No Relief As Court Throws Out Abba Kyari’s Bail Application

0
Abba Kyari in Court

By Uche Mbah

A Federal High Court in Abuja, Monday, ruled on the bail application filed by suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari, and an Assistant Commissioner of Police, Sunday J. Ubua. Both were  refused bail, as the Court  opted  for accelerated hearing.

The two other Police Inspectors arraigned with them were also denied bail.

The battle has been on for bail for the former super cop with the Court reserving ruling for Monday, 28 march 2022.

Kyari and his five co- accused are being prosecuted by the Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, for drug related offences. Kyari is seeking bail on health grounds.

Justice Emeka Nwite, in a ruling Monday, insisted that the prosecution has sufficient evidence before the Court that negates tbe granting of bail to the defendants.

Justice Nwite, therefore, opted for an accelerated hearing of the case.

Kyari, a former revered Commander of the Police Intelligence Response Team, IRT, was suspended by the Police Service Commission, PSC, after he was indicted by America’s FBI  over his alleged entanglement with international internet fraudster, Hushpuppi, who has already been found guilty in the USA, and awaiting sentencing.

The FBI requested for Kyari’s extradition to the US to face charges. While the case was still on, Kyari, inexplicably, got entangled with Drug Barons. The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA,  publicly, accused him and four other Police Officers of being neck deep into a Drug network. Kyari was also accused of trying to bribe an NDLEA operative  to the tune of $61,000 to sell  five kilograms of Cocaine out of the 25 kilograms  two Drug Couriers arrested at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, on behalf of NDLEA operatives.

He and the others have since been under the NDLEA custody since their arrest.

At the last Court hearing for bail, Kyari’s wife, who was present in Court,  collapsed when the Judge adjourned ruling on the bail request to Monday, March 28, 2022.

The request has, finally, been rejected.

Obiano Suffering From A Semi-Deadly Condition – His Lawyer

Governor Willy Obiano of Anambra State

By Charles Igbo

Not a few people wondered why former Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano, tried to leave Nigeria for the United States of America the same day his tenure as Governor expired.

Obiano was on his way out of Nigeria on March 17, 2022, after handing over power to his successor, Professor Charles Soludo.

But he was intercepted, and arrested at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos, at about 8.30pm by Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

He was, thereafter, flown to the EFCC Headquarters in Abuja, detained for five days, before he was granted an administrative bail.

Many thought the hurry with which he tried to leave the country was untidy. And considering that he was aware that the EFCC had placed him under its watch- list since November 2021, they thought he was trying to escape from the country.

But his Lawyer, Patrick Ikwueto, SAN, says perish such thoughts.

In an exclusive interview with Premium Times, Ikwueto disclosed that Obiano had an already scheduled medical appointment with his doctors at the Spring Creek Urologist Specialist, LLC, Houston, Texas, USA. He described Obiano’s condition as “semi-fatal.” He, also, said that Obiano, aware that he had been placed on the EFCC watch- list, had reached out to “authorities”, before his aborted trip, to explain his condition, and assured that that he would be back to the country to face any allegations against him by the EFCC, as soon as he is through with his doctors.

He got assurances of an intervention with the EFCC, the Lawyer said, but was shocked that his medical trip was aborted after the assurances.

Premium Times quoted Ikwueto as saying: “He was not running away. Why would he run away when his family is here and he has a lot to do here? The fact is that he (Obiano) has a medical condition for which he had a prior appointment to see his Specialist Doctor for treatment at Spring Creek Urology Specialists LLC, Houston, Texas, USA.

“By the nature of the ailment, he has been undergoing treatment at the said Specialist Hospital  since June 2021, and had an appointment earlier scheduled for the final stage of Specialist Radiology for eight weeks – which will take place immediately upon his arrival at the facility in Houston, Texas, USA, and, thereafter, after four days. Subsequent treatments are scheduled everyday for a period of eight weeks.”

According to Ikwueto, Obiano has been receiving treatment in same hospital every three months.

Said he: “The last time he was there was December 2021, and became due for another round of treatment this March, shortly before he handed over to Soludo.”

It is not known yet when his travel documents will be released to enable him travel. Until he became Governor, Obiano was resident in Houston, Texas.

RCCG Pastor Dumps Priesthood For Traditional Stool In Ogbomoso

By Tosin Olatokunbo

All is now set for the Oyo state government to announce Afolabi Ghandi Olaoye, a pastor with the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG to become the 21st Soun of Ogbomoso.

