Mamu: Outcome Of Investigation, So Far, Mind- Boggling – DSS; Warns Public Against Comments

0
Tukur Mamu - Bandits Negotiator

By Adesina Soyooye

The Department of State Services, DSS, said on Sunday, that the outcome of its investigation, so far, on Tukur Mamu, the self- appointed hostage negotiator, is mind-boggling.

The Service’s Spokesperson, Dr Peter Afunanya, in a statement, also warned the public against making comments on the arrest of, and investigation of Mamu by the Service.

Mamu, the Publisher of the Desert Herald is, also, the Media Consultant to Sheikh Ahmad Abubakar Gumi, a Medical Doctor-turned Islamic Scholar.

In the wake of the embarrassing March 28, 2022, attack on the Abuja-Kaduna bound Train by terrorists who killed eight  passengers and took 68 of them hostage, Mamu became a self-appointed negotiator. He turned the intermediary between the families of the hostages and the terrorists.

He is the one who gives information on the release of the hostages, the state and status of the hostages and the state of the mind of the terrorists. The abductors have been releasing the hostages in batches. However, 23 of them are still held captive.

Each of the released hostage always visited Mamu’s office to thank him for his role in their release.

However, on Tuesday, September 6, 2022, things turned awry for Mamu when he was arrested by INTERPOL at the Cairo International Airport, Egypt, on his way to Saudi Arabia. He was in the company of his two wives and one other.

After interrogation, the INTERPOL sent him back to Nigeria. He arrived the Kano International Airport on Wednesday, September 7, into the waiting hands of Operatives of the DSS.

The DSS was to explain that the Service arrested Mamu on the request of the Military and other Security Agencies in connection with a critical security investigation. The Services Operatives later raided his residence, office, and those of a couple of his relatives and his inlaw who, allegedly, is also in the custody of the DSS, just like Mamu.

On Friday, September 9, at a Religious event,  Sheikh Gumi attacked, verbally, the DSS, and accused them of being terrorists considering the manner in which Operatives of the Service arrested Mamu.

Condemning the DSS in strong language, Gumi said:

“Nigeria’s constitution did not say you can arrest someone without any proven evidence criminalising him and without charging him to court. You cannot arrest and keep him in detention arbitrarily.

“Take him to court to face trial. Keeping him in custody despite being a family man was just to intimidate him. This intimidation is also terrorism.

“Arresting people unjustly is also terrorism; just like the terrorists do by going to somebody’s house to kidnap him.

“It’s not about Tukur Mamu. You all know that whenever they arrest innocent people, I always talk, not to talk of someone that I know and I’m only advising the Government to release him so that we can apologize to him to forget what happened.”

But reacting, apparently, to Gumi’s acidic submission, in the statement it  released on Sunday,  the DSS noted:

“The DSS has followed, with keen observation, overzealous comments by sections of the public in view of issues relating to the arrest and investigation of Tukur Mamu.

“The Service wishes to state that it is not distracted with some of the skewed narratives pervading the media space.

“Instead, it requests to be left alone to concentrate on the ongoing investigations, the outcomes of which have remained mindboggling

“Meanwhile, the Service will cease further comments on the subject matter since the Court will determine its course.

“Consequently, the public is hereby enjoined to desist from making unguarded utterances and await the court proceedings.”

During the search of Mamu’s residence, the Service said it recovered large amounts of money in different currencies and denominations, just as it also said Military accoutrements were recovered.

However, Mamu’s office said the Military accoutrements belong to Mamu’s son who is a Navy Officer.

2023: SDP Presidential Candidate Says Buhari Failed Because He Was Virtually Absent In All Key Sectors

0

By Akinwale Kasali

The Social Democratic Party, SDP, Presidential Candidate, Adewole Adebayo, said the failure of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration was because he was virtually absent in key sectors which made it impossible for his Government to achieve any success.

Adebayo said the dwindling economy and fortunes of the Nation are the failure of the administration to stabilize the Naira. He promised to make the stabilization of the Naira his main priority if voted as the President in 2023.

He said he would not promise that Naira would become equal to Dollar like President Buhari in 2015, who made the promise that never manifested, but would ensure that the value of the country’s currency stops dwindling.

He spoke on Sunday while inaugurating his campaign office in Ibadan, Oyo State Capital.

