FG To Declare Bandits Terrorists; To Use Tucano Aircrafts Against Criminals

0

By James Orji

Abubakar Malami, the Attorney General of the federation and Minister of Justice, said the federal government will declare bandits as terrorists in a matter of days. He said the process of designating bandits as terrorists is ongoing following a court judgment to that effect.

After this has been done, the federal government can now use maximum force against the bandits who kill, maim and abduct people for ransom in Northern part of the country. The measures include using the Tucano airplanes recently delivered to the Nigerian Armed forces by the United States of American government to attack  the criminals.

The Governor of Kaduna state, Nasir el-Rufai had on Monday advised the Buhari administration to carpet bomb the bandits in their hideouts in order to end their activities.

On November 25, a Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice Taiwo Taiwo declared the activities of bandits’ groups as acts of terrorism, following an exparte motion filed by Mohammed Abubakar, the Director of Public Prosecution, DPP seeking to proscribe the deadly activities of ‘bandits’ who have been waging a relentless war against ordinary Nigerians.

According to the court document, the federal government blamed the bandits for the killings, abductions, rapes, kidnappings in northern Nigeria.

The government further blamed the group for the growing cases of “banditry, incessant kidnappings for ransom, kidnapping for marriage, mass abductions of school children and other citizens, cattle rustling, enslavement, imprisonment, severe deprivation of physical liberty, torture, rape, sexual slavery, enforced prostitution, forced pregnancy, other forms of sexual violence, attacks and killings in communities and on commuters and wanton destruction of lives and properties in Nigeria, particularly in the North-west and North-central states in Nigeria being carried out by Yan Bindiga and Yan Ta’adda groups and other groups associated with or engaged in the same or similar activities as Yan Bindiga and Yan Ta’adda groups in Nigeria.”

“The activities of Yan Bindiga and Yan Ta’adda groups and other similar groups constitute acts of terrorism that can lead to a breakdown of public order and safety and is a threat to national security and the corporate existence of Nigeria,” the federal government said.

The court verdict, therefore, empowered the government to use maximum force against the criminals like it has done with Boko Haram and IPOB.

Speaking on the NTA Good Morning Nigeria Show on Tuesday, Malami said the final process of gazetting the bandits as terrorist in line with court judgment is already on, and will be completed in few days.

According to Malami, “the gazetting of a court order or judgement is a process but what matters fundamentally within the context of international convention is the judicial declaration and that has been obtained; the court has declared bandits, kidnappers, cattle rustlers as terrorists.

“So, with or without the gazette, what gives effect to such declaration is a judicial pronouncement but the gazette is a mere formality and it has been on and I believe within a matter of days, it will be concluded.”

Justice Taiwo had while granting the proscription order specifically held that the activities of Yan Bindiga and Yan Ta’adda bandit groups constitute acts of terrorism.

He declared the activities of Yan Bindiga and Yan Ta’adda group” and other similar groups in any part of the country as “acts of terrorism and illegality.”

The court proscribed the activities of the group as well as other similar groups in any part of Nigeria, “either in groups or as individuals by whatever names they are called.”

Justice Taiwo ruled that “any person or group of persons from participating in any manner whatsoever, in any form of activities involving or concerning the prosecution of the collective intention or otherwise of the Yan Bindiga group and the Yan Ta’adda group under any other name or platform however called or described.”

He directed the Nigerian government to publish the proscription order in the official gazette and two national newspapers.

2023: Tinubu Will Pick A Muslim Running Mate-TSG

Bola Tinubu and EFCC Case

By James Orji

The Tinubu Support Group, TSG the umbrella body of groups championing the presidential bid of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu says the assumed presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC will go ahead with a Muslim/Muslim ticket no matter the feelings of Nigerians.

Tinubu, the National Leader of the APC and a Muslim has been rumoured to favour another Muslim from the North as his running mate for his presidential bid. Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno state is said to be mostly favoured by some elements in the party to run a joint ticket with Tinubu, in the 2023 presidential election that the former Lagos helmsman has yet to make an official pronouncement.

