2023: Saraki Makes Strong Bid For Presidency After Atiku’s Sokoto Gaffe

0

By Tosin Olatokunbo

Bukola Saraki, a former Senate President says he’s the best among presidential hopefuls having served in both executive and legislative capacities.

Saraki, the scion of late Abubakar Olusola Saraki, the strongman of Kwara politics and a medical doctor-turned politician ruled the state for eight years. He was also the Senate President in the Eight Senate.

The former Governor of the state of Harmony as Kwara is widely known, disclosed this in Owerri, Imo while addressing the state chapter of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP.

Watchers of the opposition party have described the quest for the sole presidential ticket of the PDP as a three-horse race between Saraki, Atiku Abubakar, a former Vice President and Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state.

Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto state, another PDP aspirant is regarded as the weeping child in the race, even though he regards himself as a bridge between the old and new generations of politicians in the party.

But, Saraki said he’s the best among the three having acquired experience as a governor and legislature.

The former senate president spoke ahead of the May 28/29 presidential primary of the PDP, saying he was the right man for the country’s top job.

According to him, , “I am a detribalised Nigerian. As a Senate President, I stood for what was right. My experience puts me high above other aspirants. I have both the executive and legislative experiences to lead Nigeria and the private sector experience too. Restructuring can’t just happen.

‘You need a president who is courageous to do that. As a Senate President I said that fuel subsidy was a scam. I have the courage to lead Nigeria.

“The South-East and North Central have not produced President. If somebody from the South-East emerges, I will support the person. Nigeria needs a team player to unite Nigeria. I am a team player.”

Meanwhile, keen watchers of the PDP and former Vice President Abubakar say the decision of the Adamawa state born presidential aspirants to recant a statement earlier made to condemn the killing of Deborah Samuel, a Christian student of the Shehu Shagari College of Education, might affect his chances in next year’s presidential election if he emerges the party’s candidate.

Atiku, in an earlier tweet condemning the gruesome murder said, “There cannot be a justification for such gruesome murder. Deborah Yakubu was murdered, and all those behind her death must be brought to justice. My condolences to her family and friends.”

He later deleted the tweet which he claimed was not authorized by him.

“This evening I received information that a post was made that doesn’t agree with my orders. I use this to announce that any post without AA is not from me. May God protect – AA,” Atiku said.

Opinion: Osinbajo: Senator Adeyeye and his dishonest thesis

0

By Ajibola Basiru

I read with deep interest an article published in Premium Times by my predecessor in the Senate as the representative of Osun Central Senatorial District, Senator Professor Sola Adeyeye. I believe the description of him at the foot of the article as “the senator for Osun Central in the National Assembly” is clealy erroneous as since June 2019, I have been representing Osun Central Senatorial District in the Senate Chamber of the National Assembly. Nonetheless, I find it curious that a news organ will not know that the Spokesperson of the Senate is the Senator representing Osun Central Senatorial District.

The central thesis of Senator Adeyeye is that Professor Yemi Osinbajo is the preferred aspirant of President Mohammadu Buhari on the account of what he considered to be the loyalty of Professor Yemi Osinbajo to the President and alleged inadequacies of other aspirants particularly Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

In pursuing this thesis for which he is apparently expressing the eventual triumph of Professor Osinbajo, he predicated his thesis on the following contentions: that a person can only attain the office of the President if he is supported by those he referred to as the establishment: that religion has almost lost relevance ultimately in the Nigeria political context; that the President was referring to Professor Osinbajo when he answered the question on who is the favourite among the aspirants in a live television interview; that President Buhari will anoint Professor Osinbajo as appreciation of the later’s loyalty; that most Buhari men are against Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu; and of course making defamatory and denigrating remarks against Asiwaju Tinubu.

The Theory of Establishment as the only route to the Presidency appears to be the typification of Nigerian democracy by the writer. Senator Adeyeye asserted and I think rather firmly that “if the establishment does not want you, you can never win the presidency”. I am at a loss to see the factual and empirical basis for this assertion in view of the recent political history of Nigeria that saw the presidency of President Buhari dislodging an incumbent President and a political party that has controlled the Presidency for about 16 years before the 2015 electoral loss. Which establishment want President Buhari and the APC in 2015! I see here a clear attempt to use a banal assertion to becloud the spirited efforts of the coalition that ripened to the APC and the struggle of our leaders like President Buhari, Chief Bisi Akande, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Chief Ogbonnaya Onu among others that ensure the presidency for the APC against all odds. Perhaps, Segun Adeniyi’s book with the title “Against the Run of Play” comes to mind.

