Chieftains of the Yoruba socio cultural organization, Afenifere converged at the premises of the octogenarian leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti on Sunday to receive presidential candidate of the All Progressive Congress, (APC) Bola Tinubu.

Leaders including Chief Alani Akinrinade, Chief Olu Falae and other Chieftains in defiance of the stand of Chief Ayo Adebanjo, that is clamouring for a presidential candidate from south east, gave Tinubu a rousing welcome in Akure.

Chief Adebanjo, who is the national leader of Afenifere, has endorsed Peter Obi, candidate of Labour Party, (LP) believing that since south west has had its turn in the presidency, south east should be given a chance.

Tinubu, used the occasion of the visit to receive the blessing of the National Leader of Afenifere, Pa Reuben Fasoranti.

He will also present his Action Plan on how to reposition the country to greatness to the leadership of Afenifere, the Yoruba cultural and political organisation.

Bayo Onanuga, Director of Media and Publicity of Tinubu/Shetimma Presidential Campaign Council, stated that during the visit, Tinubu will present 80-page Action Plan document on how he intends to tackle the economic and other problems the country is grappling with to Pa Fasoranti and other leaders of Afenifere.

The manifesto, christened Renewed Hope, was formally launched in Abuja on 21 October by President Muhammadu Buhari.

According to the statement, “The APC torch bearer will speak on his plans before the Yoruba group, led by Pa Reuben Fasoranti.

“He will on Tuesday in Lagos discuss with the chambers of commerce in the South West on how he intends to improve the economy of Nigeria, to achieve a double-digit growth.”

It will be recalled that on penultimate Monday, Tinubu addressed a coalition of Arewa groups in Kaduna during which he highlighted the key elements of the plan, especially as they benefit the people of Northern Nigeria.

Police, Not Public, Deserves To Get Information On Security Threat – IGP

Alkali Baba Usman - IGP

By Ayodele Oni

The Inspector-General of Police, (IGP), Alkali Baba Usman, has said the information on security threat in the country ought to have been released to the police and not for public consumption.

The IGP cautioned foreign countries  in Nigeria about releasing such sensitive information, which has caused tension to residents of Abuja.

The IGP spoke while commissioning a police station and barracks in Ibusa, Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta State.

According to Usman, foreign countries should stop informing the public about terror alerts.

The United States and United Kingdom governments released a security alert, warning their citizens to be weary of their movement especially in Abuja.

In a travel advisory, they urged their citizens to stay away from Abuja due to the planned terrorists’ attacks.

They also urged their citizens to vacate Abuja until the terror alert is dealt with.

However, the IGP,  just like President Mohammadu Buhari has assured, promised members of the general public of their safety.

“How can you enter the country and said there is security alert, you didn’t inform the police, and you go around telling your people; don’t go to Abuja, return from Abuja.

“When you have information on security, it is proper to inform the police and we will find a way to tackle it, instead of taking it to the public.

“We are working in synergy with other security agencies to ensure the safety of residents.”

Commercial activities have slowed down at the Federal capital as some multinationals including construction giant, Julius Berger, directing their workers to remain at home.

It was also reported that some civil servants in Abuja now work from their private residents in order not to be caught unawares.

PDP Crisis: Ayu Says He Has Powers To Stop Governor Ortom’s Senatorial Ambition; Urges Tiv People To Back Atiku

0
Iyorchia Ayu - PDP Chairman

By Akinwale Kasali

The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Dr Iyorchia Ayu, has threatened to disrupt the Senatorial ambition of the Governor of Benue State,  Samuel Ortom.

Ortom is serving his second term as Governor, and has his eyes on the Senate in 2023. He is one of the four Governors led by Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, who are at loggerheads with the PDP since after Wike lost in the Presidential Primary, and was overlooked by Atiku in the choice of his running mate, for Delta State Governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa.

They are asking that Ayu steps down from office for a Southerner, or they would have nothing to the with Party’s Presidential Campaign.

In the past couple of days, both Wike and Ortom have raised the ante, making it clear, almost, that they would neither work for Atiku nor encourage their people to vote for him.

But,  Ayu,  during a visit to his kinsmen and Tiv people on Friday, October 28th, 2022,  said that he has the power to stop Ortom from realising his senatorial ambition on the platform of the party.

Ayu who spoke in the Tiv local dialect told his people that he had the power to stop any candidate under the party, particularly in the State;  to avenge all the attacks on him, but as a father of all, and in his quest to avoid a crack in the party,  he has decided to remain silent.