Some Nigerians, groups including the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN has warned against a Muslim/ Muslim ticket citing the religious dichotomy of the country.

In spite of this, the Director-General of the Tinubu Support Group, Abdulmumin Jibrin, said Tinubu does not really care if his running mate in nest year’s election is of the same religion with him, a Muslim.

The former member of the House of Representatives said Nigerians would support candidates they believe can perform the presidential job.

The lawmaker from Kano and former chairman, Appropriation Committee of the House of Reps, spoke on Channels Television said Tinubu has made up his mind to take a shot at the presidency.

He said “take it to the bank” Tinubu is running. Absolutely. We have discussed with him extensively. So much is going on now behind the scene”.

“Sometimes, I even find it a bit funny when I see people saying ‘is he contesting or is he not contesting?’ The only thing that is left is just the formality of organising when he is going to express his aspiration, just to notify the public that, ‘Yes, I am going to contest.’

“But the issue of Bola Tinubu contesting is a done deal. He is going to contest the election, I can assure you that. Insha Allah, he is going to be on the ballot paper.”

On the vexed issue of Muslim/Muslim ticket, Jibrin said what should matter to Nigerians is how to elect a president that has the capacity to turn the country around, rather than laying emphasis on his religious affinity.

He said “I completely agree and understand that our country is sensitive when it comes to politics, the issue of ethnic and religious considerations. It is very serious. Nobody can sweep that under the carpet.

“But talking personally and weighing the mood of the country, I can assure you that if you give people a choice of someone who will come and improve on what we already have on ground, and revamp the economy and increase every aspect and every part of the country, people will just want to see progress. People just want to see development. For me, it doesn’t matter”.

He cited a time when David Mark and Ike Ekweremadu were President and Deputy Senate President.

“If you bring a Christian-Christian presidency or a Muslim-Muslim presidency, for me, personally, it doesn’t matter. Even within the party and my TSG, we have had this conversation,” Jibrin said.

By Tosin Olatokunbo

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has assured residents of Lagos State that the state owned train service will commence operations this year.

The governor said the state’s Blue and Red Lines trains will commence operation this year after a long delay. The take off date has been moved forward several times.

The rail line project was started by the administration of Babatunde Raji Fashola, but experienced a long delay under his successor, Akinwumi Ambode.

But speaking to journalists on Monday after a tour of the project from Ikeja to Marina, Sanwo-olu said he will deliver the rail service as promised, for train services to commence before the end of the year.

Sanwo-olu said “Our promise is on course, we believe before the end of this year, we will see trains on top of these tracks. That is our commitment but we will continue to monitor and check ourselves.

“In the last three and a half hours we have gone round to see the constructions ongoing between the Red Line and Blue Line.

“I am happy to report as you all have seen that the constructions are going on as scheduled. Despite today being a public holiday, the contractors are on sites.”

He added that “At Ebute Meta, there will be an overpass from Muritala Mohammed Road up to Apapa Road. They are launching the columns, the station is far ahead because they have completed the station.

“The Marina station is the most iconic for the Blue Line and the beams there will be launched. We have had precast beams stored at the National Art Theatre within six weeks, they should complete the launching,

“At Yaba, we wanted to make a detour into Mushin but because of the logistics of how to get into Mushin station, noting there will be an overpass and a station also at Mushin.

“At Yaba, the last time we were there, they were still excavating but right now they are working to go to the second floor. You also saw the beams and they have been given a marching order to keep to timeline.

“At the Marina Station is the most iconic for the Blue Line. All the beams are to be launched. We have had precast beams stored at the National Arts Theatre within six weeks, they should complete the launching.