Another banal assertion by the Distinguished Senator is that “religion as a factor in Nigerian political outcomes is overrated, especially at the national level.” Beyond this mere assertion, I am yet to see the empirical study that support the assertion. His further assertion that “when it matters, realpolitik always trumps religion” leaves the gaping questions of “when realpolitik matter?” and “who determines when realpolitik matters?” I see in the assertion an overly dangerous assumption that mass of the people and their opinions can be easily discounted in a democratic polity. To dismiss with a stroke of pen the possible effects of religion in a largely traditional society like ours in democratic choices is far from being profound. Is the Senator oblivious of the fact that Professor Yemi Osinbajo became Vice President in 2105 largely due to the orchestrated campaign again a Muslim/Muslim ticket because President Buhari was perceived to be an Islamic extremist and hence the party needed a Pastor from the South West to ensure the candidacy is sellable to the southerners?

My sense in reading the article is that people are outrightly discounted in our democratic enterprise, what matters from his theory is the predisposition of what he termed the “establishment”. Therefore, the mission for the Distinguished Senator is simple, market the aspiration of Professor Osinbajo and make disparaging and even outright defamatory assertions against other aspirants, particularly Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to curry the favour, nay the endorsement of “the establishment” for his aspirant. I indeed find very interesting that the Senator readily asserted with apparent finality “that Nigeria is not a land of political revolution.” These are indeed very interesting times!

According to Professor Adeyeye, “If the North thought Osinbajo a problem on religious grounds, he wouldn’t have been accepted as the vice president to a Buhari as president”. So, we are being told that it is the “North” that accepted Osinbajo as the Vice-President? Are we being taken on a journey of amnesia on how Professor Osinbajo became the Vice President by mere assertion and deliberate distortion? So, it is the “Northern establishment” that suo motu “notice(d) the genius behind the string of legal victories – Professor Yẹmí Osìnbàjò” and his emergence is not part of the negotiated political arrangements with our party Leaders in the South West after the victory of the All Progressives Congress (APC)?

While, I am not denying the astuteness of Professor Osinbajo as a legal scholar, to simply attribute his emergence as the Vice President to being “noticed” by the “Northern establishment” as a “genius” is to distort and deliberately falsify political development and history we all know and partook in.

The writer is obviously claiming to have conducted census of the President Buhari’s foot soldiers against Asiwaju Bola Tinubu as he claimed “let him name one Buhari foot soldier in Tinubu’s camp and I will name a hundred that are not there”. Perhaps he can oblige the public with result of his census of anti Tinubu Buhari foot soldiers to back his assertions! In making comment on President Buhari’s comment that the presidency is not for sale to the highest bidder, perhaps the Senator is oblivious of the fact that the President has access to information of the camp already reported as wooing delegates with cash gifts in Naira and Dollar. Surely, we wise citizens are paying attention!

That the Senator is not content with selling his aspirant to those he called “the establishment” without attacking Asiwaju is revealed by this obviously deprecatory and defamatory assertion unfortunately penned by a personality I have so much respect for:

“Yes, Tinubu has the structure, he has amassed the money and is already throwing it around left, right and centre, but the truth is that many are just fleecing him at the moment. Many signals within the party and within the establishment indicate he is on a hiding to nothing. Many see Tinubu as a greedy blackmailer who must be kept away from Aso Rock because he has the capacity to create an entirely different political patronage structure that can alienate the ‘Class of 1966’.”

