Imo: Three Wedding Guests Missing; Whereabouts Unknown

0

By Charles Igbo

Three wedding guests, all young men, are missing in Imo State.

The three attended the wedding from their Owerri homes to Isiala Mbano on Sunday, August 28, 2022. As at Wednesday when their disappearance became public, they had not returned, and no contact has been made of their whereabouts.

They are identified as Alaefula Chimuru, Madu Promise, and Victor Chibuike.

Their worried families have reported their sudden and inexplicable disappearance to the Police but that has brought no comfort or hope.

They had gone to the wedding in a grey coloured Lexus RX 330, and left for their Owerri homes thereafter. But they are yet to be home three days after.

Fortune Madu, a sibling of one of them, Madu Promise, confirmed the story to the Punch Correspondent in Owerri. He said: “They left a wedding ceremony at Isiala Mbano on Sunday, and didn’t get back home. Up till now, we have not seen them. Their phone numbers are permanently switched off. We have sent then messages on their social media handles, and no reply. We have reported to the Police.

The questions are: In whose custody are they? Were they abducted by hoodlums for ransom? And if so, why have the hoodlums not contacted their families three days after? Were they arrested by the Police, seeing that they are young people, traveling in a Lexus RX 330? Are they alive or dead?

On Wednesday, Theodore Uba, an Activist/Journalist, issued a statement on the mystery surrounding the disappearance of the three young men.

The statement reads: “This is to inform the general public that these three young men whose pictures appear below have been declared missing.

“The three young men with names: ALAEFULE CHIMURU COLLINS, MADU PROMISE AND VICTOR CHIBUIKE, who are based in Owerri, Imo State, attended a wedding ceremony in Isiala Mbano LGA on Sunday 28th August 2022 with a grey colour Lexus RX 330, and have been unable to return back to their respective homes from the event.

“Efforts to reach them through their social media devices and social media handles prove abortive. None of their family members has been able to figure out their current location up till now.”

He said a search has been launched for them and a report made to the Police Criminal Investigation Department, CID, Owerri, for their intervention.

The Imo State Police Command has not issued a statement on the incident yet.

If INEC Is Fair, Nigerians Will Be Surprised At The Outcome Of 2023 Elections  – Wike

0

By Charles Igbo

In a clear allusion to the speculations that he and his Camp are not likely to vote for Atiku Abubakar, the Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the 2023 Presidential election, Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, has revealed that Nigerians will be shocked at the outcome of the oncoming elections.

Both Atiku and Wike are of the same Political Party, PDP.

Speaking on Wednesday, August 31, 2022, at the Ikwerre Local Government Area of the State, where he flagged off the construction of Igwuruta Internal Roads, Wike said if the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, will be fair and transparent, a shock awaits Nigerians in 2023. He added: “Rivers votes are not for free.A day will come when Rivers people will  take a decision on what to do.”

The Governor whose relationship with Atiku has remained fractured since the former Vice President beat him to a second place during the Party’s Presidential Primary, and chose Delta State Governor, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa as his running mate, in his stead, Wike has left tongues wagging over who he would support in the Presidential election. He has boasted that wherever he goes, Rivers State goes.

To lose the State in a Presidential election is a big deal.

Apparently in response to the National Chairman of the Party, Dr Iyorchia Ayu, who referred to those who want him to step down as children who do not know why the Party was formed, Wike said he would do the bidding of Nigerians not that of individuals who are in the minority.

He said nobody can threaten him, and that Nigerians would “soon know some of these characters.” Wike and his Camp are asking Ayu to step down from office as the National Chairman because the Presidential candidate is of the same North as Ayu. Ayu had, also, allegedly, promised to step down if the PDP Presidential candidate is a Northerner. He has since reneged on that promise, insisting on his four-year tenure.

Wike: “Time will come when Nigerians will know these types of characters; characters that will say all kinds of things because of power; characters that will be agents to destroy their own people. They should take one day fasting and pray for their forgiveness because from what I have seen, they are almost doomed.

“There is no amount of threats that will make me betray my people. I won’t do that. What I have said today is what I will say tomorrow. Go and check our history. We are not known for being betrayers, at all.

“Some people threatened that they are former Generals, they are close to the CIA in America; they can deal with us. I say, listen, no problem. If you are close to America’s CIA, why didn’t you use it to solve the the Boko Haram problem? Nigeria has a serious problem, and you are linked to the CIA, why not use that contact and solve Nigeria’s problem?

