Imo PDP: Why They Are After Me – Senator Anyanwu, National Secretary

0

By Charles Igbo

Senator Samuel Anyanwu, popular as Samdaddy, National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has said some people are after him from his home State, Imo, and are doing everything to destroy him.

He revealed that to achieve that, a sum of N100m has been set aside and plunged into the project. He said the money would be spent on propaganda against him.

The good thing, according to him, is that “they cannot go further than they have gone already”,  and that he knows where the money is coming from.

Senator Anyanwu was responding to the pronouncements made by a House of Representatives Aspirant in the State for the Ideato North and South Federal Constituency, Ikenga Ugochinyere Imo, who said the National Secretary has been expelled from the Party and, therefore, not a member.

Anyanwu said Ugochinyere is, however, a disqualified Aspirant.

But Ugochinyere’s stand was supported by Tochukwu Ohazuruike, a Lawyer and member of the PDP,  Imo State, while speaking during an interview  session on Arise Television on Tuesday.

Anyanwu; in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media, Ikenna Onuoha, dismissed Ohazuruike as an “unrepentant blackmailer and a political hireling”

He said: “On Arise Television Tuesday, May 10th, 2022, one Tochukwu Ohazurike, a known  political  hireling and unrepentant blackmailer who parades himself as a Lawyer, accused the National Secretary of PDP, Senator Samuel Anyanwu of hijacking the 3-man adhoc delegate Congress election held on April 30, 2022 in Imo State.

“Ohazurike also claimed that Senator Anyanwu allegedly hijacked the delegate results to pave way for his Governorship election anytime it will hold.

“Regrettably, he shamefully refused to tell his audience whether he saw Senator Anyanwu live at the scene of the exercise or not to have propelled him to hijack the results.

“Re-emphasizing what a disqualified House of Representatives aspirant for Ideato North and South earlier alleged, Ohazurike maintained that Senator Anyanwu is not a member of PDP hence, should not continue to function as the party’s National Secretary.

“Pitiably, this is the only extent they can go, no more no less!

“Be that as it may, Ohazurike is entitled to his personal opinion whether negative or positive, but it, therefore, becomes so worrisome and unfortunate for him to embarrass himself on the air over an issue he does not know its crux.

“The truth of the matter is that Ohazurike and his likes are gate crashers and infiltrators into our party who can do anything possible to destroy the relative peace the party is currently enjoying.

“It is regrettable to inform the public that Ohazurike and his cohorts are struggling to malign the reputation of PDP National Secretary all in a bid to justify the N100 million they were said to have collected from a known desperate politician in Imo state.

“However, we cannot continue to join issues with these disgruntled elements who anxiously masquerade around seeking to whom to devour especially, once money exchanges hands. We have exhausted our respect for them hence, cannot respond again on this subject.

“Our appeal is that their brains should be tested to ascertain the level of their mental sanity.”

The PDP in Imo State has been having its internal crisis, especially, since the election of Anyanwu as the National Secretary. There seems an obvious power struggle over who the leader of the Party is between the former Governor of the State, The Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha and Anyanwu, especially, over who controls the structure.

Victims Of Police Brutality In Osun Receive N52.3 Million Compensation

Adegboyega Oyetola

By Ayodele Oni

Hope rekindled as victims of police brutality in Osun State beamed with smiles following monetary reward for them by the Osun state government.

The Government on Thursday presented cheques of N53,290,000.00 as compensation to 13 victims of police brutality in the State.

The gesture, according to the State Government, was a further testament to the commitment to peace, unity, justice, equality, and indeed, the rule of law.

This is even as the State Governor, Adegboyega Oyetola, affirmed that the motive was a deliberate quest to redress the wrongs of yesterday and set the State on the path of true healing.

Governor Oyetola had, in compliance with the directive of the Federal Government, constituted the

Judicial Panel of Inquiry against Police Brutality, Human Rights Violations and Related Extra Judicial Killings, aftermath of the nationwide endSARS protest.

The Panel, which was headed by the retired Judge of the High Court, Justice Akinwale Oladimeji, was charged to look critically and painstakingly into cases of assault, illegal arrest, killings, brutality and other forms of rights abuse by the officers and men of the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Nigerian Police.

