First Bank’s Staff, Syndicate Fail To Steal N20bn

0

By Tosin Olatokunbo

Stealing a whopping N20 billion from Nigeria’s oldest bank would have shaken the Kazeem Adeduntan-led commercial bank to its very foundation.

No doubt, many heads would have rolled from the top management level to the middle and lower cadres of Nigeria’s oldest commercial bank. But fate had a different plan for three employees of the bank who may have been dreaming of what to do with their share of such a humungous amount of money, if their conspiracy to steal, alongside a syndicate had materialised.

The story. Sometimes last year, three workers of the bank; Ozioma  Ugorji, Ugwu Emeka, and Obike Chukwuka, conspired with a gang of internet robbers to steal the said amount from  the bank using electronic means.

As part of the deal, the syndicate promised to provide a laptop to the employees which will then be connected to the bank’s server to enable the gang skim N20 billion from its account.

But luck ran out of the syndicate after the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC got wind of their plot to connect the computer to tap into the bank’s main server.

The suspects have since been arrested, and are now being tried at a Lagos State Special Offences Court, Ikeja, Lagos.

Speaking to the magazine on condition of anonymity, a top staff of the bank said “the bank was lucky to have busted the syndicate before they perpetrated the fraud.

“The implications of such large amount being stolen from the bank would have been felt by all the stakeholders. The customers would have been apprehensive and the banking sector would have felt the impact of such theft, due to the position of First Bank in the country’s financial sector”.

While arraigning the three suspects on Wednesday, the EFCC said the fraud was stopped due to reliable intelligence by the anti-graft agency.

Explaining what happened at the tribunal on Wednesday, a prosecution witness, Adamu Dahiru, said the suspects were caught while trying to link the laptop they received from the syndicate to the bank’s main server. The laptop has now been confiscated, and currently in the custody of the commission, according to sources in EFCC, who also stated that the anti-graft agency “had gleaned useful information from the laptop that is now being used to prosecute the case”.

The prosecution witness, according to his statement made to the tribunal said the First Bank employees “conspired to give access to a fraudster to defraud the bank of over N20bn. The report we gathered was that the money was in the cloud and they needed to bring it out. The second defendant (Emeka) had a meeting with the syndicate at a hotel,” he said.

He added that, “When the first defendant (Ugorji) was arrested, he made a statement that he was introduced to the syndicate by the third defendant (Chukwuka) and that they had communicated with someone from the headquarters.

“The second defendant made a statement that a laptop was given after several promises that he should connect the laptop to the bank’s system.

“When he was on duty, he connected the laptop to the banking system, but during the connection, the I.P. of the laptop was picked up and the system was destroyed.”

Last August, one Salau Abdulmalik Femi was arrested by detectives from the Special Fraud Unit, SFU of the Nigeria Police Force, NPF for allegedly hacking into the server of a Nigerian bank to steal N1.87 billion.

The suspect, according to checks from the police, is believed to be the kingpin of a syndicate which specializes in hacking servers of commercial banks and other financial institutions. Had he succeeded, the suspect would have committed one of the biggest single electronic frauds in the country.

Shehu Sani Shouts Down Voices Against Hijab; Asks Critics To Go Naked

By Ayodele Oni

Senator Shehu Sani has applauded the Supreme Court judgement which permits girls to wear hijab in public schools in Lagos State.

The Kaduna based former Senator said Nigerians who are criticizing the Supreme Court ruling are free to go naked.

The Apex Court on Friday, last week, ruled that Islamic female students should be allowed to appear in Lagos State public schools with their hijab.

The development, which angered many Christians, triggered a Lagos-based human right Lawyer, Malcom Omoirhobo to appear at the Supreme Court in Abuja on Thursday, dressed as a native doctor, claiming it is his own religion.

Reacting, Shehu Sani in a post on his verified Facebook page, expressed anger over the ongoing protests against the approval of hijab.

According to him, the Lawyer and other aggrieved Nigerians should remove their clothes completely instead of dressing in traditional attires.

