In a bid to find a lasting solution to frequent border clashes, Nigeria and Cameroon officials have again met in Abuja.

At the parley, Federal Government  expressed determination that in no distant time, the areas of border disagreement between Nigeria and Cameroon would be resolved amicably.

The leader of the Nigerian delegation, Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN made this known at the 34th session of the Camaroon-Nigeria Mixed Commission (CNMC) held in Abuja.

“Nigeria is committed to the quick and successful execution of the mandates of the Mixed Commission,” Malami said, noting that areas of disagreement have been reduced to just three.

He called on the experts to “embrace pragmatism in order to reach consensus in all the three areas of disagreement,” hoping that “amicable solutions would be found as soon as possible to enable the work be completed.”

At the session, Nigeria and Government of Republic of Cameroon have shown commitment to work closely with parties to identify and encourage the implementation of trans-border infrastructural project to enhance the economic cooperation and the integration of the two countries and the west African region.

The Mixed Commission recommended that the two parties finalized the agreement on the joint exploitation of the hydrocarbon along the maritime border.

A Comminique issued at the end of the session noted that the parties involved did not have same understanding of the International Court of Justice’s (ICJ) judgment on the course of the boundary on localities of Rhoumski, Pillar 8 and Koja.

The Mixed Commission agreed to table discussion on the matter to the ICJ for clarification of its decision.

The two countries commended the sub-commission on Demarcation and the Joint Technical Team for reaching an agreement on the course of the boundary in Mabas village and the project steering committee and the technical monitoring team for successful construction of additional 327 pillars in Alantika mountains, which has been endorsed by Mixed Commission.

The Cameroon-Nigeria Mixed Commission was established pursuant to the Joint Communique adopted at a summit in Geneva on 15th November, 2002.

ASUU President, Osodeke, Says Three State-Owned Varsities  Not On Strike Are Quacks

As backlashes and condemnation continue to trail remarks by the president Academic Staff Union of Universities, (ASUU), Prof Emmanuel Osodeke for allegedly calling state owned universities quacks, there seems to be a twist to the statement.

Osodeke has debunked the report making the rounds that it named universities owned by State governments quack, saying he was misquoted.

Several media platforms were on Friday flooded with reactions to purported assertion by the ASUU President that state universities are quack and should not be taken seriously.

Prof Osodeke was reported on Thursday while speaking on Arise Television where he addressed some issues regarding the ongoing industrial action embarked upon by ASUU over six months ago to have made the remark.

Speaking about some State universities that recently pulled out of the struggle, the ASUU president said, “talk about important universities not those quacks. They’re not part of our strike”

The development has triggered backlash from some State universities and concerned Nigerians who lambasted the ASUU president for allegedly naming State universities ‘quack’.

Ekiti State University, (EKSU) in its reaction, stated that with that statement coming from Osodeke, he was bereft of ideas.

“This arrant nonsense coming from  Comrade Osodeke is totally unacceptable and condemnable.”

The Vice-Chancellor, Osun State University (UNIOSUN), Prof Odunayo  Adebooye, while reacting, described ASUU president as a careless talker by way of announcing universities that are no longer on strike are ‘quacks’.

Prof Adebooye stated the State university has 481 full-time educational workforce and among them, 387 are full-time Ph.D. holders, “this is now not a quack.”

Speaking with journalists on Saturday, the ASUU president debunked the report saying he was misquoted by the media.

According to Osodeke, he was referring to only three universities owned by State governments which are currently not on strike.

Describing the report as fake, Osodeke lamented unprofessionalism in reportage, alleging that the media aimed at creating confusion in the system.

“There is nothing like that. It is a lie. I have told myself that I will not talk to the press again because they always misrepresent things.

“I have found out that Nigerian press is specialized in manipulating interviews, reporting what someone did not say just to create confusion in the system. They won’t report things the way it is.”

In his address at the occasion, the Deputy Governor of Imo State,  Prof. Placid Njoku congratulated the women group for choosing Imo State for this year’s Convention and commended them for the choice of their theme.

Prof. Njoku said the theme “resonates with the 3R mantra of Imo State Administration of Senator Hope Uzodimma that is anchored on Reconstruction, Rehabilitation and Recovery.”

