Deborah’s Spirit At Work: Family Relocated, Siblings Offered Scholarship; Killers Arraigned, Prof Mansur, 33 Others, Lead Defence

Pastor and Deborah Samuel Father and Mother

By Charles Igbo

Even in her grave after a horrific death,  Deborah Samuel Yakubu’s spirit is still at work. By her painful death, relief has come to her family.

As the first child of her parents’ eight children, and the only one in a higher institution, she was supposed to help her parents take care of her siblings.

But on May 12, 2022, 2022, the hope died. Deborah was killed in a most horrifying manner by her school mates who accused her of blasphemy over her comment on a Class WhatsApp Platform. She had asked that the posting of Religious matters be stopped since the Platform was created for academic information only. Some of her Muslim school mates, who obviously are Islamic Fundamentalists, took offence, and accused her of blasphemy.

She was stoned and clubbed  to death, and her body set ablaze. Deborah was a Christian, and a level 200 student of the Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto.

Her absolutely traumatised mother, in response, aside from leaving everything to God, has stopped her other children from going to school. She said, in tears, that she would never allow any of her children go to school again. Apparently,  for fear that Deborah’s fate may also befall them.

But respite has come to the family, whose breadwinner, Deborah’s father, is a security guard. Respite came to them, not from the Government, but from a Church.

The General Overseer of a Pentecostal Church in Porthacourt, Rivers State,  Apostle Chibuzor chinyere,  of OPM Church, has offered the family a lifeline.

In a statement, he offered to relocate the family to Porthacourt, give them free accommodation for life, give the father of the family a decent job, open a shop for the mother of the family, and most important, he also offered scholarships to all Deborah’s siblings so they can comfortably go to school.

The Apostle’s words:

“I just watched a video clip where the parents of Deborah Samuel said they will not be sending their children to school again.

“GOD FORBID!

“Anyone with their contacts should inform them, immediately,  that I,  Apostle Chibuzor Chinyere, the General Oversear  of OPM Church,  is relocating them to Porthacourt.

“They would be staying in one of the OPM free estates where they will never pay rent forever.

“All their children are given automatic scholarship in OPM Free schools.

“I will get the father a job, and I will, also,  open a shop for the mother.

“Please, get in touch with them, immediately.

God bless you.

Please, continue to share until it gets to them”

Deborah has been buried in her Niger State Community. Incidentally, her State Government has said no word since her gruesome murder.

In another development, a Professor of Law at the Usman Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, Professor Mansur Ibrahim, led 33 other Lawyers in defence of two of Deborah’s murderers who were arraigned on Monday, May 16, at a Sokoto Magistrate Court.

On Saturday, May 14,  hundreds of Muslim Fundamentalists had trooped to Sokoto Streets to demand the release of the two arrested persons. In the process, they   went on a destruction and looting spree, targeting Churches and businesses owned by Christians, especially, Southerners.

Sylva Does The Expected, Drops Presidential Ambition, Returns To Work; Pauline Tallen Too

0
Timipre Sylva

By Gideon Njoku

Nobody in the Ministry of Petroleum Resources was surprised when on the final day President Muhammadu Buhari, asked all his appointees aspiring to elective offices against 2023 to quit, they saw their Minister back to work at his desk.

Timipre Sylva, the Minister of State, Petroleum, had surprisingly picked the Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms to run for the Presidential seat, and replace Buhari in 2023.

Not many people took him seriously for obvious reasons. The former Governor of Bayelsa State, aside being a good Party man, and President Buhari’s Deputy in the Petroleum Industry, did not quite fit the bill. They felt he neither had the clout nor the reach.

On May 9, 2022, Sylva revealed, standing before a crowd in the premises of the Ministry, that the Northern Solidarity Group purchased the forms for him to take part in  his party’s 2023 presidential primaries.

Not a few people knew the game was up for Sylva and a couple of other Ministers when Buhari gave them a deadline – May 16 – to quit office. One by one, they began to drop their ambition. Minister of Labour and Productivity, Dr Chris Ngige. Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN who wanted to be Governor in his State, Kebbi.

Today, May 16, 2022,  Sylva went back to his job. And so did the Minister for Women Affairs, Pauline Tallen, who was aspiring to be a Senator  from Plateau State where she had been a Deputy Governor.

A Petroleum   Ministry official who, some people insist, spoke with Sylva’s permission, but who pleaded anonymity, said:

“He (Sylva) promised to consult the leader of the country and his political leaders the day he was presented with the form.

“He believes that concentrating on his work will attract more investments for the oil and gas sector.

“He has consulted and he believes that the challenges at the ministry and oil and gas sector are enough issues for him to begin to deal with now than going to pursue presidential ambition at the expense of the nation.

