Ekiti: Trouble In Fayose’s Backyard As PDP Ado LG,  Asks His Son To Step Down From House Of Reps Race

Fayose and his Son

By Ayodele Oni

People’s Democratic Party, (PDP) members in Ado Local Government in Ekiti State has asked son of former Governor Ayo Fayose, who is a House of Representatives candidate, to withdraw from the race.

Fayose had presented his son as a candidate for Ekiti Central Constituency one seat at the Green Chamber against next year’s election.

A statement by the Publicity Secretary, PDP Ado Local Government, Babatope Ogun, said the decision was taken at a meeting of the Party’s Executive.

“Arising from the meeting of Local Govt Excos and Ward Chairmen in Ado-Ekiti on Friday 16th of September, 2022, the leadership of Ado-Ekiti PDP has advised the son of the former governor of Ekiti State Ayo Fayose to withdraw from the race in the 2023 general elections to the House of Representative of Ekiti Central Constituency 1

“The leadership of the party in Ado-Ekiti noted that the party lost woefully in the last governorship election due to the greed and self centeredness of the former governor of Ekiti State, Ayo Fayose.

“Therefore, it is morally wrong for him or his son to be asking for support of the people of Ado-Ekiti having wrecked serious havoc on our party in the state

“The era of using our party to siphon public funds is over. Never again will any individual be allowed to take the support of our people for granted in Ado-Ekiti.

“We are equally aware of his divide and rule tendencies by luring some people with his looted funds for support.

“Using an octogenarian to truncate the resolve of the people is dead on arrival and such will be addressed in due course.”

Fayose is allegedly being accused of currently making underground moves to swift allegiance to PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, as part of measure to ensure victory of his son.

He has been one of the pillars behind Rivers state Governor Nyesome Wike battle to remove Iyorcha Ayu as PDP national chairman.

Pa Elesiokwu (1929-2022): Celebrating The Life and Time of a Man of Peace

0
Pa Innocent Elesiokwu Onyemaizu

The Onyemaizu family of Umuibe, Amagu, Oru-East local government area of Imo state will on the 29th of September, 2022, bid farewell to their patriarch, the late Pa Innocent Elesiokwu Onyemaizu who died on March 11, 2022.

According to Ralph Waldo Emerson, “it is not the length of life but the depth of life”,  and in the words of Chuck Palahniuk,  “we all die; the goal isn’t to live forever, the goal is to create something that will”.

The above praxis underlines the life and time of the late Elesiokwu. A community leader,  businessman, devout Catholic, a man of peace and stabilizing factor, Pa Elesiokwu, during his lifetime, was popular as  “Bude” and “Ijeelu” respectively. He acquired the alias, “Bude” during his heydays as a palm oil merchant in Benin while “Ijeelu” was given to him by his admirers in his community, Amagu.

Pa Elesiokwu enjoyed the blessing of long life, having left the stage at the glorious age of 93.

For the family, his death is the end of an era.

Until his demise, Elesiokwu was the only surviving child of his father, Onyemaize, the only surviving grandchild of his grandfather, Obinnakwere and the only surviving great-grandchild of his great-grandfather, Onyebuagu.

Born in 1929 in his community, Amagu, Elesiokwu was the last born of his parents. Losing his father at a tender age, the task of raising the young Elesiokwu fell on his doting mother.

Raising him alongside his other siblings was tough for his widowed mother hence Pa Elesiokwu didn’t quite enjoy the luxury of extended education.

With his education terminating at Standard Two, the young Elesiokwu would later leave for Benin, the present-day capital of Edo state together with his elder brother, the late Augustine Onyemaizu, in search of greener pasture.

The two brothers later veered into trading- buying and selling palm oil in drums which they sourced from home and transported to Benin to sell.

However, the booming trade would be truncated in 1967 following the outbreak of the Nigerian civil war.

