Nigeria Diplomatic Community, Ndigbo, Will Miss Obiozor Say Buhari, Uzodinma

0
Prof George Obiozor - Ohanaeze President

In their hundreds, Leaders poured encomia for late Professor George Obiozor.

The President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Ambassador (Prof.) George Obiozor was, on Friday, laid to rest at his Awo Omamma country home in Oru East Local Government Area of Imo State, with President Muhammadu Buhari and Governor Hope Uzodimma agreeing that Nigeria, the Diplomatic Community and Ndigbo will miss him sorely.

President Buhari and Governor Uzodimma spoke in their separate remarks at the Maria Assumpta Catholic Cathedral, Owerri where the burial Mass for Prof Obiozor was conducted by the Auxiliary Bishop of Owerri Diocese, His Grace Moses Chikwe, was held.

The Governor said that “Nigerians, the Diplomatic Community will miss Prof. George Obiozor greatly,” a position President Buhari reiterated in his condolence message read on his behalf by the Minister of State, Mines, Chief Henry Ikoh.

Governor Uzodimma who described death as “very very wicked” said “the Igbo race has ’’lost a gem, Nigeria has lost a star, and the world has lost a man that can be described as a global encyclopedia.”

The Governor added that “the entire South East has lost a consummate and compassionate leader, Imo State has lost one of its illustrious sons, a pacesetter, erudite scholar, advisor, councilor, and one of the pillars of the 3R government.”

The Governor, therefore, enjoined the bereaved family, the Igbo race and Ohanaeze Ndibo in general to take heart, noting that “it is difficult to believe that Prof. Obiozor will die but it is the will of God that all mortals will, one day, join him in his bosom.”

Governor Uzodimma said that Prof. Obiozor represented a solid rock of support to his Government, “the kind only a father provides to his son.”

He noted that as a rare breed academic, Prof. Obiozor attained the pinnacle of his career, served Nigeria as an Ambassador to three countries of Cyprus, Israel and United States of America as well as played a key role in mid-wifing the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs to a global phenomenon, thereby helped to put Nigeria on the global map for positive reasons.

“Yet he was as humble as they came,” Uzodimma said.

He enjoined the family to have faith in God and encouraged everyone to pray for the deceased family, noting that “only prayers will console them.”

The Governor who reminded the deceased family that the Bible tells us not to mourn like those without hope, said “the legacies of Prof. George Obiozor will guide all who knew him to always remember him as a man who came and conquered his environment in all ramifications.”

Governor Uzodimma thanked those who attended Prof Obiozor’s burial and condoled with the friends of Prof Obiozor over the pain his death had caused them.

The Governor said every Nigerian and Ndigbo in particular have lost a great man. He agreed with everyone that spoke at the reception that Prof. Obiozor has not died.

In his condolence message,  President Buhari represented by Chief Iko also described Prof. Obiozor’s passing as a “great loss to Nigeria, the Diplomatic Community, Ndigbo and particularly the Igbo people.”

Buhari told the congregation that “Prof. Obiozor was a renowned academician, a diplomat par excellence who served Nigeria in different capacities as an ambassador in three countries where he gave a good  account of himself.”

The President added:  “Late Prof. Amb. George Obiozor was a Nigerian Patriot of the highest order and a famous Igbo Leader who, when it mattered most, led the Igbo socio-cultural group called Ohanaeze to carter for the interest of the Igbo Nation.”

He then concluded that the deceased left “an indelible mark in the sands of time,” emphasizing that “the Igbo Nation will indeed miss Prof. Obiozor, Nigeria will miss him and the diplomatic Community will miss him a great deal.”

President Buhari urged the Government and people of Imo State, Ndigbo, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide and Nigerians in general to bear the irreplaceable loss with fortitude.

In a brief homily, the Auxiliary Bishop of Catholic Diocese of Owerri, Bishop Chikwe reminded the congregation that “as Christians, death is the beginning of a new life, what we owe ourselves is to be always prepared for the last day, because the world we are into is ephemeral since we are going somewhere.”

