2023: Shock In Imo PDP As Chieftain Makes Tinubu Presidential Campaign List; Osinbajo, Lawal, Dogara Out

0
Nze Ozichukwu Chukwu

By Akinwale Kasali

In the Imo State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, disbelief and shock greeted the appearance of the name of one its pillars and chieftains, Nze Ozichukwu Chukwu, on the list of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Presidential Campaign Council.

Ozichukwu was number 88 on the 422-member list. At various times, a National officer and respected name in the PDP, Ozichukwu has not yet resigned from the PDP when his name appeared as a member of the APC Campaign Council.

The Party, since Friday when the list was made public, is wondering exactly what steps to take, and waiting to hear from Nze Ozichukwu.

Messing, however, are some prominent members of the Party. They include Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo  and former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, and former  Minister of State, Education, Emeka Nwajiuba.

The 422-man list has names of political heavyweights including APC governors, ministers, lawmakers, ambassadors as well as serving and past public office holders.

On the list released by the Presidential Campaign Council Secretary, James Faleke, in Abuja, Plateau State Governor, Simon Lalong, retained his position as Director-General just as Deputy Director-General (Operations), Adams Oshiomhole, and Director of Media and Publicity, Bayo Onanuga.

Some of the notable names missing from the Campaign list are those who have reservations over the APC, same-faith ticket.

That Babachir Lawal and Dogara were omitted from the list was  not surprising to political observers following their vehement rejection of, and stiff opposition to the Muslim-Muslim ticket of the Party. But no one has explained why the name of a former Minister for Communications, Adebayo Shittu, who heads one of the Presidential candidate’s biggest support groups — Asiwaju Tinubu-Shettima Coalition for Good Governance – was, also, missing.

Vice President Osinbajo’s Camp distanced itself from the former Lagos Governor since after the Presidential Primary.

On Tuesday, Dogara had predicted that the adoption of a Muslim-Muslim ticket was a fruitless political effort that was “doomed to end in spectacular failure.”

The ex-Speaker made the statement while delivering his keynote address at a summit tagged ‘Meet The 7Church,’ organised by the Nigeria National Christian Coalition.

Lawal, on the other hand, vowed that the introduction of a same-faith ticket by the APC was a deliberate plan to further create divisions in the North.

It would be recalled that the  former SGF, who spoke during an interview on Arise Television, declared that he was working with about 40 Christian leaders in the north to ensure that the contentious APC ticket failed.

Despite defending his principal stoutly on all fronts including live political television programmes, Shittu’s sin remained largely unknown.

It was however surprising that former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, and Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola,  were included in the list.

While Amaechi had subtly accused Tinubu of financially inducing delegates for votes at the last Convention, Aregbesola fell out badly with Tinubu during the Osun State Governorship Primary. It is  believed that he worked against  incumbent Governor, fellow party member, and a nephew  of Tinubu, Gboyega Oyetola. PDP’s Senator Ademola Adeleke comfortably won the election.

Oil Theft: FG Loses $7m Daily, Says Minister

0

Lai Mohammed, Nigeria’s Minister of Information and Culture has revealed that a total of 700, 000 barrels of crude oil is lost daily to oil thieve across the country.

A large chunk of this is stolen from Nigeria’s oil-producing region in the Niger Delta, security experts say, adding that the value of what is stolen at the current $100 per barrel is approximately $7 million.

The federal government recently awarded an N40 billion security contract to the company owned by repentant militant, Government Ekpumopolo aka Tompolo to prevent oil theft in the oil-bearing communities.

Recall that Mele Kyari, the chief executive of the Nigeria National Petroleum Company, NNPC had also accused churches and mosques of being part of oil theft and pipeline vandalism.

Speaking, Mohammed said the federal government is poised to end the theft through the deployment of modern technology.

The minister disclosed this in a statement on Friday by the Special Assistant to the President on Media, Segun Adeyemi, at a press briefing in Abuja after the aerial surveillance of the Trans-Forcados oil pipeline, Rivers State.

Mohammed said, “The investment in technology has become critical because the nefarious activities of vandals are causing Nigeria to lose approximately 700,000 barrels of oil daily. “

He said steps taken by the government have led to the arrest of “210 suspects and confiscation of 20.2 million litres of AGO, 461.8 thousand litres of PMS, 843.6 thousand litres of DPK, and 383.5 thousand barrels of crude oil.

