Peter Obi Quits PDP; May Fly SDP’s Flag; Youths Abandon PDP

0
Peter Obi

By Adesina Soyooye

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has lost unarguably, one of its most popular and viable Presidential aspirants, Peter Obi.

Obi resigned from the PDP on Friday, May 20 in a letter to his Ward Chairman.

On Wednesday, May 24, he sent another resignation letter to the National Chairman of the Party, Dr Iyorchia Ayu.

Even though Obi did not quite State his discomfort with the PDP, opinion is that it is connected to the reluctance of the party to zone its Presidential ticket to the South and, the South-east in particular.

By his resignation, he has made a strong statement that would hunt the conscience of the PDP Leadership.

The PDP recently threw its ticket open to every Zone.

Obi’s resignation letter reads:

“Dear National Chairman,

RESIGNATION FROM PEOPLES DEMOCRATIC PARTY (PDP) AND WITHDRAWAL FROM THE PRESIDENTIAL CONTEST

” I am writing to intimate you of my resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP,) which was conveyed to the Chairman of Agulu Ward 2, Anaocha LGA, Anambra, effective Friday 20 May 2022. Consequently, I am by this letter informing you of my withdrawal for the PDP Presidential Primaries.

“It has been a great honor to contribute to nation-building efforts through our party. Unfortunately, recent developments within our party make it practically impossible to continue participating and making such constructive contributions.

“Our national challenges are deep-seated, and require that we each make profound sacrifices  towards rescuing our country. My commitment to rescuing  Nigeria remains firm, even if the route differs.

“I wish to thank you personally for your graciousness and leadership. I wish you well and best of luck in the service of country.”

Obi was the PDP Vice Presidential candidate in 2019. He ran on the same ticket with Atiku Abubakar. They lost to the incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

Strong speculations are that Obi is headed to the Social Democratic Party, SDP, where, it is said, he would fly  the Presidential flag.

Obi’s resignation from the PDP is likely to kick-start a run on  the sympathy for the party, especially, from millions of youths who see him as a breadth of fresh air and promised him maximum support against 2023.

This is the second time Obi would quit a party. He resigned from the All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA, and joined the PDP during the Goodluck Jonathan Presidency.

EFCC: Rochas Says He Is A Victim of Persecution By EFCC; Imo People Disagree, Tell Their Story With Him

EFCC in Rochas Okorocha House

By Charles Igbo

Nigerians woke up on Tuesday, May 24, to the embarrassing situation which played out at the Maitama, Abuja home of former Imo State Governor, Senator Rochas Okorocha.

Personnel of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, had invaded his home to effect his arrest. They accused him of jumping bail. They said he abused the administrative bail given him when he was arrested months ago. That he ignored every invitation extended to him to come to their office.

So, on Tuesday, they invaded  his residence, and literally, held him hostage. They blocked every exit front and back. When he refused to come out from the house, they forced their way in – breaking doors and ceilings.

After an over six-hour standoff, they eventually arrested him.

According to unconfirmed sources, he is likely to be in the custody of the EFCC for a number of days.

The Senator has attributed his “ordeal” to persecution. He said it was a ploy to stop him from contesting for the office of the President of Nigeria. He said he was billed to be screened by an APC Presidential panel but that the situation at hand had stopped him.

In a Press Release signed by his Spokesperson, Sam Onwuemeodo, Okorocha maintained the same story. He said he was being persecuted. He pleaded his innocence. He said no invitation was extended to him from the EFCC. And he said all he wanted on Tuesday was a warrant of arrest or a Court order authorising his arrest.

But reactions to the manner of his arrest from a number of Imo citizens have not been sympathetic. They say it was the law of Karma at work. While some say he deserved it, others condemned the EFCC method, but nonetheless, said his arrest was justified if he jumped bail.

Following are the Press Release by Onwuemeodo, and three reactions to the the Press Release and Okorocha’s arrest.

