Atiku Lied, Never Visited Me, Says Wike

Atiku in Rivers to See Wike

By Uche Mbah

Rivers Governor Nyesom Wike has accused the Peoples Democratic Party Presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, of insincerity and peddling lies about his position in the party.

Wike who spoke at the Port Harcourt International Airport, particularly took exception to Atiku’s statement in an Arise interview on July 22, 2022.

“(Atiku) appeared before Arise Television, see the statements he made. So many lies were told”, Wike said, referring to Atiku’s statement that he chose who he can work with amicably, thereby insinuating he cannot work with Wike.

Atiku: “Governor Wike was not rejected. Nobody was rejected in the party. But you must understand that it’s the prerogative of the candidate to pick his running mate — a running mate he believes he can work with amicably, and then also deliver the policies of the party, and also try to unify the country,” Atiku had said at the interview.

Wike also debunked the news that Atiku visited him for discussions recently, widely reported on social media.

“What happened to investigative Journalism?”, he queried , saying that all he has been receiving were phone calls urging him to work with Atiku.

“Atiku has been to my house before. Does he not know the way to my house again ?”, he queried, saying that at the right time he will reply to all “their lies”.

But Atiku had praised Wike in the controversial interview, calling him a courageous and brilliant politician “who has a future in Nigerian politics.”

“Governor Wike is a brilliant politician. He’s courageous, tenacious, I believe he has a future in the political evolution of this country. It’s not a question of rejection. Certainly, not. I think it’s too harsh a word to say that we rejected governor Wike. Certainly not.”

2023: UK Warns, Doubts Election Will Hold

Election Ballot Boxes in Nigeria

By Akinwale Kasali

The current state of unprecedented insecurity in Nigeria has become worrisome, prompting the Government of the United Kingdom, UK, to express skepticism on the possibility of the 2023 General Election taking place.

The UK Government warned that the 2023 General elections may not hold in Nigeria if the current spate of violence and insecurity continue.

Making this submission is the Director, Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office in the United Kingdom, Chris Beecroft, during the launch of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum Peace and Inclusive Security Initiative (PISI) in Abuja, the nation’s Capital.

Beecroft identified active insurgency in the North East; farmers-herders conflicts which are extending across the country, resource conflicts in the Niger Delta, the tension in the South-East and banditry in the North West as some of the major challenges.

Proffering a solution, the UK envoy said the solution to this anomalies is for all stakeholders to work together, and that the military and the police need to be strengthened.

He added that addressing the insecurity challenges of the nation does not only lie in strengthening the Military and the Police, but through reconciliation, mediation, arbitration, and access to justice as well.

“We are at a critical juncture in Nigeria’s journey, and now is an important moment for new thinking and action to build a more peaceful future for all Nigerians.

“The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office value our relationship with the Nigeria Governors Forum, NGF, and have supported the NGF through our programs, including SPARC, PERL and most recently the Technical Assistance provided in framing the Peace and Inclusive Security initiative, PISI.

“Nigeria faces significant peace and security challenges. There is an active insurgency in the North East; farmer-herder conflicts are extending across the country; resource conflicts in the Delta; tension in the South-East; and banditry in the North West. The rise in conflict risks destabilizing Nigeria’s democracy in the run-up to the 2023 elections.

“Conflict destroys lives, destroys livelihoods, destroys hope and ambition for the future. Conflict represents an existential threat to Nigeria’s unity and its development.

‘’The police and army are in urgent need of reform, but the solution to Nigeria’s instability does not lie in simply strengthening the police and army-but rather in building an effective social contract, building federal, state, local and community level infrastructure to manage conflict; and in giving young people jobs and opportunities so they have a stake in a prosperous and peaceful Nigeria.

‘’Injustice and impunity, weak Justice institutions, the proliferation of small arms and weapons, the weaponization of social media, are all drivers of conflict and instability. But with the right commitment, dedication, and support, there are solutions.

“The UK Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office, FCDO, recognizes the important role NGF plays in setting the peace and security agenda, building state-level and community level structures and institutions to reduce violence and respond to conflict and insecurity across Nigeria.

“The FCDO is keen to continue its collaboration with and support for the government of Nigeria in its efforts to deal with the mounting insecurity. The UK is pleased to have been able to support this initiative and is committed to continuing working with the Nigeria Governors Forum, NGF, in advancing its peace and security agenda.

