CBN: How Emefiele Escaped Buhari’s Sack; Problem Not Over

For many hours, the mobile telephone of Godwin Emefiele, the Central Bank of Nigeria Governor rang repeatedly yesterday, while he was attending the World Economic Forum, WEF in Davos, Switzerland. Well wishers from Nigeria had called him to confirm whether he has been sacked from office.

The magazine learnt that Emefiele left the country on Tuesday immediately after the Monetary Policy committee, MPC, meeting in Abuja, with the assurance from power brokers  in the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC that all was well. So, he was surprised, as he later told some family members and friends, of reports that he has been sacked by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Some newspapers report (not The Source ) had on Wednesday, claimed that the CBN governor has been removed from office, citing some reasons, including his presidential ambition.

Indeed, the magazine learnt that some close aides of the President were shocked by Emefiele’s Presidential  ambition, and had told the President that what the CBN Governor is doing poses an ethical problems for the administration.

But the CBN Governor is said to be very close to the President’s family  who still wants him to remain in office “despite his errors”, a reliable presidential sources said.

Emefiele is among those who recently obtained the APC presidential nomination form to contest next year’s presidential election. He even went to court to challenge his eligibility to contest the highest office in the country, and had recently said God will determine whether he will contest or not.

Others have cited the economic situation in the country among others as reason for President Buhari to sack him. For instance, a pro- Buhari group, Nigeria First Movement, NFM had demanded Emefiele’s removal, citing his “final nail in the country’s already doomed economy,” as his major sin.

The pro-Buhari group which said the economy has been wobbling since the re-appointment of Emefiele by the president, vowed to mobilise over 200 other pro-Buhari groups against the apex bank governor if he failed to resign.

NFM said, “We are ready to champion the call for Emefiele’s removal by staging a one-week protest that could potentially cripple economic activities in Abuja. We’re also ready to mobilise over 200 other pro-Buhari groups across the globe in the ‘mother of all protests’ that would hold simultaneously in Abuja, Lagos and London against the nation’s poor economic posture.

“Emiefele played a pivotal role in the collapse of the economy since his appointment as the CBN chief and before his arrival, the economy was said to be one of the fastest growing in the world. Shortly after his reappointment in 2019, Emefiele announced a five-year plan that targets double-digit growth in one of Africa’s largest economies.

“His approach to policy implementation, however, has left many in doubt, raising questions on how his key policy moves, especially in the context of management of the exchange rate, benefits the economy, and the naira he sought to protect.

“For more than a year now, nothing has been done. The CBN under Emefile has shirked its primary responsibility of ensuring price stability and has embraced a more developmental role, in the hopes of naira stability.

“The regulatory bank’s aggressive lending policy has been called into question as well, causing some concerns over the bank chief’s stewardship of the banking sector. The CBN is forcing banks to lend, and penalising non-lenders. These are shareholders’ funds being deployed via fiat.”

Therfore, when the rumour mill was agog on Wednesday that he has been shown the way out, not a few jubilated that, at least, the President has listened to them.

But responding to the rumoured sack, the CBN said such only exists in the imagination of peddlers of the report.

According to the apex Bank’s spokesman, Osita Nwanisobi, the report is untrue.

“I also heard the same way you heard it. Honestly, to me I’m not aware of that development .The Governor left to attend the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland immediately after the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) briefing” Nwanibosi told The Nation.

Meanwhile, Femi Falana, a human rights activist and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN has disclosed that President Buhari lacks the power to sack the CBN Governor without the approval of the Senate.

But analysts of the issue also pointed out that In 2014, former President Goodluck Jonathan removed Sanusi Lamido Sanisi as CBN Governor without seeking the Senate approval.

NYSC: Senator Stella Oduah Threatens DG: “Retract Statement In 48 Hrs Or Face Me In Court”

Former Aviation Minister, Senator Stella Oduah, has asked the Director General of the National Youth Service Corp, NYSC, to retract a statement credited to him concerning her NYSC and discharge certificate.

