“Your Daughter, Kemi Badenoch, Is Our Future Prime Minister” – Fmr British PM, Boris Johnson Hails Nigeria

Kemi Badenoch

By Charles Igbo

A former British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, has hailed Nigeria for giving his country its “future Prime Minister”, Kemi Badenoch.

Badenoch, Nigerian by birth, is the leader of the Conservative Party.

Badenoch, really, has no use for Nigeria, a country which she runs down at any given opportunity.  But Johnson does not think Nigeria is no good.

Johnson spoke on Thursday  in Owerri, Imo State, during the State’s two-day Economic Summit.

According to Johnson,  while the UK exports pharmaceuticals, automotive parts and other economic items, Nigeria sends “so much in return such as oil and gas, Nollywood movies, brilliant doctors, nurses, technicians, and tech geniuses, among others.

“I will say nothing of those former colonies of France, but it’s wonderful; it’s absolutely wonderful that here in Nigeria, we are united, we have this huge blessing — ties of history and language and woven together constantly by the toing and froing of brilliant Nigerians to my country and and back again, and British people are coming to Nigeria, and of course I’m proud, very proud.

“We’re very grateful and honoured. And we send you former United Kingdom prime ministers, and you send us future United Kingdom prime ministers in the form of Kemi Badenoch, who comes from Nigeria and is doing better and better these days.

“And I think the greatest hope that we have, and not just the exports or the imports, is the things that we actually do together, the things that we do in partnership.

“And that there’s just so much, a Nigerian singer who stole the show in the recent coronation of our king, the Nigerian football players who have millions if not billions of fans in the Premier League and who have admirers around the world, Nigerian artists, there’s a huge Nigerian show on right now at Tate Modern, Anglo-Nigerian films that are being nominated for the Oscars.”

The Senate is resolute on its insistence on death sentence for kidnappers, its financiers and informants.

Members of the Red Chamber unanimously agreed to the proposals that would authorise law enforcement agencies to dismantle kidnapping networks by enabling stronger enforcement, as well as placing kidnapping under the terrorism framework anywhere in the federation.

The insistence on death sentence was led by the Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, with contributions from Chairman, Senate Committee on Interior, Senator Adam Oshomhole, Chairman, Senate Committee on South-East Development Commission, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu and Minority Leader of the Senate, Senator Abba Moro, among others.

The Senate President, unanimously approved amendments to the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act as proposed by the Senate leader.

Referring the Bill to the Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, Committee on National Security and Intelligence, as well as the Committee on Interior for further consultation and fine-tuning at the public hearing.

Nnamdi Kanu Seeks Transfer Out of Sokoto Custodial Centre

Nnamdi Kanu
Mazi Nnamdi Kanu

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has fixed hearing for Wednesday December 4, 2025,  on  a  motion ex-parte  filed by the convicted leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra IPOB Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, seeking to be transferred out of the Sokoto Correctional Centre.

The Source reports that Kanu was on Thursday November 20, 2025, convicted and sentenced to life in jail by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court,  Abuja Division, on a  seven count charge bordering on terrorism and other related Offences preferred against him by the Federal Government of Nigeria.

He was, subsequently, relocated to the Sokoto State Custodial Centre after the judge had specifically ruled out Kuje, Abuja Correctional Centre.

Prior to his conviction and sentencing, the IPOB’s Leader was kept at the Abuja Headquaters of the Department of State Service, DSS, facility.

Before fixing the date for the hearing of the notice, presiding Judge, Justice James Omotosho refused to either accord attention or audience to Kanu’s younger brother, Emmanuel Kanu, who had sought to move the motion on behalf of the IPOB leader.

The younger Kanu had announced his appearance for the absentee leader of IPOB, despite not being a legal practitioner.

But in rejecting Emmanuel Kanu’s request, Justice Omotosho insisted that he should engage the services of lawyers to move the motion.

“This ex-parte motion cannot be moved on the convict’s behalf because you are not a legal practitioner.

“You can engage the services of a legal practitioner,  or approach the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria for legal representation since the law allows it.

“When I said representation, it is not his (Kanu’s) brother, father, sister or relations. I mean his Counsel.

“I am not going to the merit of this application now in the interest of justice. But you cannot represent a human being when you are not a lawyer. You can only represent a corporate body.

