Obasanjo Unfit To Recommend A Presidential Candidate To Nigerians -Tinubu

0

By Akinwale Kasali

Four months after he led a high profile delegation of the All Progressives Congress, APC  to Abeokuta to seek the support of former President  Olusegun Obasanjo for his Presidential ambition, Bola Tinubu, Presidential Candidate of the Party has dismissed Obasanjo as unfit to recommend a President to Nigerians.

Tinubu, who had been very expectant of Obasanjo’s endorsement of him, was shocked when in an open letter to Nigerians, and especially, the Youths, Obasanjo endorsed the Candidate of the Labour Party, LP, Peter Obi, as his choice Candidate. The former President went on to ask Nigerians to vote for Obi, and charged the Youths to take back their Country.

But Tinubu, just like the APC Presidential Campaign Council, has slammed Obasanjo as a failure, and his endorsement of Obi as nothing because of what he said were Obasanjo’s failures when he was in the saddle as a democratically elected President.

Tinubu said these on Thursday at the APC Presidential Campaign rally held at the University of Benin Sports Complex, Ugbowo Campus, Benin.

The former Lagos State Governor said Obasanjo failed to develop the country when he had the opportunity, but was rather fighting his then Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, while accusing each other of spending the country’s money for their personal comfort.

Tinubu noted that after spending $16billion on electricity, Obasanjo and the PDP Government could not deliver electricity for Nigerians to make even popcorn.

Tinubu recalled how he brought Enron Power to generate electricity and solve the power problem in the commercial nerve centre of the country but the project was frustrated by the Obasanjo-led PDP Government.

“I brought Enron to solve electricity problem and help Lagos economy but Obasanjo and PDP frustrated it. They punished me and Lagos people and even began deducting our money.

“I created Local Governments in Lagos to accelerate development and create employment for our people but Obasanjo siezed our allocation and punished us for that. That was wickedness and such a man said he endorsed a man for you to vote as President. Can you follow such a man? Can Obasanjo recommend a leader for anyone in Nigeria? A man who does not know the way cannot show the way.”

On one of his opponents, Atiku Abubakar, the former Governor of Lagos said the PDP Presidential Candidate is not qualified to be President of Nigeria having indicted himself on his record as a civil servant.

“Atiku and Obasanjo accused themselves of using Nigeria’s money to buy cars for their comfort. Atiku was a Custom Officer who said he made money selling cars, that is smugling. He didn’t even know that a Civil Servant can not do any other business apart from agriculture. That is enough to disqualify him, and he is not fit to be President.”

On his plan for the economy and Edo people, Tinubu said it is time to eliminate darkness and make the economy of the country productive through massive industrialisation, promising to make Edo State a hub of industrial activities and an energy state.

At the rally, Tinubu told the people that prosperity and happiness have come. He applauded the return of Benin artefacts by some Western nations but urged the countries to pay some money to Edo State having made huge money from the returned artefacts through tourism and exhibitions.

“Edo people, prosperity has come, happiness has come, hope is back in your homes, knowledge is back in your community. I am happy about the returned artefacts. They are bringing our artefacts. I support the Oba of Benin who said our heritage must come back but I disagree with the Europeans. They have used our artefacts for exhibitions and tourism for decades in their museums to make money. They should not just send them back without money. When I become President I will ask them to pay us restitution. I will contribute to the building of the Museum in Benin.”

On his competence and readiness for the job, Tinubu told the crowd that his administration would focus on job creation through small scale industries, build a credible credit system for capital formation, bring multi billion-Dollar investments to Edo State and end estimated electricity billing.

“I will turn Edo State to energy State. I will convert Yahoo boys and make them useful by converting their talents and intellects to produce chips for industries. We can defeat poverty, ignorance and homelessness. We have the knowledge, we have the brain to do it. Trust me. I am an expert in finding the way where there is no way. I found a way to tame the Atlantic and turn it to money- making machine.”

Tinubu also spoke on his motivation to make life better for the poor and why opportunities must be created for young people to move up on socio-economic ladder.

“I believe the children of boli and groundnut sellers should become doctors, engineers, nurses etc. That was why I started the payment of WAEC fees for their children as Governor in Lagos. If you want to become rich, elect me. If you say I should go and retire, it means you want to retire diamond and gold. Edo people, I am telling you like I say everywhere in Nigeria, elect me.”

In his address at the rally, former governor of Edo State and Deputy Director- General of the Tinubu-Shettima Campaign, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, said come February 25, Edo people would use their PVC to appreciate Tinubu as a father of multi-party democracy in Nigeria.

“If you want to understand why Obasanjo failed to turn Nigeria into a one-party state, it was the resistance of Asíwájú and others.

“Obasanjo also wanted to take over Lagos. Asíwájú said you can’t do it. If you are a Military General, I am a general of politics. He fought him to a standstill,” Oshiomhole said.