The clergy man resigned from the Pastor Enoch Adeboye-led RCCG recently to contest for the traditional position, and has now been elected by his people to lead them.

It was learnt that the kingmakers in the ancient town had recently arranged for a meeting with all the contestants to the throne, where they sued for a rancour -free selection of a successor to the occupier of the stool wo joined his ancestors last year.

“All the contestants from the ruling house were allowed to cast their votes for one of them to emerge. It was during the process that the pastor emerged among the pack of six other contestants,” a kingmaker privy to the meeting told The Source magazine on Monday.

The insider said it was the turn of a new family among the ruling houses in the town to produce the next Soun following the demise of the last traditional.

Pastor Olaoyo will now succeed the late Soun of Ogbomoso, Jimoh Oyewumi Ajagungbade III, who died last year and has since been buried in December 2021, subject to the approval of the Governor Seyi Makinde’s government in the state.

Before he dumped his assignment in the vineyard of God, the Soun-Elect was Lead Pastor at the Redeemed Christian Church.

He’s quite popular in the Pentecostal mission and is know to be one of the confidante of respected Pastor Adeboye, even though it could not be confirmed yet whether he sought the approval of the RCCG Leader to mount the throne of his forebearers.

This is so because RCCG, one of the biggest Pentecostal churches in the country abhors rituals in any form, because of the belief that the traditional rulership system encourages ritual and sacrifice, which clearly contradicts biblical and doctrinal teachings of the church.

For instance, one of the reasons why a pastor could be sacked from the church, without appeal is when such is caught with charms or involvement in diabolical things. Many Nigerians are watching how Pastor Olaoye will be able to combine his Christian faith with his traditional role as Soun of Ogbomoso.

SEC Worried As More Investors Abandon Dividends

By Tosin Olatokunbo

The Securities and Exchange Commission, SEC says it’s worried over the rate of unclaimed dividend in the capital market. The commission has therefore appealed to investors to do everything on their part to claim their dividends.

The commission made the appeal after reports that the federal government is planning to borrow the unclaimed dividends to fund selected infrastructure in the country.

The 2020 Finance Act empowers the federal government to borrow a certain percentage from unclaimed dividends which owners have not claimed for at least six years.

But the civil society have kicked against the plan, insisting that the owners of such dividend will be robbed of their investments and made poorer.

For instance, SERAP a civil society has sued the federal government over the plan to tap into unclaimed dividends for developmental purposes.

The value of unclaimed dividends, the magazine learnt has risen to close to N 1 trillion in the last few years.

According to a statement by the Commission in Abuja on Sunday, Lamido Yuguda, the Director-General of SEC, expressed regret over abandoned dividends when Prof. Kabiru Bala, Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria paid him a visit.

Yuguda said “People have not come forward to claim their dividends and this has led to huge unclaimed dividends.

“The Commission has been educating and enlightening the public on how they can get their dividends. People do not need to wait for the broker to send the dividend warrants through the registrars.

“The dividends can be paid directly into their bank accounts through e-dividend payments,’’ he said.

The Companies and Allied Matters Act provides that unclaimed after 12 years should be included in the profits that should be distributed to the other shareholders of the company.

In a suit filed against the federal government in March 14, 2021, Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP the group urged a Federal High Court in Abuja to restrain and stop President Muhammadu Buhari and the Federal Government from borrowing about N895 billion of Nigerians’ money in the form of their unclaimed dividends and balances in dormant accounts.

SERAP described the Finance Act which gave the government such powers unlawful, unconstitutional and discriminatory.

In the suit number FHC/ABJ/CS/31/2021, SERAP prayed for, “An order of perpetual injunction restraining and stopping President Buhari from demanding, taking over, borrowing, and collecting Nigerians’ money in the form of their unclaimed dividends and funds in dormant accounts or transferring and moving the money into a trust fund known as ‘Unclaimed Funds Trust Fund.’

“The Federal Government should not be allowed to borrow Nigerians’ money. Borrowing unclaimed dividends and funds in dormant accounts owned by ordinary Nigerians would negatively affect their right to an adequate standard of living, and access to clean water, quality healthcare and education,” SERAP said.

By Akinwale Kasali

Barrister Kingsley Burutu Otuaro, Delta State Deputy Governor has thrown his hat in the ring for the 2023 Gubernatorial Race in the State.

Otuaro picked the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP Nomination and Expression of Interest Forms, signaling his preparedness to contest the State Gubernatorial election for his Party.