He added that the Uzodimma’s administration coined the 3R mantra to constantly remind Imo people of its mission in the State, noting that “Imo people will confirm that the current administration has lived up to the expectations,”  despite the challenges posed by Covid-19, ENDSARS and the festering of insecurity.

Prof Njoku further adduced that the challenges of insecurity in Nigeria have “affected every fabric of Nigerian economy, from agriculture to industry, trade, oil and gas, power and supply as well as deterred the social sector – education, health, transport and others, unemployment is at its peak, strikes are pervasive, poverty and hunger are surging.”

She said she is optimistic “God has promised to restore the lost glory and dignity of His people through His everlasting love for us.”

Earlier in her welcome address, the National President, Aglow International Nigeria and Member/Treasurer Aglow  Africa,  Mrs. Bisi Adeluyi did not betray her excitement and expressed gratitude to God for bringing them to Owerri to celebrate their 25th Anniversary. “It is the first National Conference of Aglow to be held in the South East Zone of  Nigeria,” she noted.

Oshiomhole To The Aggrieved: Learn From Me When I Was Ousted As APC Chairman; Seeks Support For Tinubu, APC Candidates

By Akinwale Kasali

The All Progressives Congress, APC, former National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, is  drumming up support for the APC Presidential Candidate, Asiwaju BolaTinubu

Oshiomhole urged members of the party to begin massive mobilization for next year’s election, noting that staying united was the only way the APC can win next year’s election.

The former Edo State Governor made this call at a stakeholders meeting in Benin  Edo State. He also  debunked the claim that he has endorsed a candidate for the 2024 governorship election in the state, stating that he has learnt his lesson.

The former leader of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, who is the Edo North Senatorial District Candidate in 2023,  said that party leaders in the Local Government Areas have an important role to play in the forthcoming elections, appealing to them to go home, hold meetings and sell their candidates to the electorate at the grass root.

He also called on aggrieved members to take a cue from him when he was ousted as the Chairman of the party after serving for two years.

He said, “The primaries are over and the candidates have emerged. We need to put away our differences that came at the primaries and queue behind our candidates, beginning from our presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, for two-time Governor of Lagos and the party’s national leader.

“The aggrieved members of the should learn from my act of political tolerance when I was ousted from office as the national chairman of the party. I had the opportunity to seek in redress, which would have stalled the party’s congress, but I didn’t.

“I have not endorsed anybody for the governorship election and I will not be doing so. I have learnt from my mistakes. I have also not ask anyone to step down or asked anyone to step up. The only person I asked to step down was my younger brother and this is because two Oshiomhole cannot be on the ballot.

He said, “In the past, when I asked people to step down, they did and never forgave me, while the ones that stepped up have not done anything to show for the faith responded in them.”

Oshiomhole spoke on the controversial party’s Muslim-Muslim ticket, and urged Nigerians not to be deceived by what other presidential candidates from other parties are saying, noting Tinubu is a tolerant Nigerian who has no ambition of making Nigeria an Islamic country.

Oshiomhole said, “We should explain to people about the APC ticket because there has been deliberate misinformation and an attempt to make the debate personal instead of issue-based.

“The issue is that we should vote a person that will develop the country. Those dwelling on the Muslim-Muslim ticket are doing so to distract people from the major issues. If they ask for your vote ask them to show you what they have done to deserve your vote.

“Tinubu did not make Islam mandatory for his wife who is a Senator and a pastor. His children are also Christians and Muslims. Is there a better example of religion tolerance?

“So, the Muslim Muslim ticket is not the problem today. You have unemployed christians youths who are hungry and we have unemployed Muslim youths who are hungry. Does it matter who governs?

Whoever will develop Nigeria that I think should be the issues and all these sentiments are meant to remove issues from the debate.”

Peter Obi To Nigerians: Don’t Listen To Any Presidential Candidate Through A Proxy

Peter Obi in Germany

By Akinwale Kasali

Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, has asked the electorate not to consider any of the Presidential candidates speaking through proxies.

Speaking to Nigerians that came to welcome him in Germany on Friday, Mr Obi said that every candidate must come and tell Nigerians his agenda to make Nigeria work.

