Opinion: Is Peter Obi’s Movement The Beacon Of Hope?

0
Peter Obi

By Olisa Enebeli Imegwu

Heavenly Father, as I put these words down in letters, gives me the boldness to state the concerns and fears of my people not minding the pains and the sacrifice I may endure, although I am an Ambassador in Chains. Amen!

In 1914, when the North and South were amalgamated as Nigeria by the British, until 1963 when our founding fathers bequeathed to us a legal framework of governance based on Regional Autonomy, Fundamental Human Rights and the creation of the Midwestern Region, Nigeria was coasting to greatness. Looking back to July 27, 2014, when Prophet TB Joshua prophesied its greatness, though with a Caveat. That since nothing good comes without passing through some crisis, we will overcome, while the perpetrators, the Principalities/Rulers of the earth, will not survive the triumph. Today, rather than be triumphant over the crisis of division and distrust, reverse is the case.

Beginning from 1966 to 1979, and then to 2022 APC/PDP National Conventions, the march to Nationhood has been a tale full of woes. It occasionally comes with spots of Hope, disappointments, patience and perseverance. What is the hindrance? Our problem is traced to the suspicion and mistrust of the Ibos harboured by some sections of South-west and Northern Nigeria, mostly occupied by the majority tribes of the Yoruba and Hausa/Fulanis. The relationship has degenerated to jealousy and resentment of the Ibo, a condition as old as Nigeria. If it has reached a point where they cannot live together with the Ibo, is there any need seeking their allegiance in a country where they are unwanted and unloved?

The condition has become so bad that a minor misunderstanding with an individual of Ibo descent or of a matter national in scope, the Ibo’ civil and business interests are threatened or destroyed in these regions. The unguarded and condescending utterances and arrogance of few of these political leaders, and the constant isolated acts of victimization against the Ibo in these regions, are evident. These acts against the Ibo by some Northern leaders such as Rabiu Kwankwaso, Alhaji Galadima, Jubril Abdulmumini et c in published interviews and video conversation between Alhaji Kashim Shettima and ex-Governor Amosun of Ogun state, if substantiated, are undesirable. If Shettima denies the video interview, he is yet to deny the allegations by President Jonathan that he appeared to have stood in the way of the fight against Boko Haram when he was the Governor of Borno State. derogatory remarks that the Ibo should concentrate on trading and business and leave politics to the North and South-west, their mastery of it, and demanding that Ibo convert to Islam, as allegedly stated by Jubril, to have a chance to become the president of Nigeria, is provocative to say the least.

Second, and very worrisome, is the recent specific act of victimization of the Ibo during the INEC Voters Registration where in some parts of the South-west and the North, the Ibo were prevented from being registered. One of such incidents, for example, allegedly happened on the 29th of July, 2022, at Saint Bridget Catholic Church, Ijesha, Surulere, Lagos State. It was reported on a video that went viral on one the social media platforms by Dr. Ambassador Princess Okojie Igbemudia. It was alleged that some unknown persons forced their way into the Church during the Voters Registration exercise and made away with the registration machines preventing prospective voters from registration and aborted already registered voters from collecting their PVCs. If the Ibo are so resented, they deserve the right under the circumstance to seek comfort, safety and participation in other ways, including seeking the Right to Self-determination/peaceful separation/divorce.

With the mindset of a critical section of the country, as described above, particularly a dominant one for that matter, flowery concepts or notion of a united and indivisible Nigeria, may not morally and politically be sustainable. Such concepts are convenient metaphors used by these bad leaders, the agent provocateurs, to perpetuate themselves in power. They are not there to elevate a moral value nor advance the cause of Justice, Fairness and Equity, as is enshrined in the nation’s constitution as well as their parties’ Constitutions. The leadership of the major political parties, APC and PDP, is no more, no less, a conspiracy to seize power. Beware of TB Joshua’s prophecy of 27th July, 2014 and what bad end it portends for the political class, the Principalities and the Rulers of the earth.

