’ll Honor Agreement By Paying ASUU, Says Ngige

Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige has said the Federal Government will begin to implement the agreement reached with the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, by paying their members outstanding debts owed them.

Ngige said though he is yet to be officially informed by ASUU about their impending strike and 22 days ultimatum, the Government would not watch the union go on strike.

Ngige spoke on Politics Today, a current affairs programme on Channels Television monitored in Lagos.

“The strike will not happen. For one, I know that the fund to pay with is there and the Ministry of Education has assured me that by Wednesday they would emanate letters to make sure that the disbursement reaches the accounts of the various universities. We are not paying the unions directly, it will get to the universities’ accounts.

“I will have a meeting with the Minister of State for Education who is the one in charge of the affairs now because the main Minister (Adamu Adamu) is overseas on health grounds. I will evaluate the situation with him and we would make sure that the disbursement goes on.”

This Magazine reported that ASUU gave the Federal Government a 21-day because it failed to implement the agreement reached with it.

President of ASUU, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke, had at a press conference, Monday, threatened to return to the trenches because FG reneged on their own part of the agreement reached by them.

Last year, ASUU had embarked on strike for the same reason of University Funding as well as the integrated parole system. “As far as we are concerned, we have hit the ground running, making contacts with their real employers – the direct employers of university teachers, which is the Ministry of Education and the National Universities Commission,” Ngige said.

On the issue of the revitalisation fund, Ngige said, “The fund is ready. The fund is in the account of the National Universities Commission and the Ministry of Education. They were doing what they called auditing of the earlier disbursed funds.

“Universities were supposed to retire the earlier funds given to them. As of the last meeting, 11 universities had not satisfactorily done that and, therefore, we gave a timeframe of two weeks to get those universities to conform and they would release the money.”

He said  that they paid what was agreed with ASUU. According to him, the bone of contention is subsequent payment.“The other one had been paid (between) January and February. This is now the second charge that is due in the agreement,” he added.

“I am not trying to make a case for the Ministry of Education and NUC (on) why they should not do what they are supposed to do but I know that before the next two weeks, we can sort out some of those low-hanging fruits. There are no problems because the money is already there,” Ngige said.

“Don’t buy everything hook, line and sinker that the Federal Government is not doing anything. If it was a system that we didn’t want to use at all from Day 1, we would have said it and we would not waste anybody’s time. But this Government believes in home-grown things; we believe in local content. This is part of our local content so that we can save foreign exchange for the country.”

Christianisation Agenda: Muslims Defend Osinbajo

VP Yemi Osinbajo

By James Orji

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo is not working against Muslims in Nigeria and it will be wrong to brand him as a hater of the religion, Muslim Rights Concern, MURIC, an Islamic rights advocacy group, has said.

MURIC was reacting to a recent claim that most of the appointees in the Vice president office, and those he has appointed into government are mostly Christians. Analysts said the allegation is intended to hurt Osinbajo’s presidential amibtion.

But the group which promotes the interest of Muslims in the country, and has insisted on another politician from the religion to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari after he leaves office, said the vice president has shown enough proof that he loves Muslims.

The Islamic body had recently thrown its weight behind Bola Tinubu, a former Lagos state governor’s quest to become president, even though the latter has yet to declare his intention to run.

Osinbajo is also said to be interested in the nation’s highest office, but had yet to declare interest.

The group cited the appointment of Ade Ipaye, a muslim and former commissioner in Lagos state and 17 other appointees by Osinbajo as a proof that he is not working against Muslims.

MURIC said in a statement that it will not join in the campaign of “blackmail, character assassination” against Osinbajo, adding that it is poised to say the truth no matter who is involved, as it is not in the character of genuine Muslims to do so.

The statement released on Wednesday said, “it has never been part of us. Hurting the innocent is equally alien to our DNA. Instead of hanging their actions on the necks of their adversaries, Muslims own up when they are the culprits. They prefer to be punished in this world in order to escape from the punishment of the hereafter.

Prof. Ishaq Akintola - MURIC
Akintola: MURIC Leader

“It is our oppressors who always make sure that they are the first to cry out when indeed they are the aggressors. No true Islamic group will engage in mischief, lies, deceit and intrigues. Genuine Islamic groups are transparent. You can read them just as you read a book.

“It is these characteristics that have been nagging at our conscience since the controversy surrounding the allegation of Christianisation levelled against Vice President Osinbajo began.

