Atiku/Wike Crisis: Ayu Calls Wike’s Bluff; Meeting In Rough Start

0
Atiku Abubakar and Nyesom Wike

By Gideon Njoku

To remove the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, by Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, is not going to be as easy as it was for him to remove the immediate past Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus.

The reconciliatory meetings between Camp Atiku and Camp Wike – ongoing and planned – may have already hit the rocks over the fate of Ayu.

Internal Party wrangling has been the lot of the  PDP, since the victory of Atiku Abubakar over Nyesom Wike to emerge the Presidential candidate. It worsened when Atiku picked the Governor of Delta State, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa as his running mate instead of Wike who not only took the second place at the Presidential Primary, but was the preferred choice of a committee set up by Atiku and the Party to select  a running mate for Atiku.

Waving the flag of betrayal and injustice, Wike and his Camp have given the PDP a wide berth. Instead, Wike has been publicly romancing APC high profile members while ignoring all appeals to let go and allow peace to reign in the PDP.

With time running out, especially, as campaign would soon begin in full swing, a14-man Committee has been set up by both men to look into the crisis and sort out grey areas.

The Committee is in addition to the resolve of PDD Governors to wade into the crisis.

However, the efforts may have hit the rock already even before starting seriously.

It stems from the complete rejection of one of the alkeged requests placed on the table by the Wike Camp. According to reports, Wike had requested that the National Chairman of the Party, Dr Iyorchia Ayu, must step down from office. His request, it is said, is premised on equity and justice – that the Presidential candidate of the Party and the National Chairman should never come from sane region.

Atiku is from the Northern region, and so is Ayu.

Indeed, when Ayu was elected the Chairman, most people took it for granted that the Presidential candidate would come from the South. But the PDP reneged on the zoning arrangement and threw the ticket open.

Party sources insist Ayu had said he would step down from office if a Northern candidate emerged. But since the emergence of Atiku, Ayu has sat tight.

In a recent interview with Arise Television, Atiku had said Ayu would step down as soon as he, Atiku, wins the Presidential seat in 2023. Meaning: if he does not win, Ayu remains the Chairman.

On Monday, August 15, the Social Media was awash with the news that Ayu had stepped down from office to assuage the Wike Camp, and so, make way for peace.

The story said Ayu had handed his resignation letter to former Senate President, David Mark. But it turns out to be fake.

In a statement released same Monday, Ayu said: never. He said he did not resign, and will never resign.

He has not only reneged on his promise to quit in the event of the emergence of a Northern candidate, he has also faulted Atiku who promised Ayu would quit if he, Atiku, wins the Presidential seat in 2023.

Ayu is now talking of tenure. He is defending his tenure. In the statement, he let it be known that he was elected to office for a four-year tenure and would serve it out.

Not a few people had thought that the Party could consider Wike as the Chairman in the event of an Atiku victory. In fact, on Sunday, a PDP stalwart, Senator Okon,  had suggested Wike as the National Chairman in 2023.

With Ayu’s stand, hope is fast running out that an amicable solution would be arrived at in the next couple of days. The questions are:

Is Wike capable of holding the PDP to ransom? Will the Party cave in to his demands and pressurise on Ayu to give way? Will the party call his bluff? Can the party afford to lose Wike, one of its main financiers, and so, possibly lose Rivers State to another Party in the Presidential election? What will be Wike’s fate if the party calls his bluff as most people think could be the case if all appeals to him fail?

The consensus is that Wike is better off remaining in PDP as a tree does not make a forest.

Ex MEND Leader, Ajube Accuses Chairman, Reps Committee, NDDC Of Diverting Funds Meant For Coastal Areas

0
Bibopere Ajube

By Ayodele Oni

Ex Niger Delta Agitator and leader Bibopere Ajube has decried total neglect of the coastal area of Ondo state by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

Coastal area of Ondo state has four local governments of Irele, Okitipupa, Ese Odo and Ilaje, that qualifies Ondo to be part of NDDC.

Ajube said rather than concentrating on development of these areas, funds are being diverted to Akoko area of he state, which is out of mandate area of NDDC.