Like millions of Easterners living outside the then Eastern Region, the war forced Elesiokwu and his young wife, a damsel at that time, the late Mrs Cicilia Onyemaizu from Omuma, also in Oru-East LGA, whom he married in 1958, to return home.

Upon returning to the Eastern Region which had by then declared itself the independent Republic of Biafra, Elesiokwu joined the Biafran Army. He fought in various sectors of the war including Ohaofia, Abiriba, and Onitsha among other places.

His Biafran Army unit, then stationed at the Borromeo axis of the commercial city, took part in defending Onitsha till it fell to the superior firepower of the Nigerian Army.

A few months into the end of the war, Elesiokwu sustained a bullet wound and was evacuated to the hospital. After recovery, his Commanding Officer graciously issued him a pass to visit his young family whom he had left nearly three years earlier.

However, as God would have it, the young soldier never returned to the war front because the war came to an abrupt end a few days before the expiration of his pass.

After the war, Elesiokwu picked up the pieces of his life by returning to his palm oil business.

By the 90s, he quit the palm oil business and concentrated on farm produce.

A devout Catholic and a member of the Catholic Men Organisation, CMO, Pa Elesiokwu is survived by children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and numerous other relations including Chidiebere Levi Onyemaizu, who until he was appointed the Senior Special Assistant on Print Media to Cross River state Governor, Professor Ben Ayade, was the Deputy Editor of a Lagos-based news medium, The Source Magazine.

In his condolence message, Professor Ayade prayed to God for the peaceful repose of Pa Elesiokwu’s soul and urged the family to accept their patriarch’s demise with equanimity.

Before his death in March, Elesiokwu was the oldest person in the Onyebuagu kindred and the second oldest person in his immediate clan, Umuibe.

NURTW Partners Federal Government On New Mass Transist Scheme

The leadership of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has promised to partner the federal government in its proposed mass transist scheme.

Under the scheme, being championed by the Federal Ministry of Transportation, new vehicles are to be purchased and made available for commercial drivers in the country.

A statement by Special assistant, media to the Minister, Ebenezer Adeniyan stated that the National President of the union, Mr. Tajudeen Baruwa, who led some national officers of the union on a courtesy visit to the Minister of State for Transportation,  Prince Ademola Adegoroye, in Abuja said the scheme is long overdue and a welcome development.

The Federal Ministry of Transportation had recently set up a committee to work towards the implementation of a proposed special scheme for mass transit to be driven by transport operators for ease of road transportation across the country.

Baruwa, who said commercial drivers across the country heaved a sigh of relief when the news of the proposed scheme filtered, said the union will do everything possible to partner with the federal government to see to the actualization of the scheme.

The union leader disclosed that the last time drivers in the country enjoyed a sustainable mass transit scheme was in 1992 during the regime of former Military President, General Ibrahim Babaginda, saying attempts by successive administrations on mass transit schemes flopped.

Buruwa urged the Minister to get the leadership of the transport union involved in the process as the drivers will be able to guide the government on the implementation of the scheme, especially on the choice of vehicles suitable for Nigerian roads.

He said commercial drivers no longer have the capacity to buy new vehicles, while the dealers who could give vehicles out on ‘hire purchase’ to drivers, are no longer in business, stressing that this new scheme will stop drivers from using dilapidated vehicles for commercial transportation.

The NURTW President, who commended the leadership style of Adegoroye since he assumed duties in the Ministry of Transportation, hailed the efforts of President Muhammadu Buhari towards improving land, rail and water transportation in the country.

Responding, the Minister of State for Transportation, commended the union for its readiness to partner with the Ministry on the proposed mass transit scheme, saying the scheme will be revolving and other stakeholders such as banks and insurance companies will be involved.

He added that the committee in charge has been given the mandate to seek the input of transport unions and other stakeholders in the implementation of the scheme.

Adegoroye, who expressed worry over the condition of most of the vehicles being used for commercial transportation in the country, said the scheme is aimed at phasing out rickety vehicles from Nigerian roads and providing enabling environment for transportation to safeguard the lives of commuters.

