The Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization, His Excellency Kitack Lim, is scheduled to visit the Federal Republic of Nigeria from November 20th – 22nd 2022.

During his visit, the IMO scribe will attend the Nigeria International Maritime Summit 2022 where regional policies and operational perspectives on Decarbonization and Green House Gas Emissions in shipping will be the focus. The Federal Ministry of Transportation and its Agencies in collaboration with the organized maritime private sector under the auspices of Nigeria International Maritime Summit is hosting the event.

The Minister of Transportation Engineer Mu’azu Sambo says the Federal Government is committed to ensuring Nigeria becomes a major destination for global maritime players.

On his part, the Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, Dr. Bashir Jamoh OFR, said the visit by Kitack Lim, which is the first by an IMO Secretary-General to Nigeria in over fifteen years, is a testament to the renewed confidence of the international maritime community in Nigeria.

The CEO of NIMS, Dr. Emeka Akabogu, noted that the summit will provide a platform for practical issues in operations; and regulations impacting Decarbonization in Shipping in the West and Central Africa region would be highlighted as a catalyst for igniting the Blue economy in the said region.

OPINION: In Love, As in Football, Size Does Not Matter. Here’s Why

Azu Ishiekwene

By Azu Ishiekwene

It’s a great time to be a football lover. It might not feel exactly so if your country is not one of the 32 taking part in the 22nd edition of the World Cup in Doha, Qatar. But being a fan means managing to love the game without having your dog in the fight.

For example, Nigeria’s national team, the Super Eagles, won’t be in Qatar – the second time in eight years. But since the team crashed out to Ghana in February, fans have managed to reconcile with their misery, especially with forthcoming elections which essentially foist a choice between Tweedledee and Tweedledum.

One month of jousting over which striker should have played in what position and who should have been benched is more useful for fans than listening to politicians promising heaven on earth without the remotest idea of how they plan to make it happen.

With national pride at stake for some, big money and career for a few, a chance to stake a political claim for others, and yet others with nothing but the ephemeral joy of the moment to lose, Doha is the world’s most valuable, and for the price of $220 billion, perhaps the most expensive one-month distraction.

At times like these, for Africans, either at home or in the Diaspora, the trend is to gravitate their passion and support to the participating countries representing the continent. Senegal, Ghana, Morocco, Tunisia and Cameroon would carry the continent’s flag, after favourites, Egypt and Nigeria had failed to qualify.

In the history of the competition, only three African countries have made it to the quarter finals stage: Cameroon (Italia ’90), Senegal (Korea/Japan 2002), and Ghana (South Africa 2010), and only South Africa has been able to muster the resources to host the World Cup.

No surprises, here though. Hosting the tournament has never been for the fainthearted. The 29-day tournament is costing the Kingdom of Qatar about 15 times the amount of Nigeria’s proposed 2023 budget and more than six times the proposed expenditure of N20.51 trillion.

Only deep pocket economies like Qatar and others like it can fund the huge infrastructural developments and building of eight stadiums. One of them, the 60,000 capacity Al Bayt Stadium, is modelled on the traditional Arabian tent with a retractable roof.

With the third highest human development index in the Arab world and the third highest gas reserves in the world, this tiny country of less than three million people is proving that some great things can be achieved not by size.

And to think that its size is one the reasons former FIFA president Sepp Blatter feels Qatar doesn’t qualify as a World Cup host.

But even if physical size is at issue, fiscal ability is the name of the game. And the young Arab sitting over this treasure trove has got more than enough cash to splash, host and entertain the rest of the world, represented by 32 national teams, many times over.

Born in 1980, Qatari king, Sheikh Tamim ibn Hamad Al Thani, has built a reputation of attracting high profile global sporting events to the Arabian Peninsula state even before he ascended the throne in 2013, as part of his strategies to raise Qatar’s international profile.

He also chaired the 2006 organising committee of the Asian Games.

