Dogara’s Group Is Toothless – Southern And Middle  Belt Alliance;  Disowns  Atiku’s Endorsement; Remembers Deborah

Southern And Middle Belt Alliance

By Adesina Soyooye

The division between Northern Christians over which Presidential candidate to back in 2023 has widened.

A Caucus of  Northern Christians in Politics had been working together since early 2022. Headed by former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, with Yakubu Dogara, former Speaker of the House of Representatives as Secretary, nobody quite knew of the Group’s existence until the Presidential Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the Party which most of them belong to, picked former Governor of Borno State, a Muslim like him, as his running mate.

The Northern Christian Caucus saw it as an insult. They called the same-faith ticket of the APC satanic and a plot to divide the North. So, they decided not to back the APC ticket. Its leadership said the Caucus would consult and decide on which of the Candidates to back.

A couple of days ago, Lawal, during an interview with Channels Television, said they have decided to back the Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, and gave the reasons why.

However, a few hours after Lawal’s interview, a group of the Caucus’ members, led by Dogara, disowned Lawal. In a statement, they said there was no consultation on who to back yet. They said Lawal was on his own, and that they would meet to decide who to back.

Not surprisingly, given the swiftness with which they disowned Lawal, on Thursday, Dogara and his group, at a meet in Abuja, announced they have decided to back the Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, thus publicly discountenoucing Lawal’s endorsement of Obi.

The PDP Presidential Campaign Council in a statement signed by its Spokesperson, Senator Dino Melaye, celebrated Atiku’s endorsement by the Dogara Group to no end.

But their celebration has suddenly been cut short.

Here is why.

The Southern And Middle Belt Alliance, (SaMBA), a group of Northern Leaders, has distanced itself from what it described as the purported endorsement of Atiku by Dogara’s NLCF.

In a statement SaMBA issued in Abuja on Saturday, signed by its Spokesperson, Prince Rwang Pam, Jnr, it dismissed Dogara’s NLCF as a toothless platform. It said the NLCF was manipulated by politicians who have been benefiting from the old order, and wondered on what basis anybody would tell them to back Atiku.

The Group asked what millions of Southern and Middle Belt people have benefited from Atiku. They recalled Atiku’s reaction to the gruesome murder of Deborah, the third year student of the Federal College of Education, Sokoto who was stoned to death and her body set ablaze by her Muslim Colleagues for, alleged blasphemy.

The statement recalled that not only did Atiku order that the post put out on his behalf be stood down, till date, he has neither condoled Deborah’s parents nor visited them.

SaMBA statement reads:

“Our attention has been drawn to the purported endorsement of the Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar by a toothless Northern Leaders Consultative Forum (NLCF), coordinated by former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, who by this action has lost favour amongst his Middle Belt family.

“We want to state categorically that the communique by Rt. Honourable Dogara’s Group is self-serving and does not remotely substantially represent the interest of Middle Belters who occupy, approximately, 300,000 Sq. Km of the Northern Region – that is about 50 %.

“Also, it is on record that Alhaji Atiku Abubakar who declined to speak publicly against the gruesome murder of Deborah Yakubu in Sokoto will not defend the interest of Middle Belters and Christians living in the North.

“Atiku who had been Vice President between 1999-2007, belongs to the old order. He will not be able to restructure Nigeria to the yearnings of Nigerians.

“Therefore, the endorsement of the Presidential candidate of Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP), cannot stand, and will not stand. Their lame excuse that the Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi, does not have a structure is false.

“Progressive Nigerians are the structures, and Dogara’s Middle Belters, remain solidly in support of Mr Peter Obi and Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed.”

SaMBA is on the same page with Babachir Lawal, and like him and his Group, has endorsed Obi.

First Lady, Aisha Buhari Must Compensate Detained Student, Adamu – NANS Demands

Aminu Mohammed and Aisha Buhari

By Ayodele Oni

National Association of Nigerians Students, (NANS) has demanded public apology and compensation from the first lady, Aisha Buhari over the arrest and detention of  a student, Aminu Adamu for his comments about her.

NANS, in a statement by its Ogun State Chairman of Joint Campus Committee (JCC), Kehinde Damilola Simeon, on Saturday in Abuja, said the arrest and detention of Adamu for almost two weeks on the orders of the First Lady was an abuse of power.

Adamu, 24, was arrested by the police in Dutse and moved to Abuja for allegedly publishing a defamatory statement on his Twitter handle against Mrs Buhari.

He was arraigned on Tuesday before Justice Yusuf Halilu of the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Maitama, where he pleaded not guilty and was remanded at Suleja prison in Niger State.