He accused the management of the NDDC and Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on NDDC, Bunmi Tunji Ojo who is an indigene of Akoko, of diverting amenities meant for the Ondo state mandate areas to please his people.

In a statement in Akure on Monday, Ajube described as disturbing, a situation whereby benefits that should acrue to the people of Ilaje and Ese-Odo local government areas are enjoyed by those in the northern senatorial district, especially Akoko.

Ajube, who was Commander of the Western fringe of the defunct Movement for the Emnacipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), emphasized the need for  stakeholders to work hand in hand and call the NDDC management and Reps member to order.

Ajube’s allegation came barely 24 hours after  Ojo was said to have given about 1,000 Akoko students the sum of N50m as scholarship even as the NDDC disclosed that it had approved the resumption of bursary payment to student in the oil rich region.

“We suspect that someone is trying to play on the intelligence of the good people of Ilaje and Ese-Odo that fall within the mandate areas of the NDDC. Over time, we have watched how benefits that should be extended to the people of the mandate areas are diverted to Akoko.

“Without any grudge against anyone, we are however amazed that this development has relegated our people to the background as they are now like beggars who have to prostrate to derive benefits.

“The most recent ugly development is the noise about the scholarship reportedly approved by Hon. Ojo to Akoko students.

“There is more to this because as the report came without any of our students from Ilaje and Ese-Odo, the NDDC came out to announce that it had approved the resumption of bursary payment. So who is fooling who, we ask?

“I therefore call on the NDDC management as well Hon. Ojo to reconsider their anti people stance against the good people of Ilaje/Ese-Odo by including them in their programmes rather than alienating the riverine areas of Ondo State.”

The NDDC had on Friday said it had resumed the suspended scholarship scheme as part of efforts to eradicate poverty in the Niger Delta region.

Mr Udengs Eradiri, Special Adviser on Youths to the Interim Administrator, NDDC, Dr Effiong Akwa, who announced the development, said that it was part of NDDC’s commemoration of the International Youth Day and ongoing Niger Delta Talent Hunt to discover and empower talented youths in the region.

But the Special Adviser Ojo, Babatunde Alao, described the allegation as spurious and unfounded lies, saying it was a personal empowerment programme to empower his people.

Alao recounted that the lawmaker’s scholarship initiatives are amongst numerous programmes sponsored by the BTO Foundation for the people of Akoko North East/North West Federal Constituency.

According to him, it was part of the recent empowerment programmes that was done recently to include free UTME forms and free medical/surgical outreach.

“How can the form for NDDC Scholarship be placed for download on BTO’s personal website?”

He explained further that Federal lawmakers only get constituency projects, adding that “Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo’s role as the Chairman, House Committee on NDDC is oversight, nothing more. “He does not execute projects.”

Dan Ulasi’s Many Lies About Peter Obi and The Reason Behind Them

0
Ulasi

By Val Obienyem

Chief V. Ulasi is a known name in Anambra State. I will not call any particular Ulasi, but “ogba oto awu ahu mara onwe ya”. As the Igbos would say, what is the Ulasi of our description known for? Is he a conservative, a liberal or a radical? Who is he and how do we give an appropriate estimate of him? Why Ulasi now?

We would have spoken about him years back, but out of respect for his age. We are doing so today on the Igbo understanding that a time comes when we speak to the king even if through a veil.

A few days ago, I was called on phone by a respected Abuja-based SAN to listen to Chief Ulasi. The SAN’s reaction could be interpreted thus: “Who knows who has given him money? Who knows what he is going to say?” This is a clear image of a man whose character cannot be predicted.

I have listened to Chief Ulasi speak during his appearances in the village square and I think I understand him very well. He can argue a point today and its opposite tomorrow, depending on how his palms have been clandestinely lubricated.

Indeed, Ulasi has the capacity to dress any person as a saint as well as a sinner.

One thing we cannot take away from Ulasi is his eloquence. Whenever one sees him speak in the village square, one observes him seated calmly, bubbling with vitality and wit even when he looks serious and a times quizzical. You will also observe something like languid and aristocratic air about him and in his speeches.