News of alleged forgery of the NYSC certificate by the Senator made headlines on Wednesday, after it was confirmed by the NYSC that she absconded without completing her Service after the Orientation.

But Senator Oduah is angry. She says she has been defamed.

In a letter she sent to the DG, titled “48 hours Notice To Retract Your Statement A s Contained In Your Letter Dated 24TH May 2022 Ref No. NYSC/DHQ/PPRU/783/VOL III”, and signed by  Ezennia Nonso Chukwudebe,

Media/Publicity, Oduah described the statement as “reckless” and “irresponsible”.

Her letter reads:

“Our attention has been called to your scandalous letter referenced above in which you acknowledged that Sen. Stella Oduah was mobilized for Youth Service in 1982 and served in the Lagos Orientation camp but then concluded that she “absconded”  and was not issued a certificate of discharge.

“That reckless statement which we consider grossly irresponsible no doubt suggests that it was procured from you for political considerations in favour of Sen. Oduah’s political detractors. We are shocked that you condescended so low to make such false and unverified conclusions which is damaging to her character and image.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Sen. Oduah’s NYSC place of primary assignment was the popular Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA). When a similar allegation was made by her political contenders in 2017, NECA issued a letter dated 11th January 2017 Ref No: NECA/SELA/H4 confirming that she carried out her NYSC primary assignment with them.  Find attached a copy of that letter for reference as well as a photograph of our client as a youth corper

“That issue also attended litigation and she has a court judgment in her favour in the case of Chinedu Emmanuel Emeka v. Princess Stella Oduah , EPT/AWK/SEN/13/2019

“Ordinarily, one need not be bothered about any other similar allegations in the light of the aforesaid judgment and the fact that NYSC is not a constitutional qualification to hold any public office in Nigeria, but your statement has, to a large extent, defamed her

“In your exact words, ‘after the orientation course, she absconded’ It is curious how a person who had participated in all NYSC activities at the Orientation Camp can be said to have ‘absconded’ because she left for her place of primary assignment as it was routine. It is either you chose to ignore your record or your office has failed to keep proper records.

“You are by this letter given 48 hours to retract your statement failing which legal actions shall be commenced against you.”

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, is in trouble. It is having a run. The crisis within the Party has been brewing for months. It has now hit the roof in the past few days.

A number of the big wigs are leaving the party. And there seems to be no stopping them.

On Wednesday May 25, the Party was shaken to its foundation when Peter Obi, one of its Presidential candidates, and a former two-time Governor of Anambra State, made public his resignation from the Party.

Before Obi’s resignation became public through his resignation letter dated May 24, to the National Chairman of the Party, Dr Iyorchia Ayu, Obi had quit the Party at the Ward level in a letter dated May 20, to his Ward Chairman in Agulu 2, Anambra State.

While the Party was trying to grapple with Obi’s exit, and the millions of votes it would cost it, especially, those of the Youths who adore Obi, Muktari Shehu Shagari, a former Minister, and son of former President Shehu Shagari dumped the Party too.

In a Press Statement announcing his resignation on May 25, Shagari, put the blame on the leadership of the Party. He said the party has sold its soul to money. It has sold its soul to the highest bidders only. “The Party has become a Party of the highest bidder”, he said.

He also had some words for his State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, a Presidential aspirant. “It is most disheartening that the Governor of my State in particular has proven to be a  man who has no regards to integrity, honor and excellence.”

Shehu Shagari’s statement reads:

“I wish to bring to your notice that I, Mukhtari Shehu Shagari has from today ceased to be a member of the Peoples Democratic Party.

“This hard decision is as a result of the series of betrayals that I have suffered in the hands of a Party that deceitfully claims to be a bastion of democracy but has instead become a party of the highest bidder without considering my labor, commitment, sacrifice, investments and service to the Party since 1998.

“Apart from my numerous sacrifices and service to the Party, the so-called Peoples Democratic Party has no reward system regardless of one’s loyalty and faithfulness. It is my conviction that the ideals of the founding fathers of the Peoples Democratic Party have been completely eroded and is not worthy to be called a Democratic Party.