Because these leaders are not going to relent from their angst against the Ibo, the Ibo’s culture of receptiveness to change, individualism, competitiveness and entrepreneurship, is, either, not going to give way. As was the case between 1914 and 1966 post Independent Nigeria, this culture will continue to thrive. It, of course, gives the Ibo unquestioned edge over their counterparts/competitors in the South-west and North for advancement in modern Nigeria. The resentment and distrust of the Ibo could not have come at the time because the leaders then, our founding fathers’ overriding concern and interest, were determined to elevate the cause of Justice, Fairness and Equity.

It was their sensitivity to these core values that was responsible for the assuaging of the cry, then, of the oppressed and marginalized minority groups as is now the case against the majority Ibo. The report of the Willink’s Commission of Inquiry, Regional Autonomy, Fundamental Human Rights and the Creation of the Midwestern Region, were codified and formed the major planks of the 1954, 1960, 1963 and Lyttleton Constitutions, were products of their patriotism and statecraft.

Today, as was the case between 1914 and 1963, the cry by Nigerians for a Constitutional framework of True/Fiscal Federalism, Balance of States Creation across the regions, State Police, Power Shift/Rotational Justice/Equity in the distribution of major elective and appointive political offices, have fallen on the deaf ears of our political Leaders, particularly Neo-Northern Political Warlords and their Co-conspirators in the Southern part of the country. For their selfish and inordinate ambition, Justice, Fairness, Equity, which they all embraced and swore to in the Nation’s Constitution as well as in their parties’ Constitutions, no longer mattered. These leaders, for the sake of posterity and love for our race, should disprove Trump’s description of Africans as shitholes, hence rendering the self-fulfilling prophecy toga inapplicable. If not cast away, it is an epitaph that our founding fathers would be made to grieve uncontrollably in their graves.

The resort, therefore, to the defence of Justification to promote the rejection of our core democratic values of Justice, Fairness, Equity, as enshrined in Sections 13, 14 and 15 of the nation’s constitution, the grundnorm, should be discouraged. Unlike what was obtained between 1914 and 1963, attention to the cry of Nigerians for Rotational Justice/Equity, the balance of States Creation across the regions, True Federalism/Regional Autonomy, State Police, Financial Autonomy for the State Legislatures and the Judiciary, a true Independent Electoral Commission, both at the State and Federal Levels, a part-time Unicameral legislature et c, should be accorded the urgency it demands. If between 1914 and 1963, at the primitive stage of our march to Nationhood, our founding fathers acceded to our yearnings, what is the hindrance today to these demands, at least, of Rotational Presidency, Balance of creation of States across the regions and True Federalism.

Failure for a peaceful and democratic negotiation to address the issues raised above, gives currency and bite to Bishop Hassan Kukah’s and Chief Dele Momodu’s lamentations. Bishop Kukah lamented thus, “…I have never been unsure of Nigeria’s future as I am now… it is time to end Nigeria so that the people who want development can go ahead… “as was the case with skilful handling of the separations of USA from UK, 1776; Belgium from Netherlands, 1830; Singapore from Malaysia, 1965; East Timor from Indonesia, 2002; Ireland from UK, 1921; and Eritrea from Ethiopia; South Sudan from Sudan; and pUSSR broken into Russia and several countries. These countries since their separations have lived and developed peacefully with one another.

Momodu, on his part, admonishes Nigerian Voters thus, “…to no longer sell their votes for money “… and dent their conscience… exorcise the demons of democracy and rid ourselves of the manacles and shackles of the depressive state and oppressive nature…” lorded over us “…by the much vaunted…” occult “…demi-gods and political warlords, particularly in the North, and of course, their Co-conspirators in the Southern Region. However, appealing to the conscience of the few willing, patriotic noble statesmen in the North and South, the torch bearers and the KEEPERS OF FAITH of our founding fathers. Although overwhelmed with the obscene wealth and coercive powers of the Occultic-Demi-Gods-Political Warlords, the Principalities/Rulers of the earth, rise and accept the challenge to rescue Nigeria.