He can rouse one to hatred of any person he discusses by his flaming eloquence and believable mien. Have you seen him appear in the village square without discussing people? Not at all! He is usually procured for demolition work on persons! While on this undignified and unedifying assignment and questions are thrown at him, he would bare his ego with unusual abandon.

During the governorship election in Anambra State at which Mr. Peter Obi supported Mr. Oseloka Obaze, Ulasi was at his best propitiating the masters that procured him.

Valentine Obienyem
Val Obienyem

He usually does not have qualms using religion, politics, towns, to any purpose, including poisoning the minds of Anambra people and other Nigerians about Mr. Peter Obi. His indictment of Obi was sweeping and cruelly indiscriminate. I kept asking myself if he meant, from what he said, that Obi had no virtues at all to put in the scale against his vices. At such a time, one would be asking: “kedu mgbe osewelu?” (“When did this quarrel start?”) His criticisms always pass beyond reasonable and healthy dissent to disgraceful excesses of vituperation.

He is a clear case of abuse of God’s grace. Gifted with eloquence and courage he is using them negatively. Rather than use his eloquence to crusade for good governance, he has indeed become a purveyor of doom, often effusive, with maximum of lies and minimum of character.

Each time he finished speaking in the square, the followers of rival political parties that procured him, elevated the cacophony of his unobjective voice, as could have only come from an unspoiled barbarian, to the music of the spheres.

After all they did to kill Obi, they did not succeed, a task for which Anambra State Government, under Chief Willie Obiano, committed billions of Naira.

A good man is always a good man. Nigerians who have watched Obi over the years even when they disagreed with him, know that he remains one of the best politicians in Nigerian whenever politics is measured in the sense of being service to the people and to humanity.

Today, Nigerians, including you and I, are tired about the slip of the country. We are all united in our belief that it is about time we took back Nigeria. Unlucky for Ulasi, Obi has been identified, by an inexplicable irony of history, as better placed to lead the unfolding peaceful revolution.

I may not share the position of Charly Boy, but many Nigerians believe he captured it succinctly when he said that the election without Obi would have been presenting the choice of “Sniper” and “otapiapia” for Nigerians.

Prior to the primaries, Ulasi danced vigorously that we again suspected that somebody who paid him was actually calling the tunes. He dismissed Mr. Peter Obi flatly. He even went on to say that he was positioning himself to become the Vice-Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

It was a good judgement that Obi left the PDP when it became clear to him that dollars would become a deciding factor, because it attracts the elite as honey attracts bees.

In private, we discussed how the elite is part of the problems of this country. “Val,” he said, “Nigeria is bleeding and Nigerians know that, but rather than seek ways to get it right they are angling to make money during the primaries. I pity the common masses.

I know that they seriously desire to take back their country, but at the level of the primaries they are incapacitated.” Thank God everything has turned out the way it is now.

Immediately after the primaries and considering the heroic move of Obi, the love for him hit the roofs. For once, Nigerians have come face to face with a man of substance and a man with the requisite character to change the country.

As we watch him rising like some spectacular rocket capsule among the luminaries of his time, those who have vowed to remain perpetually against the rise of Nigeria are at it again. It is on this supposition that we should understand the recent appearance of Chief Ulasi in the village square.

Mindful of the capacity of Obi’s followership, he tried to soften his indictment with apparent expression of Obi’s qualification and suitability for the job.

Those words of mercy were themselves so shallow that they did not soften the blow from his usually rude fist.

As a way of dismissing Obi and the aspiration, I learnt he even joined another reckless fringe in suggesting that Obi should call South-East Governors and discuss his aspiration.

Would he tell us how other contestants from other region have called their own governors over the same issue? Obi’s movement is pan-Nigerian and it will be offensive for any move delineating it to a particular people – which is not the case.

As we were trying to understand him, one former governor from a neighbouring state, whom we all thought had been sobered by age and circumstance, spoke against Obi. We grant him the freedom to do so but we are shocked at the way and manner some Igbo politicians manifest themselves as repositories of political nonsense. What prompted that speech? What did the speech add to him? Could it be out of solidarity for a man who appropriated his state as much as himself before the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) “gbowaa ya aka, nara ya otutu ihe osutere na ohi?” (Arrested him and recovered many things he stole.)

