Babachir Lawal and Wike

By Adesina Soyooye

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, on Saturday, July 30, 2022, played host to a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, and a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara.

Both men, chieftains of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, visited Wike at his private residence in Port Harcourt.

Their surprise visit to Wike comes 24 hours after both men delivered stinging addresses at the first ever APC Northern Christian Leaders Summit in Abuja, held on Friday.

In their separate addresses, both Lawal and Dogara, in strong language, criticised their Party’s Muslim-Muslim ticket for the Presidential election in 2023. Lawal said that the APC would bear the consequences as Christians would fight with prayers and their PVCs.

Even though no statement has been released on their visit and closed door meeting with Wike, both men told Reporters they came on a brotherly visit for the good and unity of the country.

APC Muslim-Muslim Ticket Deliberate To Spite, Exclude Christians – Ex- SGF,  Babachir Lawal; Cites Other Examples

By Adesina Soyooye

“Christians and, indeed, most enlightened Nigerians are at a loss as to why people that intend to govern a country with our kind of diversity would choose this path to power. This is very divisive and must be rejected by all patriotic Nigerians.

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and a former Secretary to  the Government of the Federation, SGF, Babachir Lawal, has said that the Muslim-Muslim Presidential ticket of the Party is a deliberate act meant to not only spite Christians but exclude them from all cadres of leadership in Nigeria

Lawal made this assertion at the APC Northern Christian Leaders Summit held in Abuja on Fridauy, July 29, 2022.

Regretting that the APC has brought about a situation where the 2023 General elections will be all about religion, the former SGF, said the ticket is a continuation of the brazen exclusion of Christians in the North even in the appointment of Vice Chancellors, Rectors and Provosts in tertiary institutions in the North. He reeled out the appointments with data.

He, also, revealed that the deliberate exclusion of Northern Christians from the scheme of things extended to,  even  the composition of the membership of the APC National Working Committee, NWC, and National Executive Council, NEC, where there are no Christians. He accused the APC of promoting an anti-Christian agenda.

Lawal: “Proof of its anti-Christian agenda is that our Party itself has completely eliminated Northern Christians from its National Working Committee (NWC) and National Executive Council (NEC). All our protestations as Party members have been completely ignored by the Party Leadership.”

He said as Northern Christians, “We see the ticket as an assent to the current and continuing educational economic and political marginalisation of the Northern Nigrian Christians.”

He disclosed that the agenda of the Muslim-Muslim is just unfolding but said that Christians would resist it adding that: “The PVC and prayers will be our weapon of choice and we will mercifully deploy them in 2023.”

Following excerpts from Lawal’s address:

“We will not give up until we get Justice. I have heard friends and colleagues within and even outside the APC express some shock and even disbelieve over our reaction to the APC’s Muslim-Muslim ticket in the 2023 general elections.

“Our opposition has some historical basis. There were times in the past when Christians produced the Deputy Governors in Kebbi, Niger and Kaduna States.

“Now it is wholly Muslim-Muslim tickets. It is worth noting that all these are happening in APC-controlled states. They are threatening to do likewise in Gombe, Kogi and Adamawa States.

“It is also now a recurring practice in the North, whereby any Christian Traditional Rulers that dies is replaced with a Muslim Prince albeit from the ruling family even if the most qualified and preferred Prince is a Christian. The recent case of Billiri Chiefdom in Gombe State is still fresh in our minds.

“Proof of its anti-Christian agenda is that our party itself has completely eliminated northern Christians from its National Working Committee (NWC) and National Executive Council (NEC). All our protestations as party members have been completely ignored by the party leadership. But as members of the APC, we have the right to continue to express our indignation at these happenings and will not give up until we secure the justice that is due us.

“The main purpose of this historical narrative is to let you know that for the APC, a Muslim-Muslim ticket has been a long-term political strategy and not a one-off decision. Thus, all these talk of competence as the reason for the choice of the Muslim VP is balderdash and diversionary. This is a calculated anti-Christian exclusion agenda that is being implemented.

“One might ask: why is the APC itself mute about our rejection of this Muslim-Muslim ticket? And why has none of the other perpetrators of this crisis reached out to Christians for a dialogue? Why are they instead hiring fake Bishops and take Church groups to further embarrass the Church? Why are they embarking on a vicious media war against CAN and the Church instead of seeking reconciliation? Truly, things are not adding up.

“So why are Northern Nigerian Christians in particular against the Muslim-Muslim ticket? I will try to enumerate just a few more reasons in addition to the ones I have already enumerated above.

“We see this ticket as an assent to the current and continuing educational, economic and political marginalisation of the Northern Nigerian Christians.