He added: “We should always trust in God because our hope is in him. God is always interested in us and to be sure of us making heaven. Besides prayers we should reconcile with all now since we don’t know when the day will be.”

He thanked those who came to honour the late Prof Obiozor and his family.

He thanked, especially, Governor Uzodimma, the Owerri Diocese and all the people for their prayers, their financial and moral support.

The Bishop also thanked the leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo for the different arrangements they made “that culminated in the befitting burial of their husband, father, brother and uncle Amb. Prof. George Obiozor CON.”

The burial reception ceremony of Prof Obiozor held at the Rockview Hotel in Owerri, attracted the who is who in the South East regardless of political persuasion.

They included but not limited to the wife of the Governor of Imo State, Barr. (Mrs.) Chioma Uzodimma, the Deputy Governor of Imo State, Prof. Placid Njoku, Speaker, Imo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Emeka Nduka and his colleagues, and members of the Imo State Expanded Executive Council.

Others include, the Chief Judge of Imo State, Justice Theresa Chikeka and senior members of the State’s Judiciary.

Mohammed Abacha

By Gideon Njoku

The Court of Appeal, Kano State Division, has sacked Mohammed Abacha as the Governorship Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. Kano State.

In a unanimous judgment read by the Honourable Justice Usman Musale, the three Justices of the Court ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC,  to recognize Sadiq Wali as the duly nominated Candidate of the Party.

INEC had, earlier, recognized Wali as the Candidate, but Abacha went to Court, and was adjudged the right Candidate. That prompted Wali to approach the Appeal  Court for justice.

That justice was given to him on Friday, 10th February, 2023,  by the Court of Appeal which declared that Abacha, a son of late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, did not participate in the PDP Primary Election, and therefore, could not have become the Candidate.

The Governorship Election is scheduled for 11th March, 2023.

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expelled Senator Chimaroke Nnmani from the party.

Also expelled are a Senatorial Candidate, two House of Representatives Candidates from Ekiti State, in the election coming up in two weeks time – February 25, 2023.

Those expelled had earlier been suspended about two weeks ago for their refusal to attend the Presidential campaign rally held in Ado Ekiti earlier.

A statement on Friday by the Party’s Spokesman, Debo Ologunagba, stated that “at its 566th meeting today, Friday, February 10, 2023, PDP approved the expulsion of the following individuals from the Party for anti-Party activities and other grave offences in violation of the Constitution of the PDP as amended in 2017

“Those expelled from the Party are:

Senator Chimaroke Nnamani, Enugu State; Hon. Chris Ogbu, Imo State.

“Others are: Ajijola Lateef Oladimeji, Ekiti Central; Olayinka James Olalere, Ekiti Central II; Fayose Oluwajomiloju John, Ekiti Central I; Akerele Oluyinka, Ekiti North I; Emiola Adenike Jennifer, Ekiti South II

“The expulsion takes effect from today, Friday, February 10, 2023.”

Nnamani, a two-term Enugu State Governor under the PDP, a two-term Senator on the ticket of the PDP who is also vying for a third-term under the PDP, has brazenly been playing anti-party activities by openly supporting, and campaigning for the Presidential Candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Bola Tinubu, at the expense of his Party’s Presidential Candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

He, lately, attributed his action to the non-zoning of the Presidential ticket by the PDP to the South, an excuse which has been dismissed by not a few people as an after-thought.

Nigeria Decides: Obi Leads In Six Polls Including Bloomberg’s Latest Poll

Peter Obi in Gombe

Barely a fortnight before the 2023 Presidential election on February 25th, Labour Party’s standard bearer, Peter Obi is still leading in the latest opinion poll released by an international agency, Bloomberg

According to a statement from the Obi-Datti Media office,

the LP Candidate emerged as the most popular candidate in six polls including the two surveys conducted by Premise for Bloomberg. Another poll released this week by Lagos-based media and data company, Stears predicted that Obi will win in the event of a high turnout, but lose to Bola Tinubu of the APC if participation is weak.