SUBJECT: THE INVASION  AND FORCEFUL ARREST OF SENATOR ROCHAS OKOROCHA BY THE  PERSONNEL OF EFCC

  1. We have been very unwilling to join issues with the Economic And Financial Crime Commission, EFCC, over its case with the former governor of lmo state and Senator Representing lmo West senatorial District, Senator Rochas Okorocha.

  1. Today, Tuesday, May 24 , 2022 , the personnel of the EFCC with armed security agents in their large number, stormed the private residence of Okorocha in Abuja  to arrest him.

  1. Okorocha is a presidential aspirant on the platform of APC. And the party’s screening for the Presidential aspirants was originally fixed for today, being Tuesday, May 24.   The question became, why today.?

  1. The conclusion on our part was that, those who had sworn to frustrate Okorocha’s presidential ambition or pursuit,  have not relented. And this  apprehension had occasioned  Okorocha’s demand for either warrant of arrest or court order,  from the security personnel who laid siege to his house .

  1. None was provided. The security personnel finally employed force to arrest Okorocha, without any warrant or court order. And if there was any , it could  also be made public.

  1. lt should also be recalled that on the day Okorocha declared to run for the office of President, was also the day the EFCC stormed the venue of the event to arrest him . And claimed that they had come to arrest Okorocha and arraign him even when he had not been served. The general outcry by the public, saved the situation.

  1. Again, EFCC invading Okorocha’s residence to arrest him , less than 48 hours he hosted the meeting of APC Presidential Aspirants from the South East, only raised the antenna of  our concern about the motive behind   all these.

  1. The APC presidential primary is taking place in few days time. There is also the concern that, the essence of all these , is to prevent him from participating in the party’s primary.

  1. Okorocha has been attending the sittings of the Senate. He has been going to his office to attend to people, including supporters, there was never any attempt to arrest him. He has never been in hidding. Why today, the APC Presidential Screening was to take place?

  1. All these have only fuelled our suspicion or concern that , there could be more than the eyes could see.

  1. EFCC has been in court with Okorocha over N2 billion fraud Allegation. Until Okorocha is found guilty, he remains innocent.

lf Okorocha is forcefully  stopped from pursuing his Presidential ambition , over a matter he is deemed innocent until proved otherwise, that won’t be  a nice story for  history and posterity.

  1. We have refused to believe some valid pieces of information at our disposal, on those  working to stop Okorocha  from exercising his constitutional right. The reason for our doubt  being that, Okorocha has not done anything to warrant such onslaught.

  1. Okorocha has sacrificed a lot for this nation and if he is denied the opportunity to pursue his Presidential ambition, either to win or lose , that would be most uncharitable and very unfortunate.

  1. Let the EFCC continue its work as it concerns Okorocha. But it should not prove those contending that, it is all about 2023 Presidential election, right.

  1. Okorocha has been cooperating with the Commission right from the outset. And would continue to cooperate with the Commission. The drama today would have been short or avoided if the Commission had come up with either warrant of arrest or court order. The whole argument would not have arisen.

  1. We only appeal that while doing its good works , EFCC should avoid ” strange hands,” in its operations. We are yet to detach politics from Okorocha’s ordeal.  We may be right or wrong. It’s our candid appeal that the Commission should not abort Okorocha’s presidential ambition.  Let the APC delegates or  Nigerians do that.

17 . We wish EFCC well. We wish all the security personnel who invaded Okorocha’s  house today  , laid siege there and carried out his arrest, well.

Sam. Onwuemeodo.

I Have No Sympathy For Rochas Okorocha

By Hon. Divine Chike

This your Press Statement Is inconsequential.

From the video of him asking God to rescue him,  Rochas and his family were just putting up  drama in their house to attract sympathy from Nigerians and the World at large.

But, personally, for me I don’t have any  sympathy for this looter of a man.

In 2016 this man, as Executive Governor of Imo State, visited South Africa and I was serving as SA to the Nigeria Consul General (CG) in Johannesburg as well as serving as the Pretoria Chairman of the Nigerian Union South Africa (NUSA) then.