The above remarks revealed a desperate move to disparage the character and reputation of Asiwaju Tinubu and must be interrogated to reveal that they were made with bile and guile. Asiwaju Tinubu has been out of office since 2007 and has not held office and has never been indicted for corruption and breach of public trust. So, we can ask our Senator, when has it become a crime to be rich. Where is the evidence of Asiwaju throwing “money around left, right and centre”? Baseless allegation from a Distinguished Senator is rather mind boggling! It is rather outlandish to hide under the one finger of “many” to call Asiwaju Tinubu “a greedy blackmailer”! Let the Senator identify a single patronage given to Asiwaju Tinubu since the inception of President Buhari’s administration. Then talking of blackmail, who is Asiwaju Tinubu blackmailing? President Buhari or Professor Osinbajo or “the establishment “? It is quite unfortunate that a mind trained in science will make disparaging remarks without any evidence and hiding under unidentifiable “many”.

Apart from unfounded denigrating remarks, there was also the intention to rally the “establishment” against Asiwaju Tinubu when he commented that Asiwaju is someone “who must be kept away from Aso Rock because he has the capacity to create an entirely different political patronage structure that can alienate the ‘Class of 1966’.”

The apparent desperation of the commentator to rally the “establishment” against the candidacy of Asiwaju Tinubu was brought out with more potency when he again asserted: “Incidentally, Tinubu went full throttle to politically terminate Ambode when the latter tinkered with the patronage structure in Lagos. As far as the establishment are concerned, Tinubu has been amply rewarded with the free rein they’ve given him over Lagos and its purse strings. Giving him Aso Rock is class suicide for the establishment.”

Many issues may be raised from the above. Of what relevance is issue of Ambode to the choice of Nigerian presidency? Is it that it is “the establishment” that gifted Lagos to Asiwaju as a reward? And reward for what? The innuendo of control of purse of Lagos is another evidence of the liberty the Senator took in making defamatory assertions in his article. The assertion on “giving” out Aso Rock depicts the obvious understanding of the Senator that our democracy has become a spoil of war. Perhaps, the Senator will need to elucidate how Asiwaju Tinubu winning the Presidential election will constitute “class suicide for the establishment”. I think this is a mere exercise in scaremongering and calling a dog a bad name to kill it.

I don’t think it is necessary to comment on equally defamatory assertions against Godwin Emefiele, the Central Bank Governor, as it has become a pattern in coming against any perceived opponent of the writer’s aspirant. However, I find it rather strange the “new revelation” that the late Abba Kyari “was said” to have been working closely with Tinubu to frustrate the nomination of Professor Osinbajo as the Vice President in 2019. Apparently, the Senator was not sure of himself on that fact and therefore used the phrase “was said” which in legal parlance means what he stated was mere hearsay. It speaks to the motive of the commentator that such revelation could be based on what “was said! Also, as a student of logic, I cannot find the sequence in the contention that because Buhari did not replace Osinbajo as vice president in 2019 “is a strong indication that Buhari thinks him worthy of succeeding him in 2023”. That is a rather outlandish proposition!

I wouldn’t know that Distinguished Senator Adeyeye has developed talent for mind reading when he said the President was referring to Professor Osinbajo in a Channels Television interview with Maupe Ogun. However, if the Senator was cocksure of having read the mind of the President at that interview, one will think the subsequent paragraphs of his article campaigning to the President to help make the case with the “Northern establishment that Osinbajo is the best bet for Nigeria” is needless! It seems my Distinguished leader is not convinced himself of the mind reading. And I am at a loss to understand what the Senator meant when he said: “For a man who knows what Osinbajo has endured as vice president, he knew what he was talking about.” Is it that the Vice-President has been a beast of burden and Nigerian Presidency is a compensation and not about service?

Speaking about loyalty, is it the case that party leaders and supporters who are outside the government are not loyal to the government both in birthing it into power and sustaining it. The price for loyalty cannot and ought not to be exclusive preserve of those who have been in the corridor of power for about seven years. Can anyone in his right mind doubt the commitment and loyalty of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the emergence and sustenance of the APC and its government under the leadership of President Buhari?

Jude Chigbo Ihezie

By Charles Igbo

He was 39 years old. Good looking. Brimming with a lot of energy. He had lived in Vietnam for 10 years. Meaning that he was 29 years old when he went there to live.

He had become one of them. Or so he thought. He even married one of them – a Vietnamese – with whom he had two children. He was a well-known business man and was doing well in his businesses, which included the exportation of some Vietnamese products to Africa. He was comfortable.

