OPINION: “Foolish Is Not Igbo”

0
Azubuike Ihejirika

By Azubuike Ihejirika (Former Chief Of Army Staff)

BACKGROUND:

  1. Since 1999, the SouthEast had belonged to the ruling political party at the centre—Federal Government — which we had overwhelmingly voted for in all past elections, and the party had over 15 unbroken years in power.

Most Igbo elites of today (political, socio-cultural, business, and to some extent, clerical), made their fortune and fame during that period. The ruling party lost presidential election in 2015, and a new coalition party came to power. This category of Igbo elites were angry at the loss of political offices and influence, with the perquisites involved; patronage in contracts and appointments into the boards of Federal Government MDAs, etc.

They could not come to terms with the change.

  1. Even before the new President was sworn-in, the pro-Biafran IPOB group, (Indigenous Peoples of Biafra) which had campaigned for the then ruling party in 2014, had started a vicious campaign of hate, abuses and lies against the President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, and his ethnic group, and the North in general. The disgruntled elites kept supporting and fueling the campaign.

It didn’t matter that SouthEast was visibly getting more infrastructural development in the fewer years of the present Federal Government than it got in the longer period of the past ruling party. All that ruled the day were anger, hate, venting the spleen, pull-down-the-roof mindset.

  1. The IPOB pro-Biafran agitation had been an umbrella for sundry youth criminal groups: armed robbers, cultists, ritualists, fraudsters, drifters, etc. Their common uniting factor is anachist inclination and proclivity for violence, which is justified as a necessary requirement of a “revolution” to first destroy the existing system, and when the “revolution” has succeeded, then you rebuild everything better. The youths were brainwashed on such diet. The various groups cooperated in sourcing for arms and ammunition for the “revolution”, to imbue themselves with greater authority. The disgruntled elites promoted and supported it, as long as it was primarily directed at the Federal Government and its facilities in the SouthEast. The elites never believed in any Biafran “revolution” though. They knew it cannot happen. The campaign was all provocative rascality, insults and abuses in a running hate propaganda and lies, being juiced with doctored and photo-shopped video clips and a steady flow of fake news. And it was all sweet melody as long as it was directed at President Buhari and his Government.

4 Sample:  There are four (4) Military Service Chiefs, and normally, two come from the North, and two from the South. It is still the same under the present Federal Government. But you could hear every imaginable twisted narrative and lies about marginalisation and sectionalism against the South and the Igbos in particular.

Since this 4th Republic started in 1999, Nigeria has had four (4) Presidents, including the present one. Two had come from the South (Obasanjo and Jonathan from SouthWest and SouthSouth respectively), and two from the North (Yar’ Adua and Buhari, both from NorthWest). So, out of the six geopolitical zones, three have produced the President and three have not. This is public knowledge.

  1. You can hear some highly placed Igbo leaders/opposition politicians shouting loud and clear that only the SouthEast has not produced a President since 1999 while all other zones have done so, and that this is injustice and inequity against Igbos and that Nigeria cannot survive without justice and equity.

That’s like insulting the sensibilities of other members of the Nigerian space, as well as issuing a threat. And those leading this chorus are well educated, very knowledgeable and internationally exposed persons who the less educated and ignorant masses look up to for facts and guidance.

When the base human emotions, the animal human nature, takes over, intellect and enlightenment is relegated. Such brazen lies are told to whip up rash emotions and victimhood mindset which lead to dishing out insults, abuses and hate speech against some other members of the Nigerian space.

  1. You cannot win the free-will votes of Nigerians by such method. Or do we think we can go to court, obtain an injunction, then come back to nominate a President which Nigerians must accept without voting, or must vote for, all because “it is our turn”? Meanwhile, some other leaders from other parts of the country have been busy building and mobilising grassroot support from across the zones, with a view to gaining their votes in next year’s presidential election.

Are we expecting they should do the cultivation labour and then hand over the harvest to us, because “it is our turn”?  Foolish is not Igbo.

