CNPP Urges Buhari To Reverse Appointment Of Suspected APC Members Into INEC

0
Muhammadu Buhari

Conference Of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to immediately reverse the appointment of suspected members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) and other positions of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) if the President means well for Nigeria.

The CNPP’s Secretary General, Chief Willy Ezugwu in a statement told President Buhari to “at least pay Nigeria back with a free, fair and credible elections in 2023.”

According to the CNPP, “having been a beneficiary of unconstitutional change of power in 1983 as a military head of state and later transformed into a democrat and eventually got the endorsement of Nigerians who elected him as President in 2015, it will be extremely unfair to Nigeria for President Muhammadu Buhari to scuttle the transition to another administration in 2023.

“Section 14(2a) of the Third Schedule of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) expressly states that “a member of the commission shall be non-partisan and a person of unquestionable integrity.”

“In Section 14(3b) of the same Schedule of the Constitution states that “there shall be for each state of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory of Abuja, a Resident Electoral Commissioner who shall be a person of unquestionable integrity and shall not be a member of any political party.”

“Therefore, if President Buhari is indeed a democrat and a hater of injustice as he poses, the appointment of the suspected APC members should be immediately reversed by Mr. President.

“At the moment, the appointment of known partisan individuals and persons of questionable integrity into INEC is, to say the least, unconstitutional and a bait for political unrest and a mortgaging of free and fair electoral process which must be immediately corrected to boost the confidence of the electorate ahead of 2023 general elections”, the CNPP stated.

The CNPP recalled that a coalition of Civil Society Organisations, including the International Press Centre, had alleged that the INEC nominee from Sokoto was an APC governorship aspirant in 2015, alleging that the nominee for Enugu is the younger sister of the APC Deputy National Chairman, South East, among others accused of being persons of questionable integrity.

You Cannot Extradite Abba Kyari To US, Court Tells Federal Government

0

By Gideon Njoku

A Federal High Court in Abuja has stopped the Federal Government from extraditing disgraced and suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, DCP Abba Kyari, to the United States of America, USA, to answer to alleged criminal charges against him.

USA’s Federal Bureau of Investigation, FBI, had in 2021, shocked Nigerians when it indicted Kyari on criminal charges based on the submissions of an international Internet fraudster, Hishpuppi.

The fraudster, a Nigerian, was arrested in Dubai and extradited to the US. He has since been found guilty, but not before he roped in  Kyari as a beneficiary and supporter of his illegal activities. The FBI had requested Kyari’s extradition  to the US to answer to the charges.

In response, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister for Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, filed an a suit requesting the Court to order Kyari’s extradition.

But on Tuesday, the Honourable Justice Inyang Ekwo dismissed the case as incompetent and a waste of time, and bereft of merit. He chided Malami for filing the suit when he knew that Kyari was already facing a trial before a competent Court for alleged involvement in drug running.

The Judge expressed surprise that the same Malami, the Nigeria’s Chief Law Officer, who gave the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency a fiat to prosecute Kyari in Court would, in the same breath, file a suit for his extradition to the US.

The law, explained Ekwo, stipulates that until the case against Kyari being prosecuted by the NDLEA, is disposed off, for or against him,  Kyari cannot be extradited to the US to answer to any charges.

Ekwo: ” The AGF could not say that he was unaware of the pending proceeding against the defendant which was entered against him by the NDLEA.

Once a defendant is docked before a Court of competent jurisdiction, Ekwo said, he/she “shall not be surrendered until such case has been discharged either by conviction or acquittal”

Kyari is, presently, an inmate of the Kuje Correctional Centre, Abuja.

2023: Wike Gets Marching Order On Peter Obi’s Candidacy

Nyesom Wike

By Akinwale Kasali

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has been given a marching order on the Presidential aspiration of the Labour Party candidate, Peter Obi.

A Rivers State based Group,  Non-indigenes Association, has urged him to back the  LP  candidate to win the presidential election in 2023.

The call by the Group is coming on the heels of a meeting held in London between Wike, his Camp, and Obi, who was accompanied to the meeting by former President Olusegun Obasanjo. Wike also held  meetings with the PDP Presidential Candidate, Atiku Abubakar and the All Progressives Congress, APC, Presidential Candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Felix Ogbegbor, Chairman of the Association, made this call during a media briefing in Port Harcourt.

Ogbegbor said Wike should not make the mistake of supporting Atiku or Tinubu as, according to him, they have nothing to offer the country.

The Group explained that as Governor of Anambra State, Obi performed well and left a clean record, pointing out that he has a better agenda to reposition the country.