“You want to use it to threaten me. Who are you? I should come and do your own bidding? I will not do that. I will do the biddings of Nigerians, not the bidding of a few individuals who believe that if they are not there, it must be their children, no other person should come up. I will not do that. A day shall come, and Rivers people will take a decision on what to do.”

It is not known the people, the Generals, who are threatening Wike with the CIA when, according to him,  they are not able to tackle Boko Haram with the CIA. Wike did not reveal their identities.

However, according to a political analyst, “he is not referring to Atiku because Atiku is neither a General, nor has anything to do with the American CIA.”

You Can’t Get 25% of Votes in Most States, PDP Mocks APC

0

The Peoples Democratic Party has said that the ruling  All Progressives Congress, APC, is not capable of getting 25 per cent of votes in most States in the oncoming 2023 General elections.

Aside from winning majority votes, the would-be-winner of the Presidential election, is expected to get, at least, 25 per cent of the votes in two-thirds of the 36 States of the Federation and Abuja.

But in a Press Statement on Wednesday, signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, the PDP cited the mammoth crowd that welcomes its Presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, as a prelude to the failure that allegedly awaits the APC in 2023.

The Party also claimed that it has taken over  Buhari’s Campaign Office in Katsina, thus  signaling the collapse of APC.

President Muhammadu Buhari is from Katsina State.

Following is the full text of the statement

“The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) admonishes the failed All Progressives Congress (APC) not to bother to campaign in the 2023 general elections as the APC cannot secure the statutory 25% of votes in most States of the country.

“The mammoth crowd that greets PDP’s rallies including the recent rallies in Kano and Katsina States are clear messages to the APC that they have been rejected by the people and have no foothold in the 2023 general elections.

“The fact that Nigerians from all walks of life in Kano State, the political, commercial nerve center of the North and national melting point, defied the rain in massive show of solidarity to the PDP and our Presidential Candidate, Atiku Abubakar, underscores their determination to break through all barriers and return the PDP to power in 2023.

“The current mass exodus from the APC into the PDP as being witnessed in most States including President Muhammadu Buhari’s home State of Katsina highpoints the consensus by Nigerians that the APC has irredeemably failed and that the PDP remains the only vehicle to rescue and rebuild the country from misrule of the APC.

“The takeover of President Buhari’s campaign office by the PDP in his home Katsina State following the defection of critical APC stakeholders in the State, signals the surrender of the APC and its structure to the PDP in President Buhari’s supposed strongholds.

“Nigerians have seen through the lies and falsehood of the incompetent, rudderless, insensitive, divisive, bloodthirsty and terrorism-enabling APC that has brought nothing but misery, economic hardship, hatred, unprecedented disunity and bloodletting to our nation in the last seven years.

“Nigerians have seen the APC in its true identity; a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV); a pirate ship of inchoate sailors and strange bed fellows clobbered together for remote personal gains, not for governance and public good.

“This is more so as the APC presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu (BAT); the national leader of the failed APC government is no match to PDP Presidential Candidate, Atiku Abubakar, who has established his capacity to lead our nation out of the wood where Asiwaju and his failed APC plunged her.

“From all indications, under a credible, free, fair and transparent electoral process, the APC cannot secure the statutory 25% of votes in most States across the country.

“Our Party therefore admonishes the APC not to bother to campaign in Kano, Katsina, other States of the north and of course in other geo-political zones of the country as Nigerians have already aligned with the PDP to return our nation to the path of unity, national cohesion and economic prosperity.

“The PDP commends the former Governor of Kano State, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau and millions of other well-meaning Nigerians for their patriotism in rallying on the platform of the PDP to rescue our nation from the stranglehold of the vicious APC.

“The PDP urges all Nigerians of goodwill not to be deterred but remain hopeful and join forces on the platform of the PDP to resist the shenanigans and manipulations of the APC ahead of the 2023 general elections.”

The Presidential election will hold in February 2023.

Amnesty International Lied – DSS; Warns Peoples Gazette

DSS

By Adesina Soyooye

The Department of State Services, DSS, has dismissed as lies, from the pit of hell, a report by the Amnesty International, AI, which claimed that the Service, under this administration, engages in the abduction of innocent Nigerian citizens.