Upon the Governor’s arrival in South Africa, my CG called me to organize to host him in our Consulate and we did give him a wonderful hosting with some top Nigerian professionals and business men. The the next day, we organized business breakfast meeting inviting some South African investors to meet with the Governor.

In his usual manner, he brainwashed all of us including the Investors of how he had built heaven and earth infrastructures in Imo State and wanted investors to come over and partner with him to boost what he had done so far.

I and my investors  picked interest on Health sector when he said he had built internationally standard 27 hospitals in the 27 LGAs, at a cost of about 30billion Naira;  Thar all he needed was an International Healthcare Partner to come and equip the building and run the hospitals on Public Private Partnership (PPP).

Unfortunately, we fell for this talkative of a Governor, thinking he was saying the truth.  Immediately my partners picked so much interest in the hospitals and we started planing to visit the Governor in Nigeria.

Fast track to late 2017. I pulled-in the investors from South Africa to Imo State. They were ready to invest about 50million US dollars to make some of the hospitals  top notch international standard hospitals with sophisticated equipments, only for us to arrive Imo and saw uncompleted, abandoned dilapidated crack walls – buildings littered here and there in each Local Government.

I was not only embarrassed with that visit to Nigeria, but I lost those hard earned investors. Very sad experience we had with this Okorocha of a man as Governor!

Imagine losing such foreign investors with 50million US- Dollar investment capital

When I later came back to Nigeria in 2018 and  evaluated those abandoned dilapidated buildings, I realized that those block work buildings, with some roof and some half roof, the construction of those 27 uncompleted buildings won’t cost upto one billion naira.  But  30 billion Naira Imo money  was signed off. And there are no completed hospitals.

And he’s facing the consequences of his actions, then you want me to sympathize with him on this drama he’s putting up here!

Mind you, the 30billion naira hospital project is just on health sector alone. The Owerri-Orlu road was awarded multiple times in billions to Okorocha’s siblings, today the same road is undergoing a serious reconstruction again running in billion.

I don’t want go further on projects Okorocha used to divert Imo funds yet only 2.5billion naira is the charges on him by EFCC and he’s acting all this drama.

The Law of Karma is catching up with him.

Posterity has come judging him. So no sympathy whatsoever!

Okorocha, Architect Of His Problem

By Emmanuel Ojimadu

Senator Rochas Okorocha embarked on such a white elephant project and abandoned it. He would’ve endeared himself to the people of Imo state, if he had completed and furnished those 27 Hospital projects.

No one would’ve castigated him for the shoddy road projects that are scattered across the state, particularly in Owerri, or the forceful land grabbing and properties he used State resources to acquire.

He should’ve thanked whoever reduced the embezzlement allegations to only two billion  Naira and just run to the courts and plead guilty and refund same, instead of gathering his family in his room and turn to prayer warriors.  God doesn’t answer such prayers.

He has to face the court and clear himself or be convicted. QED.

What Goes Around Comes Around

By GEE

“It is interesting to hear his supporters talk about “impunity” and the “lack of due process” displayed by the EFCC people in effecting the arrest. Did Rochas have any regards for Dur Process when he was in power?

One of the most heart- rending scenes I have ever witnessed was the demolition and eviction of Shell Camp, Owerri residents, by the Rochas Okorocha government.

I was driving  down Orlu road when a friend called me to ask if I had heard  that Shell Camp was being demolished in blatant disregard of  a subsisting court order.

I turned and drove into the place.  There, I saw that, indeed, the houses were being demolished even while  people were still living in them.

It was painful to see the residents, some of them very old people, scrambling to salvage and evacuate what they could before their home was flattened by one of the many earth-moving equipment standing by, that day.

In spite of the heavy police and military presence, there were some urchins who were stealing some of the things the residents brought out of their homes.

Even as night fell, the earthmovers were still at work. It wasn’t just the fate of the residents that  saddened me.

I was mourning the demolition of  a lovely well- planned and well- built estate.

The estate, as the name indicates, was built by the Shell Petroleum Development Company in the fifties. Then, Owerri was their base before they moved to Port Harcourt.