“The great Shaykh Uthman Bin Fudi said ‘Conscience is like a wound, only truth can heal it. Our conscience was jogged and it is only by telling the world what we know that we can have rest of mind,” the group said.

There is no evidence to link the vice president to any Christianisation agenda, MURIC further stated.

According to Prof. Ishaq Akintola, the group’s leader, “during our investigation, we stumbled on an article written by a female Muslim presidential aide in the VP’s office. The article, which surfaced recently on social media, affirmed the presence of 18 Muslim officials in Osinbajo’s office.

“The onus is on those who accused the VP of Christianisation to prove that some or all of those Muslim names in the VP’s office were fabricated to convince Nigerian Muslims that the VP is neither a hater nor an oppressor of Muslims.”

“An opportunity to confirm one of the claims made in the article defending the VP came our way just by chance and we feel compelled by principle to share the information since we are stakeholders.

“Nations are built by stakeholders who speak the truth. On the other hand, they are destroyed by those who withhold the same truth,” it said.

“The opportunity we refer to occurred way back in 2018 or 2019. It provided concrete and undeniable evidence which we witnessed by ourselves as a group and it confirmed that Mr Abdul Rahman Ipaye, a Muslim and a former commissioner in Lagos State who was mentioned in the article as the highest staff in the VP’s office is, indeed, a bona fide staff of Osinbajo.”

Ortom Laments, Says Cabal Has Hijacked Buhari’s Government

By Akinwale Kasali

Governor Samuel Ortom is perturbed by what he thinks is the devastating State of the Nation.

The Benue State Governor said that President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration has been hijacked by a cabal, and the President is handicapped to curtail the excesses of the cabal.

He stressed that President Buhari actually meant well for the nation when he was elected to the saddle in 2015, but, this changed when the alleged cabal took over from him.

Ortom made this disclosure while addressing the Media at the State House in Makurdi, the State Capital.

The former All Progressives Congress, APC, stalwart said that this was not the Buhari he knew before the 2015, asking: “Where are we now? We are just paying lip service and the country is going down day by day.”

Ortom lamented that the nation is 40 years behind, as it is lagging behind in all aspects.

“I believe in Nigeria. I believe in the unity of this country, but let us not take the line of mediocrity. There is injustice, there is no equity. There is no fairness in this country any longer. Nnamdi Kanu and Sunday Igboho are detained for one reason or the other, but no one is after kidnappers and bandits who are busy having a field day in the country.

“The security agencies are not going after them. In Benue State, over 1700 people have been killed and over 100 Army, Police and DSS officials have been killed and the Federal Government is helpless.

“This Government has failed; this Government has demonstrated that they have no capacity and collectively we have failed “, Ortom stated.

Commenting on his relationship with President Buhari, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, stalwart said: “Sycophants and cabals have tried to distance him from me, however, I have a positive relationship with security agencies in Benue State”.

Governor Ortom added that  it was because of that he recently signed a bill that empowered the Community Volunteers Guards to carry arms in the State, because Benue people are intimidated by the Fulani Herdsmen and Bandits that have continually terrorized the State.

Lekki Shooting Panel Report: UN Asks FG For Full Implementation

EndSARS Portest at Lekki

By Akinwale Kasali

The United Nations, UN, has called on the Federal Government to fully implement the recommendation of the Judicial Panel of Inquiry and Restitution set up to investigate issues surrounding the #EndSARS Protests of 2020.

Edward Kallon, the United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria made this call in a statement in Abuja, the nation’s Capital on Wednesday.

Kallon noted that the submission of the report of the panel was a welcome development.

He said, “I welcome the submission to the Lagos State Governor, H.E. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, of the reports of the judicial panel on claims of brutality and shooting in the Lekki area of Lagos State, during the 2020 #EndSARS protests.

“I urge the Government to implement the recommendations of the judicial panel of inquiry to rebuild trust and start the process of healing and reconciliation.”

Kallon stressed that the submission of the findings of the Judicial Panel would accelerate the process of justice and accountability.

The report submitted to Sanwo-Olu indicted the Military over the killing of nine youths. Four are missing, and presumed dead, while about 30 were injured by gun shots.