The report which was carried by an online publication, Peoples Gazette, took not a few people who know how much the Service has done to abort several high profile abductions in the country, and how much it has risked its personnel to gather information and secure the release of hundreds of abducted Nigerians.

While reacting to the publication, DSS Spokesman, Dr. Peter Afunanya, said nothing could be further from the truth.

Said the statement: “The attention of the Department of State Services, DSS, has been drawn to a false publication by an online newspaper, Peoples Gazette, in which it quoted Amnesty International (AI), as stating that SSS abduct innocent Nigerians under the Buhari regime.

“Whether reported by Peoples Gazette or Amnesty  International, the Service outrigjtly denies this misleading narrative. It does not abduct Nigerians.

“As part of its enforcement activities, the DSS arrests when, where, and if necessary. This is evidently carried out in line with democratic ideals.

“At no time has the Agency embarked on its actions without following laid down procedures in respect of obtaining warrants of arrest or orders of detention from competent legal authorities. The claim of abduction, or use of enforced disappearances, is an absolute lie and a make-up narrative designed to bring the Service to disrepute.

“The DSS is law abiding, and committed to the protection of citizens and sensitive government installations. In doing this, it will continue to discharge its mandate of intelligence collection and timely dissemination of same  to relevant action agencies and stakeholders.

“Public attention should, however, be drawn to the deliberate and determined efforts of the Publisher of Peoples Gazette, Samuel Ogundipe, to use his platform to undermine law and order. He is known to have, on several occasions, engaged in distorted publications to disinform the public. He and his cohorts are hereby warned, for the umpteenth time, to desist from these deplorable acts against the peace and security of the nation. It is time for Ogundipe and the likes to choose reason over fatuity; and patriotism over treachery. Their continous mischievous resolve to use fake news and hate speech to set the country on fire is condemnable.

“Media Practitioners in the country should rise above parochial considerations, sanitise its fold, and fish out quacks among them. The Media can also peer-review and embark on self censorship as part of achieving professionalism in the industry.

“They must reject the allure of enticement by external forces to use them to instigate violence or undermine government and its institutions. Otherwise, those who run foul of the law must be ready to face justice now or in the future.

Recall that the DSS by its intelligence gathering, had uncovered several plots to undermine and embarrass the Country. Unfortunately, a number of the information the Service gives to relevant action Agencies are ignored until they are late.

The most recent, among others, are the Abuja-Kaduna bound Train attack, and the invasion and attack on Kuje Prisons, Abuja.

Sadly no heads have rolled, the promises to punish those who neglected their duties notwithstanding. It has been business as usual.

Similarly, Net Interest Margin improved to 6.4 percent from 4.7 percent in 2021FY, due to a combination of improved yields on average earning assets and a decline in average funding cost. 2023: Obasa Urges Focus On Need For Good Governance, Not Muslim-Muslim Ticket

Mudashiru Obasa

By Akinwale Kasali

The Speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa has urged the electorate to focus on the need for better governance.

Obasa implored Nigerians to shun religious sentiments that include Muslim-Muslim or Christian-Christian tickets, and focus on the betterment of Nigerians, growth and development of the Nation at large.

Obasa gave the charge on Wednesday at the 14th Annual Hijrah Lecture organised by Lagos State House of Assembly.

Corroborating the view of the Speaker were the Guest Speakers at the event which included popular Islamic Cleric and Chief Imam of Offa, Kwara State, Sheik Muyideen Salman Husayn; Hon. Justice Abdurraheem Ahmad Sayi, a Kadi of Sharia Court of Appeal, Kwara State; and Sheikh Ishaq Mustapha Zuglool Sunuusi, Head of Academics, Daru Dawah Wal Irshad Arabic Centre, Isolo.

According Mr Speaker, even though it has been argued that religion and politics are intertwined, it has been noted that religion has never been a determinant in the development of many countries that are currently doing great.

“All over the world where democracy is being practised, it has been established that good governance is not really determined by their religions. In countries like India, Singapore, China and most of the democratic states in Asia and some other parts of the world where neither Islam nor Christianity is being practised, it is gratifying to note that good governance is seen all around them.

“Even here in Africa before the advent of both Islam and Christianity, we had good and steady democratic setting with our traditional beliefs. It is now worrisome, however, that we allow religion to dictate to us how democracy should be practised,” Obasa said.

He argued that the spiritual core of democratic governance is the obligation to serve the people with godly principles and noble objectives.