Due partly to his contributions, Qatar had also hosted the Asian Handball Championships in 2004, Asian Basketball Championships in 2005, and the UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale) World Cycling Championships in 2016. A bid to host the 2020 Summer Olympics had failed as Doha lost out to Tokyo, Japan.

Coming after the world cup, are the 2024 Aquatic Championship in Doha and the Asian Games in 2030, also in Doha.

The sheikhs are not only interested in developing a vibrant sports economy, their investments are spreading into the major football leagues of Europe as Qatar Sports Investments’ Nasser Al-Khelaifi owns Paris Saint Germain (PSG) – leading French club side and one of the richest clubs in football – with a net worth of $3.2billion, according to Forbes’ Soccer Team Valuations List.

They reportedly own substantial shares in Portuguese and Belgian club sides as well. They also have substantial investments in what is arguably the world’s deadliest club side, Manchester City, and the latest sensation of the Premier League, New Castle.

Qatar 2022 is the first time the senior World Cup will be held in the Middle East since its inception. The Qatari Kingdom had to face up to giant neighbours Saudi Arabi, alongside UAE, Egypt and Bahrain imposing an economic blockade that cost the tiny Gulf nation $43billion in losses, according to Al-Jazeera.

In June 2017, the four states cut all diplomatic and trade ties with Qatar, accusing it of supporting “terrorism” and destabilising the region – allegations Doha denied. Qatar ramped up local production and established diplomatic relations with Iran to not only overcome the challenges of the siege, but manage declining oil revenues.

In January 2021, Saudi Foreign Ministry announced that Egypt, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates had resumed ties with Doha, during the 41st Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) summit, a reconciliation mediated by Kuwait.

Blatter says Qatar 2022 was a “mistake”. Qatar was graded as having “high operational risk”, and generated much criticism as being part of the FIFA corruption scandals. Blatter’s “confessions” indicate that there was pressure from the French government under Nicholas Sarkozy and the connivance of former UEFA president, Michel Platini, to award hosting rights to Qatar.

But the travails the world has gone through in the past few years are indicative that the choice of Qatar was probably right. Most rich Arab Gulf nations have been significantly insulated from the global economic shocks and the ravages of COVID-19.

The global economic depression and the COVID-19 pandemic had left even the financial powerhouses of Europe gasping for air, with the Russian-Ukraine war delivering yet another power punch on the world’s cereals and grains powerhouse.

Rising food and energy costs which have caused domestic unrest in many countries would have made the high costs of hosting the World Cup at this time a very difficult task for the United States, which, according to the former FIFA boss, should have been the host of the 2022 tournament, after Russia hosted the 2018 edition.

Football pundits and insiders have always alleged insider manipulations and boardroom politics in the running of the international football federation, and it appears Blatter is bent on confirming it.

These considerations may well be behind the reasons Africa, with 54 member states in FIFA, gets only five qualification slots for the World Cup.

Yet, going by Blatter’s words, Europe which is comparatively smaller than Asia, Africa, north and south America has 13 slots for Qatar 2022.

Blatter may be talking about hosting rights and not participation in the world cup, but the goose and gander deserve a fair shot at one of the world’s most popular sports.

It doesn’t make sense that Europe with 55 members in FIFA, gets 13 slots, more than double that of Africa, which has only one number less in FIFA’s membership.

As the games begin on Sunday, about 200,000 fans will be travelling to match venues in Qatar, while an estimated five billion fans would be watching around the world, including fans in Russia and Ukraine separated by a totally needless war.

Football is a tribal game. Though money and politics have often competed to spoil and corrupt it, just as they have sometimes proved indispensable in its improvement, when all is said and done, the kindred spirit of the true fans prevails.

And that is the promise of Qatar.

Walk Your Talk, Obi-Datti Charges Buhari, INEC On Credible Polls

0
Peter Obi

It was refreshing and encouraging for the growth of democracy in our country hearing President Muhammadu Buhari and the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof Mahmoud Yakubu giving assurances of free, fair and credible elections in 2023.