He charged the crowd to mobilize their relatives and friends back home to vote for the APC candidate.

Oshiomhole also threw jibes at Presidential candidates of Labour Party, Peter Obi, and that of PDP, Atiku Abubakar, asking Edo people to reject them.

“Peter Obi is a joke,” he said, adding that Obi could not address the erosion problem in his state of Anambra.

Oshiomhole said Atiku cannot unite this country. “Someone who cannot unite his house, how can he unite Nigeria?”

Edo State APC Chairman, Col David Imuse (rtd), said Edo had always been with Asiwaju Tinubu and would always be there for him to ensure victory in the February 25 election.

“There is no political party that has a candidate that is as qualified as our candidate, in terms of experience, in terms of pedigree and performance.”

Kano State Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, APC National Woman Leader  Beta Edu, former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Godswill Akpabio; Minister of State for Budget and National Planning, Clem Agba, former Chief of Defence Staff, General Olanisakin, Senator Andy Uba, among others, attended the rally.

For the records, in 2015, Tinubu, also, led a delegation of the APC, including then Candidate General Muhammadu Buhari,  to the Abeokuta home of Obasanjo. They went to seek his blessings and support which he freely gave them. He campaigned for Buhari and was one of those who contributed very much to his victory in 2015.

Imo Leaders To Uzodinma:  Seek Re-election; “I Have Kept Faith With My Vows” –  Governor

0
Hope Uzodimma with Imo Leaders

The crème de la crème in Imo State on Thursday urged Governor Hope Uzodinma to seek re-election in the light of the good work he is doing in the State which they said is unprecedented within three years of assuming office.

The Leaders, from different spheres of human endeavour across the three geopolitical zones that make up Imo State took the position at the Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu Square, New Owerri, during the 7th Edition of Imo Stakeholders’ Forum chaired by Banking Guru, Dr. Pascal Dozie.

The Leaders who spoke after listening to Governor Uzodinma deliver his speech with the theme: Accountability in Governance,  not only adopted him to continue being their Governor due to his people-oriented programmes and sense of dedication to duty, but moved a motion urging the Governor to seek re-election.

Dr. Dozie had earlier told the Leaders to reflect deeply before making their contributions over the content of the Governor’s stewardship, which he also acknowledged were meant to serve the Imo people well. He noted, particularly, that by budgeting more funds for infrastructure, Governor Uzodinma has not left any one in doubt that he was out to serve the people.

He cautioned that the responsibility of making Imo State great was not the duty of the Governor alone, but also that of the stakeholders and the entire Imo people. He said: “In the wisdom of Governor Uzodinma, it was an honour to be invited to be  part of the decision making of the State.”

The first Leader to make a remark was the Founder and former Chairman of Seplat Petroleum, Dr. Ambrose Orjiakor, who said that Governor Uzodinma has demonstrated in so many ways that he has the interest of the people of Imo State at heart.

Like Dr. Dozie, Orjiakor said it is from the budgetary allocation of a State that one can assess the Government, noting that Governor Uzodinma has shown capacity within the short period of being in office, that service to the people is possible.

Orjiakor also urged Imo people to support the Government and the Governor by creating a peaceful atmosphere.

The Traditional Ruler of Ihim autonomous community in Okigwe zone who is, also, the Chairman of the Board of Ben Uwajimogu College of Education, Eze Oliver Ohanweh said as an Accountant, he scored Governor Uzodinma excellent in all the sectors going by the circumstances under which he had operated and the level of decay that was Imo State before Uzodinma came on board.

Eze Ohanweh, however, told the audience that he would not want to wait for the Governor to remind the people that he has been exceptional in his service to Imo State, hence he was calling on him, on behalf of the Traditional Rulers, to get prepared to continue in office by seeking re-election.

It was entrepreneur and business mogul from Owerri zone, Chief Henry Njoku (Haritex), who, on behalf of the Business class, moved the motion that Governor Uzodinma be adopted for re-election.

Chief Njoku’s motion was immediately seconded by Ifeanyi Agwu from Okigwe zone and when the motion was subjected to popular view, was overwhelmingly supported and adopted.

But the highpoint of the approval given to Governor Uzodimma to seek re-election came from foremost businessman, politician and Elder Statesman, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, who told the audience that he was so happy to be part of the Forum.

His words: “I am very happy. I have never had a day as happy as this. This is the first time a Governor is telling us what he has done in such lucid manner.”

Turning to Governor Uzodimma Chief Iwuanyanwu said, “I am very proud to be your leader, and your father as you call me. Hope, you are God’s sent to the people of Imo State. You have done very well and you have my support anyday.”

Former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Maurice Iwu in his vote of thanks agreed with those who said Governor Uzodinma has done well.

He said that the Governor is not only humble in office but at all times, and has shown that accountability is the hallmark of service to the people.  Recalling that the first Civilian Governor of Imo State, late Sam Mbakwe did well in office, Iwu said, “but we have never had it so good as we have under Uzodinma.”