“People should understand that whoever will be fair, just and is visionary, who can look back and identify good people to form a team with, in order to achieve success is someone who should be of concern to us in a democratic state to  lead, not religion.

“There is no doubt that Nigeria is at a most precarious phase in its existence as a nation. These are indeed trying times for Nigeria and Nigerians. We should focus more on how the failure of politics and faith has compromised the unravelling of the Nigerian project.

“Therefore, at this time when Nigeria stands at its most critical juncture in history regarding next year general elections, there is a crucial call for religious bodies to deploy their collective spiritual energies in not only undermining the negative forces of nepotism and dysfunctionality, but in positively enhancing the development of Nigeria.

“Whether the political party contesting is running on Muslim-Muslim ticket or Christian-Christian ticket and otherwise, our focus should be the good intentions of the contestants. Let us not allow any politician to bamboozle us with religion as a determining factor for who we will choose as our leaders.

“In fact, as enshrined in the Constitution of Nigeria being a secular state, there is no provision for the elevation of a particular form of religion over another, let alone which one should be in charge of the government. Instead, what we have is freedom of religion,” he added.

On his part, Justice Sayi said the primary role and responsibilities of religious leaders is to teach, guide, educate and emancipate the minds of premodial sentiments like tribalism, nepotism and the rest that affect the minds.

“Message of unity and humanity should take the lead of what should come out of religious houses, whether churches or mosques. Religious leaders should know that God has created us equally and they should also know that nobody has been created superior. The first most important responsibility of pastors and Imams is to lead the people to virtue,” he said.

In his own lecture, Sheikh Sunuusi, noted that Islam urges co-habitation and co-operation with others for the benefit of the society.

“Islam says we should not cheat any other person,” he said as he punctured the arguments of those against Muslim/Muslim ticket with how situations had sprung up Christian-Christian governments in the past.

Explaining the idea behind the topic, the chairman of 14th Hijrah lecture, Hon. Adams Noheem Babatunde, said it had become imperative for religious leaders to tread softly and preach unity.

“This is not the time for teachings that would polarise us. We expect people of influence to always emphasise peace and unity at all times,” he said.

Imo: We Thrive On Accountability – Uzodimma; Promises Synergy With ANAN

Hope Uzodimma

The Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodimma has promised that his Government will continue to partner with the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN) in the interest of the society and for the benefit of mankind.

Governor Uzodimma made the promise in his remarks at the Association’s   5th Session of 2022 Mandatory Continuing Professional Development/Induction programme which took place in Owerri, the Imo State capital on Wednesday.

The theme of the three day event – August 30 – September 1, 2022  is: ‘Contemporary Development in Public Sector Accounting on Financial Management.’

Represented by the Deputy Governor,  Prof. Placid Njoku, the Governor told the Association that “accountability is the fulcrum around which the 3-R mantra of Rehabilitation, Reconstruction and Recovery of our administration revolves.”

He equally informed the audience that the distinct strides his government has recorded within short period in office in the areas of road infrastructure, health, security, agriculture, youth empowerment, industry among others “are as a result of conscious adoption of transparency and accountability.”

He then invited ANAN to “buy-in as partners in the business of government with a mission encapsulated in a multi-disciplinary emphasis in the up-bringing of well-rounded, well-blended and well-honed professionals, profound in knowledge, skillful in-practice and ethnical in conduct.”

Governor Uzodimma seized the opportunity to draw attention of the leadership of ANAN and other accounting bodies on the need for a serious work to sustain the image they have built over the years “to avoid the fact of a select criminal-minded few, no matter their status, from destroying their efforts.”

The Governor congratulated ANAN on her programme in Owerri and hoped that the 5th Session will “inculcate in her members and the newly inducted, the spirit of thorough professionalism, work ethics and values, conduct, and above all, the attitude of patriotism and selfless service to the society.”

He expressed gladness that ANAN chose Imo State to host the programme ignoring the false orchestrations of insecurity challenges against the State.

The Governor described the choice of Imo for the 2022 MCPD as a clear demonstration of ANAN’s appreciation of the conscious efforts of his government to continue to protect lives and property of the citizens and in creating an enabling environment for businesses to thrive in Imo State.

In his address at the occasion, the President and Chairman of the Council of ANAN,  Rev. Canon (Prof.) Benjamin Chuka Osisioma noted that “ANAN is a premium brand of choice with high National and International recognition,” and that “members are imbued with high quality professional knowledge and skills.”

