Tinubu won  the nomination as APC’s flagbearer on Tuesday, June 7.

The promise to deliver Tinubu comes as the party searches for an appropriate running mate for the candidate.

Kekemake said Tinubu has the requisite experience to transform the country.

The statement reads:

“Without doubt, your election demonstrated an overwhelming support from Nigerians across the geo-political zones which was a clear indication that Nigerians want you as their next president.

“The APC in the South-West stands by you in every step you take in the journey to the Presidency, and we like to assure you that we will deliver the votes of the South-West in not less than 90 per cent of total registered voters in the region.

“We are one with our governors, National Assembly members, State Assembly members, local governments and indeed all leaders and members of our great party within the South-West region at this movement.

“We send you our hearty congratulations, and we pray that this will be the beginning of a turnaround for Nigeria in terms of security, economic development, infrastructural upgrading, agric development and housing for the entire population of Nigeria.

“We appeal to all Nigerians to stand up and be counted in this noble movement to build on the legacies of President Muhammadu Buhari which will put Nigeria in its proper place in the comity of great nations.”

Meanwhile, Tinubu has assured his party that the issue of his running mate will be decided soon. It’s my ‘pocketbook’, Tinubu said after visiting President Buhari in Aso Rock on Thursday.

Since he became the APC presidential flagbearer, who becomes his running mate has been one of the thorny issues in the party as apprehension continue to loom that he’s likely to pick a Muslim running mate.

Even though the magazine learnt that the presidential hopeful is likely to choose one of the APC governors as running mate, it was also learnt on Friday that the Abdullahi Adamu-led National Working Committee, NWC has decided to keep all options open in deciding an appropriate running mare for Tinubu.

The news making the round that the terrorists who carried out the massacre at St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo on Sunday have been arrested is unfounded.

The rumour filtered in just as the National Security Council, on Thursday, revealed that the Islamic State, West African Province masterminded the deadly attack on St. Francis Catholic Church, Owo, Ondo State that left over 40 people dead on Sunday, June 5, 2022.

The Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, disclosed this to State House correspondents, shortly after the over three-hour council meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari at the Council Chambers in Abuja.

Ondo state Governor, Mr Oluwarotimi Akeredoku has however advised the security council not to hurriedly jump into conclusion about those responsible for the attack.

Investigations revealed that residents in hundreds from nooks and crannies of Owo town besieged the palace of Olowo, Oba Ajibade Ogunoye, to confirm the news of the purported arrest of the suspects.

The news of the rumoured arrest filtered in,  residents who have been mourning the death of their loved ones to the heinous crime besieged the palace to catch a glimpse of bandits at the palace.

Addressing the crowd in Owo dialect, Oba Ogunoye pleaded with them to remain calm, saying he heard the same unconfirmed news just like the residents.

Police Public Relations, Mrs Funmilayo Odunlami in her reaction simply said“Am not aware.”

A source within the Palace of Olowo however told our correspondent the information was only a rumour as there was nothing as such.

“it was only a rumour. The youths besieged the palace in their thousands when the rumour broke out, but it was discovered to be false alarm.

“Kabiyesi was only trying to hail their doggedness as he told them that, ‘I Heard the rumour  like you too and they should be patience to authenticate it.’

It was later discovered that it was only some Fulani/Hausa guys arrested along Owo/Benin boundary in possession of dangerous weapon.

2023: Jonathan Congratulates Atiku, Tinubu, Obi, Other Party Flag Bearers

0
Goodluck Jonathan

Former President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, has congratulated Presidential election flag bearers of various political parties, particularly Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples democratic Party, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu of the All peoples Congress, Peter Obi of the Labour Party  as well as others for the emergence at the conclusion of party primaries, urging them to run a campaign devoid of rancor and divisiveness and utilize the opportunity to promote peace and unity.

Jonathan commended the candidates for their interest in leading the country which he described as  a demonstration of their commitment and belief in the progress of the nation.

Noting that  Nigeria is at a critical junction in its march to nationhood as it grapples with security and economic challenges, Dr. Jonathan stated that the 2023 elections present an opportunity to renew the dreams of our founding fathers and revitalise our economy.

He, however, charged the candidates to, in their campaigns, eschew violence and acts that could encourage any form of bloodletting or exacerbate the national fault lines, noting that it is the responsibility of all political leaders to strive to de-escalate the tension in the country.

He also reminded the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the security agencies of their responsibilities, stressing that the importance of the 2023 election imposes on them a historic burden to continue the process of deepening the reforms of our electoral system.

He stated;“A transparent election will go a long way to increase the confidence of Nigerians in our democracy and restore trust in our public institutions.”

Below is the full text of Dr. Jonathan’s statement:

“I congratulate the winners of the various primaries across the political spectrum, particularly Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu who has won the presidential primary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and  the flag bearers of other parties that have also concluded their primaries.

