NIMASA: Court of Appeal President Lauds Jamoh’s Commitment To Admiralty Law

0
Bashir Jamoh

Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, President of the Courts of Appeal has commended Bashir Jamoh, Director General of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA for his exemplary leadership role in supporting the adjudication and mediation in admiralty matters.

Speaking at the recently held Nigeria Shippers Council (NSC) seminar for judges in Abuja, Justice Dongban-Mensem said Dr Jamoh is contributing immensely to keeping judicial officers abreast with relevant knowledge to handle maritime matters.

The Court of Appeal President who participated in a similar seminar for judges organised by NIMASA, added that the DG has set worthy examples for other agencies, which has increased judges’ capacity to perform better.

Jamoh’s impact touches on areas like timely and easier interpretation of Suppression of Piracy and other Maritime Offences, SPOMO Act which aims at achieving a safer maritime domain; alternative dispute resolution in the maritime industry; limits of admiralty jurisdiction in Nigeria amongst others.

Under Jamoh’s watch as NIMASA DG, Nigeria recorded its first conviction of pirates using the SPOMO Act at the Federal High Court Port Harcourt in August 2020.

The convicted three persons were accused of involvement in the hijack of an Equatorial Guinean flagged vessel named, MV ELOBEY VI, off Equatorial Guinea’s coast.

Ondo: Akeredolu Promises To Clear Workers’ Salary Arrears Before Leaving Office

Governor Rotimi Akeredolu

By Ayodele Oni

Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo has promised to clear the arrears of salaries owed civil servants in the state before he leaves office.

The governor said he was pained that his government is owing workers, blaming the outbreak of COVID 19 in 2020 for the problem.

Two years after the pandemic that left much of the world’s economies prostrate the governor, said the impact of the global pandemic  has continued to take its toll on resources of the state.

He said he’s worried that despite serious efforts to make workers of the state happy with timely payment of salaries, the current economic realities have not allowed him to fulfill that responsibility.

The Secretary to the State Government, (SSG), Princess Oladunni Odu, spoke on behalf of the Governor at a public forum in Akure, the Ondo State capital.

Odu said: “Governor Akeredolu and the state government will leave this state better than we met it.

Recall that the present administration inherited seven months of unpaid workers salaries and backlog of gratuities for retirees, when it came into office.

The administration has paid some of the inherited workers benefits but since the outbreak of COVID 19, during which workers could not come to offices, fresh unpaid salaries started to accumulate.

The government scribe continues “Yes, we have our lapses and weaknesses because we have not been able to pay four months salary and if the Governor is here today, he would say it because he feels pained that he can not pay salaries as and when due.

“It is because we were not prepared for covid-19. Covid came and everything went down and we are yet to recover from covid-19.

“You will remember when Governor Akeredolu came on board, he met seven months salary arrears and within a short time, he did pay six months of the seven months arrears.

“The Governor believes a labourer deserves his wages and the wages should be paid as and when due, but he has promised at several fora that he would not leave the state without paying all the salaries to Workers.”

WAFCON: Super Falcons Zoom Into Knockout Phase, To Face Cameroon

By Akinwale Kasali

The Super Falcons recorded a 4-0 win over debutants, Burundi in the last Group C match to finish the Group Phase as runners-up to the Bayana Bayana of South Africa.

With the victory, Nigeria finished with six Points following their wins against Botswana and Burundi, and will face the Indomitable Lioness of Cameroon in the Quarter Finals of the Championship.

Coach Randy Waldrum made four changes to the team that filed out against Botswana three days ago by starting Christy Ucheibe, Nicole Payne, Uchenna Kanu and  Nkechi Efih.

This, however,  paid off as the Super Falcons took the lead in the 25th minute from the penalty Spot through Rasheedat Ajibade who was fouled by the Burundian Goalkeeper, before Kanu and Efih added to the tally to give Nigeria a 3-0 lead going into the half time break.

On resumption of the second half, the Super Falcons started from where the finished the first half, mounting pressure on the Burundians, with Kanu recording her brace in the 47th minute to put the game beyond their opponent.

South Africa on the other hand won all their three Group matches, defeating Botswana 1-0 in their last match and would face Tunisia in the Quarter Finals of the Championship.

Host, Morocco, also recorded three wins in the Group Stage to top Group A and will face Botswana, while Senegal will face Zambia in the Quarterfinals.

