Wike: You Lied Against DSS – Supreme Court

0
Olukayode Ariwoola and Nyesom Wike

By Gideon Njoku

The Supreme Court has said  that reports were fabricated against the Department of State Security, DSS, over a story which concerns the Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, the Honourable Justice

Olukayode Ariwoola. It said that deliberate lies were told against the Service.

Reports were rife that the DSS had invited and interrogated the CJN over his visit to Rivers State where he was alleged to have made a partisan statement.

Ariwoola had gone to the State for the sole purpose of commissioning a judicial project carried out by the State Government.

However, the State Governor, Nyesom Wike, hosted him and members of his entourage to a banquet, where he invited members of the PDP G-5 whose leader he is.

The G-5, is made up of five PDP Governors opposed to the Leadership of the Party, as represented by National Chairman, Dr Iyorchia Ayu, and its Presidential Candidate, Atiku Abubakar. They have, since after the Presidential Primary, distanced themselves from the PDP and its activities, including the Presidential Campaign, unless Ayu steps down from office. Led by Wike, the other members are: Samuel Ortom, Benue, Okezie Ikpeazu, Abia, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, Enugu, and Seyi Makinde, Oyo. The CJN is from Oyo.

At the banquet, the CJN allegedly heaped praises on Wike and, allegedly too, expressed joy that his State Governor, Makinde, is a member of the G-5.

The alleged statements caused an uproar. The PDP, APC, groups and some individuals asked for the resignation from office of the CJN.

The Supreme Court, however, denied that the CJN made any such statement and alleged a plot to rubbish both the apex Court and the CJN.

But the denial did not stop the story that the DSS invited and interrogated the CJN over the statement attributed to him. It was also alleged that five Supreme Court Justices had asked the CJN to resign from office over the Rivers State incident.

But in a statement issued on Tuesday, and signed by its Director of Information and Press, Dr Festus Akande, the Supreme Court said the publication lied against the DSS and the five Supreme Court Justices whose names were not mentioned.

It said the DSS neither invited, nor interrogated the CJN, and that the story that five Justices had asked the CJN to resign over the samr issue is a lie from the pit of hell and, warned of consequences.

The statement reads in part:

“We have read with dismay and shock a publication with the above caption by an online media outfit, “People’s Gazette,” alleging that the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, was grilled by the DSS for the remarks he made in ‘Port Harcourt at a state banquet’ and that ‘five Justices of Supreme Court are calling for his resignation.’

“Just like our earlier press statement debunking this barefaced falsehood and mischievous antics aimed at scoring very cheap and unpopular political gains in this era of aggressive and mudslinging politicking.

“We wish to state in very clear and unmistaken terms, that this is yet another round of the avalanche of lies that have been disingenuously packaged by individuals with unenviable pedigree to malign the character and personality of not just the CJN but several other Judicial Officers that they considered to be too unpliable and principled to be approached for any form of underhand dealings, especially as election cases (petitions) will soon be streaming to the tribunals (courts) for adjudication.

“It has become very obvious that those with sinister motives have perfected plans to unleash all manner of coordinated attacks on Judicial Officers, starting from the CJN with a view to arm-twisting and blackmailing and ridiculing them to silence, ultimately for their ulterior motives.

“For sure, it will only take an undiscerning mind to believe this string of falsehood, misinformation and blackmail. Nigerians are much wiser to fall for this armchair criticism and disingenuous sponsorships of paid crowds who masquerade as ‘civil society organizations’ to help them further their inordinate ambition of gagging and fettering the Nigerian Judiciary so that they could cowardly do their biddings.

“The publication, which was laced with tissues of lies, non-existent sources of information and unsubstantiated claims, clearly showed the unwholesome intentions of the authors.

“For the record, no single Justice of the Supreme has asked the CJN to resign, and no Justice of the Supreme Court has or is writing any letter of protest whatsoever.

“This stream of falsehood, as usual, is flowing from the same discredited source that is hell-bent on destroying the Judiciary for some selfish interest.

