“Who is Peter Obi?” Obidient Movement Answers FFK; Challenges Him To Provide Answers On His Candidate

Femi Fani-Kayode

By Gideon Njoku

The Obidient Movement, supporters and loyalists of the Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, and his running mate Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has responded to the unwarranted attack on Obi, by a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Femi Fani-Kayode.

FFK had inexplicably launched an attack on Obi and called him all kinds of derogatory names because Obi said he would only respond to comments by Presidential candidates, and not their Aides.

For that FFK descended on Obi, called him arrogant and empty and a dunce and a common trader. Then, he ended by asking, “Who is Peter Obi?”

In a swift response, the Obidient Movement answered the question, and urged FFK to follow suit and answer questions credentials on his own candidate, Bola Tinubu of the APC.

Following is the full text of the response.

“Party-switching champion and notorious attack dog of the ruling All Progressives Congress, Femi Fani-Kayode, recently made an issue about Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) leading the race for the Aso Rock Villa.”

The Obi-Datti Media Office of the LP, warning for the umpteenth time about APC’s race-by-proxy, and says it has the answer to FFK.

“We will only respond to actual candidates, not their proxies and or attack dogs seeking attention and trying to justify their pay,” it said in a press statement today.

“Peter Obi is a Nigerian trader leading the movement for the new Nigeria of our dreams. He made a modest income and created wealth by doing legitimate business.

He was Governor of Anambra State between 2006 to 2014 and left office with unprecedented track records, yet unchallenged, both in infrastructural development, accountability, and investment to earn him the award of Governor of the Decade.

“Obi has a traceable history of both origin and educational career. Obi has a message of competence, capacity, and character in leadership which he flaunts. He has no trace of narcotics to warrant his visiting either Ghana or Europe for rehabilitation to be stable enough for public office.

“What FFK wants us to do by his question is to re-highlight, to the public, who the candidates are. Thus we are proud and eager to do this because we have good products and are very ready to take them to market.

“Now that we have answered Fani-Kayode’s question on who Obi is and has been, we challenge him to tell Nigerians who his candidate is, his origin, antecedents, what he did before coming into politics, his criminal records, and his source of income before, and after governorship.

“Obi has never hidden that he was into trade and commerce since his undergraduate days which his classmates can attest to, but Fani-Kayode’s Principal has no classmates, even though he claimed to have gone to some schools.

“We understand Fani-Kayode’s struggle to be relevant in the system for survival. When he migrated to the APC, he thought he would get the attack dog job for the party ahead of 2023. That bid was lost, but he is now trying to show presence by attacking Peter Obi.

“Today’s Nigeria needs a man who, from selling tomatoes grew to become the youngest Nigerian to be Chairman of a post-consolidation bank, who became a Governor and remains relevant almost a decade after leaving office, not an economic parasite who knows little about growing and developing the economy and only lives by acquiring and spending public funds.”

The statement further said that “the train journey to take back Nigeria had left the station; joining the Obidient family on this mission of rescuing and rebuilding Nigeria is the best option for every true patriot.”

Wike Drops Criminal Charge Against Amaechi, Others

By Ayodele Oni

Rivers State Government, which stripped former Governor Omehia of his rights two days ago, has withdrawn the criminal charge filed against immediate past Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi; governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Tonye Cole; and five others.

The state government had filed the suit accusing Ameachi, a former Governor of the State and others, of selling government assets running into several billions of naira during Amaechi tenure.

The matter, which resumed for ruling on the legality of a private lawyer to prosecute the case, could not continue as counsel to the State Government and Commissioner for Justice, Prof. Zaccheus Adangor, informed the court that he was withdrawing the suit.

Reacting, counsel to APC, Amaechi and Cole argued that withdrawing the suit was an abuse of court process and prayed the court to dismiss the criminal charges if the suit must be withdrawn.

The Presiding Judge, Justice Okogbule Gbasam after hearing the arguments of the parties in the matter, struck out the suit and the charges against the APC and others.

One of the defence lawyers, Achinike Wobodo who spoke with journalists on the development, said they were ready to face the state government whenever there was a fresh charge against their clients.

“As it stands today, there is no charge against anybody in any court. We do not intend to prevent whether they want to file any other charge or not.

“Taking one thing at a time, if they bring any other charge, we will also challenge them.

“We have said to Rivers people, these are just antics to paint these gentlemen in a bad light.”

Amaechi, who placed second at the presidential primary of the APC, after he resigned as a Minister, has been silent on recent political development in the state, especially as it affects Governor Nyesome Wike.

Some of his followers have been reported to have decamped to the People’s Democratic Party, (PDP) but the former Minister has not made public his next political move after losing out in the APC primary.

