Northern Group Insists CBN Governor Emefiele Must Be Investigated; Urges DSS To Appeal Against Judgement

By Ayodele Oni

A northern Group has insisted that the Governor of the Central Bank, Godwin Emefiele, must be arrested despite a court injunction which has given him a respite.

The Concerned Northern Forum,(CNF) impressed it on the Director- General of Department of State Security Services, (DSS) Mallam Yusuf Magaji Bichi to ignore and immediately appeal against the Federal high court injunction and go ahead with the planned arrest of Mr Emefiele.

The Group maintained that his arrest is in the interest of National security.

Addressing a World Press Conference in Kaduna the Spokesperson of the for the Group, Abdulsalam Mohammed Kazeem, declared that “National security is a serious issue, we can’t afford a relapse of insecurity in this country because of mindless distractions.

“Unraveling the role the CBN under Emefiele is playing in sponsoring terrorism will put paid to the endless and mindless killings and attacks all over the country.

“As patriots, who wish to always stand on the path of righteousness, we won’t take sides with those calling for the sack of the DSS boss but rather ask that he should be allowed to carry out his duties without interference by anybody especially, when it comes to the issue of national security and the general well being of Nigerians.

“Those asking the DG to give details of Emefiele’s underhand dealings should know that security is a tactical issue and evidence can’t be made public so that criminals won’t be alerted and made to destroy evidence.

”Mr Godwin Emefiele, should as a matter of urgency, be relieved of his duties as the Governor of the apex bank (CBN), as his character and integrity is already questioned.

“He should be investigated accordingly and with immediate effect. His involvement into partisan politics and the spurious investments he has made even in some Nigerian banks make him unfit to continue as CBN Governor as this contravenes the CBN Act and other extant laws.

“He should be made to face the charges leveled against him in a competent court of law.

“The allegations by Hon. Mohammed Gudaji Kazaure concerning the misappropriation and diversion of stamp duty funds as well as other financial crimes require in depth investigation.

“Financial crimes including diversion of public funds as alleged run afoul of President Buhari’s anti-corruption posture and must not be tolerated by his appointee no matter how highly placed.

“Emefiele can’t be sitting as a CBN Governor while these investigation continue. He needs to step aside to prevent any form of interference and undue influence.

“It is our position that the CBN Governor should turn himself in to the DSS for questioning, possible arrest and detention. Failure to do so should be met by a forceful arrest and detention in one of Nigeria’s maximum security prison facility.

“He should forthwith, stop sponsoring faceless goons against the person of the DG of DSS and the Service in general. The endless media wars and attacks can only elongate his doomsday, but will definitely not save from standing trial and answering to the weighty allegations against him.

“We want to call on the DG to ignore the enemies of Nigeria and focus on the duties given to him by the constitution and President Mohammadu Buhari.”

Ademola Adeleke

Tawa Williams, the project manager in the middle of the failed multi – million dollar water project in Osun State has alleged that members of the state house of assembly demanded a $5 million bribe from her.

Following his swearing in as the state Govenor, Ademola Adeleke suspended the project on the basis that nothing was on ground to show for the humungous amount paid for the project by his predecessor, Gboyega Oyetola ‘s governmnet.

Governor Adeleke also suspended Williams as the project co-ordinator for alleged shoddy handling of the $106million dollar loan for the Ilesa Water project, ordering her to return also the bullet proof car she received from the immediate past administration.

The state government, in a statement, said no progress on the project despite reported disbursement of N10billion and another $28million to the contractor.

Responding to the allegation on Thursday, William who spoke on a private television in the state disclosed that the assembly demanded the bribe from her through Nasiru Olateju, House Committtee Chairman on Water Resources.

the House Committee Chairman on Water Resources, Nasiru Olateju, demanded the $5million bribe on behalf of the Osun Assembly.

According to he, “The House is asking for five million dollars and I said I don’t have five million dollars to give to anybody. They asked for it for themselves. They are asking for a takeaway grant and they are saying that they will go to the press and say that the quality of work that we have done is not good.

“I told them that one year ago, you were on the site. You were commending us. Now, you will go back to the press and say we have not done well, what would be your reason?

“Yes. They demanded the bribe. I am saying it with all sense of responsibility. It did not come to the House as a whole. The Chairman of the House Committee on Water Supply and members of his committee called us to the meeting. They were saying that we didn’t give them money, and I was saying we do not have money to give to them. The money I have is to do the job.”