“The Supreme Court Justices are united and firmly behind the CJN; and are, as usual, all working assiduously to dispense justice without fear or favour.

“Neither the CJN nor the Honourable Justices of the Supreme Court or other Courts for that matter, are politicians, so, none of them should be dragged into politics in any form whatsoever.

“Our advice to this set of rabble-rousers whose stock in trade is character assassination via dissemination of false information to create tension and disaffection, is to have a rethink and engage in meaningful productive activities that will move the nation forward. A word is enough for the wise.”

AGN Calls For Arrest Of Empress Njamah’s Lover Over N*wde Photographs

Empress Njamah

By Akinwale Kasali

The Actors Guild Of Nigeria, AGN, has condemned the release of n*wde videos of Nollywood Actress, Empress Njamah, by her estranged fiancé, George Wade.

The National President of the AGN, Ejezie Emeka Rolls, said it is disheartening that Wade stooped so low to blackmail Njamah who he always professed love to.

Wade, a Liberian created a WhatsApp group where he added multiple people and began posting nude videos he took of the actress in her house, including where she was taking her bath.

The duo separated in 2022. Njamah had accused her ‘ex-fiance’ of physically assaulting her, in a Livestream through her verified Instagram handle.

In a statement signed by the Director of Communications, Kate Henshaw, the AGN said: “We vehemently condemn the release of private videos of our member, Empress Njamah on social media.

“This act of blackmail calculated to smear the image and publicly ridicule her by a man who claimed to be her lover is not only criminal but also evil and unacceptable.

“It is worthy to note that exposing nude videos and photographs of a person that injure her right to privacy is a serious offence.

The Association further said it stands with Empress Njamah on this and shall provide full support in areas of counselling to help her recover from the psychological and emotional trauma she is currently passing through.

“We have been in forefront of a campaign of violence against women and we view the action of this so-called evil lover man as an act targeted at eroding her dignity and self-respect.

“We call on the law enforcement agents to apprehend the culprit and ensure he faces the full wrath of the law for violating the right and dignity of Empress Njamah.

“We urge her fans to give her their full support at this time. She will come through this stronger and better,” the statement added.

N44trn Debt: Senate President Says NASS Must Stop FG From Borrowing More

0

Ahmad Lawan, Nigeria’s Senate President has warned the next National Assembly not to approve further loans for the federal government. Lawan spoke amidst serious worries that the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari has borrowed too much.

The incremental rise in the nation total debt stock which now stands at over N44 trillion has largely been blamed on NASS described by not a few Nigerians to be too pliant to the administration. Critics of NASS said the lawmakers should have stopped the president from plunging the country into debt.

To underscore the dire situation, over N10 trillion has been borrowed by the government as budget deficit out of the N21 trillion Budget that has now been signed by President Buhari.

Recall that Lawan, who is the Chairman of NASS had at a time said the assembly under his watch would not reject any loan request from President Buhari.

But speaking on Thursday at an event in Abuja, the nation’s capital to mark his 64th birthday, the Senate President who has lost the quest to return to NASS urged lawmakers coming on board in the next dispensation to do everything on their part to stop further borrowing by the federal government.

Rather than borrowing, the outgoing Senate President said effort should be concentrated on generating more revenue, as well as plugging other revenue holes and stopping waste in government.

Lawan said, “For those of my colleagues who will be returning to the National Assembly, this should be a very important matter for the next Assembly to continue to deal with because we just cannot afford to continue borrowing.

“We should minimize it. I know it is not possible to eliminate it completely, but we should minimise it.

“The next Assembly should do that. I don’t know how, but definitely, from our experience of today and even before today, we can do better in getting more revenues for government to deploy for development.

“For some of our colleagues who are going to Government Houses, the issue is very clear.

“We need the Federal Government as well as the states to work more closely because whatever the Federal Government does, if there is no participation or support or complementarity from the states, it won’t work.”

He furher stated that: “One other challenge is the lack of sufficient revenues for government to undertake its numerous laudable and noble national development projects across the country.