Meanwhile, Governor Sanwo-olu was not specific exactly the month the state owned train operations will take off, leading to suggestions among those that have been monitoring the project, that the state government may be forced to move the timeline forward to 2023

Plot To Arrest Uzodimma’s Security Officers Fails

Hope Uzodimma

An alleged plot by those believed to be fueling insecurity, particularly kidnapping, banditry, arson and cannibalism  in Imo State ahead of January 4, 2022 Imo Stakeholders meeting got to a head on Monday with false news of the alleged arrest of the security officers attached to Governor Hope Uzodimma, a Government Spokesman has disclosed.

Governor Uzodimma, it is believed, will  use the Stakeholders meeting to expose the identities of those allegedly behind insecurity and other forms of criminality in Imo State.

According to a  release by the Governor’s Spokesperson, Oguwike Nwachuku: “This has prompted Imo citizens to become more curious to discover the identities of those undermining their peace and prosperity. Thus, the current media frenzy by both Rochas Okorocha and Uche Nwosu appears to be strengthening the notion of their culpability.”

The statement claimed that to “discredit the Government and undermine the peace which the Governor has achieved so far, as was evident in the large number of Imo people who came back home from around the world for Christmas and New Year festivities, the release said, the duo have resorted to publishing falsehood about security officers in the State Government House.”

The release said that “Their claim of the arrest and detention of a certain Shaba, whom they falsely allege to be the CSO to the Imo State Governor is strange as the Governor’s CSO is not known by the name of Shaba both officially and otherwise.  In addition, no security officer in the Governor’s security team was either arrested, or is currently unaccounted for.

“As such, the entire story can best be described as a poorly scripted fabrication aimed at misleading the unsuspecting public.”

For the avoidance of doubt, the statement said, “Okorocha and Nwosu have been specifically mentioned by suspects who are in the custody of security agents, as being sponsors of kidnapping and banditry in Imo State, using their relationship with former ex-militants to perpetrate the crimes.

“Rather than clear their names, they appear bent on using both overt and covert means to blackmail the Police High Command, which legitimately arrested Uche Nwosu.  They are also actively seeking to dent the image of the fine security officers attached to the Governor of Imo State.

“The public must be informed that the entire report is false and a failed attempt to frustrate the Imo  Stakeholders meeting taking place on Tuesday.

“The mass of Imo People, who are undoubtedly peaceful and fun loving are enjoined to discountenance the serial falsehood that continue to be churned out by the embattled duo.  The focus and direction of the Gov. Uzodimma led government, it must be emphasized, will continue to be about the wellbeing of the people of the State, no matter what it takes.”

OPEC: Barkindo Bows Out, Al-Ghais Takes Over as Secretary General

Bankindo and Haitham Al-Ghais

By Uche Mbah

The Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) has elected a new Secretary General. He is the Kuwaiti candidate, Haitham Al-Ghais. He replaces Nigeria’s Sanusi Barkindo.

Barkindo’s tenure ends in July.

Al-Ghais was elected at a special meeting convened via  video-conference on Monday, January 3, 2022.

In a statement Monday,

The International Oil Cartel invoked article 28 of their statute to back up the decision to replace Barkindo.

“In accordance with Article 28 of the OPEC Statute and in the application of the procedure decided at the 182nd Meeting of the Conference on 1 December 2021, the Conference decided by acclamation to appoint Mr Haitham Al-Ghais of Kuwait as Secretary-General of the Organization, with effect from 1 August 2022, for a period of three years,” the statement reads.

“Mr Al-Ghais, a veteran of the Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC) and Kuwait’s OPEC Governor from 2017 to June 2021, currently serves as Deputy Managing Director for International Marketing at KPC. He Chaired the Joint Technical Committee (JTC) of the Declaration of Cooperation (DoC) in 2017 and subsequently served as a Member of the JTC until June 2021.”

OPEC, expressed appreciation to the outgoing Secretary General, Barkindo, who is rounding up his second term.