*“Federal Universities Vice Chancellors 28. Muslims 23, Christians 5.

*“State Universities Vice Chancellors 22. Muslims 17, Christians 5.

*“Federal Polytechnics Rectors 21. Muslims 18, Christians 3.

*“State Polytechnics Rectors 20. Muslims 16, Christians 4.

*”Federal Colleges of Education Provosts 23. Muslims 22 Christian 1.

*“State Colleges of Education Provosts 31. Muslims 24, Christians 7.

“Of course, it goes without saying that employment to all other positions from the Registrar down to the cleaner in these institutions will be replicated in a similar manner.

“This scenario is what we find in all agencies of Governments in the North. Therefore, we view this Muslim-Muslim ticket as an extension of this practice of exclusion to the uppermost level of Government.

“Christians all over the country see this Muslim-Muslim ticket as a deliberate and premeditated attempt to introduce and firmly entrench Religion into the politics of this country. This, of course, will lead to further disharmony in the hitherto fragile coexistence of the Nigerian society, disrupt peace and hamper both social and economic development of the country.

“Christians, and indeed most enlightened Nigerians are at a loss as to why people that intend to govern a country with our kind of diversity would choose this path to power. This is very divisive and must be rejected by all patriotic Nigerians.

“Implied in this ticket is the insinuation that northern Muslims are not willing to vote for a ticket that has a Christian on it and on which they are not represented. It is our belief that Northern Muslims would have seen the Justice in a Muslim-Christian ticket and would have given it their overwhelming support had the party been inclined to do so.

“A corollary to this mindset is that Christians should also not vote for a ticket in which they are not accommodated. Unfortunately, this is the message we get loud and clear from this Muslim-Muslim ticket. This is truly a wake up call for all Nigerian Christians. We didn’t start this religious politics, APC and its candidates did; so all of us should take note and act as appropriate.

“So our dear APC colleagues, spare us these sanctimonious lectures on “competence” and the cliche “religion of the candidates do not matter.” The truth is that the 2023 Presidential election will be all about religion, and sadly, you started it; religion does matter in this context, so be ready for the consequences.

“It is important to reiterate that we, Nigerian Christians, want to live in peace and harmony with all practitioners of other Religions. We want to enjoy social and economic developments like other parts of the world, but without peace, justice and religious harmony, this is not possible.

“On our part, we neither seek to oppress nor dominate any one or any Religion. But we will also resist any one trying to discriminate against us and our Religion. We were not the ones that started this fight. The APC started it and must be ready to carry the cross it has created. Blaming Christians and heaping insults on CAN will take them nowhere.

“For, how do they expect Christians to keep silent when a Northern state Governor publicly states that they pressured Tinubu to get a Northern Muslim VP because they did not believe him to be a good Muslim? Is the VP going to be the National Deputy Imam? How do they expect us to keep silent when another Northern State Governor goes to Osun State and urges them to vote for someone just because he is a Muslim? Was he there for election campaign or “dawah”? What can be a better example of religion in politics than demonstrated by these governors?

“Clearly, there is an agenda to politically, religiously, and economically suppress and oppress the Northern Christian. But we are up to the task. We will protect ourselves. The PVC and our prayers will be our weapons of choice and we will massively deploy them in 2023.

“But while we are ready to battle this politics of exclusion and oppression, we are open to discussions with any one who wants to engage with us in good faith.

“As I always do, I want to end with this quotation from Romans 8:31: “What then shall we say in response to these things.

“If God is for us who can be against us?”

“May God bless and reward all our collective efforts at seeking to live in peace with one another in Nigeria, our blessed country.”

We Are On Course”, Gov Akeredolu Replies Critics Of Health Policy

Rotimi Akeredolu
Governor Rotimi Akeredolu

By Ayodele Oni

Ondo State Governor, Mr Rotimi Akeredolu has told critics of his administration’s health policy that everything is on course to revamp the sector.

A statement by Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Richard Olatunde on Saturday explained that majority of existing health facilities in the state were in state of disrepair at the inception of the administration.

The government statement reads “When this administration came on board in 2017, the maternal and child care services at the two Mother and Child hospitals in Akure and Ondo town were already suspended on account of backlog of debts already incurred on consumables, most significantly on drugs.

“Imbued with inexorable determination and commitment to develop the state health sector and revive the dying Mother and Child hospitals, Governor Akeredolu expanded the special health facilities to the other two senatorial districts in the state since the two earlier established by the previous administration were concentrated in the Central Senatorial District.