Iwu then turned to Uzodinma and added: “Be courageous. Run for second term in office. Nothing will happen to you.”

Earlier, Governor Uzodinma had taken the leaders on his journey that began January 15, 2020, highlighting the rot that was called Imo State, and how he was able to exhume the “dead body” from the grave and worked tirelessly to breathe life into her.

He said his only regret was that his dream of taking Imo State to an unprecedented level was the politically contrived insecurity that slowed him down because of the drain the situation had on the finances of the State.

He reiterated his appeal to those sponsoring insecurity in Imo State, letting blood, kidnapping people and creating fear in the indigenes using one form of criminality or the other, to have a rethink because “while politicians will come and go, Imo will remain.”

The Governor reiterated his earlier position not to put his hand in the public till because of selfish consideration, reminding Imo people that three years down the road, nobody can associate him with any scandal of corrupt enrichment, land grabbing et al.

He said, however, that he has no regret spending the scarce resources of Imo State for the good of the people.

Governor Uzodinma who noted that he has kept faith with his promises to Imo people, said his administration has made impact in virtually all sectors in about three years in office and thanked President Muhammadu Buhari for the love and support he has shown to Imo people.

He highlighted the works and road infrastructure, education, agriculture, civil service, judiciary, legislature, health, commerce and industry,  environment, mines and Solid minerals, tourism, culture and creative arts, women affairs,  transportation, revenue generation, human capital development and youth empowerment, information, security among others, as areas reasonable impact has been recorded by his government.

In laying before the people the details of his scorecard that lasted for more than two hours, Governor Uzodimma said he has not departed from the vows he took in 2020.

“If I have kept faith with my vows to serve you for the good of all, and if you have affirmed that indeed we have delivered on our promises and that the difference is clear, the question is, What Next? I think on this question, the ball is in your court.”

“My esteemed Ndi-Imo, I can rightly and proudly declare before you here and now that yes, we have made a difference in all sectors; the civil service, infrastructure, automation of fiscal processes, attraction of Federal presence, and in open , transparent,  credible and inclusive government,” Governor Uzodimma added.

Stakeholders from opposition parties like former Aviation minister, Dr. Kema Chikwe (PDP), Chief Charles Ahize (LP) among others graced the occasion.

“I Will Be Instrumental To Installing Next President” – Wike; Dismisses Amaechi As A Bad Son Without Shame

0
Nyesom Wike

By Charles Igbo

Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, on Wednesday, said he would be instrumental to installing President Muhammadu Buhari’s successor during the February 25 Presidential  Election. “Whoever I adopt as Candidate will win the election”, he boasted.

The Governor spoke when he flagged off the construction of the Akpabu-Egbeda-Omoku Link road.

Wike who sounded sure-footed, without a care in the world, closed the gate to a possible reconciliation with the candidate of his Party,  Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Atiku Abubakar.

He said the insults being hurled at him by a number of people, neither touch nor disturb him as he would never change his mind over the non- backing of Atiku.

Those insulting him, Wike noted, will never mobilize enough votes to give their candidate 25 votes from the State.

He laughed at them, and said while they are busy going to Radio Stations and Television Houses, he is busy at home campaigning and mobilising voters for all PDP candidates, except, of  course, the Presidential candidate. He appealed to the cheering crowd to vote PDP all the way, except to the Presidential office. “I will not join issues with them.”, he said, because he is busy mobilising voters. “I will not lose focus.”

Wike: “If anybody likes, say what you want to say that I am working for so and so person. It’s their business. Say I am not working for so and so candidate. It is their business.

“That will not make me change my mind where we are heading to. Do you understand me? So, if they like, they can make speculation. After all, that is why the word, speculation, is there.

“Some of them who do not have 25 votes are busy abusing leaders. When you finish abusing leaders, you will pay.”

“We are here talking to our people, they are there in Radio stations and Television houses. We are here talking to our people. When you are finished, by that time, it’ll be too late.

“Be bold to ask such politicians when they come, what did you bring for us? You come with empty hand, you will go with empty hand. You come with project, we give you votes. You come with promises, we give you promises.”

Amaechi Has No Shame

The Governor dragged his predecessor in office, the immediate past Minister for Transportation, whose maternal home is the place he went to flag off the road project, Chibuike Amaechi.

As a Governor, Wike said, Amaechi did not deem it fit to construct the road. He said Amaechi did not find it necessary, and left his maternal home empty-handed. Wike described Amaechi as a bad child who has no shame, and said that he, Wike, has “now become your son.”

Wike: “You see, your mother  is from here. You didn’t deem it fit or necessary to do anything for your maternal home.

“Now, we that our mother is not from here, we are doing something to help your maternal home. You say it is unnecessary, it is a waste of resources.

“When you have a bad child, he is a bad child. If he is not a bad child, he should thank us for removing shame from his face. Since you don’t have shame, I will add more things for your  maternal home.