“The UK is engaged in supporting Nigeria to reduce violent conflict in a number of areas; we promote a regional response in the North East and Lake Chad Basin through our contribution to the Regional Stabilisation Facility, RSF, and delivery of programs on peacebuilding, humanitarian assistance, protection of civilians, human development, good governance, and accountability.

‘’All our programming, whether focused on health, education, economic growth, or governance, works to reduce the risk of violent conflict and support peace-building infrastructure”, Beecroft stressed.

Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC has congratulated Rev. Daniel Okoh, on his election as President, Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN.

Okoh was elected on Monday to succeed Samson Olasupo Ayokunle, as the head of the Christians body in the country.

Congratulating the new can leader, Tinubu who has been criticized by not a few Nigerians for picking a muslim as his running mate in the 2023 presidential election said in a statement that Okoh is worthy to lead the umbrella body of Christians across the country.

The statement titled, ‘Tinubu congratulates Daniel Okoh, new CAN President’ said; “Asíwájú Tinubu noted that the new CAN leader who is the General Superintendent of Christ Holy Church is a worthy successor to Rev. Ayokunle whose tenure as CAN president was one characterized by exceptional commitment, principle and wisdom.

“I congratulate Rev. Okoh on his election as the new president of CAN. Noting that Rev. Okoh had truly distinguished himself as the deputy to Rev. Ayokunle.”

The APC National Leader urge the CAN president to join other Nigerians in forging religious harmony in the country, that will lead to national unity and cohesion.

He said, “CAN is one of the most important organizations in the nation. Not only does it seek the betterment of the Christian community in Nigeria, its moral force and standing benefit all Nigerians as we seek to establish a just and compassionate society where people of all faiths and beliefs live and work together in peace and harmony.

“As a nation, we are in a critical moment where misguided and terrible actors attempt to destroy social harmony and reign violence on us all. These awful forces seek to stoke religious and ethnic divisions in hope of pitting Nigerian brother against Nigerian brother.

“Decent and good Nigerians of all faiths must ally again such designs. While we may not agree on everything, all well-meaning Nigerians agree that we must live in peace, must respect and honor our diversity and eschew violence and hatred.

“We are grateful that CAN as an organization embodies these and other principles that reflect the values and virtues of Christ. We are glad that the new President of CAN, Rev.

“Okoh, is a humane and kind soul who has dedicated his life to the betterment of his fellow man and is a person who will work with leaders of other faiths and beliefs to anneal the bonds of unity, inter-religious understanding and tolerance while advocating for the benefits of democratic good governance for all Nigerians regardless of creed or belief systems.

“As long as we stand forthright and adhere to these tenets, Nigeria will defeat the plans of those who seek to place discord and hatred at our door. As Rev. Okoh assumes the mantle of leadership, it is my hope and prayer that his tenure brightens every corner of our country and may he be a shining light to all.”

Meanwhile, the CAN president said on Thursday that the APC Muslim-Muslim ticket is aimed at undermining Nigerian Christians.

Ebonyi: Umahi Worsens Retirees Woes, Stops Pension Payment

0

Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State has stopped the payment of pensions to retired civil servants in the state. The governor cited fraud in the state wage bill.

Those close to the government however informed the magazine that the decision may not be unconnected with the challenges of paucity of funds facing the state as a result of recent shortfall from the federal allocations to stat e governments. Many state governments are owing retired civil servants arrears of pensions.

Affected in the new regime, are permanent secretaries, directors, Deputy Directors Assistant Directors among others who have left the service of the state.

The governor made this known while addressing journalists shortly after the executive council meeting that took place at the New Government House, Abakaliki, the state capital.

Speaking through the Commissioner of Information and State Orientation, Uchenna Orji, the governor lamented the continued increase in the wage bills of the state.

Orji said “EXCO received a memo on the re-validation and re-verification of Pensioners in Ebonyi State due to a continuous increase in wage bills. The office of the Head of Service had made discoveries of payments made to deceased pensioners in the State and this is one of the reasons for this verification exercise.

“EXCO approved the re-validation of all pensioners in the state beginning with the retired Permanent Secretaries and Directors in the State.

“EXCO also further approved that payment of pensions to these pensioners be suspended until the end of the exercise which will not exceed twenty (20) working days after which payments to all cleared retirees will be reinstated.”

The state helmsman, has now ordered the immediate re-validation and re-verification of pensioners in Ebonyi State.

Meanwhile, those familiar with the economic situation in the country informed the magazine that the problem of shortage of funds is not unrelated to the reduction of allocations from the federal government to the 36 state governments in the country in recent months.

If the situation persists, the analysts say, many states will not be able to pay salaries of workers still in their employment, nor former government workers who have left public employment.

