Missing Engineers: Ebonyi Government Must Do More, Says Intersociety

The International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law, INTERSOCIETY, Monday accused the Ebonyi State Government of not doing enough to trace missing Site Engineers in the State.

Recall that five Site Engineers in Effium, in the Ohaukwu Local Government Area of the State got missing while on official duties.

The Engineers belong to a Consulting Engineering Firm, Nelan Consultants.

On November 3, 2021, they were deployed to a road project in the town to supervise the Abakiliki Ring Road project but inexplicably  went missing.

In a statement signed by Emeka Umeagbalasi, Chairman of Intersociety, and three other executives, the non-governmental organisation noted that 90 days have elapsed since the disappearance of the engineers but there appears to be no headway in the investigations .

The statement was titled: “Police, Government Of Ebonyi Dangerously Covering Up Abduction And Disappearance Of Five NELAN Engineers.”

The statement read in part:

“The present Government of Ebonyi State has been responsible for continued abduction and disappearance of the five NELAN Field Engineers since 3rd November 2021 at the construction site of the AfDB funded $150m Ebonyi Ring Road Phase 2 Project located at Effium in Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

“Their high profile abduction and disappearance have lasted for almost three months or ninety days-with nothing concrete coming out of same. While the authorities of the Nigeria Police Force have continued to chase shadows including wastage of public funds and dissipation of much energy on irrelevancies and frivolities, the Government of Ebonyi State is busy dictatorially distracting the public and diverting their attention and has appeared to be exploiting possible loopholes to escape complicity in furtherance of clear abdication of its constitutional and statutory responsibilities.

“This is to the extent that the reaction of the State Government issued on 21st Dec 2021 was filled with contradictions and self indictments and failed to address the main issues till date.”

Demanding for a proper investigation, the release added, “The Investigative Findings under demand must include the whereabouts or locations of the abducted and disappeared Engineers, whether they are still alive or killed in captivity by their abductors/captors, why they were abducted and disappeared, who and who was responsible for abducting and disappearing them, the whereabouts or locations of their abductees or slayers (whether in custody or facing investigation/prosecution or still at large), who procured them to perpetrate the dastardly act (state actors or troublesome non-state actors?) and who and who has been aiding and abetting their heinous act. Such investigative findings or their highlights must be weekly made public by the DIG-FCID, joined by the CP of Ebonyi State Police Command and ACP/DCP in charge of the State CID.

“The Ebonyi State Government and the present leadership of the Nigeria Police Force are strongly reminded that crimes have no expiring dates to be investigated and prosecuted and not even the ‘immunity of office’ can stop same.”

Ekiti State Police Command on Monday confirmed that 98 suspected political armed thugs were arrested by soldiers at the border town between the state and Osun.

They were nabbed early Wednesday morning just as the two main political parties in the state, People’s Democratic Party, (PDP) and All Progressive Congress, (APC) were preparing for their Primaries.

The Command, also,  explained that the suspects were hired by yet to be identified persons to unleash mayhem at the Governorship Primaries.

Ekiti Police Command Spokesman, ASP Sunday Abutu, stated that the suspected armed thugs were arrested at the Military checkpoint by Soldiers at Itawure junction, and were subsequently handed over to the Police.

ASP Abutu said that the suspects were 98, contrary to the rumour making the round that they were over hundred, while urging members of public to disregard the social media reports.

He disclosed further that the suspects were arrested at around 3:30 am in fifteen 18 passenger-buses they boarded enroute Ekiti state.

He assured that further  investigation which would reveal their sponsor is still ongoing, adding that he would communicate to newsmen once the investigations are concluded.

Akwa Ibom: Plan To Impose Udom’s Successor Tears PDP Apart

Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom state quest to appoint a successor may precipitate a deep crisis in the ruling PDP in the oil rich state.

On Sunday, the governor brought to end months of speculation on who he will endorse as PDP candidate for next year’s governorship election, after he named Umo Eno the state’s commissioner for Lands as his preferred candidate at a stakeholders meeting held at government house, Uyo.

Speaking after the meeting, the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Ekerete Udo, said Eno was chosen by a cross section of PDP stakeholders in the state.

According to Udo, “the governor announced that he (Eno) was the one God has revealed to him as the next governor of the state and he was unveiled to all the stakeholders from the three senatorial districts of the state by the former governor, Obong Victor Attah, who then commended the choice. It was an array of the political elders made up of senators and House of Representatives members’.

But the governor’s decision to endorse Eno appears not to be well received by some governorship aspirants, including Chairman, House Representatives Committee on Judiciary, Onofiok Luke and the Commissioner for Economic Development and Ibom Deep Seaport, Akan Okon.