“On the 6th of February, 2018, Governor Akeredolu signed into Law the  bill establishing the Ondo State Contributory Health Commission (ODCHC) and the Ondo State Contributory Health Scheme (ODCHS). The ODCHC has a five bespoke health insurance products for all strata of the teeming population of Ondo state under the ODCHS cover, including the Abiyamo Maternal & Child Health Insurance Scheme (AMCHIS).

“The Abiyamo Maternal & Child Health Insurance Scheme (AMCHIS) is a State Equity Scheme for two sets of Vulnerables – Pregnant women and Under-5 children. This program is fully funded by the State Government.

“Governor Akeredolu launched this scheme on the 3rd of December, 2019. Since the inception of the scheme, it has made provision of maternal and child care free and sustainable. It gives access to Antenatal care, delivery (including Caesarean section), post-natal care for the mother (up to 6 weeks after delivery), neonatal care (first 30 days of baby’s life) and treatment of common illnesses in children till they attain the age of five years. Beneficiaries do not pay for services.

“The pre-qualification criterion to enjoy this scheme is the Kaadi Igbeayo (Ondo State Residency Card), which is issued to residents of Ondo State by the State Information Technology Agency (SITA). Governor Akeredolu has also ensured that the card is issued at NO COST to pregnant women willing to become AMCHIS beneficiaries.

“It should also be known that the premium for AMCHIS is solely paid by the Ondo State Government and there is a state budgetary line yearly to this effect. Till date, AMCHIS has recorded over 22,500 beneficiaries (pregnant women and children below five years of age).

“There are seven AMCHIS providers spread across the three Senatorial Districts of the state namely: Mother & Child Hospital, Akure (Central Senatorial district); UNIMEDTH (Laje, Ondo & Akure complexes) – (Central Senatorial district);  General Hospital, Owo (Northern Senatorial district); State Specialist Hospital, Ikare-Akoko (Northern Senatorial district); General Hospital, Ore (Southern Senatorial district); State Specialist Hospital, Okitipupa (Southern Senatorial district); and General Hospital, Igbokoda (Southern Senatorial district).

“Since this scheme was launched on the 3rd of December, 2019, a total number of 24,678 including Pregnant Women and Children under 5 have benefited till date. At the Mother and Child Hospital, Akure alone, over 4,842 total number of Pregnant Women have accessed Ante-Natal Care till date with 3,432 total deliveries.

“Aside service delivery, the Akeredolu administration has also embarked on Structural Expansion at the Mother and Child hospital in Akure with the construction of General Out-patients Department (GOPD) which is near completion.

“As part of his determination to provide first-class health facilities for the people of the state, Governor Akeredolu took another giant leap with the ongoing construction of a modern world-class 250-bed University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital complexes in Akure and Ondo town respectively. This is aside the regular provision of medical equipment at the teaching hospital and Mother and Child hospitals.

“Since the inception of his administration till date, Governor Akeredolu has recruited over 425 health workers including Consultants, Nursing officers, Staff Nurses/Midwives, Medial doctors, Pharmacists, Radiographers among others.

“The State Primary Healthcare Development Agency has equally recruited 804 health personnel. The UNIMEDTH wasn’t left out. Over 400 medical personnel have so far been recruited. At the Mother and Child hospital in Akure, there are 434 health workers presently working at the facility.

“The puerile submission that majority of medical doctors in the state have tendered their resignation letters due to a supposed hardship from the Akeredolu’s government is not only wicked but laughable.

“Brain drain of nurses and doctors is a national calamity occasioned by the massive recruitment of health workers by developed countries whose health sectors have depleted in personnel due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Doctors and nurses in Nigeria are daily applying for jobs abroad, obviously in search of greener pasture, especially with the rising exchange rate.”

Ebonyi Senatorial Seat: “We Don’t Want Umahi”, Say Protesters To National Chairman

By Adesina Soyooye

Hundreds of protesters from the All Progressives Congress, APC, Ebonyi State, on Friday, grounded activities at the National Headquarters of the Party in Abuja.

They went to protest what they saw as a brazen injustice against one of them, Princess Ann Agom-Eze. They allege that the State Governor, Dave Umahi, inexplicably, want to take away the Senatorial ticket, already won by Agom-Eze. They warned the National Chairman of the Party of the consequences of such a move and told him to intervene in the Ebonyi South Senatorial seat crisis, and do the right thing.

In the petition  to the APC National Working Committee (NWC), they  expressed disappointment over the what has now become the contentious Ebonyi South Senatorial zone ticket and warned

APC leadership of the danger inherent in taking  sides with Governor Umahi.