The assembly has denied the allegation.

Group Calls For Urgent Action To Address Insecurity In South East

0
Elder Dr Uma Eleazu

A non-partisan organisation with the interest of the Igbo at heart, Anya-Ndi-Igbo, has called on the federal and state governments to address insecurity in the South East as it has become unbearable.

The group, which is committed to peace, security and development of  Igboland and to peaceful co-existence between Ndi-Igbo and other nationalities, made this call  in a statement  issued on December 27 and signed by the Chairman of its Board Of Trustees, Elder Dr Uma Eleazu; Trustee, Prof Ihechukwu Madubuike; President, Engr Chris Okoye; Deputy President, Abraham Nwankwo; Secretary, Sir Okey Nwadinobi; Chairman, Security Committee, Major General Nick Rogers; Representative of Women Groups, Nnedinso Ogaziechi; and Chairman, Media and Strategic Communications, Ikechukwu Amaechi.

The statement reads:

“Generally, Nigerians from all works of life are facing the biggest threat to their lives and livelihoods. The framers of our Nigerian Constitution starting from the 1999 constitution to the last amendment, foresaw today. This explains their provision of the primary duty of government as protection of lives and property. It is, therefore, the inalienable right and entitlement of every Nigerian to benefit from the primary duty of government to protect lives and property.

“In recent years and particularly in the past three years, the scale and depth of insecurity in the South East have become unbearable. Terrorist-type invasions accompanied by massacre and sacking of entire communities, which are hardly countered by Federal and States Governments have become a common feature of the region. Other types of merchants of crime, violence and torture have joined the rampage, thereby creating hell on earth for residents and travellers in the region.

“ANYA-NDI-IGBO condemns the havoc being wrecked on Ndi-Igbo by the existence of non-state actors in the South East, under different guises, acronyms and for other reasons. Only organizations that exist by relevant laws and Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria should engage in law enforcement. The objective is to make Ala-Igbo safe, not only for Ndigbo, but also attractive for people from other parts of the country to choose to live in.

“ANYA-NDI-IGBO advises South East Governors to go the extra mile in addressing security challenges and make security the topmost priority of their administration in order to reverse the current ugly trend. They should use all legitimate powers to stabilise and secure their States from further descent into chaos and work with federal authorities to restore normalcy.

“We encourage the Federal Government to open their doors for engagement and dialogue with all Agitation Groups as a way of understanding what the issues are and to resolve the genuine cases.

“We request the Federal Government to put all relevant measures in place to ensure that there is peace and Nigerians are protected as they come out to vote in 2023. All hands must be on deck to ensure that the right things are done. We appeal to the Commanders of the armed forces to collaborate with other State actors to work in synergy to maintain law and order. An insecure nation is a threat to all. It affects our general well-being and scares away our financially strong diaspora community as well as genuine investors.

“It is in line with this understanding that Anya-Ndi-Igbo, a non-partisan organization, committed to peace, security and development of Ala-Igbo and to peaceful co-existence between Ndi-Igbo and other nationalities, makes the following statements:

“a. We urge all communities in collaboration with the State Governments and The Nigeria Police Force to revive and strengthen their customary methods of protecting their communities to safeguard themselves on a continuing basis.

We request the Association of Igbo Town Unions (ASITU) to coordinate the implementation in the spirit of their continued selfless contribution to the welfare of Ala-Igbo. We plead with our revered Ecclesiastical Fathers and Traditional Authorities to bless and support these efforts.

“b. Meanwhile, the five Governors of the South East States are respectfully reminded that they cannot abandon their responsibility by allowing this anarchy and festival of blood to continue. They are expected to use their constitutional powers to do the needful, as the Governments of Benue, Rivers and South Western States have done to arrest insecurity in their respective territories.

“c. Governors in the South East should use their membership of the Nigeria Police Council to demand changes to increase the operational efficiency of the Police. A situation where the Commissioner of Police in a State can be posted out, without the input of the State Governor, the State Attorney General and State Ministry of Justice is unacceptable.

“d. South East State governments should enlarge their Ministries of Justice by adding Internal Security to their mandate. The Internal Security desk would cooperate with the police and other security agencies to agree on approaches to solving the security problems in the region.

“e. Coroners should be appointed and properly equipped in every Magisterial District in the South East. The Coroners should take up all cases of unlawful killings, especially those ‘unknown’ persons killed by security forces. All sudden deaths must be fully accounted for by the Coroner. Coroners’ inquests, properly conducted, will increase justice system visibility and transparency, thereby winning public confidence.

