I Never Gave Up While In Prison – Jailed Ondo Prophet Recounts Ordeal

0
Prophet Oluwatuyi

By Ayodele Oni

Within a year of establishing the Church, it became a Mecca of sort as people from all walks of life, from far and near, came to receive miracles from the Cleric.

The Church, Sotitobire Praise Chapel, was located at Oluwatuyi area, Akure, the Ondo state capital with Prophet Alfa Babatunde as the founder. He became a god to so many of his adherents as they believed that whatever he said must come to pass.

However, the unusual happened during one of the Sunday services in 2019 when a boy, Gold Kolawole, aged 13 months was declared missing in the Church. The parents gave account of how the missing boy was dropped at the children’s section of the Church and on the return of the mother to look after him, he was nowhere to be found.

There were protests about the missing child which led to the burning down of the Church building and many vehicles parked within the premises.

Thus commenced a legal battle to ensure that the law caught up with those responsible for the missing boy. It was the State versus Prophet Alfa and some members of his Church.

At the end of it all, the Prophet and others were found guilty by an Akure High Court presided over by Justice Olusegun Odusola. He thereby clamped a life sentence on him on  October 6, 2020.

Justice Odusola  explained in his judgement that his decision was based on what he described as Prophet Alfa’s complicity in the mysterious disappearance of the  13-month-old boy, Gold Kolawole from his Church.

He was sentenced on a two-count charge of conspiracy, as well as aiding and abetting kidnapping along with five other persons who are members of his Church.

Convicted along with Alfa were teachers in the children department which included, Omodara Olayinka, Margaret Oyebola, Grace Ogunjobi, Egunjobi Motunrayo and Esther Kayode.

The Prophet thus began his sojourn at the Olokuta Maximum Correctional Centre in Akure while his lawyers, after consultations with him, immediately filed an appeal against the decision of the High Court.

In his brief to the appellate Judges, Counsel to Prophet Babatunde Alfa, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo SAN, gave highpoints of his appeal as conspiracy, aiding and abetting kidnapping, which were grounds his client was convicted.

According to him, at Sotitobire Church in a broad day light, a child was declared missing, the police was investigating and suddenly the DSS took over the investigation from the police. It was based on the investigation of the DSS that the appellant was tried and convicted.

Awomolo argued that his grouse was that DSS did not have the power to take over the investigation from Police.

The Counsel to Prophet Sotitobire said the trial Court convicted the appellant not because of any eyewitness or any confession, but he was convicted because of circumstantial evidence.

He argued that for the totality of the findings of the trial Court, the allegations could not be linked to Prophet Sotitobire on the basis of circumstantial evidence.

He, however, urged the Court to set side the judgment of the trial court which convicted the Appellant and sentenced him to life imprisonment.

Presenting his own brief, the Attorney General and commissioner for Justice, Charles Titiloye, argued in respect of the claims of Counsel to the appellant that the DSS had no right to investigate and tender evidence in respect of the case.

Tititloye pointed out that the DSS did the investigation because there was a threat to law and order when the issue of missing child broke out.

He hinged his argument on the fact that after the alleged kidnapping,  there was serious tension the town, as the Church was burnt, many people were killed and property  destroyed.

He said it was based on the crisis that erupted that made the DSS to take over the case, urging the appellate Court to uphold the judgment of the High Court.

The turning point in the life of the Prophet was again on Friday, December 3rd when the Court of Appeal delivered judgement in the matter. This is after being incacerated for almost two years.

The appellate Court, presided over by Justice, Rita Nosakhare Pemu set aside the judgement of the lower Court and gave back the Prophet his freedom.

Thus on Tuesday, 7th December, after his Counsel perfected necessary papers, Prophet Alfa regained his total freedom and left the Correctional Centre for his home.

The Prophet was welcomed by a crowd, apparently remaining members of his Church that were full of praises for his release.

The Prophet spoke evil for the first time as he rained curses on those behind his travails, saying he was picked from the altar and sent to prison but added that God should expose the evil people who abducted the boy and those behind his travails.

“Either man or woman, who sent me to jail without investigating, my God that took me away from prison will expose those who perpetrated the evil.

“I was taken from the pulpit to the prison over what I don’t know anything about. But I was hopeful that one day, the truth will come out. God will expose the evil doers.”

South West Govs, FG To Clash Over Amotekun Arms

By James Orji

The six governors in the South west are set to clash with the federal government over their insistence that the regional security outfit Amotekun must bear arms.

