I Never Said It Is Not Right For Southeast To Produce Next President – Anyim

0
Anyim Pius Anyim

Frontline presidential aspirant, Senator Pius Anyim, on Sunday denied saying that it was not right for the Southeast to produce Nigeria’s next president.

Anyim, former President of the Senate, had declared his intention to seek the ticket of his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to contest the 2023 presidential election.

But an online newspaper quoted him as saying on Saturday that it was not right for the Southeast to produce President Muhammadu Buhari’s successor.

The online platform quoted Anyim, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) as saying, “Is it right for the Southeast to produce the next president? My answer is legally no, and the reason is that the constitution is clear. The constitution says every Nigerian of 40 years is entitled to aspire for that office.”

Anyim, who spoke at an event organised by a group, United For Better Nigeria Initiative, in Abuja with the theme, “Imperative of Rotational presidency,” was further quoted to have said, “On the other side, morally, is it right? Is it an entitlement? I will say yes because the federal character principle enshrined in the constitution encourages rotation.

“The reason I have to make this clarification is that when the right you have is not legal, the only approach and the instrument you have is persuasion.”

But a statement by the frontline politician’s media office on Sunday said the report was mischievous and not a true reflection of what he said at the occasion.

Insisting that it would be contradictory for him to be aspiring for the presidency and at the same time saying it is not right for Nigeria to have a president of Igbo extraction in 2023, Anyim said his comment which was premised on a lecture he delivered at the 6th World Igbo Summit at the Gregory University, Uturu, Abia State on December 18, 2020, was grossly misrepresented.

Answering the question on whether a President of Southeast extraction is a right, Anyim said:

“Under the Constitution of Nigeria, every adult of 40 years of age is qualified to be elected to the Office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“Accordingly, there is nothing under the law that disqualifies any Igbo man from aspiring to be President; the challenge is capacity to meet the mandatory requirement of the highest number of votes and spread.

“The other angle to this perspective is whether zoning the Presidency to the South-East geo-political zone is a right? Legally, the answer is no, but morally there is a merit in such demand.

“This expectation canvases that the federal character principle has assumed a legal backing. Just as the rotation of the Presidency is not captured in the constitution neither is the geo-political zoning arrangement.

“Still, the fact of the reality of the application of the zonal structure in our national equilibrium has assumed universal moral force that can no longer be ignored nor dispensed with.

“For such critical national office as the Office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria not to be rotated among the zones can only breed discontent and disharmony.”

He explained that though the quest for a president of Igbo extraction is not a legal right but an equitable one, it must be pursued with vigorous persuasion and consensus building with other regions.

Senator Anyim, therefore, called on the group which is advocating for a power shift to Southeast to double their effort by strategically engaging other Nigerians through advocacy and dialogue on the need for power to shift to the Southeast adding that in a democracy, power is not given just for asking but through deliberate and strategic engagement for mass support.

He further stated that the journey of building an equitable society is usually a challenging and tough one but many nations have arrived at the desired destination safely.

Nigeria, he said, must continue to deepen and consolidate the gains of its democracy to meet the yearnings and aspirations of all Nigerians.

I Did Not Deserve Jail, I Am Innocent – Orji Kalu

0

Sunday, December, 5, 2021, is the second anniversary of the incarceration, at the Kuje prisons, Abuja, of former Governor of Abia State, now Senate Chief Whip, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu.

Kalu and co., including his company, SLOK, were prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, over an alleged embezzlement and fraud during his tenure as Governor, to the tune of over seven billion Naira.

He was sentenced to a 12- year jail term, by a Federal High Court. But six months into his term, the Supreme Court  overturned the sentence on technical grounds, on May 8, 2020, and ordered a retrial.

Kalu was released from jail in June, 2020.

To mark the anniversary of the day he was jailed on that fateful December, 2019, morning, Senator Orji Kalu took to his verified Facebook page to bemoan the fate that befell him, his experience in jail, and insisted he is innocent of all the allegations against him.