History shows that the developed and advanced democratic nations of the world, whether in Europe, Asia and America, did not get there by the defence of Justification. Drawing from their history and backgrounds, they put down in written forms legal frameworks embodying their values, beliefs, principles and adhering to them. The reverse is the case with the Nigerian political Warlords, at every election circle, with the defence of Justification, they reject the core values of Justice, Fairness and Equity, written down in the Nation’s Constitution, the grundnorm, and which their parties’ incorporated in their constitutions. Beware of TB Joshua’s 2014 prophecy, particularly the certain end that awaits you.

The upcoming 2023 election is going to be a test case. An experiment that will show whether those riding the moral high ground in the North and in the South, would be overcome by the obscene and coercive forces of the Political Warlords, the Principalities/Rulers of the earth, described above. Except that the PDP/APC get their acts together, the Peter Obi’s movement may be a credible challenge, a Beacon of Hope that may test our partisan loyalty in either of 2 major parties. Can the few capable, well-to-do, noble, patriotic, Statesmen of the North and the South, if any, the torch bearers of our founding fathers, coalesce around it to give it the impetus it requires to succeed? Are these noble leaders going to be persuaded not merely on the basis of sentiments alone, but on Justice, Equity and his record of achievements while in office. Only Time will Tell if Chinua Achebe’s book titled, “There Was A Country” is true and time to negotiate a democratic peaceful separation for those who want to leave.

Export, Trade, Agriculture, Necessary To Grow Economy, Pull Nigerians Out Of Poverty –  Peter Obi

0
Peter Obi

Labour Party (LP), Presidential candidate and former Anambra state governor, Mr. Peter Obi has identified boost in export and commitment to agriculture as actions needed to grow the Nigerian economy and pull the citizens out of poverty.

Obi made the observations, during his fact finding and interactive visit to Executive Council of the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines, and Agriculture (NACCIMA), in Lagos, on Tuesday.

He added that growing the economy and getting the people out of poverty, will go a long way in addressing the high level of insecurity in the country.  Insecurity, according to him, can only be addressed by pulling people out of poverty.

He maintained that with vast arable lands in the country covering over 923,000 square kilometers, agriculture remains huge asset and the easiest way for Nigeria to feed its citizens and have surplus for export.

He stated that time has come for the country to move from consumption to production, arguing that this cannot be actualised without export.

Governor Obi, noted that with the volume of Nigeria’s export trade estimated at about paltry 30bn dollars in 2021(using rate of =N=650/$1) much needs to be done to address the situation for the country to be in strong competition with others. He stressed that exports need to be increased for Nigeria to boost its foreign reserves and halt the high exchange rate of the national currency, the naira.

He lamented the high cost of doing business in the country, pledging that if elected into office, his administration would create a conducive atmosphere for businesses to thrive. In this direction, he identified the private sector especially MSME, as Nigeria’s engine of growth, adding that for meaningful progress to be recorded, the economy must be driven by the private sector, and huge support to MSME. Shifting from the public sector and encouraging the private sector, he said, is the will also greatly help in curbing the scourge of corruption in the system.

Obi decried the incidence of crude oil theft in the country, describing it as an unfortunate, which needs all necessary actions to be controlled.

On the 2023 general election, Obi pleaded with Nigerians to look beyond the issues of religion, ethnicity or depth of the pocket but go for candidates who have the character, capacity competence and commitment, He said; I am not contesting, because I am Igbo, Hausa, Yoruba, Christian or Muslim but because I have the competence to turn around Nigeria for the better.

Fani-Kayode Makes U-turn, Says No Plan To Islamise Nigeria

0
President Buhari and Fani Kayode

In the light of the controversy that has trailed the All Progressives Congress, APC Muslim/Muslim presidential ticket Femi Fani-Kayode has disclosed that the party will not Islamise  the country if it wins the presidency next year.