He said:  “I have been silent over all the things you are hearing against me because I don’t want any crack in the party I belong in my State, I have the powers to say you and you will not go anywhere because I will insist that I must sign before you go anywhere.

“But I have signed for all candidates produced by the PDP to go ahead in their dreams, whether I like it or not I signed.

“So I was doing that believing that I cannot shoot myself in the leg. I want Benue to come first by winning all elections so that Nigerians will say that the National Chairman has delivered his state to PDP with Alhaji Atiku Abubakar winning 90 per cent of the votes and Titus Uba as Governor in 2023.

“Nothing should worry you, my people. Since I started politics more than 30 years ago, you have never rejected me, you are always supporting me. They say a prophet has no respect in his home, but my case is different I am overwhelmed by this great show of love.

“The PDP is one and not divided. I am trying my best not to disappoint the Benue people and Nigerians in general, so if you hear that they want to chase Ayu out as national chairman, don’t be worried; nobody is going to sack me as national chairman of our party. I will leave the seat on a day that God permits.

“It is God that enthrones leadership, He uses people to enthrone a person over others and protects that person. I want to assure you that all these days, God has been protecting me even when I went on sick leave abroad, God is still protecting me.

“The Tiv people have suffered so much in this country. We are yet to get our share of the national cake, so my charge to you is not to relent in prayers so that this time around come 2023, God will give us a president who will work closely with the Governor of our state to wipe out our tears.”

Both men hail from Benue North West senatorial district, but the duo has been at loggerheads since the PDP Presidential Primaries that saw Governor Nyesom Wike lose to the Party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, leading to the call for the resignation of Ayu from the ‘Wike Camp’, that consist of Ortom, Governor Seyi Makinde and Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State.

The rift among them has polarized the Party in the State, as the Senatorial ambition of the Governor remain threatened. Ayu’s kinsmen in the Jemgbah axis are accusing the Governor of teaming up with others to pull down their son from his exalted office.

Urging the people to support Atiku’s candidacy, Ayu said, “Today, the standard bearer of PDP, Atiku Abubakar, who is not only a chieftaincy title holder of the Tiv people as the Zege Mule U  Tiv, he is my friend, he told me his plans for the Tiv nation. That he will wipe away the tears of our people.

“So nobody should try to bring any troubles to you. I am telling you today, PDP is one party, a party that has divisions and does not win elections. No matter the strength of any party, if it does not have unity, it will lose elections”, he concluded.

The Northernisation Of 2023: Dialogue With Nigeria

0
Akin Osuntokun

By Akin Osuntokun

“Conscious of this (Northern) hegemony and the fact that it does not have to be incompatible with the progress of Nigeria I have always argued that Northern hegemony, per se, is not the problem of Nigeria. It is the double jeopardy indicated in its abuse and wanton mismanagement that is the problem”. Whenever I write on the subject of Northern hegemony in Nigerian politics, I have always found the need to enter this rider to guarantee a fulsome understanding of my premises on the subject matter.

An underlying theme of the post independent political history of Nigeria is what has come to be characterised as a northern agenda and strategy whose defining feature is regional hegemony and supremacy. And it is deployed through three major instruments. First is the attribution of higher population to the North. Second is wielding the upper hand in the balance of terror equation. This objective was set in motion by the vision and calculation of the first generation of pre and post colonial northern political elite.

According to the Shehu Yaradua foundation “For the generation of the late Shehu Yar’adua for instance, ‘joining the army in 1962 was a statement of political faith. A politically better informed Northern elite had come to recognise the neglected significance of the military in independent Nigeria. President Mohammadu Buhari equally weighed in ‘’the Emir of kano told one of us that if soldiers could overthrow a line of kings descended directly from the prophet in Syria, it could happen anywhere. So we should go and join the army’’.

Third is a pan Islamic isolation and insulation of the northern region from the cosmopolitan accretion of european modernisation especially British missionary activities (with the inherent effect of rendering the masses malleable and captive to politico-religious manipulation). This was the condition precedent that the northern traditional and political elite requested at the entry point of their colonial incorporation into amalgamated Nigeria. The request suited the ulterior motive of the colonialists to be spared the burden of direct governance of the region-on account of which the British readily acquiesced. The ensuing rapport marked the commencement of a mentor/protege relationship between the two that views Nigeria through the prism of the Northern standpoint.

The deleterious effect of this dispensation (to which the British are complicit) is the attendant weaponisation of ignorance and stratified class system predicated on a pseudo theocratic order. These three elements: a permanently contrived higher population advantage; stranglehold over the powers of coercion and the insulation of the electorate from extra regional political mobilisation and recruitment, have combined to vest the regional political elite with the semblance of a veto power over the political direction of Nigeria. The power rotation convention was directed at the mitigation of making this veto a relative rather than an absolute power politics instrument. The question that arises is how has this foregoing understanding play out in the current electoral cycle?

