Defiant traders are currently counting their losses at Apongbon Under Bridge as the Lagos State Government has demolished shops, kiosks, make shift, shanties and other structures under the Bridge.

Following the expiration of the Wednesday 27th April, 2022, ultimatum given by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for all traders under the  Bridge to vacate the area, the Lagos Task Force moved in with bulldozers and began demolition of shops under the Apongbon Bridge.

The demolition is coming several weeks after the Apongbon Bridge was razed by fire due to activities of the traders, leading the Federal and the Lagos State Governments to issue a seven-day eviction notice to the traders with shops under the bridge.

The Apongbon Under Bridge traders were caught unawares as early as 9.00 a.m, when the Lagos State Taskforce  moved  to the site with their bulldozers, and began demolishing the shops.

Security officials assembled at the foot of the burnt bridge in their patrol vehicles, monitoring the demolition of the shops and other structures.

Other shop owners and traders in the shops across the road from the bridge were not allowed to open for business.

Also, the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) personnel were on ground to clear the rubble from the demolished structures into their waiting vans.

Owners of the demolished shops  pleaded with Governor Sanwo-Olu to be magnanimous, appealing that the Government relocates them to a new site, as their means of livelihood has been destroyed.

South West Leaders Reject Dr Agunloye As National Secretary Of SDP

Dr Olu Agunloye, who swapped his position as Acting National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party, (SDP) and opted to be Acting National Secretary is in for more troubles.

Before his resignation as National Chairman, Dr Agunloye had been suspended by his ward at Akoko area of Ondo state.

Again, the South-West leaders of the Party say they are rejecting the appointment of Dr Agunloye as the Acting National Secretary of the party.

The leaders made this known in a statement in Akure by their spokesperson, Prince Dele Ogunbamerun, who is also the Chairman of the Ondo State chapter of the party.

They claimed that Agunloye, a former Minister of State for Defence (Navy), had been suspended by his ward (Ward 10) in Akoko North-West Local Government Area of Ondo State over alleged anti-party activities.

The party leaders noted that Agunloye’s alleged involvement in anti-party activities and disregard for the party’s constitution, was not acceptable, which necessitated his suspension.

The embattled chieftain and former Minister of Power and Steel, said his resignation was to strengthen the party’s chances ahead of the 2023 general elections.

The party leaders said that Agunloye’s appointment as National Secretary of the party was null and void, following his suspension.

The leaders, however, commended the party for appointing Alhaji Sheu Musa Gabam as the Acting National Chairman, pending its forthcoming Congress.

“We hail the emergence of Alhaji Musa Gabam as National Chairman from the position of National Secretary in the absence of the Deputy National Chairmen and after noting the voluntary resignation of Agunloye.

“The emergence of Agunloye as the Acting National Secretary is on a faulty ground, an insult to the SDP Constitution and embarrassment to party faithful in Ondo State.

“Agunloye has been duly suspended and he cannot be appointed into any position as long as his suspension subsists.”

They urged the leadership of the party to save it from further embarrassment and give the South-West opportunity to nominate a “suitable candidate” for the position of the national secretary.

“While resignation is allowed in the constitution of SDP, swapping is totally not part of our constitution.

“The resolution at the National Executive Council (NEC) is that since a presidential candidate is coming from the Southern part of the country, all party positions for the North in the current zoning arrangements should go to the South and vice versa.

“The implications of this is that what moves is position and not individual, and it can only be effected during the congress.

“Now that Dr Agunloye has resigned, he is neither the National Chairman nor the National Secretary.”

APC Chieftain, Senator Ken Nnamani, Slams Party Over N100m Presidential Forms, Declares Interest

Political watchers say Senator Nnamani’s entry is not expected to make any impact on an already crowded field, especially, given his age.

A former Senate President, Ken Nnamani has criticised his Political Party, the All Progressives Congress, APC, for its price tag on the 2023 Presidential forms.

Nnamani, 73 years old, while declaring interest in running for the seat of the President said: “My view is that we should work towards reducing the cost of nomination for political offices so that we can create an inclusive environment for our dynamic youths and women who may not have access to much wealth but have a great intellect and public spirit to enter into public service through political recruitment.