  1. Some of our loud voices believe so much in Josef Goebbels’ strategy of Big-Lie: Tell the lie boldly and repeatedly, and the masses will believe it to be the truth. Nazi Germany applied it in its drive to exterminate the Jews and “rid Europe of inferior nations”, while deceiving the wider world as to the true situation on the ground. But that did not go far before Germany suffered a devastating collapse, and the future generation learnt to say, “never again”.

If some of the Igbo leaders of today continue to rely on such strategy, then we could expect a similar backlash, because this form of dirty politics breeds violent conflict and destruction.

8 The vicious campaign failed to bring down President Buhari’s Government, and did not also succeed in intimidating and blackmailing the President to do their dictate. Their game plan did not work out. Contradictions set in, and in a twist, the mad dog trained to attack the enemy, turned against its master breeder, and we are all caught up in a fix, confused about the way out.

Some prominent spokesmen would attack the person of the President:  that he has been romancing Boko Haram and bandits in the North, releasing them and granting them amnesty, while refusing to release a freedom fighter (Nnamdi Kanu) who has not committed any offence, and that Nigeria will know no peace if he is not released.

At the same time, another top leader of the same group would say they are appealing or pleading with the President to release the detainee in order to douse tension in the SouthEast, because it’s all about equity and fairness, and that is the only way for Nigeria to move forward; that the President is the father of the nation and should forgive the detainee as his son. This is not how to seek for “political solution” if they think that’s what they are doing.

They are still dishing out insults and threats.

QUESTIONS:

  1. What plan has the Igbo leaders laid out to get the armed gangs to renounce violence, surrender their weapons and be rehabilitated in a kind of amnesty program?

Or are they thinking that the Federal Government should keep quiet and watch armed gangs of non-state actors take over the space and dictate what happens, by using threats and wanton violence? No responsible national government anywhere in the world will tolerate that.

Threats, blackmail and insults cannot work here. Nor will simpletonic cunning and fox game work. We must take responsibility, with forthright approach in seeking solution to the problem, then we could be sure of cooperation and support from the Fed Govt, particularly in the area of funding.

  1. Those talking of “unconditional release’ of Nnamdi Kanu, from the ongoing terrorism-related court trial, are simply jesting, dancing to cheap gallery, entertaining and deceiving themselves and the local folks. It shows crass insensitivity and total disregard to serious national-security concern, as well as insulting the sensibilities of other groups of Nigerian stakeholders. We better wisen up and think better.
  1. Recall that this group of pro-Biafran agitators were attacking and destroying Federal Government facilities in the SouthEast, attacking and killing duty police men and women and their stations burnt, as well as attacking members of other Federal Government security agencies, and killing Igbo leaders and peasants who disagreed with their method.

How many of these elders, publicly spoke out against that?  It was as if some of them were celebrating the feat and blaming the Federal Government for creating the situation. That was before the leader of the group was re-arrested outside the country and brought home to face court trial. Has the group denounced such violence?

  1. Now that the monster we created has turned back to attack us, we must take responsibility, with a spirit of forthrightness and atonement in seeking for solution to the problem.

Empty grandstanding, cunning and fox game, can only drag and worsen the situation.

President Buhari will soon complete his tenure of office and another President (most likely from the SouthWest) will take over, and we could again start attacking him with insults, abuses and hate propaganda, which will lead us nowhere and  cannot succeed in intimidating the new person to do our biddings”.

Nigeria’s Problem Is Within Us – Bishop Okorafor

0
Geoffrey Enyinnaya Okorafor

By George Best Okoroh

Those condemning brain drain and the spate at which Nigerians jet out for greener pastures should have a rethink, pause and help to advocate  a system that will promote meritocracy and not mediocrity.

This has become necessary as the Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Egbu, Rt. Rev. Geoffrey Enyinnaya Okorafor brought to the fore the nagging human errors responsible for such exodus of human brains.