Withdrawing the case against the accused on Friday, the prosecution counsel, Fidelis Ogbobe said the First Lady as the mother of the nation, took the decision following the intervention of well-meaning Nigerians.

NANS has, however said the release and meeting with the President were not enough, insisting that the student should be compensated with an apology letter.

“We consider that the meeting of the President with Aminu after his release from detention is not enough.

“Madam Aisha Buhari should apologize publicly in at least four daily newspapers. Aminu and his family should be compensated for the inhumane condition the first family had thrown them into in the last few days.

“Democracy, as a practiced system in Nigeria is not only anchored on election and wearing of agbada by the leaders.

“Its is dependent on civil liberties such as freedom of speech, rule of law, equity, and every other principle needed for the respect of human economic, social, and political rights.

“These principles, are what we consider as the fundamental basis for demanding the release of the unjustly victimized Nigerian student, Aminu Adamu, who had only said nothing but the truth which is visible to all.

“As a result of solidarity actions of NANS, Civil Societies, and other notable Nigerians, the First Lady, Aisha Buhari, shamefully succumbed to pressure and withdrew the baseless case she had instituted against Aminu.

“This is coming after days of detention, denial of freedom, and assault of all kinds. We need not imagine the mental and physical distress the whole family of Aminu must have been thrown into in the last few days knowing what it means to have a case against the ruling class in Nigeria as a common man.

“This single action of Aisha Buhari has shown us that she is no different from the cabal surrounding her husband which she has always pretended to be exposed to in the past.

“This abuse of power can also be said to be deliberate in sending a message to Nigerians that their party is not deserving of people’s vote.”

Ondo: Akeredolu Admits Receipt Of 13% Derivation Fund, Gives Account Of Its Spending, Denies Diverting LG Funds

By Ayodele Oni

Ondo State Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN,  has confirmed the receipt of 13 per cent oil derivation, subsidy and SURE-P refunds from the Federation Account in the last two years (2021-2022).

President Mohammadu Buhari had said that oil producing states received various amounts as their share from 13 percent oil derivation and that more are still coming.

The President also accused state Governors of tinkering with local funds, after which they will give peanut to the councils.

A statement signed by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Richard Olatunde, explained that the refunds received by the state were expended on capital projects and payment of accumulated salary arrears.

The statement also disassociated Governor Akeredolu from those alleged to have been stealing funds meant for the Local Governments from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC).

According to the statement, the refunds received from the Federal Government were judiciously expended on some key capital projects across the three senatorial districts of the state.

“Some of the impactful projects undertaken and completed by this administration include the rehabilitation and asphalt overlay of the 32.6km Araromi-Alape road in Ilaje Local Government Area; 16.65km Ikaramu-Akunnu-chainnage 7-Oke Agbe Road in Akoko Northwest Local Government Area; 4.5km Agadagba Obon-New Ajapa Road in Ese-Odo Local Government Area; 3.0km Oke Igbo Township roads, Ile-Oluji/Okeigbo Local Government Area, among others.

“Recently, the Governor commenced the rehabilitation of over 35 kilometers network of roads in Akure, the state capital.

“The roads, being rehabilitated are the existing ones built by past governments several years ago and which are already in bad shapes with potholes and failed sections. The 9.5km Emure- Iporo Road and rehabilitation of 15.2km Akure phase “D” road networks have all begun.

“The 10km Okitipupa-Igbokoda virgin road which will be commissioned by the Lagos State Governor, Mr.Babajide Sanwo-Olu, is another evidence of Governor Akeredolu’s commitment to infrastructural development.

“These intensive capital projects are financed from these refunds and Internally Generated Revenue.

“The monthly FAAC receipts are devoted to the payment of salaries and pensions as agreed by Labour Leaders at the monthly meetings presided over by the Head of Service and Chairman of Joint Negotiating Council (JNC).

“Despite Governor Akeredolu’s vow to always pay salaries and pensions as and when due, the financial crisis across the country occasioned by the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic resulted in non-payment of salaries in full for some months.

“As at January 2022, Government was owing four months salary arrears as against seven months inherited.

“Governor Akeredolu, having promised the civil servants in the state to prioritize payment of salaries, has continued to clear these backlogs of arrears.

“On three occasions this year, Government has paid double salaries in a month, thereby reducing the number of arrears. All salaries will be cleared before the year ends.

“If the amount expended on these infrastructural projects and payment of salary arrears is juxtaposed with the refunds, it is crystal clear that the monies were not mismanaged in Ondo State.