“The oil and gas sector is the mainstay of the economy and it is not like any other ministry somebody can just come in and take over.

“It requires some measures of time for the person to understand what is happening in the system.

“For the interest of the industry and the nation, he has decided to wave that personal ambition to see what he can contribute in the remaining part of President Buhari’s administration.

“The implementation of the Petroleum Industry Act 2021 is very critical and he wants to continue to make his own contribution to the day-to-day running of the country and support Mr. President for robust achievements.”

However, many people hardly believe this argument. They simply say that for Sylva, “a bird in hand is better than a million in the bush.”

Handsome Nollywood Actor, Leo Mezie Dies; Nigerians Call For Prayer Session For Industry

Leonard Onyemachi Chimezie

By Akinwale Kasali

In less than a week, the Nigeria Movie Industry, Nollywood, has lost two of its finest acts.

First, it was veteran Actor, Gbenga Richards who died five days ago. On Saturday, May 16, 2022, the industry has lost one of its most handsome actors,  Leonard Onyemachi Chimezie, popularly known as Leo Mezie, to death.

The 46-Year old actor had been battling with Kidney disease for years, and had a Kidney Transplant four years ago and another one last week. But he suddenly began suffering some complications that led to his death on Saturday, May 14th, 2022.

The Late actor had been in and out of hospital before finally giving up the ghost.

Breaking the news of his demise on Social Media on Monday, May 16, as his death was concealed,  was fellow Nollywood Actress, Chioma Toplis.

Toplis wrote on her Instagram Page:  “Actor Leo Mezie is dead. He died on Saturday in Abuja while recovering from a kidney transplant. His corpse has been moved to Umuahia his hometown. RIP Leo.”

The death of Mezie has brought to four, the number of Nollywood acts that have died in the month of May.

First it was Chinedu Bernard; followed by David Osagie and Gbenga Richards.

This has prompted reactions from Nigerians who say  there is need for a prayer session to avert the bad occurrences and death that have taken the industry by storm.

Oluwakemi Akao, a fan of the industry tearfully lamented that it was one death too many, urging members of the industry to come together and pray against the death rocking it.

Also, Chinonso Akwuegbu called on Nigerians to pray for the industry as it was a trying time for the make- believe industry.

A Month To Ekiti Governorship Poll, Serious Crisis Rocks ADP

0
ADP Crisis

By Ayodele Oni

With the way things are going within one of the contending political parties in the June 18 Governorship election in Ekiti state, the party may go into extinction before the election.

Action Democratic Party, (ADP) in the past few days,  has experienced internal crisis which has led to its abandonment by the erstwhile Deputy Governorship candidate, Mr Idowu Afuye.

Only on Sunday, news of the suspension of the Ekiti State Chairman of the party, Kunle Abegunde, by the National Leadership dominated the social media.

The decision to suspend the Chairman was contained in a letter, dated 14th of May 2022 and signed by National Secretary of the party, Victor Fingesi.

It reads: “I am directed to inform you that you have been suspended as Chairman of the Action Democratic Party in Ekiti State with effect from 14th May, 2022

“This became necessary following preliminary investigations by a panel upon which the following findings were made :

“Insurbordination to the leadership of the party, by refusing to honour its invitation to the National Headquarters in Abuja to discuss the lingering issues confronting the party in Ekiti State, contrary to Articles 48:1 1, 48:2, 52:2/al, of the ADP Constitution.

“Attempt to conduct State Congress of the party outside the timetable approved by the

National Working Committee (NWC) without the authorisation to do so, contrary to the ADP Guidelines for Congresses and Articles 52:2 (a). tcl, (d) of the party Constitution.

“Your fallure to intimate the leadership of our great party of the purported defection of theb Ekti State ADP Deputy Governorship candidate, Comrade ldowu Afuye to the APC.

“Premised on the foregoing, you are hereby notified that you (ADEKUNLE ABEGUNDE) no longer have authority and mandate to represent or communicate on behalf of the ADP.

“In light of the above, you are hereby invited to face the disciplinary committee at the

National Headquarters in Abuja, on Wednesday, 18h May, 2022.”

It was gathered that worried by the developments within the party, some of its members, including the suspended Chairman, are already contemplating  defection to another party.

They blamed the development on the high handedness of the Governorship candidate of the party, Mrs Kemi Elebute – Halle, who they accuse of running the party as a personal business.

Investigations revealed that before her appearance on the political landscape of Ekiti state, ADP was not in the reckoning as it did not have any office in the state.