The problem of owing pensioners their entitlements is a timeworn problems in the country, but has worsened lately due to the shortage in revenue accruing to the federal government caused by the shortfall in crude oil revenue.

The Nigerian Army on Friday, announced the redeployment and appointment of new General Commanders, Corp Commanders, Commandants of training institutions, Brigade Commanders, and Commanding Officers amongst others.

The development, security watchers informed the magazine has become necessary following the sporadic attacks on officers and military formations across the country.

President Muhammadu Buhari had on Thursday met with Service Chiefs to chart a way forward on the worsening security situation in the country. The meeting with top military brass comes on the back of last week’s terrorist attack on Presidential Guards Brigade, killing some soldiers and others seriously injured.

The insecurity situation has been aggravated after NSDC released a report that the terrorists are planning to attack major cities across the country, including Abuja and Lagos.

Last month, the terrorists attacked Kuje Prison freeing over 400 inmates including some boko haram commanders detained there.

Again, on Thursday, suspected terrorists attacked a military checkpoint at Zuma Rock, around the Niger-Abuja border.

According to a statement signed by the Director of Army Public Relations, Defence Headquarters, Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, the new postings are aimed to tackle the problems of insecurity facing the country.

Meanwhile, defense analysts informed the magazine that the Airforce and Navy will soon follow suit with the Army by redeploying top commanders and appointing new ones, in line with the Buhari’s administration plan to reposition the military for the next phase of war against terrorism and banditry.

The analysts, however, insist that what is needed at the moment to defeat terrorism is coordination among the military; Army, Airforce, Navy including the Nigerian Police Force, NPF.

CBN: Emefiele Blames NNPC For Naira’s Fall

0
Godwin Emefiele

The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN has told Nigerians to hold the NNPC responsible for the free fall of naira, the nation’s legal tender.

The national currency has continued to lose its value against other major international currencies such as the dollars and British Pound Sterling. The currency experienced its most embarrassing fall within two weeks after it lost over N60 to the dollar at the unofficial foreign exchange market. It has fallen further at the beginning of the week, exchanging for N710 to the American greenback as the US Dollars is widely known, with fears that the end to the currency’s free fall not in sight.

Vexed by the development, the Nigerian Senate has summoned the CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele to appear before it on the way forward for the floundering naira.

The CBN, however, does not want to take the blame, rather it has passed the buck to the NNPC, saying the non-remittance of dollars to foreign reserves by the government owned oil firm led to the falling exchange rate.

The CBN took the position in a report it released on Thursday, claiming that NNPC which is responsible for the nation’s forex exchange earnings has failed to remit funds, which would have beefed up the country’s foreign reserve.

The NNPC has stopped remitting funds into the federation account since February this year, saying much of its forex earnings from crude oil has been used to pay fuel subsidy.

In the CBN report titled: “The forex question in Nigeria: Fact sheet”, the apex bank disclosed that there has been zero-dollar remittance to the country’s foreign reserve by the NNPC.

The report states: “As noted by the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, monetary policy alone cannot bear all the burden of the expected adjustments needed to manage these difficulties. It’s our collective duty as Nigerians to shore up the value of the naira.”

According to the apex bank, Nigeria earns foreign exchange from four sources – proceeds from oil exports; proceeds from non-oil exports; diaspora remittances, and Foreign Direct/Portfolio Investments (capital flows).

Recall that the Senate Public Accounts Committee, had in March queried the NNPC over the non-remittance of N4 trillion revenue generated in five years into the Federation Account.

“It was observed from the examination of NNPC report to the Technical Sub-Committee of Federation Account Allocation Committee meeting held in December 2016 that a cumulative total of N4 trillion was unremitted to the Federation Account by NNPC as at 31st December 2016,” the committee said in a report during its probe of NNPC.

AIG Warns Police Against Another EndSARS

Usman Baba Alkali - IGP

Adeleke Adeyinka, an Assistant Inspector General of Police has warned that the nation may not survive another nationwide protest. The top police officer, particularly, warned the officers and men of the Force that “another EndSARS may lead to the end of the police.”

The warning comes on the back of two days solidarity protest by the Nigerian Labour Congress, NCL and its affiliates over federal government’s failure to resolve the prolonged strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU. The Universities teachers have abandoned the nation’s ivory towers since February this year over unpaid entitlements and benefits.

On October 20, 2020 tens of thousands of young Nigerians took to the streets to protest against police brutality after a video went viral of a man allegedly being killed by the notorious Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, sparking what became known as the #EndSars demonstrations.

