The National Center for Disease Control, NCDC, has warned  Nigerians  that there may be possible increase in COVID-19  infection as the Yuletide season draws closer.

NCDC Director General, Ifedayo Adetifa,  forecasted that Nigeria will likely see an increase in COVID-19 cases and a decrease in hospitalisation over the holiday season this year. He stressing that the increase in travel over the holiday season might result in a rise in cases.

In an interview with Punch Newspaper, Adeifa said that though it is prepared for the unexpected, Nigerians should take precautionary measures to avert a surge in the cases.

“We are prepared to see that there may be a bump in cases just because of the increase in travel and the number of people returning. What we may not expect to see is an increasing number of people who are sick.”

He added that vaccination and previous COVID-19 infections provided some degrees of immunity.

“The population has quite a bit of immunity due to vaccination, previous COVID-19 infection, or repeated COVID-19 infection. So. COVID-19 is not new. The Omicron is not new like it was in November (2021).

“If you look at our numbers, we haven’t lost people for a while. Even if every single death is a great disaster for people’s families or friends, it’s not anything like the Delta variant when we had a big problem,” he added.

Adeifa added that the Omicron variant was the dominant strain in the country, in November and December last year, and  has refused to abate.

He said other minor variants have emerged, but Omicron remains the most dominant.

Ademola Adeleke sworn in as Governor of Osun State

By Akinwale Kasali

The Inauguration Ceremony of Governor Ademola Adeleke as the Governor of Osun State which saw loyalists of Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola gracing the occasion has generated reactions from different quarters,  especially from the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Allies of Aregbesola who obviously worked against the re-election of former Governor, Gboyega Oyetola and didn’t hide their displeasure  with his administration’s policies graced the  inauguration.

The factional Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the State,  Rasaq Salinsile, whose group was backed by Aregbesola, during the struggle for the Osun State leadership of the party was present at the  inauguration  which didn’t augur well with the APC.  It  sparked reactions among members of the opposition party.

Members of The Osun Progressives, TOP, were also present, including former Commissioner for Sports, Biyi Odunlade.

TOP, a faction in the Osun APC, displayed pictures taken at the event on various social media pages  Monday 28th November, 2022.

Aregbesola’s allies who attended the event have been labeled ‘Enemies of the APC, Betrayers. Saboteurs of Progressives’ and other names.

TOP members have however said they are proud of what they did because it was the best thing to do.

Reacting to this development, Sunday Akere, aide to former Governor Oyetola, expressed disappointed about the action of the APC members that attended the event.

He added that, “It is unfortunate that we find ourselves in this situation. It is good that the enemies within are exposing themselves gradually. Initially, the argument of these people is that  they want to reorganise the party.

“Even at the election, they refused to admit that they worked for the PDP, telling the whole world they didn’t do it. We know who the TOP leaders went there to represent. We are not surprised. But I want to assure you the party would adequately take care of the situation and respond to it this week.”

Odunlade in a chat with The Punch said that he attended the inauguration of Adeleke because he is a senior citizen of the state and former member of the State Executive Council and not as a TOP member.

“I didn’t hide. I attended that programme as a citizen of Osun State. I also identified with the new change based on the fact that once a governor has been elected, he becomes governor for everybody. I didn’t attend as a TOP member.

“I attended as a former Commissioner who was invited to attend the inauguration ceremony. I didn’t hide. If you look at the pictures, I took them with former cabinet members, we were together in Aregbesola’s cabinet. They are Dr. Wale Bolorunduro and Prof. Bukola Oyawoye,” Odunlade said.

Ladi Baderinwa, Secretary of the APC faction in Osun State supported by Aregbesola was asked if it would punish members of the APC that attended Adeleke’s inauguration as it is termed to be an anti party activity, he responded by saying that, “At our meeting, if the matter comes up for discussion, then decision would be taken. I also saw some pictures.”

Muazu Sambo - Minister of Transporataion

By Akinwale Kasali

Following the imminent resumption of Rail Transportation from Abuja-Kaduna, the Federal Government has informed Nigerians to be prepared for hike in transportation fare on the route.