With this development, either of Nigeria, the most ranked team in Africa and the second most ranked team in the Continent, Cameroon, will not hoist its flag at the 2023 FIFA World Cup scheduled for New Zealand and Australia.

PDP Crisis: Governors Wike, Ortom, Makinde, Okezie In London; To Meet Atiku

0
Makinde and Okezie in London to meet Wike

By Adesina Soyooye

There is an air of excitement  in the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, especially, in the camp of its Presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

Four PDP Governors, Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, Samuel Ortom of Benue, Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia, and Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, are in London for a meeting. Also in London  are other PDP stakeholders.

Even though it is not known why they are in London, there are strong speculations they are there for a reconciliation meeting with the Party’s Presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, who is also in London.

The PDP has been engrossed in crisis since its Presidential Primary, and especially, since Atiku, to the disappointment of many ignored the recommendation of a Committee set-up by him and the PDP to choose his running mate. The Committee had, overwhelmingly, chosen Wike who came a respectable second in the Primary, and has been a strong pillar of the Party. But Atiku ignored their recommendation and settled for Delta State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa.

Since then,  Wike has said no word. Instead, his private residence in Porthacourt has become a go-to for Politicians from across Political Party lines.

From the Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, to that of the New Nigerian Peoples Party, Rabiu Kwankwaso to three Governors of the All Progressives, Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State, Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State and Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, his house has  become a Mecca of sorts. And it has caused a lot of discomfort within the PDP.

After the visit by the three APC Governors to him on Friday, former Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, dismissed the trip to Porthacourt on the part of the Governors as a waste of time. He insisted that the PDP would never allow the APC to snatch Wike away. “Wike is going nowhere”, he declared on Saturday.

It is hoped by the Party’s teeming supporters that the meeting in London would enable them sort their differences out.

This magazine gathered that one of the issues to be discussed include the fate of the National Chairman of the Party, Dr Iyorchia Ayu.

Not a few members of the Party stakeholders insist that since he comes from the North, and Atiku also comes from the North, Ayu should make way for a National Chairman of Southern extraction.

2023: Reactions After Tinubu Picked Fellow Muslim As Running Mate

0

Mixed reactions have continued to trail the selection of Ibrahim Shettima as running mate by Ahmed Tinubu, the Presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.

Tinubu announced his decision when he paid a Salah homage to President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday, in Katsina state, saying “he was yet to inform” Shettima, a former governor of Borno state, and one of the arrow heads of his campaign to secure the party’s presidential ticket, during the May shadow election by APC to select it’s presidential flagbearer.

His resolved to pick Shettima came after Ibrahim Masari who had earlier been selected by the APC candidate, stepped down. The former APC Welfare Secretary, was picked last month to beat the deadline set by the INEC for political parties to submit their presidential nominees.

The APC had said that Masari would fill in the gap while it sourced for an acceptable vice presidential election.

Tinubu, has however , shocked not a few Nigerians by picking Shettima a Muslim like him as his running mate ahead the 2023 presidential election.

Watchers of the nation’s politics insist that a Muslims/ Muslim ticket will further polarised Nigeria as a multi-religious nation.

But, Tinubu says the reason he picked Shettima is because he’s competent, and will help him win the presidential election next year.

According to him, Shettima was selected because the former Borno State governor is “competent, capable, reliable and able to be picked as a running mate”.

Reacting to the development, the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo, SAN, described Shetima as a worthy choice of a running mate to the APC candidate.

Keyamo who spoke on his Twitter handle, described Shettima as a “Quintessential banker and economist, suave gentleman and politician.”

Tthe former Borno governor is “inter-generationally mobile (he’s young, yet experienced), fiercely loyal, phenomenally complimentary to Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” the minister said, adding that, “Kashim Shettima is the perfect choice as VP.”

But the Christian Association of  Nigeria, CAN is not happy with Tinubu’s vice presidential choice.

Speaking in an interview with our correspondent on Sunday, CAN’s spokesperson, Adebayo Oladeji, said making such a decision in a polarised country was a wrong move.

He warned Nigerians of dire consequences if Tinubu is elected president next year.

He said, “We knew this was what he was going to do and we have warned against it. It is up to Nigerians to decide on what they want.

“You are all alive when we warned Buhari not to allow Muslims to dominate the security architecture of the country and he did it. I think we can see the way the criminals are operating with impunity.

“So, if Tinubu says he is opting for a Muslim-Muslim ticket in a polarised country like ours , if Nigerians endorse him and vote for him, whatever happens, Nigerians will face the consequences.