The panel had recommended financial compensation to some of the affected victims  to heal their wounds.

The Panel, in its report recommended the sum of N53,290,000 as compensation for the 13 of the 21 cases heard.

Presenting cheques to the victims, in Osogbo, Governor Oyetola said the initiative has further confirmed that his administration was conscious of the fact that no society can truly progress where the reign of injustice, inequality and lawlessness is encouraged to thrive.

He reiterated his administration’s commitment to continuously maintain peace, guarantee the security of lives and property of the citizens and advance the course of the security agencies through the provision of state-of-the-art security architectures.

Governor Oyetola who appealed to the citizens to continue to be law abiding and always demonstrate the virtues of Omoluabi ethos that the State is known for, said the State would spare no effort to create ambience of peace and tranquility for the citizens.

“Today’s occasion should therefore be regarded as a deliberate quest to redress the wrongs of yesterday and set our society on the path of true healing.

“Our decision to pay compensation, which ordinarily is not the responsibility of the State, since the Police is not directly under our control, is a further testament to the commitment of our Administration to peace, and the rule of law.

“Let me however reiterate here that the list of all those that have secured judgement debts have been passed on to the federal government for necessary action, in line with the recommendation of the Panel.

“As an administration, we understand that no society can truly progress where the reign of injustice, inequality and lawlessness is encouraged to thrive.

“On behalf of the Government and our people, I passionately appeal to all those who are justifiably aggrieved for the wrongs meted to them in one way or the other to forgive and allow the next chapter of true and sustainable healing to open up for the good of all.

“I assure you that we are committed to supporting the Nigeria Police Force in fully implementing relevant reforms that would enable it play its role of maintaining law and order.

“Today’s event is a further testament to the commitment of our Administration to peace, and the rule of law.

“As citizens and officers of the State, let us reciprocate this  gesture by continuing to relate with each other with highest mutual civility, respect and understanding in the interest of sustainable peace and development.

“I salute the leadership of the Civil Society Organisations and youths for their understanding and tolerance over the years. I assure you that we will never let you down as a government in ensuring that we secure your future.

“On behalf of the Government and People of Osun, I express immense gratitude to the Hon. Justice Oladimeji-led Judicial Panel of Inquiry against Police Brutality, Human Rights Violations and Related Extra Judicial Killings for their impeccable services to the State.”.

Earlier in his remarks, the Chairman of the Panel, Justice Akin David Oladimeji,  who described the gesture as a right step in the right direction, noted that the decision would further register confidence in the minds of the people.

OPINION: Adamu’s Genius and the Road to the Presidency

Azu Ishiekwene

By Azu Ishiekwene

After emerging as the consensus Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Adamu, was faced with a major crisis. Healing the deep divisions in the party was urgent but it was not even the most serious concern of the 75-year-old senator, former governor and former member of the opposition party. Nor was the dilapidated, rudderless state of the party organs the most pressing task.

His problem was more severe. In vehicular metaphor, he had just inherited a car without an engine. And this happened ahead of a major race in which his party is not only hoping to do well, but also to win. He needs money to fix the engine and oil the party machine, but the party is broke, if not bankrupt.

His new executive toyed with the idea of probing its predecessors but quickly dropped it. It would be a needless distraction and there was hardly any time for that. Insiders said at this point, members of the newly constituted national executive committee met and decided that the only way to repair the party’s finances and fund the forthcoming elections was to raise the cost of the nomination forms by 122 percent, that is, from N45 million in the last election cycle in 2019 to N100 million.

Why anyone would buy a form for N100m to prequalify to tackle a raft of problems ranging from a serious debt crisis to banditry and from insurgency to rampant corruption and a distressed national currency, is baffling. But Adamu’s executive obviously thought there was no other way, except those that had been tried with severe negative consequences.

It’s in the nature of party politics in Nigeria that party chairmen serve two masters. They are appointed and removed by the strongest faction (usually the president in the case of the ruling party) to whom they must bow. And also, they hold their positions at the pleasure of governors who fund the parties.

In the last over two decades, at least, the fall of chairmen across party lines is traceable to political transactions with governors, especially at election time, for the organised bazaar of party positions. This transaction allows chairmen to make some money, offers governors a bargain, while the change, if there is any, is used to run the party.