“I hold the view that high costs of election are not aligned to our socio-economic realities in terms of comparative per capital income and purchasing power of Nigerians.

“But ultimately, the pressure for drastic reduction in nomination fees for public offices will come when citizens and citizens group begin to play more active role in demanding and presenting credible and capable persons for elective  offices rather than allow money bags force themselves into such offices.

“I believe that the nomination fees that parties ask aspirants to pay for elective offices in Nigeria need rethinking in order to improve the inclusion of youths, women and most Nigerians who earn salaries in an economy that has become distressed, largely on account of global economic meltdown and domestic insecurity and low productivity.”

Nnamani said he would back the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to lay guidelines for the parties to regulate the cost of  nomination and campaign expenses.

He, nevertheless, said he would pay the N100m for the purchase of the forms.

On why he is entering the race, he said it was time to deliver hope and prosperity to Nigeria in the “midst of despair and poverty.”

His words:  “A few days ago, I expressed the intention to join the contest for the APC 2023 Presidential Primary. Now, I give firm declaration that I will purchase the nomination forms in a couple of days.

“I am aspiring to be President in 2023 because I believe that at this period of grave crisis, Nigeria needs to be reinvented to be a modern, democratic state that prioritizes the socio-economic wellbeing of its citizens; to be restructured from inefficient consumption to production; and to be led with integrity and compassion.

“I, also, believe that every period in the history of a country requires a particular kind of leader. Nigeria faces very tough challenges now more than ever.

“In 2015, we needed a Buhari to take Nigeria away from the misdirection of the Peoples Democratic Party. In 2023, we need a leader who knows how to work across the divides and lead a coalition for competent and dedicated Nigeria to lay foundations for social stability and prosperity.

“My pedigree and previous accomplishments in high office in Nigeria lend credence to the fact that I am a good fit to the challenges of this moment in Nigerian history.”

Nnamani was Senate President during the President Olusegun Obasanjo Government when the South-east which turn it was to produce the Senate President kept changing the occupant of the office as if it was changing its underwears – Senators Evan Enwerem, Chuba Okadigbo Adolf Wabara, Anyim Pius Anyim, Nnamani.

He was, also, the Senate President when Obasanjo’s bid for a third term in office was thrown out by the Senate.

Until the recent past, Nnamani, from Enugu State, was a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP before he decamped to the APC under which he is aspiring to the office of the President.

Senator Nnamani is not expected, according to political watchers, to make any impact on his aspiration in a field already crowded by younger and better placed aspirants in both the APC and PDP.

Bereft of Home Support, Senator Okorocha Pays N100m, Picks Presidential Forms

Weeks after he declared interest in the Presidential seat in 2023, former Governor of Imo State and the Senator representing Imo-west, Rochas Okorocha, has purchased both the Expression of Interest and Nomination forms for the sum of N100m.

In the weeks following his declaration, not much was heard of his campaign, and not a few people began to have the feeling that, perhaps, he had lost interest, especially when the trio of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and Chibuike Amaechi had declared interest in the same seat.

But Okorocha, known for his oratorial skills, has, finally, shown his seriousness by purchasing the N100m forms.

A press release signed by his Media Adviser,   Sam Onwuemeodo, confirmed his purchase of the forms.

He said: “With every sense of humility, we are delighted to inform the general public that , His Excellency,  Senator Rochas Okorocha, today, Friday , April 29, 2022 , picked or procured or obtained , the Expression of INTEREST AND NOMINATION FORMS of the All Progressives Congress, APC, for the 2023 Presidency, at the Party’s National Secretariat, Abuja.

“The time was 12. 25pm. lt was a historic outing. And the atmosphere was clement and exciting.

“With this juicy and lofty development, Okorocha is set for the Party’s Presidential primary.  And with no doubts in our GODLY minds , it will end in praise.

Okorocha has never hidden his broad  zeal and seeming passion,  to lead this Country , for good .   He has remained consistent and persistent in this regard.

“We dedicate the Expression of INTEREST AND NOMINATION FORMS to GOD, who orders the affairs of men and women.

“We appeal for the prayers of  all men and women of good spirits and good tidings.

“With GOD,  nothing is impossible to them that believe.  And to the Glory of God, Okorocha believes.