“An additional 365 illegal refining sites were destroyed, with about 1,054 refining ovens, 1,210 metal storage tanks, 838 dugout pits, and 346 reservoirs destroyed by the GSAs.

“We witnessed first-hand a number of illegal refineries destroyed by our military in the course of our aerial surveillance.

“The new security architecture leverages collaboration between the upstream operators, industry regulators, government security agencies, and private security contractors,” the minister said.

Meanwhile, security experts who spoke with the magazine said some personnel of security agencies working in the Niger Delta are part of the oil theft in the region, adding that the government will solve the problem halfway if top military officers in the Navy, and Army found culpable in the act are severely punished.

Court Nullifies LASTMA Powers To impose Fines, Tow Vehicles

0

Justice Olalekan Oresanya of the Lagos High court has nullified the powers of LASTMA to impose fines or tow vehicles of traffic offenders in the state.

The ruling has been described as a watershed in the traffic management and enforcement system in the state, where LASTMA imposes huge monetary and other fines on traffic offenders without regards to the court of law.

The judge made the judgment on Thursday in a suit filed by Lawal Aliyu against LASTMA and the Lagos State government.

Justice Oresanya in his ruling said this is wrong for LASTMA to do, that it’s only the court that impose fines and punish traffic offenders.

Aliyu, a lawyer, filed the suit to contest the N20,000 fine imposed on him by LASTMA for an alleged traffic offence, and another N10,000 towage fine which he was forced to pay by the traffic enforcement agency.

Apart from LASTMA those joined in the suit includes, the Lagos State government and the Attorney General of the state.

The judge resolved the three prayers in favour of the applicant, sitting Sections 34, 36 and 41 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), among others for his decision.

On issue one regarding the question of whether the obstruction, towage, seizure and impoundment of the applicant’s car with Registration No. AGL 93 DW on the 23rd November 2021 by LASTMA was unlawful, the court ruled that from the available evidence, the respondents failed to establish any fact to justify their action and that there was no part of the Lagos State Traffic Management Law (2018) that permits the derogation of the applicant’s right to freedom of movement.

Justice Oresanya ruled: “Public Authorities and Bodies cannot act in a manner that is inconsistent and incompatible with the fundamental rights of citizens as guaranteed by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which is the grundnorm;

“Even in the jurisdiction where parliamentary laws/statutes are supreme, such as the United Kingdom, public bodies must not act in a manner that is incompatible with the convention rights of citizens as embodied in the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) which has now been incorporated into the Human Rights Act 1998, the African Charter on Human and Peoples Right being an equivalent of the ECHR and which has now being codified into the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Right (Ratification and Enforcement) Act, 2004 being the equivalence law.”

On the second issue regarding the fine and towing fee imposed on the applicant, the court said a careful perusal of Section 27 (1) b, c, d and e of Traffic Management Law relied upon by the respondents revealed that LASTMA cannot impose fine without arraigning an alleged traffic offender in court, adding that it amounted to ignoring fair hearing and being a judge in one’s case.

The court warned LASTMA against the habit of forcibly towing vehicles of alleged traffic offenders, describing it as the height of oppression.

Oresanya said: “I must add that it is strange and bizarre that the 1st Respondent (LASTMA) towed a serviceable vehicle in good working condition and thereby caused damage to the vehicle in the process when it has not been established that the Applicant resisted the arrest of his vehicle, only for the 1st Respondent to subsequently impose a fine on the Applicant for a service not solicited by the Applicant. To my mind, this is the height of oppression and impunity and it is condemnable.

The Main Judgement

“On the whole, I give judgment for the Applicant in the following terms; I make a declaration that the obstruction, towage, seizure, and impoundment of the Applicant’s car with Registration NO. AGL 93 DW on the 23rd November 2021 by the Respondents is unlawful, illegal, and unconstitutional as same amounted to gross violation of the Applicant’s fundamental right to freedom of movement enshrined in Section 41 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (band amended).

“I make a declaration that the imposition and enforcement of LASTMA fine in the sum of N20,000 and LASTMA Towing fine in the sum of N10,000 on the Applicant without an order of a court of competent jurisdiction is unlawful, Illegal and is null and void and the said fines should be paid back by the Respondents to the Applicant.