“It is most disheartening that the Governor of my State in particular has proven to be a man who does not keep to his words, a man who has no regards to integrity, honor and excellence. It is also sad and unfortunate that the PDP in Sokoto is dead and buried during his tenure as the Governor of Sokoto State because of his draconian, slippery, cunning, crafty and insincere style of leadership.

“The PDP has unfortunately become a “cash and carry” Party for the highest bidder so as to serve the interest of a minority few who have hijacked the body and soul of the Party.

“While I enjoin my supporters to remain calm, I shall In a few days time make my next steps known.”

In Abia State, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, Minority Leader of the PDP, could also be on his way out of the  Party. Abaribe is being wooed by the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA.

On Thursday, the leadership of APGA in the State, paid him a visit in his home to woo him to immediately join APGA.

Earlier, Abaribe, a former Deputy Governor of the State, had withdrawn from the Governoship race. He has also been pushed out of  the Senate in 2023. The State Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, who comes from the same zone with him has picked up the PDP  ticket for the Zone.

Elsewhere, in Enugu State, the words in the streets are that Senator Ike Ekweremadu, two-time former Deputy Senate President, who suddenly withdrew from the Governorship race, is also on his way out of the Party.

The PDP ticket went to Peter Mba, a member of the Senator Chimaroke Nnamani Political Dynasty in Enugu, which member Ekweremadu, also, was.

For the PDP, the situation couldn’t have been worse – heading to a General election.

2023: APC Dashes Jonathan’s, Others Hope On Consensus

The National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, Abdullahi Adamu, has ruled out the adoption of consensus as a modality to pick the party’s presidential flag bearer for next year’s election.

The party presently has 28 aspirants jostling to represent the party in the 2023 presidential election.

Top among them are Vice president Yemi Osinbajo, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Rotimi Amaechi, Governors Dave Umahi, Kayode Fayemi and Yahaya Bello, of Ebonyi, Ekiti and Kogi States respectively; Ogbonaya Onu, the immediate past Minister for Science and Technology, amongst others.

While some of the aspirants have been traversing the country, in the last two months, trying to convince the delegates on the need to pick them as APC flag bearer, some presidential hopefuls have simply relaxed, with the hope that they will be picked on consensus.

Sources in the APC have informed the magazine that such aspirants are banking on President Muhammadu Buhari support to emerge as consensus candidate for the party.

“The way some of them are behaving seems they are awaiting the president to give a marching order to the party to pick them as the candidate. Obviously, they have failed, because nothing of such will happen, they can see that the party will not foist any candidate on the party,” a source in the party told the magazine on Thursday.

The source spoke on the back of suggestions that former President Goodluck Jonathan has been picked by some entrenched interests in the party to be the party’s candidate in 2023 “on President Buhari’s approval, not knowing that the party is bigger than a single individual,” the source said.

The former President had obtained the party’s nomination form for N100 million, but there are still doubts on whether he will contest or not. Jonathan is yet to officially dump the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, even though he has not attended the party’s meeting for sometime.

The meeting that the former President held with APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Adamu, a couple of weeks in Abuja, fuelled the rumour that the party is planning to adopt him as its candidate.

But speaking to journalists on Thursday, Adamu, who on his part, recently emerged as the chairman based on consensus, said nothing of such is being planned by the party. He said all the 28 aspirants will go through the primary slated for Sunday, May 29.

He said the best among the aspirants will emerge the APC candidate.

On whether the party has adopted consensus, Adamu said, “There is no truth in what you said. The reason is that the chairmanship seat is not the same as that of the tussle for the Presidency of the country. You can’t even compare the two of them. That question does not arise.

“However the party has laid down its rules and regulations for the aspirants. We would scrutinise all of them based on our guidelines to be sure we pick the right candidate for the party.