It was a temptation that Adamu wanted to resist by building, if you like, an “independent” war chest outside the contaminated trough. And yet, he overcame this temptation by yielding to its worst outcomes. His predecessor, Adams Oshiomhole, had tried, for the first time, to raise money from the sale of party forms to fund candidates in 2019, with limited success.

Unlike what obtains in other countries where the party rank and file chips in its bit and special interest groups with shared ideology also come through for the party, the contribution here is zero. Since party registers are at best dubious and party accounts are not audited, funds come from anywhere from private pockets to bullion vans. No one is exactly sure what it costs political parties to run, say, a presidential election campaign, for example.

A report in The Africa Report of March 22, said staging a presidential campaign alone could cost up to $2 billion. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) set the bar for 2023 at N1 billion ($2.4 million), now adjusted to N5 billion ($12 million), but has no way of knowing, monitoring or enforcing this threshold.

Former presidential spokesperson, Doyin Okupe, himself a presidential wannabe, told the magazine that, “No Nigerian president in the last 20 years has spent less than $100 million to be president. It’s now upwards of $300 million. I know this because I’m an insider…No Nigerian president has through his sheer wealth alone put himself in office, whether Olusegun Obasanjo, Umaru Yar’Adua or Goodluck Jonathan.” He might have added Muhammadu Buhari as well.

It’s one of the paradoxes of this republic that a system that should guarantee reasonable opportunities – an egalitarian system, if you like – still manages to produce political oligarchs. The system appears designed to be forbiddingly expensive and there is no one who has witnessed Nigeria’s elections in the last nearly two and a half decades that would not be alarmed at the outrageous monetisation of the process under a party that campaigned for change. Politicians dispense bribes in sacks or stuff them in between bread loaves, depending on who is at the receiving end, where and when.

Caught between the devil of depending on governors to fund its election and the rock of an empty party treasury, Adamu obtained Buhari’s approval to raise the cost of forms to an amount almost double the four-year annual salary of the president, who officially earns roughly N14.1m yearly.

Yet, even at this scandalous rate, the party’s stock is oversubscribed. It is apparently so seduced by its own scandalous ingenuity that it has twice extended the sale of forms. However hard Adamu may try – and he has bullyishly made the point that the party needs tons of money to fund its campaign – it is difficult for him and his party to escape accusations of robbery by pretense.

Out of the 28 APC aspirants who have so far bought forms to contest the presidency, seven – Godswill Akpabio, Chris Ngige, Emeka Nwajiuba, Ogbonnaya Onu, Rotimi Amaechi, Timipre Silva, and Godwin Emefiele – are political appointees serving in Buhari’s government. The salaries of six of them in the last seven years is estimated at N504 million, that is, a yearly average of N72 million. This, of course, is minus Emefiele whose salary is on a different scale.

If they claim – as they all do – that the money is not theirs, then we’re compelled to ask what special lotion or charm they have been using to attract such extraordinary goodwill in a country that has gotten poorer in the last seven years than at any other time in its recent history. As of the last rough tally, APC had amassed about N3 billion, VAT-free income from the sale of presidential forms alone.

In the end, only one candidate will emerge. Like the true stock brokerage firm that it has become, however, the party will advise the losers to convert their form fees into investment in ministerial positions or the right to make significant appointments. There is no place for refunds.

Those who contested the position for chairmanship against Adamu and lost, for example, are still lining up outside the party secretariat waiting to get their N20 million refunds or whatever crumbs remain. But it doesn’t matter. With the extraordinary infusion of cash from the new sale of forms, the tent can always be expanded to create room for every scoundrel.

A friend suggested that the huge funds flowing into the APC’s account could be an avenue to launder money. But which government agency has the courage to question a group of peasants, herders or an old boys’ network for shelling out N100 million only to buy a lottery ticket from the ruling party for a messiah in its fold? That will be the day.

For now, those who don’t like what they’re seeing or what they’re hearing can comfort themselves with the thought that after nearly eight years of waiting, the ruling party may have finally paved the way to change by leveraging the scandalous ingenuity of a politician from the PDP, the same party that APC once despised.