The Presidential candidate  asked the electorate to do background checks on all Presidential candidates before listening to whatever promises they make

He said, “When you listen to us , go and check our background, this is not a time for somebody to show us his qualifications, I live in Nigeria and I know Nigeria and what Nigerians needs. I am not a stranger to Nigerian problems.

“I am a trader but I had the privilege to go to some of the best schools like Oxford, Cambridge, and other Ivy League institutions, but I always say to people that educational qualification is not the same as integrity. Listen to all the Presidential candidates not through proxy. Let anyone who wants to be your President come forward himself and speak to you directly, because he is the one you will hold responsible for whatever happens to Nigeria under his care.

“This campaign is not a campagin you are going to speak through somebody, that person needs to come and directly tell us what he is going to do for our country and we must take note of whatever he says and hold him by his words.”

“We also don’t want who would be carried to this place in a wheel chair, but must consider his capacity, competence, integrity and commitment.

Talking about racism, Peter Obi said, “I don’t see any country as racist. If you think your host country is racist  you can go back to your country. The reason why you are here is because your place is not working.

“So, it is our duty to turn things around in Nigeria for the good of our country.

“Somebody asked me a question about going to look for foregin investors , I said Nigerians outside are going to do what China and India did.

“It is good for us to go back and fix our place, we need to secure it and it is important for our place  to have proper leadership that is visionary, there is nothing happening in other countries that is rocket science, a country is measured by its productive capacity.

“Somebody asked me what are we going to do to stabilize the Naira and I said it is very simple;  production,  because the more you produce goods and export , the more your currency becomes strong. If you are looking for Dollars and Euro, just go and sell something to somebody that has Euro and Dollar and your currency will become strong.

“We will ensure security of lives and bring stability to governance .

“Our human capital today is low, we have 200 million people with barely ten percent productive capacity. You also need to reduce the cost of Governance and have zero tolerance for corruptio. People cannot  continue to do what they are doing with government resources.”

He promised to provide opportunity for diaspora Nigerians to vote in the 2027 elections if elected president next year.

Mr Peter Obi also assured that Africa will remain the centrepiece of Nigeria’s foreign policy as it will improve diplomatic sphere of influence via peacekeeping, trade, and investment initiatives.

We Have Kept Faith With Vision Of Founding Fathers – Gov Oyetola As Osun Marks 31st Anniversary

By Ayodele Oni

As Osun state marks its 31st anniversary of its creation, Governor Adegboyega Oyetola, has said successive administrations have kept faith with the vision of founding fathers.

The Governor congratulated the citizens on the low key anniversary of the creation of the state.

In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Ismail Omipidan, the governor noted that having celebrated the 30th anniversary in a grand style last year, it is only reasonable for the government to make this one a low key.

While paying glowing tributes to the founding fathers of the state, including his predecessors in office, for laying what he called a “solid foundation,” upon which successive administrations have continued to build on, Oyetola said “we have kept faith with the vision of our founding fathers to sustainably build Ipinle Omoluabi – State of the Virtuous.”

The Governor added that the administration’s policies and programmes are driven by citizens’ needs, which were harvested during the Thank You Tour/Town Hall Meetings, where the people presented their yearnings and aspirations to the government.

He pointed out that the exercise was further validated by the United Kingdom Department for International Development’s (DFID)-funded Citizens’ Needs Assessment exercise in the State.

The Governor explained that every responsible government must make people’s demands the basis of its policies and implementation, insisting that this was responsible for some of the reforms the administration carried out by taking the bull by the horns.

He noted that so far, the administration has demonstrated that it is one government that could be trusted by the people of Osun both at home and in the Diaspora, since it has been able to fulfil most if not all the promises made to the people.

This is despite the initial legal distractions that lasted about eight months, the Covid-19 pandemic and the Endsars challenges that took another one year plus as well as the prevailing economic challenges.

“We promised to pay full salary to all our workers, we have not defaulted. We promised to pay our pensioners, we have also not defaulted. We promised to build Olaiya Flyover, we have done that.

“We promised to diversify the economy, it is already in progress. We promised to reform the mining and education sectors, we have done that as well. We promised to renovate one PHC per ward, we have done 320 out of the 332 and we shall complete the remaining soonest.