While lauding the leadership of the union for maintaining strong and disciplined followership, he however urged the union to train its members on the dangers of alcohol drinking and drug abuse which are rampant at many motor parks across the country.

“I commend your leadership but I think there is the need for commercial driving to be professionalized.

“Commercial driving should not be an all comers affair. Someone should not just learn driving and then put a vehicle on the road and starting commercial transportation.

“There should be special training for commercial drivers and there should be stringent conditions to be met by someone before becoming a commercial driver.

“You also need to curb individual recklessness by training your members against drink-driving and drug abuse.

“Alcohol should not be sold in motor parks and any driver who needs to take medications to relax should do so when he is not going to drive. We need to stop putting the lives of our people in danger.”

Tragic End: Fearless General, DN Nze, Slumps, Dies

Dom Nneji Eze dies

By Gideon Njoku

Tragedy hit the Nigerian Army, Imo State, and particularly, Owerri Nchi Ise,  on Thursday, September 15, 2022, when one of their most gallant officers/sons, Brigadier-General (Rtd) Dom Nneji Nze died suddenly.

Nze slumped and died in Abuja. And even though the cause of death is yet to be disclosed, all efforts to revive him when he slumped were in vain.

A native of Umuororonjo village, Owerri, capital of Imo State, the retired Brigadier-General was of the Course 35th Reg. of the Nigerian Army.

Noted for his courage and gallantry, his Course mates describe him as a fearless and can-do officer. With him, they say, there was no “never” in times of war and/or emergency situations. He was always one of the trusted officers sent to lead from the front.

They, also, describe him as a very loyal, patriotic and distinguished officer.

His patriotism shone like a million stars when some people tried to rope him into  a Coup Plot years ago. He was arrested, detained, but was cleared and was immediately released, smelling of roses.

A computer wizard, he was billed to travel to the United States of America when death inexplicably called suddenly.

Wike Signs Female Inheritance Bill Into Law

By Charles Igbo

From Rivers State comes refreshing news. Women are rejoicing and applauding the Governor of the State.

Away from the politics of his party, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP,  Rivers State Governor, a Lawyer, whose wife is a High Court Judge, has signed into law, the Female Inheritance Bill of Rivers State.

Officially the Law is known as “The Rivers State Prohibition of the Curtailment of Women’s Right to Share in Family Property Law No. 2 of 2022. It means that henceforth, nobody can deny any woman of her inheritance.

While signing the Bill into Law, the Governor lamented the  cultures, especially, in Rivers State, which discourage whatever engenders growth among the people.

Wike condemned the culture  which prevent woman from sharing in the inheritance of their families even when they are often the most successful and useful members of the society in comparism to male children.

Emphasising the importance of the Law, the Governor wondered:

“I don’t know why it’s a taboo; because you’re a girl, because of this is a woman, you’re not entitled to inherit what belongs to your father.

“It is not you who decide whether you will have a girl or you’ll have a boy, it is God. So, put yourself in their shoes today where, by the mercy of God, you have three children and they’re all girls and you struggle in life to see what you can keep for your children.

“Tomorrow, one of their uncles comes, and says, my friend, girls don’t inherit their father’s property. With all your efforts in life, somebody comes to discriminate against them, why? We have even found out that women are more useful to us then even the men.

“The day, you’re getting old and dying you’ll know that you need more daughters than men. They will leave their husbands’ houses and come to take care of you.”

The Governor asked women to stand on their rights and  not to be afraid of any threat from/by members of their families concerning inheritance. He urged them to challenge any discrimination against them in court. The law, he told them, is their weapon law in  to access their inheritance.

Electoral Fraud: Imo Government Seeks Arrest Of Ikenga Ugochinyere, Says He Has Case To Answer

0

The Imo State Government has called for the arrest and questioning of Mr Ikenga Ugochinyere for claiming that Voter Registration in Omuma, the home Ward of Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State was inflated with fictitious names.