He decried a country where those who do not work hard to make money, would want to strip those who worked hard to make money, of all their money, arguing that he was a wealthy man before he became a State Governor.

He said he has forgiven all those who ganged up against him with lies to send him to jail.

The EFCC has, however, gone back to the Federal High Court to start afresh, Senator Kalu’s prosecution, a move many people have condemned.

Following, is Senator Kalu’s thoughts on the second anniversary of his committal to jail.

Kuje: Two Years After

“Today is the second anniversary of my incarceration at the Nigerian Correctional Service Medial Security Custodial Centre, Kuje, Abuja. I was imprisoned for an offence I never committed.

“Despite all the witnesses rescuing themselves, I was pronounced guilty of 39 charges out of the 39 concocted charges leveled against me. What magic!

“In 1998, I used my money to fund the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), my former party and individuals. I built several businesses and I left more than $4 billion balance sheet before venturing into politics.

“Today, those who have done no business or multiplied any money parade themselves as holy saints whereas those who have worked hard and multiplied money are expected to be penniless. I am not a saint and should not be judged as one.

“I didn’t start life as a politician. I am a businessman; a capitalist with human face.

When I was governor 14 years ago, I served Abia with my conscience and left a prosperous and popular state. I provided security, free education, infrastructure, built hospitals, and never owed salaries or pensions. I created the enabling environment for business growth, encouraged and supported many businesses, and also grew sports.

“After I left office as Governor in 2007, I stayed out of power for 12 years and only became a Senator in 2019. The beauty of constitutional democracy is term limit and at all times, the government is a continuum.

“Today, my performance as governor is also being replicated as a Senator.

Aside from reconstruction of schools, material empowerment, medical outreach, job offers, I have completed more than 31 rural roads in Abia North and looking forward to others to be completed soon.

“My dear friends and compatriots, I am grateful to God for the six months I spent in Kuje; He sanctioned it. God knows I fear no one except Him. Those who conspired against me wanted me buried at all cost, but like the biblical Job, there is a sense in which God allowed those temporary and tragic events to happen to Job.

“My perception of life changed after the six months of incarceration – life is vanity. I did not just learn a lot of lessons, I became a reformed and better man. I was very impacted by what happened to me. More than ever, I have relearnt that kindness and forgiveness are what should rule the world, not wickedness. I have since forgiven all the people that were instrumental to my ordeal. I forgive them because they probably did not know what they were doing.

“I recall that on the first night I slept in the prison, I was questioning God. On the third day, God told me He allowed me to be imprisoned for a purpose and for a short time. I vividly recall I was scheduled to be in Wuhan, China on December 9, 2019, but my incarceration halted my journey.

“For some, my imprisonment may have meant different things to them; but for me, my family, friends, business and political associates, supporters, as well as well-wishers, it was destiny at play.

“Those who knew me early in life will bear witness that I am a child of grace and destiny. When I was a Student Union President at the University of Maiduguri, my activism led to my suspension and some of my executives from the school. Even though the school recalled me, I refused to return because my executives were not included.

“My life has been that of testimony.

For all my friends and colleagues sitting in the upper and lower echelons who stood by me and the people of Abia North during the trying period, I remain very grateful.

“Throughout the six months, I ate once a day . I am so much grateful to my lovely wife for her timely delivery of the food . Her love, care, patience , prayers and endurance kept me strong . I also thank my dear mother for her prayers and motherly concern which must have caused her so much trauma.

“God will continue to bless the two women in my life .

My special thanks and appreciation goes to the President of the Senate, Senator Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan for his loyalty to friendship. God will bless him and his family

My profound gratitude also goes to Senator Ibikunle Amosun , Senator Kashim shettima and Senator Sani Musa and a host of others too numerous to mention. May God show you love always.

“The hatred, jealousy, betrayal, greed, bitterness in this country is enormous and terrible. People will just hate, curse, and envy you because you are successful, without considering how much hard work, energy, endurance, and patience you have expended in building businesses and your life.