“If you have a government where a pastor is a vice president and pastors and worshipers are being killed you can imagine what will happen when we have a Muslim-Muslim ticket.

“It is left to Nigerians to make their choice, let them vote them in and we will all face the consequences together.

“We are raising our alarm. It is an irony that Buhari they regarded as an extremist when we raised an alarm to warn him against a Muslim-Muslim ticket, he heeded and opted for a christian as his vice presidential candidate, ” Oladeji said.

I Deliberately Lied Against Agbaso, Chikwe, Ahize – Jacob Okoli; Begs For Forgiveness

0
Martin Agbaso and Hope Uzodinma

By Charles Igbo

A Politician from Imo State, Jacob Okoli, has confessed that he deliberately lied against innocent prominent politicians in the State – Chiefs Martin Agbaso, Charles Ahize and Chikwem Onuoha in an article which went viral, at least in the State.

In fact, he also lied against the State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma.

In a write-up, titled How Hope Uzodinma Hijacked Peter Obi’s Labour Party he impinged on their character and presented them as people nobody should trust. In the process, even though he claims to be a member of the Labour Party, LP, he succeeded in planting distrust and confusion among the Party members.

He had alleged that all the three men, formally of the All Progressives Congress, APC, were planted by Uzodinma to invade the LP  take it over, and work against the Presidential aspiration of its candidate, Mr Peter Obi.

To do that, he said that while Ahize who is vying for the Senatorial seat of Imo West, was given the sum of N300m by Uzodinma to destabilise the LP in Orlu, Agbaso was given the sum of N70 million to take over Imo East Senatorial District.

In a swift response, Agbaso dismissed such claim as a lie from the pit of hell, saying he would never work against LP’s Presidential candidate on behalf of Governor Uzodinma.

But in a written public apology, the writer, Jacob Okoli, said: “I make bold to say that I did not only lie in that article, but erred also by taking advantage of the dislike of Governor Hope Uzodinma by Imo people to manipulate their minds into believing that those who genuinely failed (sic) out with him in APC because of his anti democratic handling of the party’s primaries in Imo State could easily be accepted as moles once I make such claim.”

He begs for forgiveness.

But, Uzodinma, this medium gathered, shocked that anybody could spin such lies against him out of personal hatred, is considering a Court action.

Following is the full text of Okoli’s letter of apology entitled:

RETRACTION: HOW HOPE UZODINMA HIJACKED PETER OBI’S LABOUR PARTY IN IMO

By Jacob Okoli

Few days ago, I had written an article with the above caption. As I truly intended, the article spread like fire and created the intended suspicion amongst the labour party members in Imo state especially their candidates and even went as far as reducing the trust the party enjoy from their teeming supporters.

Since I wrote that article with the aim of getting at a particular candidate of Labour party whom I bear grudges against, I have had some psychological tormentation because of the harm the article is causing to the Obidient movement which I support even though I am a PDP member. Those who know me especially my close friends right from our days in UNN know that I will easily backtrack on any issue once I’m convinced that I have erred, which is why I am retracting this story now.

Though it’s very difficult to do what I’m doing now, but for the sake of the Peter Obi project which I do not want to be part of anything that will truncate it, I make bold to say I did not only lie in that article but erred also by taking advantage of the dislike of governor Hope Uzodinma by Imo people to manipulate their minds into believing that those who genuinely failed out with him in APC because of his anti democratic handling of the party’s primaries in Imo could easily be accepted as moles once I make such claim.

in the real sense, these politicians I falsely accused to have been sponsored by Hope Uzodinma which included Charles Ahize, Chikwem Onuoha and Martin Agbaso should be instead commended for standing up against the dictatorship of Hope Uzodinma in APC.

As a devoted Catholic, I have sought atonement from God and is therefore confessing my wrong deed here, praying that you will all forgive me as our Father in heaven forgives us when we sin.

I will equally visit the Labour Party Exco in Imo state to formally apologize to them for the embarrassment I have caused the party and the Obidient movement.

To err is human and to forgive is divine. Please let’s continue to sustain the tempo of the Obidient movement in Imo.

I AM SORRY!

South East Group Counsels Wike Over Romance With APC Governors

0
Chief Willy Ezugwu

Prominent pan-Igbo sociopolitical pressure organisation, the South East Revival Group (SERG), has declared that even though Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike of Rivers State knows what is good for him as a politician, Nigeria is in its most slippery political period such that any political move or decision at the current season must never be hastily undertaken by any wise politician.