Minister of Transportation, Muazu Sambo said there would be an increase in the rail service fare as a result of the economic situation in the country.

Sambo said the number of trips per day will also be reduced, adding that there will be night traveling.

He made this disclosure while fielding answers to questions asked by journalists on Sunday in Kaduna while inspecting the train station.

He said: “The number of trips will be reduced. Naturally, you should expect that a certain number of passengers will not be comfortable boarding the train for obvious reasons.”

Speaking further, the Minister stated that the number of trips per day would increase as the travelling population increased.

“We are human beings, we are bound to feel a little bit uncomfortable until we can see that every security measure has been put in place. So, we will reduce the number of trips and as the travelling population picks up, we will increase the number of trips but we will certainly not travel at night for now.

“Please, expect an increase in fares. I am having final consultation with the management of the Nigerian Railway Corporation and the management of the ministry to see whether it will be immediate or we will take a little time.

“We all know that prices of things have gone up, even airfares have gone up and we have not heard anybody cry about it. Why is it that it’s only when it is train fares that people are reactive? I can assure you that the poor masses will be taken care of and considered because we are a very sensitive government.”

Despite the filing of a stay of execution and notice of appeal  against the sack of hurriedly elected Local Government Chairmen and Councilors Governor Ademola Adeleke has directed career officers to oversee the affairs of the Local Governments.

A Federal High Court sitting in Osogbo had, last week, nullified the Local council poll conducted by Osun State Local Government Election Electoral Commission (OSSIEC) set up by the immediate past Government of Gboyega Oyetola.

The election, which was conducted by the state electoral body (OSIEC) on the 15th October, 2022 was declared null and void by Justice Ayo-Nathani Emmanuel of the Federal High Court, Osogbo for not  being in consonance with Electoral Act of 2022.

The Court ordered the winners of the voided exercise to vacate offices with immediate effect.

A statement on Monday signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Olawale Rasheed, stated that “The Executive Governor of Osun State, Senator Ademola Adeleke directed the most senior Career Heads across all the Local Government Council Areas to take charge with immediate effect.

“Career Heads of LGAs should take immediate charge of the Area Office, (LCDAs) and ACDAs in Osun  with immediate effect.

“This is in compliance with the judgement of the Federal High Court sitting in Osogbo that sacked the purportedly elected Local Government Chairmen and Councilors.”

Jim Ovia Extolled By Stakeholders As Zenith Bank Names Iconic UNILAG Alumni Building After Prof Ibidapo-Obe

Zenith-Unilag Alumni Building

The memory of Professor Oyewusi Ibidapo-Obe, a former Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos, came alive as Zenith Bank Plc has named the iconic building housing its UNILAG Branch and the University of Lagos, UNILAG Alumni in his honour.

In his opening remarks at the commissioning ceremony, the Group Managing Director/CEO of Zenith Bank Plc and Chairman of the Body of Banks’ CEOs in Nigeria,  Ebenezer Onyeagwu, lauded the Founder and Chairman of the bank, Jim Ovia, CFR, for being physically present at the commissioning of the building to honour the memory of his late friend, Prof. Oyewusi Ibidapo-Obe, who served on the board of Zenith Bank as a Non-Executive Director, and for his passion for youth education and digital learning.

He noted the remarkable and continued commitment of Jim Ovia, CFR, to education and youth development in Nigeria, especially through the setting up of James Hope College, a co-educational institution which offers a combination of British and Nigerian curricula, and the James Hope University, which is billed to commence academic activities next year. He also extolled his philanthropy through the setting up of the Jim Ovia Foundation and Mankind United in Total Support for Education Initiative, which has awarded scholarships and produced over 1500 graduates from among indigent people who would not have had the benefit of having a university education.

Onyeagwu also recalled how the bank’s partnership with the University of Lagos began in 2001 with the donation of the first ICT centre, when the Founder and Chairman was the Group Managing Director/ CEO of the bank. According to him, “Today, Zenith Bank has built not less than 15 ICT centres in various tertiary institutions and cities all over the country. And I just want to say that no single institution or individual has been able to accomplish what we have done in that respect. And this is a demonstration of the passion our Founder and Chairman has, not just for education, but also for digital learning and computer literacy.