Bishop Okorafor  who juxtaposed the performances of diaspora Nigerians to their counterparts within the shores of the country in his Presidential Address to the Third Session of the Ninth Synod of the Diocese, held at Christ Anglican Church, Emeabiam, Owerri West LGA, Imo State, painted a picture of same seeds on different soils—the good and the bad. Delivering the charge on the the theme “Honour To A Father And A Master But Denying God Honour And Reverence ( Malachi 1:6 ) An Error”, Bishop Okorafor posited that man-made circumstances in Nigeria were setting the nation and its people back.

“Nigerians abroad doing great and making exploits in every aspect of human endeavours be it Science, Technology,  Medical Science, Arts and Literature, Entrepreneurship etc have brought fame and respect for Nigeria because they live outside the shores of Nigeria. If they were  here, circumstances beyond them would have brought them down, stressing that ” these circumstances are within us and are responsible for our setback”.

The Anglican Prelate lamented the spate of  tribalism, ethno-religious factors, political deceit, corruption at all levels of our national life, unpatriotic nationals both leaders and the led, inconsistency in the country’s  national policies, lopsidedness in the share of the nation’s commonwealth, appointments, mediocrity as against meritocracy as the bane of Nigeria’s woes, and underscored that Nigeria as never before has witnessed the highest level of ethnicity and tribalism under the present administration in the country. He furthe noted that assessment of appointments under President Muhammadu Buhari’s watch were indicative of a high level of lopsidedness along ethnic and religious divide, and challenged “Fellow Nigerians, as you go to the polls in 2023, shine your eyes and vote wisely. May God help Nigeria and Nigerians”.

To the Independent National Electoral Commission ( INEC )Bishop Okorafor urged the body to prove itself an independent commission indeed by not being bias in the conduct and declaration of results in the forthcoming elections.

The Bishop  frowned at the selective dispensation of justice in the country; and stressed that the Judiciary, an arm of any democratic government is expected to be the last hope of the common man and advocated allowing the Judiciary  to have its budget, control its budget and take decisions that concern it where necessary without interference from the Executive arm. “We live in a society where he who pays the piper dictates the tune and expressed worry that until  the Judiciary is free from the shackles of being controlled by the Executive arm of government, it will continue to be in bondage”.

While maintaining that the Judiciary appeared  being muzzled up in the country cited cases involving the former boss of Economic and Financial Crime Commission ( EFCC ) Ibrahim Magu ( alleged to be involved in money londering ), the former  Finance Minister, Mrs. Kemi Adeosu ( said to be indicted for forgery ) and more recently the former Accountant General of the Federation ,Ahmed Idris( accused of embezzlement of over a hundred and fifty billion naira) to buttress the need for the full autonomy of the judiciary while also revealing the unserious nature of the present administration’s commitment to the fight against corruption.

The Anglican Prelate urged that focus should be on what is right and not who is right in taking decisions affecting the generality of the citizens,  cautioning Nigerian politicians to shun absolute loyalty  to the party. “Our interest  should focus on the Nigerian nation and its development not on our different political parties. These parties will fizzle out one day. The country remains”, he warned.

Senator Bulkachuwa, Dumps APC For PDP; Says He Will Overwhelmingly Support Atiku

Senator Adamu Bulkachuwa

By Gideon Njoku

From Bauchi State and the hallowed Chambers of the Senate came a strong endorsement for the Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Atiku Abubakar.

One of the most respected Senators, Adamu Bulkachuwa, has dumped the All Progressive Congress. APC, for the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Bulkachuwa, 82, the Senator  representing Bauchi North Senatorial District, confirmed his defection when he raised his PDP membership card and declared that he would “overwhelmingly support”  the victory of Atiku in the 2023 Presidential election.

The defection to PDP and endorsement of Atiku couldn’t have come at a better time for the Presidential candidate than now when Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, PDP, is threatening not to work for Atiku over his alleged marginalization by Atiku. He said Atiku doesn’t want him because he dared contest against him during the PDP Primary which Atiku won.