“We had earlier dedicated Okorocha’s presidential ambition or pursuit to God.  Asking him (GOD) to take absolute control of the whole enterprise, since when he says YES  to a project, nobody can afford to say No. This is our take- home. Our bidding. Our confidence.

“We ask GOD to bless all and sundry.”

Okorocha will be going into the APC Presidential Primary without the support of the Imo APC. The delegates are in firmly in the clenched hands of the State Governor, Hope Uzodimma.

Most of his supporters have decamped to the People’s Democratic Party, PDP.

Senator Ifeanyi Ararume who he was partnering with against Uzodinma is in the camp of another Presidential aspirant –  Transportation Minister, Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi.

2023: Bala Is On Bail From EFCC, Not Qualified To Run For Presidency

If actually Udenta is a Professor and as learned as he claims to be, he ought to know better than to egg on a man (Bala Mohammed) on bail from EFCC, to dream of running for President of our country. Nigerians should hold people like Udenta responsible for the decline in the quality of our democracy.

If we do not want to attack any of us in public, we shouldn’t start it at all. I do not know what my brother and friend, Gov. Bala Mohammed was thinking of when he attempted his failed ridicule of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar publicly.

The simple question of whether he would step down for Alhaji Atiku Abubakar or not, could have elicited a more decent response like: “We haven’t reached that bridge yet. We’ll cross it when we get there,” or “If the need arises, I’m sure aspirants can step down for our best.” Wouldn’t the opposition use Bala’s statement against Atiku, if Atiku Abubakar emerged presidential candidate for PDP?

Done with this brief tutorial on decorum of speech and reasoning, and though I would not want to trade words with Udenta, as we do not have anything in common, and he is free to work for his stomach infrastructure, I am constrained to reply Udenta’s diatribe.

I have read his convoluted reasons for working for Bala Mohammed and I can only deduce from his reasoning, a man out to make money. If actually Udenta is a Professor and as learned as he claims to be, he ought to know better than to egg on a man on bail from EFCC, to dream of running for President of our country. Nigerians should hold people like Udenta responsible for the decline in the quality of our democracy.

I stand on my reaction to Bala Mohammed’s attempted affront.  Being a fellow Senator of the 6th Senate, I can relate in some ways with him and a direct response from him, rather than response from a Professor I’m yet to quantify his level of decent reasoning, would have been better appreciated. I also doubt if Bala Mohammed was privy to Udenta’s reply, as he could not counter any of my assertions, neither did he address them, but rather chose personal attack.

If Udenta can refer to Bala Mohammed as a consensus candidate of the North, even when the same North has come out to debunk whatever was written and made public by distinguished Professor Ango Abdullahi, it reveals his level of sycophancy and deceit. Why lead someone on, if not to defraud him? My little research on him shows he’s an opportunist.

Udenta with all the political prowess he has ascribed to himself, should have been running for office and not chasing crumbs. At his age, experiences and betrayals he ascribed to himself dating as far back as Abiola era presidential politics, Udenta should have done better for himself, rather than massaging his greed all the time. Or haven’t journalists risen high in politics in Nigeria? And Udenta claiming to be a journalist, I am surprised he did not consider the role of journalists as the conscience of the people, in throwing his weight behind a man, Bala Mohammed, who publicly has supported marauding undocumented Fulani terrorists that have tormented the South East and the rest of the country; killing, raping and maiming. How posterity would judge him should be his main preoccupation as a journalist, if he has a conscience.

Apparently, Udenta is a man Friday, ready to be hired by the gullible that fall for his doubtful credentials.

In his own words, he has always worked against his Igbo people, Ezeife _et al. I guess he sure knows where his bread is buttered.

His people, Ndigbo, are desirous of politics of Presidency to the South East, he is busy giving puerile reasons for supporting Bala Mohammed.

He is free to support whoever he chooses to. It is his prerogative, but I dare him to preach Bala Mohammed to delegates from the South East, if he is not working for Bala Mohammed for money.

I have made my choice based on my belief in the character, intelligence and ability of my choice – Alhaji Atiku Abubakar,  Wazirin Adamawa, to effectively lead, and pilot this country out of the doldrums.