“With goodwill towards all and ill will towards none, Anya-Ndi-Igbo calls on all the sons and daughters of Alaigbo to think about creative and constructive ways of reversing the prevailing security, economic and political challenges in Alaigbo as a solemn duty. It is not time for ambivalence or complicit silence. We will succeed once we resolve to rise to the challenges before us. This current generation must also rise up and face the current challenges and effectively defeat them and triumph or fail and go down in infamy as a generation that lost its ancestral heritage. God forbid!”

Osun Students Move To Stop Election Of ‘Unqualifed Person’ As President

NAOSS Election

By Ayodele Oni

Sharp division occasioned by move to install an unqualified person as President of the National Association of Osun State Students (NAOSS) has stalled the election.

Some members of the association on Friday staged protest over the eligibility of some of the candidates aspiring for one office.

It was gathered that the apex students association in Osun State is due to conduct election to elect new leadership on Friday at the NUJ press centre, Osogbo, Osun state capital.

Some students, who had earlier petitioned the Electoral Committee members, staged a protest  to challenge eligiblity of an aspirant, identified as Kazeem Adeoye, who is contesting for president.

Adeoye is said to be a 200 Level student of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, Ondo State. While constitution mandates presidential aspirant to be a 300L student.

The petition partly reads,  “the provision of Article 5, section 28, sub -section (b) of the NAOSS Association, says a contestant vying for the post of President or speaker of the association, without any form of exception, MUST be a 300L student in a recognized Nigerian University or an HND 1 student of a recognized Nigerian Polytechnic.”

The aggrieved students, during the protest gathered at the entrance of the venue, mobilized themselves to boycott the Election if justice is not prevailed.

They carried placards of various inscriptions such as “Say no to Ineligible candidate”, “No Osogbo presidency no Election”, we lack confidence in NAOSSIEC SAY NO TO KANGOROO ELECTION, Osogbo says no to injustice” and others.

Addressing the press thereafter, Adeyemo Abdullah, also known as Triple A, a student at the Department of Office Information Management at the Lead City University, Ibadan, explained that

the students have gathered for the presidential election of the NAOSS, National Association of Osun Students. As an Osogbo indigene, their objective is to vote peacefully.

He said from their observations of the selected candidates, one of them is ineligible to run for president or speaker, according to the NAOSS constitution article 5 section 8 subsection A and B, which states clearly that “the eligible candidates who aspire to go for the post of president or speaker must be 300level students or HND 1.”

According to him, one of the contestants vying for the position of the President of the association, Adeoye Kazeem, from Iperin area Idi-Agbon Ila-Orangun is a 200L student of Adekunle Ajasin Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Ondo state.

The Electoral Committee Chairman, simply identified with his nick as Lugard, was conspicuously absent at the venue of the election and he neither picked his calls nor responded to text message requesting clarification on the eligiblity of Adeoye.

CBN: Embattled Emefiele Gets Reprieve From DSS Arrest

0
Godwin Emefiele

Embattled Godwin Emefiele, Central Bank of Nigerian Governor cannot be arrested by the Department of State Services, DSS. At least for now.

The reprieve for the apex bank governor came from an Abuja High court, few days after the DSS made a secret move to arrest him. The magazine reported a secret suit filed by the DSS to arrest Emefiele, which was turned down by the court.

The DSS had accused the CBN governor of economic sabotage and terrorism financing, and plotted to arrest him after his return from a trip with President Muhammadu Buhari.

But the High court in the nation’s capital has now barred the DSS, the Nigerian Police Force, NPF, from arresting and detaining Emefiele.

Justice MA Hassan who gave the order also restrained the Attorney-General of the Federation AGF, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, who are listed as defendants in the suit, from arresting the CBN Governor.

Justice Hassan ruled that the DSS “their agents, servants, privies and all officers under their control and command are hereby restrained from instigating the arrest or arresting, interrogating and detaining the Central Bank Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele, in respect of any matter or policy decision on the economy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria or for any connected purposes except by an order of a Superior Court.”
The judge made the order while delivering judgment in a suit marked GAR/CV/41/2022, filed by the Incorporated Trustees of Forum for Accountability and Good Leadership.