“How I so much wish for love and empathy in this country. How I wish we can embrace and love each other. How I wish people could be more loving and considerate towards their neighbours with zero sentiments of tribe and language.

How I wish people can have respect for human lives. I hope that with God on our side, our dreams will someday come true.”

APC Wins Ekiti Council Poll

By Ayodele Oni

Ruling All Progressives Congress, (APC), in Ekiti State; has won the 35 local Government Chairmanship seats in the Councils poll held on Saturday.

The Chairman, Ekiti State Independent Electoral Commission, (EKSIEC), Justice Babajide Aladejana announced the results at the Commission’s office in Ado Ekiti on Sunday.

He explained that the exercise took place in the 16 Statutory Local Government Areas and 19 out of the twenty Local Council Development Areas.

Justice Aladejana said a Sole Administrator would be appointed for Oreniwa Local Council Development Area.

Oreniwa LCDA was created last week in addition to the existing 19 to pacify a section of the people of Ikole that protested their inclusion in the earlier LCDA with headquarter at Ijesa Isu.

The EKSIEC chairman also announced that the APC won all the counsellorship seats.

He admitted that there was low turn out of voters during the exercise, but applauded the people of Ekiti State for their peaceful conduct.

According to him, there would be bye election in one of the wards in Erinjinyan Ekiti where the poll was disrupted.

The People’s Democratic Party, (PDP) had announced that its members would not participate in the election as a result of its distrust in the membership of the State Electoral umpire.

Despite PDP boycott, four other political parties including APGA, YPP and others participated in the council poll.

Sacked Workers Of Ekiti House Of Assembly Service Commission: Group Urges Gov Fayemi To Intervene

0

By Ayodele Oni

A Group in Ekiti state has written to Governor Kayode Fayemi over the sack of 21 workers of the State House of Assembly Commission early this year.

The Group, Ekiti Patriots, in an open letter, appealed to the Governor to wade in and reinstate the affected workers, whose appointments were Unjustifiably terminated.

The letter, dated 5th December, 2021, and signed by its President, Barrister Ezekiel Ogunrotila stated that “Your Excellency ,it is not only nauseating but also suicidal for twenty one Workers wrongly sacked and their salaries removed from the payroll of the Accountant General office after their due and diligent appointment by the Ekiti State House of Assembly Service Commission and were getting salaries for good ten years unbroken.

“Then Honorable Taiwo Olatunbosun found joy to  terminate their appointment abruptly and the affected Workers are presently wallowing in suffering and poverty.

“It is very pathetic, your Excellency, if to say the least, because for the past eleven (11) months these sacked House of Assembly Workers have become jobless; not less than three of them are critically ill, one female worker among them lost her foetus due to pychological trauma she had undergone, three of the workers lost their aged parents due to depression neccessitated by their breadwinners losing their jobs unjustifiably.

“It is expedient to state at this juncture that all the 21 sacked Workers are indigenes of Ekiti State.

“Your Excellency, it is informative to say  that our  attention was drawn to several letters written and duly dispatched to His Excellency and  the leadership of Ekiti State House of Assembly and Ekiti State House of Assembly Service Commission Chairman Rt Honourable Taiwo Olatunbosun.

“We were told that several  meetings were held and presided over by the Rt Honourable Speaker of the House of Assembly Honourable Funminiyi Afuye but have not yeided any good result  for the affected Sacked Workers.

“In the same vein, our attention was drawn to several interest groups ( including organized Labour)  that have written innumerable letters  of appeal to His Excellency to spare a good thought for these 21sacked Workers, but all to no avail and it is not good for the image of Ekiti State as a fountain of knowledge and citadel of humanity.

“Arising from these catalogue of references of efforts at ensuring that social dialogue is deployed to resolve this precarious and frustrating problems affecting indigenes  of Ekiti State so as to get them back to work have failed,  hence, we resort to this open letter so that it will not dent  His Excellency image now or in nearest future on Nigeria project .

