National Security Adviser (NSA), Major General Babagana Monguno, rtd, has assured Nigerians that there is no cause for alarm, despite recent security alarm raised by foreign countries, including the US, UK and Canada.

The NSA, who said the situation is under control, described as false and irresponsible the perception of heightened insecurity in Abuja as painted by the UK and the US.

Monguno made the disclosure on Monday at a briefing after a Security Council Meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari at the State House.

He insisted that the alert was for American and British citizens and that the way it was released complicated the situation.

According to him, the alert was simply an unnecessary distraction and nothing untoward so far.

The NSA advised Nigerians to go about their daily activities without fear, saying that the security agencies are in control and that Nigeria as a country is safe.

In attendance at the meeting were Vice President Yemi Osinbajo; Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha; the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, Ahmed Abubakar, as well as the Chief of Staff to the President, Ibrahim Gambari.

Also in attendance were the Minister of Defence, Major General Bashir Magashi (rtd); Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola; and Minister of Police Affairs, Mohammed Dingyadi.

The Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor led the service chiefs including the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Farouk Yahaya; Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Gambo; the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Isiaka Oladayo Amao to the meeting.

Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari is expected to leave for London Monday for a medical check-up.

His Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, announced this in a tweet on his verified personal handle earlier in the day.

He said the President will return to the country the second week of November.

The President had cancelled his planned inauguration of the new Technology and Innovation complex of the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) to preside over an emergency meeting of the National Security Council.

However, he travelled to Owerri, Imo State to flag off the Conference and Retreat for Senior Police Officers before departure for Europe on Monday.

A commercial vehicle driver in Ekiti state will spend the rest of his life behind the bars for not being able to control his sexual urge.

An Ekiti State High Court sitting in Ado Ekiti sentenced 42 year old Ilesanmi Adewale to life imprisonment for raping a 16 year old girl in Isan Ekiti, Oye Local Government Area of Ekiti State.

The convict, who was arraigned before Justice Monisola Abodunde on 16/12/2021 committed the offence on 13th February, 2021 at Isan Ekiti, when he raped a

16 year old girl.

The offence, according to law is contrary to section 31(2) of the Child’s Right Law, Cap. C7, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.

In her statement to the Police, the victim said, “my father sent me to Iludun Ekiti from Isan Ekiti to bring his ATM card and a sum of N8, 000 he kept at home.

“On my way back to Isan, I boarded the convict’s car, I was alone with him in the car, he first touched my breast, I warned him to stop it.

“On getting to a bush between Isan and Iludun, he stopped the car, I opened the door and ran away, he chased and caught me.

“He carried me on his shoulder to a nearby bush with cutlass in his hand, he threatened to kill me with the cutlass if I refused to cooperate, he removed my pant and forcefully had sexual intercourse with me.

“During the process, I was shouting, I bit his hands, and tore his cloth, yet he refused to leave me. He had collected my father’s ATM card and N8, 000 from me, he gave it back to me and begged me not to tell my father.

“When I got back to the road, I saw my father on a motorcycle, I narrated what happened to him, the driver was arrested and later taken to the Police station.”

To proof his case, the prosecutor Folashade Alli called three witnesses and tendered one pant, a big cutlass, medical report, defendant statements among others as exhibits.

The defendant in his own defense, spoke through his counsel, T.J. Omidoyin, but called no witness.

In his judgment, Justice Abodunde said, “the crime of rape of minor is assuming a frightening dimension in this jurisdiction.

“I cannot contradict the terms imposed by the law. The mandatory provision is that, once a defendant is convicted of rape, he is liable to imprisonment for life.

“Based on the above reasoning and in strict adherence with the provisions of the law, I have no alternative than to sentence the defendant to life imprisonment and I so hold.”

A former Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics) of the University of Ibadan, Professor Adigun Agbaje, has relieved a little of his ordeal in the hands of Kidnappers. He will tell the full story later.

Agbaje, a Professor of Political Science, currently on sabbatical at the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye, where he is The Chair of the Oba Sikuru Adetona Institute For Governance, was kidnapped on Friday along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway at about 6.00pm.

Agbaje was released Sunday evening after spending two gruelling nights in the forest with the Kidnappers.

Now in a hospital where he is undergoing full medical checks, he disclosed that he was shot on the head.

In a note of appreciation dated 31st, October, 2022, to his family, friends and colleagues who facilitated his release, which he authorised his son, Adewale Agbaje to release, Agbaje expressed deep concern for five other people who he left behind in the Kidnappers’ den.

The five people, he said,  are two young ladies (of same parents whose family say were on their way to a birthday Party), two young men, and a middle aged man.

His kidnappers had earlier asked for the sum of N50m as ransom money for his release, and the sum of N10m for each of the other five people. It is not known, yet, how much was paid to them before the Professor’s release. He was on his way to Ibadan when he was kidnapped.

Following is the full text of his statement,  as released by his son, Adewale.