Their petition, which traced the genesis of the crisis reads in part:

“We the concerned members of APC Ebonyi South Senatorial zone hereby protest the attempt geared towards the emergence of Governor David Umahi as the Senatorial candidate for the Ebonyi South Senatorial Districts negating the electoral process that is the Electoral Act INEC guidelines and the internal APC constitution as a party.

“Agom-Eze is an old APC member who has laboured for the party. She bought her first party Senatorial nomination form in 2018, stood for primary, but did not win, ahead of the 2019 general elections. She has been very faithful, helpful to all matters as it concerns APC as a party.

“In 2022, Agom-Eze followed all the party’s guidelines in purchasing the expression of interest and nomination forms for the Ebonyi South Senatorial zone. She was screened and remained eligible for the Ebonyi South Senatorial primary election. She contested and came second to Austin Umahi Nweze, the placeholder (the immediate young brother to the governor).

“Upon withdrawing from the race, he was immediately rewarded with a federal government appointment as the Executive Secretary to Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission, and we are all aware that the Governor had asked him to withdraw from the Senatorial race to enable him to represent our zone since he did not win the APC presidential primary election.

We from Ebonyi South Senatorial zone cry for a more competent and quality representation and a woman participating actively in politics today. Chairman, in your magnanimity, you gave women free nominations to help bridge the gap in women representation at the National Assembly.

“You encouraged the women, notwithstanding the difficult terrain of our politics. Agom-Eze was able to navigate effectively in this period.

“Perhaps, should the situation in Ebonyi South Senatorial zone be allowed to stand, it will definitely cause a high level of disaffection within the party and the electorate within the Ebonyi South Senatorial Districts of the state.

PVC Registration: INEC Debunks Claim Its Officers Were Arrested; Says It’s False

By Akinwale Kasali

Contrary to reports that three Staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, were arrested by Police for creating Illegal Registration Unit inside the Church Hall of St. Bridget Catholic Church, Ijeshatedo, Lagos and their arrest confirmed by the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, the Lagos State INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner, Olusegun Agbaje has debunked the report.

Agbaje said it was false and a figment of the imagination of rumour peddlers to discredit the INEC on the Voters Registration Exercise taking place in the 20 Local Government Areas and other designated areas in the State.

Making this clarification Saturday, 30th July, 2022, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, Agbaje said: “All my staff and machines are complete. No member of INEC staff was arrested anywhere in Lagos on Friday.”

INEC had, on Friday, debunked reported invasion of the same CVR centre by thugs who allegedly carted away its enrolment machines.

There is a huge surge in most voter enrolment centres in the State ahead of the July 31 CVR deadline.

Governor Hope Uzodimma on Friday recorded another feat in his administration as the Assets Management Company of Nigeria (AMCON) returned to Imo State Government the Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) of Standard Shoe Company Limited, Owerri which it seized from past administrations as a result of a N1.6 billion indebtedness.

Consequently, according to a Press Release signed by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, the Government of Imo State, under Governor Uzodimma has been authorised to resume ownership of the Standard Shoe Company Limited, Owerri having cleared the N1.6 billion debt/obligation that preceded AMCON’s receivership of the once popular shoe firm.

At a brief ceremony in the Abuja office of AMCON on Friday, the Executive Director, Mr. Eberechukwu Uneze said the return of the C of O to Governor Uzodimma was an indication that the assets and liabilities of the Standard Shoe Company Limited have been returned to the State.

He acknowledged the liquidation of the N1.6 billion indebtedness by Governor Uzodimma and appreciated him for his commitment and efforts towards  recovering the company.

Earlier, the Governor thanked the Management of AMCON for believing in his ability to put the Standard Shoe Company Limited on the path of productivity once again, noting that its recovery and revival will take thousands of Imo youths out of the street and also help to deal with the issues around insecurity.

Governor Uzodimma recalled the several negotiations between his Government and AMCON that culminated in the payment of what Imo State was said to be owing and the final hand over of the Standard Shoe Company Limited, noting that his 3-R mantra of rehabilitation, reconstruction and recovery are real and in the interest of the people.

PVC Registration: Police Nab Three INEC Officials For  Creating Illegal Registration Unit In Church

0

By Akinwale Kasali

The Lagos State Police Public Relation Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin has confirmed the arrest of three Officers of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, who allegedly conspired with the Parish Priest of St. Bridget Catholic Church, Ijeshatedo, Lagos, to create an illegal Permanent Voters  Card Registration Unit in the Church auditorium for members.

The said INEC Officers who carried out the illegal act include; Ikechukwu Izuchukwu, Rita and Agbokhna Ebigun.

