FG Moves To Recover N30 billion Duties From Private Jet Owners

By Uche Mbah

Private Jet owners are currently in the eye of the storm as the Federal Government has, in their bid to recoup money from the billionaires heavily indebted to the FG due to deliberate defaults in their staturtory Import duties, moved against them.

There has been a marked proliferation of private jets in the country, so much so that marriages among the high and mighty are always an opportunity to showcase hundreds of jets which dot the Airports.

Meanwhile the commercial Aviation sector has been under the burden of alleged mismanagement and unreliability.

Most of the private jets hardly pay import and other sundry duties. In fact, at least N30 billion are estimated to be owed by their owners, who cut across religious leaders, business executives, including Bank CEOs, Oil Moguls, and celebrities.

In the bid to recover some of these duties, the Federal Government has instructed Aviation Agencies to ground defaulting aircrafts.

To this effect, The National Airspace Management Agency, NAMA; the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, and the Nigerian Customs Service, NCS, have been given marching orders to effect the debt recovery.

Federal Government, steeped deep in borrowed money, and appearing to receive more and more cold shoulders from international donor agencies, has been looking inwards towards local revenue generation.

It has experimented with Value added Tax, borrowed from pension funds, and manipulated the banking system to raise more money for running of recurrent expenditures. This is the latest of such local revenue drives.

In letters ordrering the grounding of 91 of such defaulting aircraft sent to the NCAA, and copies sent to both the NAMA and FAAN, the the Federal Government demanded indefinite grounding of the affected aircrafts until they offset their bills.

Titled “Recovery of Aviation Import Duty on Privately Owned Aircraft operating in the country”,  the letter reads in part:

“The Federal Government in its drive for enhanced revenues has mandated the Nigerian Customs Service to ommediately recover from defaulting Private aircraft owners the required statutory import duties on their imported aircraft.

“You may wish to recall the verification exercise conducted by the CS, initially scheduled for a 14 day period, but magnanimously extended over a sixty day period from 7th June through 6th August 2021. The outcome of the aforementioned verification exercise is a compilation of all private aircraft imported into the country without payment of statutory import duty.”

Quoting relevant sections of the Cutoms and Excise Act, the letter says that the full cooperation of the Agencies are required ”to ensure the success of this initiative and that all such private aircraft owners or representatives are denied administrative and operational flight clearances indefinitely, until an NCS issued Aircraft Clearance Certificate is procured and presented to your organisation as proof of compliance.

“For the avoidance of doubt, ALL aircraft operated in accordance with the Nigeria Civil Authority’s regulation for the issuance of permits for non commercial flight and those issued with flightoperations clearance certificate and maintainance clearance certificate accordingly are affected by this directive.

“Please find attached the list of all verified aircraft and indeed others of the Nigerian Civil aviation Authority’s register, which may not have come foreward for your record and necessary action. Strict compliance with this Directive is to be ensured.”

Then followed a list of 91 aircraft under scrutiny.

This Magazine found out that some of the affected Aircraft owners have protested that their aircraft do not qualify to pay such duties, because they are on wet lease. But the NCS insisted that beyond their complaints lie fraudulent documentations to evade the proper import documentations.

Following the directive, the Aviation authorities have, however, allegedly given counter directives asking the Aviation Agencies to suspend the grounding of the Aircraft pending directives from the Ministry.

This tends to lend credence to the rumor that there appears to be a rift within the Presidency, with dfferent Ministries making decicions without regards to a central body.

“It appears that each arm of the Presidency takes independent decisions, and guards its own territories jealously. This results in alleged flexing of muscles when other agencies tend to encroach in their territories”, says a source within one of the Aviation Agencies.

His allegation may seem to be correct as this magazine has also been told that the NCS has allegedly been given a marching order to impound the defaulting aircraft without recourse to the Ministry’s position.

Odili: Invaders To Be Arraigned Next Week; Immigration Officer Arrested

Justice Mary Odili home Invaders

By Gideon Njoku

The 14 suspects who invaded the home of Supreme Court Justice, Mary Peter-Odili, will be arraigned before a Court next week.