Adamu is a gift that the PDP would regret losing. In two months of taking the helm, he has shown that he can both think – and work – outside the box. Whoever knew that the road to the presidency was this prosperous!

Nigeria Needs No President Now – Anyim

0
Anyim Pius Anyim

“When I became the  President of the Senate,” Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, a presidential aspirant on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, told Kaduna State delegates, May 9, in Kaduna, “the situation then at the Upper Chamber of the national Assembly was similar to what is obtainable now in Nigeria”.

“There was chaos, there was mistrust and the national Assembly was divided along ethnic and religious lines”, he lectured the attentive delegates.

There was high rate of instability in the leadership of the Senate, Anyim continued, and no president of the Senate then was sure of surviving the next day in the office. “But when it was my turn as president of the Senate,” he reminded the audience, “I brought everyone together as a member of the same family, a member of the same Senate and a member of the same country and we began to reason, think and see ourselves as one Nigeria”.

It’s the same passions, the same zeal and the same drive which I deployed to unite the Senate, to save the national Assembly from imminent collapse, that I have come to ask you to give me the opportunity to deploy now to save Nigeria from imminent destruction.

Asking the delegates to hold him by his words, Anyim boasted,  “I must say that since I left office, the solid foundation I laid then as president of the Senate has remained  indestructible and no impeachment has ever taken place in the Senate since after my tenure”.

Stating further, he told the apparently excited audience that he has been described variously too as the engine room of President Goodluck Jonathan administration assuring that, “it is the same experience, the same magic and the same propelling force that he is persuaded with to seek their support to restore the same  unity, the same stability and the same consensus among Nigerians as their president”.

Anyim reminded the delegates that the secret of his successes lies on the determination of a leader to build consensus among the people. Stating that he is that one Nigerian who finds home anywhere he goes, he equally assured the Kaduna delegates that his regime cannot leave them behind as he cannot take any decisions without consulting their leaders like Senators Ahmed Markafi, Aziz Zinge or former Vice President Namadi Sambo.

Because of his humility built on consensus orientation, Anyim said, these people and many others are my direct personal friends who I cannot say No to their requests. Anyim emphasized repeatedly that the problem of Nigeria is not just where the president comes from nor his religious inclinations but that the problem of Nigeria is indeed that of visionary leadership.

He told the delegates that the choice of a bad leader will begin the moment someone who does not understand the real challenges of the nation is nominated to lead Nigeria. He reiterated the fact that his many years not only in government but around the presidency have endowed him with the requisite knowledge to understand the challenges of the nation and how to handle them.

Anyim advised the delegates that the future and survival of Nigeria now rest squarely on their hands as the decisions they make in choosing the next presidential candidate of PDP will determine where the country will be headed to. “I therefore offered myself as your best choice to bear the Nigeria cross on your behalf”, he concluded.

OPINION: Peter Obi And The Popular Imagination

0

By Austin Tam-George

I served as Commissioner for Information in a PDP government in Rivers State a few years ago, but I was not a member of the party. In fact, I have never been a member of any political party in Nigeria.

Do not  blame me for this.

For anyone watching from outside, politics in Nigeria may seem like a peep into a dimly-lit psychiatric ward, where the inmates cannibalize one another in a deadly struggle for the Warden’s key.

But in this election season that has brought all kinds of people to the market square, Mr Peter Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, appears to have seized the popular imagination.

In an era of vulgar political exhibitionism, Mr Obi projects himself as a frugal, disciplined and thoughtful contender for the high office he seeks.

When he talks about public policy, Peter Obi speaks with an infectious earnestness of purpose that is not only rare in Nigerian politics, but in African political and developmental conversations.

You could tell where he stands on the important issues, because on a sector by sector basis, Mr Obi speaks about his ideas in clear, programmatic and actionable terms.

Secondly, by most accounts, Peter Obi left a decent record of service in Anambra State during his time as governor.

I have overheard sensible people complain about Peter Obi’s soft and ” feminine” voice, and they tend to  mock the ‘simplicity ‘ of his clothing.

This is laughable because, like most Nigerians, I doubt that the  acute security and economic problems that  have beset the country would suddenly disappear because of the seductive baritone of the next President.