Ondo: Uproar Over Governor Akeredolu’s Son’s Appointment

0
Akeredolu and his Son, Babajide

By Ayodele Oni

The People’s Democratic Party, (PDP),  Ondo State has described the appointment of Babajide, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu’s son as a Director General in the Public service as inappropriate. It said; “The recent appointment of Babajide Akeredolu, a biological son of Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, SAN as the Director General of Performance and Project Implementation Monitoring Unit (PPMIU) is a flagrant abuse of office and affront on the people of Ondo State.

“The name Babajide Akeredolu became known in Ondo state when the State’s funds were used to procure a marriage for him in Colorado, USA, after the same marriage was consummated in Owo, his father’s birthplace.

A statement by PDP spokesman, Kenedy Peretei added that “He has since assumed authority as part of the triad of the reign of father, wife and son.

“The appointment as DG of PPMIU for Babajide, a young man who carries on as though he was the person voted for as Governor is part of the grand design to finally empty the treasury of the State before Akeredolu returns to Ibadan.

“Last year, Babajide pocketed a princely N433m as Consultancy fee on N4.3b on the “secret account” with Zenith Bank for more than ten years.

“Up till this moment, the Ondo State Government under Akeredolu has neither accounted for the money, nor the ten years accrued interest.

“Rather, it was Babajide who addressed a press conference, referring to Ondo State House of Assembly members as ‘making unnecessary noise’ over money he discovered.

“Babajide’s conduct is reminiscent of the ignoble actions of Commodus, son and heir apparent of Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius, who at age 12, upon finding out that his bath water was not sufficiently heated, ordered the servant to be thrown into the furnace.

“25% of all the Internally generated revenue in the State goes into the account of Canadian Systems Development Company (CSDC) under one Akin Oladimeji as MD.

“CSDC is an Ibadan based company that was brought to Ondo State by Babajide. The company was given office accommodation in the Governor’s office.

“They do not pay rents, neither do they pay taxes to the Government. Every month, 15% of the over N2b that is collected as IGR goes into Babajide’s personal account and the balance is wired to Lagos and Ibadan for the Consultant.

“Only last week, Babajide was reported to have brought another Consultant to take charge of forestry operations in the State.

“It thus appears that Mr Governor and his immediate family are bent on living fat on the lean resources of the people, when poverty has taken over the land, walking in all four legs.

“There is no further proof of Akeredolu’s insensitivity to the plight of the people, when within two years of tenure, he organized three lavish weddings for his children, all in foreign lands- In Mauritius, Canada and Colorado, USA.

“Each of these weddings were bankrolled with Ondo State funds. Officials of the State Government, family members and friends were in these countries to celebrate with Akeredolu and family.

“Yet, this level of opulence and wasteful life style only started when he became Governor.

“Mrs. Betty Akeredolu, wife of the Governor, has her own draining pipe also connected to the state treasury.

“She uses BRECAN, an advocacy group for breast cancer and Forum for Wives of Ondo State Officials ( FOWOSO) and female political appointees.

“Whereas, in the past, wives of Governors put smiles on the faces of women through HANDEF and Gbebiro, women and political appointees now contribute money for Governor’s wife through all kinds of under hand tactics and blackmail. Mrs Akeredolu has bought up every buyable property in choice places in Owerri.

“As the grand commander of the gang, Akeredolu himself within six months of his assumption of office bought four properties in GRA, Owo and renamed the street, Maranatha.

“Mouth watering offers were made to others with properties on the street, whether they are willing to sell to Mr Governor.

“This is apart from the more than 150 hectres of land acquired from farmers in Igbe quarters, Owo Local Government Area.

“It is very apparent that, it is the greed of the first family that is being fed, no longer their needs. Akeredolu, his wife and children must appreciate that, the resources they are wasting in this reckless manner was only given to them in trust for the people.

“They should remember that, the day of reckoning is very near.”

In its reaction, the  State Government stated that it was not surprised by the outburst of the opposition PDP.

A statement by the Commissioner for Information, Mr Donald Ojogo, maintained that “it will not be distracted by the recent outburst of the Peoples Democratic Party in the State.

“There is no way such sound appointment as that of the Governor’s ’s son would not have elicited uncanny attacks from the PDP.

“The Government remains focused and will not be distracted by senseless and mindless attacks from the PDP.

“One big error in public governance is the fear of taking decisions, and it becomes unpardonably grievous when sound decisions are avoided over what I consider unresourceful criticisms.

