Uzodimma’s Spokesman, Nwachuku, Admonishes Youths Against Wrong Use Of Internet

0

THE Chief Press Secretary/ Special Adviser (Media) to Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State, Oguwike Nwachuku, has admonished the youths against l the use of internet for information that are not credible and verifiable.

Nwachuku said internet facilities, if put to positive courses, will benefit the users in ways  that are unimaginable and advised the youths to think about it.

Speaking on the theme – Information Sourcing through the internet: What to believe – as Guest speaker at the inauguration of executive members/ youth summit of Youth Wing of Christian Association of Nigeria (YOWICAN) at the weekend in Owerri, Nwachuku said it is regrettable that the bulk of the fake and unfaithful reports emanating from the internet were from the youths.

“They belong to this era we call internet age. And they are the demography that has been caught by the new media fever or bug.”

The CPS said the global village predicated 58 years ago by Canadian thinker/philosopher and media theorist, Herbert Marshall McLuhan, which the internet is playing a key role as source of information, entails that the facility can only be used to advance the positive  courses of humanity.

Nwachuku cited several instances where the youths have used the internet to propagate fake news and forgeries that directly affected his office and that of the Governor, noting that by doing so, the authors deceived their audience and painted a different picture of the internet.

He advised the youths to desist from such acts except they will be comfortable to have their credibility, life aspiration and future ruined.

Nwachuku also called on parents, churches, schools, community leaders to implore their wards and the youths to run away from negative thoughts because they are a sin against God and mankind.

Other speakers include Dr. Mrs. Nnah Ann who spoke on – My generation as a peninsula for sustainable development – and former Owerri Capital Development Authority General Manager, Engr. Innocent Ikpamezie who spoke on – Youth and participation in politics.

The Amb. Robert Kennedy Asuzu-led Imo State YOWICAN executive was thereafter inaugurated by the leadership of CAN ably represented by Rev Divine Eches Divine, Chairman of CAN in Imo State, Hon. Amb. Belusochukwu Enwere, National Chairman of YOWICAN, Pastor Bede Nwoko, CAN Director if Education, Youth and Women Development  among others.

Hope Uzodimma donates Relief Material to Flood Victims at Egbema and Oguta

Reprieve came the way of flood-ravaged victims in Egbema and Oguta Local Government Areas of Imo State at the weekend as Governor Hope Uzodimma handed over to them different items that will help to cushion the effect of the natural disaster.

Hundreds of the internally displaced persons whose homes and farms were submerged by flood as a result of the over-flowing of Oguta lake and other rivers in Egbema and Oguta Local Government Areas of Imo State received relief materials, including food items from the State government to help cushion the hardship that had arisen from the natural disaster.

The relief materials were: 400 bags of 50kg rice, mattresses, pillows, blankets, cartons of indomie noodles, water packs, Jerry Cans, among others as well as hot meal of rice which was served the victims at the Camp where they were temporarily housed.

The Government also promised to provide the victims with at least one hot meal every day for the next two weeks.

Addressing the victims at the various camps at Abacheke in Egbema and Oguta Girls Primary School respectfully, Governor Uzodimma regretted that the unfortunate situation, caused by a natural disaster, occurred at a time of serious economic recession.

Governor Uzodimma who was represented by the Deputy Governor, Professor Placid Njoku, sympathised with the victims and assured them that Government will stand by them through out the challenging period.

He said everything possible would be done to alleiviate their suffering, including seeking assistance from National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

Governor Uzodimma charged the leadership of Egbema and Oguta Local Government Areas to ensure that the relief items are distributed to those they were meant for, and warned that they will be held accountable for any lapses.

The Governor further reassured the people that the Federal Government’s approval for the dredging of the Oguta lake and Orashi river would go a long way in mitigating the effects of disasters caused by flood in addition to bringing economic boost to the area.

Addressing his kit and kin at Abacheke, the Minister of Education State, Rt Hon Goodluck Nana Opiah thanked the Governor and Government of Imo State for coming to the rescue of his people when it mattered most.

He, however, requested the Governor to appeal to the Oil Companies operating in their areas to see reason to come and assist the people at a time like this, “a time of need.”

Opiah used the opportunity to inform his people that “Governor Uzodimma single-handedly nominated and recommended” him to the President to be made a Minister and requested them to join him in thanking him so much.

