“Jagaban Army”: PDP Demands Investigation Of Tinubu, Other APC Leaders

0
Jagaban Army

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has alleged the establishment of a dangerous militia code-named ‘Jagaban Army’ by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its Presidential Candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The PDP in a statement dated January 16, 2023, and signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, said the establishment of the alleged Militia, further confirms its position that the APC plans to unleash violence on innocent Nigerians and disrupt the 2023 general elections.

Reports, backed by photographs and video evidence showed the alleged militia members weaing what looks like a Military uniform

Said the Party: “By establishing a militia and draping them with military uniforms, the APC and Asiwaju Tinubu have declared war on Nigerians and openly dared the Nigerian Military apparently with the aim to undermine our national security architecture and sovereignty as a nation.”

The statement added: “Nigerians can recall that our Party has on several occasions alerted the nation of the vicious plots by the APC to destabilize the electoral process and called on the security agencies to place APC leaders on watch list and take immediate steps to stop their evil scheme against our nation. The APC and its Presidential Candidate is a clear and present danger.”

The statement pointed out the dangers associated with the establishment of such militia, and asked Security Agencies to investigate the APC Presidential Candidate and other high profile members of the APC. The Party recalled a meeting in London where Tinubu ordered his supporters to snatch victory and run with it.

“Our Party holds that the formation of this dangerous militia is in the series and plots and steps in compliance with the directive of Asiwaju Tinubu in London to members of the APC to take power by all means.

“In his directive in the leaked video, Asiwaju charged his followers that “political power is not going to be served in a restaurant, it is not served a la carte. It is what we are doing; It is being determined; you do it at all cost; fight for it, grab it, snatch it and run with it”.

According to the PDP, “there are already apprehensions in the public space that the APC has been recruiting, training and arming thugs and terrorist elements in secret locations across the country and stockpiling ammunitions for the harassment maiming and killing of Nigerians before, during and after the 2023 general elections. Evidence of their nefarious activities are already manifest in many parts of our country.”

It, also, alleged: “The PDP has been made aware of plots by the APC to use the “Jagaban Army” which is designed to operate in fake military outfits similar to that adorned by the APC Youth Leader at a public event recently to pose as soldiers to harass and terrorize innocent Nigerians.

“The PDP for the umpteenth time, demands that President Muhammadu Buhari should take immediate steps to ensure Asiwaju Tinubu and the APC do not derail our democracy just because they have been rejected by Nigerians.

“Our Party also charges the security agencies to take immediate action to invite the Presidential Candidate of the APC for questioning as well as arrest the APC Youth Leader, Dayo Israel and other APC leaders involved in this threat to the existence of our nation.”

No Diaspora Voting This Time, Says Yakubu At Chatham House

0

By Uche Mbah

Professor Mahmood Yakubu, the Chairman of Nigeria’s Independent Electoral Commission (INEC), at Chatham House,

has said the diaspora voting cannot be feasible in this electoral year due to lack of the enabling law to back it.

Yakubu, Tuesday, 17th January 2023 joined the growing number of prominent stakeholders of the 2023 Presidential election at Chatham House London to tell the world their agenda and role in the election process.

In response to a question about diaspora voting, Yakubu said the electoral body is in full support of it, but is held back by the Nigerian law which makes it impossible for Nigerians in diaspora to vote in the nation’s internal elections.

“The position of law remains; unless you are resident in Nigeria, you cannot register and you cannot vote,” he said.

However, he said he is “absolutely convinced that it is only a matter of time when this will be achieved. ”

The Independent National Electoral Commission has in the past collaborated with different diaspora groups in the quest for diaspora voting. Their collaboration yielded enough results for INEC to send a bill to the National Assembly to give it the necessary legal backing. But the National Assembly threw out the bill. Even then, it got a mention in the constitutional review last year.

The Nigerians In Diaspora Commission, NIDCOM, is not relenting in the pursuance of diaspora voting.

“Voting by those in the diaspora should be a settled issue and if you ask me, I will say you are preaching to the converted but the commission does not have the power to make it happen. The enabling law will have to be provided for it to happen,” said Yakubu.

“Not just because of the remittances as people would argue, but because they are citizens and citizens must enjoy rights,” he added.

Diaspora Nigerians are asking for voting rights since the estimated $60 billion annual remittances are a big cushion to the fledgeling Nigerian foreign reserve.

Yakubu is the latest of persons directly connected to the upcoming elections to be invited to Chatham House, a London-based think tank and resource group. Peter Obi, the Labour Party Presidential Candidate spoke at the House yesterday, 16th January. Bola Tinubu, Candidate of the All Progressives Congress, was recently hosted.

According to Chatham house management, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, has not replied to invitations while the New Nigerian Peoples Party, NNPP, Candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, is expected.

These are the four front runners out of the eighteen Presidential Candidate.