On her arrival and decision to contest for the Governorship, Elebute was reported to have personally put in place the structure of the party and made available funds to secure office apartment.

With this solo effort, the candidate is reported to be going around and telling members in the State that she owes none of them any allegiance.

Elebute, from the North Senatorial district, is the only female in the Governorship race in the state.

Among allegations levelled against her when he dumped the party, the former Deputy Governorship candidate alleged that Elebute was running the party as one man show.

Even with, or without, the present crisis rocking ADP in the state, the party is not among the serious ones which are working round the clock to win the Governorship.

2023: Twelve Governors Sign Tinubu’s Presidential Nomination Form

0

By Adesina Soyooye

If the number of Governors who signed the Presidential Nomination form of All Progressives Congress, APC, chieftain, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, is anything to by, then, he could be on his way to clinching the Presidential ticket of the Party.

Tinubu, whose form was submitted on his behalf by a  group led by the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu and former Secretary to the Federal Government, Babachir Lawal, on Wednesday, is a frontline Presidential aspirant under the banner of the APC.

It has been revealed that out of the 22 Governors of the APC, 12 of them signed Tinubu’s forms. That’s more than half. And, considering that Governors control the delegates from their States, it is taken for granted that delegates from those States  are likely to cast their votes for Tinubu.

According to a tweet by the Chief Press Secretary to the Lagos State Governor, Gboyega Akosile, the Governors, among other delegates, who signed Tinubu’s forms are:

Governor Gboyega Oyetola – Osun State

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu – Lagos State

Governor Bello Matawalle – Zamfara State

Governor Babagana Zulum – Borno State

Governor Abdullahi Ganduje – Kano State

Governor Aminu Masari – Katsina State

Governor Rotimi Akeredolu – Ondo State

Governor Atiku Bagudu – Kebbi State

Governor Abdullahi Sule – Nasarawa State

Governor Inuwa Yahaya – Gombe State

Governor Abubakar Sani-Bello – Niger State

Governor Muhammad Baduru – Jigawa State

Incidentally, one of the Governors who signed the form for Tinubu, Baduru of Jigawa State, is also a Presidential aspirant.

However, a few days ago, an unconfirmed story had made the rounds that 14 Governors Signed the Nomination form for Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

First Bank Holdings: High Expectations As ‘Company’ Releases Audited Result In 2 Weeks

0

By James Orji

First Bank of Nigeria, FBN Holdings has disclosed that it’s awaiting the Central Bank of Nigerian, CBN approval before the releases of its audited results for the year ended December 2021.
The Nnamdi Okonkwo-led corporation and parent company of Nigeria ‘s oldest fiancial institution, First Bank of Nigria Limited said the results will now be released before the end of the month after approval by the financial regulator.
The company disclosed this in a press release obtained by The magazine.
The statement said “FBN Holdings Plc (“FBNH” or “the Company”) wishes to notify the Nigerian Exchange Limited (‘NGX’ or ‘the Exchange’) and the investing public that the Company was unable to file and publish its Unaudited Financial Statements (Q’1 2022 UFS) for the first quarter ended March 31, 2022, by April 30, 2022, as required under the Rules of the NGX.”
“The Company’s inability to publish was due to the delays in finalizing the Audited Financial Statements (FY 2021 AFS) of the Group for the year ended December 31, 2021. The FY 2021 AFS was concluded and submitted to the Company’s primary regulator on April 29, 2022.”
“FBNH plans to publish both the FY 2021 AFS and the 01 2022 UFS on or before May 30, 2022, by which time the necessary approval would have been obtained from our primary regulator.”
The disclosure, industry watchers say, will assuage the feelings associated with the bank’s delay in releasing the 2021 audited accounts after others banks have published their reports for the year 3nding December 2021. The financial behemoth has yet to release the first quarter 2022 results.
Also, keen watchers in the financial sector informed The Source magazine that the delay may not be unconnected with the management transition in FBNH following the appointment of Okonkwo in November last year as the Group Managing Director, GMD. He effectively assumed office on January 1, 2022.
“The new management needs time to settle down to work. First Bank is the flagship of banking in the country, whatever happens there must surely have reparcussions in the industry. That’s why everything in the bank is geared towards the interests of all stakeholders in mind. We are finally happy that the ‘company has set the deadline for the release of the results for end of May,” Adegboyega Rufus, a financial expert told the magazine on Monday.

Sokoto Killing: Deborah’s Parents Stop Children From Going To School

0
Sokoto Religious Crisis

By James Orji

Dazed by the murder of their daughter by Islamic fundamentalists in Sokoto last week, the parents of Deborah Garba have vowed never to send their remaining children to shool. Deborah, a Christian 200-level student of Shehu Shagari College of Education Sokoto was gruesomely killed by some students of the institution who after flogging her terribly set her ablaze and left her to die in pain.