The Imo State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Hon. Declan Emelumba made the call on Friday September 16, 2022 where he told a media conference that “ignoring the spurious and seditious outburst of Ugochinyere will amount to condoning criminality.”

He, therefore, called on the relevant security agencies to “immediately arrest the said Ugochinyere to find out from him how he obtained the voters register he has been parading before the public even when the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC is still at the stage of Automated Biometric Verification of Systems, which must be concluded before an official voters register can be released to the public.”

The Commissioner said that “INEC has issued an official statement on the above and has gone further to list the names of the States that entered fictitious registration of voters and Imo State is not on that list.”

Emelumba, therefore, expressed worry that “Ugochinyere must have either hacked INEC Saver and doctored documents there-from or forged the document he was brandishing,” noting that “this is criminal and it is important that he should  be immediately arrested for questioning.”

Furthermore, Emelumba debunked the claim by Ugochinyere that there was fraudulent registration at Omuma and emphasized that “the security agencies have an urgent task to find out how Ugochinyere, a PDP candidate in the 2023 elections for Ideato North and South Federal Constituency, came about the documents which is aimed at heating up the polity, creating tension and inciting the public.”

He also challenged Ugochinyere on what he described as “the laughable claim that the so-called Conference of United Political Parties (CUPP)’s alleged investigation into the 22 states controlled by APC in Nigeria only ended up pinpointing on the home Ward of Governor Uzodimma.”

“From his reasoning it is clear that there was no investigation in the first instance but circus show aimed at embarrassing the performing Governor of Imo State.”

Emelumba’s words: “By all intent and purposes, the show by Ugochinyere was hatched by PDP in Imo State to embarrass the Government in a vain attempt to diminish the shine from the hugely successful Presidential visit of Tuesday, 13th September, 2022 to Imo State.

“This is because it is difficult to explain why Ugochinyere released his tissue of lies just a day after the successful official visit of Mr. President to Imo State.”

The Commissioner noted that “it is only natural for PDP to express their dismay and devastation on the successful commissioning of the signature projects of the Governor by Mr. President and its inherent gains.”

Emelumba used the briefing to call on Ugochinyere who is the PDP candidate for the forthcoming elections for Ideato Federal Constituency of Imo State to “stop hiding under CUPP and using the body as a front and come out openly as PDP candidate to campaign for himself and his master.”

Denying the claim by the same Ikenga Ugochinyere that Omuma Ward has fewer than 6000 registered voters in 2014, Emelumba said “it is on good authority and from verifiable data from INEC that Omuma Ward had close to 10,000 registered voters under that period and for 2019 elections when their son contested as a Governor they registered over 23,000 because many indigenes from the Ward came home to register to support their son who was contesting the election.”

He continued: “Also, the 2023 elections as it is expected may have garnered over 20,000 more registered voters comprising students and staff of the State Polytechnic at Omuma from different parts of Nigeria residing in Omuma.”

Highlighting what he called “the tepid reference by Ugochinyere to a pending ‘seccret court action’’ in a Federal High Court Owerri against the use of BVAS,” Emelumba said that “the porous allegations against the Governor was to insinuate that the ‘secret court action’ was filed by an agent of Government.”

Emelumba further explained: “Unfortunately, an investigation into the suit-claim revealed that the NBA stamp used in filing the suit belongs to a lawyer who is a very close associate of former Governor Emeka Ihedioha, the paymaster of Ugochinyere.  Therefore, there is no doubt as to where the whole concoction is coming from and why.

“In the same vain the allusion by Ugochinyere that the INEC office at Omuma has been burnt and that residents have fled the community because of insecurity clearly vindicates government’s position that PDP was behind the insecurity in Imo State, Orlu and Omuma in particular for political gains. If the claim was true,  the President could not have gone to Orlu to Commission projects, the Catholic Bishops wouldn’t have held their Conference in Orlu. This is a clear manifestation that Imo has gone pass that and insecurity is over in Imo State.