“You can’t stop a party stalwart from contesting election or aspiring for the Presidency. It is their rights and we are happy for them. There is nothing wrong for anybody aspiring for the exalted seat of the Presidency. It is God that decides who gets what.

“Once God makes up his mind and says this is who He wants, that is what we are praying for. We have 28 aspirants for the presidential ticket and everybody knows that all of them cannot get the ticket.

“If it is God’s wish, they all can even be president of the country one after the other. Ours is to ensure justice in the choice of who emerges candidate of the party. That does not mean we are perfect. But we pray we do the right thing.”

Meanwhile, the magazine learnt , from other APC sources that efforts are still ongoing to ensue that some aspirants dropped their ambitions.

One of such meetings was the one President Buhari had with APC governors on Wednesday, where the party failed to agree on the issue.

“We are still on the matter, we still have three days to the convention. We are hoping that all the various interests will come together on the matter,” a top APC source said.

This is the decisive week in the emergence of presidential candidates for the major parties. The traversing of the country on consultations is coming to a close.  The scramble among what is clearly a multitude of aspirants for the top job is about to draw to a close.

For Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, this is the final stretch in what has been a spirited and methodical journey to party pre -eminence and candidacy for the 2023 presidential election.

This is a race in which Osinbajo has emerged as heads and shoulders above the other contestants both in his party and the opposition PDP.  Literally, this season of presidential aspirations can be described as a contest between Osinbajo and the rest both in character and content.

Apart from the multiple advantages conferred by his vantage position as Buhari’s deputy, Osinbajo’s imminent victory is largely the product of his intrinsic personal leadership attributes. His preparations as an outstanding attorney, distinguished intellectual and experienced public officer have been noted  by many observers. Hardly have we had such sterling combination in previous presidential contests.

Osinbajo brought to his presidential aspiration a certain structured approached. He operated an informed organisation driven by knowledge, up to date data on key national challenges and cutting edge methods. Osinbajo’s team of young modern and IT savvy staffers worked extremely hard from a position of knowledge of all nooks of the country. They know every ward, village and local government.

In his consultation tours of the country, Yemi Osinbajo once again showed his detribalized essence. He cross crossed the nation and wherever he went , he was warmly received as an all -Nigerian hero. His various engagements on national issues showed the same even handed knowledgeable slant that have since marked him out as an uncommon leader. In every way , he stepped forward to address the most urgent needs of Nigerians.

Within his ruling party, Osinbajo has stood out. He has previewed  a non disruptive sense of continuity and yet a decisive departure from the less acceptable aspects of the Buhari legacy. Yet he has indicated an unmistakable sense of direction away from the current challenges bedeviling the nation.

From his fellow south west counterpart and former boss, Bola Tinubu, he stands out as a less egregious and more moderating leader. In contrast to the more impulsive and temperamental former Transportation Minister, Rotimi Amaechi, Osinbajo is a more measured , sedate, more calculated and systematic leader. In contrast with the Senate President whose presidential aspiration is more of a regional afterthought, Osinbajo represents no faction, no sect and no region in a political terrain steeped in divisive theologies.

At this stage, Osinbajo stands up close to emerging as the candidate of the APC. As we stand literally at the finishing line of the party primaries,  the APC is faced with a choice that ought to be clear and obvious. For the first time, a party is blessed to have an aspirant who has not only the on the job experience but also the combined attributes that the nation needs at this difficult moment.  It is clearly Osinbajo’s hour.

OPINION: Obi’s Resignation: A Fight Against Delegated Corruption On Behalf of Nigerians

Just about two weeks ago I wrote an article titled; ” Nigeria: A Nation At The Mercy Of Political Party Delegates”.*  Where I established that the two leading political parties in Nigeria; APC and PDP as institutions cannot deliver the hope and yearnings of Nigerian electorates for a new Nigeria. That the system are constricpted against the evolution of productive leadership.

PDP, we were informed by APC in the build up to 2015 elections, that they spread corruption. Unfortunately, we have witnessed first hand the ground gaining of corruption and the consolidation of non state actors’ hold on the jugular of our nation like never before!