Aside from the road, Wike then added that he would reconstruct internal roads in Egbeda. He asked the contractors handling the projects to have no fear over their payments. “Go home and sleep with your two eyes closed. I will pay you. I have money. I will not start the projects if I have no money to pay.”

Wike and his allies who include four PDP Governors,  whose leader he is, has said they would not back Atiku’s Presidential aspiration.

Aside from their unhappiness over Wike’s failure to get either the Presidential or Vice Presidential ticket, they are, also, unhappy that the National Chairman of tye PDP, Dr Iyorchia Ayu, has refused to step down from office for a Southerner. Their argument: Both the National Chairman and the Presidential Candidate of the Party should not come from the same region – North.

They are, therefore, working for any candidate of their choice. The Governors with Wike are: Samuel Ortom, Benue, Okezie Ikpeazu, Abia,  Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, Enugu and Seyi Makinde, Oyo.

NUPENG Threatens Strike Amidst Ongoing Petrol Crisis

0

Nigerians have yet to overcome the current fuel crisis across the country, and another one is looming. This is because of the threat, on Thursday, by the Tanker Drivers Branch of National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (PTD- NUPENG), to proceed on a nationwide strike.

The tanker drivers while adressing journalists in Abuja, the nation’s capital on Thursday warned that they will embark on the strike if their members continued to be harassed by security agencies.

Lucky Osesua, the National chairman of the PTD-NUPENG, said harassment by soldiers attached to the Military Task Force operating in Port Harcourt, a Rivers states has become unbearable for his members.

He flayed the high-handedness of the Task Force who he accused of operating illegally, adding that the drivers are constantly harassed by th3 soldiers who falsely accuse them of transporting stolen crude oil. He, however, denied the involvement of his members in such nefarious activities.

The soldiers recently burnt two trucks conveying black oil belonging to his members after accusing them transporting stolen crude.

Osesua stated that the trucks which lifted the black oil at a modular refinery, Walter Smith Refinery and Petrochemical, Ibigwe, in Imo State, on Monday and Tuesday, were intercepted between Ahoada and Elele in Rivers State.

He gave the number plates of the trucks as EFR 770 XA and AFZ 351 ZY, noting that the petrol tankers were conveying 40,000 litres each of the black oil to Bob & Sea Depot Koko Delta State.

He said the drivers presented their documents to the military men who stopped them for checking, but that their trucks were later burnt by the soldiers on accusation that they were conveying stolen products.

The appeal made by the drivers that their documents were genuine, he said, failed to convince the soldiers, adding that the union could no longer bear the bad treatment his members constantly receive from the Task force.

Osesua said, “The drivers presented WayBills, NUPENG receipts, and quality control documents. But the military men still insisted that they carried crude oil.! They drove the the two trucks away and burnt them between Ahoada and Elele in Rivers State on Tuesday night.

“Without investigation, without reaching out to the refinery where the drivers mentioned that they lifted the black oil, the soldiers burnt the trucks in less than five hours.

“Enough is enough about the high-handedness of our security agents. They should stop demonising our Union and persecuting our men who are doing their normal business. We expect that in this modern world, trained security agents should be able to identify black oil as against crude oil. We should not be at the receiving end of their ignorance.”

The curent situation of fuel scarcity will get worse, watchers of what is going on in the country said if the union makes good of their threats to go on strike.

2023 Presidency: Afe Babalola Reveals Who Will Win

0

Legal luminary, Afe Babalola has disclosed that the presidential candidate with the biggest pocket will win next year’s presidential election. The Senior advocate of Nigeria, SAN, also stated that the present Nigerian constitution cannot produce the best leadership for the country.

His comment came amidst fears among not a few Nigerians, that the 2023 crucial election will be highly monetised. The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has insisted that efforts are already in place to reduce th3 influence of money during the election.

During the recent governorship elections in Osun and Ekiti states major political parties who participated in the election were believed to have induced voters with cash to get their votes.

Babalola who is among some prominent Nigerians who are calling for an interim government to replace President Muhammadu Buhari whose tenure expires next year, said Nigerians must begin to test the capacity or those they are chosing to rule them.

Speaking on Wednesday, the proprietor of Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti said the winner of the 2023 presidential election “is the person who has made money in this country. It is the person who has the money that will win.”

He condemned a situation where the current leadership has been recycling themselves in power since the country returned to democratic rule in 1999.

Babalola said, “It is not who can make a difference that will win the election, it is not the person who has all that it takes including age, health, education and patriotism that will win the election.

“The winner of the election, I can bet it, is the person who has made money in this country. It is the person who has the money that will win.

“A man who wants to rule the country has to be screened, and say what he will work out to do, a good manager, and what contribution to society.