I refuse to be distracted by rants of a paid servant.

In many places politicians are subjects of scorn and derision. And for good reason. They lie to the public as a matter of course, have absolutely no intention to honour their oath of office or their promises. The compliment is sometimes returned with particularly aggrieved persons throwing rotten eggs, tomatoes or shoes at politicians engaged in walkabout in England, France and elsewhere.

Here in Nigeria people sometimes show their displeasure by shouting “yehoo!”, “barawo!” or “ole!”.

The degeneration in the Nigerian specie of politician is alarming, a factor of the abysmal lack of accountability of public officers over the years. Finagling with public funds which should earn culprits years in the slammer or public execution, as in China become a means to run for higher office.

Some politicians now think it is all a game – one with no rules, no honour and no integrity needed. For them all is fair in politics as in war. Compromise has become the only governing principle of their existence..  Belonging to a political party means nothing other than as a vehicle to ride unto power. Parties are not grounded on ideas, programmes or ideology. There is no belief in principle or commitment to civic responsibility. Which is why politicians are acrobats jumping from one party to the other and back again. The story is told of one fellow who made the rounds with five political parties until he found one nondescript party that agreed to endorse his candidacy.

Today who can with any certainty tell the difference between the APC and the PDP for instance or who is in which party at any point in time?

The price the country is paying for this indulgence has become a very grave one indeed such that no one is addressing the serious issues that confront its very existence . And politics which is a time-honoured process for a society to choose its leaders is being discredited.

Many of our politicians seem not to apprehend the danger here and are plunging further and farther into the murk.

Let us begin with the number of those who say they want to be president. Surely, majority of those who have announced themselves cannot be serious. Other than media announcements and adding to the garbage on our streets from their falling posters how is one to take the announcements by Mohammed Hayatudeen, Ibikunle Amosun, Adams Oshiomhole, or the Cross River state entrant, Ben Ayade seriously?

Much comic relief is provided by such pretenders to the throne as Rivers governor Nyesom Wike, Kogi state governor Yahaya Bello and ….this other fellow. Pardon me I forget his name.

Yet the state of Nigeria is no laughing matter. Neither should the contest to succeed President Mohammed Buhari be an opportunity for the usual horse-trading or massive financial inducements as has become the manner with many. The rule of thumb should be that anyone who bribes to achieve a  position such as the presidency is not qualified for it quite apart from being a criminal.

Our present political predicament bears restating. The process for candidates to emerge for the 2023 presidential election is being confounded by the impression that the presidency is for all-comers. Or is there a certain method to the present madness?

Some ‘candidates’ may be doing it to seek attention, not wanting to be left in the shadows of others who have already declared. Others may be seeking to use their professed ambition as a bargaining chip for a future demand. Politicians everywhere do this and cash their chips when the opportunity arises.

But there may be something more sinister afoot. There is now strong suspicion that a lot of the declared ambitions are by phantom candidates, individuals who are not at all serious and who for the right consideration will step down for their benefactors thus presenting the impression of a bandwagon. This stratagem, it is said, is by certain candidates in both parties who are known to be flush with funds. That is why in political circles there is now so much talk about bullion vans, opening of  Dubai-based financial spigots and impending shortage of dollars in the market.

It is reassuring that money has never been the determinant of who rules Nigeria even if the process had in the past been rigged against the best emerging. But this time Nigerians must make their voices loud and clear to the political parties that the sun must be allowed to shine on the one or two roses in their midst that seek to bloom for everyone’s sake.

Update: LASG Rescinds Decision On Eid-Il-Fitri Holiday, Conforms With FG’s Directives

Sequel to the earlier circular by the Lagos State Government on the Eid-Il-Fitri and May Day Celebration on the Thursday 5th May, 2022, resumption of activities in the State, it has rescinded its decision and conformed with the Federal Government directives on the Monday 2nd and Tuesday 3rd May, 2022 holiday.

The Lagos State Government has now announced a new date for the Id-El Fitr holiday, canceling the earlier one it circulated.

According to Circular No 23 issued by the State’s Head of Service, Mr Hakeem Muri-Okunola, the holiday is now effective Monday and Tuesday, only.