The latest poll from a San Francisco-based Premise polled 2,384 Nigerians from Jan. 26 to Feb. 4 via a smartphone app. with submissions selected from quotas developed by age, gender, and location across the country’s six geopolitical zones, the company said. Results were then weighted against the original quotas to ensure national representation.

Two-thirds of respondents said they intend to vote for Obi, a third-party candidate, in elections scheduled for later this month. The results of the survey conducted for Bloomberg News by Premise Data Corp. were published on Friday – 15 days before the vote to choose President Muhammadu Buhari’s successor.

Of the 93% of participants who said they’ve decided how to vote, 66% named Obi as their preferred choice. Obi scored a slightly higher 72% among decided respondents in an earlier Premise poll that was released by Bloomberg in September as the official election campaign kicked off.

About 44% of Nigerians have smartphones, according to the Alliance for Affordable Internet. Premise estimates that the access rate rises to 74% among the voting-age population.

Obi’s rival candidate Bola Ahmad Tinubu of the ruling APC came a distant second with 18% while PDP’s Atiku Abubakar came third with 10% among the decided voters.

Naira Redesign: Council Of State Urges CBN To Allow Old Notes Circulate

0
Buhari with Council of State Meeting

By Ayodele Oni

The Council of State has endorsed the naira redesign policy but with a caveat that the Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Godwin Emefiele, should make new Naira notes available or recirculate the old notes to ease the suffering of Nigerians.

The hybrid meeting, was presided over by President Mohammadu Buhari, and lasted for over four hours, at the Council Chambers, Presidential Villa, Abuja.

In attendance were former Heads of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon (retd), Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd) and Goodluck Jonathan, while former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, joined the meeting online.

Two former Chief Justices of the Federation, Alfa Belgore and Mahmud Muhammad, were also in attendance.

Briefing State House correspondents at the end of the meeting, Governors of Taraba, Darius Ishaku , Lagos, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, (AGF) Abubakar Malami, said generally the policy was accepted by members but raised concerns about the implementations.

Ishaku said “The CBN was advised to make money available in quantum. The old money can also be recirculated to ease the suffering of the poorest of the poor.”

Sanwo-Olu, on his part stated that Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmood Yakubu, and Inspector General of Police (IGP), briefed the council on state of preparedness for the 2023 general elections, and assured that they were fully prepared.

Malami said: “We are on course as far as election preparedness is concerned.”

Naira Crisis: NSA Backs Govs, Warns Of Security Implications

0

The National Security Adviser, NSA, Major Gen. Babagana Monguno (rtd.) has expressed dissatisfaction with the the naira redesign policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, which has received scathing remarks from not a few Nigerians, and the International community for the hardship it has imposed on the public.

Mungonu who spoke on Thursday while appearing before the House of Representatives adhoc committee on Naira redesign and curency swap said the policy is posing a big security risk to the country.

The World Bank and International Monetary Fund, IMF have advised the federal government to give more time for the demonetisation  of the old banknotes,

For instance, the NSA who was represented by Abubakar Mustapha, a director in his office in charge of Defence said troops performing sensitive assignment in some part of the country have found it difficult to get their salary through digital channels.

He said the policy has serious implication for the upcoming election because “some of our soldiers are deployed in places where they cannot actually access digital means of paying for their daily subsistence.”

He tasked the committee on the need to “articulates better ways of actually addressing these issues.”

The NSA position on the issue is quite different from President Muhammadu Buhari and CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele who have insisted that the naira swap deadline of February 10 subsists.

The federal government would have gone ahead to phase out the old naira notes today if not for the Supreme Court ruling early this week that the N200, N500, and N1000 remain a legal tender for now, after a suit filed before it by three state governors of Zamfara, Kogi and Kaduna.