Obi, in his tour of United States, has told Nigerians that if elected, this will be the last time the diasporeans will be excluded from elections.

OPINION: How They Planned To Embarrass Obi In London

0
Peter Obi at Chatham House

By Valentine Obienyem

Chatham House in Central London is a place where the best rub minds in a rarefied atmosphere. It has continued to host personalities interested in governing states, where their knowledge about policy and emerging developmental trends are gauged. This is what informs a question session even after a written speech has been delivered.

As I contemplate Obi’s road to Chatham House, I remember an Igbo folk song about a crooked man, who married a crooked wife, beget crooked children and walked along crooked paths, so that everything about him was crooked. Crookedness is what defines the nature of men Obi is contesting against. They represent the jejune Nigeria of the past that Nigerians, young and old, are queuing behind Obi to supplant from the Nigerian political field for their colossal damage to the nation.

In their characteristic crookedness, they planned to embarrass Obi  in London. Who else read an open letter that was widely circulated on social media platforms? The letter was a warning to Mr. Obi not to visit London, not to talk of Chatham House. Checks proved the authenticity of the contents of the letter.

Some people who performed woefully guessed rightly that if allowed, Obi would shine. Steeped in crookedness and mischief, they tried to stop him. However, they failed mournfully because they were dealing with a man whose life is defined by integrity.

After all was said and done, Obi was in London at Chatham House on Monday, the 16th of January, 2023. His performance proved that those who wanted to stop him did not have the moral force to do so.

As he was being introduced by Dr. Alex Vines, the Director of African Programme, his confidence and looks bespoke a mind serene, erect, and firm. Kingsley Anajemba (Aluta Panorama), who came all the way from Manchester and seated beside me asked a question: “I hope our man will bubble with ideas as usual ?”

Now, let us recall Obi’s performance at Chatham House, where he inhaled cold and exhaled wisdom. His speech was an interesting narrative, not fatiguing and in strange tongues, but a clear and flowing stream, sparkling now and then with substance of governance.

He built the speech around the theme of the engagement: “Nigeria’s 2023 Elections: a Vision for Policy Change and Institutional Reforms.” He could be relied on to say something whenever he spoke.

Obi started with the foundations of the problems of the country by tracing the roots thus: “The Nigerian state is captive to an elite gang-up and a rentier political economy that has concentrated political power in the hands of those who came to power and influence mainly through their own contrivances and not through the affirmation of the people, and therefore, do not have the incentive to serve the people’s interest. It is the capture of the State that has led to the problems she faces on all fonts. On the insecurity and economic fronts, he said: “We have alarming insecurity that has led to loss of many lives and properties, significant decline in food and economic output, immense trauma that has compromised the mental health of communities, and in some cases, irredentist pressures and disaffection with the Nigerian project. The economy is in crisis with a troubling debt profile worsened by oil theft of proportion once hard to even imagine, two economic recessions in six years and a lamentable power sector that significantly constrains manufacturing and social life.”

The continued economic decline of Nigeria has led to widespread poverty in the realm. Using statistics, Obi explained to the audience how poor Nigerians are: “How did we (Nigeria) plunge into such economic decline that we have overtaken India as home to the biggest pool of the absolute poor in the world? While the poverty rate in India is about 16%, that of Nigeria is about 63% with about 133 million Nigerians classified as multi-dimensionally poor.”

Peter Obi was evidently appalled by what could be termed the mutation of morals and manners among politicians, when he spoke of the need to maintain ethical standards and introducing positive values into governance by exploiting one’s rich upbringing. His words: “In many ways, this is at the heart of my remarks today which are deeply rooted in my upbringing, particularly my mother’s counsel that I live a life of positive impact and manage both personal and public resources most prudently for sustainable/inclusive growth and development of the society. It is the principle that guided my stewardship as Governor of Anambra State, Nigeria and led to our much-commended performance with some priced awards to show for it. Some of the awards were for outstanding accomplishment in key Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) now Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It is the same counsel and principle that is guiding and motivating me to offer to serve in a New Nigeria!”

On what could be regarded as the second part of his speech, Obi introduced his running mate, and an economist respected for his suave resourcefulness, Sen. Datti Ahmed.  The business of restoring the glory of Nigeria would be a joint effort. Obi gave a little insight, including the colour of their Cabinet: “Senator Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, my running mate, and I are committed to a new politics that starts with the ethics of servant-leaders and anchored on the marriage of clean hearts and skillful hands.”

Noting what disunity has done to the country, and that the strongest incentive to cohesiveness is internal unity, Obi expressed his commitment: “To secure Nigeria, end banditry and insurgency, and unite our dear nation to manage our diversity, such that no one is left behind”.