“The administration of Governor Akeredolu stands on the tripod of Transparency, Accountability and Integrity. We will continue to hoist the flag of transparency in governance while pursuing excellence in the journey to transform the state for the better.”

On the allegation that some Governors are stealing Local Government Funds, the statement noted that the Akeredolu administration has not touched funds meant for Local Governments since its inception.

“As a matter of policy, monies meant for Local Governments are shared at their monthly Joint Account Allocation Committee (JAAC).

“Mr Governor doesn’t touch Local governments funds. The local Government Chairmen can attest to the fact that they have total freedom in the management of their funds.”

Osun: Islamic Group, MURIC, Alleges Marginalization Of Christians By Adeleke; Not True, People Respond

0

By Adesina Soyooye

In a move seen by not a few people as a deliberate mischief to cause tension in Osun State, an Islamic Organisation, Muslim Rights Concern, MURIC, has accused the State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, of favoring Muslims to the detriment of Christians.

The suspicious and mischievous allegation by MURIC  stem from the fact that its Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, has always been fiercely against the Christian Faith.

Governor Adeleke was sworn into office barely a week ago, precisely, on 27th November, 2023. Since he came into office, he has made only three appointments.

The appointments he made are those of his Chief of Staff, Kassim Akinleye who was a former Chairman of Osogbo  Local Government Area, Secretary to the State Government, Teslim Igbaloye, and his long standing Media Aide, Olawale Rasheed, as his Chief Press Secretary.

So, what is the problem with the appointments and/or with the persons so appointed?

Professor Akintola said the appointees are all of the Muslim Faith. He said the Governor made the appointments without considering the feelings of Christians. He said the offices of the COS and the SSG, are the two most important ones outside the office of the Governor. And asked the Governor to split the two offices between Muslims and Christians. He condemned the three appointments “on the ground that it has marginalised Christians. And said the appointments are unfair to Christians and negate the spirit of justice and equity.

He, also, accused the Governor of dancing to the tune of Muslims to make up for the doubts raised about him – whether he is Christian or Muslim during the Campaign for Governorship.

Akintola, therefore, wants the Governor to appoint either the SSG or the COS a Commissioner, and give the office to a Christian.

In a strongly worded statement, the MURIC Director, who had earlier expressed his discomfort over the appointments said:

“As a follow-up to our statement of yesterday in which we expressed doubts about the Faith of the three Muslims appointed as Chief Press Secretary (CPS), Chief of Staff (COS) and Secretary to the State Government (SSG) by the new Governor of Osun State, Ademola Adeleke, we hereby attest that our investigations into the matter have confirmed that all three men are bona fide Muslims.

“The SSG, Rasheed Olawale, is a former Chairman of Osogbo Local Government. He sponsored a popular Islamic radio program anchored by Dr. Taofeeq Abdul Hameed and Alhaji Musbaudeen Orimadegun in and out of office for years.

“The COS, Kazeem Akinleye, is also an ex-Chairman of Ede North local Government. Muslims who know him very well have confirmed that he is an upright Muslim and an Islamic scholar in his own right.

“The Governor’s Spokesperson (CPS), Teslim Igbalaye, is from Iwo. He is even popularly referred to as ‘Malam’.

“MURIC will always admit the truth even if it contradicts its former stand (although we did not say categorically that they were not Muslims). We are not in this struggle for the purpose of scoring cheap political points. On the contrary, it is the truth that we seek to establish.

“It is in this spirit that we object to the appointment of the same three Muslims into the most prestigious offices by Governor Adeleke. Just as we argued yesterday, those three juicy posts should not have been given to Muslims since (and if) the governor himself is a Muslim.

“How can the Governor, the SSG, the COS and the CPS be Muslims in a pluralistic setting like Osun? Something does not add up here.

“Adeleke has played into the hands of those who accuse him of being a secret Christian. They alleged that the nomenclature ‘Nurudeen’ suddenly appeared in the twilight of the 2018 electioneering campaign to curry Muslim votes. He is now trying to appease them. But things do not work like that.

“MURIC is known for criticizing governors who marginalize Muslims in political appointments. We cannot keep quiet now after seeing the way ‘Nurudeen’ has marginalized Christians in his first appointments. We cried to high heaven when Fayose ran an all-Christian government in Ekiti State with the SSG, COS, CPS, all fourteen commissioners, the chairmen of all eight boards and parastatals except the Muslim pilgrimage board being Christians.