The 14 of them, led by a fake CSP of Police, Lawrence Ajodo, will now be joined by a senior Immigration officer, Abdullahi Usman. Usman has just been arrested in connection with the invasion  of Peter-Odili’s home.

The Justice’s Maitama, Abuja home was invaded by a group, now described by the Police as a criminal syndicate on October 29, 2021.

Flaunting a search warrant signed for them by a Magistrate, Emmanuel Iyanna, they said they were members of the Joint Panel Recovery Unit.  The unit operates under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Justice. Iyanna revoked the search warrant hours later saying he was misled.

The invasion was greeted by outrage nationwide,  prompting those whose offices were mentioned in connection with it to quickly issue a denial. Those who denied involvement include the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister for Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, the Police, the DSS, and the EFCC. Both Malami and the Inspector General of Police ordered an investigation into the scandalous incident.

When the Police, eventually, cracked the case, they arrested and paraded 14 suspects, who the Force Spokesman, CP Frank Mbah,  said were members of a criminal syndicate and were on an illegal criminal mission. They are made up, he said,  of Police, Soldiers, Lawyers, Bankers,  Journalists, a Herbalist and a prayer warrior of the Muslim faith.

Mbah revealed that CSP, Ajodo, is fake. However, there was shock when Ajodo  admitted being fake, but said he is a consultant to Malami. Malami issued a statement vehemently denying Ajodo’s claim.

Speaking to Sunday Punch, Mbah said the 15 suspects will be arraigned next week for prosecution.

This, perhaps, means that investigations are over. However, a couple of the suspects, including  two soldiers, whose identities have not been revealed remain at large.

Oluoke and wife

Sons and daughters of Oke-Igbo, an ancient town in Ileoluji/Oke-Igbo council area of Ondo State, on Saturday, celebrated the 28th edition of the Annual Oke-Igbo Day.

The Royal Father of the hilly town, Oba Lawrence Oluwole Babajide, the Oluoke of Oke-Igbo, was in high spirit as he proudly recounted some unique achievements and giant strides recorded since his three years reign as the Traditional Ruler, with a rebirth of New Oke-Igbo.

Sharing in the joy of the Monarch and the entire indigenes of the town, were Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, the Ooni of Ife who doubled as the Royal Father of the day, Ondo State Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN and an illustrious son of Oke-Igbo, Mathew Oye Oyerinmade, aka Mato, who was the chief launcher at the occassion.

They all hailed the Oluoke  exemplary leadership qualities, especially the concept of a New Oke-Igbo.

According to Oba Babajide, “it is pleasant to note that virtually all indigenes of Oke-Igbo, both home and abroad have aligned themselves with the New Oke-Igbo mantra.

“There is no doubt that ‘Oke-Igbo Tuntun’ has gained so much attraction that nothing can clog its wheel.

“It is my prayer that the Lord will grant us all the enablement to deepen our patriotic interests in our community.”

The monarch recounted some developmental achievements of his reign, stressing that all hands must be on desk to “build Oke-Igbo of our dream that will be an envy of our peers.”

Some of the achievements of the Monarch three years on the throne include ; 2.5 kilometer township road project funded by Governor Akeredolu’s led Government that is 70 percent completed; Refurbished moribund water corporation, renovated and commissioned; the birth of LOBREM MF BANK, a microfinance bank for Oke-Igbo, commissioned with two standard ATM machines, ready for use soon.

In his Goodwill message, Oba Ogunwusi promised to key into the New Oke-Igbo project, adding that Ile-Ife would remain the big brother to the ancient town in order to fast track its social and political development.

Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN while affirming his commitment towards massive infrastructure development of Oke-Igbo, noted that the town has always been his second home, with his undieing love for the late famous writer, an Indigene of the town, Chief D.O Fagunwa.

Chief launcher for this year Oke-Igbo Day, Mathew Oyerinmade, Mato thanked the king, organisers and  Indegenes of Oke-Igbo for the honour bestowed on him, as he announced the sum of N26 million donation for developmental projects in the town.

Fuel Subsidy: CNPP Slams NLC, TUC, Other Labour Leaders

0
Chief Willy Ezugwu

Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) has knocked the leaders of the Nigerian labour unions, including the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), accusing them of “representing their personal interests and not that of their members.”