They were apprehended by the Police following a complaint by the Chairman, Residents Association, Raji Azeem, about a ploy by the Church to disenfranchise some members of the public.

It was gathered that Azeem had complained to the Police that residents had waited to no avail at the INEC recognised registration centre only to discover that INEC officers have been camped at the Catholic Church hall attending to members of the Church.

He said, “The INEC registration officers, according to INEC provision, should be stationed at 9A, Imam Thanni, but this was not to be. We have been here awaiting their arrival but when we discovered that they were not forthcoming, we were worried.

“Only for us to discover that they have been camped at the St Bridget Catholic Church auditorium on the influence of the Parish Priest registering only members of the Church while we were in the queue waiting. It was a deliberate attempt to disenfranchise us.

“House 9A Imam Thanni Registration Centre has remained a constant polling unit since 1983. But the Priest decided to play the religious cards by inducing the Electoral Officers to register only his Church members.

“The Church members have been around since 5.00 am but we were unaware of their plan until we busted them in action and handed them over to the police at the Ijeshatedo Police.

“The arrested INEC officers have been crying and begging for their misdeeds, but they were granted bail by the IPO, Inspector Shola, so that they can continue with the registration.

“He instructed them to return after the exercise and that they should discontinue the exercise at the Church hall and move to the venue approved by INEC.”

The rumoured invasion of thugs at the venue and carting away PVC Machines and other INEC Materials was debunked and confirmed to be false by residents.

The  arrest of the INEC Officers, has, however, not been confirmed by the Lagos State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Olusegun Agbaje. But in a statement, he said that the viral video on the carting away of materials was false and targeted at causing chaos, fear and halting the Registration exercise that is scheduled to end on Sunday,  July  31st, 2022.

Agbaje added that INEC  does not use any religious or worship centers for the Registration Exercise. It, therefore, urged the Public to disregard the video and go about their registration process peacefully.

Men Too Are Target Of Human Traffickers – NAPTIP

Ibadin Judith-Chukwu

By Ayodele Oni

The News  has always been filled with reports of Human Traffickers exporting girls into foreign land for prostitution.

Some of the victims are usually attracted with a promise of getting well paid jobs abroad but end up becoming sex slaves.

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Traffcking in Persons, (NAPTIP) has just  revealed  that not only girls are victims as boys are now targets of these human traffickers.

The agency has, therefore, alerted Nigerians especially men and boys to be wary of those that cajole them with sweet job and education offers to take them abroad as some of them end up becoming sexual tools.

Commander of the Agency in Anambra state, Mrs Ibadin Judith-Chukwu, during an interraction  with newsmen  on this year’s World Day Against Human Trafficking, said human traffickers are now trafficking male victims to asian countries for sexual exploitation.

World Day Against Human Trafficking is a global commemoration marked on July 30th every year, to spotlight the destructive effects of trafficking in persons in the society, appreciate efforts of various government to stamp out the crime and highlight the plights of the victims, who are the sufferers of the crime.

The NAPTIP Commander noted that the crime is getting sophisticated with technological advancement.

“Men and boys from Anambra here are being trafficked to the Asian countries. They are kept in brothels and older women will come and take them home to satisfy their sexual desire after which they return them to the brothels. Unfortunately, the proceeds go to whoever runs the brothels.

“Remember, before they left Nigeria, they were promised jobs through travel agents. But when they get there, their passports would be seized and they become vulnerable.

“They drug their food and water so that they will be able to service as many women as possible. From information we’ve received, a lot of them died in the process.”

Commenting on this year’s theme – “use and abuse of technology”,

the NAPTIP Commander mentioned various ways human traffickers leverage on technology to advance their illicit businesses.

“They use technology to offer fake online jobs, profile the victims and advertise sex websites. They cajole girls into posting their pictures with which they are displayed as commodities for men to make choices.

“They use it to control and monitor their movement through GPS. They can also use technology to blackmail the victims too. They say, if you want to expose us, we expose your nude pictures or videos.”

Mrs Judith-Chukwu stressed the need for those campaigning against human trafficking to maximize the positive sides of technology, especially the social media, to undermine the operations and activities of the criminals.

“When you are investigating cases of human trafficking, you can use technology to track the locations of the suspects and victims.

“We can also extract open financial investigation through the accounts of the suspects making them to forfeit proceeds of the crime. We can use it to access their bank account details with all legal backing to ascertain financial flows and what they are meant for.

“We use various social media accounts such as whatsapp, facebooks, twitter and others. You can report cases of human trafficking via emails to us.”

She appealed to residents of Anambra and other Nigerians to be more careful as traffickers now employ new techniques enabled technology to trap unsuspecting persons.