2023: Pan Yoruba Groups Endorse Tinubu’s Candidature

The Presidential aspiration of All Progressives Congress, APC, Presidential Candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu received a boost as over 120 Pan Yoruba groups endorsed him on Thursday.

The event organized by the Alliance of Yoruba Democratic Movements, (AYDM) took place at the St Leo Catholic Church in Lagos where no fewer than 1,500 delegates representing various groups endorsed him.

The AYDM said Nigeria, once again, is at a crossroad, adding that it again  being put to historic test come February 2023 when the people will go to the poll to choose a President that will steer the affairs of Africa’s most populous country, yet most poor, vulnerably and constantly on the brink.

AYDM said ‘For the past three months, the AYDM has held a string of consultations with organized groups, socio cultural and community based groups spread across the south west areas, from lowland to highland, valleys, seashores, mountains, tropical and savannah where our people, rich and poor, the wretched and haves reside.  On Wednesday October 05, leaders of 121 groups capped the consultations with a meeting which took several hours,”

The group said it promises to campaign vigorously, ‘‘with all our strength, with all our sweat, our brain and even our brawl, through the streets, on the road, in the farms, on the sea shores, in the valleys, on the mountains, on the sea and on the land; on radio, on the social media and using all means of mass communications.”

It continued: “We have no illusion that the victory of Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu will lead to automatic transformation of Nigeria. The coming years will be very tough but there will emerge a better capacity and atmosphere to deal with the whirlwind and curtail its ruinous upsurge. Asiwaju will not totally resolve the problems facing Nigeria, however, we are clear in our perspective that his victory will lift Nigeria higher up from her present state of affairs to the benefit of all, irrespective of colour, creed, faith and religion.”

It noted that since 1914 when the great civilizations were merged by foreign interests, the country has been an atomic society in perpetual conflict with itself.

‘‘In 1914, a thick cloud of anomie descended on the destiny of primordial nations -including the Oyo empire, the Bini Kingdom to Kwararafa multi ethnic state, the Borno Empire which extended to today’s southern Libya, the Wukari Kingdom, the Itsekiri Kingdom-when by fiat, the autonomous nations were forced to live under a one -dimensional philosophy squeezed into one inconvenient whole.’’

The AYDM said in  coming to this conclusion, it considered many factors, the capacity and political sagacity of the candidate; the rich history in anti-fascist campaign of the 1980s through the 1990s, the possession of raw courage, liberal investment in pro-democracy struggle, a tradition of tolerance for dissent and above all, the ability to transform and reengineer the current APC as a political party likely to provide the impetus that will lead to the restructuring of Nigeria, being the minimum condition necessary for the growth and prosperity of the country.

“It is on this basis, that we, representatives of 121 Pan Yoruba, civil society, community based groups in the South West hereby adopt ASIWAJU AHMED BOLA TINUBU as our candidate and that of our people for the 2023 Presidential Election.”

The group said there is no doubt that in the past few years, the image of the APC has been bruised by the draconian forces in Abuja seen in their acts of tyranny and the illness of the economy under its watch and the insistence on sustaining a garrison structure for Nigeria.

‘It is naïve to assume that the biggest alternative for Nigerians is the PDP which had ruled Nigeria for 16 years characterized by rot, depression and melancholy. It is a mistake to think such a party would suddenly transform itself in 2023. This is not to diminish the fact that the APC has immense contradictions and should not be seen as an end in itself’

It said “in the context of Nigerian political framework and given the options available to the people, the APC is better but not the best, in our own opinion. Faced with a difficult situation in an extremely testy field, the Yoruba of the South West have to make a choice in 2023 considering the better possible options. From our own prior, informed consent and weighing the variety of choices available to the people of the south west, we have to pick a candidate near the prospect of allaying our fears as a people. In making this choice, we are not unaware of the rights of the people of the South West who may differ. We respect their opinions. We urge them to respect ours. Our choice is ours, their choice is theirs: On the field we shall meet.

The AYDM said those who hate Tinubu’s candidacy do so for many reasons one of which is their cruel hatred for anything Yoruba which they continue to propel using false narratives to justify their anger against the dignity associated with Yoruba heritage. “We have listened to those who argue that it is their turn. We posit that since 1960, when Nigeria gained independence, there have been 14 Presidents and Heads of State. Two of them ruled Nigeria twice. Out of the 12 Presidents and Heads of State, only one has been Yoruba, two were of Igbo extraction, Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe and Gen Aguiyi Ironsi)  two from Middle Belt (Yakubu Gowon and Abdulsalami Abubakar) one is Kanuri (Gen Sani Abacha), while four are of Fulani extraction (Gens Ibrahim Babangida, Mohammadu Buhari, Alhaji Shehu Shagari and Murtala Mohammed). It is mischievous not to admit that the history.’