This is in addition to several other support to the university, including the institution of Academic Excellence Awards in 2001, where the best graduating students from selected departments – Banking & Finance, Business Administration, Economics and Accounting, receive awards with financial rewards (currently NGN500,000) and employment opportunity, and the donation of 3,500 tablets to enable indigent students of the university to learn online effectively in 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic”. Onyeagwu noted that the building is a strong statement of Zenith Bank’s sustainability initiatives as a signatory to several global sustainability frameworks including the United Nations Principles for Responsible Banking, as it incorporates many of the elements that make a facility environmentally friendly and sustainable.

Speaking at the commissioning of the iconic building, the Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Udom Emmanuel noted the huge contributions of Zenith Bank and, in particular, Jim Ovia, CFR, a man he described as a father, to the development of Nigeria. In his words,” when you see things being done consistently in the right way, there is always a man pointing in that direction. A lot of people ask me how come you are doing so much in public service; I say I come from a background where my mentor told me that you don’t report efforts, you don’t give excuses, but you report results.

So no matter the situation, even in the midst of an economic recession, in the midst of Covid, you should not stop development and performance. As far as you are from the Zenith family, you are expected to have that creativity and ideas that can make you produce results. In Zenith, we say only the paranoid survive. So I really want to appreciate what I am seeing here today”. Whilst thanking the alumni association and the school authority for their collaborative efforts towards achieving capacity development, which he described as the bane of Nigerian society, he expressed his delight and honour to commission a building named after the revered Late Prof. Oyewusi Ibidapo-Obe, who touched and impacted so many people while he was alive.

In his address, the National President of Unilag Alumni Association, Dr. John Momoh, thanked the Founder and Chairman of Zenith Bank as well as the management of the bank for the magnificent building and Mrs. Sola Ibidapo-Obe for accepting the association’s request to name the building after her husband as a lasting legacy in his honour. He encouraged everyone to take good care of and maintain the building to serve the university community for years to come.

In her remarks, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, acknowledged the invaluable contributions of Zenith Bank to the development of the school, promising to work with the Alumni association to ensure that the facility serves not only the Alumni but also the entire students populace. She thanked the Founder and Chairman of Zenith Bank, Jim Ovia, CFR, for donating 3,500 tablets to the university, which ensured that students who could not afford laptops for e-learning during the covid-19 pandemic were not left behind.

In her remarks, the wife of the Late Prof. Oyewusi Ibidapo-Obe, Mrs. Sola Ibidapo-Obe, thanked the Founder and Chairman of Zenith Bank, Jim Ovia, CFR, for immortalising her late husband with such a great edifice named after him. Recalling how close he was to her late husband, Mrs Ibidapo-Obe said: “You are my husband’s friend. Dr. Jim Ovia has demonstrated the love that does not die in his friendship with my beloved husband. When he fell ill, Dr. Jim Ovia was there from day one till the last moment. I could feel the way he felt. From then, I knew that he was a genuine friend. He tried his best to ensure my husband survived, but he did not”.

The iconic building, which sits on a total site area of 950m2, was constructed by a team of world-class builders who had the mandate of delivering the best quality possible. The iconic structure is a smart building that incorporates many of the elements that make a facility environmentally friendly and sustainable, including a grid-tie solar system that sustains power load on solar and not on a generator or national grid, an inverter-driven VRF air conditioning system and motion sensor lighting to enhance energy efficiency, perforated aluminium composite panels for natural lighting and ventilation, free Wi-Fi system to provide internet access for students, fire management systems, including fire hydrant, smoke detector, and fire alarm system, and a LED screen installed on the building for the dissemination of information. The iconic building will house the Unilag Branch of Zenith Bank Plc and the operations of Unilag Alumni. Of the total 1,665m2 of floor area designated for office use in the four-storey building, 585m2 will be used by Unilag Alumni.

Ogun: How Gov Abiodun Insulted Late Solarin- Falana

0

Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun state has denigrated the late educationist and public advocate, Tai Solarin according to Femi Falana, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN.