Recall that Abubakar Malami, had last January, described Amotekun as illegal and unconstitutional, warning that the federal government will not recognise any security bodies set up by the states.

Amotekun was set up last year by the six states in the region as a response to the spate of insecurity fulled by marauding herdsmen and kidnappers in the country but its operatives had yet to be allowed to bear arms like the police and others.

This development, Governor Seyi  Makinde of Oyo state said has hampered the ability of Amotekun to effectively tackle  crimes in the region, particularly bearing in mind that they confront criminals on the daily basis who carry sophisticated weapons.

The situation must not be allowed to continue, he said, adding that the governors are currently in talks withe the federal government on the matter.

Makinde stated, “With the recent experience in Oyo State, it has become necessary to call upon the Federal Government to recognise the need to upgrade the capacity of Amotekun in providing security.

“In Oyo State, Amotekun has become the first responder and this was demonstrated during the jailbreak in Oyo town, where Amotekun suffered loss of lives because there was a disparity between the firepower of the Amotekun and the criminals.

“The South-West governors have resolved to call upon the Federal Government to allow for increased capacity so that there can be a meaningful role being played by Amotekun in the provision of security.

“The era of facing criminals bearing AK-47 and X15 with sakabula (Dane gun) and pump action gun in the modern time is a ridiculous error. Therefore, Amotekun must be allowed to play the role that it can provide security, because as of today, the presence of Amotekun in all areas of Oyo State has brought about improved security that is being enjoyed.,” Makinde said.

Malami had n his response to the establishment of Amotekun, said it posed severe danger to the corporate existence of Nigeria, adding that the federal government will not recognise the regional security body.

He said “the Federal Republic of Nigeria is a sovereign entity and is governed by laws meant to sustain its corporate existence as a constitutional democracy. It is a Federation of states, but with the Federal Government superintending over matters of national interests. The division of executive and legislative authority between the Federal and State Governments has been clearly defined by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended).

“It is against the same background that matters relating to the peace, order and good government of the Federation and in particular, the defence of the country, are enshrined in the Exclusive Legislative List. The Second Schedule in Item 17 deals with defence. This is a matter that is within the exclusive operational competence of the Federal of Government of Nigeria. No other authority at the state level, whether the executive or legislature has the legal authority over defence.

“The setting up of the paramilitary organization called “Amotekun” is illegal and runs contrary to the provisions of the Nigerian law. The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) has established the Army, Navy and Airforce, including the Police and other numerous paramilitary organisations for the purpose of the defence of Nigeria,” Malami said.

By James Orji

The Lagos State government has made it mandatory for Lagosians who want to attend or host social gathering during the festive period to have genuine vaccination cards, following discovery that some unscrupulous persons are obtaining fake COVID 19 cards.

Governor Babajide- Sanwo-Olu made this known on the heels of the outbreak of omicron variant of Corona virus in the country. The United Kingdom, on Monday, added Nigeria to the list of countries whose citizens are restricted from traveling to the country.  The Boris- Johnson-led UK said it took the decision to curb the spread of the virus which was first discovered in South Africa last week.

The Lagos state government said it has received information about the spread of fake covid 19 vaccination cards, a situation Governor Sanwo-olu described as very disturbing and “worrisome trend for us to note and we are currently working with the NCDC (Nigeria Centre for Disease Control), DSS (Department of State Services) and the Police to investigate and bring to book the criminal gangs involved in this reprehensible activity.”

“Our State Mobile Courts will be used to prosecute all those involved in flouting the regulations; as well as those engaged in the fraudulent production of fake covid test results and vaccination certificates,” he said.

The governor said the state has released guidelines that organisers of social events must follow during the festive period.

According to him, “all Social Events must be duly registered to obtain Event Safety Clearance from the Lagos State Safety Commission website prior to holding; and the guidelines set out below must be strictly adhered to.

“Where possible events should be held outdoors. Occupancy limit at any event must not exceed 60% of maximum design capacity of the event centre.

“Every attendee of a social gathering MUST present their Vaccination Cards or digital bar code page showing at least first dose but preferably double dose full vaccination. “n unvaccinated people, a negative PCR within 72 hours will be an exemption.”

He directed events organisers to conduct on the spot covid 19 tests to ascertain the status of those attending such events.