“We fight oppression. We will not oppress. We will not support the idea of a Muslim leader oppressing Christians. This ‘Nurudeen’ who has just occupied the government house in Oshogbo is not being fair to Christians if all major appointments made so far are in favour of Muslims. Islam teaches justice, fairness and equity.

“This is what Qur’an 4:135 commands Muslims to do regarding justice and fairness. It says, ‘Stand firmly for justice and be witnesses for Allah, even if it is against yourselves or your parents, or your kin and whether it is against the rich or poor’. In addition, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) forbids cheating and oppression. He said in an hadith, ‘Do not oppress and you will not be oppressed’.

“It is in the light of these Islamic teachings that we disown Adeleke’s first appointments. What Islam teaches is different from what ‘Nurudeen’ has done. We distance Osun Muslims from his action. Islam teaches inclusiveness, ‘Nurudeen’ prefers to exclude Christians in the state. It is not in our character. We believe in loving and sharing.

“We therefore call on the new governor to review the appointments with immediate effect. One or two of the appointees can be moved to the ministries as commissioners. From what we have seen, if we do not act fast, ‘Nurudeen’ may wake up tomorrow and give all cabinet positions to Muslims leaving only the Christian Pilgrims Board for a Christian. Although Muslims are in the majority in Osun, we will not encourage lopsided appointment in a pluralistic society.

“‘Nurudeen’ is setting an awkward precedent unless the appointments are reviewed. It can be used against us in future. Somebody may accuse Muslims of marginalising Christians of the State of Osun. We must also remember that the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) is waiting in the wings.

“That brings another angle to what ‘Nurudeen’ has done in the state of Osun. A supposedly Muslim governor appointed three Muslims to the most juicy positions in the state and CAN has not spit fire and brimstone. It is not in CAN’s character. Something is fishy. This may be a setup.

“Why is CAN silent? Why are they not protesting after seeing the way the three biggest slots were given to Muslims just a la carte. MURIC smells a rat. Governor Nurudeen Ademola Adeleke may be acting a script written on the altar. A trap is being set for Osun Muslims.

“Notwithstanding the Jekyll and Hyde scenario, we like to warn the new governor not to cross the red line. Hijab and public schools are our red lines. Any attempt to change the status quo will court the fury of Muslims in the State of Osun. A word is enough for the wise.”

But not a few people smell mischief on the part of Professor Akintola. They point out that he will never wish Christians well, and accuse him of playing to the gallery.  Here is the same man, they point out,  who, a couple of weeks ago, asked Muslims to stop attending Universities owned by Christians; the same man who advised Muslims in the South-west not to vote for a Christian as Nigeria’s President.

They ask: When did Akintola become the Spokesperson of Christians in Osun?

Said one of them: “What we smell is mischief. Akintola is deliberately instigating Christians against Adeleke’s Government. He is inciting them against Adeleke. He is trying to cause religious crisis and heat up the system. But it will not work.

“We know our Governor. He is a man of peace and fairness. He will never marginalise any religion.”

It’s Fake, Tinubu Not Denied US Visit; Will Visit Third Week December – Orji Kalu

0

By Adesina Soyooye

The viral news that the Presidential Candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Bola Tinubu, was denied entry Visa to the United States of America has been dismissed as  fake.

The story which made the rounds on Thursday said the Embassy of the US in Abuja, Nigeria, denied Tinubu Visa. This, the  report claimed, forced Tinubu to change his itinerary. Instead of his planned US trip, he will be headed to Chattam House, United Kingdom.

But Orji Kalu, Senate Chief Whip, in a post on his Facebook Saturday, dismissed the story as fake, and a lie from the pit of hell.

According to Orji, it was Tinubu who  postponed the trip to the US due to his schedule.

Inquiries from the State Department, Orji disclosed, showed that the APC Presidential Candidate is expected to arrive the US about the third week of December, and is being expected by US officials. He attributed the fake news to the opposition.

Orji: “As the election draws closer, the opposition will spread more fake news against our Presidential candidate but we should always ignore and keep our eyes on the ball.

“The news that Tinubu was denied Visa to the USA is as fake as other fake news. Tinubu postponed the travel himself and was never denied Visa.

“The State Department of the US confirmed to me that Tinubu will be received in the third week of December.

“As the Presidential candidate of our party with outstanding personality, he will be warmly welcomed in the United States.”

As Oyetola, APC Close Case At Election Petition Tribunal, PDP, Adeleke To Respond December 20

0

By Ayodele Oni

The All Progressive Congress (APC) and Gboyega Oyetola have closed their case at the Osun state Election Petition Tribunal.