Obi is a Nigerian phenomenon. He is known for having distinguished himself in administration and good governance. He houses the discipline and temperament our country needs today to start anew.

Atiku Must Sign Agreement With Wike To End PDP Crisis- Dele Momodu

0
Atiku Abubakar and Nyesom Wike

Media mogul and former Peoples Democratic Party, PDP presidential aspirant, Dele Momodu has charged the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar to enter an immediate agreement with Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state over the prolonged crisis in the party.

Momodu, Ovation magazine publisher spoke as the main opposition party struggles to resolve the fallout of the PDP presidential primaries which Atiku won by defeating Wike.

Since he lost the ticket, Governor Wike has made incendiary comments against his party, with many suggesting his imminent defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.

To add some effects to his ‘rebellion’ against his party, the Rivers helmsman has met with some APC stalwarts, including the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila who commissioned some projects in the oil-bearing state last week.

Wike’s action has continued to ruffle feathers in the party ahead of the make or mar presidential election, which the party said it’s poised to win.

But Momodu has now advised the party’s presidential candidate to have a one-on-one meeting with Wike, to settle the rift with winning next year’s election in mind.

The Ovation publisher who recently urged Wike to shield his sword and work with the party, said “the fear of Wike is the beginning of wisdom in PDP.”

Momodu spoke on Channels Television on Monday, said Wike will not leave the party, adding that the Rivers helmsman is only playing a mind game with the party.

He said “I believe he will not leave PDP. He is playing a mind game and he’s good at it. What shall he profit him if he joins APC?

“The situation in PDP shows what Wike is in the equation of things in Nigeria. If you have a man who is your best governor across the board, across party lines, Wike stands out as a fantastic performer.

“Today, the fear of Wike is the beginning of wisdom in PDP, there is no question about that. Wike is smart, he knows the game he’s playing, and what he wants to do is to force a deal with the party. That’s my own reading of the situation. He is a very smart politician. I’m sure eventually the party will reach an agreement with him.

“What I would advise Atiku Abubakar to do today is to sit down one-on-one without no other person present with governor Wike and agree on deliverables, If possible, sign an agreement.

“Governor Wike believes that the party should have respected the zoning principle, number two, he believes that zoning would have favored a southern candidate. Three, he believed that of all the southern aspirants, he is the one that has the capacity to deliver victory to the party. Then number four, I believe he thinks he should have been the one to make that presidential candidate.”

Benue Youth Group Dares Miyetti Allah Over Threat To Sue Gov Ortom

0

By Ayodele Oni

Benue State Youth Forum has described threat by a Fulani socio-cultural group,  Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore to drag Governor Samuel Ortom to International Criminal Court of Justice, ICCJ,  as a mere distraction.

The Group, during a press conference in Makurdi on Monday, said Miyeti Allah members have been responsible for the spate of killings and abductions in Benue state.

President, Benue Youth Forum,Terrence Kuanum, explained that Miyetti Allah National Secretary, Alhassan Saleh raised lame allegations that Governor Ortom seized 25,000 of their cows and arrested 400 of their members without any cause.

“Granted that Governor Ortom had while unveiling the Benue Community Volunteer Guards, BVCG) in Makurdi, said the government had secured the conviction of over 400 Fulani herders, who had besieged the state and had seized over 25,000 cows, we all know that it was done within the law.

“While we are not worried over the empty and baseless threats to drag the Governor the ICC, we are once again concerned that this group that has claimed responsibility for the massacre of Benue people and sacking of communities and creating a humanitarian crisis is reminding us that cows are more important than human lives.

“Even though the Miyetti Allah leadership further contradicted itself by saying in one breath that their members were not in Benue State, and claiming in another that they were being maltreated in the state.

“It is common knowledge that there is a law prohibiting open grazing in Benue state. When the Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law of the state was enacted in 2017, the leadership of Miyetti Allah addressed a press conference and threatened to resist the legislation violently.