The governor said, “everybody, irrespective of vaccination status, MUST be subject to Rapid Diagnostic test (Antigen) to be conducted AT THE EVENT VENUE OR within 24hrs prior to the event at designated laboratories. (Request for rapid tests at the venue requires an application through the Safety Commission).

“Under 18 years of age are unvaccinated and the above applies. Guests and service providers with high temperature (above 37.5) are to be politely turned back and referred to paramedics or the emergency response team on ground.

“All guests and service providers at the event must wear a nose mask or face shield before entry.

“All guests and service providers must endeavour to wash their hands before entering the venue or use hand sanitisers after which temperature checks should be carried out,’ Sanwo-olu said.

Apprehension Over Coffin Deposited At FUTO’s Gate

By Charles Igbo

The University community of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Tuesday morning, woke up to a shocking find.

And, since then, palpable fear has been the order.

The academic community woke up to see a coffin deposited at its main gate.

Nobody knows who deposited it, or when it was deposited, and for what reason it was deposited.

But on seeing the coffin, everybody made a conscious effort to avoid the use of the main gate. They, rather, took alternative gates into the sprawling University compound.

There are two speculations as to who placed the coffin at the gate.

One school of thought put it down to cult activities. A group of cult boys, outside the FUTO community, this group thinks, must have deposited the coffin there as a warning that they could storm the campus. In which case they were warning any other cult group in the school, not in their group, to get ready.

But another school of thought says perish the thought. It says the coffin must have been placed by a couple of communities surrounding FUTO to scare the academic community over land issues.

The intimidating expanse of land on which the University is built belong mostly to Ihiagwa, Obinze  and Eziobodo  communities. And even though the Federal Government says it paid the agreed, and adequate compensation to the land owners, there have been altercations and disagreement over the land given to FUTO.

While the natives insist they were paid peanuts while FUTO allegedly keeps encroaching on their other lands and expanding, FUTO accuses the Communities of deliberately encroaching on the lands meant for the University Community, and denying the University access.

A few months ago, Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, on a visit to the University, assured the academic community that it would have access to all the land allocated to it.

At the time of filing this story, there has been no official reaction from the University. And nobody or group has claimed responsibility for the strange incident.

The Lagos State Police Command has secured a Court order to detain the Students of Dowen College, Lekki,  Lagos, over their alleged involvement in the murder of their school mate, Sylvester Oromoni.

According to the Police, two more suspected students, and three House Masters who were on duty on the fateful day, have also been arrested.

The new arrests take the number of students now in custody to five. Added to the House Masters, the number of those in custody is now eight.

It is not known if the two students are those the Police said on Monday, were at large or if the now arrested two are a new set.

However, a Court has ordered that the students be detained in a Juvenile Detention Centre for 21 days, pending the end of investigations. It is not known, yet, where the House Masters are detained.

Sylvester Oromoni, 11 years at the time of his murder by, allegedly, his school mates at Dowen College, had mentioned the names of the five students who, allegedly, bullied and tortured him for refusing to be a cult member.

He died a painful death in a hospital thereafter. His death sparked an unprecedented outrage, and forced the Lagos State Government to close the school, which has also now been sealed by the Police, indefinitely.

The Management of the school, in a statement, said Sylvester died of injuries he sustained while playing football.

The results of the X-ray on him, according to his father, shows otherwise.

The State Police Command has cautioned angry youths and hoodlums not to take laws into their hands following a fatal accident that claimed the lives of students at Ojodu, Lagos.

A trailer had rammed into the students who were waiting for a bus at the bus stop on their way back home after school, and killed at least seven students. Many were, also, injured.

Angry students and youths had taken to  the streets in protest, attacking any trailer that came their way.

But, giving an account of the fatal accident which claimed the lives of the students if Bab Fafunwa Millennium School, Ojodu, the Police Command ordered an investigation into the tragic incident.

According to the Police, at  about 2:15pm, Tuesday, December 7, at Ojodu, a DAF truck with Registration No. APP 438 YA, driven by Bolaji Kabiru rammed into some pedestrians leading to their death.

The Lagos State Police Public Relation Officer, CSP Adekunle Ajisebutu disclosed that as a result of the accident, two males died on the spot, seven females and five males totalling twelve victims sustained varying degrees of injuries.

It however took the intervention of Traffic personnel from the Motor Traffic Department of the Ojodu Police Division who immediately visited the scene for order to be restored.