“The Lawyer who went to the Supreme Court in the garb of a Herbalist or Traditional religionists should have gone there naked; that is the original appearance of our ancestors hundreds of thousands of years ago.

“If you don’t like the Hijab ruling, remove your clothes completely and cover some parts with leaves and the protest is real.”

Peter Obi’s Camp Supporting Governor Soludo – Obi’s Aide, Obienyem

0
Peter Obi and Charles Soludo

In a letter to the Governor of Anambra State, Professor Charles Soludo, one of Peter Obi’s closest Aide, Valentine Obienyem, assures Soludo that Obi’s camp is in full support of his (Soludo’s) Government.

This followed the story which made the rounds in the Social Media over the worth, now, of Anambra State’s Government investment in SABMiller under Obi as Governor.

Earlier, when the stories made the rounds, and names were thrown in here and there, Obienyem had said that: “The claim that Professor Soludo, the Sultan of Sokoto, or Fmr. Emir of Kano, said this or that about Mr Peter Obi did not come from him, nor his Media Office.

“However, the record of his 20 million dollars investment in SABmiller, which has been appreciating is verifiable.

“Obi’s campaign mantle is moving Nigeria from a consuming to a producing country. All his supporters are respectively enjoined to key into the vision and desist from sharing unverified news items.”

But Soludo’s camp seem to be in a foul mood. Their responses, apparently, targeted at Obi, prompted Obienyem to write a letter to Soludo.

Said Obienyem in the letter: “I only want to assure you that the Obi camp is supporting you. We want you to succeed and cannot be part of any plot against you. Some people are angry because we have chosen to identify with you.”

Following is Obienyem’s letter to Governor Soludo.

“Our Dear Prof. Soludo,

“Let me, once again, congratulate you on emerging as the Governor. As I have always reminded you, going by your pedigree,  we are hopeful that you will repair the wrongs in the State. When the state works, it is for the benefit of all.

“On the day you were sworn-in, our joy was near- complete on the attendance of Mr. Peter Obi, only to be completed when you allowed him the use of Government House Hall to meet Traditional Rulers. For everybody, that is the way to go.

“The banters by Traditional Rulers on that day revealed their hidden joy at the development. Watching them intently, I noticed many of them gazing at Obi with eyes dripping with admiration and devotion as they took him as the redeeming angel of the bastardised country.

“As far as I was concerned, two  illustrious and experienced Anambra sons were united together in maturity and wisdom.

“When the news of the multiplication of Obi’s investment in SABMiller was published, I knew it did not come from you. I personally made it clear that it was not circulated by Obi’s Media, but probably by one of the youths, not under our control, but eager to throw in anything that glorified their hero – Obi.

“Do not judge Obi’s supporters based on these people’s cathartic reactions.

“It was saddening when one of the people you later appointed an aide, in a bashful, pugilistic manner, said I was the one that published it. When your Media Aide rebutted it, I said he did what he was supposed to do. My argument was simple: Even if the news was true, it is wrong to put into your mouth what you did not say.

“I read the recent rebuttal by your Commissioner on the subject. What do I say about it? I only want to assure you that the Obi camp is supporting you. We want you to succeed and cannot be part of any plot against you. Some people are angry because we have chosen to identify with you It is about time they realised that our only interest is recovering the eight years of retrogression.

“Anybody supporting Obi that fights you is on his own. I say this with all sincerity, especially knowing the brief I personally received from Mr. Peter Obi on this.

“Obi is ready to offer any support that will redeem our State and set it on the path of progress again.

“The way things are, anybody fighting you at the January of your tenure is simply being inconsiderate and insensitive.

“Please, always sieve everyday, reactions by people from the reaction from Mr. Obi’s official camp.

“As for Soludo’s supporters, take us as friends. We are one with you in the belief that Prof.  Soludo should succeed for the good of our state.