President Buhari on a courtesy call at the palace of the Gbong Gwom Jos, Da Jacob Gyang Buba on Tuesday  said, “No election winner will be denied his mandate, irrespective of the party to which they belonged.”

In an open letter to Nigerians to mark 100 days to the Presidential election on February 25 2023, INEC boss, Prof Yakubu said on Thursday, “Once again, another General Election is upon us, the 7th since the restoration of democracy in Nigeria in 1999. Over the last 23 years, we have made a steady progress in the twin areas of electoral reform and election administration.

“Although a lot of work still lies ahead, it is generally acknowledged that our elections are getting better and citizens’ confidence in the process is increasing.

“As I have said repeatedly, the Commission’s allegiance is to Nigeria. Our loyalty is to Nigerians who want free, fair, credible and verifiable elections supported by technology, which guarantees transparent accreditation and upload of polling unit results for citizens to view in real-time on election day.

“It is for these reasons that the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV) were introduced. There is no going back on the deployment of BVAS and IReV for the 2023 General Election.

The Obi-Datti Media Office notes these assurances coming from the two most critical characters whose sincere guarantees and commitment will ensure for free, fair and credible  elections in 2023

Free and fair election in 2023 remains the only path for the growth of democracy in our clime and for the political stability that is needed for development.

Obi-Datti Media Office in acknowledging this laudable and refreshing verbal commitment urges them to put their words into action by showing in their deeds and actions that they mean what they say by actively doing it.

In order words, the Obidient Movement is saying loudly that the President and the INEC should put into practice what they are preaching as it’s the only way to take Nigeria out of the woods.

In 2019 about 28.6m Nigerians voted in the Presidential election out of 82.3m registered voters which is not good enough and part of the seeming voter apathy is due to lack of transparency that puts voters off.

It’s also due to logistics challenges arising from personnel incompetence, corruption and abuse of privileges and power by some stakeholders that includes security operatives.

In view of the fresh assurances from these key stakeholders, the Obi-Datti political family wishes to encourage and urge them to perform actions consistent with their claims and pronouncements.

We need to remind the Electoral body also that it’s their basic responsibility to ensure that what is needed before and in an Election Day is to make adequate arrangements without excuses.

It’s gratifying to hear the INEC Chairman say repeatedly that the Commission’s allegiance is to Nigeria. “Our loyalty is to Nigerians who want free, fair, credible and verifiable elections supported by technology, which guarantees transparent accreditation and upload of polling unit results for citizens to view in”

We, therefore, finally urge the President and the INEC boss to walk their talk as it’s the best thing to do for our democracy to endure.

“I know you as a person, you have all the criteria, you have all the characteristics to lead this country, you have it. Nobody can deny that.”

He added that if Obi hadn’t left the PDP for LP, he would have been able to have realized his ambition to save Nigeria.

Obi on his part disclosed that the problem the nation is having is that it is not productive.

The former Anambra State Governor said he knows the root of the problem the nation is facing having surveyed the country.

He said he has the midas touch that will change the fortune of the country and how each Region would benefit from this.

The 2019 Vice Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, assured the electorate of his commitment for a better Nigeria.

Obi said, “I know the problem of the country. Nigeria is not a productive State.

“I have said it again and again that I know what to do to benefit every part of the country. I told them in the North when we held our campaign that we will develop their vast lands. They have the lands so we will develop it.

“The South-West will be our financial hub and the East will be our manufacturing base. We will revive the sea port in Rivers so that we can be exporting from there.”

Accompanied by his Vice Presidential Candidate, Datti Baba-Ahmed, the LP Presidential Flagbearer urged the people of Rivers to take him as one of them, pledging support for the people of the state.

Car Thief at UNICAL

But for the prompt intervention of security personnel, a yet-to-be-identified young man would have been lynched Thursday by an angry mob after he was caught allegedly trying to steal an SUV at the University of Calabar.

The suspect had successfully entered the vehicle and was trying to drive it off using the Vice Chancellor’s way in instead of the normal way out.