“The group’s National President, Abdullahi Bodejo and National Secretary, Saleh Alhassan, said they were going to mobilize Fulani herders from across West Africa to invade Benue state and ensure that the law was not enforced.

“They said Benue land belonged to them. The bill, which was assented to by Governor Ortom in May, 2017, came into effect on the 1st of November, the same year.

“Immediately following the enforcement of the law, the herdsmen intensified attacks on Benue communities, killing hundreds of people, and displacing millions who are still in internally displaced persons, IDP camps.

“The height of it was the massacre of 73 people on the 31st of December, 2017 and 1st January, 2018 in Guma and Logo Local Government Areas of the state.

“Barely 48 hours after the mass burial of the 73 victims of the herdsmen attacks in Benue, the National Vice President of Miyetti Allah Cattle Herders Association, Husaini Yusuf Bosso, warned that more blood will be shed in the state if the law prohibiting open grazing introduced by Governor Ortom was not completely scrapped.

“There were also several threats by a group known as Fulani Nationality Movement, (FUNAM) to ensure that there was no peace in Benue unless the law banning open grazing was repealed.

“We are all aware that the same Fulani Nationality Movement claimed responsibility for the attempted assassination of Governor Ortom in March 2021 and several other threats on his life by the group and Miyetti Allah.

“That they have resolved to make Benue a killing field as long as the people do not surrender their land for them to occupy is nothing new, except that little or nothing has been done by the Federal Government to tame them, despite repeated calls by Governor Ortom.

“The Ortom administration has persistently told the herdsmen that they are free to acquire land and establish ranches if they wanted to rear cattle in Benue, but they keep insisting that the land belongs to them and there were cattle routes in Benue hence they must keep grazing openly.

“These killer-herdsmen, who bear sophisticated weapons and carry out nefarious activities, are bent on continually destroying lives and property in our communities and there seems to be little concern from the federal government to call them to order.

“Even as we speak, the group that has been identified as one of the most dangerous terrorist organizations in the world is still unleashing terror on the people and has never stopped even for a moment.

“They are creating a huge humanitarian crisis in the state after killing over 5,000 people, destroying property worth billions of naira and displacing about two million people from their ancestral lands.

“Funnily enough, these same people who have the blood of innocent women, children and the elderly on their hands are the ones crying blue murder now.

“But one thing is certain; whichever way we look at the situation, these characters value the lives of animals more than human life.”

Meanwhile,  Governor Ortom has told them he will meet them at the ICCJ.

Osun Holds LG Election October 15

Contrary to its earlier stand that local government election will not be held before the exit of the present administration in Osun state, the exercise has been fixed for 15, October, 2022.

The People’s Democratic Party, (PDP) had said local government poll being contemplated by the outgoing administration of All Progressive Congress, (APC) will be an exercise in futility.

APC lost July election to the opposition PDP and the terminal exit for the incumbent administration is November 15.

Chairman of the Osun Independent Electoral Commission, (OSIEC) disclosed  at a press conference on Monday in Osogbo that the commission is fully prepared to conduct the council poll.

OSIEC Chairman, Olusegun Oladuntan  stated that the commission is already holding consultations with leadership of political parties on the exercise.

Oladuntan said the Commission is now operating on the new and assented State of Osun electoral act 2022 which was passed by the State Assembly.

Chimaroke Nnamani: Battling With Ingrained Prejudice Over Peter Obi

0
Amanze Obi

By Amanze Obi

Chimaroke Nnamani’s unwarranted chastisement of Peter Obi’s army of social media supporters has, finally, led him into an avoidable error. It has led him into a wild goose chase. That is what his recent essay on Bola Tinubu amounts to.

I had thought that Nnamani, as an elder, would manage his temper. But I was utterly wrong. The man does not have a tame temperament. That was why he flew off the handle over an issue he should have shrugged off.

The impression the former governor has left many with is that he has, before now, been battling with ingrained prejudices over Peter Obi. Were it not so, the choices and preferences of some young folks would not have given him such goose pimples.