“I still stand by my suggestion, if any election conducted under the present constitution cannot produce new leaders with new ideas, rather will merely result in recycling the same people who have brought Nigeria to grinding poverty,

“Experience is the best teacher, our bitter experience in 1999 thought that we are in need of a new constitution which provides for new conditions, which are respect for age, academic qualification, Character, personality and commitment to development at all levels of government as well as family background.

” These are things that must be screened about the new President.”

In April last year, the senior lawyer sued for the institution of an interim goverment to replace the outgoing administration, to usher in a new constitution noting that this is necessary to prevent Nigeria from slipping into a chaos,

OPINION: The Trouble with Obasanjo’s Wish

0
Azu Ishiekwene

By Azu Ishiekwene

I’m sure he expected the firestorm. As is his custom, he primed and released it to explode at his own time and season. If the letter by former President Olusegun Obasanjo endorsing Labour Party’s Peter Obi had gone unnoticed, uncriticised, and un-replied, then it would not have been Obasanjo’s letter.

The letter had barely landed when the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and, in fact, the Presidency all pounced, with the mildest of them all from the PDP.

Whatever the misgivings of the affected parties, I’m sure most might agree on the central message: that young people who constitute 65 percent of Nigeria’s population and, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), 76.5 percent of nine million newly registered voters, would play a significant role in the forthcoming general elections.

Those who were only eleven-years-old when President Muhammadu Buhari, who promised change, was voted in only to witness #Endsars six years later when the President was in the first year of his second term, are now of voting age. And those among them who are registered would be voting for the first time, if they have not joined the massive “japa wave” sweeping the country.

It evokes memories of the “Andrew checking-out” era of the 1980s. Yet, if you have seen the lines at any of the embassies in Lagos or Abuja lately – lines spilling onto the pavements and main roads from behind huge iron gates and turnstiles manned by hefty private embassy security men, set against desperate young faces teeming with frustration – then you will know that what we have on our hands today is worse than the Andrews of the 1980s.

It is Andrew plus the mini-exodus of the post-1993 annulled elections, only more gifted and determined than both combined. These are the ones Obasanjo hopes would pour the anger, rage and frustration of #Endsars and the current economic hardship into an electoral tide that would sweep away the old order.

The affected parties also know that Obasanjo’s target – the registered remnant not yet on the “japa wave”, that curious, largely agnostic, adventurous and irreverent block – might play an important role in this election.

In addition to being the country’s largest vote banks, three regions – the North-West, the South-West, and the South South – currently hold the largest concentration of this youth population. According to records from the National Population Commission (NPC), five states – Kano (3.4m); Lagos (2.7m); Oyo (1.7m); Kaduna (2.1m); and Rivers States (1.8m) – have the highest overall youth population between the ages of 20 and 34 among Nigeria’s top 10.

Another problem which Obasanjo identified correctly is the sheer scale, scope and complexity of the work required to retrieve Nigeria from the brink. With inflation at 23 percent; youth unemployment at 33 percent; foreign exchange scarcity; declining production and receipts from oil sales; and a looming debt crisis, even Obasanjo’s worst critics might agree that Buhari appears to have used up his successor’s honeymoon.

What then, is the problem with Obasanjo’s letter? Surely, he is entitled to his choice and opinion which, however weighty, have not always been consequential in all elections.

Apart from 1979, when his military government foisted Shehu Shagari on the country, MKO Abiola won in 1993; and Buhari in 2019, both in spite of him. And even when he was a candidate, he lost resoundingly in his own state and his South-West backyard in 1999, only to wrest swathes of the region in a do-or-die subterfuge four years later.

The hairsplitting this time is not so much over Obasanjo’s electoral value. What is left has been so depleted by his ego, his meddlesomeness and his lust for power that it is hardly enough to win him decisive votes in his Totoro/Soroki Ward 11, even if he were on the ballot today.

It does appear that what some folks are concerned about is not Obasanjo’s right of choice or advocacy, but what he might have done, early on, to make it much easier to pave the way for an Igbo presidency.

As president for eight years, Obasanjo vehemently rejected any suggestions to help restructure the country, which would have given the regions, especially the South-East, a fairer footing and created a more equitable and inclusive federal system.

An indispensable man, he wanted so much power for himself and spared no cost to acquire it, that Obasanjo invested at least $500 million in a phantom third term project, according to Chidi Odinkalu and Ayisha Osori in their book, Too Good to Die.

It’s a measure of the complexity of the animal called man, that PDP, the party where Obasanjo was alpha and omega for eight years, was – and apparently remains – unable to provide a pathway for Igbo presidency. APC, the Siamese of the PDP, has fared even worse. Ironically, it is the Labour Party, the child of political necessity whose roots and forebears Obasanjo sought to crush, that has produced the cornerstone of his newfound affection.

During his presidency, the South-East suffered significant infrastructural decline, while he raised a small privileged class from there to manage his conjugal realm or stir up one political crisis after another. Not once, not twice, but three times, he instigated the removal of Igbo Senate presidents (including Chuba Okadigbo) who had a mind of their own. Yet, they were lucky.