“The sum of N750,000 compensatory damages is awarded against the Respondents for the violation of the Applicant’s fundamental rights. This is the Judgment of the Court,” the judge ruled.

Meanwhile, the magazine learned that the state government is planning to appeal the judgment.

But those watching the matter carefully insist that the government must obey the judgment until an appellate court gives a contrary judgment.

Gov Oyetola Cleaned The Mess Left By Aregbesola’s Administration – Group

By Ayodele Oni

Reactions have trailed remarks by the Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola that the administration of Gboyega Oyetola is a failure.

A socio-political group, in Osun state, Dynamic Reformers, (DR), said rather than being a failure, Oyetola has political will and temerity to correct some of the anomalies that his administration inherited in all the critical sectors of the state.

The group which spoke through its Chairman, Mr Duro Olaleke, a retired educationist with the Federal Government College, stated that the group is excited with the willpower exhibited by the Oyetola’s administration to frontally “address the perennial crisis associated with the same school uniforms foisted on all the secondary school pupils across the state by the immediate-past administration in the state.

“Topmost on the request of all the nine federal constituencies that the governor visited shortly after his election as a show of appreciation was that Oyetola should reverse the common uniform policy which he duly carried out.”

The educationist also applauded  Oyetola’s administration for reversing the strange “iconoclastic policy of education that he inherited from 4:5:3:4 back to 6:3:3:4 system of education as it makes the state a pariah entity among the comity of states in the federation.

“The legacy of inherited strange system of the educational policy was the poor outing of the public schools pupils in some of the external examinations witnessed in the state recently, adding that the products of the Oyetola administration would start to emerge in 2026.

“The names of some old schools that were changed and relocated without recourse to the principal stakeholders of the schools which later resulted to litigation against the government or strained relationship with the government was also reversed by the present administration.

“The peace and harmony being witnessed in all the public primary and secondary schools today are traceable to the candour, bluntness and straightforwardness of Governor Oyetola in government as opposed to what he inherited.

“Aregbesola 4:5:3:4 reclassification of the public school system did not align with the National Policy on Education such that most development partners and agencies refused to support the state on educational projects.

“It is on record that some of the agencies particularly UNICEF refused to support Osun State on its educational activities because they did not align with the national policy.

“The single school uniform, re classification of the public school system and the abolition of single-sex schools introduced by the administration of Mr Rauf Aregbesola in 2013 encouraged cultism and other social vices among the pupils in Osun State.

“The extensive restructuring and rehabilitation of the public school buildings that the administration of Oyetola carried out has restored confidence of parents for the safety of their children and wards while in schools.

“The banishment of the era of half salaries for all the government workers since the inception of the administration of Governor Oyetola would not be forgotten in the state as workers are now sure of prompt collection of their full salaries unhindered at the end of the month which, to a large extent, positively influences economic activities in the state.

“If not for the ingenuity of Oyetola, how he has been managing to function optimally in government despite the obvious paucity of fund, remains a miracle as he has been ensuring that no aspect of the development of the state suffers.

“Since the inception of Governor Oyetola’s administration, the state has been witnessing developmental projects in all fronts across the state in the areas of provision of health facilities, roads construction and rehabilitation, adequate security of lives and property, wholesome welfare of the citizenry, qualitative education, among others.

“It wouldn’t be an overstatement for the discerning members of the society to observe and conclude that the Oyetola administration is a God-sent to correct the inherited rot in the government.”

EFCC, ICPC Quiz Federal Polytechnic Workers Over Spurious Payment

Poly Ado Ekiti

By Ayodele Oni

An alleged payment of unauthorized money to some workers of the Federal Polytechnic Ado Ekiti, has landed them in the custody of Economic Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC).

The development forced the leadership and members of Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic, to embark on protest.

They described as illegal, detention of their members by the EFCC and Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC).

The aggrieved lecturers carried placards with various inscriptions bearing their minds and agitation.

Trouble started when some members of ASUP were invited to the office of the anti-graft agencies in Ilorin and Akure in Ondo State following a petition received over some transactions in the institution which was suspicious.

The EFCC, through the office of the Rector invited the affected lecturers who traveled to Ilorin only to get detained and quizzed over an alert they received from the institution some months back.

The union said, the allegations levelled against their members were unfounded, baseless and that they knew nothing about the matter.