“A long-serving veteran of Nigeria’s oil industry and OPEC, Mr Barkindo has been instrumental in expanding OPEC’s historical efforts to support sustainable oil market stability through enhanced dialogue and cooperation with many energy stakeholders, including the landmark DoC since its inception in December 2016. These efforts are widely credited with helping to stabilize the global oil market since the unprecedented market downturn related to the COVID-19 pandemic, and providing a platform for recovery,” the statement said.

“Before being appointed Secretary-General, Mr Barkindo held a number of key roles at OPEC between 1986 and 2010, including as Acting Secretary-General in 2006. He is known internationally for helping to produce the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Kyoto Protocol as the leader of Nigeria’s technical delegation to the UN negotiations in 1991. He has remained a key contributor to the UNFCCC process, including most recently at the 26th Conference of Parties (COP) meeting in Glasgow in October and November 2021.”

Tension In Imo As Governor Named, Shames Insecurity Sponsors

0
Hope Uzodinma

By Charles Igbo

Imo State is pregnant. It would deliver today, January 4, unless the Midwife says for safe delivery, let there be a delay in delivery. His assistants say the delivery will go on as scheduled.

The midwife is the Governor of the State, Senator Hope Uzodinma. Many people think he would abort the delivery. But, perhaps, they should perish the thought.

Uzodinma’s Commissioner for Information and  Strategy, Declan Emelumba, on Tuesday, January 3, confirmed the Governor would go  ahead.

Many people urge otherwise.  They fear it could go awry. They think it could be controversial. And that its delivery may not bring unadulterated joy. It could breed bad blood, and a couple of other unpleasant consequences.

What is the pregnancy all about.

Buffeted by insecurity which  has hardly given the Governor a breathing space since his assumption of office, almost, he has decided to, as they say, “take the bull by the horn.”  He insists he would name and shame those who, allegedly, are sponsoring insecurity in the State.

For months, the Governor has held the view that the unprecedented insecurity in the State is a product of a well laid out plan by some politicians to make the State ungovernable for him. They taunt  when any insecurity occurs.  They present the State in the worst colors ever. And advice people to keep off.

But for God and the Governor’s tenacity in, and aggressive fight against insecurity, the State would have become ungovernable.

People were being killed on everyday basis. In the past few months, four Traditional  Rulers were killed – two, victims of kidnappers, two others, victims of gunmen who inexplicably opened fire on them at Njaba Local Government Area Headquarters where they were meeting.

It came to a climax a couple  of weeks ago when Security Operatives discovered camps of kidnappers where they not only killed victims, but engaged in cannibalism.

They were roasting their victims and eating their dead bodies.

When the camps were busted, a number of them, allegedly, 15, some reports say 30, were arrested.

The Governor’s resolve to name and shame is a consequence of the alleged confessions made by some of them. Emelumba says the Government has hard, irrefutable evidence to nail them.

A couple of months ago, Uzodinma had said he would name names. He did not. But the recent arrests, and the sheer savagery and atrocities discovered at the camps pushed him.

Just before Christmas when he addressed Civil Servants where he made them happy by announcing he would pay “13th month”, Uzodinma disclosed that he would name sponsors of insecurity in Imo on January  3, 2022, at the 6th Stakeholders meeting. He was to shift the date to January 4.

Many people think he will not do it, that he was just talking. But the incident of December 26, where Uche Nwosu, a son-in-law to former Governor Rochas Okorocha, who was a Governorship candidate for the Action Alliance, in 2019, after Uzodinma “snatched” the APC ticket from him, was arrested in the Church showed how serious both the Police and the Government had become. Nwosu, unconfirmed reports say, was arrested over the confessions made by a number of, alleged, bad boys arrested recently.

He was released after hours of interrogation. But January 4, is the D-day. People will be named and shamed.

Commissioner  Declan Emelumba, disclosed the Governor’s resolve in a statement in Owerri on Monday at a Press Statement.

Emelumba: “The Governor will use the occasion of the 6th edition of the Imo Stakeholders Forum to name those who are sponsors and financiers of insecurity in the state.”