In fact, from a communication standpoint, the tone of Peter’s voice and the consistent modesty of his physical appearance actually reinforce his authenticity.

Politics may be about a contest for power,  but for Peter Obi,  it is also about the ability to mobilize the power of  semiosis to convey a consistent message  –  a message of simplicity,  native intelligence and connection with everyday people.

This is why despite attending Colombia, Oxford, Harvard and other Ivy league universities around the world, Mr Obi continues to speak and  present himself as Peter Obi, from Anambra State, not Abraham Lincoln lite.

Despite being a billionaire entrepreneur, Peter Obi carries himself with quiet, unobtrusive dignity.

For decades, Mr Obi has conducted his philanthropy in education with the resilience of a lonely soldier ant. He has spent billions of his own money, building schools and sending abandoned children across the country back to school.

In the coming weeks, Mr Obi’s political destiny will be decided in the party primaries, by politicians with acute allergy for good governance, in the Peoples Democratic Party. (PDP).

Is Nigeria ready for Peter Obi?

APC Senatorial Aspirant Quits Over Cost Of Nomination Form; Laments ASUU Strike

0
Prof Emmanuel Dada

By Akinwale Kasali

An All Progressives Congress, APC, Chieftain and Ekiti Central Senatorial Aspirant, Prof. Emmanuel Dada, has lamented the decay in the Nation’s educational sector, faulting what he described as the insensitivity and lackadaisical approach of the Government to the lingering Academic Staff Union of University, ASUU, strike.

The United States of America based Educational don at the Lehigh University, USA, said poor funding of the country’s Universities and the carefree attitude of leaders in government has made the Nation’s  educational sector a laughing stock among its peers around the world.

Stressing further, Dada said this was so because all the people in government have their children schooling abroad, with children of the poor bearing the brunt.

He also condemned the high cost of nomination forms sold by his party to aspirants, describing the situation as appalling, which, according to him, will encourage corruption when such aspirants get to the office.

The Chemical Engineer at the Lehigh University, Bethlehem, PA, USA, who had planned to throw his hat in the 2023 Senatorial race in Ekiti Central said he had to withdraw from the race based on the cost of the nomination form.

Addressing a Press Conference in Maryland, Lagos, Dada expressed disappointment, saying with the situation on the ground, Nigeria’s democracy was witnessing what he described as “money baggie” kind of democracy “where the nomination process has been sold to the highest bidders out of reach of ordinary Nigerians.

“Today, marks another sad day in the history of our country, Nigeria wherein we are witnessing the current unacceptable “money baggie” of Nigeria democracy where the nomination process has been sold to the highest bidders out of reach of ordinary Nigerians,” he said.

Speaking further, the sitting Chairman, APC- USA chapter, Houston, maintained that when people buy forms at a high cost, there is the tendency them stealing money to recoup what they had spent, even as he argued that their entitlement for four years when they found themselves in the office is not up to the cost of the nomination form.

“Take for instance N100 million for nomination form for president, almost more than twice the basic salary for four- year term of the President! If this is not in your face signal that go out there and steal government money to recoup the political expenses and help yourself beyond that, then I do not know what else to call it.

“There is no justification for these astronomical price tags and neither can it be rationalized,” he declared.

He has, however, announced his withdrawal from the race, stressing that his aspiration to seek Senate seat was inspired to deliver a salvation message to Nigerians that it was time to “bell the cat,” by restructuring the country.

According to him, “we have been doing the same over and over and expecting a different result.”

He, however, said he would be consulting his people as to his next political move, adding that “the message may need a different vehicle, a different political party that is more inclined towards a better and more prosperous Nigeria.”

“Nigeria must restructure to a more true federation system, where we should go back to the 1963 Republican Constitution with the then three regions having their separate Constitution, separate police system, and separate economy and each grew in their own respective spaces and Nigeria was prosperous then.

“There is the need to restructure the country. The high amount fixed for nomination form is a fraud, I can’t risk paying N20 million for Senatorial form and one would be told later that the party has a candidate in mind for the race,” he said.