The APC has been widely criticized for choosing Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Kassim Shetima as its presidential candidate and vice presidential candidates, respectively, citing the multi-religious nature of the country.

People of the same faith have never ruled the country under a democratic government since 1999, so the decision of the ruling party to forge ahead with its Muslim/Muslim joint presidential ticket despite serious protests across the country has shocked not a few Nigerians who feared that the country could be destabilized as a result.

Speaking on the issue, Fani-Kayode said God has told him that the party will not Islamise the country if it sweeps to power next year.

He said he believes in the capacity of Tinubu and Shetima to rule, rather than their respective faith.

He explained that he longer holds the view of  Islamisation or Fulanisation of the country after joining the party because he now sees things from a different perspective.

“Since I joined APC, I realised that, like I said earlier, things have completely changed. A situation whereby in this country today we have, no less than 20 Christian governors. The whole of the south-west has Christian governors, except for Osun state, which has now changed because we have a Christian governor who is coming in.

“A situation like that tells you clearly that the country cannot be Islamised and neither is our party APC interested in that. What is happening as far as I’m concerned is this, we have reformed and moving forward,” he stated.

God has informed him that Tinubu has no plan to Islamise the country, he said.

According to him, “Same faith ticket was a challenge but we looked into it. I prayed about it, I consulted, I spoke to Kashim because all along my position has been – it all depends who the vice-president is.

“It is not about the faith. It is about the individual and if the individual is a Muslim that I can live with, I’m prepared to live with that. I spoke to this man and Tinubu.

“The candidate himself returned schools to the missionaries in Lagos something that had not been done before. The candidate gave land to so many of these mega churches in Lagos when he was governor and since that time they have been granted licences to build churches.

“Go to the north, the vice, that is Shettima himself, I met him for over three hours, we discussed. I looked into the man’s eyes and raised a number of pertinent questions which I needed to be satisfied with and I was satisfied with his answers.

“He has built more churches in Borno state than any other before him and since that time and he won the confidence of many Christians. So the issue of Islamisation no longer arises.

Fani Kayode, a trenchant critic of the APC accused the party of trying to Islamise Nigeria.

But since he joined the ruling party from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP earlier this year, and having met the president in Aso Rock, Nigeria’s Presidency the former minister has toned down his frequent attacks on the government, close watchers of the nation’s politics say.

They insist that the former Minister of Aviation would no longer say anything that is capable of painting the ruling party in bad light ahead of the 2023 general election.

Therefore, many of his critics will not be surprised that he threw his weight behind the controversial Muslim/Muslim ticket.

Lagos Police Commissioner Sylvester-Abiodun-Alabi

By Akinwale Kasali

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alabi, has dispelled talks from different quarters that the State in under a partial lockdown.

Alabi said that contrary to the news spreading like fire which quoted him as saying that the State is under partial lockdown because of Intelligence Report that unknown gunmen are planning to attack, he never said that. He explained that he was misquoted out of context.

Alabi at the Lagos State Stakeholders’ Forum on Police Accountability quarterly meeting and awards while giving a keynote address on ‘Police Community Partnership: Panacea for Effective Police Performance’ at the event supported by Open Society Initiative for West Africa had said that the partial lockdown was for a purpose, stressing that the Police and other security agencies in Lagos were ready for any intruders.

He said that there were stop-and-search points at different places that had become part of the security architecture in the state to combat any likely intruder.

The Lagos Police boss who said that though the number of police personnel in the State were inadequate, added that with community/police partnership, the current number could tackle all crimes and criminality.

Alabi said that the Force was committed to accountability, where those with excellent performances would always be rewarded amongst the personnel, and sanctions would be meted out to erring and unprofessional ones.

But reports circulating on Social Media suggested that the State is under Partial Lockdown sending fears across Lagosians.