“Most of what we do in terms of national development is to borrow funds for us to execute those projects.

“I think we have to work hard to improve our revenue generation and collection because it is not looking too sustainable that we tolerate people and some agencies of government, to misapply or not even declare the revenues they collect. We can’t continue with that.”

“For us in the Senate, we have decided that for the remaining part, we will continue to engage with our revenue-generating agencies until we get better outcomes from them. This is possible and has become imperative.

“Also, the concessions and waiver that the government has given, we need to review that. Now every kobo counts because we are in a very difficult situation.

“Where a waiver cannot be justified anymore because of our present circumstance, then, such waiver should be reversed or renegotiated.

“But definitely, we need to work hard to improve the revenue generation and collection by the MDAs and other government agencies,” the Senate President said.

2023: Obasanjo Denies Bribing INEC With N5bn To Rig Election For Obi

0
Olusegun Obasanjo and Peter Obi

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has debunked reports that he bribed the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to rig the 2023 pesidential election for the candidate of the Labour Party, LP, Peter Obi.

The former president is an ardent supporter of the LP candidate, and to show his strong support for him, recently wrote a letter calling on Nigrians, particularly youths to vote for Obi in the February 25,election.

In the endorsement letter, the former leader said the LP candidate is the best to rule the country among the frontline candidates which include Atiku Abubakar and Bola Tinubu of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and All ProgressivesCongress, APC.

Other reports have claimed that Obasanjo has colluded with INEC to ensure that Obi emerges the winner. He was said to have bribed the electoral umpire with a whopping N5 billion.

According to a statement by his media aide, Kehinde Akinyemi, the former president described the report as completely false.

He said he had only endorsed Obi in the letter he wrote to Nigerians, adding that any other report should not be ascribed to him.

The statement released on Thursday said, “The former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo is not responsible for the viral stories on some discredited platforms on the forthcoming general elections in Nigeria,” his spokesman, Kehinde Akinyemi, said in a statement issued yesterday.

“Also, apart from the letters dated January 1, 2023 respectively, one which was addressed to the Nigerian youths and the other to Prof. Toyin Falola on his 70th birthday, there has been no other public or private letter written to anybody by the former President.

“The reading public is for the umpteenth time reminded that only a statement duly signed by His Excellency, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo or by his Media Assistant, Kehinde Akinyemi are to be allowed into the media space.

“If need be, necessary checks can be made to confirm the authenticity of such documents before publication to avoid any embarrassment.”

Similarly,  the former president has disclosed  that he could have gotten a third term in office if he wanted.

Obasanjo’s has been tainted after the botched third term saga which he has variously denied.

Ohinoyi Replies Gov Bello, Says Not Officially Invited To Welcome President Buhari

0
Yahaya Bello and Dr Ado Ibrahim

By Ayodele Oni

The cold relationship between Ohinoyi of Ebiral Land, Alhaji Dr Ado Ibrahim and Governor Yahaya Bello in Kogi state continues as the royal father accused government of insensitivity to his life.

Ohinoyi’s daring word is coming on the heel of query issued to him by the state government for his absence at a reception for President Mohammadu Buhari during his visit to the state about two weeks ago.

On the day of the President’s visit, a case of an explosion was reported very near the monarch palace at Okenne, which claimed life.

Ohinoyi, in his reply to the query, insisted that there was no official letter informing him about the visit of President Muhammadu to Kogi State.

The query was issued on behalf of the Governor by the office of Kogi State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Bar. Ozigi Salam.

It stated that the first class monarch was deliberately absent during the visit of Mr President to Okene to commission projects executed by Alhaji. Yahaya Belto, the Governor of Kogi State.

He said it was only on the night of 28 December 2022, that the commissioner visited him at about 9:30 pm and informed him that Mr President would be coming to Okene the following day to commission some projects and that he should stay back in his Palace while the President will be coming to pay him a courtesy visit upon his arrival.