This is just as the tribunal admitted in evidence the file with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) containing the secondary school certificate and testimonial of Governor Ademola Adeleke of the State.

The respondents, INEC, PDP, Ademola Adeleke are expected to open their defence when the tribunal resumes sitting on December 20 to present their defence.

The admission of the documents followed the appearance of INEC representative, Mrs. Joan Arabs, who brought Adeleke’s original files containing the certificate he submitted to the Commission in 2018.

During the last sitting of the panel, the Commission had submitted blank document as the secondary school certificate of the governor, a situation that compelled the panel to order that the original file be brought, threatening to invoke Coercive Power if it fails to do so.

At the resumed hearing of the petition on Saturday, Counsel for Oyetola, Chief Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), said the hearing for the day was basically meant for the appearance of INEC representative to produce the Adeleke’s file in line with the court order.

Counsel for INEC, in his response, said that INEC representative was already in court with the files containing a clearer and legible certificate and testimonial in question, saying he would be willing to apply for the return of the documents to INEC, when the tribunal is done looking at it.

After the production of the documents, the tribunal, while discharging the INEC official, said, “You can now go if you wish to. No policeman will accost you again.”

Subsequently, Oyetola’s counsel sought to tender the documents which contain form CFO01 and its attachments, including Adeleke’s credentials, saying the original file brought to court is a primary evidence and he was comfortable with it.

Counsel for INEC, Chief Henry Agunedo (SAN), said he would be objecting to the admissibility of the documents on the ground that the basis for the production of the whole file was because only two pages of the earlier-produced Certified True Copies were in contention, saying tendering the whole documents was out of place.

Counsel for Adeleke and PDP, Niyi Owolade and Alex Izinyon (SAN) respectively, said they have objection to the tendering of the said documents, but they would reserve their objections till final address stage.

Izinyon also observed that the only documents in contention were only two pages which are Adeleke’s certificate and testimonial, saying the CTC earlier produced has not been tendered before the court.

Responding, Fagbemi said the practice everywhere is that INEC can only apply and get back the files after the dispensation of the cases, saying, “We asked for CTC and now that they brought this. We are fine, we will take it.”

Ruling on the documents tendered, the tribunal led by Tertsea Kume admitted the credentials and the Adeleke’s nomination form as exhibit ‘FILE D’ and taken as read.

It was after the tribunal admitted the documents that Fagbemi informed the panel that he had decided to close his case, saying, “My Lord, we rest our case.”

When the tribunal asked INEC to open his defence, Chief Agunedo said, it would be difficult for him to open his case on Monday, saying non-availability of his witnesses would make it practically impossible.

The panel then asked the counsel to meet and agree on adjournment date after which Counsel for INEC briefed the panel the outcome of the meeting.

Subsequently, the tribunal adjourned the case till December 20 for the respondents to open their defence, saying the adjournment was based on another engagement by the tribunal somewhere else between 12th and 19th December 2022.

Ahead 202 : INEC Wants Perpetrators Of Violence Prosecuted, Says Campaigns Characterized By Thuggery

0

By Ayodele Oni

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu has disclosed that since political activities kick-started ahead 2023 general elections, there have been a lot of negative activities on the part of politicians.

He said that there has been violence, saying  “As at November 9, this year, we tracked 52 incidence involving a lot of abuses, abusive language, denial of facilities to opposition parties during campaign which involves instructions of physical attack.”

Prof Yakubu disclosed in Lagos on Saturday that “For us, I have said it on several occasions including the emergency meeting with the security agencies that a peaceful campaign is a preclude to peaceful election.

“I am glad that immediately after that emergency meeting in Abuja, the leaders of the political parties agreed in the meeting, but we also agreed that beyond appealing to them to emulate good behaviour, what is paramount is enforcement of the law against violation.

“Anyone who is constituting violence must be seen to be apprehended and be prosecuted as provided by the law. This is the best antidote to bad behaviour.”

The chairman also expressed worries over the persistent attacks on its facilities nationwide, calling for prosecution of perpetrators.

He made the remarks at the One-Day Strategic Consultative Meeting with Media Executives in Lagos, on Saturday, facilitated by INEC in collaboration with the EU Funded Programme “Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria”, EU-SDGN and DAI.

According to Yakubu, the persistent attacks has resulted in destruction of the commission’s physical infrastructures, election materials and a threat to the safety and security of its personnel.

While calling on speedy apprehension and immediate prosecution of violators as provided by the law, he appealed to political parties to emulate good behaviour.