Ogbegbor, noted that among the three candidates fielded by the APC, PDP, and LP,  Peter Obi stands out and is most preferred because of his record of performance and integrity, hence their call on Wike to support him.

He said Nigeria currently doesn’t need a leader above 70 years old, saying Tinubu and Atiku cannot lead the nation out of its current economic and security challenges.

“I think Peter Obi is the best person that Wike should support. Atiku Abubakar and Bola Tinubu don’t have anything to offer.

“If Atiku and Tinubu cannot step down, Wike should support Peter Obi. We don’t need an elderly person in that office again. The others are above 70 and we don’t need people now.

“If Wike supports Obi, we will be right behind him,” he said, saying the association comprising non+indigenes across the country has passed a conference vote on Governor Wike.

He said the association would only support and work for candidates backed by Wike, adding that the Governor has demonstrated competence in leadership.

“Governor of Rivers State is a pride of the people. Wike has all it takes to be Nigeria’s president. We are here to support a young man who knows what it takes to please his people.

“Wike for the past seven years we have not seen the kind of development he is driving before. He always attracts good things to Rivers State.

“That is why we have decided to follow him. Whatever he (Wike) says we should do that is what we will do.

“What person he wants to vote we will. Anywhere he goes we will go,” the association’s chairman said.

Incidentally, in Edo State, thousands of OBIdients, as Obi’s supporters are known, during their march a couple of days ago, called on Wike to back Obi.

Prof. Akintoye, Apologizes to Victims of  Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade in Yoruba Land, Says Their Spirits, Angry

0
Dr Banji Akintoye

By Akinwale Kasali

The Yoruba Leader and Head of Yoruba Nation Self-Determination Struggle, Professor Banji Akintoye, on Sunday apologized to the victims of Trans-Atlantic slave trade in Yoruba Land.

The Professor of History disclosed that some of the victims of the slave trade cursed the future generation of Yoruba people over the unholy collaboration between the then leaders of the Yoruba people and the Portuguese and Dutch Business men who came to Africa for the business of slave trade in 18th century.

Akintoye, in an open letter to the Yoruba people which he personally signed and made available to Reporters said the Holy Spirit told him that the spirits of those forefathers sold for peanuts to Portuguese and Dutch people as slaves are behind the lack of growth, development, progress, peace and unity in Yoruba Land, and among the Yoruba people.

As documented by multiple reports,  more than one million Africans, including the Yoruba people, were exported to Europe and America as Slaves by Europeans bringing salt to Africa in 18th Century through Porto Novo and Whydan Kingdom in the present day Benin Republic with the collaboration of some local Warriors.

Akintoye, a renowned Historian and Scholar, said the curses placed on the Yoruba people by victims of the Trans-Atlantic slave trade, many of whom jumped into the Atlantic Ocean during their forced trips to Europe and America, need to be cleansed in order for the Yoruba people to enjoy God’s favour, cohesion, unity and progress.

The Full Text of the Open Letter of Apology  reads:

“Dear Yoruba people, my name is Professor Banji Akintoye. This letter comes to you as an overdue apology from the several generations of the Yoruba race that are dispersed around the world. This is not an ordinary letter; it is an epistle borne out of deep revelation and shared by many children of God of Yoruba extraction all over the universe.

“Predating colonialism and slavery in Africa in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the Yoruba race had engaged in internal conflicts, resulting in marauding, intra-tribal and internecine warfare. Historians mostly agree that such civil unrests did not result in commercialization of human captives until the era of colonialism and slave trade on the African soil.  Yet, we have to agree that foreigners did not do this without the cooperation of some of the indigenous people, the Yoruba.

“According to the revelation referenced above, a segment of the captive Yoruba sons and daughters hauled into slavery looked back and placed a curse on the land and the people that violated their humanities by selling them into slavery. Furthermore, Holy Spirit revealed that some among the Yoruba captives committed suicide by jumping off the captive ships into their deaths deep into the Atlantic Ocean, while others simply placed the curse and endured the shame by continuing the captive’s journey. For this, the need for reconciliation and unreserved apologies is real and past due.

“Against this backdrop of atrocity of historical proportions unleashed against the peoples of Black Africa, which escalated into the full-blown slavery, the current generation of the Yoruba seeks to tender an unreserved, heart-felt apology on behalf of our past generations of forefathers, monarchs and chiefs who participated in slavery, those who folded their hands in helplessness and hopelessness, those who looked the other way when they could have spoken or stood against the perpetrators of this heinous crime against humanity, and those who cooperated and/or benefitted from the sales of their brothers and sisters, children, parents, friends and neighbors.