“It is clear that Ugochinyere and his co-travelers’ antics are diversionary meant to perfect the fraudulent activities of PDP and to divert attention from their evil plots against the 2023 elections.”

2023: Go And Campaign, Don’t Depend On Rigging – Falae, Yakassai Tell Politicians

Olu Falae and Tanko Yakassai

By Akinwale Kasali

As political campaign for the 2023 General Election is set to commence at the end of September, former Presidential Candidate of Alliance for Democracy, AD, in 1999, and the founding Chairman the Social Democratic Party, SDP,  Chief Olu Falae, as well as a former Liaison Officer to ex-President Shehu Shagari, Alhaji Tanko Yakassai, have declared that there would be no rigging in the 2023 general elections.

The two elder statesmen urged politicians to move to the grassroots and campaign.

They stated these at the commissioning of the National Secretariat of the SDP in Abuja.

84-Year old Falae, speaking after cutting the tape of the new office, said when they decided to revive the SDP some people thought it was going to be impossible but they did it without litigation.

He said, “We have a good Presidential candidate in the person of Adewole Adebayo who did not only show the knowledge of the law but history, anthropology, architecture and other fields.

“The Party may not have a Governor today, may not be in Aso rock, but the SDP is getting there. Nigeria today is in crisis. You can’t move without being kidnapped. I had been kidnapped for four days in my own farm.

“I traveled to Lagos on foot as a young man without being kidnapped. But at 77, I was kidnapped. Controlling Government is not controlling Party. Ask the parties, what is their philosophy, they don’t know it. They don’t have a plan, that’s why things are getting worse.

“The SDP is the only party that can restructure and revive Nigeria. More people will leave the country if things are not put right. More doctors are leaving.

“Politics is about numbers. Bring people to the Party and surprise the so-called Party because no one will rig the election.

“We have a good chance to deliver Nigeria and help Nigeria from disaster. You have the change to deliver Nigeria.”

In the same vein, Yakassai, represented by the SDP Gubernatorial candidate in Adamawa State, Dr Umar Ardo, said the SDP should move to the grassroots and campaign adding that with the new electoral act 2022, no one will be able to rig the election.

He said the Electoral Act made it impossible for anyone to rig the election.

The 2022 Electoral Act is an opportunity for the SDP to make a mark as room for rigging and vote allocation have been tackled.

“What is put in the ballot box is what will be out and announced to the public. Don’t worry about not having governors. Go and talk to the grassroots because they are tired of APC and PDP, they are after alternatives” Yakasai said.

SDP Presidential Candidate, Adewole Adebayo said what SDP is bringing to Nigerians is just the white horse which signifies victory and prosperity.

He said, “Because poverty is ungodly and unnatural. If we don’t fight poverty, it will produce children which is insecurity.

“We are back, 30 years later, to open this office for truth, justice and farewell to poverty.

“If you want to know if I will be a better President, I’ve chosen SDP as a platform and not as a money bag for political parties. I chose a youth banker, Yusuf Salisu Buhari as my running mate.

“The SDP has the young person as the National Chairman and I am telling Nigerians that the opportunity you have been looking for is here.

“We will go to all the 774 LGAs and wards and deliver victory to Nigerians where Nigerians will have sound medical care, security and education.”

The National Chairman of SDP, Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam, while delivering his goodwill message advised the party to go and conquer since it was established during his administration.

“I am happy because one of the parties established is still alive. Keep hope alive, you can navigate through and bring change.

I don’t see any party defeating the SDP. The array of our Governorship candidates who have contested elections before is overwhelming. If you mention any of them, people know them and they will win in SDP. SDP will stand by you.

“We don’t concede defeat. There is no defeat in our dictionary. We started from a very difficult environment. All of us, let’s forget our sentimental issues if we really want to save Nigeria.”

Buhari Meets Pro Chancellors

By Ayodele Oni

As federal government seeks truce with striking members of Academic Staff Union of Universities, (ASUU), President Muhammadu Buhari Friday at State House, Abuja, met with the Chairman and select members of Pro-Chancellors of Federal Universities.