“We promised to build, remodel and, in some cases, carry out total rehabilitation of existing roads. That too, we have done, and some other road projects are on-going. We will ensure completion of all on-going road projects.

“We also promised to revive the airport project without inflicting additional burden on the finances of the State. I am glad to report that work is on-going at the project site by the Nigerian Air Force and soon, Osun will be home to Africa’s first Aviation City.

“We promised to deliver Ilesa University. Only three days ago, we inaugurated the Implementation Committee.

“Let me restate here that the University is not a product of mere fanciful effort, but rather a product of thorough and rigorous interrogation, characteristic of the culture of deep engagement which our administration is noted for.”

2023: INEC Vows Not To Lower Electoral Bar; Will Punish Political Parties That Violates Electoral Processes

Independent National Electoral Commission

By Akinwale Kasali

Electoral umpire, the Independent National Electoral Commission has vowed to punish political parties found to be violating electoral timelines as well as provisions of the new Electoral Act 2022 (as amended), especially during the 2023 elections.

It also promised that it would maintain its ground not to jettison electronic transmission of results and revert to manual process and would not lower the bar in next year’s election.

The Commission’s National Commissioner and Chairman of its Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye, made the clarification during a post-election roundtable and public presentation of the final report on the observation of 2022 Ekiti and Osun Governorship Election, organised by a human rights organisation, Yiaga Africa today, Friday, August 25th, 2022.

He said, “I want to seize this opportunity to assure Nigerians that this present commission will be bold and courageous in prosecuting the 2023 general elections.

“We are going to harvest and we will continue to harvest lessons from the Edo governorship election, Ondo governorship election, Anambra governorship election, and Ekiti and Osun governorship elections in shaping the way we approach the 2023 general election.

“We are going to harvest all the good practices, we are also going to look at some of those issues we did not do so well and we will improve on them.

“But our assurance is that this commission will not lower the bar and we are going to improve and we continue to improve with every election.

All the good practices we deployed in prosecuting the elections under review will also be deployed for the prosecution of the 2023 general election.

“This Commission will continue to upload polling unit results to our INEC results viewing portal; this Commission will not depart from it.

“The Nigerian people will be involved at every inch of the process in terms of knowing what is going on at the various polling units through our processes and procedures.

“We will continue to also manage the collation process transparently so that all Nigerians will also follow whatever we are doing and we will not depart from all the good practices we have established.”

While seeking the cooperation of Nigerians, Okoye advised civil society organisations and other critical stakeholders to study the Electoral Act 2022 in order to gain needed knowledge of its provisions.

“There are creative and innovative provisions that have been imputed into the Electoral Act 2022 that has changed the framework and dynamics of election management and result management in Nigeria.

“Unless we have a good knowledge of these documents, it will be very difficult for us to follow the trajectory of the electoral process and some of the innovations and some of the changes the commission we make and we continue to make towards improving the character and content and context of elections.

“We plead for the understanding of Nigerians, we plead for the cooperation of Nigerians because we recognise the fact that the 2023 election will be challenging, but we have the capacity, and we also have the courage to face those challenges in a very broad and courageous manner.”

Restating its commitment on electoral monitoring, Yiaga Africa’s Board Chair, Hussaini Abdu, urged INEC to take a cue from the Ekiti and Osun gubernatorial elections seeing that elections were held in those states just after the 2022 electoral act was passed.

Abdu, stating that poor logistics has been a major bane in the history of Nigeria, tasked INEC on improvement.

He said, “Many times, particularly in the last three rounds or cycles of elections these ones that we categorise as up season elections shape the character of what to expect in the forthcoming general elections.

“We saw that in 2015 and we saw that in 2019, but what makes this more remarkable and require much deeper reflections and conversations is the fact that we have elections taking place after the new electoral Act and that is very important.”

Adeleke Will Not Be Distracted By Oyetola, APC’s Shenanigans – Human Right Lawyer, Pelumi Olajengbesi

By Akinwale Kasali

Osun State Governor-elect, Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has been advised to shun the campaign of calumny and petition of the Osun State Governor, Gboyega Oyetola at the Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Osogbo, Osun State Capital, in which the incumbent has alleged irregularities in the July 16, 2022, Governorship election in the State.