“Words alone cannot atone for the immeasurable amount of suffering endured by our brothers and sisters during the forceful passages into the New World as they entered the narrow passage that ushered them into the journey of no return. Yet, words have to be offered to express remorse, regret and above all, to ask for forgiveness that could only come from the heart, and straight from the throne of grace.

“In all reality, a crime half a millennium old may seem forgotten and forgettable, perhaps it may even be misconstrued as negligible and perceived as having outlived the statute of limitation; yet, as the Yoruba often say in the context of their indigenous rhetoric,

“The one who passed feaces to mess up the path may forget, but the one who had to clean up the mess will never forget. Even if the smell is gone, the thought of the blemish and inner violation may linger.

“Having said all that, we say it from the bottom of our hearts that we sincerely understand if you still nurse the hurt and feel the pain; after all, years may heal the wound, but the scar may always remain. All we can say is to appeal that you please forgive our forefathers on whose behalf we tender these apologies; and to forgive us as offspring of our erring progenitors.

“May God bless you, lighten your burdens, redeem time for you and generations to come after you and heal our land. Above all, may the Lord of the Universe forgive the Yoruba race and move it into a new dispensation in its onward march towards the attainment of redemption and enjoyment of its potential, Amen!”

ASUU Strike: Peller Charges Students To Use Their Numerical Strength in 2023; Blames Anti-People Leadership For Strike

Shina Peller

By Akinwale Kasali

A member of the House of Representatives, Shina Peller, has attributed the ongoing Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, strike to the failure to elect pro-people leaders.

The strike action which has crippled Educational Activities in  Universities has entered day 194.

Peller, representing Iseyin/Itesiwaju/Kajola/Iwajowa constituency therefore charged Nigerian students to leverage on their numerical strength and influence the election of  good leaders, who will move the country forward.

In a statement on Sunday signed by his media aide,  Kola Popoola, after he was decorated as Life Patron of the National Association of Nigerian Students at a ceremony to mark the 40th anniversary of the association Peller decried the situation where the students have been out of their lecture room for years.

He expressed his displeasure over the lingering ASUU strike which has been on for 194 days with no desirable resolve from the concerned authorities.

Peller described the situation as worrisome and called on Nigerian students to make their numbers count by ensuring that the country’s next set of leaders are patriotic and selfless Nigerians.

He said: “My profound gratitude to the student association for finding me worthy of the honour. Let me also seize this opportunity to remind Nigerian students of their numerical strength and how they can change the narrative in Nigeria – because the system has failed you.

Speaking further on the topic “Public education on the brink of collapse: Rescue it now or prepare for the alternative,” Peller said, “It is disturbing that Nigerian students are staying at home for 194 days due to the ASUU strike.

“The country’s education system is on the brink of collapse and Nigerian students must use their numbers to usher in a pro-people leadership in 2023.

“With over 30 million Nigerian students in the country, President Muhammadu Buhari won the previous election with slightly more than 15 million votes.

“This demonstrates that the Nigerian student population is capable of influencing and changing the leadership direction in our nation. The youth are the future and must become more involved in the process of electing competent and visionary Leaders . The time is now!”

Explaining the rationale behind the award of the Life Patron of the National Association of Nigerian Students given to the lawmaker, the NANS President, Sunday Asefon, stated that the lawmaker had always been an advocate of Nigerian students and youth, and that he is ever concerned about their welfare and development.

Recall that Peller, through his NGO, Lead Generation Initiative has successfully trained thousands of youths across the country on effective leadership skills, strategic communication, civic responsibility, active citizenship and nation building.

Also, the lawmaker is the National Coordinator of WE2GEDA Nigeria, a movement of millions of young patriotic Nigerians, coming together, irrespective of ethnic, religious and political affiliation, to establish a new united system of leadership comprising young, competent and patriotic leaders for selfless and more effective governance.

Committee Of Pro Chancellors Says State Varsities Not Bound By ASUU Agreement With FG

By Ayodele Oni

The Committee of Pro-Chancellors of State-owned Universities (COPSUN) has reminded the striking leadership of Academic Staff Union of Universities, (ASUU) that State Universities cannot be forced or coerced to implement agreements it reached with the Federal Government.

Fuming members of COPSUN, while reacting to name calling by ASUU President, Emmanuel Osodeke, said this is because their workers  are not parties to those agreements.

“It is time to respect the Federal nature of our Government in all matters and not selectively, especially on the issues of salaries.”

COPSUN says it read with alarm and disbelieve a statement made by the President of the ASUU Prof. Osodike on a television programme on Arise, where he said that State Universities are “irrelevant and quacks” on 26th August, 2022.