“On the 28 of December 2022 at about 8:15 am, I received an unofficial copy of the visit programme of Mr President and I noted that Mr President was meant to commission the Ohinoyi’s Palace at 10:10 am.

“This observation implied that Mr President was to commission another Palace other than my current Palace that I have been occupying since I was coronated in 1997.

“It is worthy to note that as the Paramount Ruler of Ebiraland, I have not been officially informed of the existence of any new Palace. I, therefore, prepared in compliance to your instruction to receive Mr President as it is customary in our Traditional Institution and I quickly put together a memorium to present to him to appreciate his second visit to Okene since 1985.

“I had just concluded preparations to receive Mr President when I heard an earth-moving bomb blast at the rear entrance to my Palace close to the new Mosque across the street at 9:00 am.

“While I was in the Palace ensuring that the casualties of the unfortunate incident were being attended to, I was informed that Mr President had concluded his programme and departed to Lokoja.

“I also discovered that the main wall of the entrance to my Palace had been breached and all entrances to the Palace had been barricaded to make access to and fro impossible.

“Ihave been kept in the dark from the reception arrangements and necessary entertainment to welcome Mr President on his 2nd visit to Okene, and from extolling the pleasure of my dear people to receive him.

“I have no intention to “exhibit deliberate attitude and actions regarded as bringing Kogi State and Ebiraland, in particular, to grave disrepute and regarded therefore as quite unbecoming of a revered Royal Father of my status.

“All allegations referred to in your letter, especially Paragraphs 3 and 4 are very unfortunate and I regard the same unfair to my ripe experience and age coupled with my candid, Royal dignity, accepted here in the world internationally.

“It is worth mentioning to enforce gratitude to His Excellency Alh. Yahaya Bello, the Executive Governor of Kogi State, who I have not seen for some time now, to have informed Mr President that I was unavoidably absent due to my ill health at his grand reception.

“On the other hand, a person unknown to me represented me and read out a welcome speech to Mr President on my behalf, which was not sanctioned by me.

“Finally, in spite of the aforementioned points, it is noteworthy that since the unfortunate incident on the 29 of December 2022, this Letter of Query is the first communication, written or otherwise from any official of the State to me, without any commiserations or enquiries about the unfortunate bomb blast that led to the intended disruption of Mr President’s programme, loss of lives of innocent Ebira people, massive damages on my Palace and rancour within my domain.”

OPINION: Why They Shoot Friends And Spare The Enemy

0
Azu Ishiekwene

By Azu Ishiekwene

Her funeral rites would have begun on Wednesday, January 11, but were postponed because her family, along with the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), is awaiting an autopsy report. As of the time of writing, the matter had faded from the headlines and a new date was yet to be announced.

Obviously, the autopsy would serve the legal purpose of demanding justice for Bolanle Raheem, given that legal subterfuge can sometimes undermine evidence and change the strongest of cases in favour of injustice.

Hopefully, Bolanle’s assailant, Drambi Vandi, will have his day in court – a right and privilege he denied her. Otherwise, no autopsy is needed to ascertain that if a loaded gun is pointed at a woman and the trigger is pulled and a bullet is fired, the target will die or at the very least, be mortally wounded.

The Nigeria Police would like Nigerians to accept the farce that they are friends. But their penchant for enforcing death on the next unlucky fellow has, for ages, given Nigerians proof to the contrary.

The Christmas Day misadventure, when for the umpteenth time, a policeman allegedly terminated the life of Bolanle Raheem in Lagos left our mouths dry and turned a festive day into a sombre, tragic one.

The N5billion the NBA is demanding as restitution for her family won’t change the fact that her life was avoidably snuffed out. Unfortunately, the amount won’t be extracted from the killer cop, but from the state – not a good price to pay for hiring, training and arming questionable characters as law enforcement agents.

Let me be clear. I have met fine policemen and have been proud of the excellent achievements of a number of them deployed in other countries to serve. Sadly, they are in the minority. How did we come to be afflicted with an armed and murderous force that shoots first and thinks afterwards – if they think at all?