The SERG, in a statement signed by its President and National Coordinator, Chief Willy Ezugwu, while reacting to the recent visit of All Progressive Congress (APC) governors from the South West of Nigeria to the Governor, the South East group counselled Governor Wike to be careful and patient in taking any political decisions in order not to lose the goodwill he has been able to earn from the masses over the years as a performer.

“As audacious supporters of Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, who is one of those we consider to be outstanding in the build up to the recently concluded presidential primary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), we sincerely counsel the Rivers State Governor to be very cautious in taking political decisions at this time.

“Whether the Governor is aggrieved or not, even though we know that he was betrayed during the presidential primary of his party, the political terrain in Nigeria is too slippery for hasty decisions by any wise politician in the country.

“For keen observers of political trends in Nigeria today, it is clear that the younger generation has largely taken over control of the country’s politics ahead of the 2023 presidential election just as they did in 2015.

“If the older generation of politicians are not careful, they will completely lose relevance in the coming months as campaigns begin.

“It will be suicidal for any politician, who is loved by Nigerians, like Governor Wike to swim against the prevailing national political tides.

“Obviously, those who redirected the politics of the country in 2015, have also taken a position in the current political era.

“Nigerians had yearned for a new bread of leaders (those who belong to the younger generation of politicians) to emerge as presidential candidates across key political parties in Nigeria, but they got disappointed when politicians that ought to have retired from active politics were given presidential tickets to the chagrin of the younger people across the country.

“Apart from the fact that the older generation of politicians who won presidential primaries are largely seen by the youths as corrupt and desperate, Nigerians have been in pains in the last seven years are not keen in repeating the mistake of 2015.

“For this reason, a critical mass of disenchanted citizens, who have been at the receiving end of misused Nigeria’s commonwealth since 1999, which obviously worsened in the last seven years, have now produced a candidate of their choice.

“In the light of this, only wise politicians will look before they leap ahead of the 2023 presidential election.

“We, therefore, urge Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike not to miscalculate or stand on the way of the Nigerian youths, being one of our few leaders who have so far distinguished themselves in the last seven years of misery and pains among the masses”, the group counselled.

I Am Ashamed Of The Military High Command – Fani-Kayode

0
Femi Fani-Kayode

By Femi Fani-Kayode (A response to the Defence HQs)

I read the response from the Defence Headquarters of Nigeria (dated 9. 7. 2022) to my video about the insecurity in the country and the attack on Kuje prison and I was utterly amused.

Given the gravity and seriousness of the deteriorating security situation in our country I did not know whether to laugh or cry when I read through it.

I would advise strongly that the Military High Command and Defence Headquarters spends its time facing up to and fighting the terrorists that have turned our nation into a functional killing field and horrendous bloodbath and abattoir over the last few years and attempt to carry out their constitutional role of protecting us from enemies within and without, rather than trying to engage me in a press war or cow me into silence.

They mentioned my so-called “antecedents” so let me say this: if they knew anything about my real antecedents they will appreciate the fact that attempting to threaten or intimidate me into not pointing out and exposing their abysmal failures can never work.

For the record I have nothing but respect and admiration for the ordinary rank and file and junior and middle rank officers of our Armed Forces who have sacrificed so much, including their lives, and who continue to do so even without the necessary backing and support that they need and deserve from the present Military High Command.

Many of them have fought hard and died on the front line of battle in the most gallant way despite the difficult circumstances they have found themselves in and the uninspiring and poor logistical and moral support they have been offered by their senior colleagues.

Worse still thousands of our civilians have been kidnapped, butchered and subjected to the most horrendous acts of evil and violence by the numerous terrorist organisations that have invaded and plagued our land.

All this yet we are supposed to sit by idly and clap for our Military Field and Operational Commanders when things are clearly going wrong?

Call it “rabble rousing” if you like (as they did in their press statement) but the overwhelming majority of Nigerians are appalled and disgusted with the degree to which our security situation has degenerated and are demanding that the Military High Command either goes or does far better.

Their glaring and embarrassing failures are as repugnant to them as it is to me.

Nigerians are also utterly disgusted at the disdain and contempt with which they carry out their duties and their utter insensitivity to the plight of their own soldiers and the concerns of our people.