Reacting to this, CP Alabi said that in line with the prevailing security threats in the country, Policemen have been deployed to man the entry and exit points of the State to prevent crime.

Alabi, while speaking to newsmen Thursday said that the policemen deployed at the exit and entry points of the State were detailed to engage in stop-and-search enforcement.

He said the move was part of the Command’s proactive measures to protect lives and property through the provision of adequate security in the State.

Alabi: “It is just stop-and-search which is just preventive measures. It is just proactive and preventive measures because of the prevailing security situation in the country.

“We were advised to put in place preventive and proactive measures, so, partial lockdown where, we are just doing our normal stop-and-search to prevent crime, and it is at the entry and exit points and not that Lagos State is on partial lockdown.”

“Where is a partial lockdown?

“It is just stop-and-search which is just preventive measures. It is just proactive and preventive measures because of the prevailing security situation in the country.

“We were advised to put in place preventive and proactive measures, so, partial lockdown where, we are just doing our normal stop-and-search to prevent crime, and it is at the entry and exit points and not that Lagos State is on partial lockdown.

“Where is a partial lockdown? is there anything like partial lockdown? it is just stop and search as preventive measures.

There is Not anything like partial lockdown? it is just stop and search as preventive measures.”

Emirates Tired Of Nigeria; Suspends Operations From September

Emirate Airline

By Akinwale Kasali

Following the inability of United Arab Emirates, UAE, owned Emirates Airline to repatriate its funds from Nigeria, it has announced the suspension of its flight operations from September 1st, 2022.

The Airline made this disclosure Thursday August 18, 2022. It stressed that as an International carrier operating in Nigeria, it has repeatedly complained about its inability to repatriate funds to their home country.

This issue, the Airline noted, has been raised on many occasions with officials of the Federal Ministry of Aviation, as well as those at the Finance Ministry.

Emirates, in a statement said that the blocked funds belonging to its airlines have risen to about $600m, due to the inability of the Central Bank of Nigeria to make the United States Dollar available for the carriers to repatriate.

In its statement on Thursday, Emirates Airlines stated that it “has tried every avenue to address our ongoing challenges in repatriating funds from Nigeria, and we have made considerable efforts to initiate dialogue with the relevant authorities for their urgent intervention to help find a viable solution.”

It added, “Regrettably there has been no progress. Therefore, Emirates has taken the difficult decision to suspend all flights to and from Nigeria, effective September 1, 2022, to limit further losses and impact on our operational costs that continue to accumulate in the market.

“We sincerely regret the inconvenience caused to our customers, however, the circumstances are beyond our control at this stage. We will be working to help impacted customers make alternative travel arrangements wherever possible.”

It, however, noted that should there be any positive developments in the coming days regarding Emirates’ blocked funds in Nigeria, the airline would, of course, re-evaluate its decision.

“We remain keen to serve Nigeria, and our operations provide much-needed connectivity for Nigerian travellers, providing access to trade and tourism opportunities to Dubai, and to our broader network of over 130 destinations,” the global carrier stated.

The airline had, earlier scaled down the number of its flights to Nigeria as a warning.

Ondo/Akure Highway: Strong  Doubts Over Contractor’s Expertise

0
Prince Ademola Adegoroye

By Ayodele Oni

Residents of Ondo/Ekiti States have continued to put pressure on the Federal Government over the deplorable condition of Ado Ekiti/Akure highway.

Just as the Minister of State for transportation, Ademola Adegoroye promised to facilitate mobilization of contractor back to the road, a public affairs analyst, advised that the Minister should also ensure that competent firm handles the project.

Mr Ayodele Fagbohun, in a letter to the Minister, states that “As honourable minister, you must take the bull by the horns and critically look into the activities of Dantata and Sawoe firm that is handling the N22 billion Akure/Ado Ekiti dualisation project now criminally abandoned for over three years running.”

