Obi: ”We’re Bringing All-encompassing Changes”

0

The Presidential Candidate  of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi on Saturday, one week before the all- important Presidential election, assured Nigerians that if voted in, he and his Vice,  Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmad will bring the all-encompassing change that will take Nigeria to where it is supposed to be.

In a message to Nigerian voters via his Twitter page, Obi declared; “Fellow Nigerians, we are down to crunch time – 7 Days to the Main Day. Our strength is in our diversity.

“We need to reset and reboot Nigeria in all ramifications –leadership and governance, security of life and properties, economic and political freedom. We must celebrate our shared values and responsibilities”.

Obi said that if elected the change he and Datti will seek will be all-encompassing, “we will bring back patriotism and national pride. Loyalty should be to God and Country. The Constitution and Rule of Law will have primacy”

The former Anambra state Governor told the youths in particular that he came into the race for them; “In this march to freedom, I have not come out for myself! I have come out for the millions of youths that are losing hope in our beloved country!

“Datti and I, wish to deliver a new Nigeria that is POssible! I have come out for the millions of women who are afraid of tomorrow and what it holds for them and their children! I have come out for the poor who are asking whether it’s a sin to be a Nigerian! For them, I have come! For them, Datti has come!”

“Our message has been consistent. Nigeria is not bereft of the required human capital necessary for good leadership. Nigeria is also not bereft of good governance ideas and plans.

But he regretted that, “our country is bedeviled by the impunity of those few who have perfected the dubious act of state capture. These national interest issues need to be addressed urgently. The process will start in earnest on 25th February.

The LP standard bearer assured the people that their strategy for securing the country will be enduring as, “We will raise the population to police officer ratio to a higher level and ensure properly manned, equipped and technologically driven security system.”

Afenifere Pledges Support To Obi, Promises Him Five Million Votes

With less than Six days to the 2023 Presidential Election, a Group under the auspices of Afenifere National Youth Council, ANYC,  has vowed to support the Presidential Candidate of Labour Party, LP, Peter Obi, to become the President in the February 25 election.

Eniola Ojajuni, the National President of the Council, said that the track records of Obi when he was Governor of Anambra State is there for everyone to see as he performed brilliantly.

He stressed that the Group is solidly behind him and will make sure that he becomes President of the country, succeeding President Muhammadu Buhari.

Ojajuni added that one of the top-notch plans was the restructuring of Nigeria, believing that the poll will be free and fair.

“We are here to endorse the candidate of the LP, Obi officially as the sole candidate for the Southwest youth wing. It took us almost three months to reach the conclusions amongst 147 Youth Groups in Yoruba land, and today, we officially announced Obi and his running mate, Ahmed Datti, as our sole candidate for the presidential election on Saturday.

“Before we endorsed him, Obi assured us that the first thing he would do is to restructure the country.”

“We believe that the election will hold, and it will be free and fair and the youths in the SW are ready to vote obi. Our target is to give him five million votes.”

He implored Yoruba residents across the country to elect Obi, noting it is time for the South-East to produce the President.

“The reason we endorsed Obi is because the Yoruba has had his shot in the presidency through former President Olusegun Obasanjo, likewise former President Goodluck Jonathan who is from the South South. Our current president Muhammadu Buhari is from the North. It’s the turn of the Southeast to produce the presidency, for equity and justice,” he said.

APC Lagos Rally: LASTMA Diverts Traffic To Alternative Routes For Motorists

By Akinwale Kasali

The All Progressives Congress, APC, is set to hold its Rally in Lagos on Tuesday, 21st February, 2023. Traffic congestion is, therefore, expected within the axis of Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Lagos and adjoining roads.

Following this development, Lagos State Government has provided alternative routes ahead of the Presidential mega rally.

In a statement signed by the General Manager of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, Bolaji Areagba, on Sunday, the Government said the alternative routes would reduce inconvenience and travel time before and during the rally.

LASTMA advised motorists from the Local Airport to Maryland to use Kodesoh via Obafemi Awolowo to reach Kudirat Abiola through Ojota and connect to their destinations.