In addition it its solid and well  built bungalows sitting on large plots of land with plenty of trees and greenery, there was also a staff club complete with swimming pool and tennis courts as well as a hospital or clinic and a primary school.

The Camp  had proved useful time and time again in providing accommodation for public servants.

During the Civil war, my father shared one of the bungalows with a classmate and friend, who was also a senior civil servant.

When Imo state was created, again we lived there. We were to move there again in the mid- eighties for a brief period.

So in a way, I was a Shell camp boy.

At the time it was demolished,  it was largely being used by the Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education as its staff quarters. Many of the staff living there had retired from AIFCE,  but they were hanging on to their accomodation as  they had not been paid their retirement benefits.

Their argument was that they had nowhere to go and that if they were paid, they would vacate the place and use some of the money to rent accomodation somewhere.

When Rochas had tried to move against them initially, they had gone to court. The management of  AIFCE also went to court over the same issue.

The Government lost both cases with the courts ordering that it should leave the estate and its residents alone as the property did not belong to the state government.

It was said that Rochas attempted to go ahead with the evictions and demolitions despite the subsisting court orders, but the Police Commissioner at the time refused to play along.

When that Police Commissioner left,  Rochas was able to convince his successor to give him  support in terms of men and materials to embark on the demolitions.

That was when he demolished Shell camp as well as  the Owerri main market, where he also ignored yet another  restraining order from the court.

He also demolished the New market and several other structures in various locations.

Rochas did not care about  court orders or the fate or well being of all those who lost their homes and businesses as a result of the demolitions.

Many of the  people who were forcibly evicted from Shell camp died of heart break and hardship soon after.

Following the evictions and demolitions, the Estate was redesigned and the plots sold for the princely sum of 50million Naira each to interested buyers.

It is  alleged that the proceeds of the sale were not paid into any Government account. But that is a different story.

It is also interesting to see the man who ordered these heartless, wicked and illegal demolitions and evictions lying flat on his stomach, praying to God and begging to be saved  from  invading EFCC operatives.

It is the same way some of the victims of his evictions and demolitions must have prayed and begged.

It is even more interesting to hear his supporters talk about the ” impunity” and the ” lack of due process” displayed by the EFCC people in effecting the arrest.

Did Rochas have any regards for Due Process  when he was in power?

His acts of impunity were unparalleled.

Today, he is on the receiving end  of impunity and disregard for due process and some people are disturbing our peace.

What goes around comes around. Now na morning, his *wahala just dey begin.

Eventually Rochas will suffer like he made others suffer.

That is how it always happens in life.

That is why we all must be careful in all we do and treat others as we would like to be treated.

Ekiti: SDP Cries Foul As Fayemi Presents Vehicles To LG Chairmen, Pay Severance Allowance To Past Political Office Holders

0

By Ayodele Oni

After almost six months in office the Dr Kayode Fayemi’s administration in Ekiti state has deem it fit to provide official vehicles to local government chairmen.

The administration has also concluded arrangement to pay severance allowance to immediate past political office holders in the local government.

This was contained in a memo dated 23rd May, and signed by one B. A. Abereola on behalf of the permanent secretary, ministry of local government affairs.

Reactions have been trailing  what is described as ‘Greek Gift’ from the Governor whose posture to local government administration has not been positive.

The Social Democratic Party, (SDP) Governorship candidate, Chief Segun Oni, said fund meant for payment of gratuities to pensioners and salary arrears to civil servants is being diverted to settle politicians, apparently due to June 18 Governorship election.

Segun Oni Campaign Organization, (SOCO)in a statement pointed out that “it has been vindicated by earlier claims that the Kayode Fayemi-led All Progressives Congress (APC) government in Ekiti State is all out to ‘rob’ workers and pensioners in the state to oil the political machinery of the party’s governorship candidate.

“A memo of the state Ministry of Local Government Affairs, dated 23rd May, 2022, and which had gone viral, confirmed that “the APC government in Ekiti is utterly wicked and is the worst enemy of workers and the common man.”

“We have been warning the people of the evil plots of this government of no human face. These is purely not about politics, but about how men could be so callous towards fellow men.