I made definite assertions and offered some pieces of advice, some of which are; “If I were a delegate of APC, I won’t shift support away from Osinbajo for a 100 million delegates’ package from any Aspirant. His only challenge, will be how to triumph through the lies and propaganda that his party has become in public perspective, going forward to general elections…

I went on to say: “to the delegates in PDP, it is quite unbelievable that any sane mind will be confused at making a choice for their party. Nigeria’s public system is a destroyer of merit and an enabler of corruption!

Worse in this system, are Customs Service and others like it, where slush has damaged the values of officers in the system. It is therefore incomprehensible that a debate will even take place at deciding who will be a better President between Obi, who as governor of Anambra, made an investment on behalf of his state from which the state is still earning income and Atiku, who as Vice President, supervised the sales of Aluminum Smelting Company, an investment of 2.5 billion dollars for 250 million dollars!…

Why we are still hoping that APC delegates will in the understanding of the time we are in give ticket to the likes of Osinbajo, Bakare against those who are prepared to buy Nigeria to rule her. Obi has finally interpreted the body language of delegates in PDP and has taken a bow from the party. With the allegation of change of delegates’ list from Anambra state, it will be ridiculous for him to have stayed to contest against a principal he gave the respect of not visiting his state, Adamawa, during his consultations with delegates across the country! To know that such individuals lack decorum and will result to political brigandage in Obi’s state and he still continues in the race would have been a betrayal of that thing for which he is being celebrated, intelligence!

I further affirmed that: “the exigencies of the time has taken this contest away from the likes of Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his compatriot, Atiku Abubakar, the work to be done needs a younger, intelligent and competent personality with strength of character for leadership”!

If party delegates are lost to this reality, Nigerians are not! At no time in our political history has the awareness to break from political culture of cash and carry been this overwhelming!

Osinbajo will have a huge political marketing to do in case he wins the primary. He is no doubt the best in the race for APC, but a good product may find it difficult to be sold from a shop noted for fake products; I said.

Obi has been fantastic thus far, he has sold himself very well keeping to issues.

Our appeal is to the delegates of the devil and the deep blue sea to give us the best of their demons. As the saying goes, a known devil is better than an unknown angel!

The truth is, any disappointment in this regard may see the emergence of a new party in power. That new party will be the one presently positioned to harvest the fruit of a mismanaged APC and PDP primaries which seems inevitable!

May I plead with all party delegates to make the best aspirant their candidate, so that at the general election, the choice will be made from among their bests, I finally submitted.

Obi, like Osibajo is a good product on a bad shelf. This move is sacrosanct, to give a good product a deserving shelf life and value. It is left to Osibajo to stay with APC or take his value to a corresponding shelf!

Obi, in his resignation letter addressed to PDP National Chairman, left no one in doubt of his intention to still contest 2023 elections on the terms and conditions he had championed during his political consultations when he stated; “our national challenges are deep-seated and require that we each make profound sacrifices towards rescuing our country. My commitment to rescuing Nigeria remains firm, even if the route differs.

Obi’s exit from PDP was a thought through, legendary step, APC boat will no doubt be rocked by the high-handedness of the cabal and their proxy in power and the fallout of that will obviously be harvest in the alliance Obi will be building in the next few days. A day advantage in politics can equal years of efforts if strategically utilized! One thing this season will be remembered for is that when the 3rd force was a mirage, Obi made it a miracle. Win or lose, our political architecture is finally re-designed. May I join all true nation builders to wish Peter Obi well going forward to *2023.

Wike Ditches Associates, Picks Civil Servant As Successor; Says Nothing Anybody Can Do About It

Political associates of Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, are in shock. A number of them had thought one of them stood a chance with him. Each of them thought he could be his choice as successor.

So, they worshipped him. They followed him about. They were at his beck and call. A number of them.

At the end, however, Wike disappointed them.

At the Governorship Primaries held in Porthacourt on Wednesday, May 25, Wike picked a Civil Servant to succeed him.