“SDP won’t make any promise when campaign starts, but plans. Please take note of when campaign starts. Just as it was done during the time of Awolowo. We will give you plans that have timelines, costs, objectives and the people that are going to implement them.

“We are going to have a stable currency. I am not saying one naira will become one dollar. No. We will keep the same exchange rate during our tenure and we will bring inflation to a single digit.

“I will rate the present Government led by General Muhamadu Buhari absent because it does not show up for the examination at all. If you have a generator now, it shows the government has failed in the area of power. If your child is an undergraduate and he is at home, that means the government has not performed.

“If you are relying on ( Sunday) Igboho and other people to help chase bandits, it shows that government has not performed. If you are unemployed or you are a pensioner and your money has not been paid to you that means the government has not performed.

“Not as if they performed poorly but they are not there at all. We are going to set up a proper government that knows how to render services. We are going to put a round peg in a round hole. ”

Adebayo added that he would make the country to work effectively by implementing programmes mandated by the Constitution.

He said he would do everything to banish poverty and insecurity which have continued to ravage every part of the country.

“Insecurity, economy sabotage, high rate of unemployment and inflation, mismanagement of the budget and disunity are the problems we are having today. What I will do differently is to implement the programme which is constitutionally mandatory in chapter 2 of our constitution.

“Fundamentally, implementation of state policy and to implement the policy of the Social Democratic Party out of which we have drawn out two things which include a farewell to poverty and security.

“We are also going to make sure that our politics is not a money bag politics so that we can make diverse people who are talented people who will come from different parts of the country.

“We are going to have a united front of the country with social investment into education, health housing, food production, employment and general infrastructure. These are the things we are going to do differently.”

Don’t Convert God’s House, Pulpit, To Political Soap Box, Uzodimma Tells Clergy; Advises Against  Partisan Politics

Hope Uzodimma his Wife and Bishops

Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has advised the Church to be wary of partisan politics just as he admonished the clergy to resist the temptation of converting God’s houses and pulpits as soap boxes for political campaigns.

The Governor spoke on Sunday at the Holy Trinity Catholic Cathedral Orlu in Imo State on the ocassion of the opening session of the second plenary of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN).

In what looks like a reminder to the Church and the clergy that their roles are cut out for them, Governor Uzodimma noted that they need to preserve the norms that make their moral authority inviolable.

His words: “Your Graces and Lordships, permit me to also point out, with every sense of responsibility, that I do not think it is right for some members of the clergy to convert God’s house and the pulpit to the soap box for campaigns for their preferred candidates or parties in an election season or anytime in the election cycle.

“Sadly, this has become the norm in many of our churches. My worry is that if the Church drags itself into partisan politics, then it would have lost its moral authority to pontificate because it has made itself an interested party.

“Indeed, the church cannot be in the moral pedestal to preach against certain conducts of the society if it has not gone through purification by purging itself of those who are diminishing its authority.

“I believe that true sanctification can only come when the church presents itself as a living testament of good, impartial and temperate conduct. It is my sincere hope that one of your resolutions from this conference will be to condemn members of the clergy who use their positions and the church for political ends.

“In the same vein, some Priests under your watch have through inciting sermons also taken it upon themselves to inflame passions, instead of abating them. In addition, I have noticed with dismay that some members of the clergy have also become open canvassers for separatism and secession.

“Sadly, they also use the sacred pulpit to do this. This should not be the case. The need for the church to remain on high moral standards includes abstaining from fiery comments that seem to highlight and promote our differences rather than on the things that unite us.”

Governor Uzodimma pleaded with the Catholic Bishops to take a critical look at the concerns he raised as they begin their meeting, noting that for years since the birth of CBCN, their position has always been taken seriously by the society.

He added: “This conference is holding today because Nigeria, though beset by insecurity in some parts, is not in a state of war. No matter the imperfections of our republic and democracy, we are still better off in a united country. To the glory of God, we have an increasing number of political leaders who are committed to addressing these imperfections, especially as it concerns equity and justice, so we can build the perfect nation we all desire.

“And I can assure you that it is only a matter of time before this is achieved. On their part, Church leaders should continue to promote the unity of the country and not its division.