On insecurity, he implied that bad times accentuate that phenomenon. The arm ready to strike is always held back by the abundance and watchfulness of the Police.  Here, he promises far-reaching reforms. He hopes to achieve it “by pursuing a robust reform of the security governance structure with a strong coordinating mechanism that assures that all levels of government – Federal, State, and Local (with 3-level policing structure) – are aligned with strong collaboration with partners from both the private sector and development groups to provide the required services and deliver results for every Nigerian. Once this is done, it is also important to have a single, clear, coherent, and consistent communication system to keep the government accountable, citizens engaged and involved in the development process. It is important for institutions to be able to provide strong leadership, coordination capability, partner and engage collaboratively with all relevant stakeholders in an environment that mutually reinforces values.”

Peter Obi is not happy with Nigeria’s mono-economy. He laments the criminality of subsidy and oil theft as resting on the fact that as Nigeria is today, only oil flows in her economic arteries. He consequently insists that he “will move Nigeria from a country of rent-seekers sharing Oil receipts and consuming conspicuously, to one that produces, based on vast factor endowments whose value-chains can move us towards a high employment economy.”

He foresees an agricultural revolution too, and dreams of a country in which agriculture shall be  given the attention it deserves as  one of the pivots around which the shift from consumption to production shall rotate. Hear him: “The second plank of my policy thrust is to ‘Shift emphasis from consumption to production by running a production-centered economy that is driven by an agrarian revolution and export-oriented industrialization’.  With about 70 million hectares of arable land, we will pursue an agricultural revolution through proper segmentation of Nigeria to activate and harness the factor endowments of different parts of the country for both rapid and mechanized agricultural development and as a pillar for Nigeria’s other sectoral development and industrialization. We will incentivise and invest in agro-cluster and industrial cluster development across our geo-resource zones to take advantage of agglomeration and scale effects particularly in North-West, North-East and North-Central regions of Nigeria. We will dredge both Rivers Niger and Benue, build dams and massively support the planting of economic trees across the country for local usage, poverty elimination, export and revenue generation.”

Obi is a product of the rule of law. He was the first person to assume office as a State Governor through the court process to retrieve his stolen mandate. It was also through the courts that he returned from impeachment and had his full tenure. His marriage to the rule of law always plays a key part in his political life. As President, he says he would “Restructure the polity through effective legal and institutional reforms to entrench the rule of law, aggressively fight corruption, reduce cost of governance, and establish an honest and efficient civil service“.

The world talks in terms of Artificial Intelligence, robotics and all the marvels of the time. Here, the world has left us behind, but the Obi/ Datti presidency will be desirous of catching up. In his words, “The fourth plank of our governance priorities is to ‘Leapfrog Nigeria into the 4th Industrial Revolution through the application of scientific and technological innovations to create a digital economy’. Building on the gains of the agriculture-led manufacturing and export, we will pursue the development of knowledge and skills to leverage on the emerging disruptive digital technologies, automation, Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence, robotics, virtual reality, block chain technology, biotechnology and data science – all of which are at the heart of the fourth industrial revolution.”

Understanding the effect of transportation and power on economies of the world, and how the comatose state of both militate against economic development in Nigeria, he offered a blueprint:  “The fifth plank of our governance priorities is to ‘Build expansive infrastructure for efficient power supply, rail, road and air transportation, and pipeline network, through integrated public-private partnerships, and entrepreneurial public sector governance.’ Our solution to the perennial power problem in Nigeria is a comprehensive one that covers transmission, distribution, generation and financing as detailed in our Manifesto. However, we will immediately complete the $2.3 billion Nigeria-Siemens network improvement deal to achieve 7,000 MW stable capacity by the end of this year (2023), 11,000 megawatts by 2024, and 25,000 megawatts by 2025. We will support local manufacturing capacity of power technologies and encourage and expand local R&D in universities, training centres, and workshops through which many jobs swill be created.”

As the Governor of Anambra State, education was among Obi’s strongest points. He would replicate what he did in Anambra at higher levels. Here, he did not speak in tongues: “Our 6th priority programme is to ‘Enhance the human capital of Nigerian youths for productivity and global competitiveness through investment in education and research, quality healthcare, and entrepreneurship education.’ The World Bank’s Human Capital Development Index ranks Nigeria 168 out of 173 countries. To move Nigeria right to the top bracket of the index, we will pursue a Marshall plan-type programme on education that incorporates compulsory technical and vocational skills, sports, entrepreneurship, programming, and digital skills from the primary to the secondary level. In line with this commitment to transform our educational sector, we will prioritize the funding of this critical sector. Our tertiary institutions will be remodelled to serve as hubs or centres for research, development, and commercialisation of ideas for the quick industrialization of Nigeria.”

Governing a State is quite different from governing a country; as the latter deals with external relations and international diplomacy. It is not as simple as we imagine. Many factors affect this, which prompted one man to say that nations weigh words by counting guns. But Nigeria has to start from the basics, hence Obi said: “Finally, our 7th priority is to conduct an Afro-centric diplomacy that protects the rights of Nigerian citizens abroad and advances the economic interests of Nigerians and Nigerian businesses in a changing world”.