A Human Rights Activist and Lawyer, Pelumi Olajengbesi, said that the move by the All Progressives Congress, APC and Governor Oyetola are mere distraction to the Governor-designate who had a landslide victory at the Governorship Polls in the State.

At the polls, Adeleke won in 17 Local Government Areas with a total of 403,371 people casting their votes for the PDP candidate, while Oyetola came in second place with 375,027 votes.

In his petition to the Election Petition Tribunal in Oshogbo, Oyetola cited irregularities and called for the results of the election to be cancelled.

On Tuesday, August 23, the Election Petition Tribunal panel granted Oyetola’s application to serve Adeleke a notice of the petition through substituted means.

Olajengbesi, a former candidate for Oriade Constituency in the Osun State House Assembly under the PDP, said Adeleke will not be distracted but will focus on the job at hand and hit the ground running immediately he is sworn-in in November.

Olajengbesi added that the Shenanigans of the APC and Oyetola will be neglected as this is inconsequential to the Governor elect who is bent on hitting the ground running once he his sworn in as the Executive Governor of the State.

“The Governor-elect of Osun State, Senator Ademola Adeleke, won’t be distracted no matter the stones hurled at his train by detractors and naysayers. The PDP governor-elect remains focused with his eyes set alone on the ball.

“The inauguration of a special youth advisory committee on Thursday is testament to the fact that Senator Adeleke has hit the ground running. As the governor-elect said during the inauguration, the committee will address deepening unemployment, under-employment, drug abuse, thuggery and cultism, internet fraud and a loss of hope caused by failed leadership amongst the youths.

“The governor-elect also said his administration will revive the National Youth Council, support expansion of faith-based youth organisations, upgrade the digital economy as an economic booster, and establish incubation and innovation development centres across the state.

“The fact that the committee will also bridge the gap between the young and the old is another testimony to the youth-centric commitment of Senator Adeleke, whose nephew is the popular songster, David Adeleke, aka Davido,” Olajengbesi stated.

Fashola On The Cross Over  Buhari Administration’s Debt

0

By Akinwale Kasali

Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Raji Fashola has come under strong criticism for justifying   President Muhammadu Buhari administration’s debt profile. He said the debts incurred by Buhari were justifiable because they were used for the provision of infrastructures across the nation.

The former Lagos State Governor asserted this at the closing ceremony of the 28th National Council of Works meeting held in Kano on Thursday.

He said the ongoing projects across the country had justified the debts, especially when compared with what the previous administrations had done.

“Our first budget in 2016 was over N250bn, up from the N18 billion we met in 2015. That was an increase of over a thousand percent, even though the price of crude oil was dropping, we did not raise taxes.”

He added that the Federal Government had been able to deliver more than 1,800 kilometers of roads across the six geo-political zones so far, stressing that the Buhari-led Administration was determined to complete all the ongoing projects before the expiration of its tenure in May next year.

Reacting to the statement, Political Analyst and Media Practitioner, Maureen Popoola said this shows the opaqueness in this government as it has clearly shown that the All Progressives Congress, APC, was not  prepared for Governance, rather, they were just bent on taking over the government.

“They have crippled the economy. What can this government say they have done with all the Abacha loot recovered all these years. What the APC administration accused the government of former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan of is what they are also doing. How can someone  justify that debt incurred was beneficial for the nation?

“It saddens me and I have decided to just look and observe from afar. This administration hasn’t done anything positive for the nation, rather we are lagging behind economically. How can the Minister of Finance say they are giving the vulnerable money and Billions of Naira are spent with nothing to show for. It is really pathetic”.

In the same vein, Social Commentator, Chidi Levi, said Fashola is just playing to the gallery by making such unguarded statement.

“In other climes they borrow to produce, invest and provide infrastructures, but in Nigeria we borrow to pay debts, service loan, service flamboyant lifestyles, pay our legislators, pay salaries and other unnecessary and unwarranted things. This is toxic borrowing. I don’t see the yardstick for him to have said that. It is disheartening that there is justification for the borrowing, he is just playing to the gallery “.