“I wholly understand that priests have the right and duty to hold our leaders and governments accountable, and nobody will ever stop a priest from condemning the ills in the society, including bad governance and corruption. My position should not be misinterpreted as an attempt to rob them of this moral authority which they have enjoyed since the beginning of time.

“I, therefore, appeal to your Graces and Lordships to bring up these concerns of mine in the course of your deliberations during the conference. It is important that you reaffirm the Church’s neutrality on political matters and, thereafter, caution the priests not to dabble into partisan politics. Above all, they should also desist from fanning the embers of disunity in the country.”

The Governor reminded the Bishops that contrary to the false information they were fed with on social media, they are now in a better position to know that peace has actually returned to Orlu and that the people are going about their businesses without molestation.

“Some of you must have heard so many stories about the security situation in Imo State and Orlu, in particular. I am glad that you have come here and you have seen things for yourselves, and you can now attest to the fact that normalcy has been restored in Orlu. I now leave you to judge for yourselves what the true situation of things is.”

While welcoming them to Orlu for the second plenary of the CBCN meeting, Governor Uzodimma said:

“It isremarkable that this conference, which was instituted almost 60 years ago, has now grown into a credible platform where the leadership of the clergy can hold dispassionate discussions on issues of national, and, sometimes, global importance. And, to your credit, at the end of each conference, you always come up with a communiqué in which you proffer solutions to the issues discussed. I truly admire and commend your steadfastness in this regard.

“Let me reiterate that anytime the Catholic Bishops of Nigeria meet, the nation waits with bathed breath because your resolutions are always logical, rational and audacious. To your credit, your resolutions are usually widely circulated and well–received, and would continue to resonate in many quarters for weeks and months to come. Thus, one can rightly say that since 1958 when this body was formed it has become the conscience of the nation, speaking truth to power and seeking peaceful resolutions to thorny issues. The evidence on ground therefore suggests that this body will continue to act as a moral compass in the affairs of Nigeria.”

He said he noted with gladness that the programme for this year’s conference includes intensive prayers for peace in the nation.

“This should be expected when the leaders of the church meet in this formal setting. Prayer, as we know, is the key to all challenges because it never fails to bring solutions. So, I commend the spirit of prayers as outlined in the conference programme.”

Continuing the Governor said: “I believe, however, that as spiritual leaders, we must not only be seen to be praying for peace in the country; we should also be seen to be advocates of peace and unity in real life. We have a huge responsibility, therefore, to also do those things that will truly contribute to national unity and progress. This way, our prayers would be seen to be consistent with our conducts.

“Often when we talk about corrupt and ineffective leadership in the land, Church leaders should not delude themselves that they are excluded. This is why it is important that the church must remain on a moral high ground to be able to preach on effective and honest leadership for the temporal authority. It goes without saying, therefore, that this all important body can only continue to effectively discharge that sacred duty of serving as a moral compass for the nation if it refuses to be encumbered by internal contradictions and outright partisanship.”

He congratulated the Chairman of the CBCN, His Grace, Archbishop Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji and his team for the choice of Orlu as the venue of this year’s conference.

Governor Uzodimma also used the conference to thank members of the clergy for their relentless prayers for peace in Imo State.

He said: “In spite of the efforts of our security agencies to restore peace in the state, I know for a fact that it took some Divine intervention to secure and protect our state from the evil machinations of our detractors. I have no doubt that this miracle was made possible by the prayers of religious leaders, including the lay faithful. I say this because I am a firm believer in the sovereignty of the Lord as emphasised in Psalm 127: 2 which says ‘Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labour in vain, and unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain.”

Governor Uzodimma spoke about himself as a baptised Catholic, who has every respect not only for the Church, but for the Priests and the entire leadership.

“As my Spiritual fathers, I draw a lot of inspiration from you, individually and collectively. Thus, I would be sad to witness anything that tends to weaken or erode your authority and reverence.

“Finally, I am sure that the current leadership of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria will work harder to strengthen its arms to make them responsive to the yearnings of the faithful. Going by your programmes, I am also hopeful that you will address some of the contending and contemporary issues in our country today. As always, I have no doubt that your goal is to make Nigeria a better place not only for Catholics, but for every Nigerian.”

Earlier in his opening address, Archbishop Ugorji noted that some of the issues that the Conference will deliberate upon include; insecurity, the forth coming general election, corruption in the country, unemployment, youth restiveness and general affairs in the Catholic Church.