In his speech, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Imo State Oil Producing Development Commission (ISOPADEC), Chief Charles Orie said that “it is as a result of the Governor’s passion for the people of Ohaji/Egbema and Oguta that he approved that the various materials and food items be sent to them without delay.”

Orie enumerated the items, promising that the “palliatives and other assistance will continue to be provided until your lives must have improved substantially.”

Some of the leaders who spoke at the occasion such as the APC House of Representatives candidate for the area,  Chief Eugene Dibiagwu and the Sole Administrators of the two LGAs – O. Amadioha and Ofili Ijoma –  lamented the devastation brought about by the flood to farmlands, property and homes of the people and appreciated the government for bringing succour to the victims.

They however appealed for more assistance and relief items for other communities – Opuma in Egbema, Ezi-Orsu, Osemoto, Egbuoma all in Oguta,  among others in the two Local Government Areas.

Some of the internally displaced persons who decried the devastation to their farmlands and loss of crops noted that the latest incident was the worst they have experienced in recent times, since the 2012 and 2016 flood disasters.

It was on that note that one of them, Mrs Okwudili Okechukwu expressed her heartfelt appreciation to government for timely intervention with the relief items.

Also, Mr. Ochije Uzoma Bernard while thanking God that they survived the flood lauded Governor Uzodimma for coming to their assistance.

Alleged Ethnic Remarks: Keyamo Urges Nigerians To Reject Atiku

Festus Keyamo

By Ayodele Oni

THE spokesperson for the All Progressives Congress, (APC), Presidential Campaign Council, (PCC) Festus Keyamo, has called on the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP), presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, to quit the race.

Keyamo accused Atiku of playing the ethnic card ahead of the 2023 presidential election; hence, should quit the race.

He was reacting to Atiku’s comment that Nigeria needs a pan-Nigerian president and not a Yoruba or Igbo president in 2023.

The PDP candidate has however disowned the remark with his spokesman saying that he was misquoted.

Condemning the remark, the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, accused the PDP presidential candidate of bringing ethnic bias into his campaign.

In a series of tweets, Keyamo wrote: “This is the height of desperation and daredevilry on the part of Atiku!

“This is so horrendous, so horrible and so thoughtless for Atiku Abubakar to use ethnicity to campaign, saying the North does not need a Yoruba or Igbo candidate? My God! Atiku needs to quit the race TODAY!

“Some of his hirelings have brought out their hammers and nails to try to panel-beat this clear and obvious statement, instead of taking the route of honour to apologize to Nigerians or step down honourably from the race. No ‘repackaging’ or ‘panel-beating’ will repair this damage.”

In a statement by Paul Ibe, media assistant to Atiku said the statement credited to the PDP candidate was untrue.

According to him, Atiku had said that the credential of national inclusivity, not ethnicity should be an ideal that the Northern part of the country should examine in electing a new president for the country in the 2023 elections.

He noted that with a political career that spans more than three decades, Atiku stands shoulder high as a Northerner who has built bridges of unity across the country.

Quoting Atiku, “I have been in politics for more than three decades and I am a Northerner.

“So, if you ask me why I am the best candidate to lead Nigeria in 2023, I will simply say that what Nigeria needs is a pan-Nigerian president, not whether he is Yoruba, Igbo or Hausa-Fulani.”

Atiku, while delivering his speech at the event, highlighted the key policy agendas which he seeks to pursue if elected president to include promoting national unity through deliberate actions that will secure mutual trust and confidence amongst all tendencies.

The other policy areas that the former Vice President enumerated are reforms in education, agriculture and reversing the economic downturn of the country.

Obi Assures Equal Representation Between The Rich And Poor; To Wipe Out Gender Inhibitions

0
Peter Obi

The Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi has said that his Presidency if elected in 2023 will recreate a nation where the rich and the poor are equitably and fairly represented.

And where Citizens’ interests will supersede political interests and the existing trust gap between the government and the governed will be reduced to the barest minimum.