Falana spoke on Sunday few days after the governor renamed Tai Solarin College of Education, Sikiru Adetona College of Education Science and Technology, SACOETECH.

Adetona is the Awujale of Ijebuland.

The governor’s decision to change the institution name has not been well received by many Nigerians who consider it an attack on the memory of the late Solarin who during his lifetime was an advocate of the poor and great lover and promote of education.

Falana has now added his voice to the public outraged that greeted Governor Abiodun’s action.

According to the rights activist, the governor should have named another state monument after the monarch, instead of wiping off the memory of Solarin.

The gobernor had on November 24, unveiled the renamed institution as Sikiru Adetona College of Education, Science and Technology (SACOETEC), saying he had the approval of the state house of assembly.

Falama however said the governor’s action was distatefu considering the late Solarin’s immense contribution to education in the country.

According to him, “It is indisputable that the late Dr. Tai Solarin, the founder of the Mayflower School, Ikenne, contributed immensely to the educational development of Nigeria.

“In appreciation of the contribution of the late educationist, the Ogun State government rightly named a tertiary institution after him, the Tai-Solarin College of Education, Science and Technology (SACOETEC).

“Surprisingly, the Dapo Abiodun administration has announced its decision to rename the College of Education after a highly respected monarch, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the Awujale of Ijebu-Ode.

“The decision ought to be jettisoned as the governor has not adduced any reason for denigrating the indelible record of the late foremost educationist.

“However, in view of the contribution of the Awujale to the cultural development of Ogun State and his consistent defence of justice and fair play in the country, the Ogun state government is advised to name an important institution after the monarch.

“The governor does not have to assault the memory of the great Solarin in order to honour the eminent Awujale.

“Besides, the governor should be wary of the historical implications of such a seemingly insensitive decision.

“For the immense contributions that Solarin made to enhance our collective humanity, his memory cannot be honoured enough. Indeed, any country should be proud of the legacies of Tai Solarin and be interested in immortalising him.”

The late Solarin and his wife, were until their death great supporters of education in the country. The couple  set up Mayflower Schools where many Nigerians of diverse backgrounds were educated. Not a few consider the governor’s action as one of the many blunders of his administration.

Abuja/Kaduna Train Services Resume This Week; FG Working On Security

0
Kaduna Train Victims

Expectation is high as all is now set for the resumption of the Abuja-Kaduna train services this week more than eight months after it was stopped by the federal government due to a terrorist attack.

But the train service will not resume today contrary to expectations, the federal government has said.

As a prelude to the resumption of commercial train services between the nation’s capital and Kaduna, the government has announced some security measures to prevent further attacks on passengers.

On March 28, this year, some terrorists attacked a train on its way from Abuja to Kaduna killing some passengers and kidnapping others whom they kept in their custody for months until they were later released.

But the Minister of Transportation, Mua’zu Sambo said some security measures have now been put in place to prevent such occurrences.

Part of the measures includes the requirement for passengers to provide their telephone numbers and national identity card, as passengers  will no longer be allowed to “buy a ticket unless you have a valid phone number and you have a NIN.”

Mua’zu said, ”I want to be very categorical about that. Now, we have introduced a new system before you buy a ticket. Your purchase of a ticket requires you to provide a phone number and a national identification number to profile because that is the beginning of the security checks.

”So, at any point in time when a train moves from one station to another, we know who and who is on board. If you don’t have an NIN you are not going to board our train. It is as simple as that.

”If you are a minor, an adult will pay for you and will register for you and an adult can only register for not more than four minors.”

Enugu: Gunmen Declare 10 Days Sit-at-Home Order; Warns Schools Against Hoisting Nigerian Flag, Uniforms

By Charles Igbo

The security situation in Enugu State has entered an unprecedented dangerous stage.

Gunmen have declared a 10-day sit-at-home order in the Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area of the State.

They have warned anybody to dare breach their order, or try to stop them.

The hoodlums did not stop at that. They warned Primary and Secondary Schools to remove the Nigerian flag hoisted on their premises. They equally ordered those whose school uniforms have any green and white colours to discard such uniforms immediately.