Chairman of Nigeria Governors Forum, (NGF) Kayode Fayemi, had explained that Ondo and Ekiti states earlier approached African Development Bank, (ADB) to fund rehabilitation of the highway, but frustrated by the Federal Government .

Fayemi said the road was awarded to the contractor, but the federal government refused to release fund to the contracting firm.

Fagbohun said in his letter that “The poor, appalling and worsening condition of the route as a critical artery that links both Ondo/Ekiti states to other parts of the country and Abuja FCT continues and exert strains and stress on the people, in terms of eking out means of livelihood, goods and services.

“There was a glimmer of hope which fired the expectation and aspirations of the people, as Dantata and Sawoe Construction (Nigeria) Limited and Factorial Engineering, a firm of structural engineering, moved their men and materials to site, thinking on the stretch of imagination that work would commence in earnest.

“That was a very long time ago. To the disgust of the people and bewildered nation, work stopped abruptly, leaving the people agape and aghast.

“The people are very disenchanted and have lost faith in this administration on the slipshod and carefree attitude towards the execution of the project.

“They raise grouse on the unsavoury development of how the welfare and material well being of the articulate people in the South West can be brazenly violated, trampled upon, mortgaged and shortchanged with reckless abandon.

“I have no other choice than to say with all emphasis that it is preposterous and foolhardy for Dantata and Sawoe Group to take our people in Ondo/Ekiti states of South West for a jolly ride, thinking erroneously that they would just come around and defecate on us with impunity.

“By stealth, the neo-colonialist fascists and at best their commissioned agents in our midst, cashing in on Yoruba’s innate knack for hospitality and generosity and out of mischief, clandestinely work in concert to strangulate and impoverish the socio-economic life of our people.

“They now constitute an army of occupation to pillage our economic fortress and engage immorally in reconnoitering (spying) the land in terms of contract awards and dubious missions to overrun and violate the territorial integrity of South West with impunity.

“As far as road construction is concerned, the defunct Western Nigeria, now christened South West, is not a novice.  We have had the Israeli based construction firm, or Julius Berger firm, whose performance and work ethics are well rated as of best practices.

“In addition, we can source for local construction firms whose integrity can be vouched for, based on our cordial relationship and communal fraternity.

“Unlike the so called Dantata and Sawoe whose men and equipment can easily vanish or disappear into the thin air at the slightest provocation.

“To be brutally frank and honest with ourselves, Dantata and Sawoe are not genuine stakeholders nor should they be held accountable to any of South West’s projects.

“However if in the affirmatives, why the slipshod, lukewarm attitude and downright bestiality in handling the all important federal Akure/Ado-Ekiti dualization motor way project?

“I respectfully urge the Minister to deploy political ingenuity and network of connection as a grassroots politician to do the needful and ensure that the dilapidated, decrepit road is fixed within a short time frame.

“The dry season will soon set in to facilitate early re-construction of the road to bolster the economy of the South West in all its ramifications.

“Ondo/Ekiti States will also heave a sigh of relief if work actually commences in earnest to save or curtail to the barest minimum the present agony, anxiety, dangers of insecurity and its accompanied crimes in bad and ill maintained roads across the country.”

Zamfara: Food Poison Kills Family Of Seven

Zamfara State

2023: Obasanjo Says It’s Time For South To Rule After Meeting Tinubu

0

Following the meeting with Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress, APC presidential candidate former President Olusegun Obasanjo has said it’s the time for power to shift to the south.

Speaking after the meeting with the APC flagbearer, the former leader said it was wrong for the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP to give its presidential ticket to Atiku Abubakar, a northerner.

Atiku, a former vice president under Obasanjo’s presidency had emerged the winner in the shadow presidential primary held in June after defeating Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state.

The rancorous PDP primary has since polarized the party, as its elders are still trying to bridge the gulf between Atiku and Wike’s supporters who appear dissatisfied with the outcome of the election.