Speaking with newsmen during the protests in Ado-Ekiti, the Chairman of Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic, Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti chapter, Dr Emmanuel Abunbi worried over the situation and called on the management to intervene.

“When they came back we discovered that they were actually arrested because they had to provide surety, and were unjustly detained and profiled as an offender which was unacceptable.

“The money was paid as promotion arrears which was deserved, but were told to refund because they were not yet due which they did accordingly to a designated account that the management provided.

“They did not apply and since it was refunded and now for EFCC to call it criminal is way too far.

“We aggreed that part of the key functions of the EFCC are to investigate all financial crimes, including advance fee fraud, money laundering, counterfeiting, illegal charge transfers, but we are not satisfied with this particular action hence the protest to show our grievances.

The ASUP chairman said he wants EFCC to know its members are law abiding citizens and will support any fraud detection, but it does not include subjecting members to inhuman treatment that they do not deserve.

“We want the management to reach out to EFCC to clarify that we know nothing about these transactions and the money is no longer in our custody.”

One of the lecturers, Mr Samuel Abereola the Head of Marketing Department, said he was punished unjustly.

Reacting to the allegations, the Director of Protocols, Information and Public Relations of Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti, Prince Adeyemi Adejolu, claimed that the petitioners were unknown to the school management.

“It’s true that some faceless people styled as concerned Old Students of this institution wrote a petition to the security Agencies especially the Anti-graft agencies that’s EFCC and ICPC which received the petition.

“They were calling for investigation of what is happening in the institution, so EFCC wrote requesting for documents and since it is still under the law, we obliged them the list of transactions and at the end of the day some staff were invited.

“They are alleging that some staff were colluding with the management to serve as conduit pipe to siphon the resources of the institution.”

Adejolu maintained that the Rector held a meeting with all staff regarding the matter and as such lecturers are not the only ones being investigated.

Wike’s Memory Has Failed Him

The Governor of Rivers State and an esteemed member of our Party, Barrister Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, addressed the Press on current issues within our Party, and in the encounter, he made some utterances which are fallacious. I believe he did not lie. It may just be a case that because of the task of running a successful State like Rivers, his memory may have failed him. So, I have written the below to refresh his memory.

*The Peoples Democratic Party’s National Chairman, Senator Iyorchia Ayu, never promised to resign if a Northern Presidential candidate is elected. Rather, he said openly, and on video, that he would resign IF the PDP asked him to. And since the PDP NEC passed a vote of confidence in him, why should he resign?

*The Peoples Democratic Party did not jettison zoning in favour of the North. Zoning was jettisoned in favour of the South. The last PDP President is from the South. By virtue of the Party’s Constitution and tradition, the next President should come from the North.

*If Wike has evidence that the Peoples Democratic Party Chairman, Senator Iyorchia Ayu, is not a trustworthy character, he should provide that to the Police and other Law enforcement Agencies.

*The Peoples Democratic Party Presidential Primaries were not flawed. They were transparent and watched live on TV by Nigerians. A winner emerged. Many, also, did not win. Saraki, Tambuwal, Mohammed Hayatudeen, Dele Momodu, Anyim, Fayose, Emmanuel and others have not complained of any untoward happenings.

*If the Peoples Democratic Party Chairman, Senator Iyorchia Ayu, convened any illegal meeting in the house of retired Generals, then proof of that should be tendered by the one making the allegations. By the way, who should the PDP Chairman meet?  APC members, like someone we know?

*Waziri Atiku could not have promised Governor Wike that Senator Ayu would resign because he has no power to make Senator Ayu (who was largely brought in by Governor Wike) resign.

*How can a man who single-  handedly installed the last two Chairmen and many members of the NEC call the same Party “arrogant”? If an engineer builds a house and calls it ugly, what is he invariably saying about himself?

*Wike says Waziri Atiku is surrounding himself with people without much political value, why is he resisting joining the PCC. We need Wike because he obviously  has much political value.

*The Peoples Democratic Party has a NEC. The NEC can discipline anybody according to the Constitution of the Party.

*Every member of the Party is a vital picture, but no member is the big picture.

*The PDP Constitution should determine the fate of the Peoples Democratic Party Chairman, Senator Iyorchia Ayu.