In his remarks as Chairman of the occasion, Dr. ABC Orjiakor among other things pleaded with the Catholic leadership to help secure family lives in the society today that is being threatened by divorce.

Orjiakor further admonished them to devote their time to praying fervently for the nation so as to overcome most of the things plaguing her currently even as he solicited a healthier relationship between the bishops and the Laity.

Goodwill messages also came from the Primate of the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, Archbishop Henry Ndukuba who was represented by the Anglican  Archbishop of  Owerri Ecclesiastical Province, Bishop David Onuoha and from the President of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).

Earlier at the Mass, the Cathedral auditorium was filled with the high and might from Orlu and beyond.

Mass Burial For Unidentified Corpses In Kogi

Federal Medical Centre Lokoja

By Ayodele Oni

Some people whose relations are missing and cannot trace whether they are dead or alive, may not be able to find them, following resolve of Kogi state government to bury

 130 unclaimed dead bodies.

The dead bodies were interred last Saturday at a public cementry in Lokoja, the state capital.

It was learnt that the deceased persons are victims of accidents, robbery and kidnapping, who have been deposited at the Federal Medical Centers, Lokoja for several months without families or relations claiming their remains.

Speaking during the mass burial of the deceased, the general manager, Kogi State Sanitation and Waste Management Board, Mrs Arokoyo Elizabeth said the agency is backed by law to ensure the environment is safe for habitation, stressing that, the dead bodies have stayed too long in the hospital.

She explained that the dead bodies were brought to the mortuary by the Nigeria Police Force and Federal Road Safety Corps, (FRSC).

According to her, many announcements had been made via various media organizations for the bodies to be claimed by family members or relations, but all proved abortive.

She reiterated the state government’s commitment to ensuring that, the environment is safe for people to leave.

“All the people evacuating and burying these bodies have been sanitized. Just like I said earlier, we have made several announcements on radio, television and other media about these unclaimed bodies.

“But as I speak to you, nothing was heard from family members, relations, and friends of these corpses.

“Most of the bodies are victims of accidents, kidnapping or robbery which were brought by the Police and Road Safety.

“So they have to be buried because they have been in the mortuary for a long time without anybody coming for them.”

Falana: New INEC Commissioners’ List Is Constitutionally Defective

0

By Ayodele Oni

Lagos lawyer and Senior Advocate, Femi Falana has joined those condemning recent nominees for Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC) job as commissioners.

Falana, speaking in his capacity as chairman, Alliance on Service Covid 19 and Beyond (ASCAB)  described the List of REC Nominees sent to the Senate for approval by the president as constitutional defective and violates binding court decision.

In a statement at the weekend, the Senior Advocate pointed out that President Mohamadu Buhari failed to consult constitutionally recognized stakeholders before compiling the list.

According to him, it has been practice since 2015 that President Buhari consulted with the Council of State whenever he wanted to appoint the Chairman and members of the  INEC including Resident Electoral Commissioners in strict compliance with the provisions of Section 154(3) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999.

“On each occasion, the President consulted the Council of State before submitting the names of nominees to the Senate for confirmation in line with Section 154(1) of the Constitution.

“However for some undisclosed reasons, the President has forwarded the nominations of 14 persons for confirmation as Resident Electoral Commissioners without any prior consultation with the Council of State.

“Apart from the constitutional infraction, the list of the nominees has been challenged on the ground that some of them are card carrying members of the ruling party.

“At least two other nominees are alleged to be under investigation for serious electoral malpractice. Instead of subjecting the nominees to integrity test,:the Federal Government has dismissed such grave allegations with a wave of the hand.

“Having repeatedly assured the Nigerian people that the Administrators will support the Independent National Electoral Commission to conduct credible elections in 2023, we call on President Buhari to withdraw the controversial list from the Senate and ensure that the nominees are investigated by relevant security agencies.

“After security clearance the President is advised to comply with section 154(3) of the Constitution by consulting the Council of State with respect to the qualification and competence of the nominees.

“It is after the consultation that the names of the nominees that are qualified should be presented to the Senate for confirmation.”