“Despite the fact that the governor has diverted arrears of salaries and deductions of civil servants, teachers and local government workers to the APC candidate, Biodun Oyebanji’s campaign organisation’s purse, he again devised another means to punish them.

“What people do not know is that the governor has used the salary arrears he promised to pay the workers last month to execute the APC governorship campaign needs.

“That is the reason he hurriedly suspended the expected payment till after the election to give him room to share the money among his political associates.”

The Oni campaign spokesman explained that the only rationale that could be behind paying severance allowance of local government political appointees “while pensioners are dying daily” would only be selfish empowerment of political associates to the detriment of the ordinary people.

“The idea of giving severance allowances to immediate-past political appointees in the local governments, at this period when workers are hungry and pensioners are dying daily can’t be anything else but callous.

“Those appointees licked their principals’ booths for a paltry two years; and you are rewarding them when those who have spent the most useful part of their lives to serve the state are being owed months of salaries.

“Those who have served the state with black hair are now dropping dead in their old age as they can’t afford their medication because their pensions are not being paid.

“Ekiti people can now be further confirmed that what rightly belongs go them is what the APC-led government of Fayemi is using to finance his inordinate presidential ambition and his governorship continuity project.”

FG Spends N1bn Daily To Feed School Children

0

By Tosin Olatokunbo

The Buhari administration says it will spend close to N1 billion daily to feed school children across the country this year under its National Home Grown School Feeding Programme, HGSFP. No fewer than 10 million pupils of differed shades have been captured, the government said, adding that it now cost N100 to feed a pupil from N70.

This was made known by the Team Lead of NHGSFP, Aishatu Digil, at a stakeholders’ meeting on disbursement modalities for the review of the cost of feeding in the programme in Abuja, the nation’s capital, on Tuesday.

She disclosed that the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Farouq, got the approval to spend N100 daily on the feeding of each pupil in the programme.

According to Digit, “Before this, we were feeding school children with N70 per child, per meal. This was since 2016, but the President has approved N100 upward review.

“We have all stakeholders like the World Food Programme, National Bureau of Statistics, National Orientation Agency, Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition, Ministries of Agriculture, Education and others to deliberate on the modalities of disbursements.

“We are here basically to look at how best we can realise the benefits of the programme based on the new approved cost to improve the standard and quality of the meal and menu for the children.

“The breakdown of the N100 is as follows; N70 is for the cost of all food items except egg, N14 for the cost of egg to be implemented through the state structures in partnership with the Poultry Association of Nigeria.

“We are planning of having ‘Egg Wednesday’, where each child in the programme will be given one egg each every Wednesday.

“N10 stipends for cooks, N5 and N6 for micronutrient fortification, payable to cooks and one naira for quality assurance, payable to supervisors, which is optional,’ Digil said.

She explained further that the federal government has also taken steps to eliminate waste and inefficiency, with the aim of making the programme effective.

“After this meeting, we will collate inputs from stakeholders and present them to the minister so that we will implement the reviewed feeding cost in the next feeding circle, which starts this month,’’ Digil said.

Last month, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Hajiya Sadiya Farouq disclosed that the Federal Government had decided to train 150, 000 cooks nationwide as part of its school feeding project.

Meanwhile, those following the programme informed the magazine that the focus has been on the Northern part of the country, where poverty is well endemic among parents who cannot afford to feed or send their children to school without governmnet assistance, while the southern part of the country has been barely captured by themail managers.

OPINION: The Week That Remakes Or Breaks Nigeria

0
President Muhammadu Buhari
President Muhammadu Buhari

By Dan Abubakar

As our politicians are consumed by the quest for power in this long week of primaries, hardly anyone can contest the fact that  Nigeria today is a frightful mess, a nation in acute distress. Whichever way you look you find no cause for cheer.

The most basic function of a state – that of providing  security for the people – is imperilled and even absent in vast swathes of the country. No one feels safe. Kidnapping, terrorism and banditry point to an almost total collapse of even basic governance. The earth of Nigeria is drenched in blood and the atmosphere reeks of death and destruction. It is such that news of killings and death – no matter the numbers – barely elicit more than a shrug these days.