He equally explained that the Mandatory Continuing Professional Development (MCPD) Programme is a statutory training which the members are required to attend, at least once in a year.

He reminded his members that “as digitally-inclined professional accounting organization,” their drive is “to consistently build future-ready accountants.”

“Dynamism in accounting, business operations and the global economy makes the applications of digital technologies in accounting inevitable.  Your competence and relevance are core areas you should maximally develop for continuous viability in your careers,” he said.

Prof Osisioma congratulated the newly inducted ANAN members and urged them to always ensure quality service delivery in all their engagements.

In his welcome address,  the Chairman Imo State Branch and South East geo-political Zone of ANAN,  Sir Chukwuma Uchehara described the theme of the lecture as apt.

His words: “At the end of the deliberations, professionals will be more armed with the nitty gritties of the job to tackle the dynamism, inherent in financial matters, including but not limited to public sector financial management and standards, revenue generation and risk management in the public and private sectors.”

He expressed gratitude to God that normalcy has returned to Imo State and thanked Governor Uzodimma for his “dexterity and pro-activeness in dealing with the hydra-headed  issues of insecurity challenges.”

He also extended his gratitude to the President and Chairman of Council for considering Imo State as a safe home for the MCPD 2022 programme.

In his vote of thanks, the Chief Executive Officer of ANAN, Dr. Kayode Olusola Fasua also congratulated the newly inducted members, the organizers of the programme, the President and Chairman of Council and the Chairman of Imo State Branch for a successful hosting.

He specifically commended the efforts of Governor Uzodimma in making Imo State safe and secure.

He remarked: “We hardly expected a safe and secure environment to successfully host this 2022 MPCD in Imo State, going by the media hype on the security situation in Imo State.”

Dr Fasua also thanked the Deputy Governor for coming to flag-off the ceremony on behalf of the Governor and by so doing, encouraging ANAN on the need for professionalism.

Activist Ann-Kio Briggs Lashes Tinubu, Says He Is Shameless To Have Visited Jonathan

Ann-Kio Briggs

By Akinwale Kasali

Human Rights Activist and foremost Environmentalist, Ann-Kio Briggs, has lashed All Progressives Congress, APC, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu for having the audacity to visit former President, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan and seek his support in actualizing his 2023 Presidential ambition.

Briggs described the former Lagos State Governor and APC National Leader as shameless and lacks integrity.

The Environmentalist noted that Tinubu should be ashamed of himself for consulting Jonathan over his Presidential race a few years after heaping verbal attacks and insults on the former President and his wife, Patience, because he was a minority President from Ijaw in the Niger Delta.

She added that Tinubu was one of the opponents of the Jonathan administration, who mobilised opposition against him and called him all sorts of derogatory names.

“Politics in Nigeria is a filthy game about personalities, not about the people, if not, Tinubu should be too ashamed to visit Jonathan and sit down on the chair in his house.

“This is a man (Tinubu) that cannot differentiate between politics of ideology and shameful politics. They hauled insults at him (Jonathan), they hauled insults at his wife.

“They constructed effigies to mock Jonathan; they organised ‘Occupy Nigeria’ and paraded with coffins and did all kinds things against Jonathan. Today, they are shamelessly visiting Jonathan, sitting on his chair in his house.”

Showering encomiums on the humility, maturity and elder statesman attitude of Jonathan, Briggs  described Jonathan as “a kind-hearted man and Ijaw son” who had been vindicated on many fronts, stressing that he had acknowledged while in office that he was the most insulted and abused president.

The Niger Delta born activist said that Tinubu and his ilk should realise that the oil and gas resources in Jonathan’s Niger Delta remained the sources of their feeding and wellbeing of Nigeria, adding that “after all the insults, calling him clueless, they are now visiting Jonathan and sitting in his house.”

She had earlier on her  Facebook page, expressed similar views, saying that all anti-Jonathan elements, including the APC Presidential candidate, would have their payback time.

She stated that Tinubu could not hate Ijaw people in 2015 when Jonathan lost his re-election bid and hope to achieve victory in the forthcoming Presidential poll in Ijaw land.

Briggs further said, “One by one, from top to bottom, they all go back to Jonathan to receive their shovel of hot coal on their heads. I will tell the APC/Tinubu for free that if Ijaws vote for him, it will not be at a level for him to claim victory in Ijaw nation. He cannot hate Ijaws in 2015 and expect Ijaws to vote for him in 2023. Jonathan is an Ijaw son and man, but all Ijaws are not Jonathan.