The pain of her untimely death has totally devastated the parents who said their remaining seven children will never be allowed to go to school. The deceased was the first of the eight children.
Their decision came on the heels of warning by the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN to parents to stop sending their children to study in the northern part of the country.

The Sokoto state govrnment has shut down the school while Govrnor Aminu Tambuwal has ordered a curfew in the state in order to restore calm in the troubled state.

The state police command said it has also arrested some suspects in connection with the murder of Deborah, who was accused by her killers of blaspheming Islamic  Prophet Muhammad.

But, this seemed not to have been enough to assuage the grieving mother of the deseased, Alheri Emmanuel who told the Punch, “ that my children will never go to school again”.

Her husband Emmanuel Garba, also lamented the pain the family has been through since their first  daughter was killed. For instance, Garba who works as a menial worker with the state government said the family was left to bear the cost of the burial without any support from the government. He paid N100, 000 to transport the deseased corps to Niger state from Sokoto where she was killed, Garba said.

The parents, however, promise not to seek legal redress for their daughter, saying they have left her killers to God to judge.

According to Garba, “I have yet to get a call or message from anyone concerning the incident. Nobody called me; I decided to go on my own. I went to the state CID (Criminal Investigation Department) office and begged them to help me get the corpse so I could bury it because leaving it there might make it decompose. Then they took me to the mortuary, did some paperwork and released the remains to me.”

“I was the one who paid to transport the remains. I was charged N120,000 which I was forced to pay because that was the cheapest I got as the majority of people don’t like transporting corpses.
“We are not seeking redress in any court over the killing of our daughter. We are firm believers in Christ who always leave everything in the hands of God. No vengeance, nothing. Everything is left to our creator.

“We don’t want anything (from the government) but it is just unfortunate that we used all our resources to send her to school and now she is dead. She was my eldest child and I have seven others left.”

Meanwhile, the Northern chapter of CAN has urged parents to stop sending their wards to study in the Sokoto and other northern states known for religious volatility.

The umbrella body of Christians in the country said this is necessary until the federal and state government are ready to secure the lives of its children both in Sokoto and other states that had been hostile to Christians and Christianity.

Deborah: Dangote’s Son-in-Law, Captain Jamil, Supports Killing; Azman Air Says He’s No Longer Its Staff

0
Captain Jamil and Deborah

By Adesina Soyooye

A Nigerian Carrier, Azman Air, has denied Captain Jamil, an Airline Pilot, and son of a former Inspector General of Police, MD Mohammed, as its Pilot.

Jamil, an accomplished Commercial Airline Pilot is married to the last child of Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote.

He sparked controversy in the wake of the gruesome murder of Deborah Samuel Yakubu, a 22-year old student of the Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto.

Deborah was stoned to death and her body set ablaze, on May 12, 2022, by her school mates for, allegedly, committing blasphemy when she, allegedly, spoke in an unflattering manner about Holy Prophet Mohammed in a Class Whatsaap Platform.

Her murder sparked outrage and strong condemnation nationwide except from among Muslim fundamentalists many of whom took to Sokoto Streets in a violent protest, demanding the release of two persons already arrested by the Police in connection with the sickening murder.

But reacting to the murder in a tweet, Captain Jamil Abubakar was in support when he tweeted that in Islam, the punishment for blasphemy is death.

Jamil: “In Islam, we respect the Injil, Tara, Zabur. We were never taught to disrespect any of the books, or any of the Prophets from Adam to Muhammad SAW & the Quran.

“The punishment for blasphemy is DEATH!, in most religions, including Christianity. Respect people’s religion. It’s simple.

“In Islam, the Shariah Court handles these cases. Islam put rules and regulations to control people’s action and motives, so the wrong ones are not cheated and justice is served the right way.”

Jamil’s tweet attracted immediate outrage from many who said they would never fly Azman Airline again, dubbing Jamil a fundamentalist who could crash an aircraft because of Religion.

But in a swift reaction, Azman said Jamil had left their employ since 2019, and that it would not take responsibility for the actions or comments of an ex-staff.

In a tweet the Airline said: “PUBLIC NOTICE: Captain Jamil Abubakar is no longer a Pilot @AzmanAir. His last flight with us was 22nd December 2019.

“We refuse to take responsibility for a comment or view of a former Staff.

“The general public should kindly take note.”

Not a few people say that given the status of his father, his father-in-law, and his profession as an Airline Pilot, Captain Jamil was reckless in his comments.

He has  taken down the tweet.