Pundits often spoke of seasons of anomie. That now seems like our permanent condition.

You get a sense that we are in the cusp of a major tragedy or are at the darkest part of night that could herald a new dawn.

A new dawn?

That is almost impossible to imagine in our present circumstances. The behaviour of politicians and public figures cloistered in Abuja and seemingly totally oblivious of the true state of the country today can only be explained in the context of descent of total insanity.

In other climes, candidates at least of major parties offer themselves for higher office on the basis of a track record of service or the credibility of their ideas. You don’t know whether to laugh or cry with Nigeria when you take even a cursory glance at the political terrain and the cast of characters who say they want to rule us.

To what can the Senate President, Ahmed Lawan, point to justify his entrance into the race at this late hour? Under his watch Nigeria has been inflicted with the most supine and idle bunch of legislators ever whose relevance is only to themselves even as they take home humongous  and totally unjustifiable pay.

His performance, his carriage are totally unprepossessing. Can anyone remember a speech or contribution to national discourse by him that elicited any interest, not to talk of stirring the imagination? But our dour senate president has allowed himself to be persuaded by some special interests, mostly a bunch of self-seeking ethnic jingoists and regional hegemonists and of course by the clowning opportunism of the Orji Kalus that he will be the consensus candidate the country needs.  Are these people living in this same country which, if care is not taken, is in the throes of death?

The same backward forces have included in their games Rotimi Amaechi who has borrowed Nigeria into peonage on account of highly inflated railway contracts. What morality governs his soul who while his pet Kaduna-Abuja express train delivered scores of passengers into death or captivity resolved to run for president nevertheless?

Though he is unlikely to go far even as he thinks his fadenchi ( Hausa for kow-towing) in the president’s household and Daura homestead should win him the prize, waiting for him is his home boy nemesis, the perpetually inebriated Rivers State governor Nyesom Wike. It is a sad but fitting commentary on the state of the country and its politics that Wike is today a frontrunner for   the PDP’s presidential nomination. His ascendancy is not just a matter of cash which he is splurging aplenty but because he is also a political brawler who excites some by his ability to shoot from the hip or to tell it like it is, crudely.

One such instance was when he took on Ekiti State governor Kayode Fayemi over his then speculated presidential ambition. Wike asked Fayemi why he should be running for president when he could not even tar a road of only a few kilometres to his state capital, Ado Ekiti. An embarrassed Fayemi tried to laugh it off but that did not stop him from declaring his ambition for the nation’s highest office.

Most of the other candidates you can easily dismiss as of little more than nuisance value or part of some petty, dark plot (like  ex-President Goodluck Jonathan who is apparently still engaged in highly curious footsies with power mongers connected to the presidency) that could undermine our national unity.

That unity barely exists today. The idea of a nation, of one country  united behind the pursuit of even broadly common purposes is practically buried by the sheer exhaustion that everyone suffers because of years, even decades, of disastrous and disgraceful failure of leadership.

You do not lose a country because there are problems no matter how serious.

You lose a country in the minds of the people. And we are at that threshold when critical sections of the country are making up their minds on whether there is any sense in keeping it together when those running it disastrously aground continue to insist on an inane right to dominate the rest of us. In a riposte to this commentator the other day, one actor in the political terrain interjected in a discussion about keeping Nigeria together: ” but is it worth it?”

Nigeria is still worth fighting for – but on fair and equitable terms for all its peoples. It demands a leadership that recognises the imperative for a new beginning and which would respond to a grave national emergency with the spirit of sacrifice, clear-headedness, vision and ruthless ambition to drive the rest of the country, even kicking and screaming, to a desired and desirable destination.

While the main political parties have registered a mostly forgettable field of presidential candidates, there are still a few roses in the wilderness. Mention can be made of Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom state who has been touting his singular achievement of setting up a national airline that is today the toast of the travelling public.