In the suit, tendered on 19 December, the applicant among other reliefs prayed to the Court for the following:

A declaration that the continuous harassment, intimidation, threats, restriction of free movement, abuse of the right of Office, surreptitious moves to arrest, and humiliation of Mr Godwin Emefiele, the Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria over trumped-up allegations of terrorism financing and fraudulent practices, etc by the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Respondents and their officers are vindictive, unwarranted, abrasive, oppressive and same constitute a flagrant breach of his rights to personal liberty, the dignity of the human rights; right to policy-making powers freedom of thought, conscience and religion and movement as respectively provided and enshrined under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as Amended) and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (Ratification and Enforcement) Act AND, therefore, unconstitutional and illegal.

The court also granted an order of substituted service on the 5th defendant/respondent the CBN by delivering the originating summons and other processes to the legal department of the bank, at its Headquarters in Abuja.

On December 7, the DSS tried to arrest the CBN governor by filing a suit at a federal high court. However, the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice J.T Tsoho, who ruled on the matter declining to grant the application for the governor’s arrest two days later.

He said the DSS did not show sufficient evidence to him to grant the exparte motion seeking to arrest Emefiele.

Bishop Kukah Collects “Tithes” From President Buhari – Adesina

0

By Femi Adesina

“Bishop Kukah seeks to posture as a friend of the President whenever he visits  the Presidential Villa. And that justifies his jocular visits to Daura to collect “tithes” after the President retires.

Under the camouflage of ‘speaking truth to power,’ it has become a regular thing for the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Matthew Hassan Kukah, to take potshots at President Muhammadu Buhari, and the governing All Progressives Congress (APC).When I saw the media reportage of his Christmas homily for 2022, I observed that it was in two distinct directions. The larger percentage took it from the negative: ‘Kukah blasts Buhari again; accuses him of failure to fight corruption, nepotism, and making Nigeria vulnerable.’

And there was the other perspective, which was positive but less popular and commonplace: ‘Kukah commends Buhari on infrastructural development.’ It emanated from the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

On reading the varying reports, I went searching for the full text of the homily, which I fortunately got online. I read it. Not as bilious and hateful as previous ones, but only laced with some inexactitude, which should be corrected for the sake of posterity.

This piece is, therefore, not an excoriation or flagellation of Kukah, but just a setting straight of the records. Kukah the cook came with a meal that didn’t quite satisfy the palate. Too little or too much salt? Too little or too much pepper? Over-spiced or under-spiced? Overdone or underdone? But something was not quite right with the cooking, and that was responsible for the negative media reportage.

Recall that the Bishop was particularly acerbic and virulent in his Christmas homily last year. And those of us that speak for the President did not suffer the poor cook gladly. My colleague, Mallam Garba Shehu and myself, as laymen, did the needful, and pointed out the holes in the homily. The Bishop went on a shooting spree, opening fire at us on TV and newspapers. He even challenged us to duels, employing language which I said an altar boy should not use, not to talk of a 70-year-old Bishop. But we had had our say, so we ignored him after the first fusillades.

This year’s homily, on reading the full text, was less toxic. But this was the portion the media feasted on. Speaking directly to President Buhari, the cleric said:

“It is sad that despite your lofty promises, you are leaving us far more vulnerable than when you came, that the corruption we thought would be fought has become a leviathan and sadly, a consequence of a government marked by nepotism. In my Christmas Message last year, I pointed out the fact that you had breached the Constitution by your failure to honour and adhere to the federal character provisions of our Constitution. The evidence is all before us all.

“I want to commend you, however, for the efforts you have made in the area of infrastructure. There has been a measurable improvement in the landscape especially in the area of roads. I commend you for the efforts and honesty of seeking to end malfeasance in the electoral processes and your courageous support for the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC. Am I to believe that you knew and could do nothing about the Muslim-Muslim ticket within your Party? Still, we pray for a free, fair and credible election. Since this is your last dance, I do wish you a merry Christmas. Next year, as your Bishop, I will endeavour to visit you in Daura to catch up on outstanding Tithes and other duties you owe your  Diocese.”

“To all the Members of the political class, a happy Christmas. You are seeking power at a time that the nation is in severe distress. You must demonstrate that you grasp the length and breathe (sic) of the problems that our country faces…”

Let’s look at the allegations. “You are leaving us far more vulnerable than when you came.” How? In what way? Where was the Bishop in 2015, when the polity had been completely shot to ribbons, and you couldn’t exactly say this was where Nigeria stood? Was there even a Nigeria, with insurgents running riot across the length and breadth of the country, bombing the land to kingdom come? The Bishop forgets, or is too filled with amnesia to remember. If Nigeria was vulnerable to death, destruction, destabilization, it was the situation before Buhari came, more than now. To a great deal, he has stabilized the land, crushed vermin, and is cleaning the polity. The job is not fully done, but is being done. Daily.