“There is no way such sound appointment as that of Babajide would not have elicited uncanny attacks from the PDP. They were expected.

“Ours is to be focused on what we are doing for the good people of the State and not to be distracted by lazy opposition.

“When Jang appointed his son, Yakubu, as a Commissioner in Plateau, it was okay for them; what about Okowa who did it in Delta? When their Principal’s brothers in Ondo literally did all appointments while they held sway, it was okay.

“We can only enjoy their gallery-looking dance. They are hypocritical aside being saddened by their antecedents.

“We are more concerned about the deliverables in whatever we do as a Government. In this particular instance of Mr Governor’s decision in respect of the son, it cannot be said otherwise; he made a right decision.

“This young man has been doing a lot of behind the scene in the last five years plus, to enhance good governance. He has demonstrated enough capacity in many respects. Time will tell as we sail along in full steam.

“I think the problem PDP has is the fact of apparent intimidation that a very sound and balanced second term cabinet has berthed.”

eNaira Will Reduce Commercial Banks Deposit-IMF

0

By Fola James

Commercial Banks in the country are set to lose customers and deposit to the CBDC also known as e-naira, the International Monetary Fund, IMF has warned.

The CBN, had said after launching the currency, four weeks ago, that it was not in competition with banks for deposits.

The CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele refuted the possibility of deposit money banks losing customers as a result of the introduction of the e-Naira. The apex bank later issued a statement where it said “eNaira opens up a whole new market of digital currency users for financial institutions to increase their customer base and add value to their account owners.

“Financial Institutions act as bridges between customers and the CBN, this increased customer interaction can help them adopt better customer support models.

“eNaira is not a subtle scheme to steal your customers. It is a collaboration to grant access to more financially excluded people.

“eNaira gives every linked financial institution access to the database of customers with wallets domiciled in their banks.”

But the IMF has disclosed in its ‘Country Focus; Five Observations on Nigeria’s Central Bank Digital Currency’, that competition for deposit is imminent with the introduction of CBDC.

The Bretton Wood US-based institution, also warned that the new digital currency poses a threat to cyber security, urging the Godwin-Emefiele-led CBN to prepare for various risk associated with digital currency, because “like digital currencies elsewhere, the eNaira carries risks for monetary policy implementation, cyber security, operational resilience, and financial integrity and stability.”

“For example, eNaira wallets may be perceived, or even effectively function, as a deposit at the central bank, which may reduce demand for deposits in commercial banks. Relying as it does on digital technology, there is a need to manage cyber security and operational risks associated with the eNaira.”

According to the IMF, the launch of the digital currency is drawing interest from the global world, and other central banks because of the size and complexity of Nigeria’s economy.

CBN must fashion out ways no manage risks associated with digital currency, the global financial institution said.

“The 2021 IMF Article IV mission emphasised the need for monitoring risks and macro-financial impacts associated with a central bank digital currency.

“The IMF is ready to collaborate with the authorities on data analysis, cross-country studies, sharing the eNaira experience with other countries, and discussing further evolution of the eNaira including its design, regulatory framework, and other aspects.”

Speaking while unveiling eNaira on October 25, President Muhammadu Buhari said the digital currency will boost the nation’s economy by over $29 billion.

“Let me note that aside from the global trend to create Digital Currencies, we believe that there are Nigeria-specific benefits that cut across different sectors of and concerns of the economy,” he added.

“Alongside digital innovations, Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) can foster economic growth through better economic activities. Indeed, some estimates indicate that the adoption of CBDC and its underlying technology, called blockchain, can increase Nigeria’s GDP by US$29 billion over the next 10 years.

“CBDCs can also help increase remittances, foster cross border trade, improve financial inclusion, make Monetary Policy more effective, and enable the government to send direct payments to citizens eligible for specific welfare programme,’ the president.

Lekki Shooting Report:Timi Frank Asks Buhari, Sanwo-Olu To Resign

By Akinwale Kasali

Following the report of the Justice Doris Okuwobi Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry on Restitution for Victims Of the Special Anti Robbery Squad and the Lekki Tollgate Shooting that indicted the Military, the Federal Government and Governor Babajide Sanwo- Olu, there are calls for the resignation and trial of President Muhammadu Buhari and Sanwo-Olu.