Ekweremadu On Way To Turkey For New Kidney Donor; His Letter To Embassy Revealed; Boy Ran To Police To Report

0
Ike Ekweremadu and his Letter

By Tosin Olatokunbo

Detained former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, had the sum of $20,000 on him when he and his wife, Nwanneka, were arrested at the Heathrow Airport, London on Tuesday.

It has also been revealed that they were on their way to Turkey for a new donor when they found out that the earlier arrangement with the 15 year- old boy has failed because the Royal Free Hospital found out he was underage, and refused to go on with the proceedings.

Apparently, the Ekweremadus knew the arrangement had failed before they left Nigeria for London. To pay to a new donor, it is speculated, must be why they were carrying the sum of $20,000 on them. What is not known is if they knew that the boy had ran away and  reported his fate to the Police because, according to reports from the Court, the family he was kept with had, allegedly, started maltreating him.

It is not known why the family started to treat him badly, but speculation, again, is that they may have found he was no use to the Ekweremadus since he told the hospital his real age, which necessitated his rejection by the hospital.

The questions are: Between  the boy and the Royal Free Hospital, who tipped off the Police? Was it the hospital, on finding out his age? Or, was it the boy on finding out that he was no longer of use to the Ekweremadus and could be taken back to Nigeria?

However, Senator Ekweremadu, in a letter he wrote to the Visa  section of the British High Commission, Abuja, had informed them of the boy’s trip and why and what  he was going to London to do.

The letter dated December 28, 2021, reads:

“Dear Sir/Madam

“RE-MEDICAL VISION APPLICATION FOR UKPO NWAMINI DAVID

“I am writing in support of the visa application made by Mr Ukpo Nwamini David who is currently having medical investigations for a kidney donation to Ms Sonia Ekweremadu.

“David and Sonia will be at the Royal Free Hospital, London, and I will be providing the necessary funding. I have enclosed a statement of my bank account.

“Please, do not hesitate to contact me if you require additional  information.

“Please, accept the assurances of my highest regards.

“Yours faithfully,

“SENATOR IKE EKWEREMADU, PhD, CFR.”

The question, however, is: Did the 15 year old boy consent to the donation of his organ to Ekweremadu’s daughter? Following are the steps and rules for organ donation in the United Kingdom.

Organ Donor in the UK

“While it is legal to donate  organs in the UK, the donor must be related to the recipient and above 18.

“The donor must consent.

“The donor must not receive any form of payment as an organ donor.

“While in rare cases, a non-relative can donate an organ. However, You must prove beyond all justifications why a non-relative is desirous to donate an organ to you and not another person with kidney failure. What gesture have you or your family extended to the donor in the past?”

Those who know say the the list of those in need of organs are in the thousands.

Insisted one of the sources:

“The UK NHS uses an organ register and more than 8000 are on the waiting list. This allows living or a deceased donor to freely donate organs without even knowing the recipient. That’s what they consider altruistic.

“Any other way is “considered” an organ harvest and it’s a crime, especially if they have obtained an oral interview from the “child donor” and she confessed “daddy and mummy” asked me to do it.

“This is why it is  a dicey situation and very complicated. Ike Ekweremadu and his wife are in a serious issue.”

So, the question: Was this boy out to dupe the Ekweremadus?

It has been alleged that he deliberately went to seek asylum when he knew the deal was off. The allegations are: (a) Either he changed his mind and decided to be smart and  seek for asylum, or (b)The organs did not match and he decided to stay on in the UK by seeking asylum.

But another question: Would the Ekweremadus risk sending him to the UK if they did not confirm that the organs would match, especially, as he travelled with their daughter?

A source close to them said the boy was out to dupe them and had planned to seek asylum.

In a post on the Social Media, one Ikem Okuhu, apparently close to the Ekweremadus wrote:

Facts On The Ike Ekweremadu Matter

  1. Ike Ekweremadu wasn’t involved in any organ trafficking.
  2. He has a daughter who needs a transplant.

3.A willing donor was seen in Nigeria and preparations were made.

4.Ike Ekweremadu did write to the British High Commission explaining the situation.