During the parley, the President promised to engage in further consultations with relevant stakeholders, towards ending the protracted strike by university lecturers, under the aegis of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The president said without necessarily going back on what is already established policy, “I will make further consultations, and I’ll get back to you.”

The Pro-Chancellors who were led to the meeting by Professor Nimi Briggs, said they had come to meet with the President in three capacities: “As President and Commander-in-Chief, as father of the nation, and as Visitor to the Federal universities.”

Professor Briggs added that despite the pall cast by more than seven months of industrial action, “the future of university system in the country is good,” citing as example the recent listing of the University of Ibadan among the first 1,000 universities in the world, a development occurring for the first time.

He commended Federal Government for concessions already made to the striking lecturers, including the offer to raise salaries by 23.5% across board, and 35% for Professors.

He, however, asked for “further inching up of the salary, in view of the economic situation of the country.”

The Pro-Chancellors also asked for a reconsideration of the No-Work, No-Pay stance of government, promising that lecturers would make up for time lost as soon as an amicable situation was reached, and schools reopened.

Minister of State for Education, Goodluck Nana Opiah, said all the concessions made by Federal Government were to ensure that the industrial action comes to an end, but ASUU has remained adamant.

Crack: Just Like Osun, Ondo PDP Distances Chapter From ‘Ayu Must Go Campaign’, Says It’s Committed To Victory

0
Atiku Abubakar at Ibadan

By Ayodele Oni

There is a crack in the submissions to the Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Atiku Abubakar, by the Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, as they concern the fate of the National Chairman, Dr Iyorchia Ayu.

The Ondo state Chapter distanced itself from the decision of the South-west  Zonal leadership of the party which demanded for the resignation of Dr Iyorcha Ayu as National Chairman.

While receiving the Presidential candidate of the Party in Ibadan, Oyo state capital during the week, Governor Seyi Makinde had tabled some demands which included the resignation of Ayu as national chairman.

The Governor pointed out that was the position of the leadership of the Party in the South-west.

“Our party wants to rescue Nigeria and our candidate is a unifier. He wants to restructure Nigeria.

“The message from the south-west PDP is that the south-west is asking that the national working committee (NWC) of the PDP should be restructured.

“We are asking the national chairman to step down so that the south will be fully included. That is the message.”

But two States have distanced their Chapters from Makinde’s submission as it affects Ayu.

First was the Osun State Chapter which dismissed the call for the resignation of Ayu as a no-no.

And, on Friday, the Ondo State Chapter maintained that it aligned itself with the decision of the 97th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the Party, which passed a vote of confidence on Senator Iyorchia Ayu, as the National Chairman and the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party.

The Party in a statement signed by the State Publicity Secretary, Mr. Kennedy Peretei,  also said it is supporting the Party’s Presidential Candidate, Atiku Abubakar unconditionally.

“The Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) Ondo State Chapter is committed to victory at the general elections in 2023.

“Since the All Progressives Congress (APC) entered the saddle in 2015, Nigeria has been on a free fall. We moved from the biggest economy in Africa to World capital of poverty.

“As a Nation, we are struggling for space for a ranking in failed States with Afghanistan and Syria under President Muhammad Buhari.

“Our Party is determined to end the misrule of APC, rescue and redirect our country on the path of recovery and prosperity.

“Against this background, Ondo State PDP aligns itself completely with the 97th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting Resolutions which passed a vote of confidence on Senator Iyorchia Ayu as National Chairman and the National Working Committee (NWC) of our great party.

‘We unconditionally support the presidential candidate of our party, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar who possesses the experience and capacity to lead Nigeria to the destination of our dreams.

“Our focus and priority at this critical time is victory at the polls. And we shall commit all our energies to ensuring victory.”

The pressure for Ayu’s resignation seem to be popular in the South, except, perhaps in Rivers, Abia, Enugu, Cross River and Oyo States.