Timi Frank, activist and Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, APC, on Wednesday called for the immediate resignation and trial of the President Buhari for ordering the deployment of army personnel that attacked, injured and killed scores of youths during the #EndSARS protest at the Lekki Toll Gate last year.

He equally called for the resignation and trial of the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for requesting that the military be deployed to the Toll Gate.

In a statement in Abuja,  Frank said the call has become necessary since Buhari is the Commander-In-Chief (C-In-C) of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and therefore must take full responsibility for the gruesome action of the army against defenseless and peaceful protesters on that fateful night.

The United Liberation Movement for West Papua, ULMWP, Ambassador to East Africa and Middle East, insisted that Governor Sanwo-Olu, as Chief Security Officer of Lagos State, is culpable for illegally inviting soldiers to crackdown on youth exercising their constitutional rights to assemble and protest against the ills in the society.

According to him, the report of the “Lagos State judicial panel of inquiry on restitution for victims of SARS related abuses and other matters” has established beyond reasonable doubt that soldiers used lethal weapons which killed, maimed and injured scores of the protesters.

“After over a year of denial, subterfuge and coverups, the truth has been forensically established.

“Soldiers deployed by Buhari to Lekki Toll Gate based on a request by Sanwo-Olu harassed, brutalised, injured, maimed and killed innocent Nigerians that they swore an oath to protect as democratically elected political leaders.

“What happened on the night of 20/10/2020 at the Lekki Toll Gate as detailed in the report of the panel is clearly a crime against humanity which is a breach of the nation’s constitution and international law and United Nations conventions and protocols on the fundamental human rights of citizens.

“The law must now take its cause, punish those indicted and ensure adequate and manifest justice for the victims of the unwarranted incident.

“We commend the Justice Doris Okuwobi (retd.) led panel for demonstrating uncommon courage in the discharge of their assignment. The report is clear, detailed and evidence based.

“The panel did not only identify the Lagos State Governor as the one who invited the army, it equally listed names of army officers who carried out the ungodly, dastardly and unforgettable genocide.

“The panel has exposed the underbelly of lies by both the Lagos State Government that set up the committee and the Federal Government that has been defending the military over their wicked and ignoble role in the massacre.”

He called on Nigerians to demand the immediate resignation and prosecution of Buhari and Sanwo-Olu and their agents for violating their oaths of office and flagrant breach of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“This heinous crime against humanity must not go unpunished. Even though some of the actors now enjoy constitutional immunity against arrests and trial but they must be held to account now or after leaving office.

“The International Criminal Court must ensure that those indicted are extradited and tried at the appropriate time.

“Leaders of the free world including the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, France, etc, must ensure that the visas of Buhari, Sanwo-Olu, Army Generals and other security personnel indicted in the report are cancelled and equally banned from major international functions,” Frank said.

He called on Nigerians especially the youths to continue to demand justice for the #EndSARS victims, saying the “struggle has just begun.”

“We now know those who injured, maimed and killed our friends and colleagues. ‘20/10/2020: We Must Never Forget #EndSARS”, Frank said.

Hope Uzodimma

Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has directed that all healthcare facilities in the 305 INEC Electoral Wards in the 27 Local Government Areas of Imo State be fixed before December 15, 2021.

The Governor gave the mandate Tuesday in  a crucial meeting he had with all the 27 LGAs in the State at the Sam Mbakwe Executive Council Chambers, Government House Owerri.

Represented by the Commissioner for Health,  Dr. Barth Okorochukwu, Governor Uzodimma charged the Interim Management Caretaker Chairmen of the 27 LGAs of Imo State and the Officers In-charge of Health in the 305 Wards to take the directive seriously and act immediately.

The Commissioner for Health informed that Govermor Uzodimma was concerned about the health of Imo citizens, especially those in the rural areas, noting that for them to enjoy quality and accessible healthcare delivery, the Primary HealthCare Centres must be made to function  simultaneously in the rural areas.

Dr. Okorochukwu emphasized that the IMC Chairmen and the health Officers “would be involved in the supervision and monitoring of the projects, ensuring that they facilitate the work to beat the timeline targeted at actualizing His Excellency’s vision of Imo having access to health care delivery services which is in compliance with the World Health Organization mandate.”

She explained that after this phase, another phase involving the general hospitals will start as both arms of healthcare facilities are expected to function simultaneously.

Also speaking,  the Executive Secretary of Imo State Primary HealthCare Agency, Rev.