But in the morning of Wednesday, May 4, 2022, death came calling for this Nigerian Imo State-born Jude Chigbo Ihezie. Assassins stormed his apartment and murdered him in a most gruesome manner. He lived in Ve Linh Village, Phn Linh Commune, Soc Son Hanoi.

It is not known whether his wife and children were present when he was killed. But the merchants of death first beat him up, and then stabbed him many times on the chest. He gave up on his way to the hospital. He had already lost so much blood.

The Nigerian Embassy in Vietnam is mourning, and has confirmed and condemned Ihezie’s gruesome murder.

36 Hours After Deborah’s Callous Murder, Buhari Finally Says Something

0
Muhammadu Buhari

By Gideon Njoku

The Nation had waited for President Muhammadu Buhari to speak to, especially, his aggrieved and agitated and shell-shocked citizens. The bereaved family had waited for a word of consolation from their President. They had waited for a strong condemnation of the brutal murder of their daughter, Deborah Samuel, a Christian second year student of Home Economics of the Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto by their President.

They had waited for a marching order from him to Security Agents to arrest the perpetrators. Afterall, President Buhari should be the Nation’s Chief Consoler, the Chief Comforter in times of grief and agony and confusion and sorrow.

None of these came, at least, not when it was expected. They came many hours after the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Catrine Leign,  had condemned  the gruesome murder of Deborah and urges the Nigeria Police to go after the perpetrators of the act which has soiled Nigeria’s image before the civilised World.

Deborah was, on Thursday, May 12, stoned and clubbed to near death, then set ablaze by her student-colleagues for, allegedly, speaking in an unflattering manner of the Holy Prophet Mohammed.

It was considered blasphemous. They videod her killing, jubilating, and posted the gory scenes on the Social Media.

She was said to have condemned the postings of Religion-related issues on the Class WhatsApp Platform instead of what it was created for – information on tests, lectures, examinations, etc.  Some Muslim students found that offensive and blasphemous, especially, as she had allegedly, proclaimed “Holy Ghost Fire.”  But there was another angle to it.

One Azzaman Azzaman in a post said Deborah Was framed and murdered for refusing to date a Muslim colleague of hers. Whatever, Deborah’s murder was greeted by anger snd outrage across Nigeria. But it was also justified by Muslim fundamentalists.

With no word from their President, many Nigerians worried, not knowing exactly what to believe. But 36 hours later, President Buhari reacted in series of Tweets.

While he condemned Deborah’s brutal murder, the President reminded Religious and Community leaders to ask their citizens to be more responsible while exercising their freedom of speech.

Some analysts have interpreted that to mean a mild rebuke by the President  of Deborah for being reckless in her remarks to her colleagues on the content of their Class WhatsApp Platform.

A Press Release from the State House said:

“President @MBuhari strongly condemns the resort to self-help by the mob in sokoto, resulting in violence, destruction and killing of a second year student of Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto, Deborah Samuel following an allegation that she had blasphemed Muhammad (SAW), the Prophet of Islam on Thursday.

“President Buhari said the news of the killing of the young lady by fellow students was a matter of concern and demanded an impartial, extensive probe into all that happened before and during the incident.

“The President noted that Muslims all over the world demand respect for the Holy Prophets, incl Isah (Alaihissalaam, Jesus Christ) & Muhammad (SAW) but where transgressions occur, as alleged to be the case in this instance, the law does not allow anyone take matters into their hands.

“Moreover, religious leaders preach that it is not for the believer to judge the actions0 of another person. The constituted authority must be allowed to deal with such matters when they arise.

“No person has the right to take the law in his or her own hands in this country. Violence has and never will solve any problem,” said the President.

“Buhari also directed the Ministries of Information and Culture, Police Affairs and that of Communications and Digital Economy to work with GSM providers and Tech companies to help contain the spread of false and inflammatory information through social media.

“The President extended the nation’s condolences to the family of the deceased student and wished all those injured a quick recovery. He commended the immediate response to the incident by the Sokoto State Government and urged religious and community leaders to call citizens’ attention to the need to exercise the right to freedom of speech responsibly.

“President Buhari called for tempered comments by the media and calm among the general population while investigation is ongoing to find out the remote and immediate causes of the incident.”