Obi’s view came in the remarks he made  at the weekend to the Queen’s College Lagos  old girls Association who were marking the 95th anniversary of their alma mater

The LP standard bearer said female representations in his government will be assured recalling that  as governor of Anambra State, his administration achieved close to a 60-40 gender balance in appointive and elective positions while that of federal government hovered around 30 to 35% , but he assured the women that his Presidency if elected “intend to progressively aim for between 35-40%, with aggressive gender mainstreaming action plan and rigid benchmarks”

He announced that education is central to his government policy thrust and said he will pursue a Marshal plan-type programme on education that incorporates compulsory technical and vocational skills, sports, entrepreneurship, programming, and digital skills from primary to the secondary level.

And ‘Inevitably, we will improve access to finance, MSMEs, youths and women, to significantly reduce unemployment and insecurity.

According to the former Anambra state Governor “We will introduce a mandatory “No Child left Behind” educational policy, mindful that Nigeria’s inadequate investment in the social sectors – health, education, and housing has resulted in the current dismal social and demographic trends reflected in low life expectancy, high maternal mortality rate, large number of out-of- school children, huge unmet housing needs as well high youth unemployment.

“Our government shall prioritize education to serve the following functions: technical and industry relevance; alignment with local comparative advantages and factor endowments; modern skills proficiency, critical thinking, ethical citizenship values, global competitiveness, and talent export.

Obi plans also will be to “prioritize a structured approach to developing the digital skills of our young population to give them the competitive advantage to receive offshore jobs in the new gig economy, while also improving the efficiency and productivity level of our economy”

“The Obi-Datti administration, when elected President of Nigeria, will sustain national development. Our governance principles, priority projects and programmes shall be anchored on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Obi noted that Experience shows that inclusiveness is an essential element in effective public policy making  pointing out that he intends to stop the under representation of critical components of the society in decision making such as women, youth, and the vulnerable in our midsts.

The Candidate told the Queen College Old Girls that if elected President he will “From its inception,  encourage investment in infrastructure, energy, transport, irrigation, and telecoms and education with gender mainstreaming and social inclusion in education, enterprise and politics will always be a priority.

Obi also expressed his Commitment to the well being of the Girl Child and Women pointing out that this will be fully reflected in his  broad and gender-specific policies.

He also plans to reset and reboot Nigeria in all ramifications –leadership and governance, security of life and properties, economic and political freedom and this according to the candidate “will entail the promotion of intangible assets that underpin democracy; namely, good governance, rule of law, security of lives and properties and robust institutions. There will be visible and measurable indices of governance the people can experience.

2023: Northern Group Says INEC Chair Working For South, Demands His Removal

0

Arewa Citizens’ Watch for Good Governance, ACWGG has called for the resignation of Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

In case he refused to resign, he should be sacked by President Muhammadu Buhari, the group said.

According to the group, the INEC boss is working against the interest of the north and working for the interest of the Southern part of Nigeria.

Citing the recently concluded voters registration exercise conducted by the electoral umpire, the group said the northern part of the country was shortchanged during the process, while more people were allowed to register in the south for next year’s general election.

For instance, the group said its request that the voters exercise be extended in some places in the region where there were security issues, was rebuffed.

It also accused INEC of registering foreigners in the Southern part of the country, adding that the exercise was carried out to favour the south.

According to the group’s leader, Mohammed Adamu, who spoke in Kaduna on Saturday, the INEC chairman must also confirm whether he’s being pressured to leave office, as it has been alleged in some quarters.

The group also stated that it would petition the President Muhammadu Buhari,  the National Assembly, the US Embassy, European Union, in it’s quest to ensure that the INEC Chairman is removed from office.

Adamu said: “As a group, we made frantic efforts to get INEC to extend registration in our region following the shutdown of telecommunications networks to enable our armed forces to carry out special operations in most Northwestern and North Central states, which fell on rocky grounds.

“The unfolding event is a pointer to one fact: INEC is deliberately working against Arewa, in their satanic ploy to suppress votes from our region, and swell that of Southern Nigeria through the registration of ghosts and foreigners.”

“That Prof Yakubu and members of his team should humbly resign so as to enable an independent probe into the allegation of insertion of foreigners’ names in our voters’ register.

“Where Prof Mahmood fails to resign, we will be forced to petition President Muhammadu Buhari, the Honourable Minister of Justice, the National Assembly, the US Embassy, the European Union, the British High Commission and other key actors in the electoral process on the danger of retaining the seeming compromised Prof Mahmood Yakubu.

“At the instance where we feel our demands are not being treated with needed gloves, we shall be forced to come out in our numbers and occupy all INEC offices in the region, including the national headquarters.”