Critics often say that is his only notable achievement. But what can others point to? Peter Obi  with his knowledge and ascetic lifestyle shames the carpet baggers that dominate our political landscape and continues to remind us of the essence of public service.

In the crowded APC field , one man stands out: Vice President Yemi Osinbajo. He has the experience, knowledge and sobriety needed to confront our hydra-headed problems. The only question is whether he in addition has the required ruthlessness. He ought to win the unequivocal endorsement of his principal and all those who recognise that the nation is too fraught to prevent a power shift or to experiment with the bneophytes and adventurers in his party who are running but have nothing that  recommends them as worthy to be taken seriously.

ASUU Backs Down; Allows First Female FUTA VC To Assume Office

0
Prof (Mrs) Adenike Temidayo Oladuni

By Ayodele Oni

Academic Staff Union of Universities, (ASUU) of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, (FUTA), backed down in its threat to prevent the first female Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof Adenike Oladiji from assumption of duty on Tuesday.

ASUU, in a statement, which has generated crisis as the leadership of the union disowned it saying it was not signed by recognized leaders warned  Prof Oladiji not to resume as her appointment was fraught with irregularities.

Pro-Chancellor of FUTA, Ambassador Godknows Baladei Igali (OON), inaugurated the new Vice Chancellor urging her to prioritize the welfare of workers.

Prof Oladiji, is the 8th substantive Vice Chancellor of the university,

Igali pointed out that”One question of great concern is the importance of according top most priority to welfare of members of the University community. The saying goes ’an incentivised worker is a productive worker,’ vice versa.

“The welfare of all sections of the university community must be taken very seriously and be rest assured that I will do my level best to assist and support you in this respect.”

Apparently reacting to criticisms which trailed her selection, the pro chancellor insisted that the election process that produced the new VC was painstakingly done with honesty, fairness and transparency to produce the best candidate.

“Council shortlisted twenty 20 candidates out of the 29 that applied for the position of the Vice Chancellor in line with the stated criteria.

“The selection criteria were also strictly followed by the Selection Board to arrive at the three candidates based strictly on merit.

“It is indeed a well-deserved appointment. In a sector mainly dominated by the male folks, it is highly commendable that you could prove your mettle and emerge at the top.

“You, therefore, need to hit the ground running and work assiduously to not only sustain, but improve upon the current rating of the university.

“You need to provide exemplary leadership and bring harmony among the various sectors of the university.

“You will have to surpass the achievements of your predecessors in terms of academic and infrastructural development. You must be able to bring your managerial abilities to the fore to harness available resources to achieve breakthroughs for the university on all fronts.”

He pledged to cooperate with the new VC and management to further take the University to greater heights, lauding her predecessor, Prof Joseph Fuwape, for his uncommon leadership qualities.

Prof. Oladiji after her inauguration, promised to take the onerous task, assuring that the gains of FUTA in the past years would be sustained, improved upon and evolved on global strategies to secure the future.

“I, therefore, whole heartedly extend a hand of fellowship to all others who aspired for this position, and I solicit your support and cooperation to move our great university to greater heights.

“I must say at this juncture that many have extended hand of fellowship, I therefore salute your maturity and urge you to please let us join hands as we start a new phase in the history of FUTA. I am humbled by the many congratulatory messages.

“The Federal University of Technology Akure is doing well but there is always room for improvement.

“As a university of technology, we must be prepared to deal with emerging questions that we did not know had to be answered. The COVID-19 experience showed there is a lot of ground yet uncovered.

“Addressing most of the big issues facing humanity captured succinctly in the sustainable development goals requires that we network across country borders and academic disciplines. No single institution, country or discipline can exclusively provide solutions.

“We will network and be the hub for the much-desired change in the higher education sector.”

Ondo Govt Plans To Destroy My People’s Means Of Livelihood – Monarch Cries Out

Oba Aroloye - Owa of Idanre

By Ayodele Oni

As equipments are being moved in by Ondo State Government to commence destruction of cocoa plantations, at Idanre forest reserve, following allocation of the land to investors, the Idanre Monarch has cautioned Government against the move which he described as anti-people.