However, luck ran out of him as the gate was shut against him.

Stuck, he drove around the campus of the University trying to escape but was chased down by an angry mob and security personnel.

The suspect later claimed the car belongs to his mother.

By Ayodele Oni

Ondo State Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, has commended his Osun State counterpart for standing tall against all odds, including socioeconomic realities, in the running of the affairs of the State.

Akeredolu noted that Oyetola has done excellently well, saying nobody can beat his sterling record as far as trajectory of good governance is concerned in the history of the State.

Ondo State Governor also renewed his affirm faith in God for Oyetola to reclaim his mandate in no distant time.

This is equally as Governor Oyetola reaffirmed his strong belief in God to reclaim his mandate, saying, “It is covenant from God that will come to pass.”

Akeredolu spoke on Wednesday, during a courtesy visit to the Governor Oyetola shortly before the inauguration of the iconic Olaiya Flyover in Osogbo.

Governor Oyetola had invited his Ondo State counterpart for the inauguration.

Akeredolu said: “I feel so convenient, I can see love when we all sit down as southwest Governors to discuss our development.

“It is a great honour to be asked to come here to inaugurate the flyover. I really take it as an honour. Thank you for giving me this honour. Immediately I got the invitation, I assured I would be here. You have done greatly in this State.

“I mean greatly for that matter, and I wonder why a number of things happened, very strange things. You served, you sacrificed, and this will still happen. I know we are sometimes dealing with people that are not predictable.

“All the roads, hospitals and lots more. I want to appreciate you, you have proved that with limited resources, you still cared for your people. For those close to this State, you have done wonderfully well. I can beat my chest on that.

“Nobody can beat your record. As we are struggling to get this mandate back, know that the record you have gotten, nobody can beat it.

“We know the number of roads you have done, Primary Healthcare Centres, security, you have done all, they are uncountable. Well, Just congratulate yourself, you have done well.

“You have not only done well here, you are a reliable ally in our midst as Governors. You are quiet and when you take your decision, rely on Gboyega, he is very supportive.

“Osun State cannot forget you forever.  By the grace of God, we will come back. God knows how he works. By the grace of God, we will come back to govern this State for a second term.

“I appreciate your invite once again. Calling me to come here is not an entitlement, there are many that can do it, I see it as a great honour.”

In his short remarks, Governor Oyetola appreciated Governor Akeredolu for accepting the request to inaugurate the symbolic flyover in the State.

Oyetola who attributed the success of the project to the innovative approach to governance adopted by his administration, said despite the current socio-economic realities, his government was not deterred in providing the best for the people of the state in terms of infrastructure development.

Governor Oyetola noted that he has no regret coming to serve the State, adding that his mandate to serve for second term in office will be reclaimed as nothing promised by God goes unfulfilled.

“Let me welcome my brother in whom I am well pleased, to Osun.  I feel highly honoured to see my brother coming here today. We feel highly honoured coming here. He is our Commander and he has been able to pilot the affairs successfully.

“I am particularly happy you came here. What is important is to serve. Whether you like it or not, you have been bestowed to serve. We are not restricted by the meagre resources at our disposal but we decided to apply Alternative Project Funding Approach.

“I have no regret coming to serve. We see how we can bring innovation to the system, we have been creative enough, because we are coming from the private sector; it assisted us.

“People doubted when we said we wanted to construct the flyover, which was completed within 12 months, but I can see that the doubting Thomases were the first to ply the road and the flyover.

“I have invited immediate past Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, to inaugurate a number of roads too, as part of efforts to celebrate our colleagues. Every southwest Governor has done very well.

“I have every hope that I will reclaim my mandate, it is a covenant from Almighty God and it will come to pass.”

Ondo Gets FG Nod For Deep Sea Port

By Ayodele Oni

Ondo State Government continues to intensify effort to ensure the take off of a deep sea port in the coastal area of the state.