No one can tell yet whether Obasanjo’s comment meant he’s now supporting Tinubu’s presidential bid, but the former president has recently made a veiled attack against the PDP presidential candidate by saying he regretted picking him as his vice president in 1999.

“One of the mistakes I made was picking my Number Two when I wanted to become the president. But because it was a genuine mistake, God saved me,” the former president said of Atiku.

On the other hand, the former president and the APC flagbearer are considered political rivals, and both have shaded themselves on several occasions. Therefore, political watchers are still trying to figure out whether they will try to form an alliance against Atiku ahead next year’s presidential election.

Speaking in Abeokuta, Obasanjo said he was disappointed that PDP still went to pick Atiku as its torch bearer despite a provision in the party’s constitution that power should rotate between the North and south.

The incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari’s is from the North and his tenure will end next year after which a southerner is expected to take power. But PDP has breached the law, according to Obasanjo, who said the party’s decision is not politically correct and is against the spirit of the understanding between Northern and Southern Nigeria.

Obasanjo said, “I am very much aware that it’s the turn of the South to produce the next President of Nigeria. I was part of the meeting when the agreement was made between Northern and Southern leaders,” he said.

“I am even surprised PDP gave her ticket to another Northern candidate.

“It will be an injustice to the South if the North retains power after eight years of rule. We will do the right thing when the time comes.”

Costa Rica 2022: Falconets Defeat Canada To Go Top Of Group D; To Face Netherlands In Knockout Phase

An Esther Onyenezide brace from the penalty spot with a late Olise Strike cancelled out Canadian, Helen Novak second minute strike to give the Falconets of Nigeria a 3-1 win and the maximum points to top Group D at the ongoing FIFA Under-20 Women World Cup in Costa Rica played in the hours of today, August 18th, 2022, at the San Jose Stadium.

The Nigerian Ladies had already qualified for the Quarter Finals of the Championship having won their first two matches against France and South Korea by solitary goals.

They proved their supremacy as contenders for the coveted trophy by defeating Canada which lost all their three Group matches.

The Falconets went  into the game quite jittery after a blunder from Goalkeeper, Monle Oyono in the second minute, which made the Falconets nervy.

The Nigerian Ladies composed themselves and piled pressure on the Canadian defense which led to a foul on Okwuchuwu was led the Falconets attack and the resulting spot kick was converted by Esther Onyenezide in the 24th minute.

Eight minutes later, after a review by the Video Assistant Referee, VAR, the Falconets were another spot kick which was coolly slotted home by Onyenezide for her Third Goal of the tournament.

As the second half commenced, the Canadians searched for the needed equalizer but to no avail.

2023: Ogun PDP Crisis Escalates; Showunmi Vows To Get Governorship Ticket

0
Segun Showunmi

By Akinwale Kasali

The crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Ogun State has remained has continued to escalate as former Governorship Aspirant, Segun Showunmi has vowed to get the opposition Party’s Governorship ticket at all cost.

Showunmi is fighting over the PDP Gubernatorial Primary which saw Oladipupo Adebutu emerging as the Party’s Governorship Candidate.

He described the process as a charade,  prompting him to take a legal action against the process.

At the Court of Appeal on Monday, 15th, August, 2022, Showunmi had judgment of the Court in his favour. He  expressed confidence that at the end of the struggle, he would emerge the authentic candidate of the PDP in Ogun State in the next few weeks.

This was followed by, the August 17, 2022, judgment at the Appeal Court  Abuja, which he (Showunmi) said is  necessary to clarify, considering the barrage of calls and deep interest of the public in the matter. He noted that he was humbled by the number of Nigerians that were interested in the case.

Showunmi who was the spokesperson to Atiku Abubakar, the PDP Presidential candidate in the 2019 election, observed that for the health of democracy, Nigeria should have passed that stage where the imposition of candidates would be the order of the day.

The Court of Appeal in a judgement delivered by Justice Chidi Nwaoma Uwa, on Monday, found Showunmi’s appeal meritorious, with regard to two of the issues he raised in the suit against PDP and two others.