This was contained in a statement by Marcus Awobifa, COPSUN’s Secretary on Monday.

ASUU President had since clarified his position, saying he was referring to just three state universities that are not on strike.

The statement pointed out that “COPSUN noted that it would have ignored the tendentious, ill conceived and flagrant unconscionable statement by the President of ASUU, but on reflection, it thought it necessary to do a rejoinder to the unfortunate statement.

“Though, COPSUN will not want to go into any diatribe with the President of ASUU, the Committee wishes to state as follows to put records straight:

“That the Pro-Chancellors of our State Universities and indeed members of the Councils are distinguished and accomplished eminent persons who had served and still serving this Nation in many capacities.

“Amongst the members are retired Ambassadors, retired Generals in the Armed forces, retired Vice-Chancellors, Senior Advocates of Nigeria, renowned politicians and other distinguished professionals.

“It is therefore insulting, contemptuous and unbecoming for the President of ASUU to state that these esteemed individuals are presiding over quack and inconsequential Universities.

“It belies belief that the President of ASUU does not realize that his

loquacious vituperation and obsolete stalinist, centralized, unpopular approach to the issue of funding of tertiary education in a modern globalized world is archaic, antiquated and impracticable anywhere in the world.

“COPSUN believes that this is an auspicious time for ASUU to creatively work with all stakeholders to tinker out a compromise that will bring back to the campuses the young men and women who have been

insensitively thrown out of the universities for the last six months.

“COPSUN wishes to appeal to the President of ASUU to realize that the membership of ASUU is voluntary.

“Therefore, it is not his ill-informed approach and denigration of state universities that will lead to fashioning out creative approaches to avoid existential extinction that will solve the myriad of problems confronting University system in Nigeria.

“The very unfortunate ill digested view of the President of ASUU has vindicated the position of this Committee on the following issues:

“The negative professionalization of offices of the Unions that operate in our Universities and the unserious believe among many members of the Unions that the Unions are superior to the Councils of the Universities that are their employers.

“The need for immediate democratisation of the membership of Unions in the universities to the extent of the freedom of any individual to belong to a Union with options of not belonging.

“Devolution of powers on the issues of labour, wages and salaries with freedom of the employers to negotiate with their employees, as it is practiced in other parts of the world, where we borrowed the University system.

“State Universities cannot be forced or coerced to implement agreements reached between the Federal Government and her workers in the Universities to which they are not parties.

“It is time to respect the Federal nature of our government in all matters and not selectively, especially on the issues of salaries and wages.”

2023: PDP Reminds Shettima Of Chibok Girls’ Abduction, Says He Can’t Handle Security

0

For allowing the famous abduction of the Chibok Girls to happen under his watch, the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, has warned Nigerians that Kashim Shettima cannot handle the nation’s security.

Shittima had said last week at the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA conference that he will handle security as Vice president if his party wins the election in 2023.

According to him, his principal and APC presidential candidate, Bola Ahmed Tinubu will only focus on the economy.

“I have been in the theatre of conflicts for 18 years, I will lead the troops, my principal is an economy wizard who has transformed Lagos into the third largest economy in Africa. He will concentrate on the economy.

“By God’s grace, I will handle the security, and not only handle the security, I will lead the troops to battle across the length and breadth of this country,” he said.

Shettima, a former governor of Borno state was in office when 276 girls were seized from their school dormitory in the middle of the night on 14 April 2014.

The incident happened ahead of the 2015 presidential election and not a few Nigerians believe that the state government did not handle the abduction with the promptness it deserves, particularly after it failed to inform the PDP-led federal government about the incident on time.

Others also insist that the abduction was a conspiracy to oust former President Goodluck Jonathan from power because the incident took place in the middle of his re-election campaigns.

The PDP said going by his antecedent in handling the Chibok girls’ abduction the former governor cannot be trusted to handle the nation’s security.

According to Ehilebo, “How come you come to the NBA programme and announce on live TV that you will take care of security and your principal will handle the economy?

“Section 130 (2) of the 1999 Constitution specifies that it is the role of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. And if he decides to delegate the power, it must be to the armed forces. But here we have a VP candidate telling the world he wants to be in charge of our security.

“This is the same man in charge when the issue of Chibok Girls happened. Shettima ignored the directive to move the students and the terrorists took advantage.

“It is also a fact that a suspected terrorist, Kabiru Sokoto, was arrested in the Governor’s Lodge by the DSS. Today, we have not been able to dissociate him from all that.

“Unfortunately, Nigerians are more interested in his sneakers and what he wore to the NBA than his statement.”