LETTER OF APPRECIATION

Personal note of appreciation from Prof Adigun Agbaje, chair of the Oba Sikiru Adetona Institute for Governance at the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye, and former DVC (Academics) of the University of Ibadan

“My father, Prof Adigun Agbaje, recently released by kidnappers, has asked me to issue the statement below on his behalf.

…..I was shot at the head

…..Am undergoing comprehensive health checks

“It’s a new day today and I’m happy to be alive. I was released by my kidnappers yesterday evening after spending two nights in the thick forests of Ogun and Oyo states.

“My mind goes to the five others who are still left with the kidnappers: two young ladies, two young men and a middle aged person.

“I was shot at in the head during the abduction process. I thank God that the bullet that went through my car’s windscreen left only a skin deep wound on my head even though it left a gaping hole in the cap I was wearing. I did not even know about this till Saturday morning when I saw caked blood on my cap.

“I am undergoing comprehensive health checks and so it may take some time to thank all my family, including my in-laws, friends and in-laws to my children, my own friends, colleagues and all Nigerians.

“For now I want to thank the following former and current Vice Chancellors of the University of Ibadan: Prof Olufemi Bamiro, Prof Isaac Adewole, Prof Idowu Olayinka and Prof Kayode Adebowale, my colleagues at the University of Ibadan and other Universities at home and abroad, current and former students, including Mr Fisayo Soyombo, for their wonderful support and generosity to my family, top government, military, and other security officials. I am quite grateful for all your efforts.

“You all kept hope alive and ensured that the sensitive negotiations came to a successful end when I regained freedom yesterday evening.

“As stated earlier, my heart goes to those young female undergraduates, the young men and the middle aged person I left behind with the kidnappers. I may not be reachable now but as soon as I get medical clearance from my doctors, I will be thanking all of you personally.”

Lagos 2023: Jandor Lashes Fani-Kayode; Says He’s Without Integrity

0

By Akinwale Kasali

The Governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP,  Lagos State, Olajide Abdul-Azeez Adediran, popular as Jandor, has lashed out at  Femi Fani-Kayode, Director of the Special Media Projects of the Tinubu/Shettima Presidential Campaign Council, for calling him mentally challenged to have conceived the idea that he was going to defeat incumbent Governor, Babajide Sanwo Olu at the polls.

The derogatory statement made by the former Aviation Minister prompted the PDP Governorship Candidate to slam him.

Fani-Kayode had in a Statement said Governor Sanwo-Olu had proven to be a worthy son of the All Progressives Congress’ Presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, for his achievements in the State.

He added that, “If the strange young man with the equally strange name of “Jandor” honestly believes he has a hope in hell of defeating Babajide Sanwo-Olu in next year’s governorship election in Lagos State, then he must be seriously ill and/or mentally challenged.”

In a tweet, Jandor in his reaction to Fani-Kayode’s statement stated, “In Yoruba land, elders earned the honour they were accorded because of the wisdom with which they lived their lives and conducted their affairs. It is nearly impossible for anyone to take Mr. Femi Fani-Kayode serious.

“Femi Fani-Kayode’s personal life has more than enough scandal to discredit him, but out of respect for many, who have been harmed by his actions especially women and his employees, we will stick to his political career.

“For every attack that Femi Fani-Kayode has launched against a politician, government official or political party, there is a corresponding statement where he contradicts himself with praises said to the person, official or political party.

“The moment you are able to sprinkle little corn for the fowl, Fani Kayode goes back on his words without remorse and betrays his closest associates.

“This is consistent across his entire political career and affirms what we all know, that he is a man who is motivated only by personal gain and will go anywhere, and say anything provided it gives him proximity to power and takes care of his stomach.

“It is only a matter of time, his attention would turn positively to Jandor the moment we take over the Lagos House, which we will certainly do by May 29, 2023…just wait and see.”

Jandor said that it is so disheartening that just a year after Fani-Kayode who swore he would personally work to remove All Progressives Congress, APC, from office over incompetence and complicity in the 2020 #EndSARS protests, went back to his vomit, which basically shows he lacks integrity.

“If anything, this attempt at character assassination, barely one week after our convoy was attacked by sponsored thugs and 48 hours after fake news was leaked to the press that 5,000 Jandor members decamped to the All Progressives Congress, proves what we already knew; the APC is frightened that its hold on Lagos has weakened and grasping at whatever straws to hold on to power.

“We will win at the polls next year and I am very sure Fani Kayode will come begging for a spokesperson job as he can’t survive outside the corridors of government, and guess what, we will engage him.”

Commuters Stranded As Commercial Bus Drivers Begin Seven-Day Strike

0
Commuters Standed in Lagos

By Akinwale Kasali

The seven-day strike by Commercial Bus Drivers which began Monday is having a toll on commuters. They are stranded at various Bus stops and Parks, unable to get to their various destinations and work places.

The few available Commercials

Buses and Private Car owners using their vehicles for commercial purposes have hiked the fare by 100 per cent.