A portion of the forest reserve in Idanre has been reportedly demarcated and allocated by the State Government to some investors for industrial purpose.

Some farmers, who already have cocoa plantations on the land spanning several years, have kicked against the planned move, which they believe will destroy their means of livelihood.

Following mounting tension over Government recalcitrant, the Owa of Idanre, Oba Fredrick Aroloye has written to the state Government pleading that “I wish to appeal to your Excellency for a stay of further action on the planned destruction of cocoa farmland in preparation for the take-over of the area by investors.

“I will suggest to you, to call for a meeting between the government and ldanre community representatives and the farmers to work out an arrangement that will douse tension in the area.

“The community is willing to cooperate with you to ensure a crisis free forest area.

“Your Excellency, the truth is that the ongoing exercise of destroying Cocoa plantations in the reserved area, is an unpopular exercise with the people of my community.

“We do not need to embark on a voyage that will generate dastardly chains of reactions of sinister activities from displaced persons, who will in their quest to make ends meet, resort to illegal activities.

“Such reactions could further worsen the already fragile security condition across the land and become a serious distraction to the Government and the public.

“I hope that your Excellency will find time to reflect on my position and rescind the decision to completely remove Cocoa plantations from the Forest Reserve area. lt will save the state from unnecessary security and economic Pressures.

Thank you very much for your time spent in reading and reasoning with me.”

The monarch also protested against Government refusal to carry him along by seeking his views before a decision was taken on the forest reserve.

“I consider it expedient to convey my view based on my people’s reactions to the proposed exercise in respect of the subject matter of the letter from the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry’ dated May 2O22. In the said letter, I was invited to a meeting on l0th May 2022.

“Foremost, I feel slighted on the fact that tractors have started moving into the area to carry out the removal of Cocoa plantations before I got the belated invitation letter to the meeting on the above subject matter.

“You will agree with me that IDANRE people are predominantly farmers, having no other means of livelihood than Agriculture, farming precisely.

“On my part, I acknowledge and understand the need for re-afforestation in other to combat the menace of climate change and other environmental hazards, which are outcomes of man’s activities in the environment.

“Your Excellency, while there is no doubt that ldanre submitted the area to the then government for protection and forestry purpose, its important to remind the state government that this was subject to certain conditions.

“One of the conditions is that the forest was to be managed in the interest of the government and ldanre people. The gazette equally provides for regular carving out of enclaves and farm settlements to accommodate farming and related activities of the growing population of the ldanre people.

“lt is, therefore, laudable that when your government came on board it started a policy of integration of the farmers in the area, from records, it’s clear that my people have been meeting all the conditions laid down by your good government in the Agro – forestry arrangement.”

The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN has increased the Monetary Policy Rate, MPR also known as interest rate to 13 per cent.

The MPR is the benchmark interest rate for determining other interest rates in the economy.

It was was first time, in two years, that the Monetary Policy Committee, MPC under the leadership of CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele has raised the rate, which before now stood at 11.5 per cent.

The apex bank Governor announced this on Tuesday while speaking to reporters at the end of the monthly MPC meeting, in Abuja.

Emefiele said the rate was raised in line with recent global trends, explaining that the new 13 per cent interest rate will checkmate inflation in the country.

According to him, “The sharp rise in inflation across both the advanced and emerging market economies has generated growing concerns among central banks as the progressive rise in inflation driven by rising aggregate demands and wage growth has put sustainable pressure on price levels,” said Emefiele.

“Consequently, the major central banks such as the U.S. Fed, the Bank of England, European Central Bank, and Bank of Canada have provided strong guidance of a progressive shift away from monetary policy accommodation to drive market interest rate which may ultimately impact capital flows away from emerging market economies.”

Breaking down how the committee members voted, Emefiele disclosed that six out of the 11 members of the committee voted to raise the key rate.h

The committee, he explained, also voted to retain the asymmetric corridor at +100 and -700 basis points around the MPR, as well as Cash Reserved Ratio, CRR at 27 per cent.