He also commended the media practitioners for their immense support in tackling misinformation and fake news.

“In the area of election Security, the persistent attack around facilities nationwide is a bit source of concern.

“Damaging of physical infrastructure, election materials, a threat to the safety and security of our personnel worry us a lot.

“In the last four months, five, now six of our local government offices were attacked, two in Enugu State, the same strategic attack and method was used in Abeokuta South Local Area of Ogun and Osun States.

“This attack means a lot because the office was renovated by the commission. We moved to the office on Friday but the office was set ablaze on Sunday, two days later.

“We were looking for the best Facilities, best materials for the election including the PVCs and other materials; it is a major source of concern.

“Less than a week after the attack, our office in a Local Government Area in Imo state was attacked.

“Some construction workers were attacked, three of them were not immediately accounted for, but we got the information later that they were reported, no fatalities. After the attack, we replaced the PVCs, we replaced about 2,000 ballot boxes and other facilities.”

FG Counts Loses Due To Stoppage Of Abuja/Kaduna Train Service

0

By Ayodele Oni

The Federal Government has been counting loses incurred as a result of the stoppage of the train service along Abuja – Kaduna route.

The operation was halted early this year when bandits attacked and abducted some passengers travelling from Kaduna to Abuja.

The federal government has however announced that the train service is expected to commence operation soon but only those with valid National Identification Number, (NIN) will enjoy the service.

Speaking on Saturday, the Managing Director, Nigeria Railway Corporation, Fidet Okhiria, disclosed that the Federal Government lost about N113m due to non-operation of trains at the Abuja-Kaduna railway for over eight months.

Okhiria who disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria, (NAN), in Abuja said many Nigerians also incurred some losses indirectly due to the halt of operations on the route.

According to him ”The last time we checked that was between the months of February to August. We have lost about N113 million.

“Using what we were earning between January and March, so we had to use it as a working document. Although, when the train was working, there are a lot of other businesses that were going on.

“There were people selling on the train, there were people selling around the stations, and there were people that had opened shops and people were patronizing them because the trains were running.

“So those were indirect benefit and cost that have been lost to the Nigerian economy.

“More so, somebody who would have travelled from Kaduna to Abuja via train for some form of transaction and couldn’t make it because the trains were not running would have also lost something.

“The economic benefits is also lost, so we should not only look at the Naira and kobo that railway would have been able to make from it, but include all other losses by Nigerians.”

Why We Rejected Obi, Tinubu, Kwankwaso – Northern Leaders Consultative Forum

0

COMMUNIQUE OF THE MEETING OF NORTHERN LEADERS CONSULTATIVE FORUM HELD AT YAR’ADUA CENTER, ABUJA.

DATED 2ND DECEMBER, 2022

PREAMBLE

The Northern Leaders Consultative Forum, a body comprised of Muslim and Christian leaders across the 19 Northern States and FCT was set up on the 8th October, 2022 with the mandate to consult among all strata of people in Northern Nigeria with a view to identifying the political party to support for the 2023 presidential elections. This was necessitated by the rejection of the same faith Muslim-Muslim ticket of the APC.

ACTIONS

The Forum set up a Technical Criteria Committee with the mandate to develop a framework and criteria for the assessment of the leading political parties and their presidential candidates and recommend the ticket that represents our religious, ethnic and geographical diversities, capable of bringing about peace, unity, cohesion and inclusiveness.

The Committee has completed its assignment and presented its report to the Forum. The Forum has accordingly adopted the report and hereby issues the following communiqué:

That the four leading political parties that were considered by the Technical Committee for the purpose of this assignment are:

  1. The All Progressives Congress (APC)
  2. The New Nigeria Peoples’ Party (NNPP)

iii. The Labour Party (LP) and

  1. The Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP).

DECISIONS

  1. The NNPP and the Labour Party
  2. That the presidential tickets of the NNPP and LP are inclusive, representing our religious diversity as a country populated by a dominant population of Muslims and Christians.
  1. It is however noted that the NNPP and LP have not yet unveiled their Strategic Policy Plan for Nigerians to interrogate. This is less than 3 months to the general elections. And so, it is safe to say that no one except the two parties know the direction in which they intend to take the country. Nigerians cannot go into an election blind folded, especially in view of the myriad of problems bedeviling the nation.
  1. The NNPP and LP do not have all round grassroots structures required of a political party seeking the highest office in the country. They do not have reasonable presence of its members in positions of governance at national, state and local government levels. The few if any, have only recently decamped to the parties. There seems to be a dearth of experienced hands within their parties to pilot the affairs of state.
  1. Based on INEC’s final list of candidates for the 2023 elections, the NNPP could not field in all the seats for the office of Governor and House of Representatives while LP could not field in all the candidates at the levels of Governor, National Assembly (Senate and House of representatives) and State Houses of Assembly.