OPINION: Why They Are Afraid Of Peter Obi’s Rise

0
Amanze Obi

By Amanze Obi

The ongoing attempt by a group of lawyers from a particular section of the country to stop the solidarity rally being organized for Peter Obi in Lagos through the courts speaks volumes. It is a crass display of bigotry; indeed a distressing example of little-mindedness and sheepishness. The move is as sickening as it is disgusting. The action smacks of paranoia. It is, as a matter of fact, yet another irrational attempt by those who are uncomfortable with the momentum around Obi’s presidential aspiration to bring him down.

But those who are abreast of political developments in the land are hardly surprised. They are aware that certain disquiet, even consternation, has enveloped the polity since Peter Obi stepped forward to bid for the presidency. His quest has brought about an untold angst in certain quarters. Those who are ill at ease with the unexpected development are squirming with discomfort. They do not seem to understand what is about to take place. Could it be a democratic revolution, a revolt, an electoral coup or what? Who could this man be? A phenomenon or a larger-than-life actor on the political scene? The bemusement is still a matter of concern to many, especially those who are not properly disposed to his political ascendancy.

This disquieting scenario is eliciting reactions from interested quarters. At first many were given to dismissing him as a social media creation; a mere flash in the pan. They said he was going nowhere. But each passing day seems to depict a contrary reality. The man could be going somewhere after all.

This is the crux of the matter. Should this man who nobody ever imagined could become such a force be allowed to go somewhere? Those who are still in shock over his meteoric rise will not accept that. They are bent on creating the impression that Peter is going nowhere. Where the impression does not stick, a change of strategy is required. This consists mainly in demonizing him. He has to be maligned with a load of scurrilous whiff. That explains the barrage of anti-Obi drivel that has become the hallmark of a section of the media.

What is the content of the menu they are serving? In recent weeks, a good number of media men and commentators who are loyal to Bola Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate have made conscious efforts to undermine the candidature of Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential standard-bearer. The anti-Obi elements have painted him in lurid colours. Some of them did not stop there, they strayed farther afield to drag his Igbo ethnic group into the fray. Rather than acknowledge his pan-Nigerian disposition, Obi’s traducers have mischievously tried to project him as an Igbo candidate who should be shunned by non-Igbo Nigerians. In fact, they have tried to sell the impression that Peter and his Igbo ethnic stock are not deserving of the presidency. But this piece of blackmail has not worked. It is too lame to deserve any consideration by rational beings. But the Obi traducers are still digging in. They have, in extreme cases, packaged and sold him within their narrow confines as a member of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). They believe that the IPOB tag will be a stigma that can undermine his presidential bid.

Peter Obi
Peter Obi

But that has still not worked. That may explain the recruitment of some ethnic lawyers who have gone to court to stop Obi’s supporters from staging a peaceful march in Lagos State in support of his candidature. Bereft of sense and substance, the howlers have told the court that Obi’s supporters are one and the same thing as #EndaSARS protesters of 2020 and should, therefore, not be allowed to march across Lagos State. The stupidity inherent in this charge is crying to high heavens for containment. Can a people or group be this petty? Such bunkum. What crime has Nigeria committed to be cursed with this band of nation-wreckers? I shudder at their lowness and hollowness. They are an embarrassment to the civilized world. Those behind the suit are the real gangsters that the system should get rid of. They are sowing seeds of discord. They have to be stopped in their tracks before they inflict further damage to the country.

The obvious fact in all of this is that those queuing behind Tinubu believe that the easiest way to give their principal an edge in the election is to cut Obi down. This strategy is faulty through and through. Those who believe in Obi’s candidature are not likely going to be taken in by these cheap antics. In fact, it could have a counter-productive effect. To avoid a boomerang, the Tinubu campaigners should look in the direction of their candidate. He requires a lot of packaging for him to penetrate the voters’ market. Those who are interested in his presidential quest should do more to sell him than dissipate energy on running down Peter Obi.

Rather than the ongoing campaign of calumny against Obi, the Tinubu campaigners will be helping their cause if they focus on those positives that can sell their own candidate. They will achieve better mileage with this. Efforts at deriding Peter Obi are not working. Rather, they are becoming jaded and unimaginative. Those who have made this their stock in trade should find a better job to do.