Many police officers were killed, and several police stations burnt during the few days that the protest lasted.

The deployment of the military to the Lekki Tollgate, Lagos the epicenter of the protest later led to the allege killings of some protesters. The federal government has however denied the allegation that protesters were killed. The federal government later banned the notorious SARS in line with public demand.

Speaking to men of the Ogun state Police Command on Thursday, Adeyinka who is in charge of Zone 2 (Lagos and Ogun States), said the country is not likely to survive another round of such protest, warning policemen to be civil when dealing with protesters.

He said: “The criminals that perpetrated that act that time are going to come out more experienced. The mistakes they made then, they are not going to make them now and that is why your conduct towards the members of the public must be effective.”

“If you (police officer) are a cultist I don’t think you should show it to people because it is wrong and do you know why it is wrong even if you are not wicked, if you belong to a cult group there is no way you are not going to favour a member of your cult, unless you are not a good cult member.

“A situation where a police officer is a member of a cult group and people in the society know that he is a cultist, his activities are related to cultism, I think it is sad.

“There are some of our policemen too now that are into cybercrime, popularly known as yahoo yahoo, especially policemen who find themselves in places where we have institutions of higher learning, it is very common. You (commissioner) need to fish them out and you need to preach to them,” Adeleke said.

Governor Umahi Attacks Princess Agom-Eze Over Senatorial Ticket

Princess Ann Agom-Eze and Dave Umahi

By Charles Igbo

Ebonyi State Governor, Engr. Dave Umahi, has descended on Princess Ann Agom-Eze.

Umahi and Agom-Eze are engaged in a fierce battle over the rightful candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, for the Ebonyi South Senatorial District in 2023.

The Senatorial Primary was held while Governor Umahi was a Presidential aspirant. That Primary was won by the Governor’s younger brother, Austin Umahi after the other aspirants were, allegedly, asked to “cooperate.”

But it turned out he was a stand-in for the Governor who staged a come-back for the ticket after he lost out at the Presidential Primary.

The junior Umahi withdrew from the Senatorial race, and the State Chapter of the Party conducted a second Primary expectedly won by the Governor. But it is an election that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, from the onset, declared illegal. The Commission said it stood by the first Primary.

Trouble started when INEC skipped Governor Umahi’s name from the list of Senatorial candidates it published. To compel INEC to publish his name, Umahi went to the Federal High Court Abakiliki. Agom-Eze, a participant in the first Primary recognised by INEC decided to join in the suit.

A few days ago, the Presiding Judge, the Honourable Justice Riman, gave a judgement that both Umahi and his brother stood disqualified. In Governor Umahi’s case, the Judge said that by virtue of Section 115 of the new Electoral Act, Umahi, having participated in the Presidential Primary, stands disqualified and risks a two year jail term for participating in two different Primaries same year, same General elections.

In disqualifying his younger brother, the Judge said he had earlier withdrawn from the race. He, therefore, gave the ticket to Agom-Eze.

But another twist came up.

A letter signed by Agom-Eze to the National Chairman of the APC, where she announced her voluntary withdrawal from the Senatorial race emerged.

The opinion in the Umahi camp is that she, too, stands disqualified since, like Umahi jnr.,  she withdrew from the race.

But Agom-Eze is holding tenaciously to the ticket, and   the case is on appeal.

However, Governor Umahi is not relenting. He calls Agom-Eze’s claim to the ticket fraudulent. He is confident the ticket will finally be his, Section 115 of the Electoral Act or not.

In a Press release signed by his Special Adviser Media and Publicity, Chooks Oko, Umahi takes an umbrage on Agom-Eze, and explains why her claim is fraudulent. A date for a new Primary is set for July 31, 2022. Governor Umahi is participating, and says he is sure of picking the ticket.

Following, the full text of the statement titled:

Mrs Ann Agom Eze is at it again

“The attention of Ebonyi State Governor has once again been drawn to the bizarre antics of Mrs Ann Agom Eze in her quest to keep deceiving the public and gain unmerited sympathy in a bogus attempt to fly the APC flag as the candidate for Ebonyi South Senatorial zone.

“While the society was still grappling with her perjury tantrums to a revered court of law, she is again employing primitive tactics and resorting to crude self help in a bid to clinch a mandate she has no claim to, anyhow.

“In a most provocative and highly contemptuous letter addressed to the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court Abuja, Mrs Agom Eze went hallucinating about an imaginary court procedure and how it will end raising disparaging insinuations against the Governor in the process.