The apex court ruling has somehow mitigated tension after a slew of protests in some parts of the country over the scarcity of the new naira notes, some policy analysts say.

Recall that Governor Nasir El Rufai of Kaduna State had branded some presidency officials as fifth columnists capitalising on the currency swap to frustrate the emergence of Bola Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress, APC, as president in the February 25 election.

El Rufai made the allegation a few days after Tinubu also alleged that his enemies in Buhari’s govrenment are targeting his presidential ambition using the twin problems of fuel and naira scarcity currenclty facing the county.

The Presidency, however, denied such group exists in the administration.

Sokoto: Relief For Tambuwal As Deputy Debunks Defection Rumour

0

Ahead the All Progressives Congress, APC presidential campaign in Sokoto on Thursday, Manir Muhammad, the Deputy Governor of the state was said to have dumped the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and was heading for the ruling party.

The ruling party in the country held a massive campaign in the state yesterday attended by President Muhammadu Buhari, APC presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu and a host of other chieftains of the party, where PDP defectors were said would be received into the party.

In a viral letter on Wednesday, the state’s number two citizen was said to have sent a letter to his ward chairman of Kware ward, Kware Local Government Area, informing him of his resignation from the PDP.

The letter also came on the crest of suggestions that 11 commissioners have left the Governor Aminu Tambuwal cabinet to join the APC.

As the Director General of the PDP presidential campaign council many have feared that Tambuwal and PDP were fast losing grounds to APC following the rumoured defection.

In fact, the Deputy Governor the peddlar of the report said was planning to use the occasion of the APC presidential campaign on Thursday to join the party.

But, the report has now turned out a ruse as neither Muhammad nor commissioners have announced their resignation from PDP. The Deputy Governor said he’s loyal to the PDP and is not ready to leave.

In a statement on Thursday debunking the alleged report that he has dumped The PDP, the deputy governor said he never authored any letter to his ward chairman that he has left the PDP.

The statement signed by Abdullahi Abubakar, the Director of Press to the deputy governor, said Muhammad remains in PDP, and has not defected as being rumoured.

The statement said: “Our attention has been drawn to a letter purportedly issued in Sokoto that the Sokoto State Deputy Governor, Hon. Manir Dan’iya had resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“This is untrue and a blatant lie. Hon. Manir Dan’iya is still a bonafide member of the PDP, to which he reaffirm his unwavering loyalty and support.

“He is hereby dissociating himself from any such letter stating that he had left the PDP,”

Meanwhile, close watchers of what is going on in The Seat of the Caliphate , as the state is widely known told the magazine that the PDP would have been dealt a big blow if the deputy governor had left the party, few days to the presidential election.

United Kingdom Denies Ekweremadu’s Daughter, Sonia, Kidney Transplant – Chidoka

0
Sonia Ekweremadu and Osita Chidoka

By Adesina Soyooye

A former Minister for Aviation, Mr Osita Chidoka, has made a serious allegation against the authorities of the United Kingdom.

Chidoka alleged on Thursday, that the UK has inexplicably, refused to allow Sonia, 25 year old daughter of former Nigeria’s Deputy Senate President, Dr Ike Ekweremadu, to have a kidney transplant in London.

Sonia suffers from a rare kind of kidney disease for which she undergoes dialysis three times in a week. She lives in London.

An attempt by her parents, Dr Ike and Dr Mrs Beatrice Ekweremadu, to get her a donor landed them in trouble for which they, Sonia and a Dr Obinna Obeta are being prosecuted in that country for alleged paying and sponsoring a 21- year old trader from Nigeria to the United Kingdom, for the sole purpose of harvesting one of his kidneys to take care of Sonia’s ill-health. They alleged that the young man was unaware of the arrangement, was promised about seven thousand British Pounds, a chance to live in the UK, and had been passed off as Sonia’s cousin. The Ekweremadus and Dr Obeta deny the allegations.