The gunmen also declared a popular market Eke Ozzi, in Ogrute, the  Headquarters of Local Government,  a no- go area and warned of dire consequences if anybody dared.

Their actions, they said, are  a consequence of the killing of one of their members. They confiscated a good number of motorcycles from their owners.

The situation has put the people in a terrible state. Not only are they afraid for their lives, they also fear that hunger would deal them a devastating blow.

At the time of filing this story, there has been no reaction from either the State Government or the State Police Command.

Nobody has, so far, identified which group the gunmen belong to.

“I Cannot Be Blackmailed To Abandon Peace” – Governor Uzodinma

0
Hope Uzodinma

Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has said that peace is inevitable for development and progress to be achieved in the State.

He also added that no amount of blackmail, propaganda, backbiting will deter him from pursuing peace in Imo State and from doing things that will please God, more so as blackmail has been proven to be as old as mankind.

The Governor said this at the end of a Thanksgiving Service in honour of the Hon. Justice Chinaemerem Ucheoma Enyinna Onuegbu, wife his Chief Political Adviser and Head Political Bureau, Barrister Enyinna Onuegbu at the Anglican Church of the Pentecost, Area ‘H’ New Owerri on Sunday.

Addressing the congregation at the end of the Service, the Governor noted that the synergy between the church and government remains non negotiable because “there is every need for government to seek the prayers of the church for it to succeed,” noting that “when one eye is bleeding the other eye is also bleeding.”

He acknowledged that in Imo, it is only God that has helped the State to continue to exist and regretted that “many people have refused to see good things happening even when their eyes are open.”

Making reference to the sermon of day that harped on  “trusting God” and drawn from Psalm 72:12,  the Governor said that it is only God that gives life and as citizens we are having life because God exists.  “Be you a Christian, Muslim, bishop, politician or businessman, God sees all of us and what we do.”

Governor Uzodinma said that Imo State is happy that God has given us life, which is the primary thing.

His words: “Because politics, business, the types of things we do are all secondary and when we live the primary things and do the secondary ones we are deceiving ourselves.

“In the same vain, when we play politics of do and die we are daring God.”

He wondered why people should break their heads over those things they cannot do on their own.

The Governor noted that whenever he listens to the word of God it emboldens him and encourages him to do those things that please God and not man.

He then emphasized that blackmail, conspiracy and backbiting are as old as the existence of man and cannot deter him from doing what he is doing that pleases his creator.

The Governor said he will continue to support the Church “because without the Church I can do nothing.”

“We need prayers. The Church should continue to pray for the families, the state government and Nigeria in general to succeed.”,

The Governor informed the congregation that Imo State has already overcome the spate of insecurity perpetrated in different names by those who swore to make Imo ungovernable for Governor Hope Uzodinma.

Furthermore, he insisted that infrastructural development, promotion of civil servants and the quantum of prosperity expected by the populace can only come in an atmosphere of peace.

He pleaded with God Almighty to continue to protect His people as our helper.

Governor Uzodinma promised that he will stop at nothing in making sure things are done properly in Imo State. “That is why as a Governor I will strive to live legacy for which I will be positively remembered. Governors have come and gone but by their fruits we shall know them.”,

The Governor told the congregation that when he makes donations to the Church he is not asking the Church to do things that are not right for him rather he “makes donations to Jesus Christ who is the owner of the Church.”

He, therefore, proceeded to announce a donation of N10 million to assist the Church in the building of their Hall.

Earlier in his sermon, the Bishop of Anglican Diocese of Ohaji/Egbema, Rt. Rev. Chidi Collins Oparajiaku admonished the congregation to always take their problems to God, emphasizing that “God is the helper of the helpless and God opens doors for those who trust in Him.”

The Service was attended by top government officials including the Deputy Governor, Prof Placid Njoku, the Speaker Imo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Emeka Nduka, his Principal Officers and members, the Chief Judge of Imo State, Justice Theresa Chikeka and other top members of the Bar and Bench,  the Chief of Staff, Barr. Nnamdi Anyaehie, members of the Imo State expanded executive council, traditional rulers, business moguls, among others.