5.The donor travelled to the UK with the patient.

  1. The donor is a 21 year old man, and not a girl as many are writing.

7.He is not a minor.

  1. As it happened, the organ did not even match.
  2. Not wanting to return to Nigeria, the donor went to report that he was trafficked to London for possible organ harvest, believing same would guarantee him asylum.

That’s the other perspective. I will update as I obtain more information.

When the Ekweremadus appeared at the Uxbridge Magistrate Court on Thursday, they were refused bail on the excuse that they are flight risks, even though, as pointed out, and pleaded by their defence Counsels, they had submitted all their travel documents.

The case is adjourned to July 7, 2022.

Obi Disrupts Church Service; Archbishop Obinna Asks For Calm; Uzodinma Charges New Archbishop, Ugorji

0
Peter Obi

By Charles Igbo

The mere mention of Peter Obi’s name at the Church Service to install His Grace, The Most Rev. Lucius Ugorji, as the Catholic Archbishop of Owerri Ecclesiastical Province, disrupted the proceedings. Venue was the Maria Assumpta Catholic Cathedral, Owerri.

Present were the Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodinma, 42 Bishops including two Cardinals, and an array of high profile guests.

The disruption was sparked by the Archbishop Emeritus of the Province, His Grace the Most Reverend Anthony Obinna, by just performing his duties.

As Obinna acknowledged the presence of guests, the congregation at the colourful ceremony, just clapped politely. The trouble was Peter Obi. As soon as Obinna acknowledged his presence, “hell” was literally let lose. The Congregation rose in wild applause. And, for minutes on end, they continued. An equally helpless, but excited Obinna, kept asking the congregation to calm down, but to no avail. The more he appealed to them, the more they applauded.

He, unwittingly, poured petrol into a raging fire, when he mentioned the word “OBIdient”. That is the “charm” for millions of Obi’s supporters. As the applause continued, Peter Obi, blushing, put his face down, and hid his discomfort, by flipping through the pages of the program.

The new Catholic  Archbishop of Owerri Ecclesiastical Province, His Grace, Most Rev Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji, was installed in his See on Thursday.

Governor Uzodinma  reminded him that much is expected from him as the Shepherd of the faithful.

Archbishop Ugorji was installed by the Papal Nuncio in Nigeria, Archbishop Antonio Guido Filipazzi ( as representative of the Pope) at a Pontifical Mass celebrated at the Maria Assumpta Cathedral Owerri, the Imo State capital.

Addressing the congregation at the end of Mass, Governor Uzodimma described the day as not only “a special day,” but “a solemn day that signifies glorious transition of authorities from the Archbishop Emeritus, His Grace, Most Rev. (Dr.) Anthony John Valentine Obinna to His Grace, Most Rev. Dr Lucius Ugroji.”

The Governor informed Archbishop Ugorji that much is expected of him by the Clergy and the Laity as “the Archdiocese of Owerri is the spiritual headquarters of Catholic faithful and other Christians of Imo and Abia States.”

He equally told Archbishop Ugorji that the faithful in the Archdiocese look up to his new office for their spiritual wellbeing “and as such are of great expectations of fulfillment under his spiritual administration.”

Governor Uzodimma noted that the Archbishop was coming at a time when the nation was at a crossroads “with heightened insecurity, youth restiveness and aftermath of global pandemics and its economic hardship.”

However, he expressed confidence in the ability of Archbishop Ugorji, based on “his pedigree, educational qualifications and pastoral experiences” as “the right man at the right time well prepared for the job.”

The Governor, therefore, described Ugorji and the challenges before him as “a round peg in a round hole.”

Continuing, Governor Uzodimma told the Archbishop that the society expects him “to provide the needed direction, unwavering voice to the voiceless and more importantly, justice to all and sundry.

“Many will expect the Archbishop to be that Angel on earth who will carry the work of God without fear, favour or sentiment, I urge him to stand up at all times for the truth, fairness and justice for all.”