Corpses of the dead students whose identities were not yet known as at the  time of  filing this report were evacuated with the support of personnel of the Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, and were deposited at the morgue of the Mainland Hospital, Yaba, for autopsy.

The injured victims were taken to God’s Apple City Hospital, Ojodu Berger; St. Michael Hospital, Ojodu; and the Lagos State Emergency Hospital, Toll Gate.

The erring driver is said to have been apprehended and kept in police custody. However, the angry students who were later joined by hoodlums set the accidented vehicle ablaze.

They also attacked the Ojodu Police Station in their large number, demanding the release of the driver for jungle justice.

However, when their demand was not met, they became violent. In the process, they destroyed four vehicles parked in the premises of the police station and another mobile truck on the highway.

To avoid total breakdown of law and order, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Odumosu, immediately ordered deployment of policemen comprising Tactical teams, Rapid Response Squad and others to the scene to maintain law and order.

The protesters were professionally dispersed with minimum force without any further injury.

While commiserating with the families who lost their loved ones in the fatal accident, the Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, appealed to sympathisers and other members of the public to allow the Police carry out a thorough investigation, and avoid seeking self help.

A report had alleged that the accident was caused by LATSMA and VIOs who were in pursuit of the trailer before it lost control and rammed into the students crushing them. Initial reports had put the number of fatalities at between seven and 15. But the Police says two.

Post-election Tension In Gambia: Jonathan, Elders Forum Sue For Peace

The leadership of the West African Elders Forum (WAEF) has appealed for calm in The Gambia following the tension that has built up in the capital city of Banjul after some of the candidates in the December 04, 2014 presidential elections rejected the results declared by the country’s electoral commission.

A statement released by WAEF on Tuesday in Banjul and signed by the Forum’s Chairman, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, urged the candidates to respect the outcome of the election in the interest of peace and advised them to seek legal redress, if necessary.

He further counselled the candidates to abide by the terms of the code of conduct they all signed before the election which required them to embrace peace and accept the result of the election.

A few candidates led by the main opposition party leader Mr. Oussainou Darboe have rejected the result of the election won by the incumbent President, Mr. Adama Barrow, citing irregularities in the declaration of the result by the Independent Election Commission (IEC). Since then, there have been sporadic clashes on the streets between security forces and Mr. Darboe’s supporters.

Dr. Jonathan spent part of Monday and Tuesday morning trying to mediate and restore normalcy by meeting with various stakeholders including President Barrow, Darboe and some of the candidates.

The statement said: ‘The West African Elders Forum appeals for calm from all Gambians and urges all the candidates to respect the outcome of the election, in line with the code of conduct for peaceful elections, which they all signed on November 11, 2021.

“The WAEF knows that the processes of democracy and elections, which are human activities, are never perfect. For this, the Forum recognises the rights of candidates to legally challenge the result of an election, should they have issues with the processes that produced the outcome.

“In the specific case of the just-concluded Presidential Election in The Gambia, we urge the candidates who may not be satisfied with the outcome,  in the interest of peace, to leverage the avenues for legal redress, should they consider that necessary.”

The former President noted that the election was generally acclaimed by international and citizen observers to have been peaceful,  free, fair and conducted according to the provisions of the laws of Gambia and the Electoral Act (2009).

“The WAEF sees this as a positive development for the cause of democracy in the sub-region and commends the Gambians for their consistency in the use of special marbles and drums, instead of ballot papers,  which is a unique process that has proven to be cost-effective, makes for easy voting and enhances transparency.”

He emphasised that the presence of WAEF in The Gambia during the election was in line with its mandate to “interface with stakeholders in the sub-region during elections, with a view to offering the good offices of its members to help tackle any thorny issues arising from the electoral process before, during, and, especially, after the polling day when proactive dialogue,  consultations and conversations with stakeholders are crucial for preventing and resolving tensions and conflicts.”

A delegation of WAEF led by Jonathan, former Nigerian President and His Excellency, Kadre Desire Ouedraogo, former Prime Minister of Burkina Faso and former President of ECOWAS Commission arrived in Banjul on Thursday December 2, 2021 to interface with the stakeholders in the elections, especially the presidential candidates.

The Forum which is an initiative of the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation(GJF) was formally inaugurated in March 2021 and is made up of former Presidents, Prime Ministers, and foremost West African leaders and statesmen.