The CNPP is a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday by its Secretary General, Chief Willy Ezugwu, said it was prepared to lead the anti-subsidy struggle when Nigerians are ready to take their future into their hands.

Accusing the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and the Federal Government of being deceitful in implementing the subsidy regime, saying that “what the federal government wants to do is fuel price increment, not subsidy removal.”

The CNPP noted that “it is disheartening that the Nigerian labour unions have joined the All Progressives Congress led federal government in its deceitful and manipulative tendencies since the APC government came to power.

“Before they won the election in 2015, the APC made Nigerians to believe that fuel subsidy does not exist, tagging it a scam. But immediately after they won the election, the APC led federal government swiftly increased the pump price of petrol.

“The former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources and Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Ibe Kachikwu in December 2015 revealed that the federal government has concluded plans to remove the subsidy on fuel by 2016.

“By May 2016, the Federal Government announced that it had removed fuel subsidy and petrol was to sell for N145 per litre. In fact, NNPC made Nigerians believe that marketers were free to bring in fuel cargoes and sell, subject to meeting standard quality control.

“But in the deceitful character of the federal government, the NNPC then insisted on a benchmark of N145 per litre as a recommended pump price. Do you remove subsidies and dictate or suggest prices at the same time if you are sincere?

“The CNPP at the time queried the rationale behind removing the subsidy and at the same time interfering in pump price by fixing a benchmark of N145 per litre of petrol.

“While highlighting the contents of a briefing after a meeting with Vice President Yemi Osinbajo in 2016, Kachikwu said: “We have just finished a meeting with various stakeholders presided over by His Excellency, the Vice President. The meeting had in attendance the leadership of the Senate, House of Representatives, Governors Forum, and Labour Unions (NLC, TUC, NUPENG, and PENGASSAN)”, the then minister told Nigerians.

“But at a point, the federal government made a U-turn on the fuel subsidy removal when, contrary to viral media reports in 2016 that the federal government has ended fuel subsidy, Vice President Yemi Osinabjo said it was not true, explaining that what the government did was to withdraw the monopoly enjoyed by the NNPC to allow free market sales.

“The free market sales and importation of petrol by the independent marketers never happened because the federal government simply deceived Nigerians that subsidy was removed. Nigerians endured but till date, there has not been any meaningful improvement in the lives of the poor.

“This cycle of deceit has continued till date as the federal government has hinted on yet another fuel price increment which it has again tagged fuel subsidy removal. How many times will the government remove fuel subsidies?

“The same labour unions leaders who were part of the earlier negotiations are the same ones negotiating with the federal government today in another cycle of personal enrichment while Nigerians are to pay N340 per litre of petrol and at a time cooking gas is already out of the reach of the ordinary citizens.

“It is laughable that the only palliative from the federal government is N5, 000.00 naira to a few Nigerians, which government officials will eventually siphon into private pockets like the COVID-19 conditional cash transfer.

“With the level of infrastructure decay in the country, where all federal roads are not motorable, the federal government is talking about cash transfer because it is the new safe way to siphon our commonwealth.

“The CNPP is ready to lead Nigerians anytime they want to end this series of subsidy removal deceit by the federal government in connivance with labour leaders in the country”, the CNPP concluded.

“I appreciate my Beloved Parents, Wonderful Siblings, Families and Friends that I shared this vision with and they gave their supports

Happy 40th Anniversary Great FUTA and Happy Convocation to me.”

I’m Proud To Be APC – Fani-Kayode

By Adesina Soyooye

Femi Fani-Kayode, former Minister for Aviation, says he has no regrets defecting to the All Progressives Cogress, APC.

He was reacting to stories in the Social Media to the effect that he has been betrayed by the APC.

Fani-Kayode, a founding member of the APC, on defecting from the PDP, defected to the PDP again a few months to the 2019 General Elections. He was, thereafter, appointed the Director of Publicity, Presidential campaign of the PDP.