Present at the meeting were leaders of    Oodua Peoples Congress, (OPC New Era), South West Progressive Youths and Peoples Movement, Covenant Group, O’odua Nationalist Coalition, (ONAC), Nigerian Automobile Technicians Association, South West, ANACOWA representing all Okada Riders in the South West, Okun Progressive Peoples Union, (OPPU), Oodua Descendants Union, ODU in Ivory Coast, Yoruba Peoples Union in Ghana, Kwara Progressives Alliance, (KPA) Itsekiti Peoples Liberation Movement, South West Hunters Union, Network for Yoruba Alliance, (NEYA), O’odua Peoples Congress, (Reformed), Yoruba Diaspora Coalition,(YDAC), Agbekoya Solidarity, South West Progressives Movement, (SWPM), Ilaje Renaissance Movement, (IRM), Ibile, Yoruba Farmers Cooperatives, South West Vigilante Coalition, (SWVC) and all the 121 members of the coalition. Groups in solidarity were Itsekiri National Front led by Oritsegbemi Temi, Supreme Egbesu Assembly led by Chief Digiwa Werenire, United Middle Belt Indigenous Peoples Congress, led by Barrister Abukar Onalor Onalo, Igbo Progressive Coalition,(IPC) led by former Secretary General of Ohanaeze, Dim Uche Okwukwu and Arewa Youth Forum led by Mallam Kudu Abubakar who was also the former Vice President, Arewa Youth Consultative Forum, (AYCF).

The statement was signed by Popoola Ajayi.

Super Eagles, Super Falcons Suffer Woes In Football

By Akinwale Kasali

The fortunes of the National male football team, the Super Eagles of Nigeria has kept dwindling after its failure to qualify for the upcoming FIFA World Cup slated for Qatar from November 21st to 18th November, 2022.

The Coach Jose Peseiro-led  Team has dropped from its Olympian height on the FIFA ranking, languishing in the 32nd position after poor outings in the month of September.

In the latest rankings released by the world football governing body, FIFA, on Thursday October 6, the Super Eagles  dropped to 32, losing 6.23 points after two poor matches against Algeria during the last international break.

Nigeria  lost  in Oran and drew 2-2 in the other game against the Desert Warriors home based team in Constantine, where Goalkeeper, Maduka Okoye’s howler gave the home- based Algerian team the lead, before Alex Iwobi and Cyril Dessers scored in the second half to give the West African side the lead.

Unfortunately, a late penalty for the Algerians salvaged a draw for the North Africans.

Despite dropping in the FIFA Rankings, Nigeria maintained its number four position in Africa.

Meanwhile, at the top of the ranking, five time champions Brazil remains the best football playing nation.

Brazil is top of the log after impressive outings against African giants, Ghana and Tunisia in September.

The Red Devils of Belgium remain second, with Brazil’s South American rivals, Argentina, in third position.

Former World Champions, France in fourth and England in fifth, complete the top five ranked nations.

In another development, the female National Team of Nigeria, the Super Falcons lost 2-0 to the Female Blue Samurai of Japan at the Noevir International Stadium, Kobe, in Japan in their International Warm Up encounter in preparation for the 2023 Women FIFA World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

Two second-half goals by Japan’s Mina Tanaka condemned Nigeria’s Super Falcons to a 0-2 defeat.

A string of brilliant saves by first-choice goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie kept Nigeria in the game in the first half.

The Falcons almost took a surprise lead when defender Ashleigh Plumptre struck the woodwork from a free-kick.

Japan went on to score when Tanaka chested the ball from a free-kick and slammed past Nnadozie in the 65th minute.

Her second goal came three minutes later, from the penalty kick spot, after a harsh challenge from Osinachi Ohale on an advancing Japanese forward in the Nigeria area.

ASUU: Jubilation After Appeal Court’s Order To Union To Resume Work

Many university students across the country are jumping for joy following the order by the Court of Appeal in Abuja, to the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU to resume work immediately.

The court made the order more than eight months after the university teachers embarked on strike to press home their demands from the federal government. The lecturers started the strike on February 14.

The court had on Wednesday directed both parties to settle the dispute amicably.

The National Industrial Court, NIC had earlier ordered the striking teachers to abandon the strike. They refuse by filing an appeal through their lawyer Femi Falana, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN.

The Court of Appeal ordered ASUU to return to work while ruling on an application by the union seeking permission for it to appeal against the order of the NIS which ordered the striking lecturers to resume duty.