The NNPP and LP do not have the required structures to win the presidential election and even if they win, they cannot be able to smoothly run the government as they will not have the required parliamentary majority to successfully pilot the affairs of government.

  1. The All progressives Congress (APC)

The APC as we all know has fielded the same faith (Muslim-Muslim) ticket which excludes a large demography of Christians who do not feel represented by the ticket. The APC presidential ticket does not promote inclusiveness, unity, religious harmony and cohesion. A large population of Muslims have also expressed reservations to this ticket and have called for fairness and inclusivity.

Consequently, this ticket is outrightly rejected by the Forum and the Forum hereby calls on all lovers of democracy, peaceful coexistence, unity and religious harmony to reject the ticket in its entirety.

III. The Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP)

  1. That the PDP presidential ticket is representative of our religious diversity as a people.
  1. The presidential candidate of the PDP, Atiku Abubakar is the only candidate among the candidates of the four leading political parties that has the knowledge and experience of managing the country at the presidential level. This gives him the advantage to set the ball rolling from day one.
  1. That the PDP presidential candidate has a track record of working harmoniously with all classes of people across religious and ethnic divides.
  1. That the PDP presidential candidate is a well-known talent hunter who has demonstrated capacity to hunt highly experienced talents across different sectors and bring them into government. This country needs highly talented people at this critical time to pull the country out of the doldrums and bring it back to the path of stability, security and prosperity.

RESOLUSIONS

The Forum therefore adopts the PDP and the Atiku/Okowa Presidential ticket as the right ticket to support in the 2023 presidential elections, as it addresses all the concerns of inclusiveness, fairness and national cohesion.

The Forum recommends for support the Atiku Abubakar/Ifeanyi okowa presidential ticket to all well-meaning Nigerians across the ethnic, sectional and religious diversities, in order to foster unity, peace, development and progress.

2023: “Selling Pure Water Is Better Than A Certain White Substance”

0

By Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed

  1. Ladies and Gentlemen of the Press, I am glad to welcome you to this Press Conference which is informed by the need to set records straight and highlight some incremental challenges to the signed Peace Accord.
  1. Peter Obi is a successful businessman, a two term Governor, Vice Presidential Candidate in 2019, who subsequently moved to Labour Party, where he is now the Presidential Candidate enjoying tremendous goodwill and overwhelming support of the people.
  1. In the squabble for second and third positions, some erstwhile major political parties appear to have crossed the boundaries of decency to transgress our peaceful activities and our focus on political schedules.
  1. On the 29th September 2022, an eminent group of statesmen under the aegis of the National Peace Committee, brought together all the Presidential Candidates to sign a Peace Accord, which represents an agreed code of conduct for the 2023 Presidential Elections.
  1. Ladies and Gentlemen of the press, it is unfortunate that despite the noble objectives of this initiative, disinformation and misinformation about the Labour Party and its candidates have become fashionable in this election season.
  1. Recently, for example there was a false narrative being spread nationwide that Mr Peter Obi is against the production of oil in the north; nothing could be farther from the truth.
  1. Peter Obi has repeatedly stated at various local and international fora that the greatest physical asset of Nigeria is the vast rich land in the North, and declared his commitment as a visionary transformative leader to exploit same for the overwhelming benefit of the Nigerian people. To the architect of ‘’consumption to production’, oil in the North means more revenue for development, more jobs and opportunities.
  1. Earlier attempts to discredit the Obi’s candidacy through fabricated allegations of demolition of mosques, internal deportation of Northerners, issuance of ID cards to northerners, and ethic hostilities were all conclusively proven to be false and without basis.
  1. As if those were not enough, just a few days ago, the presidential candidate of the APC speaking in Delta State, and referring to our presidential candidate, said that it was a disgrace to mention his name. While our candidate is quite comfortable with not being mentioned, it is most unpresidential, indecorous and disrespectful from the candidate who claims his turn at Nigerian Presidency.
  1. APCs strategy against Peter Obi now appears very clearly centered on promoting falsehood, in addition to empty and derogatory personal attacks, and of course this is because they can find no contentious points of negativity to push.