The president of the Conference of United Political Party, CUPP, Ugo Chinyere, had last week, alleged of a plot by some powerful interest in the country to remove the INEC Boss from office.

High Level of Insecurity,  Lack of Investment in Agriculture Fueling Food Inflation in Country – Obi

0
Peter Obi

The Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi, has pointed out that the high level of insecurity and the apparent neglect of the agricultural sector, among other factors, are responsible for the prevalent soaring food inflation experienced in the country.

Obi, who made it known in a Message to mark the World Food Day 2022, argued that food inflation, which is biting hard on the country stems, mainly, from the high level of insecurity which made it impossible for farmers to return their farms and engage in their agricultural activities and food production. He pointed out that fighting insecurity will form his number one priority in office, when given access to power, because securing the nation will form the basis of any development, including massive food production.

He said “If you secure the country, the farmers will return to the farms, produce more foods and agricultural products, and food inflation will go down.”

He also explained that lack of investment in agriculture, caused by over dependence on oil proceeds, by the government, is another reason food inflation is hitting the roof. He reiterated his stand that the greatest assets Nigeria has are the large expanse of lands in the Northern part of the country.

“Borno State is 70,900km² in landmass, yet, they have uncultivated lands that are not yielding any productivity to the country. Sambisa forest, a vast farmland in Bornu State, is twice the size of Israel, which is just about 22,000km².

“Israel produces enough food for its population and for exports, while Nigeria can hardly feed the people.

“Borno State is twice the size of Netherlands, which is about 33,000km2 in landmass excluding water. Last year alone, Netherlands exported agricultural products worth of $120 billion, while Nigeria with a land mass of 923,770 km² cannot yet feed itself because we are depending on the now dwindling oil proceeds,” Obi said.

He expressed confidence that Nigeria, under his watch, will move from consumption to production and that there will be adequate food production in the country, through right investment in agriculture.

The World Food Day is celebrated on October 16 every year.

Ayu: “Why I Ignore Wike”; Warns Governor To Leave His Family Alone; Many Say Wike Crossed The Red Line

0
Iyorchia Ayu - PDP Chairman

By Adesina Soyooye

The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Dr Iyorchia Ayu has decried what he called the deliberate, consistent and unfortunate attacks on his person since the Presidential Primary by the Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike.

He said that he had all along restrained himself from responding to such attacks because he felt that as the father of the Party, he should concentrate on building and reconciliation.

Responding to Wike’s attacks for the first time in a press release signed on his behalf by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity,  Simon Imobo-Tswam, Ayu said he was doing so now because his family has been dragged in by Governor Wike.

Said Ayu: “The consistent attack on my person since the end of the Convention on the 31st of May are deliberate and unfortunate. I have restrained myself from reacting. As the father of the Party, I felt I should encourage reconciliation. But where it touches on my personal integrity, of which even my own family members are brought into play, it is incumbent upon me to reply.”

Wike had, at a Press interview held in Porthacourt on Friday, which was televised, made very serious allegations bordering on corruption and theft against the Ayu. He accused the National Chairman of collecting the sum of N100m from a Governor for a PDP project, and still went ahead to collect same amount for same project from the coffers of the Party.

Ayu, strongly denies the allegations. But he, as well as not a few Nigerians, took exception to Wike’s submission that Ayu’s children would deny him as their father if they know even a little of what Ayu has done. He also dismissed Ayu as a man without any integrity.

Wike: “If people know what we know, If we release what we have, Ayu’s children will go to him and say we are no longer your children.”

However, not a few people say by dragging Ayu’s children into the fray, Wike has crossed the borderline. They want Ayu to sue Wike the minute Wike loses his immunity on May 29, 2023. They also say that Wike should explain the source of the money he is spending and why, in the past couple of months, he and his team have been “living” in Europe instead of their States.

In the past couple of months, Wike and Co have visited Turkey, France, (allegedly), London (twice), and are presently in Spain.

In a detailed response to Wike, Ayu said:

“When my BoT Chairman talks, I am not supposed to say anything more. But since these allegations have persisted, I want to use this opportunity to clear the air.

“When the first allegation was made i.e. the N1billion – I decided not to respond because we don’t want to cause altercations in the party. However, I want to make it clear that at no time did I, as the National Chairman of this party, collect any N1billion from anybody.