Falana also advised the President to be gender sensitive on the list citing the judgment delivered by the Federal High Court on April 10, 2022 in the case of Women Empowerment and Legal Aid & Ors v Attorney-General of the Federation (Suit No FHC/ABJ/CS/ 2021) wherein the Honourable Justice Donatus Okorowo ordered the federal government to comply with the 35 per cent affirmative action for women.

He stated that going by the judgement, women should be allowed to occupy 35 per cent of all appointments.

“Since the judgment is binding on all authorities and persons in Nigeria pursuant to section 287 of the Constitution, the President should ensure that the women in the list of nominees should not be less than 35 percent.”

ASUU Strike: Ngige Drags Union To Court Over Lingering Strike

ASUU President and Ngige

By Akinwale Kasali

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige and the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, are set for a show down likely to escalate the lingering strike as the  Minister for Labour and Productivity has dragged ASUU to Court.

The former Anambra State Governor has dragged ASUU to the National Industrial Court of Nigeria, Abuja, over the prolonged strike by the Union.

In a leaked letter written to the Chief Registrar of the court, dated September 8, 2022, Ngige alleged the refusal of ASUU to call off its strike which began February 14, 2022, and thereby, asked the Court to accelerate hearing on the matter in order to bring the dispute between the Union and the Government to an end.

The letter titled ‘Forwarding of a Referral Instrument in the Trade Dispute Between the FG/Federal Ministry of Education and ASUU,

partly reads:

“Please find attached three original copies of a Referral Instrument regarding the trade dispute between the FG /Federal Ministry of Education and ASUU for adjudication by the National Industrial Court of Nigeria.

“The Referral Instrument is raised in fine with powers vested on the Honourable Minister of Labour and Employment by trade dispute resolution mechanisms and the provision of Section 17 of the Trade Dispute Act. CAP. T8 Laws of the Fderation of Nigeria (LFN), 2004.

“In view of the fact that ASUU members have been on strike since February 14, 2222 and have refused to cull off the action despite apprehension of same, it would he appreciated if this dispute is given an accelerated hearing in order to bring the dispute to an end.”

ASUU recently extended its strike indefinitely.

PDP Should Clear Members Of Fraud Allegations, Rather Than Attack Audit Firm – Kwara APC

0

By Ayodele Oni

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara state has taken a swipe at opposition People’s Democratic Party, (PDP) for not being able to distinguish between a statutory audit and forensic audit before criticizing government.

APC in its reaction to weekend condemnation by PDP of government contracting out audit of state account to an unrecognized firm, described the opposition of ignorant of government activities.

PDP in a statement, signed by the Publicity Secretary, Tunji Moronfoye described the transaction as “another unfortunate shady transaction perpetuated by the Kwara state All Progressives Congress (APC) regime, led by Mal. Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq.

“According to the results of our legal query undertaken at the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), it was discovered that the audit firm purportedly “hired” by the incompetent and mediocre regime, SSAC Advisory and Proffessional limited, is an inactive or dormant firm.

“This is according to a CAC signed report. Simply put; the company has not been making returns, declaring its income or paying any taxes.

“This is the same firm that the Mal. Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq regime, purportedly hired to carry out a “forensic audit” for Kwara state.

“Following the evidence, we hereby put it to the Mal. Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq led APC party regime, that there was no forensic audit carried out between the years 2011-2019 as claimed by the regime.

APC publicity secretary Alhaji Tajudeen Aro, in a statement, said the fact that the PDP could not distinguish between a statutory audit which the Auditor General carries out as a matter of duty, and a forensic audit, which the Governor as Chief Executive, or the Executive Council can commission on suspicion of any fraud across government agencies, testifies to why the state was in such a big mess under their regime.

“For example, the Federal Government has repeatedly commissioned Forensic and Process audits of many of its agencies, including the NNPC, NPA, NIMASA etc.

“These audits were not necessarily carried out by the Office of Auditor General. We aver that the PDP is suffering from crass ignorance in saying that the forensic audit should have been carried out or commissioned by the Auditor General.

“Which law stated that? None. It is a claim built on pitiable ignorance by those who often beat their chest about being well-educated.

“The firm contracted to do the job has past and current engagements with the Federal Government, State Governments, private firms, and international agencies.

“Certainly these bodies could not have missed out or overlooked the issues of the firm being up to date in what is required of it as a consultancy firm and a registered business.