Reacting to the judgement, Showunmi said: “I went through the right channels right from the beginning even before the primary election, to draw the party’s attention to the anomaly going on in Ogun State. I want to put it on record that no one can intimidate me into conceding defeat where I am a winner. I will fight this battle to the end and will be on the ballot. No individual has a monopoly of wealth. Where is even the wealth? We must run on ideas. I have a network of family and friends that can easily and comfortably prosecute a governorship election.

“When the party declared open the sale of forms, it meant anybody who wanted to contest for any position including the presidency, should start buying form. My colleague, Hon Ladi Adebutu purchased his form on the very first day. Ironically, upon buying his form, Hon. Adebutu went to the media – the Television, Newspapers and Online platforms saying that the Executive Committee (EXCOs) of the Peoples Democratic Party bought the form for him.

“I reasoned that if we were to go into a contest that requires us to get adhoc delegates from the Excos in the wards and follow the rules that will lead to getting the delegates that will put together an electoral college that will elect the party’s candidate, I felt that the constitution of the PDP had been compromised and broken because the fact that they bought a form for a particular candidate shows that there is a bias, and that they have been compromised.

“Secondly, the Oath of Office of the EXCO which includes that they will be free, fair and just to all and sundry had also been compromised. The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria had also been breached relative to how political parties are to organise themselves.

“I, therefore, wrote a letter to the national organ of our party – the National Chairman’s Office, the National Secretary’s Office, the National Organizing Secretary’s Office and the National Legal Adviser’s Office, saying that it is unfair to purchase a contest form for one among several contestants. I offered remedial opportunities alongside my complaint.

“As a remedy, I recommended that the EXCO, which action showed bias should be dissolved or set aside while a fair set of people should be brought on board to superintend the primary election process.

“I gave a number of sound and progressive advice, and I explained that if they failed to do the needful, I would have no alternative but to seek redress in court. Because of their penchant to disregard everything that other people in other civilizations will treat as serious, I wrote the letter in the court and gave them a proof of service from the Federal High Court, Abuja.”

He said the Court of Appeal had been very thorough in its judgement and had given him victory in that first step, adding that every Nigerian must be able to exercise his legal rights within the law.

Reacting to the Appeal Court Ruling in a statement, the Director of Media, Ladi Adebutu Campaign Organisation, Afolabi Orekoya, said the purported affirmation of Showunmi as the candidate of Ogun PDP by the Appeal Court on Monday is a complete departure from the actual matter before the court.

Orekoya’s reaction came on the heels of the statement issued on Monday by the Showunmi group that the Appeal Court allowed the appeal of Showunmi and set aside the ruling of the lower court.

According to Orekoya, the fact of the matter is that the originating summons filed by Segun Showunmi was instituted at the State High Court of Ogun State on April 1, 2022 seeking:

“An order of the court to dissolve the entire executive of the Ogun State PDP on the premise that the executive of the state’s PDP was biased by obtaining form for one of the aspirants.

“An order seeking the barring of entire members of Ogun PDP executive from conducting the primaries of the party.

“An order seeking the national party to constitute a three-man caretaker committee to conduct the party’s primaries.”

He said that the trial judge, Abiodun Akinyemi of the State High Court on Thursday, May 19, 2022, ruled: “I find and hold that this court has no justification to entertain this suit. Accordingly, it is struck out.”

Orekoya said the above background was given for the public to be well informed that the basis of Showunmi’s appeal was based only on jurisdiction and not candidacy, saying: “The Appeal Court only sat on whether the state High Court has jurisdiction to hear his suit or not. The court only held that even though the matter is time-bound but the state high court should have given him an opportunity to hear his matter.

“Therefore, the purported report on some media platforms that the Appeal Court affirmed that Segun Showunmi is the candidate of the Ogun PDP was a fake and complete departure from the Appeal Court ruling.”