The proposed deep sea port, according to government will serve as an alternative to Lagos port and boost the economy of the state.

It is also expected to expose to the outside world the large deposit of bitumen, which ranks the state as the third largest in the world.

Investors from within and outside the country have shown interest in the bitumen deposit, but could not go further due to absence of a nearby port needed for the exportation of the mineral deposit.

The state deputy Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, acting as Governor now, led the state executive council members to the office of the vice president, Prof Yemi Osinbajo to further make case for the deep sea port.

The visit seems to have yeilded positive result as the Vice President declared that, the Federal Government would support Ondo State Government to ensure the port becomes a reality.

Aiyedatiwa was accompanied on the visit by the Chairman/CEO, Nigeria in Diaspora Commission ( NIDCOM ), Dr Abike Dabiri-Erewa.

Osinbajo commended Ondo State Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu SAN, for his vision on the Deep Seaport, believed to be the needed turning point for economic boost in the State.

Aiyedatiwa thanked the Vice President for the audience and federal Government’s commitment to the actualization of the seaport, promising that Governor Akeredolu’s administration would not relent in its efforts for a new and prosperous Ondo State.

Ghanaian Authority Disowns Security Advisory Urging Citizens To Stay Away From Abuja

Nana Akufo-Addo

By Ayodele Oni

A security advisory purportedly issued by Ghanian authority warning its citizens to stay away from Nigeria’s federal capital, Abuja may be fake after all.

The security advisory, with name and logo of Ghanaian ministry of foreign affairs, was issued on Wednesday, warning citizens from travelling to Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

It stated that the warning became imperative as Nigeria had asked some hotels to close, citing “the directive by local authorities to hotels operating in residential buildings to shut down.”

It also said there was a “high danger of terrorism, criminality, inter-communal conflict, armed attacks, and kidnappings.”

In a rejoinder tweeted on Thursday morning, the government declared that the statement was unauthorized, regretting the inconvenience it may have caused.

The rejoinder read, “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration wishes to refer to the travel advisory published this evening, Wednesday, November 16, 2022, advising against non-essential travel to Abuja and wishes to state that the statement was unauthorized.

“The Ministry is not aware of any threat targeted at Ghanaians who continue to live in harmony with their Nigerian brothers and sisters.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration regrets any inconvenience this may have caused to the travelling public.”

There had been similar warnings earlier issued by the United Kingdom and United States, citing possible escalation in cases of banditry and kidnapping.

The federal government, through some of its agencies however assured residents at the federal capital and any part of the country of adequate protection.

Breaking: Obi Challenges Tinubu To Name His Classmates, Says Odili Was His Football Captain

0

Peter Obi has taken a swipe at Bola Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, saying the former Lagos Governor has failed to name his school mates.

The comment is the latest in the efforts of the 2023 presidential candidates to outwith themselves ahead the critical election.

Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, disclosed this in Port Harcourt on Thursday while commsioning a flyover in the state.

The LP candidate is said to be among the front runners in the 2023 presidential election.
The former Anambra state governor spoke few days after an Abuja based lawyer Mike Enahoro-Ebah, sued Tinubu, for perjuring in the documents he submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

The lawyer had filed a suit at a magistrate court in Abuja, claiming that there are discrepancies in the documents the APC presidential hopeful submitted to the Electoral umpire, that he attended Government College, Lagos and Chicago University, the United States of America, USA.
The former Lagos governor had once said that he attended Government College, Ibadan but the alumni of the school has denied knowing him.

In what was intended to attack Tinubu on Thursday, Obi said he attended the same school with a former govrnor of Rivers state, Sir Peter Odili. Going back in time, the LP candidate said Odili was his football team captain while they were in secondary school.

Unfortunately he said, “some people cannot name their secondary school mates” and they want to lead the country.

Obi said whoever wants to be president and Commander-in-Chief must have integrity.

Recall that Tinubu had promised to send Obi back to his state by wining the election next year during a campaign rally in Plateau state. He said the LP candidate does not know his way back home.