“Infact, the Federal Bureau of Public Procurement has issued an IRR to this firm for 2022, meaning that they are fully compliant to carry out work even for the Federal Government.

“We urge the PDP to limit its ignorance to its circles of hangers-on, rather than advertise its incompetence and arrogance to the whole world.

“We find it rather shameful that the PDP could in fact hang its infantile claim on a firm purportedly having an ‘inactive’ status on a website whose currency or accuracy the CAC customers do not have power over.

“Any reasonable person ought to know what a firm’s bonafides with CAC and other statutory body entail.

“Finally, we advise the key characters in PDP to prepare themselves for the grave consequences of their sheer abuse of office, instead of fooling around with laughable claims and diversionary tactics.

“Furthermore, in the interest of the good people of Kwara State, we also advise PDP to address the substance of the report which reveals substantial fraud and misapplication of funds, rather than chase shadows.”

Crisis: PDP Hawks Bay for Wike’s Head

0

By Chidi Levi

The crisis rocking the People’s Democratic Party, PDP may,  in a few days, take a turn for the worst unless the Party’s Presidential Candidate and former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, reins in hawks within the Party who have concluded plans to push for the expulsion of Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike and dissolution of the State’s Executive Chapter of the Party should the Governor continue with his war of attrition against the PDP.

The Plot Against Wike

A member of the PDP’s National Working Committee, NWC, told this magazine at the weekend that the majority of the NWC members are tired of Wike’s antics and having tolerated him enough, will come all out for him soon.

“If he refuses to budge after NWC’s reconciliation visit to him this week, we will deal with the Wike question once and for all. He cannot be bigger than the Party, and nobody is.

“If Wike continues to carry on as if he owns the PDP, and as if the PDP cannot survive without him if he continues to talk down on everyone and continues to demand the impossible, we will have no option than wield the big stick”, the NWC member said.

The Magazine gathered that while some NWC members and other stakeholders of the Party prefer suspension some others, especially hot heads, are pushing for Wike’s outright expulsion and dissolution of the State Working Committee of the party.

“Suspension of Wike and hijacking of the Rivers PDP structure from him via dissolution of State’s Chapter of the Party are seriously being considered. “A strong message has to be sent to other members, including Governors supporting Wike to the effect that nobody can hold PDP to ransom no matter their position”, a chieftain of the party from the North who was also a former Senator further told the magazine.

The Hawks Woo Amaechi

Multiple Party sources, also, informed the magazine that Wike’s predecessor and the immediate past Transport Minister, Chibuike Amaechi is currently being wooed into the Party to hand Rivers’ PDP structure to him if Wike is suspended.

Amaechi, a two-term PDP Governor, was among the Party’s Governors who rebelled against it, worked against the re-election of former President Goodluck Jonathan and eventually pulled out to join forces with the then fledgeling APC to oust the PDP from power in 2015.

Following APC and Muhammadu Buhari’s victory, Amaechi was appointed Transport Minister but resigned in May this year to contest for APC’s 2023 Presidential ticket.

Since losing to Bola Tinubu, Amaechi has remained disinterested in APC affairs. Though a leader of the party in Rivers, APC has gone extinct in the State as thousands of supporters and members, including his core loyalists, have defected to the PDP following his loss of the APC presidential ticket.

PDP hawks baying for Wike’s head, the magazine learnt, believe that Amaechi’s re-entry into the party will drastically dilute the Governor’s influence in River’s politics as well as in the State PDP.

Atiku is Aware of Wike’s Importance in PDP

Meanwhile,  there are strong indications that Atiku is not favourably disposed to the expulsion of Wike or the hijacking of the Rivers PDP structures from him.

According to sources close to the former VP, he does not want the PDP to go into the 2023 elections a divided house.