Aside from former Senate President, Anyim Pius Anyim, no other Presidential aspirant has condemned the murder. The Sokoto State Police Command said the Command has arrested two students in connection with the murder.

2023: Uzodinma Leads Mai Buni, Others To Submit Senate President’s Forms For Presidency

Hope Uzodimma Lead Submission of Lawan Presidential Form in Abuja

By Gideon Njoku

Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma, was the surprise leader, in Abuja, on Friday, May 13, of a group which submitted the completed All Progressives Congress, APC, Presidential Expression of Interest and Nomination forms on behalf of the Senate President, Dr Ahmed Lawan.

With Uzodinma and others was the Governor of Yobe State, Mai Mala Buni. The Senate President is from Yobe State.

It is not known if Uzodinma is supporting the Presidential aspiration of Lawan, but going to submit his forms, almost, confirms that he is pitched his tent with Lawan, and for whom  APC Imo delegates would cast their votes. Until now, not a few people thought he was going to go the way of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

Lawan’s entry into the race surprised not a few people who thought that the All Progressives Congress, APC, had zoned its Presidential seat to the South.

His entry sparked speculations that he could be the North’s trump card to replace President Muhammadu Buhari.

The Imo State Governor would be the first Governor from the South to submit the forms of any Presidential Aspirant, especially, outside the South.

Southern Governors Forum, of which Uzodinma is a member, had,  at different meetings, taken a stand, and insisted that the office of the President rotates to the South.

His South-east Zone, has been clamouring for the seat in 2023.

He is not the only South-East Governor, however, not rooting for a Governor from the Zone. Both the Governors of Abia and Enugu States are allegedly rooting for the Presidential aspiration of Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike.

Former Governor of Abia State and Senate Chief Whip, Orji Uzor Kalu, is also rooting for Lawan, and has asked the South-east PDP to vote Lawan if the PDP does not give its ticket to the South-east. His reasoning: The North-east, where Lawan is from has, like the South-east, not produced a President.

Britain Condemns the Murder of Deborah in Sokoto

Catriona Laing

By Adesina Soyooye

Catriona Laing, the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, has condemned the barbaric murder of Deborah Samuel, a second year student of the Shehu Shagari College of Education in, Sokoto.

Deborah was murdered on Thursday, May 12, by her colleagues for allegedly, in a voice note asked them to stop posting Religious issues on their Class Whatsaap platform meant for their academic issues.

What she said did not go down well with her colleagues of the Islamic faith, who mobbed her, stoned her and hit her with just about everything, and set her ablaze. They regarded her advice as blasphemous to Holy Prophet Mohammed.

Reacting to the unbelievable  incident, the High Commissioner called on Security Agents to arrest the perpetrators and see that justice is done.

Catriona tweeted on Friday: “I condemn the murder of Deborah Samuel in Sokoto, and urge the Police and relevant authorities to ensure the perpetrators of this horrific act are made to face justice in line with the law.”

Deborah’s murder has been greeted with an avalanche of condemnation from a number of people including Bishop Matthew Kukah of the Sokoto Catholic Diocese, Presidential Aspirant under the PDP, former Senate President, Pius Anyim, as well as the Sultanate Council, Sokoto.

Presidential aspirant, Atiku Abubakar, after an initial tweet condemning it, distanced himself from the tweet, took it down, and said it was not authorized by him.

There has been no reaction from the Federal Government, but the Governor of Sokoto State, another Presidential aspirant, Aminu Tambuwal, immediately ordered the indefinite closure of the College.

The Police say two people have been arrested in connection with the murder.

Nwajiuba Absent At Valedictory For Departing Ministers; Buhari To Replace Amaechi, Sylva Sooner Than Thought

0
Buhari Holds Valedictory Meeting with Ministers

President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday in Abuja bade farewell to outgoing members of the Federal Executive Council (FEC), affirming that a significant number of them have been sufficiently equipped to aspire to higher elective offices, including the Office of the President.

Speaking at a valedictory session for appointees leaving the cabinet to pursue political ambitions, the President said:

”I have no doubt that if the next President emerges from among former members of this cabinet, like any other aspirant, ample competence and outstanding service delivery would be on display. This will be part of our legacies to Nigerians.”