To the shock and amusement of most people, a few months ago,  he went back to his vomit, defected to the APC, after he had sworn doing that would be over his dead body. When he defected, many had said it was to shield himself from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, which is prosecuting him over funds given to his office to prosecute the 2019 election campaign.

But about  two weeks ago,  he was again a guest of the EFCC, prompting stories that he has regretted defecting to the APC, because the party has betrayed him, and had not given him immunity from EFCC.

But Fani-Kayode says perish the thought.

Reacting in a post on Instagram, he reiterated he had no regrets defecting to the APC. He said he is honoured to be APC member, and remain a proud member of the party.

He wrote: “I am proud to be a member of the APC. I  have NO regrets. I NEVER said that APC has betrayed me. I am proud & honoured to be at the party.

“What God has ordained cannot be stopped. I shall be what God wants me to be. My destiny is irreversible, and I am unstoppable.”

The EFCC had invited him over alleged forgery and manipulation of documents.

He was granted bail on self recognition after interrogation.

2023: Group Bars Igbo From VP’s Office

0

By Charles Igbo

A Group which goes by the name The Movement For The Actualization Of Nigerian President Of Igbo Extraction, MANPIE, has barred every Igbo man/woman from aspiring to the office of the Vice President in 2023.

MANPIE is a new Association which main focus is to see an Igbo occupy the office of the President in 2023. It says it is, by so doing that so that  the Igbo will have a sense of belonging in Nigeria. If the South-south and the South-west can aspire to the office of the President, so can the South-east, MANPIE insists.

Not a few people from the South-east insist that if Nigeria is a country of justice and equity and fairness, then somebody of Igbo extraction should be the President of Nigeria in 2023.  Every other zone has had their son occupy the office, except the South-east. The people think it is deliberate marginalization. That Nigeria deliberately kept the South-east off the radar of the Presidential seat. That is what MANPIE is all about, and has, therefore, barred any Igbo from aspiring to the office of the Vice President, or the coordinator to any Presidential candidate from another zone.

Sylvester Unuero,     MANPIE’s South-east Chairman,  in an address he presented at the launch said a Nigerian President of Igbo extraction in 2023 will be an affirmation that the Igbo belong to Nigeria just like other tribes. He said that with one voice, the Igbo can achieve that.

His words: “Ndigbo only need to get their acts together for an Igbo to emerge as President of Nigeria in 2023. The arc of the universe is long but it always bends towards justice. Ndigbo are the major ethnic group in Nigeria yet to produce a President.

“And so, if we go forth with this faith and this determination to achieve the Presidency of Nigeria in 2023, Ndigbo will usher in a new day and a new Nigeria

“When that day comes, the fears of insecurity, marginalization and doubts clouding Nigeria’s future will  be transformed into confidence and excitement that Nigeria will accomplish creative goals.”

On how the Group intends to enforce the campaign, the Chairman said: “The campaign will be mounted in open spaces of the land, in the public domains, in the mainstream media, and the internet. It will have nothing to hide.

“This campaign solicits the support of all Nigerians who believe in equality of all people, in fairness and social justice.

“It demands the attention of all our patriots who subscribe to the principle of equal access to opportunities including power. The project calls for an understanding of conscience and refined sensibility who are unfettered by the prejudices  of our past unencumbered by illogical myths and legends.

MANPIE reassured Igbo sons to hang in there. It said:” Today, MANPIE says to Igbo sons and daughters be not afraid, shun seeking for Vice President and Coordinator positions and run for the President. If the South-west/ South-south emerged from the Presidential contest, why can’t an Igbo man emerge in 2023? So, today we are saying that no Igbo man should run for Vice President in any political party.”

Till date, only former Senate President/ Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Anyim Pius Anyim, has declared an interest in the office of the President under the PDP. The other person is Sam Ohuabunwa, a Pharmacist and former NIEMETH boss.

Nobody knows yet under which party he plans to run.  As it is, the APC seems to be tilting towards the South-west.

The two main parties are the PDP and the APC.

Insecurity: Okorocha Denies Uzodimma’s Allegation; Invites IGP To Investigate

0

By Charles Igbo

The former Governor of Imo State, Senator Rochas Okorocha, has asked the Inspector General of Police, to investigate the allegations against him that he is the sponsor of the security breaches in Imo State.