Interestingly, in all of this, the camp of Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP) is quiet. Nothing is being said or heard about Atiku and his party. Whereas the LP and the APC are at each other’s throats, the PDP and its candidate are luxuriating in a state of unconcern. But are they really unconcerned? Why is it that the APC campaigners are not looking in the direction of Atiku? Do they consider him an easy ride? Their disposition suggests that Atiku is not a force to reckon with as far as 2023 is concerned. They think he should be left alone. I suspect that Atiku and his camp are enjoying the bickering going on between LP and APC. They must be having a good laugh over the disregard for a candidate who has said time and time again that he has a huge vote bank. The APC, which ignited all the fight against LP, will be doing the approaching campaigns a world of good if its henchmen focus on issues rather than the ongoing guttersnipe rhetoric.

Uzodimma To Special Citizens: You’re The Reason For My Government

0
Hope Uzodimma

Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodinma has reminded People Living with Disabilities in Imo State that they are part of the reason for his administration and that no room will be given for any form of discrimination against them.

The Governor gave the assurance Thursday night when he received in audience the leadership of the Imo State Chapter of People Living with Disabilities who paid him a courtesy call at Government House Owerri.

Governor Uzodimma told them outrightly that he does not support discrimination against anybody, what is more against them “merely because  of their challenges,” noting that “those who are not challenged today may be challenged tomorrow.”

“No one knows who will lead the State and Country tomorrow,” the Governor said, and urged them not to feel they have any shortcomings as “what is needed for performance is mental strength and ideas.”

Besides, the Governor said, ‘’ideas rule the world.’’

He thanked them for finding time to visit him and for remaining resilient in their support to his government even as he reminded them that they have been friends and will continue to relate with each other as friends.

Governor Uzodimma promised to look critically at their request on employment waiver and assured that they will be “given equal opportunities.”

He said his Government will work on their demand to accommodate them in the areas they will be best fitted and not necessarily their demand for quota “because waiver and quota will bring a type of stigma on you.”

The Governor also promised to take care of their request for Subvention through empowerment of their members on skills development so that “they will be self employed, self sustained and become employers of labour themselves.”

The Governor also promised to look at available options to deal with their request for a Bus.

He told their Leader and the Imo State Chairman of People Living with Disabilities, Chief Stanley Nwachukwu who is aspiring to contest the election of the National President of People Living With Disabilities, that he has always supported him and will support him again, noting that if “he succeeds it will be a boost to our Party, the APC both at the State and National level.”

Earlier while presenting them to the Governor,  Hon. Commissioner for Women Affairs and Vulnerable Groups,  Lady Nkechinyere Ugwu told the Governor that “People Living with Disabilities have been very supportive, reliable and trusted allies” of her Ministry and the the 3R administration from the beginning.

She said they were happy to meet with the Governor who is their Grand Patron.

In their address presented by the State Chairman of Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD),  Imo State Chapter,  Chief Nwachukwu, they acknowledged the “immeasurable acts of good deeds of Governor Uzodimma weaved around the 3R mantra of Rehabilitation, Reconstruction and Recovery,” noting that “Imo people have heaved a sign of relieved since the Governor came on board in Imo State.”

He congratulated the Governor on his numerous infrastructural developments, saying that “step by step Imo is being reconstructed, recovered and all eyes, except for few opposition die-hards, are witnesses to massive reconstruction of roads and improvement of infrastructural decay as well as reduction in infrastructural deficit embarked upon by the Governor.”

He however made request for payment of arrears of their subvention, employment waiver for members, bus for the association to enable them move around and even participate in forth-coming political campaigns of APC.

Present at the courtesy call were the Deputy Governor,  Prof. Placid Njoku, the Secretary to the Government of Imo State, Chief Cosmas Iwu, the Chief of Staff, Barr. Nnamdi Anyiaehie, among other top government functionaries.

Imo: Buhari Approves Drainage Of Orashi River To Link Atlantic Ocean; Navy, Uzodimma Meet Over Project

Hope Uzodimma and Naval Officials

Officials of the Nigerian Navy on Saturday met with Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State in furtherance

of discussion on the approval given by President Muhammadu Buhari for the drainage of Orashi River in Oguta to link the Atlantic Ocean for the enhancement of economic activities on that corridor.

President Buhari had communicated his approval for the project through the Office of the Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo, based on Governor Uzodimma’s proposal that the Orashi River in Oguta is pregnant with lots of economic activities if drained and linked to the Atlantic Ocean.