The first significant categorical challenge to the power rotation assumption emanated from the ranks of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP with the show stopper postulation by my big brother Raymond Dokpesi. In playing John the baptist to the candidacy of vice-president Atiku Abubakar he advanced the thesis ‘that the only chance the PDP has in winning the 2023 presidential election is by fielding in a northern candidate, specifically from the North-east zone and preferably the former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’.

Prior to this statement of intent, the Atiku Abubakar faction of the party had railroaded Dr Iyorchia Ayu into office as party chairman. With Ayu (from the North) as chairman, the two-plus-two-equals-four-equation is the presupposition that the presidential candidate of the party will emerge from the other half of the country. Right? Wrong. Impervious to the supposition and the bigger assumption of power rotation, Abubakar emerged the presidential flag bearer of the PDP.

Lurking in the corner and aiming to take a cue from the outcome of the PDP presidential primaries, the APC actually postponed its presidential primaries to tailor its political calculations accordingly. Regardless of the twists and turns on the road to the primaries, the APC passed the muster test of the power rotation political correctness with the emergence of Governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the presidential candidate. Or so it seemed.

What the party gave with the right hand, it took back with the left hand when Tinubu and the party caucus settled for a Muslim as his vice-presidential candidate namely Senator Kashim Shettima. Now, the former governor of Borno state is not just another Northern muslim, he came loaded. He was governor of the Borno state epicentre at the height of the fury of the insurgency. If the suspicion is correct that there was an opaque relationship between the northern political elite and the Boko Haram insurgents, all fingers point at Shettima as the manager of such a pact. For good measure, he has let the cat out of the bag that as potential vice-president he is going to usurp the powers of his health compromised principal and function as the defacto president.

The inference from the pandering of these two presidential tickets is that the Muslim North electorate has become a deity whose wrath can only be appeased with a clear political acknowledgement of its preeminence and superiority to the other segments comprising the Nigerian population. If the PDP had chosen a northern muslim as its candidate, the APC believes the only way it can match this appeasement is by doubling down on its Islamic credentials. Hence the Muslim Muslim presidential ticket of Tinubu and Shettima. Which leaves us with the only balanced ticket among the contenders, the Peter Obi/Baba-Ahmed pair and to which any hope of the salvation of Nigeria belongs.

Governor Nyesom Wike is not my cup of tea but regardless of his motives, he is spot on with the categorical request that once Abubakar emerged as the PDP presidential candidate, Ayu, from the north, should not hold the position of the party chairman, a minute longer. I cannot imagine any wanton abuse of the winner takes all mentality worse than an argument to the contrary.

If ever there was a needless provocation, this is one. By what definition of equity and justice can we claim the retention of Ayu is the right thing to do? How does the resultant aggravation of the North/South divide square with the advertisement of Vice-President Atiku Abubakar as a political unifier? Wike has thus been handed full measure of the propaganda field and has ceased it with characteristic indignation and bluster. He rails

“We have finished presidential primaries, we have a presidential candidate. Is Wike saying remove presidential candidate? Is Wike saying remove vice&presidential candidate? So, what are you begging me for? All I am saying, and I will continue to say is that you have taken president, give us (national) chairman.

“I’ve accepted the presidential candidate, I have accepted the vice-presidential candidate, what’s the problem again. You, fulfil your part. Let the South have something, that is all I’m preaching. You cannot have presidential candidate, national chairman, director general of the campaign.”

‘The Governor said it was hypocritical for some people in the PDP to criticise Muslim/Muslim ticket, while supporting that a particular region of the country should retain the presidency for another eight years’ He insisted that for the sake of holistic peace, PDP should adhere to the tenets of its constitution, which explicitly recommended that when a presidential candidate emerged from the north, the national chairman should be from the South’. In the event, the PDP presidential ticket has been hemorrhaging profusely in the South partly of its own making and partly on account of the inadvertent factor of the Peter Obi presidential run.

Smarting from this pressure, Abubakar has found the compulsion to play the northern ethnic card by increasingly casting himself as the northern candidate out to do battle with the Igbo and Yoruba. Not quite in character, Abubakar charged “I think what an average northerner needs is somebody from the north who understands other parts of Nigeria and who has been able to build bridges across the country. That is what the north needs,” Mr Abubakar said in a now viral video. “It (Northern Nigeria) doesn’t need a Yoruba candidate or an Igbo candidate. This is what the northerners need. So I believe I stand before you as a pan-Nigerian of Northern origin.” You get the drift?