It was learnt that Okon refused to attend the meeting despite being invited while Luke was said to have angrily stormed out of the parley attended by major PDP stakeholders in the state including a former governor of the state, Obong Victor Attah and the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Hon. Aniekan Bassey. It was Attah who presented Eno as the endorsed candidate of the stakeholders of the party at the meeting.

Speaking after the meeting, Luke said he and other PDP stakeholders were not consulted on the matter. He said nobody can stop him from contesting for governor next year.

According to the lawmaker, “I’m not against their endorsement; and I’m not against the elders of the state. But I’m saying the endorsement could have happened after proper consultation.

“I went to Obong Attah and told him why didn’t you talk to all of us who are in this race? Why didn’t you talk to Sen Bassey Albert, why didn’t you talk to Akan Udofia; why didn’t you talk to Akan Okon; why didn’t you talk to James Iniama? because it was Obong Attah who amade the presentation, not the governor.

“We would have loved their endorsement but that would have been after due consultation. We would  love the endorsement by the elders of the state. But whoever they would endorse should be the choice of the majority of people in the state”.

Luke said he would pursue his governorship ambition notwithstanding the governor’s decision to endorse a particular candidate.

He said ”so, for me as Onofiok Akpan Luke, I am in the race for the governorship. I am going to stand election on the platform of my party the PDP. I am not part of that endorsement at all.

“But I respect their views; I respect the opinion and choice of the governor. I respect Obong Victor Attah and the opinion of the elders of the state. It is their choice. I only respect their opinion; but I am not in support of what they are doing. I was ambushed. I didn’t know the agenda of the meeting but I had to respect the governor and attend the meeting at the lodge on his invitation”.

Other PDP stakeholders who attended the meeting include Deputy Governor, Moses Ekpo; Senators Akon Eyakenyi, Effiong Bob, Ibok Essien, Aloysius Etok, former Deputy Governor, Etim Okpoyo; member representing Etinan Federal Constituency at the National Assembly, Onofiok Luke; PDP chairman, Elder Aniekan Akpan; Barr Emmanuel Enoidem amongst others.

Zamfara: Presidency Accuses PDP Of Playing To Gallery

The Presidency has accused the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP of playing to the gallery over President Muhammadu Buhari’s botched travel to Zamfara state last week.

Buhari, who was in Sokoto last Thursday to inaugurate some projects, was billed to proceed to Zamfara to discuss insecurity in the state following the recent attacks in Anka and Bukkuyum LGAs. The trip was eventually cancelled by the president citing bad weather.

But the opposition PDP criticised the president for cancelling the trip, noting that Buhari changed his mind due to fear of bandits’ attacks.

In a statement PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba said ‘the Party dismisses President Buhari’s excuse of not travelling to Zamfara State because of inclement flying weather when he had the option of travelling the short trip from Sokoto to Gusau by road.

“We ask, did Mr. President cancel the trip to Zamfara State out of fear of terrorists? Was Mr. President, an Army General, with all the security apparatus under his command afraid to travel by road because he was not sure of his security as well as the dilapidated state of our roads under his watch?

“From Sokoto to Gusau, the Zamfara State capital is about 206 kilometres, a journey a leader who has the interest of the people at heart and who is sure of his security could have undertaken by road.

“President Buhari ought to have reassured Nigerians by travelling to Gusau, instead, he opted for a video broadcast in which he promised the troubled people of the state that he looks “forward to a more weather-friendly period when I will visit,” PDP said.

Responding to PDP allegation Garba Shehu said the opposition party lacks the understanding on how president works after being in power for 16 years, noting that President Buhari cannot travel by road.

Shehu said: “There must be a limit to trivialisation. All over the world, commanders-in-chief, serving or even those that have left office, cannot hop into a car and go anywhere they want, at any time of the day.

“In the United States, for instance, a law going as far back as 1958 prevents past presidents from travelling on public roads without assured security (how much more of serving presidents).

“When roads are closed for presidential movements here and elsewhere, consideration is also given to the safety of other road users, not just of the president or even governor.

“The statement on the issue by the PDP attacking the President for not making it to Gusau, without this being planned ahead of the journey, is shameful and disgraceful for a party that held the presidency of the country in the past. What is their record? Given right conditions of the weather and all other things, he will return, and in time to accomplish his mission.”

The National Thunder of Equatorial Guinea has bowed out of the ongoing 33rd African Cup of Nations Championship in Cameroon following its loss to highly rated Teranga Lions of Senegal.