Senator Ekweremadu and his wife were arrested in June 2022, at the Heathrow Airport, London, over the allegations. They were thrown into jail, and hauled before a Magistrate Court on Criminal charges.

While Mrs Ekweremadu was granted bail about two months later, the Court  refused to grant bail to Ekweremadu and Dr Obeta. They describe  Ekweremadu as a flight risk inspite of written, oral and  evidential assurances, even from the Nigerian High Commission in London.

Sonia was not detained, but is facing trial.

But on Thursday, 9th February, 2023, Chidoka raised an alarm that even though there are a number of willing kidney donors to Sonia, Britain has denied her the right to have the transplant. He wondered why, and called upon the Nigerian Government to intervene in order to save the life of the young lady.

He slammed the UK Government for disallowing Sonia a chance to live.

Chidoka: “On Monday, I was at the London Criminal court to observe the trial of Ike, Beatrice, and Sonia Ekweremadu.

Some weeks before, I had visited him at Wandsworth Prison. He was in good spirits. Ike is a family friend, a close ally, and an associate. My prayers, thoughts, and good wishes are with them at this time.

“We have known each other for the past 30 years when he was a grad student and part-time lecturer at the University of Nigeria Enugu Campus. His subsequent rise from Local Government Chairman to Deputy Senate President is a story for another day.

“What I find distressing is the refusal of the UK authorities to allow Sonia to get a kidney transplant despite a deluge of donors. I think the Nigerian government and we the citizens must call on the UK authorities to allow her to get a kidney transplant in furtherance of her fundamental right to life.

“No matter the outcome of the case, Sonia deserves a chance to live.”

“I appeal to the Minister of Foreign Affairs to please intervene in this serious issue of a possible violation of her right to life by the UK government.

“An intervention will save Sonia’s life and will be in line with global examples of countries intervening on behalf of their citizens.

“I am impressed the Nigerian High Commission has been, and still is present as an observer at the trial.

“As for the current travails of the Ekweremadu family, I can only say: this too, shall pass.”

The criminal trial continues.

Why It Is Madness To Contest Under APC

0

By Bode George

Without mincing words or trying to raise an alarm, the global golden rule called ‘order’ – a legal and constitutional process of conformity with law or decorum – seems to have taken a flight from Nigeria’s political, economic and social lives.

Due to this anomaly, which is a deviation from regulation or what is regarded as normal, there seems to be a graveyard silence while Nigeria is bedeviled on all fronts.

Something strange or unusual happens in the polity every day, leading to socio-economic turmoil permeating our entire landscape.

It is grieving to see Nigeria slowly sliding into a state of perpetual hopelessness.

In all honesty, I cannot decipher the logic of quietness against the cliff edge which the APC government has plunged the Nigerian state into, where there seems to be no opposing views, calling the ruling government to stop and rethink.

Our party, the PDP, and others, such as the Labour Party, SDP, NNPP, seem to have concurred to the present shenanigan.

I wonder, what hate, what evil, what madness will propel anyone of sane mind to plunge Nigeria into the present state of hopelessness, annihilation and abject suffering of the citizenry.

At the same time, I see it as absolute lunacy for anybody to campaign for APC or to contest on the platform of APC, due to the state of formlessness the ruling party has thrown Nigeria into.

It puzzles rationality. It benumbs our senses as Nigerians wake up every day to daily agonies of perennial fuel scarcity, tossed at us by the NNPC and the agony of non-availability of cash, occasioned by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) through its Naira rebranding.

Where is the Presidential candidate of our party, the PDP, Atiku Abubakar? Where is Iyorchia Ayu, the National Chairman. How come the voice of the DG, Campaign Council of the PDP is drowned in perpetual silence against the atrocities of the APC government with the presidential election just a few days away?

Why have they allowed their voices to be drowned in conspiratorial silence?