Ekpeyong Lashes Akpabio, Says He Has Been Rejected By The People

0
Senator Chris Ekpenyong and Senator Godswill Akpabio

By Akinwale Kasali

Senator Chris Ekpenyong representing Akwa Ibom North-West (Ikot Ekpene) Senatorial District, has mocked former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godswill Akpabio. “You have been rejected by the people of Akwa Ibom”, Ekpenyong told Akpabio.

Ekpeyong dismissed Akpabio as a comedian and a serial loser who has failed to realize that the electorate has rejected him and will not stop rejecting just the way they did in 2019.

He advised the former Akwa Ibom State Governor to shelve the ambition of contesting for the Senatorial Seat of the district in 2023, as it is basically a waste of time.

Ekpenyong’s strong word was in response to  Akpabio’s statement at the inauguration of his ( Akpabio’s) Senatorial Campaign Council for the Ikot Ekpene senatorial district on Thursday, where he claimed that he won the 2019 election but the results were manipulated in favour of Ekpenyong.

Akpabio: “The people of Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District want to use this election to prove to the world that their son, Senator Godswill Akpabio, won the senatorial election in 2019 but the results were manipulated against him and one of those who took part in that heinous crime, is today cooling off in prison.

“The outcome of that election was taken to Uyo against what the law says and the rest is now history. Another opportunity now beckons for the good people of Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District to prove a point, that their votes was for me in 2019.

“Let me also caution our supporters, whoever brings money to you, collect it but vote your conscience because your vote will surely count this time around. Don’t swear to any fetish oath.Vote APC all the way. Don’t allow the ongoing court case challenging the candidacy of Obong Akan Udofia to deter you, he remains the candidate of the party.

“A vote for me to go to the Senate is a vote for appointments, human capital development, Scholarship and empowerment and taking Akwa Ibom to the centre of national politics”.

Ekpeyong showed his displeasure at the utterances of Akpabio by issuing a Press Statement Saturday, October 29th, 2022, in response.

Signed by his Press Secretary, Providence Essien, and titled, “The Return of the National Comedian” the statement said such falsehood by Akpabio can only come from a man “who is still living in his false dreams after many years of being rejected by the electorate”.

The statement reads in part:

“The attention of the Senator representing Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District in the National Assembly, has been drawn to a false allegation made by the defeated Warsaw general, Godswill Akpabio where he claimed he won the 2019 Ikot Ekpene Senatorial election and was short-changed.

“For the avoidance of doubt, and in order to set the record straight, the Distinguished Senator wishes to state the following: That Senator Godswill Akpabio should not forget that he was defeated twice in the 2019 Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District election: first at the general election and second, at the rerun to the glory of God to whom he (Akpabio) was equating himself;

“The event of 2019 election was a case of a man against the people and the will of the people won; that Akpabio should not forget that prior to that election which he lost, he had likened the election to a football match between Akwa United and Arsenal, in which by the grace of God Akwa United won Arsenal United.

“That the people of Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District would not have voted a man who was generally rejected, even by his people in Essien Udim local government where he also lost; and as an elder brother to Akpabio, I will like to advise the former governor to forget about contesting next year’s election. Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District cannot choose the selfish and self-centred interest of a single man over and above the brotherhood and peaceful coexistence of the Senatorial District.

“That we in Ikot Ekpene federal constituency and other federal constituencies in the Senatorial District cannot cheat our brothers in Abak 5 now that it is their turn to produce a senator.

“That Senator Godswill Akpabio should stop using reverse psychology on the people. This same method he used in the past cannot work again. He should face the truth – this is the turn of Abak 5 and no amount of his public tears can reverse this decision of the people.

“That Senator Akpabio should go and rest. The people said so in 2019 through the ballot and will say same again in 2023; Godswill Akpabio should step aside and allow Abak 5 take their turn and stop this joke he is going around cracking because it will not work.”

Both men will meet at the polls in February 2023, at the Senatorial polls.

Yesufu: “2023 election is an election for survival. We are not only voting for ourselves, we are also voting for our children and our grandchildren, and the generation yet to come, we want Mr Peter Obi to be in office, I will hold him accountable, we’ll ensure he works for the people…”

In his words, Obi said it is disheartening that in few weeks now the 2022 FIFA World Cup will commence in Qatar and Nigeria that is regarded as the giant of Africa and a footballing powerhouse will not have its flag hoisted at the world championship due to our failure to qualify.