11.Little wonder that their Vice Presidential candidate has consistently put to shame the noble heritage of the great Bornu Empire, in his unguarded and uncultured public pronouncements, which expose his intellectual laziness and discomfort with empirical facts and arguments. Regular insults which have now become his trademark, have not spared the current Vice President whom he directed to go and sell ice cream, nor the former Vice President whom he described as a pure water seller, a noble venture which serves the populace better than a certain white substance.

  1. It is pertinent to recall how Mr. Shettima at a recent public event belittled Atiku Abubakar’s educational qualification as well as the modest lifestyle of Peter Obi. Clearly Mr. Shettima is out of touch with reality and cannot understand that people like Peter Obi who have reached the heights in business and material achievement have long transcended the need for ostentatious display of wealth.
  1. We congratulate Mr. Shettima on having improved his dressing, but equally remind him that he needs to improve on his public composure and discipline in communication. Shettima is called upon to speak kindly and more responsibly about all personalities if only to uphold long-established standards.
  1. We cannot also forget his disposition and uncooperative attitude when hundreds of schoolgirls were abducted under his watch as governor in 2014 where he did little to secure them in the first place or facilitate their rapid rescue; a Governor under who education was sustained as ‘forbidden’. The circumstances of his emergence as a Candidate in 2011 leaves yet many questions unanswered.
  1. Others are not left out; It is important to underline that Oaths of office do not expire with tenure, and hence the comment that the Northern electorate do not need a Yoruba or Igbo leader is greatly at variance with the oaths of office taken in 1999 and 2003 respectively, and the Peace Accord of 2022. This is to call upon the owner of the statement to respectfully retract same in order to be readmitted to the honour list of esteemed presidential candidates. Truth of the matter is that every Nigerian from anywhere needs a credible and competent President. Simple.
  1. Going beyond the comments of candidates, it is important to further highlight, some other developments of concern to us in the Labour Party. We are concerned about the fate of areas designated by security agencies as ungoverned spaces which contain legally delineated polling units. It is necessary for INEC to clearly address the nation on how it intends to handle the challenge of conducting elections in these areas.
  1. Over the past few months we have witnessed various attacks on Labour Party Offices, meetings and our members in parts of the country, and even INEC offices have not been spared. Just a couple of days ago, Mrs. Victoria Chintex, our vibrant and able Women Leader in Kaura LG of Kaduna State was assassinated while members of her family escaped with injuries. Senseless killings have gone on for too long. We call on government within time left to at least make attempts at fulfilling its 2015 promise of securing lives and property, while serving justice to the killers. Kindly therefore join me in observing a moment of silence in remembrance of her and indeed all victims all over the country.
  1. We are alarmed by the reported arrest, battery, and detention of Aminu Mohammed, a final-year student of the Federal University Dutse, over an alleged social media post, about the person of the First Lady. While as we have presented earlier in this address, we will never as a party condone indecorous speech and disrespect to elders, we wish to remind the Buhari State House that they rode to power on the personal denigration of their opponents and empty promises without slightest clues of good governance. Individuals must be free to express themselves freely and any infraction of law be pursued as civil matter and not through high-handed abuse of power. This is not 1984. We lend our voice to the genuine calls for his immediate release.
  1. We have so far endured the afore-mentioned and have taken remedial actions where necessary and where not we simply ignored. Civility and respect of law must not be read by misguided elements as signs of weakness on our part. It is not too late to adopt our style of strictly campaigning on relevant practical national issues while respecting individuals, and institutions. Any actions to the contrary the people responsible must know they will be held accountable in the decent manner we have presented our issues here today, and in the ways of the law.
  1. 2023 Elections will be different as Nigerian Electorate are increasingly becoming aware of the dangers of ethnic and religious politics; a fact that causing anxiety, frustration, and desperation with political actors of the old order. Consequently these attacks against us are only likely to increase; we must call on authorities to live up to constitutional responsibilities, and on the general public to regard lies, misinformation, and propaganda for exactly what they are.
  1. The ObiDient Movement under Labour Party will continue to remain faithful to founding principles and the Signed Peace Accord and we equally invite all stake-holders to emulate. The next few weeks will see an escalation of election activity. I urge all who have not yet collected their PVCs, to do so without delay, and to follow through, to identify their polling booths, vote, and defend their votes.
  1. I wish to sincerely thank the vast majority of our people, the Youth and elderly alike, from all across the nation, who have continued not just to embrace Peter Obi, my humble self, and our great party, but who are daily investing their time and resources in making sure that other Nigerians share in their conviction and imbibe the urgency of positive action in the coming elections.

With Us, A New Nigeria is Possible!