“Therefore, you cannot move the application because you are not a Solicitor or Advocate of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

“For you to be qualified as a lawyer, it will take you another six years or thereabout. So get a Counsel to move the application”,

Justice Omotosho insisted.

Kanu, in his application, had adduced the long distance from Sokoto to Abuja to prosecute his case as among the reasons for seeking transfer.

He averred that he is currently serving jail term at a facility which is over 700 kilometers from Abuja where he has filed his appeal.

“On the 21st of November, 2025, the applicant was transferred to, and is currently detained at the Sokoto Correctional facility which is over 700 kilometers from Abuja.

“The applicant, who is currently unrepresented by Counsel, intends to personally exercise his constitutional right of appeal against the conviction and sentencing.

“The preparation of the notice of appeal and record of appeal requires personal interface with the Registrar of this Honourable Court, and the Court of Appeal Abuja.

“All persons critical to assisting the applicant in preparing his appeal, including his relatives, associates and legal consultants are based in Abuja.

“The applicant’s continued detention in Sokoto renders his constitutional right to appeal impracticable, occasioning exceptional hardship and potentially defeating the said right, in violation of Section 36 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,1999 (as amended)”, Kanu stated.

In the motion ex-parte which was personally signed by him, Emmanuel had sought an order from the Court permitting him to move the said motion in the face of the unavoidable absence of Nnamdi Kanu at the Court.

It will be recalled that the IPOB’s leader, towards the twilight of his trial, had jettisoned the services of his lawyers, preferring, instead, to defend himself, despite contrary views and advice from the Justice Omotosho.

The motion seeks among other things an order of the Court directing the Federal Government of Nigeria and the Nigerian Correctional Service to immediately transfer Kanu from Sokoto custodial centre to within the jurisdiction of the Honourable Court.

In the alternative, however, the IPOB leader is seeking an order of the Court transferring him to the Court’s ” immediate environs, such as the Suleja, or Keffi Custodial Centre for the purpose of enabling the applicant ( Kanu) to effectively prosecute his constitutionally guaranteed right of appeal.

Distribution Of Campaign Vehicles: Obi Decries APC’s Continued Prioritisation Of Politics Over Governance

0
Peter Obi in London
Mr Peter Obi

The Labour Party Leader and the 2023 Presidential flag bearer of the party, Peter Obi, has again decried the continued prioritisation of politics by the APC administration over Governance.

Obi, who was reacting to the distribution of campaign vehicles and materials for electioneering by the federal government amid the security challenge and growing poverty in the land, said it’s a profound insensitivity and abuse of trust.

Writing on his X handle on Thursday, Obi said “At a time when Nigerians are struggling with hunger, unemployment, and insecurity, the decision of any government to allocate limited public resources for distributing luxury vehicles like Hilux trucks and Hummer buses as part of the 2027 campaign mobilisation is not only insensitive but also represents a serious moral failure.

”While ordinary Nigerians are grappling with poverty and hopelessness, those in leadership positions continue to flaunt their wealth by driving brand-new Land Cruisers, Hiluxes, and Hummers, treating the suffering of the people as mere background for political theatrics. This tragic misplacement of priorities is unacceptable.

“Leadership, especially in these challenging times, should focus on providing food for the hungry, ensuring access to healthcare for the sick, restoring hope for millions of unemployed youth, and securing our communities. It should not be about parading luxury vehicles or campaigning for votes.

“It is disheartening that, at a time when children are dropping out of school because their families cannot afford tuition fees, when mothers are dying during childbirth due to a lack of basic medical supplies, and when insecurity is tearing families apart, the response from those in power is to purchase and distribute luxury vehicles rather than urgently addressing the needs of the people.

“This is not governance. It reflects a profound insensitivity and an abuse of public trust disguised as a political strategy. It betrays the essence of public service, which should always be about serving the people rather than staging political publicity.

‘At times like this, we must recognise that Nigeria cannot continue on a path of wastefulness, insensitivity, and misplaced priorities. Our citizens deserve leadership grounded in empathy, prudence, and accountability. Regardless of how bleak the situation may appear today, I firmly believe that a New Nigeria is not only necessary; it is POssible.