“The consistent attacks on my person since the end of the convention on the 31st of May are deliberate and unfortunate. I have restrained myself from reacting. As the father of the party, I felt I should encourage reconciliation. But where it touches on my personal integrity, of which even my own family members are brought into play, it is incumbent upon me to reply.

“So, I state that I never collected N1bn from anybody. Also the N100m that was donated by one of the governors has been judiciously used for the purpose it was given. And in the next few weeks, we will be inviting all party leaders, including members of the press, to come for the commissioning of the PDI.

“When we came in and the party had funding difficulties, the current Presidential candidate suggested that the party should take a loan of N1bn from a bank. And the owner of that bank was also an influential member of this party. He has left the party now.

“But when we discussed with him, we discarded the idea. And the party never took any loan or any money from anybody. And, I, as a person never collected N1billion from anybody. Any money advanced to the party was declared before the National Working Committee (NWC) and handed over to the National Treasurer of the party.

“The party’s accounts are straight. They are up to date. And we promise to present the audited account to the public at the end of the year.

“Luckily, I had fully briefed the Board that one of our governors made a contribution of N100m to the revival of the Peoples Democratic Institute which was housed in a portacabin. And we explained to them that we hired an appropriate place in Asokoro; we have renovated it and furnished it.

“Two or three days ago, we went there to inspect the place. And the NWC decided that even before commissioning, we should invite the Governor in question to come and inspect what we have done with his money. I am happy to state that the National Secretary of the party has since written a letter to that Governor.

“So, it is not true. Neither I, nor the NWC ever took any party money to carry out the renovation. In fact, we have not even exhausted that N100m which was donated by one of the governors.”

Wike holds Ayu responsible for his loss to the PDP Presidential Candidate, Atiku Abubakar, at the Presidential Primary.

He and his team are demanding for  Ayu’s resignation as the Chairman  because, according to them, he and the Candidate (Atiku), should not come from same zone. They want Ayu to quit in favour of a Southern candidate.

Glamour As Ekiti Airport Witnesses First Flight

0

By Ayodele Oni

Saturday, October the 15th 2022, will remain an indelible date to people of Ekiti State as the first Aircraft touched down at the multi-million Naira Airport project started and completed by the administration of the outgoing Governor of the State, Kayode Fayemi.

The Jumbo Airline, owned by the Nigeria Airforce, marked NAF 930 landed  at the Airport, at exactly 10:23 in the morning to the admiration of Ekiti people, who had been waiting patiently to see if the efforts put in place will actually pay off as some people tagged the project a white elephant project.

But to their chagrin, Ekiti Airport hosted the first Aircraft since its creation about thirty years ago.

The mammoth crowd trooped to Aso-Ayegunle the community housing the Ekiti State Cargo Airport, to be part of the history making occasion; to witness the first flight into the multi-million Naira facility.

They trekked down the Airport as the road was totally busy, both young and old, with so much joy, a clear statement of acceptance of the Fayemi administration for bringing development to the state.

Many, including the Royal Fathers, and other dignitaries trekked the few kilometers dusty and bumpy road to the airport, as the number of vehicles and people were unprecedented, to witness the commissioning of the facility.

At a point, vehicles stood at a stand-still for over an hour on the same spot, as the narrow road to the airport could not contain the influx of people to the area.

As the NAF Jumbo 930 Aircraft landed on the runway of the airport,  people who came from far and near surged forward to touch the big bird, but were restricted by security operatives, who at a time were almost overwhelmed by the crowd.

Former Governor of the State and current Minister of Trade, Commerce and Investment, Niyi Adebayo, Minister of Aviation, Hadi Srika and other Eminent personalities from the State were on hand to savour the day, as Fayemi, Oyebanji and Adebayo led other members of the cabinet to receive the aircraft.

In a brief remark, Fayemi appreciated the good people of the State for believing in him and for their steadfastness and sincerity of purpose towards his administration.

He explained that his government has repeatedly been dogged and committed to ensure the completion of the airport project.

The Governor further said that the Airport would open another chapter of better economy and turn around the fortunes of the entire citizens.

When it fully begins operation, the Cargo Airport will offer exciting world-class facilities to travelers, businesses, Agro-allied produce and airline operators from across the world.