The interest shown by Otuaro has further put his principal, Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa in a fix.

Speculations are rife that Governor Okowa is set to anoint Olorogun David Edevebie, but with Otuaro indicating interest in the Delta Governorship seat, the Governor is in a dilemma.

Otuaro, who is politically known as KBO, stated that he was prepared to take over the Delta State seat of power after picking the 2023 Governorship Form for Delta State at the PDP National Secretariat in Abuja, which was agog as Party faithful, staunch believers and stakeholders of the KBO Campaign organisation were on ground chanting songs of praise to receive the Gubernatorial Aspirant whom they said has all it takes to govern the State.

Otuaro promised Deltans that he was set to consolidate on the achievements of the Okowa administration.

According to him, “This signals a very significant milestone in my readiness to contest the gubernatorial election and win for our party. I am happy and thankful for the overwhelming supports I am getting from Deltans.

“As part of the Senator Ifeanyi Okowa led government, you know i am an integral part of it. People oriented programmes, policies and reforms of course have been made by the present administration, my focus is to ensure that these reforms translate to improved Socio economic lives of the people.

‘It is going to be a swell time for Deltans as they can not wait to have us come on board as quickly as possible” Otuaro noted.

Shortly after picking his Forms, the frontline gubernatorial aspirant visited Elder statesman Chief Edwin Clark, former President of Nigeria Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan and the former Governor of Delta State, Chief James Onanefe Ibori at Abuja to receive their prayers and blessings for his Gubernatorial ambition.

Few days to his medical trip to India, Popular Nigeria Gospel Singer, Chinedu Nwadike has died of Blood Cancer also known as Leukamia.

The ‘God of Vengeance’ crooner has been battling the disease for a long time, before succumbing to the cold hands of death in Abuja, the nation’s Capital Sunday afternoon.

The 39-year-old was reported to have recovered from kidney disease and was expected to be transferred to India for treatment of the blood cancer.

Before his death, the “Oku Gbajie Aka” crooner had pleaded for financial help from prominent Nigerians and others.

This caught the attention of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, the Senator representing Anambra South in the National Assembly, who had indicated interest in funding the medical trip of the late Gospel Musician to India.

Expressing sadness over the demise of the talented young man, Senator Ubah said the musical evangelist, Chinedu Nwadike was a huge loss.

In a post on his Facebook page on Sunday, Ubah said Nwadike had perfected plans to travel to India for treatment before death came knocking.

The Nnewi-born Senator, who shared a picture with the deceased on a sick bed, said “I am deeply grieved and saddened by the death of my good friend and brother; Evang. “Until his untimely demise, Evang. Chinedu Nwadike positively impacted the lives of many Nigerians and millions of people across the world. We thank God for the thousands of lives who were delivered from spiritual and evil bondages through his ministrations.

2023: Applause, Mockery As Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, Declares For Presidency

0
Nyesom Wike

By Adesina Soyooye

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, has declared interest to run for the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Wike declared his interest, not in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, not in Abuja, the Federal Capital, but in Makurdi, Benue State.

To many people, Wike’s declaration comes as a surprise, especially, as this declaration runs contrary to his earlier stand. Some months ago, he had said that he was not interested in contesting for any elective office in 2023. But to some other people, Wike did not surprise. They said he has been weaving this basket for a long time.

True, his recent tours all over the country has been suspicious. He has been travelling from one State of the Federation to the other. And, so has been his strong voice in National affairs and in his party, the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, where he is called  “Headmaster of the worst order” behind his back.

His foot soldiers have been at work for months, and had reached out to some Media Practitioners close to them, asking them to work for him.

The nearest inkling to Wike’s  ambition came from Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, who, during his recent spat with Wike let the cat out of the bag. He told Wike that nobody was stopping him from his Presidential ambition, but that he was expected to pursue it with decorum.

And then, at a meeting of the PDP Governors in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State the other day, Wike told the Party that the Presidential ticket should be zoned to the South-south. He described the Zone as the bedrock of the PDP, explaining that the State had stood by the PDP since 1999, and that 2023 is the year to show appreciation, to pay back.

On Sunday, March 27, all the speculations came to an end when Wike declared his interest in the office of the President in Makurdi, Benue State.

Addressing Party delegates at the Government House, Makurdi, Wike asked them to shun some Presidential aspirants under the PDP, as they were responsible for the loss the Party suffered against APC in 2015.