Former UK PM, Boris Johnson, In Owerri, Declares Imo Safe, Thumbs-up Uzodimma

Hope Uzodimma and Boris Johnson

By Charles Igbo

A former British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, has put a lie to the stories he said he usually heard and  read about the state of insecurity and development in the State.

Johnson spoke in Owerri where he was one of the scores of very high profile guests present at the two-day Imo State Economic/Investment Summit which began on Thursday, December 4.

He said before his arrival to  Owerri, he had read a lot of discouraging things about the state of insecurity in the State. But he said he refused to be discouraged and decided to proceed to Owerri. On arrival, he said he found Imo State serene and the people at peace.

He was, also, impressed by what the Governor has done, infrastructure-wise. He described it as fantastic and gave him thumps-up on, especially, his focus on providing the people with steady electricity.

Boris Johnson:  “When I decided to come to Owerri, I read some stuff and some people say there may be some security problems and I said, well I’m gonna go anyway. But we are here today in this conference and we are all feeling safe and secured, and I feel perfectly safe.

“Thank you Governor Hope Uzodimma for what you are doing. There’s rule of law and safety on the street (of Owerri), absolutely.

“And on infrastructure, that’s a fantastic job and your focus on electricity is absolutely right.”

By Akinwale Kasali

William Troost-Ekong, Super Eagles Captain, has drawn the curtain to an illustrious football journey with the National Team. He has announced his retirement.

The announcement brought an emotional close to a decade-long career with Nigeria’s Senior National Team.

The defender made the announcement on Thursday in  a heartfelt statement posted on his X page, reflecting on his journey, achievements, and the honour of representing the country.

The Nigerian-Danish born defender earned 83 caps and featured in five major tournaments for Nigeria.

He described the decision to path ways with the National Team as one made “with peace,” noting that he has given everything throughout his international career.

He recounted how a 2015 phone call from the late Super Eagles coach Stephen Keshi changed his life and opened the door for him to make his senior team debut just a month later.

“Going on to captain the Super Eagles was beyond my wildest dreams,” he wrote. “Nigeria took me in and trusted me to lead and represent a nation of 230+ million. From a boy born and raised in the Netherlands to the Oyibo Wall and eventually skippo is a privilege I will always hold close to my heart.”

The 31-year-old highlighted several milestones, including a bronze medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics, appearances at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, and three Africa Cup of Nations tournaments—culminating in a memorable run at AFCON 2023, where he scored in the final and was named Player of the Tournament.

“To this day I still wish for a different ending,” he admitted, adding that becoming the highest-scoring defender in African Cup of Nations, AFCON history was an honour he shared with every teammate who contributed to those moments.

Troost-Ekong expressed pride in being part of a generation of Super Eagles players who proved that members of the diaspora could return home and represent Nigeria with distinction. He also paid tribute to the coaches, staff members, and teammates who accompanied him on the journey, as well as fans he described as “the heartbeat of Nigerian football.”

While stepping away from the national team, Troost-Ekong made it clear that this is “not a final goodbye,” noting that his work within Nigerian communities will continue, along with his passion for the Super Eagles.

“The last decade has been filled with commitment, pride, and unforgettable memories,” he said. “Wearing the Super Eagles shirt has been more than playing football. It has been a duty, a privilege, and an honour.”

Troost-Ekong took over the Captain armband from Ahmed Musa.

General Christopher Musa - Swears in
General Christopher Musa

By Ayodele Oni

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has administered the oath of office to former Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, as new Minister of Defence.

‎The brief but symbolic ceremony, held on Thursday, at the State House, Abuja, marked the commencement of Musa’s responsibilities as he steps into one of the nation’s most strategic security portfolios.

‎General Musa, who until his retirement served as the country’s top military officer, is expected to bring his decades-long operational experience and leadership in counterterrorism and joint-service coordination to bear in addressing Nigeria’s complex security challenges.

‎His appointment comes at a time the Federal Government is intensifying efforts to strengthen national defence systems, reform military operations, and enhance cooperation among security agencies.

‎It is expected that the new Minister will immediately begin consultations with Service Chiefs and Defence stakeholders as part of plans to update current security frameworks and accelerate ongoing reforms across the armed forces.

‎With the swearing-in now completed, attention turns to how Musa’s military expertise will shape Nigeria’s defence strategy in the coming months.