Recently, Nnamani, for whatever reason, lashed out at the social media movement of Peter Obi, describing its promoters as dictators with no home training. Nnamani also derided the Peter Obi presidential bid as a bandwagon, and vowed that he would ensure that it does not take place in Enugu State.

By his pronouncements, Nnamani had fished in troubled waters. And he got a raw deal from Obi’s social media goons. They were as acerbic as Nnamani. They paid him back in the language of the street, which he deployed in his criticism.

Chimaroke Nnamani
Chimaroke Nnamani

Many have expressed disappointment with Nnamani over this. The overriding feeling is that his altercation with the Obidients was below him. He descended to the level of guttersnipe with young men and women that he ought not to have joined issues with in the first place. By so doing, Nnamani degraded himself, to the disappointment of his admirers.

But it does appear that Nnamani is still smarting from the mental bruises inflicted on him by the Obidient movement. He is not satisfied that he showed no respect for Obi by being childishly resentful of his presidential bid, regardless of his misgivings with the style and approach of Obi’s teeming supporters. He finally betrayed his private conviction when he set out to write an essay on Bola Tinubu.

It would not have mattered if the essay was well tailored. But this one had neither rhyme nor rhythm. It was staccato in every material particular. In fact, if you put aside Nnamani’s pedantic narrative on sick but successful United States Presidents and its possible applicability to Nigeria, you can hardly see any other purpose that his laborious essay on Tinubu serves.

So, why did Nnamani choose to write an essay on Tinubu, his co-governor, some 15 years after they left office? Nnamani was not clear on this. He left his intent in the realm of speculation. This makes the piece read like an apologia or a piece of hagiography designed to serve a political purpose.

I have said elsewhere that Nnamani’s intent in that article is shrouded in suspicion. I had wondered why he had to wait until this time to eulogize Tinubu. My contention was that Nnamani was working hard to establish a fertile ground for an anti-Obi campaign by pretending to hold Tinubu, one of Obi’s rivals in the 2023 presidential election, in high esteem. It is a well oiled sleight of hand aimed at leading the unwary by the nose.

But Nnamani made a poor job of his outing. He promoted issues that ought not to come up in the essay at all. The padding was too banal not to be noticed. Here, we saw an Nnamani delve into Southern Governors Conference of 2000 and 2001. Whereas Tinubu hosted the first in Lagos in October 2000, Nnamani played host to the second in January, 2001. But what purpose did the conferences serve? Nothing.

Tinubu initiated the conference at the time he did as a protective weapon against the Olusegun Obasanjo presidency. Obasanjo and Tinubu were yet to part ways at that time. It must be noted that the idea of the conference ended up as mere talk shop because it was not properly conceived. That was why it came to an abrupt end after the second meeting. It was a stillborn child; a red flag that flew over Southern Nigeria without a sense of direction. It is surprising that Nnamani saw this as worthy of mention.

Perhaps to tell the Obidients that he is as qualified, if not more qualified than their principal, to seek the office of President, Nnamani began to enumerate Enugu’s firsts and innovations in governance under his administration. In the frenzy to sing his own praises, he held that he and Tinubu pioneered the establishment of development areas in Nigeria. Did Nnamani mean this?

No, he couldn’t be serious. Anybody who has a scant knowledge of the early stories of this Fourth Republic will know that the first state to create development areas was Ebonyi State, under the leadership of Dr. Sam Egwu. Lagos was to join after states like Bayelsa tried their hands at it. It will be recalled that the Obasanjo presidency rejected the development areas because they were made to assume the status of Local Government Areas. It was after this was modified that the monthly revenue allocation to Ebonyi State, which Obasanjo ordered to be withheld on account of this, was released. That of Lagos lasted for several months before it was resolved because Tinubu was not initially disposed to any form of compromise.

Enugu State under Nnamani was not in the picture in all this.

After all the rigmarole, Nnamani ended up holding Tinubu as the most successful governor in modern Nigeria. He also described Tinubu as the hardest-working politico of our generation. By painting Tinubu in these brilliant colours, Nnamani was putting him ahead among the top three contenders for the presidential seat.

Nnamani’s intent was to spite Obi and his teeming supporters. But his effort fell flat on the face. I doubt if he has, through this claim, converted anyone to his side.