They speak of my so-called “ignorance” but is there anything more ignorant than attempting to compel a civilian not to criticise the leadership of the Armed Forces of his country where and when they have failed woefully in their duties and obligations?

We criticised, risked all, suffered to no end and fought Military rule for seven long years when their predecessors in office and very senior colleagues annuled the June 12th election and held power from 1993 till 1999 but now that they have left office and we are in a civilian dispensation they believe we dare not or cannot legitimately criticise them when they get it wrong?

Such delusion and self-serving, self-seeking and vain fantasies beggar belief.

The truth is that I have no business with any serving military officer but rather with the serving Minister of Defence who, though a civilian like me, you must report to under the constitution.

As a former Minister myself and out of respect for his office and person, I will formally and privately raise my concerns and the issue of what I consider to be your glaring incompetence and lack of patriotism and professionalism with him.

I will also give him my recommendations.

This is the best that I can do in the circumstances and that way I would have at least satisfied my conscience and be able to sleep at night.

It is left to him and President Muhammadu Buhari, our President and your Commander-in-Chief, to exercise their discretion and do what they want with it.

They can either take the necessary action or not.

Either way I have NO respect for the leadership of the Armed Forces as presently constitutued and neither am I compelled to do so by decency, morality, the constitution or the law.

The truth is that I am disgusted by their poor performance and utterly ashamed of their shameless impunity.

A citizen complains about the fact that our people are being killed and instead of showing remorse for the dereliction of their duty they are spending their time issuing puerile, infantile and meaningless press statements and trying to rationalise their recurrent and consistent failures.

If you want our respect then do please better. If you do not want to be criticised then work harder.

If you do not want people to demand for your sacking or resignation then do your job and stop seeking to intimidate, attack, discredit or undermine those that criticise you.

I am not an enemy of the military but rather a true friend who is candid and courageous enough to speak the bitter and plain truth even where others dare not.

I am merely saying what millions are thinking and know.

Again I am merely a concerned citizen who is genuinely worried about the way things are going in our country when it comes to security and other matters.

When the leadership of our Armed Forces have got it right on past occassions I have commended their gallantry, professionalism and courage and this is on record.

Given this when they do not rise up to the occassion and their performance is below expectation I reserve the right to criticise them, point out their shortcomings and call for their resignation or removal.

That is the way things work in a nation which prides itself on free speech and given the fact that this is a democracy with laws and a constitution.

We are not a under a military dictatorship and the Military High Command or Defence Headquarters who speak for them cannot silence us or expect us to remain silent when they get things wrong.

I believe that if they had any honor and integrity they would have resigned for their abysmal performance rather than spitting in the wind, beating their chests and pretending that all is well.

Given the fact that they have refused to do this, I once again call on President Muhammadu Buhari, as I did in my video, to retire them and appoint Service Chiefs that can do the job properly and meet the expectations of Nigerians.

For this I offer no apology and I stand by everything that I said in that video including the assertion that the leadership and rank and file of the DSS, NIA and NPF have continued to give the necessary intelligence, confront and tackle the terrorists and do their job as best as they can but the Military High Command have not.

Others may be intimidated and compelled to remain silent but I will not.

Numerous Governors, including the Governor of Zamfara state, have publicly and privately called for Nigerians to arm themselves whilst others, like the Governors of Kaduna state and Niger state, have called for greater efforts on the part of the military to seek out, uproot and confront the terrorists.

Other Governors, like the Governor of Ondo state and indeed ALL the Governors of the South West, have gone as far as to demand that the states and zones have their own Armed militias and police because you have not been able to protect the people.

Such is the level of angst and anger in the land and it is essentially a referendum on your performance.

If all was well not one of these respected individuals or anyone else have cause to complain or demand more from you.

Instead of rectifying the situation the only thing you can do is issue a press statement telling me not to complain?

Do we not have the right to call a spade a spade?

This is especially so when lives are involved and so many have been lost.

Should we suffer this indignity and pain in silence?

Are these incessant attacks and slaughter of innocent people not a disgrace to our nation and to our Armed Forces?

Have we lost all sense of pride, dignity and self respect that our soldiers and civilians are being killed and kidnapped by motorcycle-riding rag-tag bandits and we should just remain silent?

Can we not tell you when we are tired, fed up and have had enough of your failures?

Instead of showing remorse and assuring us that you will do better in the future you issue angry and insolent press statements in an attempt to silence and intimidate.

The truth is you have simply put salt in our wounds and added insult to injuries.