After the speech came question time. I think it was more of a debate as exciting and as fascinating as a tournament. Obi’s agile intellect grasped the questions hungrily.  All the questions asked were expertly answered. He was never at a loss for an illuminating comparison or arresting phrase.

The moment they asked him about security and how he would tackle it,  it was easy to see how worried the issue has agitated him. This was confirmed by a worried look that darkened and ridged his face around the rubicund nose. Who is not worried about the spate of insecurity in the country?

After his own appearance, Obi and his team went into meetings, evaluating what was done and reviewing all questions.   He held six meetings with other groups the same day.

On the contrary, after his own appearance at Chatham House, the old man of strange tongues entertained his entourage in bibulous hilarity. Watching his dance steps, one would think he had discovered a hidden truth.  By such indulgences, he provides raw materials for his “abuse” as he called it only to turn around and complain about the caricatures of satirists.

By his every step, Obi has proved his preparedness for the job.  Age being on his side, he would absorb readily, unlike others, the drain the arduous task of governance will make upon his resources of body, mind and will. More than others he understands the country and her problems better.  More still, he has never been part of the problem. This is why each time he speaks about Nigeria, he is so plain and truthful that they affect that catharsis of emotion that even set some crying. Many cried at Chatham House.

From his speech, all we can do now is to console Nigerians and inform them that with Obi and Datti in the race,  promising meteors have  entered  and are poised to alter the political orbit.

Uzodimma to SE Women: Take A Decision Now; Tinubu Will Consolidate On Achievements, Imo First Lady

0
Hope Uzodimma and Imo Women

Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has canvassed for mentality change from his  brethren in the South East with regard to national politics, reminding all and sundry, particularly the womenfolk, that the time to take a decision that would affect them and their children positively in future, is now.

The Governor spoke on Tuesday at the Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu Square, Owerri while addressing a mammoth crowd of All Progressives Congress women at the South East Zonal rally organised by the Tinubu/ Shettima Women Presidential Campaign Team.

It was also an occasion where the First Lady of Imo State, Barr (Mrs.) Chioma Uzodinma, who is the South East Coordinator of the Tinubu/Shettima Women Presidential Campaign Team, told her colleagues that the APC has done well, so, the gains of the Party needed to be consolidated.

Mrs. Uzodimma, therefore, urged the women to vote for the APC all the way in the forth coming elections, insisting that the presidential candidate of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu is a good man who has all it takes to consolidate the gains already recorded by the Party.

Mrs. Uzodinma told the gathering that the rally was a way of further stressing the need for women to appreciate the benefits that would come to them if they vote for Tinubu and his Vice, Sen Kashim Shettima, in the forthcoming general election.

She noted that in the almost eight years of the APC administration there are a lot of achievements to market the Party with and emphasized that “APC has performed well and Tinubu is a good candidate that will consolidate and improve on the numerous achievements.”

“With Tinubu and Shettima as President and Vice there will be increased women participation in government at all levels,” the Imo First Lady noted and charged the women not to be found wanting in the discharge of the most important duty of casting their votes for APC.

She then advised them: “Go and collect your PVCs if you have not and those whose PVCs are old should look for them and clean them up. The APC is a special breed which we must work hard to retain and maximize its advantage.”

Mrs. Uzodimma assured the APC women in the South East of victory for Tinubu/Shettima and all APC candidates in the forthcoming elections.

Adding his voice in support of the rally, the Governor Uzodimma called for a mentality change in the South East which he said, demands that “the South East politicians must not only think for themselves but for their children and their future existence.”

The Governor congratulated the women for pulling off the big rally, saying he came to greet them and to give them an inspirational message, that “it is time to take a decision.”

He reiterated that the South East has decided to embark on a campaign that will see her people at the centre of decision making in the country and to achieve same, they “have decided to be part of the greater Nigeria.”

“South East is better in the Nigerian Project. South East has decided to be part and parcel of Nigeria and there is no going back because of its numerous benefits.”

On the mode of campaign put together by APC, the Governor reiterated that there is no going back on the decision “to run a unified campaign that will carry all contestants along at the same time.”

Insisting that things will be easier for the women because APC is at the helm of affairs at the National level for now, he reassured of total win for APC in the South East.

Chairperson of the Tinubu/Shettima Women Presidential Campaign Team, and wife of presidential candidate, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, who was excited over the sea of women heads that graced the occasion, expressed surprise at  the level development in Imo State under Uzodimma and urged the women to remain committed to the ideals of the APC in Imo and Nigeria.

She thanked Mrs. Uzodimma and the Governor for the mammoth crowd of women that attended the programme and singled out the Imo State Governor for appreciation for his huge support to the APC in the South East in particular and Nigeria in general.

Mrs. Tinubu enjoined Nigerians not to be deceived by the antics of those who believe that religion should be used to blindfold the people, saying that “Tinubu/Shettima are God fearing and will deliver on their mandate to make Nigeria better.”