The agency said, “While the procession holds on the main carriageway on Ikorodu Road, the service lane will be available for use by the motorists without any hassle.”

The release, also, advised motorists from the Local Airport to Ketu-Mile 12 to ply Kodesoh through Obafemi Awolowo Way via Secretariat Road to Mobolaji Johnson Avenue through Ojota Interchange to Ketu and connect to their destinations.

The statement partly reads, “In order to reduce inconvenience, and travel time, and ensure the safety and security of all road users, adequate security and law enforcement personnel will be deployed along the entire dedicated routes to the stadium and alternative roads.

“We humbly seek the support and cooperation of all road users and apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.”

Nigerians, Peter Obi is Outstanding

Chidiogo Akunyili and Peter Obi

By Chidiogo Akunyili

Late Professor Dora Akunyili’s daughter tells Nigerians of her experience with Peter Obi, Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party

In the course of my life and career, I have met and interacted with several presidents and country leaders including Nigeria, Canada, Cameroon, Brazil, Austria, Germany, Rwanda, Mauritius etc.

One man stands out over the years. His name is Peter Obi.

In exactly a week, Nigeria will vote for its future.

Especially as I can’t cast a ballot away from home, I want to lend my voice to why Mr. Obi.

My reasons are largely very personal, with trust that action speaks in ways words cant.

When my mother lay on her dying bed, all the way in Bangalore, when there was no economic or political incentive to be by her side, he was there!

It was Peter Obi who announced the news of her passing to Nigerians when in our pain we didn’t have the voice.

When my husband Andrew and I got married, out of love for our late mother, in an environment where such a commitment is often buttressed by what one has to gain, he flew in to be there and to bear witness.

But above all, when our father’s life was cut short, and my little brother was alone in his pain to deal with the gruesome task of finding him, Peter Obi was there beside him. He had sprung into action and not only flew in, but went to the morgue, knowing that would be too much for any son.

He was the one that took our father to the doctors that cared for his body amongst so many more acts of kindness and care. All at his own expense, with ‘nothing’ to gain! No papers were told, no press was there to capture photos. It was simply because it is who he is.

He was there when I published the book on my mother. See excerpt that pertains to him and his reputation for honesty.

He was there to celebrate our sister Ije in her appointed role as Chief Medical Officer (CMO).

Well before the causes for celebration, and through moments of mourning, he was there when we had nothing. Providing needed school fees in the 90s.

The mark of a leader is consistency. He is someone that has been a pillar, and will be the same for the country.

I know that many Nigerians share this sentiment and it is my hope that on the 25th of Feb., We are granted a free and fair election that allows the chorus of our voices to be heard.eter Obi is Outstanding  Chidiogo Akunyili

“Nyesom Wike, We Cannot Save You”

Nwibubasa and Wike

By Leelonu Nwibubasa

As Governor  Nyesom Wike begs Rivers people to save him and his political career, a former Commissioner in the State, in an open letter, tells Wike he has burnt all the bridges and asked him to save himself

Your Excellency I heard you on national television begging Rivers People to save your political career by voting APC Bola Ahmed Tinubu for President.

The question is, Why is everything about Your Excellency’s own self preservation . Has Rivers State not Sacrificed enough for Your Excellency?

You trained as a lawyer in Rivers State University.

You were elected Chairman of your Local Government Council twice.

You were appointed chief of staff to the Governor of Rivers State for four years.

You were appointed a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria from Rivers State

You got elected as Governor of Rivers State and about completing eight years in office.

Your Excellency, you have been in office for about half of your current age , all by the magnanimity of Rivers People.

Rivers people jettisoned their power rotation arrangement to elect Your Excellency as Governor. It was all fair because you were the beneficiary.

The bullets sniffed life out of many for Your Excellency’s ascendancy.

Many has forfeited their own personal ambitions and purpose to feed your own unending drive for power (give me pawaa , I want to take pawaa you said).

Your brothers , your friends, your kinsmen all supported your ambition to become the presidential candidate of the PDP.

They denied their own desire to support yours. Their lives were at various times at risk in the air as they flew with Your Excellency from state to state.

You prevent competition even in Councilorship and chairmanship elections. You appoint Assembly members. You nominate all National Assembly candidates.