Coach Juan Micha Obiang Bicogo of Equatorial Guinea will be proud of his team for their superlative performance at the AFCON tournament, having ousted 2019 AFCON defending champion, the Desert Warriors of Algeria, the Lone Stars of Sierra Leone and the Eagles of Mali out of the tournament.

Tagged the whipping boys of the Group, Equatorial Guinea proved their mettle as a team ready to announce itself at the big stage by recording a 1-0 win over Algeria and Sierra Leone respectively, forcing Mali to a penalty shootout after a goalless 120 minutes of action.

Goalkeeper, Dennis Owono was the hero in the Round of 16 clash, putting the Equatorial Guinea side on the path of making history.

Sadly, their joy was short lived as Coach Aliou Cisse inspired Teranga Lions of Senegal dashed their hope with a 3-1 win courtesy of strikes from Famara Diedohou, Chiekh Kouyate and Ismaila Sarr to send the West African side packing from the Continental championship.

With the victory for the Senegal will now face the Stallions of Burkina Faso in the Semi Final of the tournament on Wednesday  February, 2, 2022.

The Pharaohs of Egypt will be seeking a revenge of their 2017 AFCON Final defeat to host, Indomitable Lions of Cameroon when both teams face each other in the Second Semi Finals of the tournament.

Egypt would be described as one of the surprising team of the tournament. Having lost its opening Group match to Nigeria 1-0 courtesy of a Kelechi Iheanacho strike, the Coach Carlos Queiroz side have not looked back winning all its matches enroute the Semi Final stage.

After the loss to Nigeria, it recorded a 1-0 win over the Falcons of Sudan and the Djurtus of Guinea Bissau in its other Group matches to come second in the group behind Nigeria.

Many had predicted that the Moroccans will have an easy ride over their neighbours following their impressive performance in the tournament so far, winning Three out of their previous Four games, recording just a draw which was the 2-2 draw against the Panthers of Gabon, having defeated the Black Stars of Ghana 1-0, the Coelacanths of Comoros 2-0 and a 2-1 win over the Flames of Malawi in their Round of 16 clash.

It recorded Seven goals so far as against Egypt that has scored just Two goals in their previous Four matches.

Goals from Mohammed Salah and Mostapha Mohammed was all the Egyptians needed to eliminate Morocco from the tournament. The Moroccans took the lead as early as the Eighth minute from the penalty spot through Sofiane Boufal.

Salah pulled the needed equalising goal in the second half to force the game into extra time before Mostapha scored the decisive goal to give the Coach Queiroz side a 2-1 win.

Egypt will face Cameroon in the Semi Final on Wednesday, and will be aiming to avenge its 2-1 loss to the Cameroonian in Gabon in. 2017.

At the AFCON 2017 finals, Mohammed Elneny had given the Egyptian the lead in first half before goals from Nicholas N’koulou and Vincent Aboubakar gave the Cameroon their fifth AFCON trophy.

It will be battle royale between the two countries when hostilities resume, with Cameroon having the advantage of playing on home soil and will enjoy the support of its ever supportive vociferous crowd.

Okorocha Declares Presidential Interest Monday, Flaunts Credentials

A former two-time Governor of Imo State, and now, the Senator representing Imo West Senatorial District, Rochas Okorocha, will on Monday, January 31, 2022, declare his intention to run for the office of Nigeria’s President come 2023.

Okorocha gave the hint last week at the Senate during Plenary in a letter to the President of the Senate, Dr Ahmed Lawan, where he expressed his intention to run for the office. The letter was read by Lawan at Plenary.

Okorocha will do so at, according to him, a World Press Conference in Abuja. A perennial Presidential aspirant, this will be Okorocha’s fourth trial.

The former Governor will run under the All Progressives Congress, APC, a party which foundation member he is. He is aspiring to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari.

But he enters the race as an orphan, almost.

This is because he does not have the backing of the Governor of his State, Senator Hope Uzodinma. And does not have the support of the faction of the APC in Imo State recognised by the National Working Committee, NWC.

In addition, not many people in the State take his aspiration seriously. They feel he will be one of the “also-ran.” But Okorocha is not deterred, at all.

He is brimming with confidence, a confidence boosted by his war chest. He says he is richer than the Imo State Government.

One of the things he would flaunt as he declares his aspiration is his report card as Imo Governor.

Yet, not a few people think that will be his nemesis. They are waiting to interrogate him on his stewardship in the State, a stewardship that attracted investigations by the succeeding Government.