Where are the opposition political parties? What does the graveyard silence portend for Nigerians? It seems to mean that Nigerians’ right to good has been consigned to the dustbin by the political class.

Governments are elected to guarantee the pursuit of happiness , to ensure the protection of personal liberties, to create an atmosphere where all citizens can carry out their economic livelihoods without being subjected to oppression or being savaged by the lawlessness of incendiary actors.

The center appears overwhelmed, stunned, halted, stalled, puzzled about grappling with the Nigerian challenges.

I believe the various state actors can do better.

Managers of our economy should not take Nigerians for granted by churning out retrogressive economic policies.

We should rather strive to review our focus and our ultimate horizon . Nigeria must withdraw from the destructive brink.

Sadly enough, it is on record that Nigeria has continued to toy with the issue of power supply which is very germane to the development of any economy, particularly, a developing economy like ours.

Presently, our country loses an estimated $29 billion in accruable revenue every year due to epileptic power. This is not sustainable. Power is the very lifeblood of all industrial revolution. It is the fuel of all economic development.

A nation without efficient power supply cannot rise into the bright dawn of the digital civilisation. It is stuck forever in the bleak dark side of economic underdevelopment and teeters inevitably on economic ruination.

Indeed, something must give to spur a Nigerian rebirth and renewal, lest we become the permanent invalid African giant.

To change course, to redefine our path, we must cultivate the essential ingredients of meritocracy as the critical building blocks of a modern society . Wherever young, vibrant, intelligent minds are given a pride of place to steer the destinies of their nations, such societies invariably widen the opportunities for competitive growth, encourage a healthy contest of ideas and strengthen their developmental advantages.

Sparing a thought for the chaotic cash crunch imbroglio which has brought the nation to its knees with nobody spared of the suffering being experienced, I make bold to say that the decision of the manager of our financial system, the CBN, to redesign the Naira, has only pushed the country further into dire straits. Our national economy has sunk deeper into the abyss, and the people are being made to become refugees in their own country with hunger ravaging every home. The policy on the currency should not have been contemplated in the way it was implemented.

It is only pathetic for the CBN to come up with such policy, despite its good intentions because the present ugly state of our everyday life of epileptic power supply, high rate youth unemployment and sundry social challenges renders all the positive intentions of the policy worthless. The citizenry are only worse for the policy, toiling in vain every day for the non-availability of the new notes.

The tragic comedy of the financial crisis is the internal exchange rate racket going on in all the states.

For you to get Naira cash across the counter and from POS operators, there is an ‘exchange rate’ (charges) depending on the financial smartness of the operators.

Nigerians now pay between 10% and 25% for them to get their hard-earned Naira cash. Nigeria must be the only country in the world where you pay ‘officially’ a percentage in local currency for you to get your money in banks.

It is important to escalate this point that Nigerians cannot be forced to move away from a cash-based economy to a complete cashless regime overnight like the CBN wants to implement, with our present archaic state of technology like the internet which is still in its nascent and epileptic state and the perennial fuel supply situation which has also thrown the country into turmoil .

The current hitch in the supply of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) across the country is scandalous.

As Africa’s largest crude oil producer, many months of fuel scarcity, especially during the Christmas and New Year festivities, reflects the dysfunction in Nigeria’s public administration and the economy.

This is not new, as petrol shortages have been recurring for over three decades. Scarcity of fuel had resurfaced several months ago, before the new year celebrations and has defied all logic and solutions. The government and its agencies are clueless, making conflicting statements and embarking on uncoordinated actions.

Laughably, the directive by the State Security Service to the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria, Depot and Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria and other stakeholders to resolve the current fuel crisis has not yielded any positive result, other than a worsening scenario of the crisis, pushing the country more to the brink of collapse.

This is the time for Nigerians to open their eyes and minds by voting for a competent and experienced person to take us to the promise land.

We cannot afford to make mistakes this time around.

Any move short of this is a recipe for complete chaos.

A word is enough for the wise.