She further assured that her husband will “give the women programmes on skills, equip those who will want to go into farming, improve education and most importantly, ensure that women occupy juicy positions in his government.”

“In their government everybody will have a say because everyone will be carried along.”

She prayed for peace in the South East which she said is inevitable as Tinubu has already identified the place as “industrial hub of Nigeria.”

In their brief messages, the APC National Women Leader,  Dr. Betta Edu and the APC State Chairman, Imo State, Dr. Macdonald Ebere,  assured the women that South East is intact for Tinubu/Shettima and all APC candidates in the forthcoming election.

Earlier on arrival, the Team had paid a courtesy call on HRM, Eze (Dr.)  Emmanuel Okeke, Eze-Imo and members of his Cabinet at the Eze Imo Palace, Mbari Street Owerri, as mark of respect for culture and tradition and to inform him that they were in the State for the rally.

In her remarks at the courtesy visit, Mrs. Tinubu told the Imo monarchs that they  came to seek for their royal blessings and prayers for the success of their rally in Owerri.

Receiving them warmly, Eze Okeke who is also the Chairman Imo State Council of Traditional Rulers commended them for thinking it wise to pay him the courtesy call and proceeded to bless them on their mission.

He reminded them that as traditional rulers they are non-partisan, but as citizens of Nigeria they know what is good from bad and will always be part of the good ones as reflected in Tinubu/Shettima.

Present at the rally were the Deputy Governor of Imo State, Prof. Placid Njoku and his wife, Bola, the Speaker of Imo State House of Assembly and the wife, members of the State House of Assembly, members of the Imo State expanded Executive Council, National Women Coordinators, South East Women Coordinators, some women Ministers and wife of the Speaker of  House of Representatives, Mrs. Salamatu  Gbajabiamila, among other important dignitaries.

Power Generation: Obi Not Frivolous, Will Not Join Issues With Anybody

0
Peter Obi

The Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi is not going to run a frivolous government if given the mandate by the Nigerian  people and will not allow any waste of the peoples’ commonwealth.

Obi-Datti Media office has noted  the negative excitement of some ruling party’s supporters over a remark made by the LP Presidential candidate concerning the issue of power generation in Nigeria.

Obi had said during his stellar appearance at Chatham House in United Kingdom on Monday that if elected he will declare a frontal war on power with a view to tackling the perennial power issue in the country squarely and decisively.

He had said that if South Africa with a population of less than 60 million and generating over 40 thousand megawatts is declaring  emergence on power, Nigeria of 200m people with less than 20 thousand megawatts need to declare war.

The former Anambra state Governor also said that he intends to retain and improve on the existing power contract between Nigeria and German firm Siemens Company, but some APC followers clearly ignorant of the way Obi works, are saying that he is campaigning on Buhari’s project.

Obi has said severally that his campaign would be issue driven and therefore would not allow the noise of proxy soldiers to distract him or defocus his view.

The LP candidate is meeting Nigerians on points he intends to make to rebuild the tattered nation and not on a mission to find faults.

In Anambra state where he left yet unbeaten record in governance , he continued from where his predecessor Dr Chris Ngige stopped, notwithstanding how he came to power that Obi that had to recover it through the court.

The LP candidate had gone to Egypt to understudy their power issue and also to see  how Siemen, the same company handling Nigeria did it in that country, that is a laudable mission of one who is really committed to making a difference in governance and should be praised for his unquenchable quest for solutions to issues

Obi has a lot to say about himself and what he intends to do why Nigerians should vote for him and is not on any fault finding or praise singing on anybody.

Frail-looking Akeredolu Fit To Perform Official Functions; Ondo Govt Douses Tension On Governor’s Health

Rotimi Akeredolu in a Prayer Session

By Ayodele Oni

Following widespread anxiety about the state of health of Ondo state Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, the State Government has clarified that he is fit to perform official duties.

Rumour of Governor Akeredolu’s health condition became aggravated on Monday when his wife, Betty, accused a female aide of bringing various kinds of traditional concortion and water from prophets to treat the Governor.

The First Lady, in a voice recording, which has gone viral, had accused Mrs Ademosu, a female aide, of sneaking in concortions for the Governor to drink to cure an undisclosed ailment.

The State Government, in a statement by the  Chief Press Secretary, Richard Olatunde, assured there is nothing to worry over Akeredolu’s health.

The statement reads “We have observed the growing anxiety about the state of health of the Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, CON.

“The good people of the State and, by extension, other friends and well-wishers have continued to express concern over the wellness of the Governor, especially since yesterday.

“We are constrained to respond to these concerns and assure our people that by the grace of God, there is no cause for alarm on the Governor’s state of health.

“Governor Akeredolu, just like every other mere mortals has had some health challenge for which he has since received treatment and recuperating speedily.