You forbid all your friends and associates who were interested in contesting the Gubernatorial election from purchasing nomination forms and from consultations and campaigning to the electorate.

In fact, they were not even aware of who the delegates that will elect them are.

In all , no one dare challenge your least opinion.

The ones you appointed as Commissioners live as slaves. They are only entitled to crumbs from the master’s table.

You sapped self esteem from all local Government Chairman. Took away dignity from our Royal Fathers ( you this small boy wearing Usman Dan Fodio cap).

You desecrated the Alter of God by railing curses from the altar (thunder fire them).

Our senior citizens you denied their benefits and gratuity.

The civil servants under Your Excellency are not worthy of reward or promotion.

Our primary and secondary schools without teachers, without seats and without roof.

Our health centers and General Hospitals are without Doctors, without nurses and without drugs. Built mother and child hospital and zonal hospitals under lockdown

The students on scholarship abroad sponsored by previous administration you didn’t spear to withdraw from overseas studies.

The ones at home not qualified to have bursary allowances.

The teaming youths you promised time and time again to provide employment for,  a promise you never intended to fulfill.

Market women you kept outside built shops.

The business of the non- indigenes , especially the Ikoku traders you destroyed.

Songhai farm you abandoned .

Buguma fish farm you abandoned.

Largest Rivers State owned shopping mall built by His Excellency Sir Celestine Omehia you abandoned , erecting your personal hypercity malls.

You disbanded Timariv leading to lose of hundreds of jobs.

Recruited , trained and abandoned without pay, thousands of Neighborhood Watch.

I can go on and on. Our Rivers money you donated at will to fan the embers of your ego while Rivers state is ranked among the top eight poorest states in Nigeria.

Yes , Your Excellency built roads and flyovers but left undone the more important task of building lives.

You artificially created poverty to keep us all under your powerful control.

You gained fame but now you have fallen to blame.

You built flyovers but you will be ran over

You thought you can catch the wind But deep down your soul is a grievous wond.

Now that the hunter is being hunted he needs the captives to rescue the captor.

Your Excellency everything we could give to save your political career, you have already taken it away from us.

Now to your tenth oh Rivers people and To Your Excellency, Save Yourself.

Former Ghanaian President John Mahama Leads WAEF Election Mediation Team To Nigeria

0

The West African Elders Forum (WAEF), made up of former leaders in the sub-region,  has concluded arrangements to deploy a Mediation team to Nigeria ahead of the 2023 general polls.

The team led by former Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama is billed to arrive in Abuja on February 22, 2023, and is expected to be on the ground for the February 25 Presidential and National Assembly elections as well as the March 11, 2023, state elections. Other members of the team include former Beninese President Boni Yayi, Fatoumata Tambajang, former Vice President of the Gambia, former Burkinabe prime minister and president of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS)  Kadre Ouedraogo and Dr. Erastus Mwencha, former Deputy Chair of the African Union (AU).

Speaking ahead of their arrival, Ann Iyonu, Executive director of Goodluck Jonathan Foundation and Coordinator of the WAEF Secretariat, said the focus and activities of the Forum, which is made up of former Presidents and Heads of Government in West Africa, is to interface with key stakeholders and provide the necessary support that would ensure peaceful elections.

She explained that the leaders would be working with key stakeholders in the elections as well as the observer missions, to ensure a crisis-free process before, during, and after the elections.

She said further: “Unlike other observation missions, the Forum has a special focus on election-related conflicts, and the Elders will be on the ground for a longer time, interacting with the candidates, political parties and members, the citizens, the election umpire, observers, and other key stakeholders; all the time looking out for crisis triggers, with the mind of nipping them in the bud by offering mediatory roles and giving relevant advice to ensure peaceful polling, based on their personal experiences as former leaders of the sub-region, while calling for individual accountability by those who by their actions or inactions undermine the democratic process and endanger lives.”

During the Gambian elections last December, WAEF carried out a similar engagement where they deployed a team led by former Nigerian President Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan. The presence of the WAEF team in The Gambia and their mediatory activities, especially after the elections, helped to resolve post-election tensions that threatened the integrity and outcome of the polling.