At the meeting which held at the Government House Owerri, Rear Admiral Silyranda Lassa represented the Chief of Naval Staff.

Addressing the media on the essence of his meeting with the Navy, Governor Uzodimma said it was in furtherance of  the discussions and proposals by the Imo State Government to the Federal Government to pursue its Gas Industrialization Policy on the Oguta Lake and Orashi River axis.

He said that the leadership of Nigerian Navy were in the State to “visit the site to assess the main obstacles hindering the programme as proposed by the State Government.”

Governor Uzodimma said that the Government of Imo State had “considered it expedient to propose to Nigerian Navy for a partnership to open the access of Oguta Lake and Orashi River up to the Sea in River State to enable bigger vessels come into Imo State.”

The Governor said: “When realised, the project will help manage the security situation in the area, eliminate cases of crude oil stealing, pipeline vandalism and enhance security.”

Additionally, he said the realisation of the project will “stimulate economic activities, create more jobs for our people and then boost the economy of the State.”

Governor Uzodimma said the Naval Officers who are in the State will visit the site on Saturday,  September 24, 2022, and thereafter “Government will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) leading to the project implementation proper.”

He described the project as work in progress, assuring that “when the MOU is signed and the other processes concluded the authorities will come up with the work programme highlights which will be made available to the public.”

Speaking on the reason for their meeting/visit, Rear Admiral Silyranda Lassa who represented  Rear Admiral  Gambo said recently they “established a Naval Base at Oguta which has helped in addressing certain security challenges in the area.”

“Beyond that, it has made social and economic activities to strive, especially with giant strides in the security areas made by the State Government.”

Furthermore,  Lassa said as a Maritime Security Agency, the corridor will provide them with the opportunity “to also assist the State in any way they can and in some certain aspects, the State’s desire to, at least, alleviate what they are seeing as the de-generalization activities within the State.”

The Naval Chief also informed that they were in Imo “at the instant of the Chief of Naval Staff to look at where we will partner with the State Government to assist in some of these areas and help the State benefit from its enormous resources.”

He acknowledged that a lot of natural resources abound in the area and that when they are opened up “Imo State will be one of the leading States in the Gas industrialization activities in Nigeria.”

Lassa added that in the course of their visit, the Hydrographer of Nigerian Navy will look at the area under examination and carry out the survey. “They will be able to chart appropriate areas they think will be in cheapest possible manner they can achieve the mandate to the State,” he said.

He acknowledged that the Geographic Department of the Nigerian Navy has already started the dredging/expansion and survey of the River Niger which started from Lokoja, noting that work has progressed up to Burutu.

“Once this is completed the entire aspect of the survey is done. It will be left for the Federal Government to do the needful and the expansion of that axis. So when the corridor is expanded it will open up the area to the benefit of Imo State and Country in general.”

Imo: Why I resigned As Speaker Of The House Of Assembly – Kennedy Ibeh; Gov Uzodinma Pleads Forgiveness

0
Hope Uzodinma

Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodimma has harped on the need for greater synergy between the three arms of government.

He spoke Thursday night at the Banquet Hall of the Government House Owerri during a Dinner he held for the new Speaker of the Imo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Emeka Nduka and his colleagues.

It turned out to be an occasion that it afforded the immediate past Speaker of Imo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Kennedy Ibe, the opportunity to explain why he resigned from office.

Ibe, who represents Obowo State Constituency at the Imo State House of Assembly said he needed time to prosecute his campaign as electioneeeing for the 2023 general election draws closer, noting that his successor, Rt. Hon Nduka is most fitting to occupy the exalted office now “because he is not contesting the election.”

Governor Uzodimma told the gathering that included political appointees, APC State Executives and other Heads of Government Agencies, that the coming together was a deliberate way of creating bonding for members of the three arms of Government for greater productivity.

The Governor said he deliberately brought the entire arms of the Government together for them to “re-evaluate themselves and their performance in Imo politics and access their successes and failures.:

“Identity mixture has been the issue, yet, within the party top brass, the decision and determination is to make the place called Imo State a friendly place to live.”

The Governor said that the target of the Party and its members is always to have a meeting point where they must agree and review their work and ensure they function well and efficiently.