South West PDP Calls For Probe Of Buhari’s Ministers

By Ayodele Oni

Mixed reactions have continued to trail Wednesday’s directive to Federal Ministers nursing the ambition of Presidential and other elective offices in 2023  to resign.

Some say the order was belated while others commend President Mohamadu Buhari for it.

The South West People’s Democratic Party, (PDP) in its reaction accused political appointees in Buhari’s government of living in affluence,  and suddenly  becoming super rich.

It described the President’s order as ‘belated’ and called on the anti-graft agency, to probe their sources of stupendous wealth.

The charge was contained in a Press Statement signed by the Zonal Publicity Secretary of the party, Chief Sanya Atofarati on Thursday.

According to the statement,

“The belated decision of Buhari announcing the sack of his ministers who have suddenly become presidential aspirants while still serving was due to spontaneous reactions.

“Public resentment, criticisms from eminent Nigerians and civil society groups have condemned the brazen act of lawlessness and impunity, which had become the hallmark of the APC since the party came to power seven years ago

“Buhari would go down in history as the only president who inaugurated his cabinet ministers six months after assuming power and has refused to reshuffle or rejig the cabinet ever since thereby giving room for all kinds of funny character in government.

“Amidst grave insecurity in the land, collapsed economy, infrastructure decay, fuel crisis, ASUU prolonged strike, unemployment and high cost of living across board, those who are saddled with fixing the country are in a rat race to purchase presidential nomination forms.

“We drew the attention of the Nigerian public in 2018 when Fayemi as a Federal Minister, refused to resign his appointment before joining the governoship race in Ekiti.

“He used all the paraphernalia of office to force his way to the Government House, the same pattern the likes of Ngige, Akpabio, Malami and their co travellers are toeing.

“This impunity can not stand. Now that the sacked ministers have been stripped of their high horse mentality, the EFCC should begin an immediate probe of the sources of their stupendous wealth leading to the purchase of presidential nomination forms at outrageous N100m! going forward”

This could be described as one death too many. In a space of three weeks, the nation’s make-believe industry, Nollywood, has lost three of its best hands.

He was said to be suffering from a series of ailments and raising money for his treatment had become difficult because of the hard times.

2023: Jonathan ‘Secretly’ Joins APC In Bayelsa

Ex-President Goodluck Jonathan
Ex-President Goodluck Jonathan

By James Orji

After weeks of speculations, former President Goodluck Jonathan has secretly joined the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC the magazine has learnt.
The former pediment who is currently out of the country has been rumoured to be interested in contesting the presidential election next year. The last time he spoke on the issue, the former president told his teeming supporters who had stormed his Abuja home to lure him into the presidential race told them to “watch out” for his next moves.
Days after, a proxy group obtained the APC presidential nomination form for him. Jonathan however denied contracting any group to obtain the form on his behalf.
In a statement issued by Ikechukwu Eze, his media aide, the former leader said the group which obtained the form for Jonathan did not seek his consent to do so.
Jonathan, who lost the pesidency to Muhammadu Buhari in 2015, and has not been attending the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP meetings lately would later the same day, met with APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Adamu at the party’s secretariat in Abuja, raising more suggestions that he has finally joined the ruling party.
But quoting sources close to the former pesident, the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN claimed that Jonathan has registered with the APC at his ward in Otuoke his country home in Bayelsa state.
The source also reportedly claimed that Jonathan is expected to submit the presidential nomination form on Thursday.
Recall that the party had earlier fixed the date of submission of nomination forms for Tuesday this week, but later moved it to Friday, as top sources in the party say the postponement was to enable Jonathan meet the deadline.
NAN quoted the source to have said, “Several bigwigs of the party have also been calling Jonathan to pledge their loyalty and support to the former president,” the source was quoted as saying.
“At least three top African leaders called the former president on the matter. They all urged him to run.
“One of them specifically told him that it didn’t make sense travelling all over Africa settling disputes only to shy away from leadership responsibility in his home country.
“Another reminded him of the implication of failing to put the experiences he garnered as a former Nigerian president and as a continental statesman to good use.”
Meanwhile, the magazine learnt that Jonathan who was yesterday appointed to the international advisory board of the European Corporate Council on Africa and the Middle East, ECAM Council is billed to return to the country by the weekend.