The chairman of the Onitsha branch of the NBA, Barnabas Igwe and his wife, were killed in what was suspected to have been politically motivated murders – a bloody record, which littered not just the South-East, but up and down the country, claiming in its trail Obasanjo’s supposed friend and the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Bola Ige. The killers are still at large.

If Obasanjo was less lustful of power, less controlling and less obsessed about becoming the only cock in the neighbourhood that must crow, the deadly ferment in Igboland today which is a product of decades of injustice might have been mitigated. Also, the region now locked in the politics of self-mutilation and fratricidal violence to air its grievances, might have had an easier pathway to power.

Obi, first tapped by Obasanjo as Atiku Abubakar’s running mate in 2019, once again deserves Obasanjo’s support and should get it. But what Obasanjo offers is not support; it is nearly five and a half decades of overdue, self-interested atonement disguised as patriotism; it is worse than a Greek gift

It’s a gift with a history. And the youth to whom he addressed his letter might do well to remember, too. It’s true as he said in his letter that he became military head of state at 39 and General Yakubu Gowon at 33. If you want to know how much Obasanjo loved the youth in his heyday, ask those who witnessed the “Ali-Must-Go” students’ protest in 1978.

That protest by students against increase in school fees at the time, remains one of the most violently repressed in student protest history, a foreshadow of #Endsars. But that was not all.

The year before Ali-Must-Go, “unknown soldiers” burnt down, well, a youth’s haven, Fela’s Kalakuta Republic, and beat residents with rifle butts and iron bars. Fela’s mother, Olufunmilayo, was dragged by the hair and thrown out the window. She survived the fall, but later died from its impact.

And for those too blind to see the repression committed in plain sight, Obasanjo’s military regime shipped some offshore, to an Island 100 km off the coast of Lagos, called Ita-Oko, where critics of the military regime were imprisoned. It was an utterly squalid place which, interestingly, Buhari did not only retain, but also expanded when he seized power in a military coup four years after Obasanjo handed over to a civilian government.

All of this hardly diminishes Obasanjo’s outstanding international record, his appetite for the limelight and, of course, his love of drama. Or indeed his right to suggest who he thinks is best to lead Nigeria. If the leading candidates didn’t think he still matters they would not be fawning over him and feeding his ego for support. They shouldn’t be throwing tantrums now. Obasanjo had them exactly where he wanted.

The young may be fooled, but not the older ones who have seen Obasanjo as a leader, in and out of uniform, on his farm, on the podium, and in his home. If Obi knows Obasanjo as I think he should, my unsolicited advice is that he should read the former president’s letter of endorsement to the end. Somewhere there, in small print, he would find the words: “Buyer Beware!”

This was contained in a statement in Abuja by Director of Public Relations of NSCDC, Mr Olusola Odumosu.

The statement reads “The attention of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has been drawn to an erroneously crafted message to applicants about the recently advertised NSCDC 2022 recruitment exercise circulating in the media, various social media platforms and WhatsApp groups.

“The message, in part, states that, ‘The Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB) wishes to inform the general public that the Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT) for recruitment into the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) will hold on the 8th of January, 2023 in the 36 States of the federation and FCT.’

“This is in order to extort unsuspecting applicants of their monies by causing panic and creating unnecessary tension with the said write up.

“Members of the public and desperate job seekers are hereby warned not to fall victims of Extortions and Job Scams through a grandiose attempt by job racketeers to misinform and confuse them into parting with different sums of money in the name of helping to shortlist them for the Aptitude Test and getting placement in NSCDC .

“NSCDC seizes this window to send a strong warning to those elements behind the fake news, that, the Corps’ cyber experts have been directed by the Commandant General, Dr Ahmed Abubakar Audi, mni, OFR, to go after the master minds of this Fake Information  and very soon they will be fished out.

Fraudsters are therefore warned to be ready to face the full wrath of the law if they dont desist from this criminal method of amassing wealth at the expense of desperate job seekers who are vulnerable and can easily fall prey due to their antics and their anxiety to get jobs.

“The public should be informed that the NSCDC recruitments, enlistment and promotion exercises are coordinated and supervised by the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire, Immigration Service Board (CDCFIB) under the Chairmanship of the Minister of Interior, Ogeni Rauf Aregbesola.

Nobody Should Play Politics With Death – Okorocha

Rochas Okorocha

By Adesina Soyooye

Former Governor of Imo State, Senator Rochas Okorocha, has warned that nobody should try to play politics with death. Okorocha said this when he dismissed the reports that he has defected from the All Progressives Congress, APC, to the Peoples Democratic Party, APC as fake.

The report, supported by a photograph where Okorocha was in a relaxed mood with another former Governor of the State, the Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, made the rounds on Wednesday.

Not a few people were, at once, taken aback and happy when the report broke. They were like, at last, we know which Party to identify Okorocha with.