The APC has not, officially, zoned the Presidential ticket to the South. But a number of Southern APC chieftains are taking that for granted. For now in the APC, former Lagos State Governor, Bola Tinubu, is the frontrunner. And even though Ebonyi State Governor, Dave Umahi, has declared interest, his declaration has made a zero-impact so far. There are others in the South, allegedly, waiting in the wings.

There is the urbane Vice President Yemi Osinbajo who, even though he has not declared interest, is attracting more than a passing interest. There is, also, strong speculations that both Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi and Minister for Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, are equally interested.

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Udom Emmanuel, has put an end to permutations and speculations by political observers on who would  succeed him when he leaves the saddle in 2023.

Emmanuel, going against the norm, brazenly announced that his Commissioner for Lands and Water Resources, Umo Eno will succeed him in office.

He made the announcement of his anointed successor at the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP Stakeholders’ Meeting held over the weekend at the Governor’s Lodge, in Uyo, the State Capital.

The Governor had earlier said he was seeking the face of God before  announcing his anointed successor.

Obong Victor Attah, the former Governor of the State, formally presented Eno to the Stakeholders which comprise major and leading political chieftains from the three Senatorial Districts, who all applauded the choice and pledged to work towards his emergence as the Governor of the State come 2023.

The choice of Eno by Governor Udom has, however, sparked outrage from some members of the PDP in the State who are also nursing Governorship ambition and have made their intention known to the Governor.

It was gathered that many stakeholders stormed out of the venue following the Governor’s announcement. It came as a surprise to many of them who never had the premonition that the essence of the stakeholders meeting was the endorsement of Eno as Governor of the State come 2023.

Onofiok Luke, Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Judiciary and former Speaker of Akwa Ibom House of Assembly, walked out of the event and issued a preliminary statement afterwards.

Luke in the statement said he was not aware of the agenda of the meeting but attended out of respect, to honour the Governor’s invitation.

Expressing his displeasure at the lack of consultation with other notable aspirants who had declared interest in the Governorship race, he said, “I’m not against their endorsement, and I’m not against the elders of the state. But I’m saying the endorsement could have happened after proper consultation.

“I went to Obong Attah and asked him respectfully, why didn’t you talk to all of us who are in this race? Why didn’t you talk to Senator Bassey Albert? Why didn’t you talk to Akan Udofia? Why didn’t you talk to Akan Okon? Why didn’t you talk to James Iniama? It was Obong Attah that made the presentation, not the Governor.

“I was ambushed. I didn’t know the agenda of the meeting but I had to respect the Governor and attended the meeting. For three good times, I raised my hand, seeking to be allowed to speak, but I was ignored.

“We would have loved their endorsement but that would have been after due consultation. But whoever they would endorse should be the choice of the majority of people in the state

“So, for me as Onofiok Akpan Luke, I am in the governorship race. I am going to stand election on the platform of my party, the PDP. I am not part of that endorsement at all.

“But I respect their views; I respect the opinion and choice of the governor. I respect Obong Victor Attah and the opinion of the elders of the state. It is their choice. I only respect their opinion; but I am not in support of what they are doing” Hon. Luke stated declared.

Also, Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Economic Development and Ibom Deep Seaport, Akan Okon, who is equally a frontline Governorship aspirant, as well as the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Ini Emembong, were absent at the meeting and have since declared their intention to go ahead with their Governorship ambition plan.

With the unveiling of Eno as his successor, there is presently discordant tunes in the State PDP fold, as well as in the Cabinet of the Governor. The Party is already polarized, which will in turn affect the chances of the Party at the polls in 2023.

Political observers say the Governor needs to address the brewing crisis by bringing on board all warring parties for there to be peace  within the Party stakeholders as they go to the polls.

The stakeholders meeting that led to the endorsement of Eno had in attendance the Deputy Governor, Moses Ekpo, Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Aniekan Bassey, Senators Akon Eyakenyi, Effiong Bob, Ibok Essien, Aloysius Etok, former Deputy Governor, Etim Okpoyo, Member, representing Etinan Federal Constituency at the National Assembly, Onofiok Luke, PDP Party Chairman, Elder Aniekan Akpan and Barrister Emmanuel Enoidem, the National Coordinator of the Maintain Peace Movement, (MPM) .

Other were Bishop Uma Ukpai and the Prelate Emeritus of the Methodist Church of Nigeria, Dr. Sunday Mbang, Hon Pat Ifon, member representing Eket Federal Constituency at the National Assembly and member, PDP BOT, Chief Nduese Essien, a former Minister of Housing, Ambassador Assam Assam, SAN, Nigeria’s former Ambassador to Russia , Fathers of Faith, and other leading members of the State’s political class.