“They include Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Malik Ado-Ibrahim, Young Progressives Party (YPP), Chief Dan Nwanyanwu, Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), Dumebi Kachikwu, African Democratic Congress (ADC) as well as Adewole Adebayo of the Social Democratic Party (SDP.

“Your emergence as the flagbearers of your parties after submitting yourselves to rigorous selection and election processes demonstrates your belief and interest in the progress of our nation.

“I consider you are all aspiring to be elected as the leader of the country because you are democrats who believe, like the rest of us, that Nigeria is our common heritage which we should all strive to protect, prosper and preserve for the future generation.

“As you progress towards the electioneering campaigns, it is important that the issues confronting the country and credible solutions take centre stage.

“I urge you to conduct your campaigns in a manner devoid of acrimony, divisiveness and treachery so that at the end of the day Nigeria will win, democracy will triumph and humanity will be better for it.

“As I have always said, no ambition is worth the life of another. As candidates, you must eschew violence and acts that will encourage any form of bloodletting or exacerbate the national fault lines. We live in a season of unprecedented violence and all political leaders have a responsibility to de-escalate the tension in the country.

The candidates by conduct and language must prioritise non-violence and peaceful coexistence.

“I also salute the sportsmanship displayed by other aspirants who have continued to lend their weight to the democratic process, despite the fact that they did not emerge victorious in their various party primaries.

“I urge all stakeholders to place national interest above personal interest. We must commit to upholding virtues that will sustain  our democracy and advance the cause of good governance, peace and sustainable development.

“Nigeria is at a critical junction in its march to nationhood as it grapples with security and economic challenges. The 2023 elections present an opportunity to renew our union, rebuild the dreams of our founding fathers and revitalise our economy.

“The importance of this election imposes on the election managers and security agencies a historic burden to continue deepening the reforms of our electoral system. A transparent election will go a long way to increase the confidence of Nigerians in our democracy and restore trust in our public institutions.

“We can attain our national aspirations of unity, peace, and progress through the instrumentality of a functional and effective democracy.

“I urge all leaders, especially politicians, to prioritize the peace and stability of our nation as we commence the activities of the 2023 elections.

“To the good citizens of our beloved country, particularly the youth, I charge you all to make honest and patriotic choices that will guarantee us the hope that we desire for ourselves and our nation.”

APC Convention: SMBLF Lauds President Buhari, Congratulates Tinubu

0
South And Middle Belt Leaders

The Southern and Middle Belt Leaders’ Forum (SMBLF) has hailed President Muhammadu Buhari for not interfering in the just concluded Presidential Primary of the All Progressives Congress, APC, thus making way for a Southern candidate to emerge.

In the June 7, 2022 Primary, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu had beaten 22 other candidates, including the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, President of the Senate, Dr. Ahmad Lawal, and the immediate past Minister for Transportation, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi.

The SMBLF has been in the forefront of pushing for a President of Southern extraction after the eight-year tenure of President Muhammadu Buhari, with an emphasis on justice, fairness and equity.

24 hours to the Primary, the APC National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, caused an uproar when he unilaterally announced that the Party had chosen Lawan as the consensus candidate. He said he had consulted with the President.

It took the firm stand of eleven Northern APC Governors, the stern warning  by the Governor of Ondo State who doubles as the Chairman of the Southern Governors Forum, and the ruggedness and tenacity of Tinubu to abort Adamu’s coup plot. Buhari was to later distance himself from Adamu’s choice, and said he had no candidate, and was not in support of any consensus candidate.

In a statement, the SMBLF hailed Buhari “for staying true to his promise of non-interference in the process of electing the Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Following, the Forum’s statement.

“The  Southern and Middle Belt Leaders Forum has lauded  President Muhammadu Buhari for staying true to his promise of non-interference in the process of electing the presidential candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC). Given the president’s earlier reported request to the APC Governors to allow him pick his successor, SMBLF considers the process leading to the emergence of the APC‘S presidential flag bearer as, reasonably transparent, fair and credible.

“Accordingly, the Forum congratulates former Governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on clinching the APC presidential ticket, following the heart-warming contest. While noting that, his emergence as the presidential flag bearer of the All Progressive Congress satisfies the Forum’s imploration to major political parties in the country, to present southern presidential candidates for the 2023 elections. In observance of the principle of rotation and zoning of key political offices, especially the presidency, between the North and the South, which has been a sine qua non in the nation’s political progression.

“That though SMBLF had preferred the presidential ticket to go to the South-East zone, based on justice, fairness and political inclusiveness, the Forum wishes Bola Tinubu well and urges him to be magnanimous in victory.

“SMBLF was particularly impressed by the nationalistic essence demonstrated by the APC Governors and political leaders of the Northern States, who maintained and followed through on their earlier resolution that the party’s candidate in the 2023 presidential election should come from the southern part of the country; despite the melodrama orchestrated by the National Chairman of the party, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, on the eve of the party’s Special Convention.

“SMBLF anticipates that the Northern Governors and political leaders would prove the same attitude of patriotic resolve during the main presidential election in February 2023.