Was #EndSARS of such limited value that it couldn’t dent the sordid history of years of police abuse? Or how else do we understand friends who keep their guns trained on us, spare the enemy, and shoot to kill on a murderous instinct?

It’s too short an interlude to even contemplate: Just two months after the second anniversary of #EndSARS and yet another policeman lets loose another canon on a fellow citizen – confirming that, as was feared all along, nothing has really changed. Whether it’s SARS (Special Antirobbery Squad) or SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics Squad), the chameleon by another colour, is still a chameleon!

The Nigerian Police seem to have a shorter memory than its notorious short fuse – a tendency and reputation for letting fly bullets at anyone gutsy or just merely disagreeing with a policeman holding a firearm. Otherwise, the national outrage from October 2020 was more than enough to have tamed the sadistic instinct to release the safety catch and pull the trigger on soft targets.

But why should members of the public be targets of police harassment, let alone murder, when the law – policemen are officers of the law and get a basic training to that effect – recognises even suspects as innocent and deserving of their rights and liberties until otherwise determined through a competent trial?

The police in Nigeria are seldom bothered about the law or its letters. They are empowered and enamoured by a uniform, which over time, has become a license for impunity, and a passport to get away with infractions privately and publicly. This appears to cut across all uniformed organisations in Nigeria.

A good number of Nigerians have a story to tell about the police. Often, the accounts are unpleasant and a debit charge on the credibility of the force. They have in more cases than can be counted, been public enemies despite the pretences to the latter.

The general public perception towards them is that of scorn and disdain and they are deemed to be more in alliance with crime and malevolence than they pretend about morality or justice. Just travel by road or mill around busy places in town – or indeed, walk into a police station in the backstreets.

The public remonstration against the police anti robbery squad in October 2020 turned global attention on Africa’s largest economy and led to the scrapping of the squad – or more appropriately, its change of designation.

But the police haven’t been shy of letting the public know, that like they say in the streets, nothing dey happen! – a Nigerian parlance also used for expressing defiance or indifference.

And because nothing dey happen with the police, something happened on Christmas Day. A mother and her unborn child became the victims of a “known gunman” – to remind the President that security agents armed with assault weapons and live cartridges either have poor training in weapons handling, or disregard caution altogether.

The public outcry, once again, is because the tragedy happened in Lagos – a megacity with cameras, citizen journalists and media houses within hearing distance.

Callous murders and extortions by policemen have continued after EndSARS in far flung places across the country without media reportage and therefore remaining unknown and uncounted.

Nigerians travelling by road, especially commercial drivers, are daily compelled to add settlement charges to the police on passenger fares – if passengers and drivers wish to get to their destinations with minimal molestation from officers of the law – trained and paid to protect citizens from harassment and molestation.

As Nigeria struggles to raise its police-civilian population ratio from an abysmal 1:600, it’s fair to say that quantity alone does not guarantee fewer abuses, as we have seen from the US and, in fact, South Africa, just to name two countries with higher police numbers.

An important difference between these countries and Nigeria, however, is that while they are making deliberate efforts to improve the standards of police conduct by punishing infractions when they occur, we have specialised in sweeping police brutality under the rug, while keeping the door open for the worst police recruits.

A member of the Police Service Commission (PSC), which supervises staff recruitment, welfare and discipline, Austin Buraimoh, said last February, for example, that criminals were being recruited into the force. And the power play over who does what between the Commission and the top police hierarchy will ensure that this dangerous scandal continues.

In the aftermath of Bolanle Raheem’s deadly shooting, a senior advocate of Nigeria, Olumide Yinka-Fusika, on a live TV programme was obliged to recommend the outsourcing of the force.

While that may sound extreme, only few would argue that the quality and structure of the force is serving anyone other than a privileged few who pay for special police protection and their bosses who profit not just from this elite indulgence but also from other sordid purposes in which they deploy policemen.