But Nnamani missed it most when Atiku Abubakar is brought into the picture. How can Nnamani present Tinubu as his poster boy and at the same time be pledging loyalty to Atiku? This is a contradiction in terms.

Nnamani is simply being clever by half. He wants to lead Nigerians, particularly his PDP political family, by the nose. But I doubt if anybody is taken in by his antics. The fact is that Nnamani has made his choice in Tinubu. His pledge of loyalty and allegiance to Atiku and PDP is merely pretentious. The PDP needs to watch this Tinubu maniac closely.

Tinubu Is Buhari’s ‘Third Term’ Says PDP Group

0
Tinubu and Buhari

A group, Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP Action 2023 says the government of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu if he wins in next year’s presidential election, will be an extension of Buhari’s presidency.

The APC candidate is in what many has described as a three horse presidential race between Tinubu, Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, presidential candidates of the PDP and Labour Party, respectively.

Not a few insist that President Muhammadu Buhari has failed in many of his electoral promises, particularly on economic and security fronts.

The PDP group said Nigerians will face more hardship if Tinubu becomes president in 2023, saying “Tinubu is Buhari and Buhari is Tinubu.”

Buhari recently said he is tired and ready to go back home to Daura, when his tenure expires in 2023, following trenchant remarks from many Nigerians who said he has failed as commander in chief.

As an insider in the APC government, not a few Nigerians insist that Tinubu must share in the blame for being instrumental in Buhari’s rise to power, and his woeful performance as president.

The former Lagos State Governor and APC National Leader had while announcing his readiness to succeed Buhari earlier this year, told the president that “my ambition is not blind to the extent that I will step on his toes. I just want to step into his shoes and not on his toes.”

Tinubu said last week that he will continue where Buhari stopped if he becomes president in 2023.

Festus Keyamo, the APC candidate campaign spokesman, said last week that “There are areas where PMB’s Govt has done exceedingly well: infrastructure, rail, agriculture, etc. Our @officialABAT will continue with those revolutionary strides, but also seek to improve on them.

‘FG working assiduously to secure release of kidnapped Abuja-Kaduna train victims’

“There are areas of security challenges that have improved significantly, e.g. farmers-herders clashes, North-East insurgency, etc; @officialABAT will review these situations & employ additional strategies to maintain the momentum & consolidate the gains achieved in these areas”.

“As for new areas of security challenges, e.g. banditry and kidnappings in the N/West, @officialABAT is prepared to employ additional tools and tactics to complement the present work in progress in order to totally eradicate them if Nigerians graciously give him their mandate”.

Speaking in a statement Rufus Omeire, the group chairman said Nigeria faces an existential threat if Tinubu succeeds Buhari as president, saying his presidency will be a continuation of the Buhari’s administration.

The statement reads: “The APC presidential ticket for 2023 general elections is an attempt to give President Muhammadu Buhari a third term in office.

“Recently, a former APC chairman and ex-Edo State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, sought to distance Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu, the APC presidential candidate, from the disastrous government of the incumbent president, General Muhammadu Buhari. This is most disingenuous for many reasons.

“In the first place, by the provisions of the constitution of Nigeria, it is a political party that sponsors a candidate for the presidential election. In this case, the ruling APC is sponsoring Tinubu.

“Secondly, for practical reasons, it is the name of the political party that will be on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ballot paper during elections and so, APC will be on the ballot, not even Tinubu.

“Thirdly, Tinubu is the acknowledged and recognised National Leader of the APC, a position he shares with President Buhari. Indeed, by Tinubu’s own admission, he was largely instrumental in foisting President Buhari on Nigeria.

“He has given crucial support to the APC government of President Buhari and repeatedly publicly praised the policies and direction of the APC government. He is the philosopher king of APC’s misrule in Nigeria.

“Fourthly, during the APC primaries, he was massively endorsed by the party to continue from where Buhari will stop. The word in the APC is continuity. The fulcrum of the APC campaign has been a firm promise to replicate the sterling performance of the APC government of Buhari, if Tinubu happens to win in 2023.