Governor Uzodimma who described the day as special, thanked the leadership and members of the Imo State House of Assembly as well as the leaders of the State who have been with him since 2020 and reminded them that “democracy has come to stay and it will be better practised and consummated when the politicians, understand themselves better.”

He reminded all that as one political family they needed to operate as a network where people can identify and see them as those working together for a common interest and goal.

The Governor told the aggrieved members of the Party, who for no fault of theirs or anybody, did not clinch ticket at the primaries, that “it is no longer fashionable to go about complaining,” pleading with them and all those who are aggrieved to “consider the sense of reasoning, forgive and forget and join hands to achieve the bigger target of winning the elections for the party.”

He said as Governor he has been trying his possible best to put on ground some observable achievements needed by the candidates of the Party to convince the people of Imo State and even the opposition to support and vote for them during election, insisting that the gains were recorded through the 3R mantra of Rehabilitation, Reconstruction and Recovery.

Governor Uzodimma said as a leader his responsibilities include attracting respect and dignity to the Party and its members.

He acknowledged the essence of separation of powers in a democracy, and emphasized that “what makes democracy thick and strong is the clause of separation of powers – Executive, Legislature and Judiciary.”

“However, in every strata there must be a head and as such the leader of the Executive is the head of the  three arms of Government.”

He said it is “important the arms of government realize the need to forge a common front and a common objective that will help government of the day to realize its vision and mission.”

He reiterated his believe in the Nigerian project and urged the gathering to “wear your thinking caps and ask some pertinent questions of where we are, where do we want to go and how do we get to where we want to go?”

He added: “Nigeria is a Federation, the Igbos and the South East is only a Federating Unit. The rest of Nigeria has one third that can form a quorum and also have two third that can dissolve the meeting. The consequences of this are that Nigeria can move forward without us, therefore we need Nigeria more than Nigeria  needs us.”

To the entire people of the South East,  the Governor encouraged them to work hard and defend their positions today so that the “generations unborn will remember them positively.”

“Let us be remembered for what we did when we had the opportunity because we must leave Imo State better than we met it.”

He promised to continue to meet with the audience to bond more with them and urged them to go home and talk to the people at the Local Government level as Nigeria is theirs.

Governor Uzodimma told the audience that President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the drainage of Orashi River to the Atlantic Sea and that the leadership of Nigerian Navy will be visiting Imo State soon for project management meeting.

“This must be supported because it is a way of boasting the economy and opening up the South East to the outside world through the Seaport.”

Addressing the audience, the new Speaker Imo State House of Assembly,  Rt. Hon. Barr. Emeka Nduka described the dinner as “symbolic, significant and awesome because of the host, the Governor of Imo State himself.”

Nduka thanked God who made it possible for his colleagues to elect him as their “Chief Servant” and thanked the Governor for accepting him as the Speaker Imo State House of Assembly.

He promised to leave up to the expectations of the Governor, his colleagues and Imo people in general.

Also, he pledged, on behalf of his colleagues, that the Assembly will continue to use all legal instruments to run the legislative affairs and churn out laws and motions that will give Imo people the best dividends of democracy.

In his own brief remarks, the immediate past Speaker, Rt. Hon. Kennedy Ibe affirmed that he resigned from the position to enable him face his electioneering and avoid distractions that may come up from the challenges of the office.

He told the audience that the process that led to the emergence of his successor was smooth and devoid of bitterness or rancour, and thanked his colleagues and the Governor for the massive support he got from them during the period he served as Speaker.

In their goodwill messages, the Majority Leader and Member representing Owerri West, Rt. Hon. Kanayo Onyemechi, that of Owerri North, Hon. Philip Ejiogu and Hon. Ngozi Obiefule of Isu State Constituency, expressed their fervent support to the new Speaker whom they described as a “humble member of the House.”

Earlier while welcoming the audience,  the Secretary to Imo State Government, Chief Cosmas Iwu said that, “as a family the Governor had thought it wise to ones in a while call his children together, look at their faces, interact with them and reason a way forward.”

Also in his brief remarks the Chief Political Adviser and Head Political Bureau,  Barr Enyinna Onuegbu said the luncheon, though organized to honour the Speaker and his members, attracted all the key players in the 3-R administration, and thanked the Governor for approving the coming together and hoped it will yield the expected results.