The WAEF team will be in Abuja next week to witness the second signing of the National Peace Accord by Presidential candidates and chairpersons of political parties, which is aimed not only at ensuring peaceful electioneering but also at committing the candidates to accept the outcome of the elections.

It would be recalled that ahead of the 2023 general elections, WAEF deployed a three-man delegation to Nigeria to undertake a pre-election mediation mission. The delegation made up of His Excellency Ernest Bai Koroma, former President of Sierra Leone; Her Excellency Fatoumata Tambajang, former Vice President of the Gambia, and Dr. Mohammed Ibn Chambers; former President of the ECOWAS Commission and former Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General and Head of the UNOWAS had strategic engagements with key stakeholders from 4th to 6th December 2022.

The West African Elders Forum, an initiative of the Foundation was established to serve as a home-grown and non-partisan platform of past heads of state and government in West Africa. As a platform, the Forum draws on the experience and standing of its members to provide advisory, mediation, and conflict resolution support services to the political leaders by bringing useful and non-partisan insights and skills for defusing tension and reconciling positions for the sake of the sustenance and advancement of democracy not only in West Africa but the entire continent. It also works on various democracy promotion, peace and security, and governance initiatives in the sub-region. Its overarching motivation is to work with other stakeholders to limit instability and violence and to advance the integrity of the democratic process.

One of the principal objectives of the Forum is to accompany West African countries in their various efforts at consolidating their democracies, through free, fair elections and peaceful transitions. In doing so, the Forum offers its good offices before, during, and after elections to ensure that any disputes that may arise do not degenerate into an open conflict and are resolved according to the demands of the rule of law.

The Forum has, since its inception, successfully played an active role in mediating peaceful elections in the Gambia and also intervened – with quiet diplomacy – in addressing nascent political challenges in a couple of countries by reaching out to and engaging with key political leaders at the highest level.

Attack On Buhari: Time For Mr President To Call El-Rufai To Order – CNPP

0
Chief Willy Ezugwu

Conference Of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) has called on Nigerians not to fall for what it described as the antics of the Governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as they are not fighting for the wellbeing of the people, insisting that the “opposing APC leaders are attacking President Muhammadu Buhari and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele because they are desperate to buy votes knowing that APC has failed.”

Calling on President Muhammadu Buhari to call Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State to order “for declaring Kaduna State a sovereign by ordering the residents to continue to recognise old N500 and N1,000  banknotes as legal tender contrary to presidential directives”.

They, therfore,:urged Nigerians in Kaduna and elsewhere to ignore Governor El-Rufai for their own good as only CBN can issue directives on legal tender in Nigeria on behalf of the President.

In a statement signed by its Secretary General, Chief Willy Ezugwu, the CNPP also reiterated its call on the CBN set up modalities for swapping old Naira notes for the Nigerian masses who may have been deceived by the APC Governors to keep their cash until the expiration of the naira swap deadline.

The CNPP noted that the presidential directive on temporary recirculation of old 200 naira notes as legal tender until April 10 was commendable in view of the obvious sabotage of the distribution of the redesigned naira notes by unpatriotic politicians conniving with commercial banks.

“Unpatriotic politicians who cannot win elections without vote buying are bent on stockpiling the new naira notes in their desperation to rig the 2023 general elections. This is the real reason for the cash crunch in Nigeria.

“For us, President Muhammadu Buhari would be declared a 2023 hero of democracy, and his administration’s many failures forgiven, if he sees through a free, fair, and credible 2023 general elections.

“We urge Nigerians not to allow themselves to be deceived by the APC Governors who never took the Federal Government to court over police brutality (which culminated in the #EndSARS protests).

“Nigerians have experienced uncountable lose of lives and property as a result of insecurity, the pains of the perennial fuel scarcity and many other failed policies of the APC-led federal government but the APC Governors never made a statement but they were quick to drag the federal government to the Supreme Court for implementing its own cashless policy because of obvious vote buying agenda of the party.