“Make no mistake about it, a Tinubu presidency would be just another term for Buhari. Note that Tinubu and Buhari have the same divisive streak, the same arrogance, and contempt for peoples’ views and feelings,” the group said.

2023: Ortom Tells Obi To Approach Atiku, Tinubu; Ask Them To Step Down For Him

0

By Akinwale Kasali

Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State has given Labour Party, LP, Presidential Candidate, Peter Obi, a ray of hope and something to cheer about as the 2023 Presidential Election draws closer.

Ortom applauded Obi for possessing the  qualities to pilot the affairs of the country in 2023.

The former Anambra Governor, Ortom said, has all  it takes to be Nigeria’s President.

In the words of Ortom, “I have always said we must look beyond politics and work towards having a joint working relationship to ensure  we rescue Nigeria and rebuild it. And I think Peter Obi’s credentials are very clear and everybody knows.

“I appreciate him and he knows I am a very big stakeholder in the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and he finds time to visit me. He has been going around and this is commendable and I appreciate him.

“And like I always say, John 3:27 says that ‘A Man can receive nothing except it is given to him from above.’

“So, if God decides it is him, nobody can stop him. If God decides it is somebody else nobody can stop him.

“So this is a veery welcome development and I believe if he reaches out to other Presidential Candidates in other political parties such as the PDP, APC and NNPP,

I believe he should be able to reach out to them, sit and talk to them and analyze the Nigeria situation and see if he can convince them to step down for him because there is provision for that, and if  he does that, it can work.

“Let us always put Nigeria first. That is what is most important and I think, so far, I commend his effort and I welcome him and appreciate him for his visit.”

CBN’s Forex Sale Reason For Declining Foreign Reserves

0

The continued decline in Nigeria’s foreign reserves, FR is due to an increase in dollar sales by the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN. Nigeria’s forex reserves stood at less than $40 billion in June this year.

External reserves are assets held on reserve by CBN in foreign currencies and these reserves are used to back liabilities and influence monetary policy.

According to figures obtained from the CBN the reserves have been on a steady decline since the beginning of the year.

Data the magazine obtained from the CBN data revealed that external reserves in January dropped by $481.4million or 1.19per cent to $40.04billion, while in February, they declined by $121.4million or 0.30 percent to $39.86billion.

In March the reserves were down by $317.8 million or 0.79 percent to $39.55 billion and in April, the external reserves gained $41.5million or 0.1 percent to $39.58 billion from $39.54 billion it commenced the month under review. They went down by $943.07million to $38.48billion, the highest decline in 2022 in May.

Consequently, they appreciated by $674.4million or 1.75 percent to close at $39.16billion in June 2022.

The Bismark Rewane-led Financial Derivatives Company Limited, FDC has now claimed in a report that the steady decline in the reserves may not be unconnected with spikes in its sales by CBN.

Recall that the CBN increased its dollar sales to commercial banks in the country in July last year, after it stopped selling the American currency to Bureau de Change, BDCs. The apex bank had accused BDCs operators of fueling money laundering and terrorism.

The Godwin-Emefiele-led government bank said it increased dollar sales to banks by 200 percent.

“While the CBN banned the BDCs, it has increased dollar sales to banks. At the last bid conducted, the CBN allotted to every bank more than it used to allot to them so that they can meet increased demand.

“So the flow that is supposed to go to the BDCs has been allotted to banks. I can tell you that some banks that used to collect $1.3 million, gave them $4 million,” the banker told BusinessDay said.

The FDC said in its Bi-Monthly Economic Bulletin, “The depletion on the reserves was majorly due to CBN’s supply of foreign exchange to stabilise the currency.

“The external reserves is expected to continue its downward trend as the CBN intensifies its efforts to stabilise the currency by supplying foreign exchange to the I & E (Investors and Exporters) window.

“Because of the country’s low oil production levels, high oil prices may have less of an impact on the country’s external reserves.

“A constant depletion of the external reserves is likely to discourage the CBN from supplying foreign exchange in the foreign exchange market. This could further stoke currency depreciation as demand outpaces supply.”