The former Governor, a founding member of the APC, lost its structures which he tightly held to the incumbent Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodinma. The battle for the control of the structure raged to the Supreme Court.

And even though Okorocha’s Group won, victory came too late. Their tenure had expired. The Court judgement had no effect, and the Uzodinma Group held sway.

Since then, Okorocha has not been active in the Imo APC. It is like he does not exist. He seems to have been “run out of town”. His political status as from June 2023 when the 10th National Assembly will be inaugurated is uncertain. He is not going back to the Senate as much as he would have loved to. He did not try to aspire to the Senate during the Primary. He knew he was not going to get it, and so avoided a situation where he would have failed.

It does look like he has no stake in Imo politics in 2023. New Sheriffs have taken over.

When the news, therefore, broke that he had joined the PDP, a number of his loyalists were happy.

But the Senator says the story is fake. He says he is still a member of the APC. That there is nothing like his joining the PDP.

In a lengthy statement issued  on his behalf by his Media Adviser, Sam Onwuemeodo, Okorocha said the photograph, from which the fake story emanated was taken at the funeral ceremony of the mother of one of his key loyalists, Hon. Kingsley Uju.

Uju, who was, among other things, Okorocha’s Deputy Chief of Staff, decamped to the PDP from the APC when he was denied the ticket for a second term to the House of Representatives. He quickly picked the ticket of the Party.

At his mother’s funeral, both leaders of the PDP, and Okorocha’s loyalists were present. That explains the presence of Ihedioha and Okorocha. And that explains the photograph which is circulating as evidence that Okorocha had joined the PDP.

Following is the full text of the statement signed by Onwuemeodo. Nobody should play politics with death, he warns.

Senator Okorocha has not joined PDP, he is still in APC

“1. Our attention had been drawn to a story, claiming  that , the former governor of lmo state and Senator Representing lmo West senatorial,  Owelle Rochas Okorocha,   has joined the Peoples Democratic Party,  PDP.

“2. To add flesh  to the false story,  those behind it also attached  some photographs,  with Senator  Okorocha and a Chieftain of the PDP, Rt. Hon.   Emeka lhedioha and others, being  in the pictures .

“3. Those behind this false story,  deliberately  failed or refused to mention the venue and title of the event,  where the photographs were taken. They could not also quote a portion of Okorocha’s speech,   since he is not  a dumb man , and  must have made a speech at the event.

“4. They concealed or withheld  those  vital aspects  of every event or story, because they would not serve their aim or goal .

“5. We are at ease,   to say that,   Okorocha has not joined the PDP. He is still a  member of the APC. Burial ceremony could not have become political declaration rally.

“6.  On Friday,  December 30, 2022, Hon.Kingsley Uju,  representing Ohaji-Egbema/Oguta/Oru West Federal Constituency, buried the mother,  Lolo Caroline Uju,  at her Home town,  Egbema.

“7.  Uju was Okorocha’s frontrow appointee. He served Okorocha and his government in various capacities,  including being the Deputy Chief of staff and was  his anchor man in the oil producing areas of the State . Okorocha was also  instrumental to his going to the House of Representatives on the platform of APC. There’re  also a lot of them like that.

“8. Uju joined PDP when he discovered that  his second term bid ticket,  could not be guaranteed in APC. He succeeded in getting the PDP ticket. Okorocha would not have,  in the circumstance, asked him to drop his second term bid.

“9. Uju buried the mother on Friday,  December 30, 2022 . Okorocha was at the burial because Uju served him and his government with dedication and commitment. Okorocha would not have boycotted the burial because of Uju’s current political  party. That would have been  most uncharitable and unimaginable, especially when  lgbos do not play politics with death and burial, even when the reverse seems to be the case these days.

“10. At the burial too, were PDP members where Uju belongs today.  And lhedioha,  one of the key leaders of PDP in lmo,  was at the burial too, with his party chieftains.

“11. The burial in question created an atmosphere of conviviality ,  in which case ,  people mixed up and interacted freely without minding which political parties they belong.  Photographers  were taking their shots without anybody being conscious of any attendant mischief,  since the political leaders  were all there,  for Hon.  Uju  mother’s burial. lt was not  a political rally.  lt was also  somewhat a carnival because the late woman lived a fulfilled life,  with the children being handy .

“12. Unfortunately, those who play politics with everything,  both human and inhuman,  circulated some of the photographs taken at the burial  and told their audience that,  Okorocha had joined the PDP. Yet, they could not tell the same audience,  the venue of the  ” joining” and what the event was all about .

“13. The correct story is that,  Okorocha is still a member of the  Apc. And if he decides to leave APC today or tomorrow,   the world would know he is quiting. As protocol demands,  he would write to inform the leadership of the Senate. He would write to inform the leadership of the APC.  And we would take off from  there. That would not take place at a burial event. At a  burial ground.