“Since the Governor is not a super human and the immunity his office enjoys does not extend to physical wellness or otherwise, the health issue is therefore not an unusual one.

“However, contrary to speculations and insinuations making the round, the Governor, though frail, is  discharging his official functions.

“Mr. Governor is not faced with any life-threatening illness that would have encouraged any alleged conspiracy in his administration.

“He, in fact, held Executive Council meeting with the Exco members till 4pm on Wednesday, 11th January, 2023 after the Security Council meeting, where far reaching decisions were taken on the escalated clashes in Ikare-Akoko.

“On January 7, 2023 Governor Akeredolu led his brother Governors in the Southwest and other party bigwigs to receive the Presidential Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akure for the State Presidential Campaign Rally.

“On January 8, 2023, he was at The Redeemed Christian Church of God, Jesus House Cathedral, Region 22 Headquarters, Oke-Ijebu, Akure for the Holy Service commemorating the 2023 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration.

“For emphasis, the Governor, who participated in rigorous campaign activities on the 7th of January, couldn’t have been bedridden as widely speculated.

“Moreso, last Friday, Governor Akeredolu still inaugurated a new Refrigerated Van for the use of Meat Dealers in the State. He also received the Melvin Jones Award of the Lions Club International same day.

“While we appreciate the growing concerns about his wellbeing and indeed, appreciate the outpour of prayers even beyond partisan lines, we urge all persons of goodwill to ignore unfounded insinuations capable of creating any false sense of needless anxiety.

“The Governor will continue to discharge his official duties to the good people of Ondo State in line with the REDEEMED Agenda of his administration while he finds quality time to rest for renewed vigour and strength just like any man in his situation.”

Ondo Communities Accuse Gov Akeredolu Of Acquiring Land For Ranching Without Compensation

By Ayodele Oni

After waiting for 44 years with hope almost lost, some farmers and indigenes from communities in Owo local government area of Ondo State are set to tackle the state government over acquisition of their land.

As at the time government took over the land, the people’s means of livelihood, such as cocoa plantation was destroyed.

The affected farmers, after an unending wait for compensation, have embarked on protest over destruction of their means of livelihood.

The aggrieved protesters explained that despite the state government failure to pay compensation to them for the land used for the siting of the state-owned Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, (RUGIPO, it has embarked on fresh destruction their cocoa plantation to pave way for cattle ranching.

They called on Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, an indigene of the area and the State Commissioner for Infrastructure, Land and Housing, Engr Raimi Aminu, to urgently intervene before it will lead to crisis.

Some of the communities affected by the ongoing destruction of cocoa farms and other farmland include; Ulura, Amurin, Oronaiye, Bobakanle, Opopogboro, Ago Adafin, Umoodun and others in Owo.

Community leaders, from the affected communities, Chief Yahaya Oranaye of Owo Kingdom and Adewale Owolabi, Olura, said the State Government acquired about 1,950 Hectares of land from the people in 1978 for the establishment of the Polytechnic.

According to them, there was mutual understanding that they would not only be paid adequate compensation, but would also be assisted by the Government with alternative Town Planning arrangements for future community expansions, but till today no compensation and part of the land were not returned to the original owners.

The Community leaders said, “Following the letter, the Hon. Commissioner had a meeting with the community on 1/11/2022, promising to address thier complaints. They (Govt’s officials) equally promised to call another meeting within two weeks from that date.

“They have failed to call the meeting. Now bulldozers are on the site destroying the peoples’ houses, farms and means of livelihood. The government should kill all of us instead.

“We are in a difficult position on this matter. I can bet anything that the Government never paid compensation to us (land owners).

“The government only did enumeration, which even confirmed that we are even the owners of the land used for the polytechnic’s site.

“If we don’t handle this matter very well and urgently, it may lead to serious avoidable crises. Our lands were taken, we have no other place to go, we are not paid compensation, the 25 percent release of acquired land extant policy of the Government has not been applied in our case, and now the same government is destroying our means of livelihood for the purpose of cattle business.”

The communities had earlier in September, 2022 written a protest to the Governor through the Commissioner, when they pleaded with Mr Akeredolu to urgently order the release of part of the massive land acquired for Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo in lieu of compensation in order to enhance the expansion of the affected communities that were the original owners.

The letter signed by their Lawyer, Barrister Femi Emmanuel Emodamori, the people said, “Although the successive Governments in the State have failed to fulfill the promises made to Our Clients in terms of payment of compensation and community expansion plans, they have been fully cooperating with the State Government and peacefully channeling their grievances in this regard.

“However, based on the general rapid population growth over the past 44 years when the land was acquired from Our Clients, their growth, expansion and/or development is now completely hindered by non-availability of land.

“The greater portion of the massive land acquired from Our Clients is completely unused and may never be needed for the purpose of its acquisition.