“The CNPP will continue to stand on the side of the masses on the naira redesign policy which is part of Nigeria’s cashless policy implementation because of the overall benefits of the policy in the long run. A stable economy and better life for the average Nigerian in the future is worth the sacrifices and the temporary pains.

“Contrary to El-Rufai’s allegations that a nationwide shortage of cash was created to incite the citizens to vote against APC candidates across the board, resulting in massive losses for the party in all the elections, the fact is that APC government scored zero over eight (0/8) in its eight years tenure and if Nigerians are voting against the party, it is not because of the impact of the cash crunch, but for continuously inflicting sufferings and pains on Nigerians since 2015.

“Governor El-Rufai was speaking from his own imagination when he alleged that the naira redesign policy was to ensure that the cash crunch is so serious, along with the contrived and enduring fuel shortage existing since September 2022, that the 2023 Elections do not hold at all, leading to an Interim National Government to be led by a retired Army General.

“The CNPP had on many occasions insisted that the lingering fuel scarcity was as a result of the corruption and incompetence of the management team of the NNPC. So, at what point did El-Rufai realised that the fuel scarcity is as a result of sabotage?

“After the glaring failure to perform in eight years, the APC Governors and their collaborators have been making allegations and insinuating that there was scheme for a military take-over.

“APC Governors must be told that the Nigerian military has subjected itself to civilian authorities in Nigeria’s democratic journey since 1999 and has continued to support internal security operations in the country and dragging the military into the desperation of some APC leaders was aimed at derailing President Muhammadu Buhari’s vow to leave a legacy of free, fair and credible elections this year. This is selfish and unpatriotic.

“The CNPP, therefore, urges Nigerians to ignore the conspiring APC Governors and support the Federal Government’s cashless policy and look forward to a better country after rejecting vote buyers and electing credible candidates in the February 25 presidential and national assembly elections as well as in the March 11 gubernatorial and state assembly polls”, the CNPP said.

Sit-at-home, An Assault On The Igbo, South East,  Says Uzodimma; Go Out To Vote Candidate Of Your Choice – Bishop Amatu

0
Bishop Amatu and Hope Uzodimma

Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State has said that  sit-at-home order is an assault on the Igbo and South East, and that the proponents do not mean well for the people.

He said those giving out such directives when the whole citizens of the country are going into a General Election to choose their leaders cannot be said to have any love for the Igbo people who they intend to disenfranchise.

The Governor spoke on Sunday, February 29, 2023, during a Thanksgiving Mass held at St. Michael’s Catholic Church Umueze 1 in the Okigwe Catholic Diocese, in honour of Chief Tony Chukwu.

Governor Uzodimma, therefore, enjoined the congregation in particular and Imo people in general, to come out en masse on Saturday, February 25, 2023 and March 11, 2023 and vote for the candidates of their choice as doing so will help add value to their lives.

He reiterated that as long as he remains the Governor of Imo State he will continue to do the right thing and promised not to disappoint the trust reposed on him by Imo people.

The Governor used the opportunity to accede to the request of the Church to help them in the building of Model Nursery and Primary School project by donating the sum of N20 million.

He said that insecurity and many other problems in the society are direct consequences of illetracy, saying that, “to minimize it Education needs to be encouraged.”

Earlier in His homily,  the Catholic Bishop of Diocese of Okigwe, His Grace Most Rev. Solomon Amatu had charged the congregation to love one another by following the footsteps of our Saviour Jesus  Christ.

The Bishop also vehemently condemned the sit- at- home order and enjoined the faithful and Imo people in general, to come out and vote for the candidate of their choice on the days of the election, saying that “it is your civic responsibility of electing the person that will bring change to the society.”

The Bishop urged the people to be peaceful.

In his brief remarks, the Parish Priest of St. Michaels Catholic Church Umueze 1, Rev. Fr. Charles Osunwa thanked Governor Uzodimma for making out time to worship with them despite his commitment and tight schedule.

He commended the Governor for the good work he is doing in Imo State, singling out the quality and massive road construction of the Governor and prayed God to bless him and see him through in his endeavours.