Until the police force is sufficiently decentralised to the point where states and local communities have significant control over recruitment, funding, training and deployment, quality and performance will continue to suffer. I’m often amused by the trope that states or local communities can’t be trusted to manage local police forces.

It’s an argument that ignores the evidence of our own history; it is, quite frankly, a hangover from the crooked unitarist thinking that while it is OK for the federal government to use the police as it pleases, the states and local communities cannot be trusted not to misuse the force.

This view conveniently ignores that even in unitarist countries, there are levels of control, inter-agency regulations and mechanisms that set boundaries and define areas of collaboration. Trusting the benevolence of an overwhelmed federal government to manage local policing and security has proved to be a disaster costing too many lives.

As long as Nigeria insists on the present broken system, rogue policemen and their bosses up the food chain will continue to fester with deadly consequences. And it doesn’t matter what President Muhammadu Buhari says about justice for Bolanle Raheem, if the system doesn’t change fundamentally, there would sadly be another Drambi Vandi.

The only question is, when.

PVC Collection: INEC Grants Extension Of Time

0

By Ayodele Oni

Hope rises for eligible voters in the country, especially those that had registered but yet to collect their Permanent Voters Card, (PVC) at the offices of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

They now have a chance to pick up their PVCs as INEC announced that a grace period has been approved for those in that category.

INEC National Commissioner & Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye broke the cheering news on Thursday on Abuja.

A statement signed by him reads “At its regular meeting held today, Thursday 12th January 2023, the Commission deliberated on a number of issues, including the ongoing collection of Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) nationwide.

“The Commission is encouraged by the turnout of registered voters and the surge in the number of collected PVCs across the country.

“In some of the States, as many as 100,000 PVCs were collected in the last five days since the devolution to Ward level started on Saturday 6th January 2023.

“The Commission is determined to ensure that registered voters have ample opportunity to collect their PVCs ahead of the forthcoming election.

“For this reason, the timeframe for collection of PVCs is extended by eight days. Instead of ending on Sunday 22nd January 2023, the collection of PVCs will continue until Sunday 29th January 2023.

“At the moment, the period of collection is 9.00am – 3.00pm daily (including Saturdays and Sundays).

“As a result of this extension, there is a consequential adjustment of the collection by location as follows:

“Collection at Registration Area (Ward) level is extended by one a week from Monday 16th – Sunday 22nd January 2023.

“Collection at Local Government level will resume on Monday 23rd – Sunday 29th January 2023.

“Meanwhile, the Commission is investigating allegations of extortion by officials at some of the collection centres and inducement by some unscrupulous voters to circumvent processes in order to obtain their PVCs. Those found culpable will be face disciplinary action and/or prosecution.

“Similarly, the Commission is disturbed by allegations of discriminatory issuance of PVCs in some locations.

“This is against the law. All bonafide registrants are entitled to their PVCs and to use them to vote on Election Day in any part of the country where they are registered.

“Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) have been directed to ensure that no such practices occur nationwide and take immediate disciplinary action against violators.

“For the record, the Commission has printed 13,868,441 PVCs for all new valid registrants as well as applicants for transfer or replacement of cards.

“Nevertheless, issuing officers should compile any complaints about non-availability of cards and forward them to their immediate supervisors for the attention of Resident Electoral Commissioners (REC) who shall compile and forward them for necessary action.

“The Commission once again appreciates the patience and perseverance of citizens as we continue to finetune our process to make the collection of PVCs easier.”

A New Nigeria Is Possible, Obi Assures Enugu People

Peter Obi

The Labour Party Presidential Candidate Mr. Peter Obi campaign rally in Enugu, the capital of Eastern region was unprecedented in all ramifications as supporters overwhelmed him in all the points he visited with security operatives having a hectic day controlling crying and cheering supporters who struggled to have a glimpse of him.

Addressing a rally of mammoth supporters at Michael Okpala square, Obi declared to the jubilant organic crowd that a new Nigeria is possible, noting however that we first have to remove failed leaders.