The Court also granted ASUU “conditional leave to appeal the order of the Industrial Court, while insisting that ASUU must obey the order of the lower court with effect from today, October 7.

The 3-man panel led by Justice Hamman Barka said for ASUU to file its notice of appeal within 7 days, it must show evidence that its members have resumed work immediately, warning that failure to adhere to the order, will make the appeal incompetent before the Court of Appeal.

Reacting to the court order, some students who spoke with the magazine said they are happy that the universities will now be open for academic work.

“We have been at home for more than seven months. It’s good news that we are going back to school based on the court order. I hope the lecturers and government will now find a way to resolve the issue amicably,” Tayo Gabriel, a student at the University of Lagos said.

On his part, David Adebisi, who has just gained admission into Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ogun state said he’s “already packing his bag to go to school as a new student of the University. All that I’m thinking right now is to making new friends and settling down as a university student”, he said.

Meanwhile, the magazine learned that ASUU has conveyed a meeting on how to respond to the court order.

“The National Executive Council, NEC of the Union will meet to decide the way forward. The Union is law-abiding, and I believe our lawyer will advise us appropriately on what to do next,” a member of the Union’s NEC said, saying he wanted to remain anonymous because he has no authority to speak on the issue.

Contrary to claims by political analysts, Social Commentators and a section of Nigerians who describe Nigeria as a failed state, due to the appalling economic and insecurity situation, the All Progressives Congress, APC, Presidential Candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu says its not true. He has urged Nigerians to stop describing the nation as such.

The former Lagos State Governor urged Nigerians to stop buying into the narratives that the country is a failed state

Tinubu made this statement on retuning to Nigeria from London  where he had been in the past 11 days on vacation.

Addressing journalists amid shouts of ‘Jagaban’ and ‘City Boy’, Tinubu expressed his readiness for the political campaign.

He said, “The trip was very good. I enjoyed my break. And I’m happy to be back to my fatherland.

“And Nigerians should expect a very intelligent ability to think and perform. Nigerians should expect that the help they needed is here, the hope that is almost jittering is back and back actively.

“And we hold every effort to the country of patriotism, dedication, capacity and ability to do the job. Not negative thinking, not the fact that Nigeria has failed; this country is the greatest.

“If it is to rebuild, we are builders; if it is construction, we are constructors. If it is assurance, we give Nigerians the assurance that we definitely make a better country out of it all.”

2023: Tinubu Returns, Ayu Predicts Atiku’s Win

Bola Tinubu And Atiku Abubakar

Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC says he’s ready to get back to work.

The presidential hopeful returned to the country on Thursday after spending 12 days in the United Kingdom, UK for undisclosed reasons.

Tinubu spoke just as the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP Iyorcha Ayu said the presidential candidate of his party will win next year’s election by at least seven million votes.

The presidential race, close watchers of politics in the country said, will be a three-horse race between Tinubu, Atiku, and Peter Obi of the Labour Party.

While he was away, his political opponents raised issues about his health, saying he was not fit to be President and Commander-in-Chief.

The former Lagos state governor and APC National Leader fired back at his traducers saying he’s as fit as a fiddle.

He also released some pictures to prove that he was not been held down by any ailment as speculated by his opponents.

Speaking after his arrival, Tinubu said he was getting back to work immediately.

Tinubu said, “The trip was very good.

Ayu who spoke in Bauchi state during a stakeholders meeting said Atiku will defeat other candidates by a wide margin.

He said, “In a presidential election, if you don’t win Bauchi, you can’t win the presidency, and we are very sure that with what we saw today; the massive mobilisation that has been done, we are certainly on our way to victory.

“Atiku is your son, the North-East has never had a President before and yet, when democracy started, the North-East led the way with Alhaji Tafawa Balewa. Power is returning to the North-East, vote for your son, come out en masse, it is not enough to come for the rally.

“All of you should have a Permanent Voter Card make sure you campaign at your polling unit, don’t campaign only at rallies, we don’t want people in Abuja, everybody must go back home to his polling unit. On that day (election day), we will shock Nigerians, the victory margin is going to be seven million votes.

“Atiku Abubakar will move to the Villa and we will rescue the country from all the damages that the present government has done.

“We have suffered insecurity in the North-East, you are suffering from hunger, you are suffering from diseases. The PDP under the leadership of President Atiku Abubakar will correct these ills.”

Fresh Fear of Measles Outbreak, As Benue Records 2000 New Cases

0

The Benue state government has recorded over 2000 new cases of measles in the last eight months, according to Vanguard.