He said: “In the two days before voting started on December 4, 2021, the Delegation met with most of the candidates, including the sitting President His Excellency Adama Barrow and the former Deputy President, Oussainou Darboe, the chairman of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), Alieu Momarr Njie and his team, as well as, members of the civil society, youth groups and student leaders. During these consultations, the delegation appealed to the stakeholders to abide by the laws of the land and tow the path of peace during the election in order to ensure that The Gambia would not experience any election-related conflict.

“The Delegation also interacted with the international observers from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the African Union (AU), the Commonwealth, the European Union (EU) and the Electoral Institute for Sustainable Democracy in Africa (EISA) and commended them for coming in here to assist the sub-region in ensuring that the election is peaceful, free and fair.

“Although WAEF is not strictly an election observation mission, members of the delegation visited few polling stations at Senegambia and Brusube areas on election day, to have first-hand experience of the polling process. The delegation was impressed with the reports of a general atmosphere of peace,  free and fair processes that characterised polling across the country, on election day.”

He stressed that the Forum will continue to be on hand in the country “ to walk and work with the good people of The Gambia to ensure that the outcome of the 2021 Presidential election will not only deepen the roots of democracy in the country, but will help to illuminate the path of peace, democracy and sustainable development in the entire sub-region.

Fresh facts have emerged over the death of Seven Students at the Ojodu axis of the Lagos State when a truck driver ran over them.

It was gathered that officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA and Vehicle Inspection Officers, VIO, had given the truck driver a chase, leading to the unfortunate accident as the truck driver rammed over the students who were at the Bus Stop.

Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command has, however, arrested the driver along Ogunusi Road, Grammar School Bus Stop, Lagos State.

Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Adekunle Ajisebutu, confirmed the driver of the truck has been arrested, adding that investigation has commenced into the incident.

“The driver has been arrested. Investigation into the accident is ongoing,” he said.

It was earlier reported that the students were on their way home after school activities and had wanted to cross the road when the truck ran over them.

A mob descended on the driver and chased him to the Ogba area before the police apprehended him.

The mob, comprising angry youths, clashed with policemen at the scene who tried to maintain law and order.

Emergency responders including operatives of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency turned back from the scene in the ensuing riot.

The incident grounded vehicular movement as motorists deserted the road and stranded commuters trekked long distances.

Following this development, the Ojodu Local Council Development Area Executive Chairman, David Olusegun Odunmbaku, has called for calm, urging his constituents not to take laws into their hands and let the law take its cause.

Odunmbaku, in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Jumu’ah Abiodun, expressed his condolences to the families of the victims of the truck accident on Tuesday, leaving many students dead.

“My heart is broken for the families and friends of students who lost their lives in this horrible accident. This is a devastating tragedy, my thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by the horrible accident that killed Grammar School students,” Odunmbaku said.

“My heartfelt condolences to the victims’ families, May God grant them the fortitude to bear the irreplaceable loss,” he added.

The Council Boss persuaded sympathisers to respect the families’ privacy. “There’s need for calm in this trying time, we must all at the same time respect the privacy of the bereaved families”, he said.

Multiple Award-winning Nigerian-American author and Feminist, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has been named amongst the list of 100 inspiring and impactful women from around the world for 2021.

The BBC, in its annual recognition of people who have been impactful within the year ending, listed Adichie under the “Culture and Education” category.

31 women out of the 100 chosen women belong to this category.

It is believed that   her choice was determined by her self acclaimed inclination towards feminism.

In her citation, the BBC notes Adichie’s TED Talk in 2012, We Should All Be Feminists, was a kickoff point for a global conversation on feminism.

The dialogue engendered was published as a book in 2014.

“Let’s use this moment to start to think about health care as a human right everywhere in the world – what a person deserves simply by virtue of being alive, not when you can afford it” Adichie told the BBC.

Every year, the BBC compiles a list of #100 women of influence in their fields of endeavor worldwide.

“This year’s 100 Women is highlighting those who are hitting “reset” – women playing their part to reinvent our society, our culture and our world” according to the BBC.

Apart from Adichie, Malala Yousafzai, the youngest-ever Nobel Peace Prize winner, Samoa’s first Female Prime Minister Fiamē Naomi Mata’afa, Professor Heidi J Larson, who heads the Vaccine Confidence Project, and Turkish writer Elif Şafak were also cited.

Afghanistan produced half of this year’s list, and the estranged wife of Bill Gates, Billionaire also made the list.

The list was also drawn from heroines from politics, arts, business, and the ordinary folks.