The new announcement supersedes the earlier announcement via circular no 18 which gave Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday for the May Day and Id-El Fitr holidays.

The new announcement now brings the State in conformity with the Federal Government which had earlier announced Monday and Tuesday.

To mark the May Day, the State Governor, Mr Babajide Olusola Sanwo-olu, has approved a March past of the various Trade Unions in the State on Sunday at Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, Lagos.

‘’Whilst wishing all Public Servants, especially our Muslim Brothers and Sisters who observed fasting during the Holy Month of Ramadan, a wonderful celebration, members of Staff are enjoined to stay safe during both celebrations

‘‘Public Servants in the State are therefore to disregard the resumption date stated in CIRCULAR NO 018 of 27th April, 2022 and note that work resumes on Wednesday, 4th May, 2022 at 8:00am prompt’’, the Head of Service added.

In a Press Statement by the Lagos State Government through the Ministry of Education, Office of Education Quality Assurance (OEQA), notifies all public and private schools in the state to observe Monday 2nd and Tuesday 3rd of May as public holiday as declared by the Federal Government of Nigeria.

The Director General, OEQA, Mrs. Abiola Seriki-Ayeni enjoined all proprietors and school administrators to ensure that students resume on Wednesday 4th May, 2022 and disregard Thursday 5th May, 2022 as previously embedded in the Lagos State Harmonized Academic Calendar 2021/2022 session.

While wishing parents, proprietors, teachers and students a happy holiday, the Director General enjoined students to continue to shun all forms of social vices during the ID-EL-FITR and May Day celebrations and parents should monitor the activities of their wards at home.

Fayemi, Another Tinubu’s Political Godson Challenges Him

The number of the political godsons  of the Lagos State strongman, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, abandoning him, is increasing. They are exerting their independence from his political empire, and charting their own course.

The urbane Ekiti State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi, has just thrown his hat into the Presidential ring, come 2023. Fayemi has, for months, been consulting on the viability of his aspiration.

On May 4, 2022, Fayemi will declare his ambition to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023. Venue is the Congress Hall of the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja.

He has termed his declaration UNFOLDING THE AGENDA

Fayemi is believed to have been, strongly, backed by Tinubu during his first term as Governor. He was, however, defeated by PDP’s Ayo Fayose in his second term bid. But he made a come-back in 2019 when he roundly defeated the candidate of the PDP, sponsored by Fayose.

Speculations are that he did not quite have Tinubu’s backing for his second term, and since then, their relationship has gradually become weak.

Fayose is the third Tinubu’s political godson who has openly challenged him. The first was the Minister for Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, who pleaded God’s wrath upon Tinubu.

The second was Vice President Yemi Osinbajo who declared interest in the 2023 Presidential election after Tinubu had declared his own interest in same office.\

And, now, Fayemi.

There is no doubt that these declarations will have an effect on the number of delegates Tinubu thought he had in the bag.

For the records, Fayemi is the Chairman of the influential Nigeria Governors Forum. If his colleagues, especially, in the  APC  back him, he could make more impact than expected at the APC Presidential Primary.

Governorship candidate of the All Progressive Congress, (APC) in the Ekiti State June election, Biodun Abayomi, has received the nod of President Mohamadu Buhari to carry the flag of the Party at the election.

Abayomi, was received at the State House in Abuja on Friday, where he was officially presented with the flag of APC signifying his endorsement for the June election.

A statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Media, Femi Adesina, stated that President Buhari  declared that “You have my best wishes.

“You have served Ekiti State in many capacities, including as Chief of Staff, Commissioner, and Secretary to the State Government. Being Governor will just be continuity of service. I honestly wish you the best of luck.”

With those words, President Muhammadu Buhari Friday at State House, Abuja, presented the party’s flag to Mr Abiodun Oyebanji, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the gubernatorial election, scheduled for June 18, 2022.

The candidate was led to the President by National Chairman of the party, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, the National Secretary, Senator Iyiola Omisore, and Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State.

The National Chairman said APC was planning to win the contest, “by the grace of God,” adding that it was the reason the candidate was being presented for presidential blessings.

Governor Fayemi said Oyebanji had been involved in governance in Ekiti in the past 20 years, and has acquitted himself creditably.