And whether you like it or not I and millions of others will continue to point out the failures of our Military High Command without fear or favour because they are meant to work for us.

We do not work for them. Rather we pay and maintain them with taxpayers money and they do not pay or maintain us.

They cannot impose a culture of silence on us and neither will we accept it.

Most importantly in a civilian dispensation the military are subordinates of the political class and the people and are meant to live up to their expectations.

Where they do not we can ahd must protest and demand for their removal.

They are not above the law, they are not superior to those of us that are not in the military and neither are they immune from criticism or lawful and legitimate sanctions.

Permit me to end with the following:

The way to honor the families and assuage the hurt, sensibilities and pain of the relatives and colleagues of our fallen heroes who the Defence Headquarters referred to in their press statement and the way to heal the wounds of the loved ones of the civilians that have been massacred by terrorists all over the country over the last 7 years is for the military to fight the terrorists with everything they have got in a disciplined, patriotic, professional and honest manner and crush them.

It is not by issuing angry and nonsensical press statements to members of the public and concerned Nigerians and it is not by feigning affection for the families of the victims of your own incompetence and all those dear and gallant souls that we have lost.

Nigerian Lady, Kemi Badenoch, Vies To Succeed Boris Johnson As British Prime Minister

By Adesina Soyooye

She is a combination of brain, beauty and brawn. She has guts and plenty of self-esteem.

In a first, Nigerian- born Lagos State girl, Olukemi Olufunto Badenoch, (née Adegoke) has thrown her hat in the ring as one of those aspiring to replace British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson in office.

Mrs Badenoch wants to be the British Prime Minister.