“Ekiti Patriots, as a socio-cultural  group concerned with the development of Ekiti State in all ramifications, want to admonish all stakeholders  in the state to ensure that interest of Ekiti State is paramount for the all round development,  devoid of political acrimony that will heat up the polity.

“We should be sensitive enough to know and acknowledge that all indigenes from various communities in the state have equal birth right  and should be allowed to exercise their rights and privileges with justice and fairness.

“Mr Governor should treat this letter with commitment and conscience. We are concious enough that His Excellency has been denied access to sensitive letters like this, which is very unfortunate.

“We shall be appreciative of your  good disposition to reinstate the 21 sacked Workers of Ekiti State House of Assembly in order to make them live  normal life again.”

Nigeria Loses Foreign Direct Investment To Botswana, Mauritius

Nigeria has lost its enviable position as a major investment destination in Africa, according to RMB Africa, an investment advisory company which in its latest report ranked the biggest economy in the continent number 14 behind smaller countries such as Botswana and Mauritius. The company ranked Egypt as number one investment destination in Africa.

According to the company, the top 10 African countries to invest in are Egypt, Morocco, South Africa, Rwanda; Botswana, Ghana, Mauritius, Côte d’Ivoire, Kenya and Tanzania.

In 2014, Nigeria was ranked number two in the continent, a position she has now lost due to paucity of foreign direct investment, FDI. She was ranked eight, two times consecutively in 2019 and 2019.

The National Bureau of Statistic, NBS had in its first and second capital importation report disclosed that the country witnessed the lowest FDI in 11 years, with just $875.62 million flowing into the country from abroad.

According to the report, FDI dropped to $77.97 million in Q2 2021, indicating a 49.6 per cent and 47.5 per cent decline compared to $154.76 million and $148.59 million recorded in the previous quarter and Q2 2020 respectively.

According to RMB in its report titled “Where to Invest in Africa”, it said the COVID 19 headwind has changed the world view about business.

RMB Africa Economist, Daniel Kavishe said, one of the major factors used in the current ranking is the conduciveness of the business environment, as well as the various fiscal measures applied by ranked countries to combat the COVID 19 pandemic.

According to Kavishe, “the inclusion of a fiscal score in our rankings aimed to score governments’ fiscal positions and provided a basis from which investors can understand specific jurisdictions.

“Although the pandemic brought devastation, it also enabled opportunities for reimagining policies and trade relationships. Increasingly clear now is that home-grown strategies to tackle poverty, inequality and unemployment across Africa must be implemented. If not, all of Africa suffers.”

He said the economy is likely to pick up with a good mix of fiscal policies by the government.

“The sheer size of Nigeria’s economy and large population base has undoubtedly aided the country’s economic environment and has led to an increase in investments in the economy over the past 10 years.

“The country boasts significant hydrocarbon resources and considerable agricultural and mining potential. With fiscal support expected to increase and continue over the next few years, given both the coronavirus shock and oil price collapse, the economy is expected to grow but at a slow and steady pace.

“One of the key tenets for its development will be the efforts that have been made to support small and medium enterprises through monetary policy reform. This should support the country’s efforts as it continues its expansion into sectors such as information technology.”

RMB said over reliance on oil is not a good thing, when there are many other undeveloped sectors which can support economic growth.

“Nigeria’s heavy reliance on oil means that the drop in oil prices and production generated by the OPEC+ agreement is strongly impacting the economy. COVID-19 came at a time when the economy was still rebalancing from the drop in oil prices during the 2014 to 2016 period.

“Therefore, a lower drop in reserves, tight liquidity and a weak currency can still be expected. The government, which has been criticised for its slow pace of reform, still faces a myriad of security challenges that destabilise the country, such as the activity of the Islamist terrorist group Boko Haram in the northeast, forcing many people to flee,” the company said.

Lagos 2023: Sigh Of Relief For Sanwo-Olu, As Jandor Joins PDP

0

By Akinwale Kasali

The Second Term bid of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu  got a boost following the defection of his close rival and a potential threat to his second term bid, Olajide Adediran, popularly known as Jandor, to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Jandor was welcomed into the PDP  fold by

former President of the Nigerian Senate and former Kwara State Governor, Abubakar Bukola Saraki over the weekend.