“The Governor would have ignored the letter and its puerile contents but for the fact that silence is thought to mean consent in our society.

“The general public is enjoined to disregard these deliberate concoctions and misleading rants from a woman who had sought to represent a people, got rejected, but is now bent on showing them the rough edges they would have gotten from her.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Governor Umahi is ready for the Ebonyi South Senatorial APC rerun elections set for Sunday, 31st July, 2022 where he hopes to receive the nod of his party to stand in the 2023 elections as their candidate in that Senatorial zone.

“The general public, and the judiciary in particular, are enjoined to disregard and totally ignore the veiled blackmail and an attempt to be a senatorial candidate by hook or crook instead of through known standards.”

Lawan Sends  Senators  On A Long Recess Over Impeachment Threat Against Buhari, Defection Of APC Senators

0
PDP Senators Walk out

By Uche Mbah

Facts are gradually  emerging on why Senate President,  Ahmed Lawan, suddenly, sent Senators on a long vacation.

After a riotous session earlier this week, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, caucus walked out in protest against the leadership of the Senate.

This was as the Senate President shot down a motion to  debate  the security crisis rocking the nation raised by the Senate Minority Leader, Senator Philip Aduda, on the ground that he was not privately consulted before the matter was brought to  Plenary.

The Senators walked out chanting solidarity songs of “Buhari must go”. They met a barricaded door.

But the under-the-table dealings, The Source Magazine was informed, why Lawan acted fast to send Senators on a long recess are two fold. One was to avert the service to  President Muhammadu Buhari,  an impeachment notice. The other bothered on letters of defection to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, allegedly, submitted by twelve All Progressives Congress, APC, Senators notifying the President of their intentions to defect.

It was gathered that many of them, who are of Northern extraction, have decided to dump the APC.

If all defected to the PDP,  the Party  will now have a majority of 53 Senators, while the APC will be reduced to 50. This, automatically, means that Lawan would loses his seat as Senate President since his party would no longer be in the majority .

“So the best gamble is to sit on their defection letter”, says a National Assembly source.

If this happens, the impeachment of Buhari will sail through seamlessly.

The Presidency has, however, dismissed the impeachment threats, describing the Senators as jokers.

Insecurity: NSA Seeks Nigerians’ Cooperation To Defeat Terrorism

0

The National Security Adviser, NSA Maj. Gen Babagana Mongonu (rtd) has solicited the cooperation of Nigerians in the fight against insecurity.

The NSA said security forces alone cannot confront the challenges alone, saying the federal government is on top of the issue.

Mongonu spoke after the National Security Council,NSC meeting President Muhammadu Buhari had with all the service chiefs and other top government officials.

The meeting, the third within a month comes on the heel of spate of attacks by terrorists across the country, the latest being the killing in Abuja, of some soldiers in the Presidential Guards Brigade, which drew serious outbursts from not a few Nigerians.

Speaking after the meeting with President Buhari on Wednesday, the NSA said the government is determined to fight insecurity with the help of Nigerians.

The war against terrorism cannot be won except people volunteer information to security agencies.

“The council deems it necessary to inform the general public, that fighting this type of asymmetric conflict is a collective effort. It’s not something that should be confined to only the security, intelligence, and law enforcement agencies. When we keep saying whole of society approach, whole of government approach; to get a whole of nation approach, what it means is that everybody has to partake in this enterprise,” Mongunu said.

He explained further that, “The truth is that no country can ever overcome the difficulties of an asymmetric conflict by virtue of the fact that the enemy of the state is embedded within the population within the wider society.

“It is true that the local people are averse, they’re scared, they’re worried and there’s no confidence. That is understandable. But without their support, the cooperation in terms of giving information, it makes it very hard for the operational elements.

“We are in a very difficult situation. And Council understands. Mr. President understands people’s concerns about the growing insecurity. But I can assure you that there’s no straight cut and dried method of dealing with this thing unless all of us embrace each other.

“I know people are weary, people are tired, people are beginning to gravitate to other places for self-help. The truth is that help is rooted in everyone working for the other person.”

Meanwhile, the Defence headquarters has disclosed that security agencies have neutralized 30 out of the terrorists who carried out the attack on the Guard Brigade.

Maj.-Gen. Bernard Onyeuko, director, Defence, Media operations while speaking in Abuja on Thursday, said the onslaught against the terrorists was conducted by troops of 7 Guards Battalion and 167 Special Forces Battalion in conjunction with the air component of “Operation Whirl Punch”