“SMBLF likewise commends the Chairman of the Southern Governors’ Forum and Governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu, SAN, for his principled insistence on the rotation of the 2023 presidency to the South, unlike some of his colleagues who vacillated.

“It remains the position of the Southern and Middle Belt Leaders’ Forum (SMBLF) that another northern president in 2023, after the statutory eight years of President Muhammadu Buhari, would not only be unfair and unacceptable but deleterious to the peace and unity of Nigeria.

“Accordingly, SMBLF reiterates its call on the people of Southern Nigeria, the Middle Belt region and all well-meaning Nigerians to, as a hallowed responsibility to the nation, VOTE FOR ONLY southern presidential candidates in the 2023 election, in the national interest.”

By Akinwale Kasali

After two successive defeats in the hands of Mexico and Ecuador in  International Friendlies at the United States of America, Super Eagles Portuguese Coach, Jose Peseiro, recorded his first victory in charge of the three- time African Cup of Nations Champions.

The Super Eagles came back from a goal down to defeat Sierra Leone’s National Football Team 2-1 in their 2023 African Cup of Nations qualifiers played at the Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola Stadium.

Joseph Morsey gave the visitors the lead in the 11th minute to put their host on their toes, before Everton Football Club of England midfielder, Alex Iwobi equalized in the 16th minute before Napoli Football Club of Italy Striker, Victor Osimhen scored late in the first half to give the Super Eagles the lead into halftime.

Peseiro started Francis Uzoho in goal, with Oluwasemilogo Ajayi and William Troost Ekong in Central Defense, with Olaoluwa Aina and Calvin Bassey playing in the left and right back position.

Playing a 4-4-2 Formation, Alex Iwobi, Joe Aribo, Moses Simon and Samuel Chukwueze were in the midfield while Victor Osimhen and Sadiq Umar were upfront.

The Super Eagles will go into their second game in the qualifiers against São Tomé and Principe in four days time at the Agadir Stadium in Morocco, hoping to maintain their 100 Percent record in the qualifiers.

Osinbajo Hails Tinubu’s Qualities; Congratulates Him On Victory

0
Bola Tinubu and Yemi Osinbajo

By Adesina Soyooye

Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, has celebrated Asiwaju Bola Tinubu’s sterling qualities.

In a congratulatory letter to Tinubu over his victory at the Presidential Primary Election which took place on Saturday, Osinbajo celebrated his former boss.

“For many decades, our Flagbearer has shown passion, patriotism courage and determination in the cause of nation-building.His sterling contributions to our democracy and its progress stand him out.”

Osinbajo was also a Presidential aspirant. Not a few people had expected he could win, but Tinubu gave him and the others a technical knockout. Osinbajo  came a miserable distant third.

Osinbajo, from Ogun State, was Tinubu’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice when Tinubu was the Governor of Lagos State. Tinubu also, allegedly, nominated him as President Muhammadu Buhari’s running mate. But their relationship soured when Osinbajo declared interest in  succeeding Buhari in 2023, after Tinubu had declared interest in the same office. He was tagged a betrayer.

Following,  the full statement signed, personally, by the Vice President:

“I congratulate Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu on his victory at our party primaries and his emergence as the Presidential Candidate and Flagbearer of our great party, the APC for the forthcoming 2023 Presidential Elections.

“I also congratulate President Muhammadu Buhari and all leaders of the APC for a successful Special Convention and Presidential Primary.

“For many decades, our Flagbearer has shown passion, patriotism, courage and determination in the cause of nation-building. His sterling contributions to our democracy and its progress stand him out.  His wealth of experience will certainly be critical in our party’s continued efforts to attain a more secure and prosperous Nigeria.

“To all members of our great party, regardless of who you voted for at the primaries, we must now unite behind our Presidential Candidate and Flagbearer to ensure victory for our party in the 2023 elections.

“As true progressives, we must remain strong and united in pursuing our collective vision as a party towards building a country that can provide a decent life and livelihoods for all our people.”

Democracy Day: Monday Is Public Holiday

0

By Adesina Soyooye

Monday June 13, 2022, has been declared a Public Holiday by the Federal Government.

According to a statement by  the Minister for Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, it is in commemoration of Democracy Day.

The Nigerian Government had, under former Head of State, General Abdulsami Abubakar, on May 29, 1999,  declared every May 29 Democracy Day because it was the day a Civilian Government under President Olusegun Obasanjo was inaugurated after years of Military Regimes.

But in 2020, President Muhammadu Buhari’s Government shifted it to June 12, in honour of the Late MKO Abiola, who presumably won the election to the office of the President on June 12, 1993, but which was, inexplicably, annulled by the Military Government under General Ibrahim Babangida.

Abiola, sadly died in Military custody, ironically, under the regime of Abdulsalami.

This year’s June 12 fell on a Sunday, and, as is the usual in Nigeria, the public holiday to mark it was shifted to Monday, June 13.