According to the Commissioner: “The Government is in possession of crack evidence of the involvement of those responsible for insecurity in the State.”

Who will the Governor name? Many, especially, the opposition, think his political  opponents are the target. They say the confessions are fake. Already, Okorocha has accused him of trying hard to implicate him and members of his family.

However, not a few people think the Governor should not do it. They say he should not be the one to announce it. That the announcement should come from  Security Operatives. Said a source:

“Anybody the Governor names should prepare and go to court. The person should sue the Government.

Only the Court can declare one guilty or not.”

Today is here already.

Attempt To Abduct Chairman, Imo Traditional Council, Raze Palace, Foiled; One Killed

0
Okeke - His Roral Highness

By Charles Igbo

Imo State was saved a huge embarrassment on Monday, January 3, 2022, when an attempt by gunmen to abduct the Chairman of the Imo Traditional Council, His Royal Highness Eze (Dr) E.E. Okeke was foiled by a team of Policemen. His Palace was, also, to be set on fire.

The abductors/ assailants arrived the Eze’s Palace at about 1.00am  But they met a very stiff resistance from the Police, who have been deployed to guard Palaces, supported by Vigilantes.

Eze Okeke is the Traditional Ruler of Amaifeke in the Orlu Local Government Area, the community where former Governor of the State, Chief Achike Udenwa, hails from.

According to a release signed on behalf of the Imo State Police Command by its Spokesman, Michael Abattam, a strategy deployed by the Commissioner of Police to monitor Palaces, in the heat of the abduction of Traditional Rulers in the State, hit the bull’s eye when the rampaging gunmen were confronted by a team of Policemen deployed to the Community.

In the ensuing fierce gun battle, one of the gunmen was killed, while others escaped with various degrees of injuries.

Abattam: “Sequel to the recent attacks on the Palaces of some Traditional Rulers in the State by unknown gunmen,  the Commissioner of Police, CP Rabiu Hussaini, psc, in order to curb this  menace deployed the Command’s Tactical Teams to patrol every community in the State, while closely monitoring the Palaces of Traditional Rulers.

“Today the 3rd of January, 2022, at about 0100hrs, the strategy paid off, as the Command’s Tactical Teams,  working in synergy with Vigilante Group in the area, were able to repel the attack/attempt to set the Palace of Eze Imo, HRH, Eze Dr E.E. Okeke on fire by men suspected to be men of the proscribed IPOB/ESN group at Ezioha Amaifeke in Orlu LGA of Owerri, Imo State.

“The hoodlums, in their numbers, besieged the Palace of the Traditional Ruler armed with assorted weapons but were subdued by the superior firepower of the Command’s Tactical Teams, and in the process, one of the hoodlums was neutralized, while others fled into the bush with bullet injuries.

“On searching the body of the neutralized bandit, several charms were seen tied round his waist.

“Other items also recovered include:

*One ID Card

* One locally made IMPROVISED EXPLOSIVE DEVICE

*Five bottles containing fuel

*Cash of #20,000.00 (twenty thousand Naira), only

*One Pump Action Gun with four live cartridges.”

Imo Traditional Rulers and their Palaces have been the targets of gunmen. In the past two months, five of them have been kidnapped. Out of the five, two were killed by their abductors.

Just before the abductions, two Traditional Rulers were shot dead when gunmen stormed the venue of their meeting at the Headquarters of the Njaba Local Government Area.

The attempt to abduct Eze Okeke and set his Palace on fire came on the eve of Governor Uzodinma’s resolve to name and shame those he, alleges,  were implicated in the sponsoring of insecurity in the State.

2023: Anyim Will Restore Nigeria’s Glory – Governor Ikpeazu

0

The Governor of Abia State, Okezie Ikpeazu has described Anyim Pius Anyim, a front line contender to the Nigeria’s  Presidential seat,  under the auspices of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, as one of the best for the job.

Ikpeazu stated this, January 2, when Anyim paid him a New Year visit at his country home, Ngwa, Abia State.