For instance, from Iyana Ipaja to Ikeja which was N300 increased to N500, while Iyana Ipaja to Oshodi that waa usually N300 increased to N700.

Iyana Ipaja to Yaba that was usually pegged at N400 was increased to N1000, making Commuters to resign to fate. Some were forced to go back home, some waited patiently for Buses that could be cheaper than the others.

At Ojodu Berger area of the State, Commuters were stranded at the Bus Stops with no commercial Buses in sight.

The commercial bus drivers under the aegis of the Joint Drivers Welfare Association of Nigeria, JDWAN,  commenced a seven-day boycott of Lagos roads following its failure to reach an agreement with the State Government.

The group, in a statement by its lawyer, Ayo Ademiluyi, said it had been subjected to indiscriminate extortion and violent harassment by the Management of Parks and Garages in the State.

The statement reads in part:

“As commercial drivers in Lagos State under the aegis of JDWAN, we are left with no choice than to embark on seven days of protest and boycott of services over multiple and excessive extortions by the management of parks and garages in the state.

“We have notified members of the public and the Lagos State Government over multiple and excessive extortions by the motor parks and garages management.

“The cost of transportation affects the cost of goods and services and consequently the cost of living, which has spiralled astronomically in Lagos State as a result of the effect of motor parks excessive and illegal ticketing and tolling at almost every bus stop.”

The group alleged that its members lost half of their income to motor park ticketing, stating that they get arrested whenever they refuse to pay for the tickets.

The group said: “No to charging drivers three passengers money after loading in parks or garages; we kick against paying motor park thugs at every bus stop; harassment of law enforcement agencies & intimidation with guns, cutlasses, broken bottles by LASTMA, task force and RRS must end immediately; we demand that the Lagos State Government should provide official bus stops in each community to avoid incessant arrests and stress for commuters who complain of having to trek several kilometres back to their bus stops.”

Terror Alert: Buhari Holds Emergency Meeting With Top Security Chiefs

0

Amidst the security challenges across the country President Muhammadu Buhari has summoned an emergency security meeting with security chiefs in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

Top on the agenda of the high-level meeting, the second in less than a month, the magazine learned, will be the government’s readiness to respond to the recent security threat to the nation’s capital, Abuja, by terrorists.

Those expected at the meeting include the Chief of Defence Staff, the three service chiefs, Inspector-General of Police, Director-General of Department of State Service, Director of Military Intelligence, among other top military and security chiefs.

Others expected to attend the meeting include the Minister of Defense and the National Security Adviser, Major Gen. Babagana Mungonu (rtd).

The meeting is coming on the back of the kidnap of a former deputy Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Prof. Adigun Agbaje along the Lagos Ibadan expressway at the weekend.

Similarly, five state governors in the south east also held a meeting in Enugu to draw attention to the heightened insecurity in the region.

Garba Shehu, Senior Secial Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity said on Sunday that the president has canceled all other events earlier scheduled for today in order to meet with his security top brass in the country as commander-in-chief.

’The President, who was initially scheduled to commission the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure new Technology and Innovation Complex, will receive briefs from the security chiefs, and interject on areas that need more attention,” Shehu said in a statement yesterday.

The United States had last week alerted the country on the plan by Boko haram and ISWAP to attack the Federal Capital Territory, FCT. The US had since evacuated its embassy staff in Abuja, apart from issuing an advisory for its citizens to leave the country, ahead of the planned terrorist attack.

But in response, the federal government has assured Nigerians in Abuja to go about their duties, and that it’s doing everything on its part to provide security.

The president’s meeting with top security chiefs in the country, the magazine learned, is one of the efforts being taken by the government to assure Nigerians that the country is safe.

Speaking on the steps being taken by security agencies to provide security in the nation’s capital, the FCT Police spokesperson, Josephine Adeh disclosed that the Commissioner of Police, Babaji Sunday has been meeting with residents and other stakeholders with a view to averting any terrorist attack.

She said this is being done in order to assure the residents and to encourage people to volunteer information in case they notice any strange activities around them, adding that the meeting is not meant to cause apprehension in the FCT.

According to Adeh, “this is a routine, and it was not borne out of the reported imminent terror attack alert making the rounds.

“Our duty is to secure the FCT, the people, and their properties, and we have been doing that even before now, and we’ve intensified our operation since the alert.

“The CP had met with hotel and high-rise building owners to ensure the installation of CCTV cameras on their premises for security reasons. He had met with estate owners not to allow hotels in the estates which are residential areas. We also relate with public transportation workers’ unions to ensure they know their drivers and workers. He has met with garden owners too, all to ensure security and safety.”

Speaking on the US alert last week, the Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed assured Nigerians that the federal government will provide security and safety across the country.

“I can assure all that our military and other security agencies have continued to do everything possible to secure and protect Nigerians and foreigners living in Nigeria.

“Terrorists have been hard hit and put on the run. Bandits have been decimated and scattered. Our country is safer today than at any time in recent times, thanks to the sacrifice of our men and women in uniform,” Mohammed said.