“This is based on statistical comparison of lands prescribed for the establishment of Universities and Polytechnics by the relevant regulatory agencies and lands acquired in other parts of the State for the establishment of other public higher institutions like Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), Ondo State College of Medicine, Adeyemi University of Education and Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology (OAUSTECH), and/or Ondo State Government agencies, which can be verified from the relevant Ministries.

“Land acquired for Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo is more than three times the size of the land acquired for Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko; it is 18 times the size of the land of OAUSTECH, Okitipupa, and 19 times the size of the land of UNIMED, Ondo.

“In fact, Rufus Giwa Polytechnic’s land is more than twice the size of the land of all the other above public higher institutions combined.

“The 1,955 Hectares acquired from Our Clients for the establishment of the Polytechnic would therefore appear to be completely excessive in the first place.”

OPINION: Interrogating APC’S Zero-sum Politics

0

By Steve Osuji

It’s bad enough that APC is an agglomeration of strange elements; worse is that the All Progressives Congress is neither progressive nor even democratic at that. The so-called political party has in its near eight years at the apex of power, proven that it’s the very antithesis of its name and all the essence of a political party.

First, APC is everything but progressive. In its membership are among the most rapacious and power-mongering politicians in the land. They seek power, not for the good of the people or the society. They seek power not even for the sake of it, no. The rump of the APC are power-hungry hogs who’s only mission is to devastate the treasury.

And for APC, it’s a zero-sum game. It’s power or nothing.  APC would hamper any institution or ford any bloody river to grab power. APC would play blood politics and genocidal games to get power and keep it.

A few examples will corroborate this point.

On May 14, 2012, then Gen. Muhammadu Buhari,  addressing CPC members from Niger State had made the now infamous statement to the effect that should the general elections of 2015 not be perceived by him to be free and fair, “the dogs and the baboons would all be soaked in blood.”

Already, an orchestrated violent protests had greeted the results of the 2011 polls in the north, claiming the lives of hundreds of Nigerians. This infernal and gory sound byte by Buhari unsettled the polity and went into the annals as the most unstatesmanlike comment by any Nigerian leader.

But either by design or coincidence, the land has indeed remained soaked in blood since 2015 when President  Buhari ascended the presidency of Nigeria under the flag of the APC.

Not only have the dogs and baboons been soaked in blood, Nigerians, male female, young, old and of all tribes and tongues have been embroiled in endless violence and wanton bloodshed.

Karma is, of course, known to be an unforgiving bitch and President Buhari has through his eight years in office, been tasked with cleaning up the gory mess he once dreamed about. The bloody post-2015 violence has had its epicentre in the northwest, President Buhari’s very home turf.

All of a sudden, terrorists-from-hell,  euphemistically called BANDITS,  had emerged from the hills and forests of the northwest. Recall that this was perhaps the most peaceful part of the country, untouched by the Boko Haram of the northeast. The so-called bandits that came in the wake of APC election victory and rise to power in 2015 has turned out to be more violent, more disruptive and more devastating than even Boko Haram.

According to Amnesty International, in 2020 alone, bandits kidnapped about 5,295 persons in the northeast for ransom. They included students, women, children and even security agents. Thousands have been killed and thousands more displaced. Schools were shut and many are still to reopened till date.

Many top government and security officials who ought to know have fingered the APC to be responsible for ‘importing’, arming, and camping bandits in the hills of the northeast for the purposes of violently claiming victory should the 2015 elections not be in their favour. But having ‘won’ the 2015 elections,  APC couldn’t manage their “northeast brigade”, it was alleged. Mayhem was therefore unleashed on Nigerians at a proportion worse than  dogs and baboons being soaked in blood.

There are even more examples of APC’S genocidal politics.

The nearly 15-year-old Boko Haram terror also has its roots traceable to the APC. Though BH predates the APC, elements currently playing crucial roles in the APC are known to be the brains behind BH. Most notable among them are Senator Ali Modu Sheriff (SAS) and Ibrahim Shettima, both former governors of Borno State.

SAS is currently among the executive committee members of the APC while Shettima is currently its vice presidential candidate. These two men were in the centre of activities in the halcyon days of the formation and blossom of the Boko Haram sect. In the run up to the 2007 general election, some elements of a Muslim sect had been militarised and deployed in order to win reelection by hook or crook. After he won 2nd term, SAS couldn’t manage his militia. By 2009,  Borno State had become ungovernable and indeed a no-man’s land.

It was long ago determined that the terror group, Boko Haram emerged as a result of power tussle and vaunting ambition of politicians more than religious differences. According to a 2012 special report on Boko Haram by the US Institute of Peace, … “When one looks deeper, however, one finds that politics – more precisely, control of government patronage – is the primary cause of many of these conflicts.”

APC’S  stint at the centre in the past nearly eight years has proved beyond doubt that politicians would stop at nothing to grab power, control government and dispense patronage. Their evil schemes would include funding wide-spread insecurity by way of bloody violence in targeted areas, tampering with the electoral system, attempting to yank the chief umpire midstream and even disruption of the entire process if perceived not to be favourable.