The President, who commended the departing public officers for serving the nation sacrificially, ”with dignity and honour”, had at the last FEC meeting on Wednesday, May 11, 2022 directed that all Ministers and other political appointees who aspire to contest for elective offices in the 2023 General Elections should resign their current appointments.

”I note that some have complied while others are in the process of doing so.

”I would like to use this opportunity to commend your decision and courage to contest for elective offices and your compliance with my directive.

”I also wish to thank you for your invaluable services to this nation through your contributions as Cabinet members.

”I wish you success in the upcoming elections and in your future endeavours,” he said.

President Buhari told the ministers that looking back as the head of the team over the years, he had fond memories of incisive and robust discussions during cabinet meetings, rendering of performance reports during special sessions and presidential retreats.

”In 2015, citizens of this country overwhelmingly voted for me to become the President of this nation on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

”Selecting members of the Cabinet went through a careful process so that the best and most competent could emerge. The performance of that class of 2015 proved me right.

”In 2019, Nigerians similarly re-elected me as President. Again the selection went through another meticulous process.

”That re-election was significant because it served as a referendum on our performance during the first term and it inspired me to bring back some of the members of the first cabinet either to their old Ministries or re-assigned to other sectors.

”New Members were also brought on board to inject fresh energies, skills and ideas to enhance the execution of government’s programs and policies.

”With these and much more, I am happy to note that a significant number of cabinet members have become sufficiently equipped to aspire to higher elective offices, including the Office of the President. This shows the impact of the experience gathered while serving as members of the Federal Executive Council,” he said.

The President acknowledged that prior to some of them joining his cabinet; they had made their marks in other areas as governors, legislators, entrepreneurs and core professionals.

He added that the experience and expertise they brought on board have significantly resulted in enormous development in various sectors and the accomplishment of government programmes.

”These include infrastructure, agriculture, health systems, financial management, administration of justice, building social safety net systems,” he said.

Noting that the departure of some cabinet members has undoubtedly created a vacuum that should be filled, the President said appointments would be made without delay so that the business of governance will not suffer.

President Buhari urged the remaining members of the cabinet to show more diligence, resilience and commitment to serve Nigerians better, saying ‘‘the journey to the finish line is still very far ’’.

”Like always, there will be challenges to address, programmes to deliver and policies to implement.

”You must therefore brace up for more work and target increased accomplishments.

”The determination to leave important legacies for Nigerians should never be compromised,” the President told members of his cabinet.

The following outgoing members of FEC were present at the valedictory session: ministers of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi; Niger Delta Affairs, Godswill Akpabio; Science, Technology and Innovation, Ogbonnaya Onu, State for Petroleum, Timipre Sylva; Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige.

Others are the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), Minister of State, Mines and Steel Development, Uche Ogah, the Minister of Women Affairs, Pauline Tallen and the Minister of State for Niger Delta Affairs, Chief Tayo Alasoadura.

The Minister of State (Education), Emeka Nwajiuba, who had earlier tendered his resignation, was not present at the valedictory session.

Speaking on behalf of the outgoing ministers, Akpabio thanked the President for giving them the opportunity to serve and contribute their quota to nation building.

He described working with the President as a ‘‘fantastic and knowledgeable experience,’’ adding that as they step aside they will continue to be great disciples of Buhari.

”As we step aside from FEC, I want you to know that you have disciples in us. I want you to know that it is time for us to propagate Buharism.

”I want you to know that we are going to be working closely with the Minister of Information and Culture to take your message of transformation, love, patience, administrative sagacity to Nigerians, ” he said.

The Niger Delta Minister told the President that from his interactions with colleagues leaving the cabinet was like the story of the Spanish play of ‘‘sadness and joy.’’

”Sadness in the sense that we are going to miss the continuous daily and weekly interaction with a Father and learning from him; joy because we now have an opportunity to go to the wider audience in Nigeria to speak more of your achievements for this country. ”

Lauding the President’s deep patriotism, Akpabio said he is the ”best president Nigeria could ever have had at a time of difficult circumstances.”

He prayed God Almighty to grant the President a successful tenure and protect his family, adding:

”May one of us succeed you in order to continue the good legacies you have laid on ground. We have seen and know your vision. We know where you want the country to be.”