He assured the Archbishop that his administration will continue to partner with the Church to provide quality service to the people.

To the Emeritus Archbishop AJV Obinna,  Governor Uzodimma appreciated his contributions and hard work in the growth, development and expansion of the work of God in the Archdiocese since he took over the mantle of leadership in the Diocese with his “style of aggressive evangelism.”

He commended Archbishop Obinna, saying under his watch, the Archdiocese witnessed the planting of Parishes as well as the ability of the former Archbishop to weather the storm of many battles he faced in the course of carrying out the work of God in the Archdiocese.

He likened Archbishop AJV Obinna to St. Paul of the Bible describing him as ‘’one who has fought a good fight and has finished the race.’’ He wished him the best of retirement.

In his thank you remarks, Archbishop  Ugorji extended his hands of partnership to government, cavassed for peace in Imo State and beyond as the bed rock of development and urged all to come together and work to save our people from the trauma they are going through.

He called on all gladiators to sheathe their sword and join hands to work and walk with him for the overall welfare of the people.

Archbishop Ugorji reminded the congregation that the Church is one body in Christ through baptism and promised to engage the Archdiocese on entrepreneurship that will strengthen the economy and be able to generate revenue to empower the idle youths and the unemployed graduates in the Archdiocese.

“The Church is a gift and a great responsibility and will take steps towards self-reliance, development and expansion of the gospel through evangelism.”

He appreciated the great work done by his predecessor and recognised that Archbishop Obinna left a big shoe in the Archdiocese, but assured that he was coming on board with “a Custom-made shoe” that will suit the Church’s vision and mission and the expectations of the faithful.

In his Homily,  the Papal Nuncio of Nigeria,  His Grace, Most Rev. Antonio Guido Filipazzi charged the Bishops and the priests to remember the consequences of professing the word of God by their own wisdom and authority rather than to be always guided by the Holy Spirit.

He bemoaned insecurity in Nigeria, poor economy and condemned in strong terms the attack on the Church particularly by those who threatened to kill a Bishop.

Archbishop Filipazzi described the transition and installation of the new Archbishop as a spiritual demand and programme ordained by God which he said, marks a serious chapter in the Body of Christ.

The installation ceremony was attended by 42 Bishops, including two Cardinals – Cardinal John Onaiyekan and Cardinal Peter Okpaleke, three Apostolic Papal Nuncios, many Reverend sisters and Knights of the Catholic Church.

Apart from Governor Uzodimma, other prominent persons who witnessed the ocassion include the Deputy Governor of Abia State, Udeh  Okochukwu, wife of the Deputy Governor of Imo State, Dr. Bola Njoku, Speaker of the Imo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Kennedy Ibe, former Governor of old Abia State and immediate past minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, the former Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi, Senator Victor Umeh, among numerous other prominent persons from Imo State and beyond.

Archbishop Ugorji is a native of Naze, Imo State.  Until his appointment as the Archbishop of Owerri Ecclesiastical Province, he was in charge of the Umuahia Ecclesiastical Province. He succeeds Obinna who officially retired this month after 50 years of glorious service in God’s vineyard.

Ike Ekweremadu and his Wife

Former Deputy Senate President, Dr Ike Ekweremadu, 60,  and his wife, Dr Nwanneka Ekweremadu, 55, are to remain in custody, in London, until July 7, 2022.

The Uxbridge Magistrate Court, to which they were arraigned,  denied them bail, and adjourned the case to July 7, 2022.

The Ekweremadus were arrested, detained and taken to Court Thursday afternoon, on the allegation that they were involved in a conspiracy to harvest the organ of a 15-year old.

Ekweremadu’s daughter needed a kidney transplant in London where she has been, waiting for a donor.

The alleged victim, the Court was told, who has now been safe-guarded by the Police, was picked by the Ekweremadus from the streets of Lagos.

There have been other versions to the story too.

One of the stories alleged the victim was a willing donor who got to London, turned rogue, and reported the Ekweremadus to the Immigration where he went to seek asylum.