The grass root politician and a strong force in the APC, led the faction in Lagos under the aegis of the Lagos4Lagos Movement from the 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas of the State to the PDP.

Receiving the defectors, Saraki, assured them that they “are moving to the party that would rescue Nigeria, to the party that would rescue Lagos State, to the party that would change the fortune of this country.”

Jandor has been having a running battle with the Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led APC leadership in the State, querying the rationale behind some decisions and choices, and also against the imposition by the leadership of the Party.

The Lagos4Lagos Movement championed by Jandor had conducted parallel congresses during the Ward, Local Government and State Congresses of the APC recently, calling for transparency and equality in the Party.

It would be recalled that the Congresses conducted by the Jandor-led group were not recognised by the National leadership of the party, which ratified the Congresses held by the APC faction loyal to Bola Tinubu.

The new PDP member had indicated interest in running for the Governorship position in the State, threatening Governor Sanwo- Olu’s second term ambition, as the popularity of Jandor has over the years gathered momentum.

But his defection to the opposition is a sigh of relief to Governor Sanwo Olu when political campaign and hostilities resume in few months time.

Sanwo-Olu’s Peace Walk: Three Million Indigenous Lagos Students To Participate

0

By Akinwale Kasali

The National Union of Lagos State Students, NULASS, has thrown its weight behind Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s Peace Walk.

While addressing Lagosians on the report and subsequent Whitepaper from tte Panel he set up on the #EndSARS protest that rocked the nation, with Lagos as its epicenter, Sanwo-Olu had said he and Lagosians would embark on a Peace Walk to heal the wound of the protest that cost the loss of lives and destruction of both public and private properties worth billions of Naira.

He had, specifically, invited a couple of celebrities who participated in the protest, including Musician, Falz, and Comedian, Macaroni, to join him. Both men rejected the offer saying it was like dancing on the grave of the dead.

But the apex body of the indigenous students body in Lagos State has promised to mobilize not less than three million of its members to join the Governor in his proposed walk for peace, healing and prosperity of the Centre of Excellence, Lagos.

NULASS, in a statement issued and signed by its President, Akinola Shasanya, and its Public Relations Officer, Abdulsalam Hassan, stated that it was bent and ready to back the Governor following his intervention in education, which has shown that he deserves the support of all the indigenous students for peace in Lagos State.

The statement titled: “Three Million NULASS members to walk with Sanwo-Olu to promote peace in Lagos,” said Lagos State deserves true healing after the disturbances that trailed last year’s protests against police brutality.

The students body said only the sustenance of harmony can guarantee the realisation of all indigenous students aspirations.

It, therefore, urged all their members to come out in large numbers to join Governor Sanwo-Olu to walk for peace and harmony of Lagos State.

The statement reads in part: “Solidarity greetings from the Atlantic city to all indigenous Students of Lagos State. We are glad to inform all members that NULASS will walk with the Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu to promote peace in the center of excellence.

“As the apex indigenous students body of the center of excellence, it’s part of our duty to heal our land from atrocities.

“Lagos State deserves true healing after the disturbances that trailed last year’s protests against police brutality. It is only the sustenance of harmony that can guarantee the realization of the aspirations of all indigenous students.

“NULASS is ready to facilitate better communication between the government and the students to sustain mutual relationships and resolve issues before they become intractable.

“On this note, we urge all members to come out in mass to join the governor to walk for peace and harmony for our dear state because his antecedent in education has shown that he deserves our support during this period.”

The #EndSARS protest took place nationwide in October, 2020.

Universities Should Stop Producing Non Self-reliant Graduates – Gov Akeredolu

Rotimi Akeredolu at Ajayi Crowther University

By Ayodele Oni

Ondo State Governor, Mr Rotimi Akeredolu, SAN, has said that institutions of higher learning in the country will only be relevant when they start producing problem-solvers and not just certificate holders.