2023: As Expected, Ngige Drops Out Of Presidential Race

0

By Adesina Soyooye

“For Dr Ngige, a bird in hand is better than a million birds in the bush, especially, as in his own case, there were no birds at all in the bush”

Minister of Labour and Productivity, Dr Chris Ngige, has done the obvious and the expected. He has dropped out of the Presidential race.

Only a few people, perhaps, believed Ngige when he declared interest to replace President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023.

Most people felt he was joking. They did not take him seriously. They felt he has no reach. And even though he has been a Minister since 2015, they still felt he had no name recognition.

Some people expressed doubt that he even took himself seriously for the race. Since his declaration of interest, nothing much was heard of his campaign.

Nobody heard that he had gone to anywhere to woo delegates, even in his own Anambra State. He was just there.

Nobody could confirm whether he purchased the nomination form or not. Perhaps, they said, he bought the Expression of interest form, only, for N30m. Still big money.

Ngige, they said, thought he could stay on in office and still say he was a Presidential aspirant. But the President pulled the rug from under his feet.

On Wednesday, he asked all his appointees, interested in elective positions in 2023 to resign from office on, or before, May 16, 2022. Most of them did. They resigned. But not Ngige.

Asked about it, he said he needed to consult with the President and his Constituency before resigning. That’s when many suspected he would go nowhere. A bird in hand is better than a million in the bush, especially, as in Ngige’s case, there was no single bird in the bush.

On Friday, May 13, Ngige finally did the long expected.

He withdrew from the Presidential race.

The obvious reason: He decided to withdraw, he said,  after consulting with the President, his family and his Constituency. “He obviously knows where his bread is buttered”, one cheeky fellow quipped. Another said the President did not help matters when he said he would replace the departing Ministers quickly.

Luckily for Dr Ngige, Mr President has not yet declared his Ministerial office vacant.

One request from Nigerians though: Minister of Labour,  resolve the ASUU issue fast so University students can go back to their schools. Fair enough.

Prof Ibrahim Maqari, Abuja Imam, Commends Deborah’s Murder

0
Prof Maqari

By Gideon Njoku

An Imam in Abuja, Professor Ibrahim Maqari, has commended the blood-cuddling murder of Deborah Yakubu over alleged blasphemy.

Deborah, a student of the Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto, was murdered in a most gruesome manner by a number of her colleagues, of the Islamic faith, who first stoned and clubbed her to death, and followed up by setting her body on fire.

Commenting on the murder, Professor Maqari warned of a borderline, which if crossed, will not be tolerated by Muslims.

He said in a post: “It should be known to everyone that we the Muslims have some red lines beyond which MUST NOT be crossed.”

The Professor is the Chief Imam of the Abuja National Mosque.

According to him, “The dignity of the Prophet (PBUH) is at the forefront of the red lines. If our grievances are not properly addressed, then you should not be criticized for addressing them ourselves.”

Prof Maqari is on the same page  with a couple of Muslims.

For instance, the Peoples Gazette quoted Anas Mohammad Sani, a Government official in Sokoto, the State where the gruesome murder took place, as saying in support,  “Muslims don’t take insults against beloved prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم in whatever form.”

He blamed the murder of Deborah on her reckless comments and warned:

“The earlier our Christian brothers and sisters understand this, the better for all of us. May the recklessness of our tongues never drive us to (an) early grave.”

Clarification on Buhari’s Aide’s Comment On Killing Over Blasphemy

0
Bashir Ahmad

The comment attributed to the Special Assistant on New Media to President Muhammadu Buhari, Bashir Ahmad, over the gruesome murder of Deborah Yakubu, a  student of the Shehu Shagari College of Education, which is trending, is not a recent comment by him.

Ahmad’s comment supporting the killing of anybody over BLASPHEMY has nothing to do with the incident at hand.

Ahmad  made that statement in 2015 over another lynching of a Christian in Kano, alleged to have committed blasphemy.

The comment has nothing to do with the current murder of Deborah, and is just being re-cycled as if it is current.

The clarification comes on the heels of a story carried on this medium over Ahmad’s 2015 comment.