Bishop Kukah has been accused many times of being a political priest, with propensity for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), and great antipathy for the APC. That was possibly the prism from which he saw things, and, therefore, his erroneous conclusion of “more vulnerable.”

Again, he alleged that corruption was not fought, and had become a leviathan. Yes, when corruption creeps under the robes and cassocks of even priests, they would never see it being fought. Just a fortnight ago, Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Abdulrasheed Bawa, was guest at the weekly State House press briefing. Facts he unveiled were enough to show the yeoman’s work being done. But people like Bishop Kukah listen only to themselves, and have no time for alternative reality. So, when the monster is being assailed and being badly wounded, all they still see is the leviathan.

And by the way, if corruption is rife in a country, is it necessarily just the fault of a President? No. It is the fault of everyone, including the people, the institutions, the family, religious leaders, political leaders, everyone. If the Bishop was succeeding in his duty as a priest, then his adherents should be less prone to corruption, and the leviathan should have been slain, or badly wounded. So, if corruption is still the monster the Bishop claims it is, then he, too, is failing as a moral authority and guide.

Another allegation. Nepotism, which the priest did not justify. But he spoke of Federal Character, and I challenge him to bring instances of breach. The mistake he makes is to think that all appointments in the land are subject to that constitutional provision. No. There are positions that must be filled according to the principles of balance and equity, and those that are subject to presidential prerogatives. President Buhari is a scrupulous one when it comes to obeying the Constitution, and the allegation of nepotism is always a rife one in the country. It has trailed every President, and it will most likely always be there. But we expect our priests to be more informed, particularly the highly educated ones. However, some people never see good in other segments of the country, particularly the much vilified Fulani. Pity.

Bishop Kukah seeks to posture as a friend of the President, whenever he visits the Presidential Villa. And that justifies his jocular future visits to Daura, to collect ‘tithes,’ after the President retires. Well, President Buhari has no enemy. As I wrote recently, he has no malicious bone in his body, and will always cheerfully welcome Kukah.

But then, we know those who are working for the good of the country, and those who are sowing hate and discord. As William Shakespeare wrote, “Deep malice makes too deep incision.” That was why Fela Anikulapo-Kuti sang; Teacher, don’t teach me nonsense.

And we also ask the cook not to cook us nonsense.

Football Legend, Pele Dies Few Days After Bidding Family Farewell; Football Family Mourns

0
Pele

By Akinwale Kasali

Football great, Edson Arantes Dos Nascimento popularly known as Pele, has succumbed to the cold hands of death. He had a long battle with colon and prostrate cancer, which spread to his kidney.

The 82-year old soccer icon, had a couple of days ago bid his family members farewell.

He was bedridden before the commencement of the 2022 FIFA World Cup hosted by Qatar.

He had been treated for colon cancer, following surgery to remove a tumour in September 2021, and had required regular medical treatment.

After being admitted back into the hospital at the end of November to re-evaluate his cancer treatment, he was diagnosed with a respiratory infection before subsequently being moved to palliative care when his body became unresponsive to chemotherapy. He was on  stage four.

The three time World Cup winner -1958,1962,1970- passed away on Thursday at the Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo. His daughter, Kely Nascimento, confirmed the news on Instagram, writing: “Everything we are is thanks to you. We love you infinitely. Rest in peace.”

Pele made his international debut at the age of 16 and announced himself to a global audience in 1958, when, still only 17, he scored six goals in four games as Brazil won the World Cup for the first time. He scored twice in a 5-2 final win over Sweden in Stockholm.

His 1970 teammate Tostao remarked: “Pele was the greatest – he was simply flawless. And off the pitch, he is always smiling and upbeat. You never see him bad-tempered. He loves being Pele.” Sir Bobby Charlton, part of the England side beaten 1-0 in the group stage of that tournament by Brazil, remarked later in life: “I sometimes feel as though football was invented for this magical player.”

Pele scored 757 goals in 831 games during a glittering career from 1957 to 1977, although his long-time club Santos claim his tally was closer to 1,000.