Another version alleged that, yes, he was a willing donor, who was promised University education in London, and whose mother had already  been paid, but  was rejected by the doctors at the hospital who, on suspicion, given the age,  tipped the Police off.

Driver, Who Drove Burning Tanker To Save Lives, Rewarded By Omo-Agege; “I Did Not Reject National-Driver

Driver Who Drove Burning Tanker

By Ayodele Oni

Despite the hardship, occasioned by the downward economic trend, there are still Nigerians who can lay down their life to save their fellow.

This is the case of a Tanker driver who is now being rewarded for his bravery by the Deputy Senate President, Senator Ovie Omo – Agege. He gave him one million Naira.

Omo- Age, who is the Delta State Governorship candidate of the All Progressive Congress, (APC), said the donation, which is personal, is a reward for the brave Tanker driver, Ejiro Otarigho.

The heroic  Otarigho had, on June 10, 2022,  driven a burning tanker, fully  loaded with petrol from a densely populated area in Agbarho, Delta State, to the riverside, thus, saving hundreds of lives and property worth billions of naira.

A statement on Thursday by the Director of Communications to the Senator, Ima Niboro, explained that the act was captured by onlookers on video and has since gone viral.

According to the statement, Agbarho, a Community in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State, is in Delta Central Senatorial District, which Senator Omo-Agege represents at the National Assembly.

In applauding the tanker driver, the lawmaker said his courageous action saved not only his Constituents, but prevented a National catastrophe and mourning.

The amount, Omo-Agege stated, was his personal donation to appreciate him for risking his life to save others.

Responding, Otarigho thanked the Deputy Senate President for the donation, even as he used the opportunity to debunk media reports that he was not interested in National Honour but in a new tanker.

“I look forward to coming to Abuja for the National Honour recommended for me to the President by the Senate. I wish to thank him again for moving the motion.”

Last week, the Senate resolved to honour Ejiro Otarigho for his heroic act.

The Red Chamber also recommended him to President Muhammadu Buhari for National Honour.

This followed a motion moved by the Deputy President of the Senate, and co-sponsored by Senator James Manager (PDP, Delta South) and Senator Peter Nwaoboshi (APC, Delta North).

Update: How Ekweremadu Was Betrayed; Denied Bail, Remains In Custody; Daughter Needed Kidney Transplants

0
Ike Ekweremadu and his Wife

By Tosin Olatokunbo

Former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, has been denied bail, Thursday, by an Uxbridge Magistrate Court, London.

This is as it was revealed that Ekweremadu’s daughter needed a kidney transplant. For that, according to a post by Oseni Rufai, Ekweremadu allegedly, illegally procured travel documents for a homeless 15 year old, and allegedly, put his age at 21. He was said to have promised the minor a better life.

Rufai’s post reads: “Ekweremadu’s daughter needed a kidney.  So, he brought a 15 year old homeless boy illegally obtained passport stating the boy was 21. The boy was promised a better life. The former Senate President has been denied bail.”

But another source who pleaded for anonymity because he was not permitted by the family explained wrote:

“The Senator’s first daughter needed a transplant. The choice the couple had were to file an application and wait for a willing or matching donor or to find one from Nigeria.

“The Ekweremadus took a willing donor to London but I don’t know whether they met with all legal documentation. They may have but there is certainly a complication somewhere for the police to arrest them.

“The donor apparently disappeared on getting to London, only to resurface at Immigration to ask for asylum. I guess this was what triggered a police investigation.

“The issue will most likely be resolved if the Met Police is satisfied that there is no criminal intent.

“This is not an official position because I do not speak for the family. So do not quote me please. I only write this because I feel for them and for their daughter who is still battling for life as her parents are locked up.”

Senator Ekweremadu and his wife, Nwanneka, were arrested on arrival at the Heathrow Airport, London, by the Metropolitan Police, and slammed into detention. They were taken to Court Thursday, June 23, 2022, and were charged with alleged organ harvesting and conspiracy.

The child has been taken into safety.