The Imo State Government, speaking through the Commissioner for Information, Declan Emelumba, had accused Okorocha of being behind the various security breaches which the State has been battling for months.

The State Government was reacting to Okorocha’s request on the floor of the Senate, for the intervention of the Senate in the security situation in Imo State. Stung by Okorocha’s submission, the State Government said it was made in bad fate, and that Okorocha was indirectly  calling for a state of emergency to be declared in the State. It wondered on what basis Okorocha was inviting the Senate’s intervention, and asked if the security situation in Imo was worse than those of a number of States in the country. If Senators from those other States are not calling for such intervention, why is Okorocha wishing it on Imo State?

The Government accused Okorocha of being behind the insecurities in the State. Those harassing the State, the Government said, are Okorocha’s goons who he uses to harass the State just to create a poor impression of the State and its Government.

But Okorocha, reacting to the Imo State Government’s Allegation in  statement by his Media Adviser, Sam Onwuemeodo, said his request on the floor of the Senate was in good fate. He said he expected commendation for drawing the attention of the Senate to the Imo situation, instead of being called names.

He said he would never sponsor insecurity in a State he governed for eight years, and dismissed the allegation as unguarded.

He, therefore, called on the Inspector General of Police, IGP, to investigate the  allegation against him and make the findings public.

Okorocha: “The lmo  governor decided to take the route of abuses and propaganda against his brother Senator, who had governed the State before him and who is also the Senator of his Zone. He should have collaborated Okorocha’s fresh ideas on the floor of the Senate, on how to solve the Imo Security problem.

“Having said all these, it is our candid request, that the Inspector-General of Police  and other Concerned Security Agencies,  should investigate the Imo governor’s accusation against Okorocha, with the aim  of finding out the truth or otherwise of this costly accusation. We would also delight that the outcome of their findings be made public in due course.”

Governor Uzodimma and Senator Okorocha, even though in the same party, APC, are  not political friends. Aside from seeing Uzodimma as being responsible for his son-in-law, Uche Nwosu, not succeeding him as Governor, Okorocha has not forgiven Uzodimma for not disbanding the various Judicial Commissions and Panels of Inquiry set up against him by the former Governor Emeka Ihedioha’s administration. All pressures  on Uzodimma to do that was in vain as he said disbanding the Commissions and Panels would be unfair to Imo people.

The Government, in implementing the Whitepaper on  the reports of the  Panel on  Land and Other Related Matters, has just stripped Okorocha, his family and cronies of over 86 plots land forcefully taken from people and the State. They have been returned to their original owners.

DSS Warns: Terrorists Are Coming To Invade Border Communities

0
DSS

By Gideon Njoku

From the Department of State Services, DSS, comes a scary warning. Terrorists are coming.

Ever alert to its primary duties of intelligence gathering, the DSS alerted that Insurgents are on their way to attack border communities in Ogun State and other border Communities around the country. Their main targets, the Secret Police said, would be military installations and facilities, its intelligence gathering strongly confirms.

The DSS has, therefore, warned the Nigeria Customs Services and other security agencies to be on alert and repel the terrorists.

The warning, according to a report by the Punch, was contained in a letter by the State Director of the DSS, Ogun State, M.B. Abdullahi,  dated November 25, 2021, to his counterparts in the Customs and other Security Agencies.

Terrorists have been on the prowl in Nigeria for years, especially in the North where it has worsened in the past couple of years.

Abdullahi’s letter which he titled Plans By Insurgents To Launch Attacks On Military Bases In various Border Communities reads:

“Available intelligence indicates plans by insurgents and criminal elements to carry out simultaneous attacks on Military bases in various border communities across the nation anytime from now.

“In view of the foregoing and the likelihood such attacks are not limited to military personnel only, all law enforcement and security agencies with operational bases at border communities are advised to take note of the above threat and emplace countermeasures with emphasis on personal security of operatives to frustrate the planned attacks, please.”

Nigeria has lost thousands of souls, both on the side of  civilians and security agencies to such sudden attacks by insurgents and other criminal elements.