Already the five Governors of the PDP, led by the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, who are at loggerheads with the PDP leadership and Atiku, have visited Bala in a bid to lure him to their side.

Receiving them, the Governor declared he was one of them, and was delighted to see them. Those who visited with Wike include Governors Samuel Ortom, Benue, Okezie Ikpeazu, Abia and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, Enugu.

Bala: “Today I am very, very happy  to receive my brothers, the Governors of the G-5. They call themselves the integrity Group. I an supposed to be with them, but they excommunicated me for some reasons best known to them. Bur I am highly connected with them.”

Senator Bulkachuwa is the Senate Committee Chairman, Foreign Affairs, and husband to the immediate past President of the Court of Appeal.

Dino Lied About Attack On Atiku’s Convoy – Police

0

By Gideon Njoku

The Borno State Police Command has dubbed the Spokesperson of the Peoples Democratic Party’s Presidential Campaign Council, Senator Dino Melaye, a liar.

Reports had broken out on Wednesday that the convoy of the PDP Presidential Candidate, Atiku Abubakar, came under heavy attack in Maiduguri, capital of Borno State. According to the reports, thugs had swooped on Atiku’s convoy on his way to the Campaign venue after he and his entourage paid a courtesy call on the Shehu of Borno in his Palace. A number of people, it was said, were injured.

The report grew wings when Melaye confirmed it, and disclosed that 74 supporters of Atiku have been hospitalised while over 10 vehicles on the convoy were destroyed.

Dino said all kinds of dangerous weapons were used to attack the convoy all in a bid to stop the PDP Presidential rally in the State. He said nothing ever could stop the rally and put the blame on the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, in the State. Dino  claimed the alleged thugs  were over 100 in number.

But the Borno State Police Command has put a lie to Melaye’s story. The Command said nothing could be further from the truth as there was no such attack on Atiku’s motorcade.

Addressing the Press on Wednesday, the Police Command’s Spokesperson,  ASP Sani Shatanbaya, said the story of the attack was false. He said that Atiku had a free rally in Maiduguri without any such incident.

He said that the Commissioner of Police in the State, accompanied Atiku to the Emir’s palace, and was present at the Campaign venue to see to a trouble-free event.

He said: “The news of the attack on Atiku Abubakar’s convoy was not only fake but a false and mischievous attempt at confusing Nigerians.

“There was no attack on Atiku’s convoy.”

But the Police later paraded one Musa Abbas, 32, who the Command accused of “attempting to disrupt the escort of the Presidential candidate on the way to the Airport. He was arrested with a stone, and on sighting the Police, he ran into a Church where he was arrested. The Police is hunting for his accomplices.”

The Borno State Chairman of the APC, Ali Dalori, said he was disappointed in Dino Melaye as there was no such attack on Atiku’s convoy in the State.

Alkali Baba Usman - IGP

  1. As the battle against insurgency is being taken to the doorstep of bandits, the Inspector-General of Police, (IGP), Usman Alkali Baba has announced acquisition of three high-powered Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs).

According to force spokesman, Olumiyiwa Adejobi, the facilities “are for improved armed surveillance operations to checkmate criminal activities in the country as a further manifestation of the IGP’s determination to integrate the use of innovative technology in the law enforcement duties of the Nigeria Police Force.”

In a statement on Wednesday, Adejobi stated that “The newly acquired drones will surely assist the Police in monitoring active crime scenes, coordinating response operations, and providing armed aerial support to officers on reconnaissance operations.

“The three newly acquired UAVs are rotary wing aircrafts capable of flying up to an altitude of 1000ft with high operational endurance and capacity of firing at acquired threats and targets from reasonable distances.

“The Nigeria Police Air wing has equally concluded trainings for the operators of the drones in partnership with foreign experts who have been consulted for trainings and maintenance of the drones.