The preparation was easy and meticulous.The Civil Servant, Siminiliayi Fubara, was the State’s Accountant General. Not a Politician. To prepare him for the task ahead, Wike asked him to retire from office. He did.

On the day of the Primaries, there were no protests. It went smoothly. The others could only cry in the rain. They had no courage to complain publicly.

The reason, according to the the allegation in the State is that, it was the Governor who bought the Governorship forms for all the PDP Gobernorship. aspirants.  The only deviant amongst them, Farah Dagogo, a Member of the House of Representatives,  who bought the Forms by himself is in Police custody. He neither took part in the screening, nor in the Primaries.

The Primaries took place at the Obi Wali Cultural Centre. Most delegates did the Governor’s bidding. They knew where his heart was. When the Chairman of the Electoral Committee, Professor Walter Mbotu,  announced the results, it was no surprise.

Fubara had  a landslide victory. He scored a total of 721 votes out of 898 votes cast. The immediate past Commissioner for Finance, Isaac Kamalu,  Wike’s alleged plan B, scored 86 votes. Other contestants didn’t matter. A  couple of them scored less than ten votes. One of them, a former Chairman of the Party, Felix Obuah, scored only two votes.

However, a number of the aspirants, including Obuah,  chose not to show-up. They already knew what was afoot. Others who were absent include:  Tammy Danagogo, former Secretary  to the State Government, Austin Opara, a former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Senators Thompson Sekibo and Lee Maeba.

While accepting his victory, Fubara was lost for words. “I don’t even know what to say. I wish I had prepared 20 years for this. All I can say is that victory for Fubara is victory for Rivers PDP and victory for Rivers State.”

Wike was his usual self: “There is nothing anybody can do about it. We have gotten a candidate, and everybody has to work to support the course.”

Said a Political Analyst on why the Governor easily had his way: “They sold their soul. The piper dictates the tune of the music. He bought the Forms for them, so their mouths are sealed.”

Fubara is from Opobo, a riverine area of the State.

The riverine Rivers had been denied the Office of the Governor in the past 16 years.

Lagos 2023: Jandor Emerges PDP Governorship Candidate

Lead Missioner of the Lagos4Lagos Movement, Olajide Adediran, popularly known as Jandor, has emerged as the People Democratic Party, PDP, Candidate for the Lagos Governorship Election in Lagos State.

At the PDP Primary Election held at the Haven Event Center in Lagos, four aspirants stepped down from the race.

Six Aspirants initially entered for the governorship ticket of the party – Adediran, Adedeji Doherty, Rhodes Gbadebo, Ade Dosunmu, David Kolawole, and Otunba Jimi Karmal.

Those who withdrawn from  are: Adedeji Doherty, Rhodes Gbadebo, Ade Dosunmu and Otunba Jimi Karmal.

Jandor polled  679 Votes, while Dakova polled 20 votes. 20 votes were voided.

Addressing the delegates before voting started, Jandor thanked the aspirants that stepped down, saying that all of them were qualified to govern Lagos.

He said: “I thank my colleagues who stepped down. I acknowledge their sacrifices of keeping the hope of PDP alive before my arrival. My aspiration is to rescue Lagos. I am only fortunate to be one of the last men standing.”

Describing the event as the beginning of emancipation of Lagos, he said: ” If you give me your votes, it will not just be a PDP ticket, but a ticket for the soul of Lagos.”

Accepting defeat, Dakova congratulated Jandor and promised to support him and take Lagos from the APC.

Dakova said Lagos has been in bondage and he will cooperate with Jandor to make Lagos better than Abuja, he said.

Addressing the crowd after he was declared the winner, Jandor promised to use the ticket to unite Lagos PDP so that it could win Lagos governorship in 2023.

“This ticket is for the total emancipation of Lagos. It is a ticket that will produce the first independent governor of Lagos,” he noted.

He commended the electoral committee for a job well done and called party members and stakeholders to get to work as they have a difficult task ahead.