“A new Nigeria is possible. You can’t drive from here to Onitsha. After 24 years they can’t complete Enugu to Onitsha , 200 kilometres road.  24 years they can’t complete Enugu to PortHarcout, 159 kilometers. And they still want power again, to do what?”.

Obi said he is in the race to rescue Nigeria. “Some one called my attention to a publication that says my company has been frozen in United Kingdom, I laughed because I left UK since 2006. I told the white man that I am done with your country, I am going back to my country. I don’t have any residence permit of any other country.

The former Anambra state governor said that  if given the mandate he and his Vice Yusuf Baba- Ahmad ,“will secure and unite Nigeria, we will ensure that police will become your friend. We will recruit more people at all levels of our security agencies, we will look after them and we will insure them in case anything happens to them or their families. So they will do their work. We will ensure there is rule of law in Nigeria

Obi assured the people that his government will restructure the international airports in Enugu, Abuja, Lagos, Kano and Porthacourt to make it competitive with others across the globe.

“If we are in government, if you are in South East, you don’t need to go anywhere to fly to any part of the world. People will fly from Abuja to any part of the world. They will from Lagos, Kano, Port Harcout to every part of the world because the country will be booming again”

The VP Candidate in his own remarks at the rally said that beside, “Peter Obi, any other person contesting election in 2023 is deceiving himself. Peter Obi is one exemplary Nigerian who is moving Nigeria from disunity to unity.  He will take Nigeria from consumption to production.”

2023:  APC Jittery, As North East Youth Threatens To Dump Shettima; Keyamo Kicks

0

By Akinwale Kasali

The All Progressives Congress, APC and its Presidential Candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu are jittery and presently in a dilemma following the threat by North Eastern Youths to dump Kashim Shettima, the Vice Presidential Candidate of the APC.

The leadership of the North East Youth and Stakeholders in the region who are one of the  dominant voices drumming support for Shettima are angry with the former governor of Borno State for continually undermining its effort.

The Group, at a Press Conference in Abuja, addressed by the Acting Chairman of the APC North-East Youth and Stakeholders Forum, Shaibu Tilde, said Shetima’s snub of the Group, shortly after his victory, has led to the loss of some foundational members of the structure including the Zonal Women Leader, Amina Manga of Bauchi, who defected to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party with over one million women.

Tilde lamented that another loyalist of Shettima and Treasurer of the group, Yusuf Banki, left for the PDP with over 500,000 youths.

He said, “We are saddened to be in the news for what others will interpret as a negative reason at this time, but we are also obligated by our love for our great party, the All Progressive Congress, to make this timely intervention before our party’s fortunes in the region sink.

“We do not need to emphasise that this is an injury time for the game because the general elections are less than two months away, leaving no room for error, but instead attention must be focused on tightening all loose ends, which is not the case with our party in the northeast.

“Ladies and gentlemen, it is with deep regret and concern that we report that the fortunes of our great party in the Northeast are on the verge of collapse due to the obstinate, careless, and exclusive leadership style of our Vice Presidential Candidate, Hon. Kashim Shettima.

“The Northeast APC Youth Forum has watched with tears as its many supporters continue to defect to the PDP. Unfortunately, the trend in the Northeast zone is worsening by the day, with Sen. Kashim seemingly turning a blind eye to these heinous developments in our party in the region.

“We the Youths in the Northeast have lost our Zonal Treasurer from his home state of Borno, Hon. Yusuf Shariff Banki, due to his failure to support youth in the region to launch massive mobilisation. It is worth noting, gentlemen, that Sheriff led over five hundred thousand youth to the PDP.

He stressed that as if that was not enough, our Zonal Organising Secretary, Hon. Murtala Gamji of Taraba led over two hundred youths to the NNPP, and our Zonal Women Leader, Amina Manga of Bauchi led one million women to the PDP.

“Out of the eight million youth votes we have already mobilized for Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, our Presidential Candidate, for the Presidential Polls, Senator Kashim Shettima has already plundered over three million through his actions with the wave of defections from our party. This is simply unacceptable!