Governor Akeredolu said the hollow repetition of outdated and inapplicable theories which are taught in the institutions of learning will only produce highly certificated citizens that lack capacity to solve basic problems.

The Governor declared that  true centres of learning must not be quiet at this crucial moment in the country, adding that; “We live in a period when the interventions of true intellectuals are needed to illuminate darkened paths.”

The Governor spoke at the 12th and 13th combined Convocation ceremony of the Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo, Oyo State on Saturday.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Richard Olatunde stated that at the occassion, Governor Akeredolu was conferred with an award of Doctor of Laws (Honoris Causa) of the University.

He noted that all activities in the institutions of learning must be geared towards self-reliance, saying science must be promoted above superstitious beliefs.

“Any institution of higher learning or research centre whose focus is not on these practical means of coming out of doldrums betrays its mandate.”

Governor Akeredolu tasked the academia not to be tired of educating the people on the best way possible out of the current predicament as a country.

“They must enlighten us about the concept of federalism. We must know the limits and responsibilities of states as component units in a federation.

“We should be certain of the meaning of a constitution as the basic law of a democratic country.

“There must not be doubts as regards political ideas such as sovereignty, legitimacy, rights and duties of citizens.

“They must educate the people to understand why all authorities must be subordinate to the people and civil service must be made to actualize this objective.

“Our centres of research and learning must be ready to come up with innovations on how best to plant our food and feed our people.

“We must depend on our children to fix our roads, hospitals and secure the land.”

The Governor added that the education of a citizen is the most important assignment of the society which he said is represented by the government at all levels.

Mr Akeredolu pointed out that the challenges faced by any society must form the basis for the design of a curriculum of instruction, adding that its content must reflect the aggregate of the collective aspirations towards development.

“The current process of certification, promoted vigorously by a system which appears content churning out graduates without requisite capacity for the qualifications with which they are saddled, must be reviewed.

“Our Universities must not be seen as centres of preparing young people for an ultimate carnival-like procession culminating in the award of degrees and diplomas which are a veritable embarrassment to the holders.

“Certificates are mere evidence of participation in a process. They do not necessarily bear testimonies to capacity.

“The disturbing reality which finds expression in the presence of multitude of unemployed graduates in an underdeveloped country should be a source of deep anxiety.

“While inadequate funding may be adduced as a factor militating against qualitative education, it is disingenuous and escapist to look away from the fundamental cause of progressive rot in the system.

“There has been a disconnect between the social realities and the pretentious emptiness served as diets of instruction.”

Debt: China May Be Angling To Own Nigeria

Nigeria’s debt profile rose to $4.36 billion as at June 30, 2021, with China leading the pack of creditors, which include  France, Japan, India and Germany.

It was $3.85bn at the end of 2019, according to data obtained from the Debt Management Office.

China, which put stringent conditions in their loan agreements is known for shylock tendencies when it comes to loan recovery.

Recently, according to reports which were later denied, loosely, China seized and annexed the only International Airport in a Central African country, fuelling speculation that Nigerian infrastructure may yet travel the same road since Nigeria is continuously borrowing.

Nigeria spent $402.74m within a year and half servicing bilateral loans. She borrowed $400m to service the loans.

The interest on the new loan is still accumulating, while it added to the former debt.

The loans consist of roughly 14% of the total external debt, according to the Debt Management Office.

As at December 31, 2019, Nigeria owed $3.18bn to the Exim Bank of China.

Besides China, $76.13m is owed to France’s Agence Francaise Development, $361.75m to Japan International Cooperation Agency, $32.14m to the Exim Bank of India, and $202.27m to Germany’s Kreditanstalt Fur Wiederaufbua.

Last year, Nigeria could not afford to service the debts owed Japan, France and Germany. But

$94.61m was paid to China and  $382,310 to India. This was in the first quarter of 2020. But in the second quarter, they serviced France and Germany with $14.22m and $44,340  respectively.