The newspaper report quoted the State’s Health Educator at the Primary Health Care Board, PHCB, Emmanuel Beeka who said that part of the discovery is a new variant of the pandemic that has mostly killed children in Northern Nigeria.

In 2019, over 200,000 died of measles across the world, according to the World Health Organisation, WHO.

“Measles killed an estimated 207,500 people in 2019 after a decade-long failure to reach optimal vaccination coverage, resulting in the highest number of cases for 23 years,” Tedros Ghebreyesus, the Director General of WHO said.

“The death toll in 2019 was 50 per cent higher than a historic low reached in 2016, and all WHO regions saw an increase in cases, adding up to a global total of 869,770.

“This year, there have been fewer cases, but the COVID-19 pandemic has further set back vaccination efforts, with more than 94 million people at risk of missing measles vaccines in 26 countries that have paused their vaccination campaigns, including many countries with ongoing outbreak.

“These data sends a clear message that we are failing to protect children from measles in every region of the world,” he said.

Last month 50 people were killed by measles in Rivers state as community leaders called for government intervention.

The communicable disease was said to have been noticed first in Amurouttoru-Kugbo community and later spread to Emago-Kugbo and Akani-Kugbo in the clan, causing fatalities among children.

The situation in Benue state, many insist, must receive immediate intervention to stop the disease from spreading.

Speaking in Makurdi, the state’s capital, Breaka said the state government is doing everything on its part to roll back the spread of an outbreak in the state.

Part of the ongoing efforts, he explained, is the decision of the state government to key into the national vaccination intervention that has already kicked off this month.

The Health Educator stated that the scope of the exercise had been expanded stressing that children of nine months to 59 months would be vaccinated for measles while for Oral Polio, those from zero to 49 months would get vaccinated.

He appealed to members of the public to take advantage of the vaccination opportunities.

He said, “In the last two to three months there was an outbreak of measles in about 18 Local Government Areas, of the state where measles was identified and it is for that reason that there is every need to massively vaccinate the targeted age groups to check the spread.

“Apart from measles and Polio, COVID-19 vaccine will also be given to the people who are within the age group so that they will be adequately vaccinated against COVID-19.

“This is just as birth registration too will be carried out simultaneously during the mass vaccination campaign at vaccination points so that all children who have not been registered can do so to enable them have their birth certificates.”

He also explained the ongoing effort of the government to eradicate polio in the country.

“We are also carrying out an outbreak response for Polio. That is the Polio variant. It should not surprised you because we had said we had eliminated Polio, but another variant is discovered.

“It is similarly very dangerous and in order to try as much as possible to totally eradicate it, the vaccination activities are going on because the variant has been identified in some LGAs and to avoid some elements of doubt, total vaccination activities are going to the targeted at children of 0-5 years and 9-59 months.

“So, the outbreak response is to try as much as possible to do away with that variant that has been discovered. In addition to that, the measles mass vaccination activities which we intend to carry out as well is for the same purpose,” he said.

Polio (poliomyelitis), according to WHO mainly affects children under five years of age.

One in 200 infections leads to irreversible paralysis. Among those paralysed, five to 10 percent die when their breathing muscles become immobilized.

As long as a single child remains infected, children in all countries are at risk of contracting polio. Failure to eradicate polio from these last remaining strongholds could result in a global resurgence of the disease.

Meanwhile, cases due to wild poliovirus have decreased by over 99 percent since 1988, from an estimated 350 000 cases, the world health body said, noting that six new cases were again discovered in 2021.

Burkina Faso: Ibrahim Traore Becomes World’s Youngest Leader

Ibrahim Traore

By Akinwale Kasali

Burkina Faso’s Junta leader, Ibrahim Traore, an Army Captain, has made history. The 34-Year old who came from obscurity to prominence, thanks to a coup d’etat, has become the World’s  youngest Leader.

Traore, the head of disgruntled young officers ousted Lieutenant-Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba, who had seized power just in January.

The motive for the latest coup – as in January – was anger at failures to stem a seven-year jihadist insurgency that has claimed thousands of lives and driven nearly two million people from their homes.

On Wednesday, Traore was declared President and “Guarantor of National Independence, Territorial Integrity … And Continuity Of The State.”

In becoming the world’s youngest leader, he succeeds  Chilean President Gabriel Boric, 36, who held the title.

Traore’s previously unknown face is now plastered on portraits around the capital, Ouagadougou.

His photo is even on sale in the main market, alongside portraits of Burkina’s revered assassinated radical leader, Thomas Sankara, and of Jesus.

Traore  was born in Bondokuy, in western Burkina Faso, and studied Geology in Ouagadougou  before joining the Army in 2010.