2023: Why I Shunned Christians For A Muslim-Muslim Presidential Ticket

0
Bola Ahmed Tinubu

By Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu

  1. Fellow Nigerians, we enter a moment of renewed hope. We hold the chance to move the nation and our collective cause forward as never before. Let us seize this moment so that history may write kindly of us.
  1. It is time to focus with utmost devotion and love of country to do all we can do to advance the ideals of democratic and progressive good governance in the land.
  1. We must end poverty and bring greater prosperity and more lasting peace. Let us be wise of thought yet courageous in action, as we embark on a collective enterprise that brings jobs, education, food, medicine, hope and belief in a better life to those who need them.
  1. I stand ready to begin this journey with you, hopefully, to lead the nation on this needed path as your next President by the grace of God. I believe this is a pivotal moment at which the dynamics of history and destiny call us forth to reshape our beloved nation. This is our moment.
  1. We all must answer the nation’s call. For some, this requires of us that we step forward, assuming new roles and responsibilities. For others, it may mean something else. For all of us, it requires that we dedicate ourselves to the collective national task as never before.
  1. To re-envision and reshape the nation, I must compose the best team possible, a team put together with but one overriding purpose: to forever establish just, capable, and compassionate governance for the people of Nigeria without regard to religion, region, or ethnic origin.
  1. In the weeks since becoming the presidential candidate and standard-bearer of the All Progressives Congress (APC), I have been touched as Nigerians from all walks of life have demonstrated their faith in my capacity to lead this country. I thank you for the outpourings of support for they reveal to me the hope you hold for this nation’s greatness. As long as we walk together and work together, we shall arrive at our national greatness together. To this glad and great endeavour, I fully devote myself and my future labour.
  1. In full compliance with existing law and regulation, I submitted all necessary documents regarding my nomination as the APC presidential candidate to INEC. But, as was expected, the choice of my vice presidential running mate remained an open and burning question.
  1. This gave rise to much speculation and debate.
  2. Recent events [the voluntary withdrawal of my dear friend and brother Ibrahim Masari] mean that I am called upon, today, to put an end to the speculation.
  1. I have never been an indecisive man and have no present intention to become one.
  1. What I am, however, is a democrat. And a democrat must listen to, and consult with, the people and his advisors so that he may reform and govern wisely and on their behalf. This I have done. My political career was not built on blind indifference to the views of others. I appreciate the perspectives of leading members of the party, political allies and key national figures who see Nigeria’s future as I do. They gave me their views so that I might add their valuable insights to mine to reach the best decision possible and do so in a manner that strengthens the institutional fabric of our party as well as accelerating the evolution of our political democracy.
  1. I am also a founding member of the APC. I hold our party’s core principles close to heart such that I shall do nothing to betray the spirit in which the party was created.
  1. Having now listened to the sage, careful advice of a broad section of the party and of the nation, there are a few points I feel I must make about the exceptional and extraordinary person with whom I will share the APC ticket and the principles of open and good governance that informed this choice.
  1. A dominant theme of my political history and my personal life is my staunch belief in our diversity. Greatness lies in embracing our diversity and making it work to enhance the dynamism and justice of our political system. My selection of a running mate comports entirely with this longstanding inclination.
  1. The concurrence of my party in this matter has been a source of comfort and encouragement. We are truly building a progressive party that not only represents a departure from other political parties but one that truly may well be the best hope for democratic good governance in Nigeria.
  1. I realize the momentous times we have entered. I know what lies in the balance. I also know that our political choices and activities send both intended and unintended signals to portions of the Nigerian electorate.
  1. All my life, my decisions regarding the team around and supporting me have always been guided by the principles of competence, innovation, compassion, integrity, fairness, and adherence to excellence.
  1. When I was Governor of Lagos State, these principles helped me assemble one of the most capable governing cabinets any state or this nation has ever seen. I trust enough in these principles to allow them to, once more, guide me to construct another exemplary team that can do Nigeria proud.
  1. Second, this chapter in our country’s history demands a bold yet pragmatic approach, a path already chartered by the progressive ethos of the APC. The foundation for sustainable progress has been laid these past seven years by the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari. The challenges of today are consequential because the lives and livelihoods of millions of Nigerians lie in the balance. Visionary and creative leadership will take us to our goal.
  1. Our focus, therefore, must be on getting the job done; and that means getting the very best and competent people to do it. In this crucial moment, where so much is at stake, we must prioritize leadership, competence, and the ability to work as a team over other considerations.
  1. I am mindful of the energetic discourse concerning the possible religion of my running mate. Just and noble people have talked to me about this. Some have counselled that I should select a Christian to please the Christian community. Other have said I should pick a Muslim to appeal to the Muslim community. Clearly, I cannot do both.
  1. Both sides of the debate have impressive reason and passionate arguments supporting their position. Both arguments are right in their own way. But neither is right in the way that Nigeria needs at the moment. As president, I hope to govern this nation toward uncommon progress. This will require innovation. It will require steps never before taken. It will also require decisions that are politically difficult and rare.
  1. If I am to be that type of President, I must begin by being that type of candidate. Let me make the bold and innovative decision not to win political points but to move the nation and our party’s campaign closer to the greatness that we were meant to achieve.
  1. Here is where politics ends, and true leadership must begin.
  1. Today, I announce my selection with pride because I have made it not based on religion or to please one community or the other. I made this choice because I believe this is the man who can help me bring the best governance to all Nigerians, period, regardless of their religious affiliation or considerations of ethnicity or region.
  1. May I say this to all of you, especially to those who will be disappointed in my selection based on religious considerations. I will not and cannot ignore the religious concerns and ethnic sensitivities of our people. Taking them into due consideration is an important part of good and able governance. But religion, ethnicity and region cannot always and fully determine our path. To forge ahead as a nation toward development and prosperity, we must break free of old binds. We must recalibrate our political calculations to where competence and fairness matter more than reductive demographics.
  1. This is why, today, I announce the selection of SENATOR KASHIM SHETTIMA as my partner and running mate in the mission to advance and reclaim the fortunes of this great country and the hopes of its people.
  1. Senator Kasim Shettima’s career in politics and beyond shows that he is eminently qualified not only to deliver that all important electoral victory, but, also, step into the shoes of the Vice President. As a man with the talent, maturity, strength of character, and patriotism he has my implicit confidence and faith.
  1. I am aware that many will continue focus on a particular detail, the question of his faith.
  1. However, if we truly understand the challenges upon us a nation, then we must also see the imperative of placing competence in governance above religious sentiment.
  2. In 1993, Nigerians embrace Chief MKO Abiola and a fellow Muslim running mate, Baba Gana Kingibe in one of our fairest elections ever held.
  1. The spirit of 1993 is upon us again in 2023.
  1. As such, the ticket we present today represents a milestone in our political history. It symbolizes our party’s determination to be a leading light among political parties in Africa.
  1. The democratic process and the decorum that characterised our presidential primaries and the selection of our vice presidential candidate exemplifies why we are the party of the people and of the betterment of their future. With this selection the All Progressives Congress surely shall continue to be the party that shows the way and carries this nation towards its best future. I implore you all to join with me on this journey to a brighter future.