Those that attended the Mass were the Speaker Imo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emeka Nduka, the Chief Whip Federal House of Representatives,  Rt.Hon Nkeiruka Onyejiocha, Hon (Deacon) Chike Okafor, the Secretary to State Government, Chief Cosmas Iwu, the Chief of Staff, Barr. Nnamdi Anyaehie, members of the Imo State Expanded Executive Council.

Others include the Chairman Ben Uwajimogu College of Education Governing Council Ihitte Uboma, HRH Eze (Dr.) Oliver Ohanwe, the Vice Chancellor of Imo State University, Prof Chukwumeze, Rev. Fathers and Rev. Sisters from within and outside the Diocese, among others.

Nigeria Has Been Cursed With Bad Rulers

0
Peter Obi

By The Economist (Editorial)

Endorses Obi

A military regime gave way to democracy in 1999, but since then elections have offered voters an ugly selection of the ancient, the incompetent, and, most recently, a former military dictator. Parties have stoked ethnic divisions, intimidated their opponents, and bought votes. Many candidates—federal, state, and local—seek power to grab a share of the country’s oil wealth. Successive governments have been deeply corrupt. Turnout has steadily fallen.

But as Nigerians go to the polls on February 25th, Peter Obi, a third-party presidential candidate, offers a measure of hope.

Africa’s most populous country is in desperate need of it. The economy, the continent’s biggest, bursts with youthful potential—half the country is 18 years old or younger. A flourishing Nigeria would boost the whole of Africa. Instead, it is dragging it down. Nigerians are poorer now than they were in 2015, when the outgoing president, Muhammadu Buhari, took over. At least 60m (and rising) survive on less than the equivalent of $2.15 per day. Buhari’s protectionist policies have made things worse

In addition, the country is beset by violence. Boko Haram and its jihadist offshoots launched more attacks across the northeast last year than ever before. In the northwest criminal gangs’ murder and kidnap ordinary people, including schoolchildren. Farmers and herders feud over land. Fully 10,000 Nigerians were killed in conflict last year. And a botched banknote reform just before the election has sparked riots, as local banks have run out of cash. The country is catastrophically failing to achieve its potential

Turning that round starts with a clean ballot. Rigging elections outright is harder these days but the electoral body and police must clamp down more on intimidation and vote-buying. Beyond that, much will depend on who wins.

Bola Tinubu of the ruling All Progressives Congress is an old-school politician who, at 70 years old, is unlikely to shake things up. He shuns scrutiny. His manifesto veers from the fanciful (tackling jihadists by topping up the water in Lake Chad) to the incoherent (claiming to back both import substitution and the African Continental Free Trade Area). In the 1990s the American government froze some of his assets, accusing him of profiting from drug trafficking. He denies wrongdoing and reached a settlement with the American authorities.

Atiku Abubakar of the People’s Democratic Party, the main opposition, is no better. An ex-vice-president, he is making a sixth run at the presidency. He has grandiose ideas for industrialisation and 1m new police officers but no plan for how to pay for them. Olusegun Obasanjo, the president he served, accused him of embezzling $145m. In 2010 a report by the United States Senate alleged he was implicated in the transfer of $40m in “suspect funds” to America. He also denies wrongdoing.

Obi, a sprightly 61-year-old former state governor who is leading in the polls, offers an alternative. Most striking, he has urged people not to vote along ethnic or religious lines but to favour competence. Should they do so, it would mark a radical shift in Nigerian politics. He has also warned his supporters they should expect no money in return for their votes.

Obi talks of supporting business, freer trade, and getting a grip on Nigeria’s mounting debts. He diagnoses the country’s failings more precisely than his rivals, though he is not much better at explaining how he would fix them. His promises to scrap the staggeringly wasteful petrol subsidy and rationalise the central bank’s many exchange rates are echoed by his opponents.

Obi is not entirely a new broom. He was Abubakar’s vice-presidential running-mate in 2019 before switching parties. He has faced questions over undeclared offshore assets. (He says he earned the money in question before he took office as governor.) Even if he wins, his Labour Party is very unlikely to gain a majority in the national assembly, so governing will be hard.

But he is the only candidate to offer Nigerians much hope of change.

In a country that has been badly and repeatedly failed by its leaders, he is easily the best choice