Said one of the sources: “Our Presidential candidate is an experienced politician who knows the implication of a national party such as the PDP going into a Presidential election a divided house. He is therefore not in support of any extreme measure against Wike”

Another source puts it this way: “Atiku is aware that Wike is not a pushover, Atiku knows the incalculable damage Wike can do to the success of the party in next year’s Presidential election if provoked further, and above all, he knows that Wike’s insistence that it’s against national balance and cohesion for the PDP’s Presidential Candidate and National Chairman to come from the North hence he has mandated the NWC members to prostrate and beg Wike if need be during their reconciliation visit to Port Harcourt”

Why Ayu Survived

It was gathered that the National Executive Committee, NEC, of the party was on the verge of sacking the National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu last week to placate Wike but attention was, at the last minute, drawn to a provision of the PDP Constitution which would have been violated and further push the party deeper into crisis by his sack hence it was resolved that the Board of Trustees (BoT) Chairman, Walid Jubril be replaced by a Southerner in the interim while a full-blown convention will be held immediately after the 2023 General elections to re-arrange the NWC offices, including the National Chairman’s position.

Wike’s War and the 2027 Connection

The party slipped into crisis following the May 28, 2022, Presidential Primary which the River State Governor lost to Atiku. Matters came to a head when Atiku sidetracked the PDP Committee’s recommendation of Wike as his Running Mate to pick the Delta State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa.

And contrary to his pre-primary pledge to support whoever emerged as the candidate of the party if he didn’t win, Wike, portraying himself as the voice of the South in the PDP, has withheld support for the Atiku/Okowa ticket, insisting that the Party’s National Chairman, Senator Ayu, from Benue State must quit his position for a Southerner.

The Governor, last week, dismissed Walid Jubril’s resignation as the BoT Chairman, insisting that nothing short of Ayu’s exit will placate him, his supporters and Southern Nigeria.

There are, however, insinuations that having failed to clinch the PDP 2023 Presidential ticket, Wike is already preparing for the 2027 Presidential election hence his insistence on Ayu’s exit to pave the way to a pliant Chairman from the South who he will instal and who he hopes will hand over the Party’s 2027 presidential ticket to him.

The Rivers State Governor is supported in his feud with the PDP by the Governors of Benue( Samuel Ortom), Oyo( Seyi Makinde) Abia ( Okezie Ikpeazu) and Enugu( Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi).

Uzodimma Seeks Inclusion Of More Imo Citizens In FG’s Empowerment Programme

0
Hope Uzodinma

The Governor of Imo State, Sen Hope Uzodimma has solicited the inclusion of more citizens from Imo State who should benefit from the Federal government’s different social empowernment programmes.

He did on Saturday when he joined the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Hajia Sadiya Umar Farouq who was in the State to flag-off various social empowerment programmes organised by her ministry for Imo citizens.

While commending the Minister and her team for finding Imo State worthy of the social empowernment programmes, Governor Uzodimma used the opportunity to make case for the addition of more Imo citizens as beneficiaries in the different programmes of the ministry which the Minister acceded to.

Speaking at the Sam Mbakwe Hall of Concord Hotel Owerri, venue of the social empowernment programmes where thousands of poor and vulnerable persons gathered for the event, the Governor saluted Hajia Farouq and her team for being passionate about the programmes, an initiative of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Governor Uzodimma informed that it is the level of successes recorded by Hajia Farouq in her Ministry at the national level that propelled him to establish a similar Ministry in Imo State.

The Govenror said: “Everything about government, every promise and every expectation starts and ends with the Ministry which is anchored on the people.”

He maintained that the Federal Government led by President Buhari and his own government in Imo State are anchored on service to the people,  especially the vulnerable groups among whom are the poorest of the poor and the physically-challenged.

He therefore pledged the support of his government to various programmes of the Ministry and to Imo people who are in dire need of such assistance, noting that it was in recognition of the value of the programmes that the 3-R government empowered 15,000 youths last year with N250,000 each.

Governor Uzodimma said the National Home Grown feeding programme is “one of the most noble programmes Nigerians have ever seen and experienced because it accommodates the interest of our children who are encouraged to go to school and their diet.”

He expressed the gratitude of his government and the people of Imo State to President Buhari for such laudable programmes that have gone a long way in alleviating the sufferings of the vulnerable group and the poorest of the poor in Nigeria.

To the beneficiaries, the Governor pleaded with them to make judicious use of the money given to them no matter how small they may think it is.

In her address, Hajiya Farouq said she was in Imo with her team to flag-off the programmes’ grant for vulnerable groups, a project which was introduced in 2020, first as grant for rural women to sustain the social inclusion agenda of President Buhari’s administration of lifting 10 million Nigerians out of poverty in 10 years.