Not a few people knew immediately that he was referring to Atiku Abubakar, former Vice President, PDP’s Presidential candidate in 2019, former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, and Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal. The three, who are also, aspiring to the office of the President in 2023, under the PDP,  had defected from the PDP to the APC, thus, giving the APC a big edge over the PDP. However, they re-defected to the PDP in 2019. Wike accused them of leaving the Party when it mattered most.

Wike: “Let these people who are interested in Presidency in the PDP tell us their contributions. You claimed to be one of the founding fathers of the Party, but you left and came back. You have become an ordinary person in the new PDP.

“If you form a company, and run away because the company is not doing well, then, you come back and find that it is now doing well,  will you want to come and take over?

“Some people want to use Nigeria to get back their private businesses. Let them mention their private sector that survived.” Apparently, referring to Saraki, he asked: “Is it bank that your father had”?

“Everybody is an employer of labour. Even me, I have 50 people in my house. So, everybody has been employing people according to his capacity.

“In 2015, most of these people made us, PDP, to lose elections.” But on this point, many have wondered why Wike backed Tambuwal to the in 2019, and have asked: “Did Wike not know at the time that Tambuwal was one of those who betrayed the Party in 2015?”

Referring to himself, Wike said he had stood like a rock behind the party, and have contributed much to it.”

On his penchant for hitting hard at people, he said:

“I have spoken truth to power. I don’t have problem with anybody, but have to tell them the truth. Umahi and the others have abused me because I told him that he cannot take our mandate away.

“As a Governor, I have performed well. I can go anywhere with my shoulder high. How many of them have challenged this Government (APC)?

“Don’t sell your vote. Please, give me your vote as we go to Primary.

Leveraging on the insecurity in Benue State for which tge State Governor, Samuel Ortom, has had a running battle with President Muhammadu Buhari, Wike promised: “If I become President, we will take security as priority because the main purpose of Government is protection of lives and property.”

His host, Samuel Ortom, Benue State Governor, recounted how much help Wike had given the State, especially, with the Internally Displaced Persons, IDP, and promised that the State would give him support.

However, Wike’s declaration has sparked different opinions. While some people have hailed him, declaring him a strong character, who speaks his mind, and who Nigerians need, others have dismissed  him as brash, unpolished, undiplomatic, insisting that he does not have the temperament to occupy the office of Nigeria’s President.

In the South-south, Wike is the first to declare interest in the Presidential seat. It is being speculated that his predecessor, and Minister for Transportation, Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi, would soon declare under the APC, even though he denies it.

In Wike’s PDP, he is entering a crowded field of aspirants. Aside from Atiku, Saraki, Tambuwal, and Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, there are from the South-east, former Senate President, Anyim Pius Anyim, who was the first to declare his interest in the office, Sam Ohuabunwa, and a former two-term Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, who was the Party’s Vice Presidential candidate in 2019.

Wike is serving his second term as Rivers State Governor.

PDP Attacks APC Over Choice Of Adamu Abdullahi As National Chairman, Says It’s Elevation Of Corruption

0
Senator Abdullahi Adamu

By Gideon Njoku

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, says the choice by the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, of Senator Abdullahi Adamu as its National Chairman, has rubbished any claim that the Government is fighting corruption.

Adamu, a two-term Governor of Nasarawa State,  and a Senator, all under the PDP, inexplicably, defected to the APC. But that is not what the PDP is concerned about. Rather, the Party is worried that President Muhammadu Buhari could impose a man being tried in Court for alleged corruption, as the National Chairman of the ruling Party.

Adamu was arraigned in Court by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on a-149 count charge of alleged ” fraudulent award of contracts and stealing of public funds estimated at N15 billion.”

Based on that, the PDP said, in a statement on Sunday, March 27, 2022, signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, that “It is, therefore, pathetic to see Senator Adamu, showboating on stage, to impress his puppet master by attempting to denigrate other Nigerians and our great Party, the PDP.”

Following is the full text of the statement by the PDP.

“The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) mocks the All Progressives Congress (APC) over the imposition of Sen. Abdullahi Adamu, a man who was arraigned in Court on 149-count charge of alleged fraudulent award of contracts and stealing of public funds estimated at N15 billion, as its National Chairman.

“The PDP describes the APC jamboree in the name of a National Convention as a Convention of lies, celebration of illegality, corruption and arrogance in failure adding that any leadership birthed through such process can only be overtly corrupt, debauch and illegal.

“It is clear that with the combination of the corrupt, deceitful and rudderless Buhari-led APC government and the illegitimate Abdullahi Adamu-led party leadership, corruption, economic hardship and rudderlessness in the APC government will worsen in our country in the remaining one year of the APC in government.