Signs are emerging and the auguries are dim that some politicians may be contemplating a devious PLAN B. The other day  the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had signalled there might be postponement or outright cancellation of the February elections.

The notice came from no mean a personage than the chairman of The Electoral Institute (TEI), Professor Abdullahi Abdu Zuru. He had anchored his worries on the wave of election insecurity across the country.

Zuru may well have been flying a kite of sort as  INEC’S spokesman,  Festus Okoye promptly stepped in to allay any fears of the elections not holding.  Stopping short of condemning, Prof. Zuru,  Okoye reassured Nigerians that INEC was ready and willing to carry through the elections come February.

Yes, there has been a fresh wave of senseless violence and blood shed around the country,  especially in the southeast.  But who is to tell the masterminds.

For instance, when former governor of Imo State,  Chief Ikedi Ohakim was attacked on the 2nd of this month, he had told the media that it could only have been the handiwork of a sophisticated group and not the usual suspects like the IPoB secessionists. He and his children survived the attack which left four police escorts dead. He had noted that the weapons deployed in the attack could only have been high calibre military types.

In summary, APC is currently in a desperate and vicious mode. After a two-term debacle in government and in its serial bungling of everything, couldn’t manage to find a viable presidential candidate, the party would engage the devil if that’s what is required to win the February elections.

BOTTOMLINE: APC has no scruples whatsoever or any pretences to democratic ethos. More blood of innocent Nigerians have been shed in the last nearly eight years than at any other time in our history. The party doesn’t give a hoot about the life of the average Nigerian … all it wants is power.

Remember this party bequeathed us Boko Haram; they masterminded the killer Bandits; and have we forgotten the Chibok Girls?

Remember over a millions fellow Nigerians are still languishing in IDP camps and let’s spare a thought for the genocidal killings in Kaduna, Benue and Plateau  the Kaduna train attack and abduction; the Kuje jail break and more … all in the last eight years.

Hardly anyone was apprehended or tried or jailed for eight years. Names of financiers were concealed by government; perhaps they are top APC members.

As they fine-tune their zero-sum game, let’s remember it’s time to cleanse our blood-drenched land and unite Nigerians.

As the elections draw near,  Nigerians must watch the bloodthirsty APC closely, they are up to no good!

Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Godwin Emefiele, resumed duties in his office, Monday, January 16, 2022, healthy, reinvigorated, upbeat, self-assured, and rearing to go.

Emefiele’s status has been a subject of speculations for a couple of weeks in the Media.

While some people said he had absconded and was seeking asylum in the United Kingdom/ United States of America, others said he took an extended leave, all, it was alleged,  to avoid being arrested by the Department of State Security, DSS.

But Emefiele, back from his annual  vacation resumed on Monday. The same day he resumed, a new story had made the rounds that the DSS invaded his office, cordoned it off, in a bid to arrest him over corruption charges.

However, a couple of hours later, the DSS debunked the story in a terse statement, signed by its Spokesperson Dr Peter Afunanya. The Service dismissed the story as fake, and said there was neither an invasion, nor an attempt to arrest the  CBN Governor.

In a statement which announced that Emefiele has resumed duties, CBN’s Director Corporate Communications, Osita Nwanisiobi, said the Governor “resumed work with renewed vigour to perform his duty.”

Read the statement titled: CBN Gov, Emefiele, Resumes Duty After Annual Leave:

“The Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr Godwin Emefiele, has resumed Duty after his annual vacation abroad. Mr Emefiele, who proceeded on leave in December 2022, resumed work today, Monday, January 16, 2023.

“The Governor resumed with renewed vigour to perform his duty ahead of the first Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting of the year, scheduled for January 23 to 24, 2023.

“Mr Emefiele remains committed to performing the task before him in line with his oath of office, and the policy direction of President Muhammadu Buhari.

“While thanking the public for keeping faith with the Bank, we urge Nigerians to continue to support the policies of the bank, aimed at ensuring a stable financial system, and the Nigerian economy in general.”

Peter Afunaya - DSS Spokesperson

The Department of State Services, DSS, has debunked the story which suddenly made the rounds on Social Media, Monday, January 16, 2023, that its operatives invaded the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, and cordoned off the office of the Governor, Godwin Emefiele, in a bid to arrest him.

The story about the DSS and  Emefiele has been on the front burner for about two weeks.

However, the DSS in a terse statement signed by its Spokesperson, Dr Peter Afunanya, debunked the alleged invasion, and said it neither invaded the CBN, nor arrested its Governor.

Afunanya’s statement reads:

“The attention of the Department of State Services (DSS) has been drawn to the false news making the round that its operatives invaded the Central Bank of Nigeria and arrested its Governor, today 16/1/23. This is fake news and quite misleading.”

Emefiele has been on his annual  vacation, and was expected to resume on Monday, January 16, 2023.