He said that based on Anyim’s pedigree as former Senate president, former Secretary to the government of the Federation, “he is one Nigerian who is eminently qualified to lead the country and restore Nigeria to the path of glory.”

These roles he had played at different times, Ikpeazu recalls, place him at a vantage position to understand the challenges of the country and how to solve them better.

The Governor, however, advised Anyim not to forget to market the enviable credentials which he would bring to bear to the Presidency of Nigeria as an Igbo man, saying, an average Igboman has the tendency of turning a desert into a fertile land once given an opportunity.

Rhetorically, he said, “The challenges in Sambisa forest will easily become a business opportunity for an Igbo man as he would quickly create an economic heaven that will even disarm  the terrorists.

Anyim Pius Anyim
Anyim Pius Anyim

He further advised Anyim to work hard to restore the trust and confidence of other segments of the country on the ability and sincerity of Igboman to govern the country as a Nigerian. Reiterating that the president of Nigeria of Igbo extraction will surely bring about economic growth, create job opportunities, bring unity and  national cohesion.

According to him,the Igbo presence everywhere in Nigeria is a true reflection that they are indeed the real face of the country. Ikpeazu who spoke in the presence of some of his cabinets and members of the state Assembly reassures Anyim that Abia is in the journey together with him.

Responding, Anyim told the Governor and some of his Cabinet members that since they have all agreed that the president of Nigeria of Igbo extraction will bring prosperity to the country  that he has, therefore, come to solicit their support, saying, the Nigerian project is a collective one. He assures them that he is going to the presidency to work for Nigeria which will include the interests of the South, the East and the North.

Tofa: Northern Groups Postpone Security Summit

Bashir Tofa

By Uche Mbah

A Coalition of Northern Groups, CNG, has shelved its plan to hold a Security Summit as a mark of respect for the dead Kano politician, Bashir Tofa.

The Group’s National Coordinator, Balarabe Rufai, announced this  while briefing journalists in Abuja  Monday.

Tofa was slated as the Chairman of the Summit before his sudden death.

According to Rufai, the late Tofa was billed to chair the occasion which was earlier slated for the 5th and 6th of January 2022 in the Federal Capital Territory.

“On behalf of the entire CNG family and affiliates, we express a deep sense of sorrow over the death of this elder statesman and mentor, who was a one-time presidential candidate”, Rufai said.

“The CNG owes immeasurable gratitude to the late Bashir Tofa whose leadership, sacrifice, statesmanship, patriotism and unwavering commitment to the interests of the people of Northern Nigeria, and citizens of Nigeria as a whole has few parallels

“We mourn the passing of this man from whose life and works we have drawn inspiration and we must strive, in all we do, to live with the personal and social values and standards he lived and set for himself.

“The late Tofa was a passionate believer of the organic links between generations who was always available for young people.

“The CNG in particular, the North and Nigeria generally have certainly lost a great statesman, but the youth lost a mentor, guardian, living history and an embodiment of all the exemplary qualities young Northerners should strive to achieve.

“As a mark of respect and with a grieving heart, we wish to announce the inadvertent postponement of the planned Pan Northern Security Summit scheduled for 5th and 6th of January to a date to be announced soon. The late Bashir Othman Tofa was to be the chairman of the occasion.”

“We use this medium to sincerely apologise to our supporters and other dignitaries who had cleared their diaries to be with us at this very important pan-Northern security summit.

“In the meantime, we pray the Almighty Allah to overlook his shortcomings, forgive his gentle soul, admit him to Jannah and grant his family the fortitude to bear the loss

“We also wish to condole with the convener of the Northern Elders Forum, Professor Ango Abdullahi; the Chairman of Arewa Consultative Forum, Chief Audu Ogbeh; the BOT Chairman of Coalition of Northern Groups, Dr Nastura Ashir Sharrif; and the entire CNG family over the loss of this great man”, he concluded.