PDP Accuses Umahi of Unleashing Terror on Opposition in Ebonyi State

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has accused Ebonyi State Governor, Dave Umahi, of unleashing terror on innocent Nigerians. The party said that Umahi unleashes his terror, especially, on opposition PDP members and other dissenting voices in Ebonyi State.

Instructively, Umahi shot into limelight on the ticket of the PDP, and is a two-time Governor, today, on the banner of the party.

However, he inexplicably defected to the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the first quarter of his second term in office, on the excuse that the PDP by not zoning (yet) its 2023 Presidential ticket to the South-east, has not been fair to the Zone. He has just declared interest, under the APC, in running for the Presidential seat even though, like the PDP, APC has not officially zoned the seat to the South-east.

In a statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Debo Ologunagba, the party said it is alarmed by reports that Governor Umahi is using a heavily armed killer squad, currently disguising under the “Ebube Agu” security outfit, as a political weapon to arrest, attack and inflict grievous bodily harm on Nigerians, and particularly PDP members in Ebonyi State.

Said the statement “Since Governor Umahi made the error in his devastating adventure of moving from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC) where he is unrecognized and frustrated, he has reportedly resorted to terrorizing innocent Nigerians, especially PDP members in a desperate bid to create fear, panic and siege mentality on citizens of Ebonyi State as a prelude to rigging the 2023 general elections.

“The PDP invites Nigerians to note how Governor Umahi instigated the illegal arrest of the Ebonyi State Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Nwoba Chika Nwoba, and kept him in detention without justification on the strength of a draconian law that did not pass through the established due process of lawmaking.

“Just recently, a prominent member of the PDP and former member the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Linus Abaa Okorie, was declared wanted by Governor Umahi without any accusation or charges levelled against him.

“Our Party vehemently rejects such violation of Fundamental Human Rights going on in Ebonyi State and calls on Nigerians to hold Governor Umahi and the APC responsible for acts of violence and terrorism in Ebony State.

“The PDP also calls for the immediate and unconditional release of our State Publicity Secretary in Ebonyi State as well as other innocent Nigerians reportedly detained in various facilities in the State.

“As a Party, we urge President Muhammadu Buhari, the National Security Adviser and the Police High Command to immediately step into the situation which is a serious threat to the security of Ebonyi State in particular and that of the nation in general.

“This is because any breakdown of law and order in Ebonyi State will have a ripple effect on the fragile security situation in the entire South East region of the country and beyond.

“Governor Umahi must be called to order. He must learn to live with the consequences of his ill-advised decision. He committed a political suicide by joining a party of “political bandits” and “warlords” where he has no future and should not vent his frustration on other Nigerians.

“In any case, the PDP wants Governor Umahi and the APC to know that no amount of intimidations, harassments, threats and attacks will bend the will of the people in their resolve to vote out the APC in 2023.”

Uzodimma commiserates With Nnadi, Editor Sunday Sun On Wife’s Death

Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has commiserated with the Editor of Sunday Sun, Mr. Chidi Nnadi, on the death of his beloved wife, Mrs. Hope Kelechi Nnadi, Nee Ejeka.

Mrs. Nnadi died in a Lagos hospital, aged 50.

A statement by Governor Uzodimma’s Chief Press Secretary and Media Adviser, Oguwike Nwachuku, said his Principal was saddened over the death of Mrs. Nnadi at such a young age.

Governor Uzodimma added that it is a pity Mrs. Nnadi also died when the family and society needed her services  most, describing the circumstances of her passing as unfortunate.

The Governor, particularly, expressed his heart-felt sympathy to the deceased’s husband and children, the entire Nnadi and Ejeka families as well as their friends and well wishers over the sad loss.

Governor Uzodimma prayed God to grant them His grace and the fortitude to bear the huge loss and for Mrs. Nnadi, a peaceful repose of her soul.

displeasure at what it described as the “utter lackadaisical countenance of the Governor to the numerous security issues in the State.”

The PDP urged the Governor to take precautionary measures in addressing the issues before it further escalates.

It added that criminal elements including kidnappers, armed robbers, ritual killers and cultists now operate unhindered in different parts of the State, causing untold havoc and destroying lives.

The PDP also noted that security of lives and property remains the critical responsibility of a Government but it is unfortunate and painful that innocent Kwarans are daily becoming victims of the failure of the Government in this regard.

It, therefore, called on Governor Abdulrazaq to wake up to his responsibility and save Kwarans.