“Go and collect your debt from Buhari, Jonathan no get vote for you inside our creeks, swamps and mangroves. Ijaw youths are not going to eat the corn and groundnut you are offering, we have enough plantain, fish and all the oil and gas we need to import all we want to eat.”

Peter Obi Challenges FG To Name Financiers Of Terrorism

0
Peter Obi

By Akinwale Kasali

As the spate of insecurity keeps on lingering in the country, the Labour Party, LP, Presidential Candidate, Peter Obi has challenged the President Muhammadu Buhari administration to name the financiers of terrorism in the country.

Obi said it was necessary for the Federal Government to publicly name terrorism financiers and oil thieves across the country and save the country the bloodshed and dwindling economic fortunes.

The former Anambra State Governor said that the  call had become imperative to ensure there were no ‘sacred cows’ in the fight against terrorism, anti-corruption and economic sabotage across the country.

Obi took to his Twitter Handle on Social Media Tuesday August 31, 2022, adding that it was important for the  Government to rise to the occasion.

It would be recalled that months back,  the Federal Government had said the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit uncovered 96 financiers of terrorism as well as the 424 associates and supporters of the financiers.

Announcing the development, the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, on February 3, 2022, while reeling out the administration’s achievements, said the fraud unit unmasked 123 companies and 33 bureau de change operators linked with terrorism in the country.

However, Mohammed did not give the names of the sponsors and companies linked with terrorism.

He said, “For its part, the analysis by the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit, in 2020-2021, revealed 96 financiers of terrorism in Nigeria, 424 associates/supporters of the financiers, involvement of about 123 companies and 33 bureaux de change, in addition to identifying 26 suspected bandits/kidnappers and seven co-conspirators. The analysis has resulted in the arrest of 45 suspects who will soon face prosecution and seizure of assets.”

Mohammed added that from the NFIU’s analysis of tax evasion and tax avoidance linked to corruption, the agency identified N3.0tn in VAT and N3.7tn in Withholding Tax due to the government.

“The NFIU has also sent 1,165 intelligence reports on cases of corruption, money laundering and other serious offences to 27 domestic agencies for investigation, prosecution and asset recovery,” the minister said.

He revealed that on terrorism financing, the NFIU had intelligence exchanges on Boko Haram, ISWAP, banditry, kidnapping, and others with 19 countries.

“During the same period, 2020-2021, the organisation returned fraudulently-obtained funds totaling US$103.7m, 3,000 Pound Sterling; 7,695 Singapore Dollar and 1,091 Euros to 11 countries of victims who came into the country,” Mohammed had said.

Obi wrote, “I am struck and intrigued by the news report linking “highly placed” Nigerians to oil theft. Same has been the case with financing insurgency and Boko Haram. When will FGN summon the political will to publicly name such persons?

“In the National Interest, there should be no sacred cows”, Obi Stated.

How SP Omoni, Police Spokesman, Died In His Sleep After Birthday Party

0
Nnamdi Omoni - Police SP

By Charles Igbo

Nnamdi Omoni, a Superintendent of Police, until recently, the longest serving Spokesperson of the Rivers State Police Command, went to bed on Monday night, presumably, hail and hearty. But Tuesday morning, he was found dead in his bedroom. Omoni died in his sleep.

He had celebrated his birthday on Friday, in company with colleagues, and family and friends. And just three days later, he was gone.

For five years, he was the popular face of the Rivers State Police Command, due to his sense of duty. He mixed well with the members of the public, especially, Journalists.

He held that position until his promotion to the rank of an SP recently. That was when he was posted to Elimgba Police Division, Obio/Akpor  Local Government Area, as the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, and was succeeded by Grace Iringe-Koko as the new Police Spokesman.

A devastated Iringe-Koko confirmed Omoni’s sudden death to Journalists, but was yet to issue a statement on it until the approval of the Police Commissioner.

Even though the cause of his death is yet unknown, not a few people suspect cardiac arrest.

Recall that Omoni’s Deputy when he was the Police Spokesman, Christian Udogu, also died suddenly in 2021. Udogu, an internationally celebrated Volleyball player, suddenly died while watching television with family in his living room. He suddenly complained of chest pain, then slumped and died.

Omoni hailed from Rivers State.