“The composition of the APC national leadership is a clear confirmation that President Buhari has never been committed to the fight against corruption as well as his willingness to further open our national vaults to ravenous treasury looters in the APC.

“The PDP challenges members of the illegitimate APC national leadership, particularly Sen. Adamu to come clean on corruption charges against them.

“The new APC Chairman should inform Nigerians why he was not courageous enough to submit himself to trial at the Federal High Court, Lafia, Nasarawa State rather than hide under technicalities. Senator Adamu should therefore come clean to Nigerians on the said case before parading himself as a saint.

“It is therefore pathetic to see Sen. Adamu showboating on stage to impress his puppet master by attempting to denigrate other Nigerians and our great Party, the PDP.

“Our Party has only pity for Sen. Adamu and does not intend to confer him an undue relevance with a response. Sen. Adamu should however be conscious of the fact that time does not run against the State in criminal matters. He should therefore not have any illusion that being an APC Chairman will avail him a perpetual cover.

“Moreover, it was appalling to see APC leaders come out one after the other at their national jamboree to spew out lies and false performance claims on the economy, infrastructure and security even in the face of biting economic hardship, high cost of living, excruciating fuel emergency, lingering crisis in the education sector and escalated insecurity that was happening real time and simultaneously when the ridiculous claims of achievement were being made.

“Is it not shameful that while APC leaders were lying on stage in Abuja, terrorists were busy attacking the Kaduna International Airport, located in an APC controlled state?

“In any case, the PDP restates its cautions that the purported APC National Working Committee (NWC) does not have the legitimacy of office as the process that produced it under the Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC) remains unconstitutional and flawed.

“The PDP cautions aspirants intending to participate in the 2023 general elections under the APC to note that they are on a journey to nowhere with the APC.”

Adamu was, on Saturday, March 26, 2022,  on President Buhari’s insistence, crowned as the National Chairman of the APC during its National Convention.

Ekiti Gov Poll: SDP Alerts Security Agents On Alleged Plan By APC To Unleash Terror

0
Segun Oni

By Ayodele Oni

Ahead of the June Governorship election in Ekiti State, the Segun Oni Campaign Organization has alleged that the leadership of the All Progressive Congress (APC) is planning to unleash terror on the people of the state, especially members of the Social Democratic Party (SDP)

The group said that APC singled out members of the Segun Oni’s Social Democratic Party because of its rising profile that has suddenly made it the party to beat in the forthcoming election in the state.

This was contained in a statement in Ado Ekiti on Sunday by the Director, Media and Publicity, Segun Oni Movement, Mr Jackson Adebayo.

He explained that the leadership of the APC met with Governor Kayode Fayemi at the government house shortly before the national convention of the APC where the defection of some prominent members of the party to the Social Democratic Party was reviewed and came out with the decision to change  strategy to physical attack of the opposition SDP meeting whenever it holds.

According to Adebayo,  the conclusion to resort to mayhem was due to concern by Governor Fayemi on what he described as weakling posture of APC in the state in few weeks to the election.

It added that the Governor complained that the executives of the APC have become so docile to the extent that in some local government areas, the party was shamelessly deflated as members  dissolved into the SDP.

Adebayo further explained that it was at this stage that the leadership of the party became resolute to apply the strategy of attacking any where the SDP is holding meetings with their thugs, while the coordination of the activities of the thugs was assigned to the office of the Chief of staff to the governor.

Adebayo stressed that part of the plan also was to attack  leaders of SDP accross the 16 local government areas in other to create a situation where members of the party would not be able to gather for meetings again.

He further claimed that Council chairmen were assigned with the responsibility.

The spokesman further alleged that some of those that attended the meeting and advised against the operation were vehemently rebuked and threatened to be sent out, while some were accused of working with SDP to undermine the governor.

The Segun Oni Movement said that APC and violence are just like six and half dozen and that has been their antecedents especially when they sensed that the people are not with them anymore.

“We shall not however fold our arms if they make real their ingenious and barbaric plan as nobody is endowed with the monopoly of violence.

“But we appeal to traditional rulers in all the local government areas to call the leaders of the APC in their areas to order as any attempt to try to execute their ignoble plans will spell doom.

“At the same time we call on the State Commissioner of Police , the Director of the Department of State Services and  the heads of other security agencies to warn the leadership of the APC to stop their plans of destruction before it is too late.”