“14 . This is new year.  So,  we  wouldn’t be hard on those behind this cock and bull story . We would only ask  God to touch them,  to know that politics isn’t the end of life. To know that, it’s ungodly and high level of wickedness  to play politics with death or burial. To know that,  one day ,  we shall be judged by our actions, inactions and utterances. lt doesn’t end here.

“15. To also  know that,  those who played politics in the first Republic and second republic , even third republic, are not the ones playing it today. That is to say,  later,  if not sooner,  those playing it today,  would become history. We must, therefore,   be mindful of the way we play our politics.

“16.  All in all,  we  appeal that, the general public should disregard the story of Okorocha joining the PDP.  lt’s not true. The photographs attached to the false story  are not evil since politics is not war .Not a do or die venture. Our  only concern was the virus some mischief makers tried to inject into  the innocent photographs,  taken at Uju mother’s burial,   without malice or those involved  being conscious of  which political parties all  those at the burial in question,  belong.

“17. May God grant those behind this falsehood , Spiritual transformation and moral rebirth or formatting. They need it, more than ever before. They need to be taught that mischief isn’t a good English word.”

In 2017, IPOB’s Nnamdi Kanu Shifted Ground From Secession To Restructuring

0

By Elliot Ugochukwu-Uko

First January, 2023, I am forced to break my self-imposed silence over the impasse in the land, after reading in the media a reference of the August 30, 2017 peace meeting between Nnamdi Kanu and the South East Governors.

Kanu’s family represented by his younger brother Emmanuel Kanu, as published by the Vanguard Newspaper, asked certain questions including the surprising silence of leaders and stakeholders in the land, over the outcome of the 2017 meeting.

I think it is auspicious to say something about the August 30, 2017 peace meeting in Enugu, since I facilitated the meeting by the grace of God. And since peace has remained elusive till date.

Dr Alex Ekwueme takes the credit for that noble effort five years ago, which gladly remains the only historical instance where Nnamdi ever agreed to shift his position from demanding outright secession, to agreeing to the restructuring of Nigeria and quieting the agitation for twelve months, on the condition that the country takes the restructuring of the country very seriously.

The former Vice President impressed upon Nnamdi the need to shift his position to restructuring, and level playing field for every section of the country.

Others who mounted pressure on Nnamdi to yield to restructuring included Archbishop Maxwell Anikwenwa, Dr Dozie Ikedife, Chief Mbazulike Amechi, Chief (Mrs) Maria Okwor, Prof Ben Nwabueze amongst others.

24 hours to the Enugu meeting, Nnamdi finally capitulated to the pressure from these elders and agreed to shift his demands to the restructuring of the country, but insisted that he would only mute the agitation for only twelve months to see if the authorities would seriously kick start the process to restructure the country, and that he would go back to the trenches if nothing is done towards the genuine and sincere reconstruction of the polity along the lines of true federalism and power devolution. He also insisted the country reverts to the 1963 constitution.

These were his demands and position at the August 30, 2017 meeting.

It is instructive to note that at the meeting, Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State, told Nnamdi that the people of his state were not exactly excited about going back to the old Eastern Region. Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi also maintained that Enugu people are not willing to revert to a situation that would cost them their state, but promised to present his demands to Abuja.

The meeting ended on a good note with Nnamdi promising to attend the follow-up meeting scheduled in a fortnight with his team according to the consensual agreement of all.

Finally, Nnamdi also agreed that his demands weren’t absolute, meaning, that his position was amenable to change as the dialogue progresses.

These were the contents of the August 30, 2017 meeting between Nnamdi and the South East Governors, which I had the privilege to facilitate.

I opened up after many years of silence because I believe that peace, resolution and closure can be achieved.

I pray Nnamdi will have the godly spirit and good mind to remain on his position delivered at the peace meeting with the South East Governors five years ago.

I hereby publicly call on Emma Kanu to plead with his brother that the August 30, 2017 position will lead faster to peace and resolution than any other position.

I am breaking my silence on this new year day because facts have proven that the situation only got worse within the past five years.

I hereby publicly call on Emma Kanu to plead with his brother that the August 30, 2017 position will lead faster to peace and resolution than any other position.

I am breaking my silence on this new year day because facts have proven that the situation only got worse within the past five years.

Whatever inspired the decision to attack Nnamdi Kanu’s residence on the eve of the scheduled follow up meeting a fortnight away, on September 14, 2017, hasn’t resolved the situation, ended the agitation nor brought peace to the land.

In fact, things have only gotten worse since then.

The quite avoidable and senseless violence eating up the land today is heartrending.

The paralysis of economic life in the region every Monday for a year and half now, is pathetic.

Those who refused to dialogue with the agitators since 1999 should kindly have a change in heart so the region can have peace.

My appeal is for all sides to look again at the August 30, 2017 meeting agreement in pursuit of peace, resolution and closure.

Peace and harmony should be the priority now.