“In the light of this, we urge our party’s Vice Presidential Candidate,  Senator Kashim Shettima, to immediately reverse his steps and correct his error for the sake of the party, the region, and the teaming youth.

“It is on record that this group, then led by its Current Acting Chairman, Hon. Shaibu Baffa Tilde, threw their support behind Sen. Kashim Shettima and committed massive resources, both human and financial, to ensure he emerged as the APC’s Vice Presidential Candidate.

“We do not seek compensation from Sen. Shettima, but our resentment stems from Sen. Kashim’s failure to recognize a formidable Youth force of the party that stood by him through thick and thin after realising his ambition to become reality as Vice Presidential Candidate from the northeast region.

“As a result, the Northeast APC Youth Forum wishes to withdraw its unequivocal support for Sen. Shettima.

Our actions should not be misinterpreted, but rather judged by our affection for our dear party.

“While we intend to take our next steps regarding his candidacy in the coming days, we would like to express our unwavering support for our Presidential Candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, and the APC. We will continue to work for the advancement and victory of our beloved party in the upcoming general elections.”

Meanwhile, in reacting to the threat, Festus Keyamo, the spokesman for Tinubu-Shettima Presidential Campaign Council,  disclosed such misunderstanding is bound to happen in the build-up to a major election.

While contesting the alleged number of members who had dumped the party in the North East, Keyamo noted their grievances would be addressed.

Keyamo cautioned that it would also be wrong for the support group to attempt to resort to subtle blackmail to have their way.

“It is an election season. Everybody is important. No doubt about that. We can assure them that whatever grievances they have will be addressed.

“However, there is a need to point out corrections on some things they said. There are so many support groups working for the party in the North East and we will try to give all equal attention. While I agree that we need everybody, we don’t see recognise some people as greater than others. Everybody is important.

“If some groups think they are the most important or deserve to be pampered more than others, we will not accept it. That would be subtle blackmail. The vice presidential candidate is the one who wants to treat all of them as equal as possible. He is obviously not going to pamper some over others. All groups are important.

“Again, the numbers quoted in their statement are over-exaggerated in order to draw attention. They don’t control those figures and no such numbers have left the party.

“Firstly, going by the APC register, how many registered members do we have in the North East as a party? So that means they are taking everybody at the party away, isn’t it?

Rampaging gunmen who have literally held Anambra State hostage, were not satisfied with killing a Security man and three of his colleagues, they had enough time to behead him before the Police, who were alerted, arrived.

The Police arrived 55 minutes later. But they were able to neutralise one of the gunmen, and recovered a number of sophisticated arms and ammunition.

The gruesome incident took place at the headquarters of the Ihiala Local Government Area. Villagers said the gunmen arrived at about 2.00am on Friday. Their arrival was announced by dozens of gunshots which took four members of the local vigilante, stationed to keep watch over the Secretariat, unawares. The gunmen, instantly, shot dead the four of them, and for reasons best known to them, beheaded one of them.

Thereafter, they proceeded to wreak havoc on the buildings. They razed a number of them using Improvised  Explosive Devises, IEDs. “Everywhere was on fire”, noted a villager who pleaded not to be named. Five buildings were completed razed down.

They include the Administrative block, the Primary Health Care block, office of the Independent National Electoral Commission, that of the National Youth Service Corp, and that of the National Civil Defence.

Tochukwu Ikenga, DSP, and Spokesperson for the Anambra Police Command, confirmed the incident to Reporters. He said a number of the gunmen escaped with gun shot wounds.

He disclosed what were recovered at the scene include: Two locally made IED launchers, seven undecorated IEDs, 40 pieces of live cartridges, 15 live 7.62 MM AK47 ammunition, knives and charms.

At the time of filing this story, the State Government was yet to issue a statement.

Ihiala, a semi-urban Local Government, which shares a boundary with Imo State, has, for about one year, been a hot bed for violence, and gunmen and cult activities. It is gradually, but surely becoming a no-go area.
